County replacing incinerated backhoe By ALEx HEEB Calhoun News-Herald The Calhoun County Highway Department will be receiving new equipment after an older backhoe caught on fire recently. According to Kyle Godar, county highway engineer, the backhoe was nearly destroyed. “The insurance company came and looked and they called it a total loss,” Godar told the Calhoun County Commissioners at their April 7 meeting. “They quoted a value of $27,000 with a $1,000 deductible, so we should get $26,000 from them. Right now we’re a backhoe short.”

Godar asked the council to approve the purchase of a used backhoe for $43,000, calling it the “best deal I could find.” “How quickly do you need the other backhoe?” Doug Wilschetz, commissioner chairman, asked, joking that he had no idea what a “reasonable cost for a backhoe is.” “Should we take time and shop longer, or are you in a pinch to get it?” he said. Godar replied that a new backhoe would probably cost between $60,000 and $80,000. “To find a backhoe that would cost $27,000, it would probably be a piece

of junk?” asked Gene Breden, commissioner. “Well, I wouldn’t necessarily say that,” Godar said, “but the backhoe that we had was a 1998, which was going on 20 years old.” The used unit, which is a 2007 model, was very well maintained, Godar said. “We went down and checked it out and it seemed like it was taken care of really well, and had been housed,” he said. “Appears to be in really good shape.” Some debate followed, as commissioners considered if there were opportunities to get discounted equipment from the state, but the purchase was

ultimately approved. “I think it’s a good deal,” Larry Weineke, commissioner, said. The county will at first lease the new equipment. “They will put it on rent for a month,” Godar said, “and the first month of it they’ll apply 100 percent of that rent towards the purchase, and then after that they will only apply 70 or 80 percent, so what I’m going to do is put it on rent so we have it for a month before we actually purchase it.” Wilschetz said the rental period would give the county time to “work the hell out of it and see if it’s really any good.”

Kidnapping ends with rescue of young mother By ALEx HEEB Calhoun News-Herald An alleged kidnapping in Jersey County last week sprawled across county lines, ending with a standoff in rural Calhoun County. Now the man police say is behind the standoff, Jonathan S. Trexler, has been charged with several felonies. The incident began the evening of Wednesday, April 6, after Tracie L. Trexler, 39, of Godfrey failed to pick up her children from school and was reported missing. The search came to include several agencies, including the Jersey County Sheriff’s Office, Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois State Police, Illinois Conservation Police and the FBI. In addition to the other agencies, Jerseyville City Police also arrived on scene with a K-9 unit. According to Calhoun County Sheriff Bill Heffington, one of his deputies, P. A. Parker, along with a conservation officer, discovered Jonathan Trexler holding Tracie Trexler hostage at a cabin near Hamburg. Officers quickly shut down Michael Hollow Road, which connects Michael to Hamburg, because Trexler was armed, Heffington said. The State Police SWAT team was called in to deal with the situation. Officers used Heffington’s squad car as a barrier to approach the cabin and begin negotiations. “Our biggest concern,” Heffington said, “was that he didn’t get away from the house and go to a neighbor’s house and then have another hostage situation. With the teamwork we had with the Illinois State Police and the Illinois SWAT Team, we pretty much secured the perimeter so that nobody could go anywhere.” One of those neighbors, Janice Vetter, found her hillside driveway quickly become a command

post for the incident as o ff i c e r s , who were unable to use their cell phones and had d i ff i c u l ty with JONATHAN  radios in TREXLER the rural Calhoun hills, borrowed a cordless phone to coordinate efforts. Vetter, who was babysitting at the time, added that she felt safe since there were many police between her and the standoff. “In the very beginning I was nervous, because in Calhoun it’s not every day that you have eight state police in your yard, but they told me I would be safe because I was surrounded by police.” Vetter added that she was more concerned for the safety of the officers, and once she found out what had happened, the safety of the hostage. As police negotiated with Jonathan Trexler on his front porch, Heffington said he was surprised to see Tracie Trexler make an escape attempt. “She escaped through the back through a screen, apparently when we were negotiating with him on the front porch… without him realizing it,” Heffington said. “Once that happened, I tell you what, that was a big relief, to see her to safety. Some of the agents took care of her and made sure she was safe, and the rest of us stayed there and tried to talk him into giving up.” Accord to Patrick McGuire, an investigator with the Illinois State Police, after several hours of negotiation, Trexler came out of the cabin and was arrested by K-9 and SWAT team members. McGuire said Tracie Trexler (See, KIdNAPPING, A2)

Agreement drafted to restart courthouse work By ALEx HEEB Calhoun News-Herald Plans are now drawn to begin work on Calhoun County’s new courthouse, according to Richard J. Ringhausen, state’s attorney for Calhoun. “They have a tentative draft agreement now that they are proposing,” Ringhausen told the Calhoun County Board at its April 7 meeting. “They said they still have a few more things to tweak in it before they send us the final version.” Doug Wilschetz, commissioner chairman, asked when construction might start. Ringhausen replied that he had no indica-

tion. Ringhausen, speaking after the meeting, added that once the bonding company had settled on the contractor, the agreement would be before the county board, which could either accept the contract or send it back for further modification. The new company will also be bonded, in the unlikely possibility that they are also unable to fullfill their contract. In a previous meeting, Ringhausen pointed out the bonding company was interested in starting work on the project as quickly as possible, since they are responsible for the difference in the amount the new building would have saved the county on utilities.

By ALEx HEEB Calhoun News-Herald The State of Illinois has appealed FEMA’s decision to deny the state’s application for disaster funding following last year’s December floods. The appeal was made after the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) worked with counties to determine that there were additional damages beyond those reported in the original appeal. FEMA visited the affected counties last week, sitting with county officials to determine which expenses where eligible for inclusion. A press release from the Governor’s office said the additional damages were $1.8 million, bringing total damages to $16.8 million. This still falls below the $18.1 million damage threshold that FEMA uses to determine whether or not a state will receive damages following a disaster. However, the state says, the $18.1 million figure is an internal guideline that FEMA is not bound to. “While the per capita threshold of $18.1 million is always talked about, they actually, in their rules, do have other considerations that they can look at when they are making the determination,” said Patti Thompson, spokesperson for IEMA. Thompson pointed out that Alexander County, which is the southernmost county in Illinois, took over $486 in per capita funding. “Calhoun County itself was over $100 per-capita,” she added. “These are just so many times above what would be considered to make a county eligible if there was a state disaster declaration, that we (See, flood, A2)

Outdoor Truths: Gary Miller

‘You can’t make a thoroughbred out of a mule’ Every now and then I try to get my wife into the hunting and fishing scene by sharing a little knowledge about various things. While some wives are as avid hunters as their husbands, mine prefers to let me do the killin’ and cleanin’ and she’ll do the cookin’. It seems, however, more and more of the hunting TV shows are leaning towards having hosts who are comprised of a husband-andwife team. And most of the time this team looks like they just came off the modeling runway before they suited up in their camo. It used to be that an outdoorsman or outdoorswoman had a history of this kind of activity. Many of the men were like Tom Miranda who grew up trapping before he became a famous hunting person-

ality. Today it seems that we have taken the perfect looking couple and turned them into hunters by giving them guns, trail cameras, and property that is running over with deer or turkey. The rugged climb to locate prey has been replaced by a ride in the electric buggy to the heated tree stand that has been placed there by a hired hand. There is no doubt the hunting business is replacing the hunt and that Hollywood has come to the hardwoods. Now back to my wife. We were riding on the four-wheeler the other day when I took the opportunity to impart knowledge. I pointed to the pile of cow dung that had been scratched up by a turkey. I simply said, “Look at that pile. A turkey has been there.” To which she replied, “Boy that

must be a big turkey!” Well, needless to say, she didn’t get the message I was trying to convey. I’m not sure what kind of message the hunting industry is trying to convey today either but I sure hope that it has something to do with the fact that everybody can hunt. Whether you are part of a hunting couple or whether you just prefer killin’ or grillin’; we’re glad to have you. And it also doesn’t matter what you look like. It sort of reminds me of some advice an old barber once shared with me. He said, “When it comes to haircuts, remember a couple of things…. The only difference between a good one and a bad one is two days. And you can’t make a thoroughbred out of a mule.” I’m not sure if he was making a

general statement or one that was just meant for me. I was afraid to ask, but I got the message. Now back to my wife….. again. Honey, you just stay at home and I’ll try to either shoot that turkey or put a saddle on him. But thanks for letting me go. n Gary Miller is an outdoorsman from Harrowgate, Tenn. He serves as a pro staff member for several huntingrelated companies and also speaks at game dinners and other hunting and fishing venues about faith and the outdoors. Jonathan Trexler was charged with aggravated kidnapping, home invasion and aggravated sexual assault in Jersey County, according to Assistant State’s Attorney Kevin Tellor. These crimes, he said, are felonies that carry from six to 30 years of prison time. Calhoun County also filed charges against Jonathan Trexler – aggravated battery, aggravated possession

of a controlled substance, and aggravated kidnapping – according to Calhoun’s State’s Attorney Richard J. Ringhausen. “We don’t want people to think that Calhoun is a refuge where criminals can hide,” Ringhausen said. Jonathan Trexler is being held in Jersey County Jail on $500,000 bond. Calhoun County has also set a bond amount at $500,000.

forward. Congressman Rodney Davis also issued a press release after the appeal was announced. “FEMA continues to have discretion under the law to give greater weight to other factors when determining the

need for federal assistance,” it read. Davis has recently been active in supporting a bill that would require FEMA to look more closely at severe localized impacts when making its decision. The language was inserted into a bill at Davis’ request.

There is a lot of misinformation out there about how your property is affected if you receive medical assistance from the State of Illinois. The State of Illinois has the legal right to recover assistance received through the Aid to the Aged, Blind or Disabled (AABD) program. Liens and claims are two legal actions used to collect the amount received by AABD clients. A lien can be filed on any “real property” you own. The amount of the lien/claim will be equal to

the amount of AABD assistance you received. A lien is filed on “real property”, which is land and anything erected on, growing on, or affixed to the land, such as buildings. Liens may be filed on both homestead and non-homestead properties. A lien will be filed against both homestead and non-homestead real property, regardless of its market value. Liens are not filed on mobile homes. If a lien is filed against your property, no action will be taken to sell your property. If and when the property is sold, the lien will be paid. Praise God!

T

here is something in us which wants and needs to praise God. There are times when our spirit just seems to overflow with joy and we simply can’t help praising God. There are many ways that this can be done, and a variety of words which can express God’s praise, but this seems to be a near universal sentiment. Most of the Psalms are hymns of praise, and throughout the Bible we are told repeatedly to praise God, even being told the seemingly paradoxical advice to praise and thank Him in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Psalm 150 exhorts everything which has breath to praise the Lord! And indeed, it sometimes seems that even the animals are praising the Lord. The animal kingdom seems to have something joyous imprinted in the very fiber of its being, for when we are moving and breathing and fulfilling our God-given functions there is something inherently joyful. So let all that you do be a praising of God, and remember that our primary purpose is to praise God. – Christopher Simon

“If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.” —1 Peter 4:11 NIV

WHAT'S GOING ON BETWEEN THE RIVERS ■ Point News

by Carol Sue Carnes ■ 618-883-2333

Congratulations to Trey Isaacson and Jena Kronable who were wed on Saturday in a 1:30 p.m. ceremony at St. Francis Church in Jerseyville. The reception and dance was held that evening at Pere Marquette State Park Lodge in Grafton. From 5 to 6 p.m. appetizers were served and at 6:30PM the buffet dinner with approximately 250 in attendance. Trey is the son of David and Donna Isaacson of Texas and Jena the daughter of Gary and Tammie Kronable of Grafton. Grandparents in attendance were John “Bill” and Anita Kamp of Batchtown and Alfred and Mildred Kronable of Meppen. Trevor and Cyndi Axford and Mackenzie of Chesterfield, Dennis and Shelly Scherer of O’Fallon, Mo. and John and Julie Carnes, Lydia and Caleb of Edwardsville were among those of my family in attendance. Dennis and Shelly stayed overnight at the Pere Marquette Lodge and Cyndi and Mackenzie were my overnight guests. On Sunday we all enjoyed the Spring Luncheon at St. Matthew Church in Brussels. The Calhoun Red Hatters group, of approximately 20 members, also enjoyed the luncheon at St. Matthews and afterwards attended the wonderful production of “The Addams Family” in Kampsville, presented by the Calhoun Entertainment Co. Congratulations to Joey Ohlendorf and Faith Maag. King and Queen of the Brussels Junior-Senior Prom. At 2 p.m. the group boarded a limo bus and traveled to Lewis & Clark Community College for photos, then on to the Brass Door in Carrollton for dinner, before returning to Brussels at 7 p.m. for the walk-in, coronation and dance. Joey is the son of John and Mary Ohlendorf of Brussels and Faith is the daughter of Scott and Paula Maag of Golden Eagle.

Congratulations to Kermit Bell of Batchtown who was honored on April 3 by the West Point Society of St. Louis, as the oldest West Point graduate in the area. A dinner in his honor was held at Kemoll’s Restaurant in St. Louis with Brigadier General Diane Holland, the first lady graduate to hold the position of Commandant of Cadets at West Point, as the speaker of the evening. Congratulations to my granddaughter, Madison Axford, daughter of Trevor and Cyndi Axford of Chesterfield. On Saturday afternoon she was inducted into the Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity at St. Louis University. Also congratulations to another granddaughter, Lydia Carnes, daughter of John and Julie Carnes of Edwardsville for another great weekend at the Purina Farms Event Center. She and her dog Bella and also Brio, owned by Kathy Hightshoe, won many ribbons by placing and qualifying in all five runs. A baby shower was held on Saturday afternoon for Traci (Sievers) Caselton of Golden Eagle. The event was held at the Brussels American Legion Hall with many family members and friends in attendance. Traci received many lovely and useful gifts for baby-to-be. Fire Chief Kent Schulze and Vice President Joey Kiel of the Point Fire Protection District attended the MABAS-IL, Division 67 meeting on Wednesday, April 6, at the Pittsfield Fire Department. Many interesting items and ideas were on the agenda that the guys brought back to share with the rest of the department. Many thanks to the Calhoun Entertainment Co., under the direction of Jerry Sievers on their 28 th production since beginning in 1989. To the many actors, chorus, art director and his department, set builders, stage hands, makeup, orchestra, etc.

The 2016 production of The Addams Family was truly great. I heard they had a packed house for all three productions. Many thanks to everyone that attended the Spring Luncheon on Sunday at St. Matthew Church Hall. All proceeds from the event are going towards the church’s cemetery fund. Members of the Brussels Woman’s Club, please be reminded that on Thursday, April 14, at 1 p.m. we will meet at St. Matthew Hall. Final plans for the upcoming Health Fair on April 21, 5 to 8 p.m. at St. Matthew Hall, co-hosted by the Batchtown Woman’s Club, will be made at this time. Please bring in your sold tickets and money to this meeting. Also remember this is Flower Exchange month. Hostesses are Judy Burch, Elaine Eberlin and Judy Klemme. Birthday greetings this week to my great grandson, Noah Keppler, also Miley Ewen, Judy Burch, Carol Pohlman, Jacqueline Haug, Dustin Martin, John Hartman, Jean Lesseg, Cheryl Klaas, Kelly Kuhn, Nicholas Kiel and all other celebrating their natal day at this time. Happy Anniversary to Rod and Lisa Engle, Tony and Kelly Schulte, Everett and Karen Friedel, Ed and Bernadine Hillen (57 yrs) and all other couples celebrating their wedding anniversary this week. I suppose you heard on the TV or radio that beginning Monday, April 11, the USPS has begun a forced price reduction of stamps, post cards, stamped envelopes, certified mail, etc. Letters now require 47-cents instead of 49-cents. This came about by the Postal Rate Commission back in January of 2014 granted an exigent surcharge on mail products and services. A complete listing of the new prices is available at www.usps.com Thought for the Day: The road to the Kingdom of God is not easy, but, the destination is paradise.

Dear reader, it has been quite some time since I have been with you. I assure you that we are fine and we still call Calhoun County home. Great things continue to happen at BCC. March has been such a busy time for me. Many of you have touched based with me to make sure everything is okay and then my family and I had not left. Since I last wrote to you, I have been in Indianapolis for school. The following week I was stricken with the flu causing me to miss a Sunday morning service due to sickness for the first time since the year we arrived. Then there was the busy preparation for our outdoor sight and sound Good Friday experience that showcased the scenes of the Last Supper, Pilate’s judgement, the crucifixion, and the resurrection. Despite the chilly temperatures, we were so grateful for the turnout on the two nights and look forward to doing it again next year. Our Easter attendance was phenomenal and over the past few weeks we have had several first time visitors who have visited with us at BCC. Life has truly been busy on Belleview Hollow Rd and abroad. March is also the

fourth anniversary of our family calling Calhoun County home. We truly loved being a part of this great community of people. This past Saturday I had the wonderful privilege of seeing the CEC production of “The Addams Family.” I want to thank Dalton Schumann for allowing me to come as his guest. It really was a very enjoyable experience. Rewarding as well as I watched both Dalton and Lindsey Watters, two people that I have been blessed to know through the community and our Vacation Bible School put on a spectacular show and demonstrate their talent for singing. It was also a pleasant surprise to watch Scotty Browning demonstrate a talent I did not know that he had. Let me tell you, seeing what the people of Calhoun County can do through Old Settler Days and CEC, just to name a few makes us proud of calling Calhoun home. We really do have a county that we can be proud of. We just need to focus on the possibilities that this county offers and can offer. We continue to be excited about several opportunities available to the community as a whole. We continue to

offer Celebrate Recovery for women on Mondays at 7 p.m. and for men on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. Beginning on Wednesday April 13, we will be having a community Bible study in the Village of Hamburg at 7 p.m. in the Village Hall. We certainly want to invite all of our friends to come join us as we meet every 2nd and 4th Wednesday night. Our family continues to do well. Our girls will soon finish Kindergarten and our son will finish Pre-K. In March April celebrated one year since completing radiation for breast cancer. Together, we also celebrated 9 year of marital bliss. She says marital “miss.” Jokingly of course! I think. Now that my first year of Master’s education is complete, I hope to connect with you more regularly of course. Thank you, reader for supporting and encouraging my family and I. We appreciate each one of you. If you see me out and about in the county, feel free to stop me and say hello! If I can serve you, contact us at 217-734-9012. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. (Phillipians 1:2)

Make weeknight meals healthy and simple Households in which both parents work and kids have school and extracurricular commitments can get a little hectic, particularly on weeknights. Parents who want to prepare nutritious dinners may feel it's impossible to do so without making elaborate, time-consuming recipes. But there are ways for busy, time-strapped parents to make sure weeknight dinners are both healthy and simple. n Stock a healthy pantry. When grocery shopping, purchase some healthy nonperishable foods that you can rely on in a pinch. Instead of stocking the freezer with unhealthy yet easily prepared frozen foods that are often loaded with saturated fat, stock your pantry with whole grain pastas. Whole grain pastas are lower in calories and higher in fiber and contain more nutrients than refined white pastas. And once water is boiled, whole grain pastas can be prepared in roughly 10 minutes. n Rely on a slow cooker. One of the simplest ways to prepare healthy meals that won't take much time to prepare each night is to use a slow cooker. Set dinner in the slow cooker in the morning before leaving for work, and by the time you arrive home each night you will have a fully prepared, healthy meal ready to be served. n Make meal prep a family affair. Families who share the responsibility of making dinner on weeknights may find it easier to prepare healthy meals. Younger children may not be able to join in the preparation of too many dishes, but middle school and high school students can help out by chopping vegetables while their parents work on other parts of the meal. Preparing meals can take

as much time, if not more, than cooking meals, so making meal prep a family affair can save a substantial amount of time. n Cook meals in advance. Families who are hesitant to use slow cookers may benefit by preparing healthy meals over the weekend and then refrigerating or freezing them so they can be cooked on weeknights. If you plan to freeze meals prepared in advance, remember to remove them from the freezer the night before and place them in

the refrigerator so they are thawed out when you arrive home from work to place them in the oven. n Choose simple recipes. Trying new recipes is one of the joys of cooking. But trying new recipes on weeknights can be time-consuming because cooks have yet to grow accustomed to each step in the recipe. When looking for new weeknight recipes, look for meals that can be prepared in five steps or less, leaving the more complicated recipes for weekend meals.

of the JCH Medical Group will speak on childhood obesity and the importance of good nutrition for a healthy life. Lori Luecking, Director of Brain Balance in Edwardsville will speak about the Center and the help it provides children with learning disabilities and behavioral issues. Mary Crawford, Coordinator of the Calhoun Senior Citizens Center will speak on current senior issues and services available through her agency. Throughout the event, attendance

prizes will be given away and light refreshments will be served. The finale of the Health Fair will be the Modern Woodmen $2,500 Matching Fund Raffle to benefit the Brussels Fitness Center and Batchtown community projects. Raffle tickets (58 prizes) are still available at various businesses or from members of the Brussels and Batchtown Woman’s Clubs. The event is open to everyone.

Four wins for Calhoun softball Brussels softball tops Pittsfield

The Calhoun softball team recovered from last week’s loss to Gillespie to win four games last week, and improve its season record at press time to 16-1. In games at Beardstown on Friday, the Warriors scored a 10-1 victory over Springfield and a 4-0 victory over Auburn. Macy Magherio started in the circle for Calhoun in the Springfield matchup, pitching five strikeouts in five innings. Grace Baalman led the Calhoun offense by driving in four runs. Emily Baalman, Madison Lehr, and Junie Zirkelbach also had RBIs for the Warriors in the victory.

Grace Baalman pitched throughout the entirety of the win over Auburn, striking out 15 batters in seven innings. Emma Baalman had two RBIs in the win, while Emily Baalman drove in an additional run. In a contest against Beardstown on Saturday, Calhoun won 18-0 with Grace Baalman on the mound striking out nine in three innings. Grace Baalman also drove in five runs off two home runs during the victory. Emily Baalman, Emma Baalman, and Kassidy Klocke also had homers against Beardstown, with Klocke driving in five runs off three hits. The Warriors wrapped up

their visit to Beardstown with a 4-0 win over Illini West, with Grace Baalman striking out 17 in seven scoreless innings. Emma Baalman drove in two runs in the victory, while Grace Baalman hit a RBI double. Currently, Grace Baalman sits atop St. Louis area rankings in home runs (6) and RBIs (29), as well as ERA (.30) and strikeouts (192). After a scheduled matchup against North Greene on Tuesday, Calhoun has a home rematch scheduled against the Spartans scheduled for Thursday afternoon and match-ups with Alton and Greenfield early next week.

Mixed results for Warriors baseball

It was a mixed week for the Calhoun baseball team, which has a 7-8 record at press time. Calhoun started the week last Friday with a 16-6 win over Wood River, with Chandler Sievers striking out five batters in six innings for the Warriors. Damian Pohlman led Calhoun’s offense by going two-forfour with four RBIs. Tyler Webster went two-for-four

in the game with three RBIs. Wes Klocke drove in two runs, while going three-forfour, and Mitch Bick went three-for-five and drove in two runs. Easton Clark also ended up with two RBIs in the victory. Next, the Warriors played a doubleheader against Southwestern last Saturday, and were swept by the Piasa Birds. Calhoun fell 7-2 in the first game, with start-

ing pitching duties handled by Webster, who struck out six batters in just under five innings on the mound. Clark went two-for-three from the plate in the loss, driving in one run. Calhoun fell 12-2 in the second game, as the Warriors were limited to just three hits. Pohlman was on the mound for four innings of the loss, striking out one batter.

Last Tuesday, the Brussels softball team handed a 12-4 defeat to Pittsfield, in a game where the Lady Raiders had 15 hits overall. Of those 15 hits, Baylee Kiel had three (Two singles and a double) with two RBIs, Emma Schleeper had three (two singles and a double) with two RBIs, Madison Willman had two (single and a double), and Allison Klaas had three (two singles and a double) with one RBI.

According to coach Keishia Hartle, the Lady Raiders had a few defensive plays go wrong in the beginning of the game, but their offense made up for it. “Once our bats came alive in the fourth inning, we never stopped hitting the ball,” Hartle said. “It was a nice conference win putting us 3-0 in the conference with only two more conference games to go.” Overall, Brussels is 10-3 at press time, but Hartle

said the Lady Raiders’ schedule only gets tougher as the season marches on. After match-ups with Alton and East Alton Wood River scheduled for early this week, Brussels will be taking on Calhoun and Greenfield and will be participating in the Jerseyville Cluster this weekend. “We will definitely need to buckle down and play errorless defense in the games to come,” Hartle said.

Win and a loss for Brussels baseball Pitchers for the Brussels baseball team only allowed six hits in the Raiders’ game last Tuesday against Pittsfield. Errors and walks proved costly to Brussels in the 11-0 loss, as the Saukees scored seven runs in an inning to win the contest. Andrew Hoemmen started the game on the mound, and helped Brussels limit hits in the game. Cody LaMarsh pitched a couple of innings in relief in the contest. Most of the scoring by

the Saukees was done in the seven-run third inning, benefitting from walks and errors. Coach Steve Droege observed that Raiders players hit the ball well, but it always went right at fielders. “We had runners on base every inning,” Droege said, “but we just couldn’t get anything going.” Brussels took on the new baseball program from McGivney on Friday, and came out on top of the game

13-1. Junior Brady Ellis put together what Droege called the “best-pitched game that Brussels has played so far,” pitching four innings and only allowed one run. The Raiders only made one error in the victory. An additional game was scheduled against Calhoun this week, but was rained out. It has been rescheduled for May 7. Brussels is next scheduled to take on Southwestern Thursday afternoon.

Point Fire Protection District receives donations

Chief Tim Bunt of Olin Brass and Rosewood Heights fire departments, and Captain Joel Goom of Olin Brass Fire Department, ventured to Brussels Friday, April 8 to present Chief Kent Schulze of the Point Fire Protection District with turnout gear from their Olin Department. This fire protective clothing is one of the most important tools that firefighters have to protect themselves. Last month, a back-up generator for the firehouse was donated to the Point District from the Rosewood Heights Fire Protection District. “On behalf of myself and the Point Fire Protection District, I would like to thank both of these departments for their generous and most useful donations, “ said Chief Schulze.

They are known as one of the most influential rock and roll bands of all time, and this summer you can see them perform live at the Illinois State Fair. State Fair Manager Kevin Gordon is pleased to announce KISS is bringing its fire breathing, pyrotechnic show to the Illinois State Fair Grandstand stage on Wednesday, Aug. 17. The band has sold more than 40 million albums in the United States and has exceeded $100 million in record sales to become one of the world’s bestselling bands of all-time. KISS has performed in the smallest venues, like state fairs, to the world’s largest stages, including the Super Bowl and the Olympics. KISS is a rock and roll group that appeals to multiple generations regardless of age or race. The group’s

fans, the KISS Army, travel across the nation and around the world to see the band perform. Expect to see the KISS Army in full face paint and big hair, walking the streets of the fairgrounds the night this Hall of Fame act takes the stage. The band, which is currently comprised of Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Tommy Thayer, and Eric Singer, has been performing before sold-out crowds since in 1973. KISS has countless hit songs, including: “Rock and Roll All Nite,” “Strutter,” “Lick It Up,” “I was Made For Lovin’ You,” and “Beth.” More details regarding ticket sales, special events, and additional grandstand acts will be released in the coming weeks and months. Dates for the 2016 Illinois State Fair are Aug. 12-21.
