Calhoun school board ponders sales tax By BOB CROSSEN Calhoun News-Herald Stymied by financial struggles, the Calhoun Community Unit School District 40 Board discussed the possibility of a sales tax referendum to generate revenue during Monday night’s meeting. The school facility occupation tax is allowable by law so long as voters approve its establishment similarly to the public safety tax passed in November 2012. The money generated through the sales tax could only be used for expenses dealing with school facilities. Based on preliminary numbers, the one-cent tax could raise approximately $170,000 throughout the county in a year. Sievers said Unit 40 would split the income with Brussels Community Unit School District 42 if it were to pass, noting she’s been in contact with Superintendent Mark Martin concerning the issue. The tax money could not be used for teacher salaries, but rather would pay for
repairs to buildings such as window or door updates. The money could also be used to pay back debt on existing buildings, which Superintendent Kate Sievers said could potentially lower the tax rate for the district over time. “If we use this to pay down that debt service that we have now, it could essentially decrease their property taxes through that and spread that sales tax amongst more people,” Sievers said. Tom Crabtree, representative of Stiefel Nicholas, said the tax would apply to retail sales that are not wholesale. Exemptions for the tax are motor vehicles, farm equipment, medicine and unprepared food, so the tax would not increase the cost of residents’ groceries, nor would medication see an additional tax with its passage. The tax would be placed on gas sold in the county, however, and Sievers said the tax would be shared by everyone purchasing something in Calhoun. Visitors to the county would pay for the tax that would benefit the school district’s facili-
ties. Jersey Community Unit School District 100 proposed the referendum during an election in the spring of 2013, but voters shot it down worrying the price increases would drive tourists out of the county.

By BOB CROSSEN Calhoun News-Herald The Calhoun County Commissioners toured the old grade school in Hardin Monday to discuss the work necessary to get it fixed for nine county employees to move into the building. The building was gutted years ago when the county had initially looked into sprucing up the space for county offices. Paint has cracked off the walls in some areas, boards on the walls near the floor have been ripped from their support beams and dust tumbled through the sunbeams streaking through broken and boarded up windows during Monday’s tour. Boards of the floor in the potential treasurer’s office have buckled from water damage, raising around three inches off the ground in one space, and the basement is filled with odds and ends that have yet to be disposed. Owner’s Representative Bernie Loft said the architect’s largest concerns with the building are unforeseen structural issues. Loft said the worries about those issues could raise the contingency of the project by a considerable amount, noting the architect believes bids must come in at approximately $800,000 for the first floor renovation if the county hopes to remain in the $1 million Bob Crossen/Calhoun News-Herald budget. Local chidren play basketball on the pad outside the old grade school building in Hardin Monday afterBefore anybody moves into the building, noon while the Calhoun County Commissioners toured the building. The commissioners approved he said an inspection of the basement would a $1 million donation last summer to renovate the building into a courthouse for all county offices. be necessary as black mold has infested
some of the walls. Loft said the building has potential to be a great courthouse for the county, but requires the funding to achieve that outcome. The project was amended earlier this year to prioritize renovation of the first floor which would bring the county clerk, county treasurer and supervisor of assessments offices into the building along with a board room for the commissioners. Initial estimates indicated the first floor of the building could be completed with a $1 million budget. The board is also looking for savings by sourcing the county highway department to demolish parts of the building and clean other parts out. A restroom addition on the east side of the building would be demolished as part of the project to make way for an elevator addition to ferry building guests between floors of the potential courthouse. After touring the building, the commissioners agreed to table a decision to move forward with demolitions by the county highway department to receive a report from the architect of the project. Last year, the commissioners approved a $1 million donation from Delford Richter to renovate the old school building into a courthouse under the stipulation that it be recognized with his father’s name, Marvin Richter. Marvin Richter was an influential figure in the agriculture community. The next regular meeting of the commissioners is June 5 at 5 p.m.
Trash cash sparks community services By BOB CROSSEN Calhoun News-Herald Approximately two tons of trash was collected during Calhoun Community Foundation’s Cash for Roadside Trash event last month, and the winners are putting the cash toward community betterment. Judy Burch, CCF treasurer and organizer of the event, said she was overwhelmed by this year’s response to the program. Members of CCF donated additional money for those who brought in the most bags to each drop site, she added. “It was a wonderful, wonderful response. We were very, very happy at the Hardin redeem site and at Brussels,” Burch said. “So we decided that we would donate $100 to the top ones.” There was a drop site for the trash in
both Hardin and Brussels and the teams that gathered the greatest number of full garbage bags received an additional $100. The foundation awarded teams $2 for each full bag. Gathering the most bags at the Hardin site was the McCully Heritage Project, which had positioned itself on a three-mile stretch of the Illinois River Road south of Kampsville. Michelle Berg-Vogel, McCully Heritage Project director, said the heritage project has participated each year in cleaning up the roadside leading up to the 960-acre plot. And with the money raised this year, she said the Project can fund its battery recycling program. “This was in the last few months. Just this year we started doing it,” Berg-Vogel said. “All the money from our trash for cash goes directly to paying for the battery recycling.”
Batteries contribute greatly to the amount of heavy metals and toxic chemicals at solid waste dumps. Some studies have also linked batteries in landfills to soil and water pollution. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency website, 96 percent of all lead-acid batteries – those that power cars, phone lines in electric outages and other large machinery – are recycled, while everyday alkaline batteries are processed much less. Berg-Vogel said a big reason alkaline batteries are not recycled as much has to do with financial sustainability of breaking down the small power cells to be used for other purposes. Berg-Vogel said batteries cost between $0.50 and $1.50 per pound to recycle, depending on the recycling facility’s location. Rechargeable batteries cannot be (See, trash A2)

board granted Smith a time extension for the pre-hearing suspension. A court order filed May 9 by U.S. Magistrate Judge Donald Wilkerson indicated Smith is not likely to flee nor is she a danger to any person or the community. The motion for her detention was denied and Smith was ordered on house arrest with GPS monitoring and daily reporting. Smith is still held in the Jersey County Jail pending charges brought against her in Calhoun County.

Shad Burris, left, presents a cash prize for last year's inaugural KC Hall BBQ Cook Off in Hardin to Richard and John Gillespie of Bald Brothers Barbecue. A cook off will be held again this year May 25 from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the KC Hall in Hardin.
By BOB CROSSEN Calhoun News-Herald The Knights of Columbus Hall in Hardin will host its second annual barbecue cook off Sunday. Andy Brannan, organizer of the event, said he got the idea to host the barbecue cook off when the KC Hall was looking to find ways to raise money for its operations. He said he knew of similar events in Jacksonville and felt it would be a good fit in Calhoun. “It actually came from up in Jacksonville, Ill., where they have a big cook off. I work with a few guys from up there and they compete in it,” Brannan said. “They gave me some ideas about it and how to get started.” Twelve teams competed in the event last year, and this year the field has grown
to include an additional six teams. Teams may consist of up to five people, and will compete in five categories: pork shoulders, ribs, chicken, open class and side dish. He said in other barbecue cook offs, the competitors have to adhere to certain standards – using only a certain type of fuel for the grill for instance – but the KC Hall cook-off is more relaxed. “It’s kind of a bragging rights thing more than anything else,” Brannan said, noting the participants get into the competitive atmosphere of the event. Brannan said Richard and John Gillespie won both the ribs and the open class awards last year, taking home a cash prize for their efforts. And a cash prize will (See, cook off A2) C

A2 Letter to the editor
Lend your voices to budget battle TO THE EDITOR: It’s budget time in Springfield. The decisions legislators will make in the next weeks will have a direct and profound impact on the lives of hundreds of thousands of everyday Illinoisans. More than most, we will see the impact, whether it be positive or negative, first hand. We work for WellSpring Resources. We serve more than 6,000 children, adults and families each year in Madison, Jersey, Calhoun and Greene counties through services for mental health and substance abuse conditions. Our work is a fiscally-sound investment. Many of the systems that will be affected by these cuts provide vital community-based services to vulnerable people of all ages. These services are far less expensive than alternatives such as jail, prison, hospitalization, nursing homes, or involvement with the justice system. State revenues cannot be cut this deeply without very real consequences. 140,000 people with mental illness would be denied medication and/or therapy. 11,000 victims of domestic abuse would not receive proper shelter and assistance. 13,000 teachers would be laid off. 21,000 seniors would not receive the help they need from in-home caretakers. 41,000 fewer children would receive child care, preventing their parents from working. Every one of us has the power to influence the elected leaders that represent us. It is my sincere hope that all of us educate ourselves on the budget battle in Springfield and lend our voices to the discussion. JANETTE HEATH, MA, NCC, LCPC Chief Clinical Officer Carrollton, Ill. He said voters are more likely to visit the polls in favor of the measure if the district can provide an idea for how it would spend the money. Creating public trust is important to the sales tax passage, he said, noting a list of projects is a powerful step in forming that trust. More information about the sales tax can be found on the Illinois Department of Revenue website, and informational packets are also available at the unit office. Battery recycling is only one of the programs to be funded by the cash for roadside trash, as the Girl Scouts managed to collect the most bags of trash for the Brussels dropoff location. Debbie Kamp, Girl Scouts leader, said the Girl Scouts – seven levels of the group took part in the event – have not made final plans with how they intend to use the money. Burch look into the contract and how the district could get out of the agreement. A termination clause requires payment of approximately $26,000, she said, noting she is researching other options for the board’s consideration. In other business, the board: n Approved to hire Alicia Churchman as district treasurer, Heather Reed as a high school biology teacher and Cheri Burris as high school principal starting July 1. n Accepted the resignation of Laura Bailey as head cook. She will retain her other positions. n Authorized Sievers to continue the process of working cash bond issuance not to exceed $715,000. n Approved a $60,000 intrafund loan transfer from the transportation fund to education fund. n Approved final school calendar. n Approved student attendance at the state FFA convention June 10 through June 12 in Springfield. n Approved the risk management plan, prevailing wage resolution and IESA membership renewal. n Approved to move the June 16 board meeting date to June 25.
munity service projects such as its veteran’s dinner in the fall and the Christmas fruit baskets. “Girl Scouts are supposed to use resources wisely and make the world a better place. That was kind of the whole thing behind doing it, and then the money was just extra,” Kamp said. She said volunteering their time to clean up their county is an important part of building the young girls’ character. She said the girls found tires and other large items along the roadside that opened their eyes to how littering impacts the environment. One of the younger members, she said, told her she didn’t like picking up the garbage, and used her feel-
ings as a way to start a discussion about the importance of volunteering and improving the community. “It was a huge lesson for them to learn. They were just flabbergasted, too, by all the stuff that we found,” Kamp said. “We found an old rug, old rags. It was just an abundance of things.” As they learned about how the items made their way to the roadside, Kamp said she hopes they can spread their influence to ensure there is less trash deposited in the environment throughout the county. But until then, the CCF will continue its Cash for Roadside Trash program to keep the roadways throughout the county clear and appealing to visitors and residents.

Brannan said awards will be issued at 7 p.m., including a people’s choice award. But the food is only part of the event’s entertainment as there will also be a DJ playing music, as well a bags and washers tournaments. Brannan said teams may buy into
the games for $20 per team while enjoying their barbecue. “The biggest way to get involved is just to come down and enjoy the day. Come down and eat some food,” Brannan said. Doors to the event open at 12 p.m. and judges will begin making their rounds at 2 p.m. Each category will have a judging period of 45 minutes, Brannan said. Attendees can try the food after the judges.

I have sometimes lamented that the problem with life is not that we are not loved, but that we are not loved sufficiently. We all desire to be loved just a bit more than we currently are and perhaps appreciated a bit more for just how wonderful we think we are. But, in reality, we are loved perfectly by God. We shouldn't expect so much from our fellow man; family and friends do their best to love and be loved in return, but we are not the best lovers. The prize for best lover clearly goes to God, who made each of us perfect in our own way, and who loves us despite our failings. And what is more, he made the ultimate sacrifice, humbling Himself to appear in human form, being born in the humblest of circumstances, and subsequently suffering an ignominious death usually reserved for the worst of criminals, and doing all of this to give us a good example and to atone for our sins. So rejoice in this best of news: you are infinitely loved! - Christopher Simon

Congratulations to Dre and Sami (Halsey) Angelo. At 2:02 a.m. Sat., Carson Michael Angelo made his appearance weighing in at seven pounds eight ounces and twenty inches long. He, also, was born on Grandma Diane’s birthday. Congratulations, Diane having a grandchild on your birthday is awesome. Went to Dr. Tan Tues., and got great news. All of my blood work was great and my cancer has shrunk a teeny tiny bit, but I’ll settle for that. It doesn’t have to shrink at all, as long as it doesn’t grow. The Legion’s bar is now open,
and I believe they have some sort of food. It is really nice, and so clean looking. You don’t have to drink the hard stuff; you can drop by for a soda, and conversation. Mon., May 26, Kampsville Legion Post 1083 will have their annual Memorial Day service. There will be a short service at Summit Grove Cemetery, and then service at Kampsville immediately following. In case of rain it will be held in the gym. Redeye has his metal tree up in the yard again. It is really beautiful at night with gold, red and blue
lights. I am trying, again, to have flowers in the yard, but don’t seem to have much luck. I have been giving them plant food, and Sun. I put dirt and plant food in the pots. Wasn’t out and about last week, so not much news. Anytime anyone has news they would like to put in my column, please feel free to call me. I don’t get around like I used to and don’t always have anything to write. I know people are getting tired of just putting my family and me in the items. And how was your week??? See you next week.
■ Blessings from Belleview by Chris Thomas ■ 217-734-9012
Our family of five has returned after a week in Minneapolis. We enjoyed the indoor swimming pool and hot tub and our first visit to Mall of America. This past Sun. we had a great service at Belleview Community Church and were blessed to have a visitor with us. We would like to send a birthday shout out to Breann Ruble who celebrates her birthday on May 25. You are invited to join us for a special Memorial Day service to watch the video “In My Seat”, a testimony of Steve and Megan Scheibner. Steve was actually scheduled to fly the first plane that hit the WTC on 9-11. Join us for this profound testimony. Also, we are looking forward to our next Community Worship Service in Hamburg at the Village Park. We are praying and hoping for beautiful weather. Following the service, we will have hot dogs, chips, and drinks available for all who attend. The event starts at 10:30 a.m. on June 1. Bring your lawn chairs; we will have chairs available for those who do are not able to bring one. The Greene’s, one of America’s premier southern Gospel
group will be with us on Saturday night June 14 at 7 p.m. Come join us for an evening of great Gospel music. A love offering will be taken to help pay for their expenses to come here from North Carolina. We have been working tirelessly in potty training our son. It seems to be a much more difficult time with him than it was with our twins. There seems to have been bright spots when he would grab our hands and pull us into the bathroom, drop his britches and sit on the toilet only to twiddle his thumb and smile sheepishly at us. Moments come when he would take full advantage of the pullups and see how much they can hold, only to leave us wincing from the pungent smell. Then there are moments like these. One day while watching a game on one of my beloved sports channel, I felt a cold hand touch my arm. I looked into the innocent blue eyes of my son and realized he stood before me in his birthday suit. My wife stood in the background clapping joyfully. “Tell daddy what you did Mitchell, tell him” she said excitedly.
With a smile that stretched from ear to ear, he pointed to his nether regions. “I potty daddy”, he said laughing. I hugged him and excitedly exclaimed how proud of him I was. Excitement turned to horror when I felt a warm stream of liquid on my legs. Oftentimes, we get ahead of ourselves. It is the age old adage, “Do not count your chickens before they hatch” that comes into play. One thing my son is teaching me is patience. It is one of the hardest lessons that I continue to learn. I admit I am a results oriented person and I want results now. I want the home cooked meal done in a microwave time. Quality taste in microwaved meals is seriously compromised compared to a home cooked meal. What have we compromised for the sake of gain and results? If we are honest with ourselves, we may soon discover that we lost more than we gained. We urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone. – I Thessalonians 5:13

Two Rivers Family Fishing Fair back in Grafton for 2014 By ROBERT LYONS Calhoun News-Herald
The 24th annual Two Rivers Family Fishing Fair is just around the corner. This year’s fair will be held Saturday, June 7 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Pere Marquette State Park. As always, it is an entirely free event. Fishing poles, bait and supplies are all provided. “My hopes with the Fishing Fair is to get the kids hooked on fishing, instead of some of the lesser desirable things that are out there,” Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ Urban Fishing Coordinator Scott Isringhausen said. The Fishing Fair will be back in Grafton for 2014 and will feature a few new activities, according to Isringhausen. “Last year we had to move it to Jerseyville because of the flood,” Isringhausen said. “There were actually a couple activities that would have been first-time activities that were not there last year.” He said one of the new exhibitors is the Audubon Center from West Alton, Mo., which will have a station to teach visitors about natural habitats. Illinois American Water will also have an exhibit at the Fishing Fair, which Isringhausen said should be a fun addition. “It’ pretty neat,” he said. “Kids can learn about how to conserve water in an interactive trailer.” Grafton’s Raging Rivers plans to have a booth at the fair, but Isringhausen said he’s not sure what it will entail at this point. Kampsville’s Center for American Archaeology made its debut last year, and plans to be back again this year. Bow fishing, the bluegill pond, a 4,000-gallon aquarium, trout pond, baiting stations, knot tying, a reality fishing machine, fish identification, casting instructions, first fish photos, Camo the Clown and an appearance from St. Louis Cardinals mascot Fredbird are among the mainstays families can look forward to. Many of the
activities include chances to win prizes. “Something else that we haven’t had for a few years that we’re going to bring back is Radio Disney,” Isringhausen said. “They do a lot of games with the kids.” Over the years, the event has grown and now not only attracts visitors from around Metro East St. Louis, but from other states, as well, according to Isringhausen.
The Fishing Fair is held during National Boating and Fishing Week, as well as Illinois’ Free Fishing Days. During Free Fishing Days, residents are permitted to fish in Illinois without a fishing license. “If they bring the kids to the fishing fair and like to fish, Mom and Dad can then fish Saturday and Sunday as a family activity,” Isringhausen said.

The event is a collaborative effort between Illinois Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Fish and Wildlife represented by Pere Marquette State Park and Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge, respectively. ConocoPhillips and Cabela’s of Hazelwood, Mo., are the primary sponsors for the fair. For more information on the Two Rivers Family Fishing Fair, call 618-786-3323, ext. 1.

Sarah Ansell has returned to Grafton, to reopen The White Pelican at 127 E Main Street. Previously, Ansell operated The White Pelican from 2003-2008 selling art by local artists. The White Pelican reopened late January 2014. Currently the gallery showcases and sells handmade and fine art in a variety of mediums: painting, fiber/textiles, block prints, photography, glass, jewelry, ceramics, upcycled art, and more from 23 of the region’s talented artists. One artist, Chris Anders, of Springfield, overlaps from the original gallery. Ansell is excited to return to Grafton as a business owner and art supporter “Grafton is a great place to sell art, thanks to the supportive community, tourism attractions, and natural beauty,” Ansell said. During April, Art Workshops for Kids began for ages 4-9 with adult supervision or 10 and up. The classes are taught by Illinois state licensed art teacher and gallery artist, Heidi Hulliung. During the workshops, kids have the opportunity to choose a medium to create a drawing, painting, or others from still life stations while learning techniques and fundamentals of art. More art workshops for adults and kids are coming soon. In addition to the gallery and art workshops, The White Pelican

Lecture on Rocky Fork community May 22 Local educator and historian Jim Price will speak on “The Rocky Fork AME Church, the River as Road to Freedom” at Farley’s Music Hall, Elsah, on May 22 at 7:30 p.m. The lecture is the second in the HosmerWilliams Lecture Series for 2014, sponsored by Historic Elsah Foundation and underwritten in part by Liberty Bank, Godfrey. Refreshments will be served following the lecture. The Rocky Fork community was established in the 1830s and offered safe haven to freedom seekers, blacks fleeing the American south and free blacks looking for a community where they could support one another. This is the story of the Underground Railroad and the Mississippi River as the road to freedom and the founding of the New Bethel AME (Rocky Fork) Church. The current Rocky Fork area is a National Underground Network to Freedom site. Lewis and Clark professor Jim Price was responsible for bringing together historians, local artists, and other scholars to explore the genealogy and heritage of the descendants of the Rocky Fork area in a comprehensive exhibit
that closed recently at Lewis and Clark Community College. Price will tell the story of one of the region’s best kept “secrets” in words and pictures. The lecture is free and open to the public. Reservations are not required. Parking is available.

The beauty of a garden By CaRmen enSingeR Calhoun News-Herald Ask Tammy Winters of White Hall what her favorite pastime is and she will no doubt say it is gardening and her back yard is stunning proof of this. Winters, a former North Greene teacher, said she has always loved flowers and her love of growing things comes naturally. “When I was little, my dad always had a big garden every year,” Winters said. “I would go out and pick the green beans and tomatoes and go out and sell them to make money to go to band camp.” Now, she leaves the growing of vegetables to her husband, Harold, while she concentrates on a multitude of flowers beds, which not only take up most of her own back yard, but that of the neighbors next door, also. “It started with just one bed in the middle of the yard and then I started putting something in on the side, and then the other side and it just kept growing,” Winters said. “One time one of my little neighbor kids said ‘Can we go play in your maze.” And it literally is a maze with zigzagging beds with just about many plant varieties. “I try to have something blooming all the time,” Winters said. “The spring stuff like the tulips and daffodils are done now and the peonies, columbine and irises are blooming now. After that we will have the day lilies and daisies.” Winters said one important aspect in keeping a nice garden is the quality of the mulch. “I haven’t been able to get really good mulch for the last several years but this year I found some I really like,” she said. “Some of the mulch will be too big and branchy and then

Well, maybe not as breathtaking, but darn near it. The backyard and next door lot of Tammy Winters who lives on Ross Street in White Hall as spring flowers give way to summer blooms. Winters spends a great deal of time tending her garden which features a maze of different flower beds arranged so something will be in bloom year round to add a splash of color.
some of it is too fine. I found this at Lacross Lumber in Carrollton and it is just perfect.” Winters said it is going to take around 80 huge bags of mulch to go around all her many flower beds. “I used to buy it by the truckload but I found it is much easier to handle in the bags,” she said. “I just throw a bag in my wheelbarrow and take it to where I need it. So far I’ve used around 60 large bags and I would say I will probably have to have another 20 before it’s all done.” There is also quite a bit of work involved in maintaining such a huge garden. “Once I get it mulched and the
weeds pulled then it’s not so much work but right now there is a lot of work going on in a person’s yard,” Winters said. “The rain has really put me behind this year. Mulching really makes gardening a lot easier plus you can get the stuff like Preen that you put down which also helps to keep the weeds down.” Then, of course there is the watering which must be done all summer long. “Gardening is a lot of work but it is pleasurable work,” Winters said. “There is just something about digging in the dirt which relieves stress. It’s also good exercise because you are always bending down and digging so it keeps you active.”
Winters is a member of several garden clubs including the North Greene Garden Club which she started several years ago. She, along with other garden club members maintain the community garden on Main Street and also maintain all of the flowers in the barrels down Main Street and host the Farmer’s Market every Saturday morning in Whiteside Park. “It’s just fun to be around other people who have the same interest as you,” Winters said. “I’m checking into joining the garden club in Jacksonville. Our garden club has a lot of activities and you are always learning something new.”

SAM ELLioTT Calhoun News-Herald The Brussels High School softball team set up an all-Calhoun County regional semifinal by beating Greenfield-Northwestern 9-1 in the teams' postseason opener Monday in Brussels. The victory earned the No. 4 seeded Lady Raiders a Hardin Class 1A Regional semifinal matchup with No. 1 Calhoun set for Tuesday at Calhoun High School, but results were not available at press time. Brussels freshman ace Baylee Kiel earned her 10th win of the season while limiting Greenfield-NW to just one run Monday. "She’s pretty confident and
we have her back and she has ours," Lady Raiders head coach Jay Butler said. "It’s a team effort and she goes out there and battles. Baylee had a nice outing and we had good defense [Monday], too. It was an all-around good game. We came out and played hard. That’s what we’ve got to do again [Tuesday]. Brussels improved its record this season to 16-13 with Monday's victory. The Calhoun Lady Warriors took a 29-6 record into Tuesday's regional semifinal — one win shy of a school-record 30. Calhoun entered the postseason coming off its lone set of backto-back losses this season, but the Lady Warriors are hopeful the late-season, large-school tests will pay dividends as Calhoun returns
to facing Class 1A competition in the playoffs. The Lady Warriors were kept scoreless for just the third time this season as Glenwood won a 12-0 decision Friday in Chatham and a late comeback came up just short as Edwardsville edged Calhoun 3-2 Saturday in Edwardsville. Elani Godar drove home Emma Baalman and Samantha Gerson in the top of the seventh inning to shrink Calhoun's deficit, but the Lady Warriors' comeback ended one run shy of forcing extra innings. The Brussels Raiders forced their regional quarterfinal matchup with Greenfield-NW past seven innings, but the Tigers claimed a 4-1 decision in the eighth Monday at Brussels High School. One out away from elimination in the seventh, Brussels drew even with a run scored by Riley Caselton on a Greenfield-NW wild pitch. Brussels, the No. 4 seed in the White Hall Class 1A Regional field, bows out with a 9-19 record this season. Top-seeded Calhoun will meet No. 5 Greenfield-NW in a regional semifinal matchup at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in White Hall. The Warriors ended their regular season with a 22-13 record after Carlinville won a 10-5 decision Monday in Carlinville.

IVEDC awards grant scholarships Frank, J. Schwab, Director of the Illinois Valley Economic Development Corporation, is pleased to announce that the agency has awarded six $1,000 Community Service Block Grant (CSBG) Scholarships to area students. The recipients were Lisa DeVries, Jennifer Rekart, Holly Petrie, and Tana McNaughton, all from Staunton, Heather Matthews and Sarah Zipprich, both from Jerseyville. The scholarships were awarded with funding provided through the 2013 Community Services Block Grant, with Frank Schwab, Executive Director, and Joe Broers, Community Services Block Grant Coordinator, presenting the scholarships. CSBG scholarships are awarded to low-income residents who desire to further their educations as full-time students at an Illinois accredited two-year community college, or four-year college or
university. An important feature of the CSBG Scholarship program is that it is not limited to recent high school graduates but is extended to individuals who may be returning to complete their education as adults. For the past five years a large percentage of scholarships have been awarded to individuals whose circumstances had never before afforded them the opportunity or time to consider further education. Many of those individuals and their households had participated in other corollary services offered by the agency and whose educational interests were fostered by this relationship. Director Schwab stated that the CSBG Scholarship Program will have funds available to award scholarships again this year to interested individuals residing in Calhoun, Greene, Jersey, and Macoupin. For more information contact the agency administrative office at 217-839-4431.

TRI-COUNTY REAL ESTATE TOUR Shortcuts to a lush lawn KINGDOM REAL ESTATE, INC.
Hardin
Jean Hagen, Managing Broker - 232-1110 Jeff Oldham, Ph.D, Broker - 576-2531
3 bdrm 1 bath home on 1.5 rural acres. West of Hardin. Great views.
There are one million acres of lawn across the country. Many homeowners aspire to having a lush, green lawn as the showcase of their properties. The front lawn can make a statement and indicate to passersby the property owners' personalities and design preferences. Lawn care takes some dedication and hard work, but there are certain ways to cut down on the amount of effort required to maintain a landscape. By employing a few different shortcuts, you can have a healthy, lush lawn without spending all of your free time cutting the grass or pruning the trees. n Stop weeds at the start. Weeding is one of the most time-consuming parts of maintaining a lawn. Weeds can proliferate throughout the lawn if not addressed in a timely manner. Once weeds take root they can become a nuisance, so it's best to treat weeds before they even have a chance to sprout. Apply a preemergent weed control product as soon as possible in the spring and then reapply it about three months later to ensure weeds are eradicated. That equates to much less tedious lawn maintenance during the season. n Plant a urine-resistant grass. Having a dog and maintaining a lush lawn has always been a particular conundrum for homeowners. Dog urine is high in nitrogen. While nitrogen, when applied in the correct ratio, can be a lawn-growth stimulant, in the large concentration that occurs in pet urine, it causes the grass to dry up and burn, resulting in bare spots. Replanting with urine-resistant grasses can help cut down on the level of damage to the lawn from your own pet or pets that happen to make potty stops on your property. The grasses most resistant to urine tend to be perennial

ryegrasses and fescues. n Wake up and water. Watering in the early mornings saves time and energy in the long run by fostering a tougher, more drought-resistant lawn. If you water early in the day, less water will be lost to evaporation. Limit watering to a few times per week, and less if you have had adequate rain. Avoid watering at night, which can expose the lawn to bacteria and attract insects. n Mow when the lawn is dry. It's not adviseable to mow the lawn when it is wet. Slippery conditions can not only make it more dangerous to push a mower, but also slow down the time it can take to tackle the chore. The mower blades can become clogged and coated with wet grass clippings, necessitating stopping and starting the task. Another thing to consider is lawn diseases spread more readily through wet clippings. Stick to mowing when the lawn is completely dry. n Let clippings fly. Mulching mowers, or those that just distribute clippings on the lawn as you go, can be healthier for the grass. They will serve as fertilizer and redistribute nutrients to the lawn as they breakdown into the soil. According to "The Organic Lawn Care Manual," leaving clippings on the lawn will fulfill about 25 percent of fertilizer requirements. Plus, you save time bagging up clippings. n Mow less often. Raise the mower's blade so that the grass is longer in between cuttings. The taller grass will shade the soil and block weeds from germinating. It also helps improve soil's moisture retention. n Don't cut corners. Adjusting a landscape design to have arches and curves can reduce the time it takes to mow and edge a property. Hard corners in a landscape will require more time to keep straight and pristine.

Dr. Nathalia Garcia, periodontist from the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine (SIU SDM), is a principal investigator for the project titled “Biomarkers of Periodontal Disease Progression.” She is seeking 60 volunteers to take part in clinical research. The multi-center study is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). A total of 500 clinical subjects will take part in the study across the country. The purpose of this study is to discover which germs make gum disease worse. The study requires volunteers to visit the SDM clinic for up to 14 visits. To qualify, a volunteer must: n Be at least 25 years old n Have at least 20 natural teeth, not counting wisdom teeth n Have not used tobacco products for at least a year Patients will be paid for participating in the study. At the study’s conclusion, participants will receive a full dental cleaning. At the SDM, Garcia will oversee 60 patients and work with colleagues Dr. Douglas Miley, professor of periodontics and implant dentistry and director of the Advanced Program in Periodontics; Dr. Debra Dixon, associate professor and section head of diagnostic sciences; and Dr. M. Jane Gillespie, section head of microbiology
and former director of research at the SDM. Three dedicated dental hygienists and a molecular biologist will also participate. For more information please contact SIU School of Dental Medicine at 314-747-9448 or 618-474-7134, or via email at birdd@mir.wustl.edu. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, approximately 64.7 million Americans suffer from an advanced form of periodontal disease. Periodontology is the study in dentistry of the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases of tissues of the teeth and gums. Garcia’s work could lead to new insights and advancements that would affect the long-term health of nearly half of adults in the U.S. The SIU School of Dental Medicine students manage approximately 35,000 patient visits each year at its patient clinics in Alton and East St. Louis. In addition, students offer oral health treatment, screenings and education to more than 10,000 people annually through a wide variety of off-campus community outreach events. These opportunities provide students the training they need to graduate and become highly skilled dentists. The School of Dental Medicine is a vital oral health care provider for residents of southern and central Illinois, and the St. Louis metropolitan region.

put into the butterfly house, and after seven days, the butterflies came out of their shells. We fed them for four days and then released them on May 12. We have really enjoyed our beautiful visitors
