State renames roads with CHS students' efforts By BOB CROSSEN Calhoun News-Herald Years after they worked on the project, five Calhoun High School seniors saw the fruition of their efforts when they were recognized on the Illinois Senate floor May 20. Morgan Bean, Amanda Donelson, Nathaniel Lammy, Macie Lehr and Ethan Sagez were invited to the Senate floor last week for their efforts in getting the names of four fallen law enforcement officers from Calhoun County recognized through renaming roads. Earlier in May, Charles Blevins Rose, Kampsville’s town marshal in the early 1900s, was added to state and national fallen law enforcement memorials. Three other Calhoun officers – Sheriff John Lammy, Illinois State Trooper George L. Fredrickson and Chief Deputy Brian Gibbons – also have their names featured on the state memorial. The students researched the history of Calhoun’s fallen officers and worked to honor them, starting with a project in the sixth grade assigned by Deann Fester, Calhoun Elementary School teacher. All of the students recognized will graduate May 31 from Calhoun High School. “It’s an honor to see the things you do – even when you’re younger – can make a difference in not just your life, but other people’s lives,” Sagez, an 18-year-old CHS

student, said. “It meant a lot to me to see they actually listen to kids.” The CHS senior, looking to complete a degree in supply chain management in college, said the hardest part of the project was digging up the information about the offi-

transfering to Western Illinois University, said. Sagez said after the group learned about the officers and their heroic service, they took the project a step further and attempted to get the officers names memorialized on the state plaque. The names did make it onto the plaque, and sections of state highways in Calhoun County will be named in honor of the fallen officers. The ferry landing in Kampsville was named after Kampsville Marshal Rose, Route 96 from Kampsville to Mozier was renamed after Sheriff Lammy, Route 100 from Grafton to Pere Marquette State Park was renamed after Trooper Fredrickson, and Route 100 in Calhoun County was designated as Brian K. Gibbons Memorial Highway during a Senate session May 20. Lammy died in a shootout with outlaws in 1881, Rose fell victim to stab wounds while making an arrest in 1911, Frederickson was electrocuted by a downed power line while responding to an accident and Gibbons was killed in a traffic accident in 2006. Sen. Sam McCann invited the five CHS seniors to the capitol Tuesday to watch the Senate pass the resolution to rename the roads after the fallen officers. “It is truly amazing that these young citizens have dedicated so much time to local heroes who gave their all in the line of

Some of the officers – like Rose – died more than 50 years ago in the line of duty, and Sagez said finding information about the people’s life and death was a struggle at times. “The records were hard to find, but once we got them, there was a lot there to put together papers and stuff to present things,” Sagez, who plans to attend Lewis and Clark Community College for two years before

By BOB CROSSEN Calhoun News-Herald The long and frigid winter caused irreparable damage to many peach buds in Calhoun County, but some varieties withstood the weather. Still, the stone fruit will be in limited supply this season. Aaron Eberlin, Eberlin’s Orchard, said when snow storms rolled through the area in January, February and parts of March, he thought his orchard would have around 65 percent of its expected bushels. But as the season wore on, and damage became more apparent – some trees were so damaged new ones need to be planted in their stead – he said the potential fell to between 45 and 50 percent of expected bushels.

Greene County man faces forgery charge in Hardin, Greene County By BOB CROSSEN Calhoun News-Herald A Greene County man faces charges for forgery and deceptive practice after writing two checks to Hurley Package Liquor in Hardin. Terry R. Andrews, 37, was charged with the two crimes and has been detained in Greene County on other charges. The forgery charge alleges he wrote a check using a relative’s name and the charge for deceptive practice alleges the intentional writing of a check

to an account with insufficient funds. Hardin Police Chief Mike Rexford said Andrews wrote two checks to Hurley’s Hardin Package Liquor. One of the checks was forged on a relative’s account, he said, while the other was written on his account with insufficient funds. “The investigation revealed that’s who it was and information was filed with the court and a warrant was obtained,” Rexford said. Andrews faces additional charges in Greene County. One warrant for his

arrest notes he faces eight counts of forgery and a deceptive practice charge while another warrant for his arrest indicates charges for burglary, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and theft under $500. Andews was picked up May 19 in Roodhouse and was booked by the Greene County Sheriff’s Department where his bail was set at $1,000 for each warrant. Rexford said White Hall Police aided in the investigation conducted by the Hardin Police Department.

Brussels looks into weight room feasibility By BOB CROSSEN Calhoun News-Herald The Brussels School Board discussed improvements and updates to the district campus during a regular board meeting May 20. During the last regular meeting in April, the school board discussed the feasibility of opening a weight room for district athletes. The issue boiled down to space available for the equipment. Superintendent Mark Martin said an individual came to the Brussels campus at no cost to the district to seek feasible options for where a weight room could be placed. Martin said the district has limited storage for spare equipment, supplies or other school materials. Ideally, the district would need another structure which could serve as both a weight room and storage room, he added. “He spent about half a day here and we looked at everything. We walked the grounds and generated a lot of 'what if' ideas,” Martin said. He said the board is awaiting a final report of feasible options at which point it will deliberate what is financially possible for the district to achieve. “It may be more than we want to do, but maybe we’ll take pieces of the

best option plan that we like and can afford and we’ll do that,” Martin said. The superintendent said money is tight for the district, and he wants to ensure the district gets the best value for its money.

“He spent about half a  day here and we looked  at everything. We  walked the grounds and  generated a lot of 'what  if' ideas.”

Mark Martin Superintendent Martin said he also alerted the board to the condition of a trailer on the district’s campus, which was used for pre-K. The trailer has sustained heavy water and weather damage while it has remained unused and vacant. “It’s a trailer that was in the county originally during The Great Flood, and was then converted to use here as a pre-K building,” Martin said. “It is falling into disrepair, and so we’re

concerned about the future of that facility and what we’re going to do about it.” Martin said it is not clear who owns and is responsible for the trailer, but said its deterioration is so great that repair of the trailer is not an affordable or possible option. The space stores old school equipment. “So many people had a hand in it when it was put here that [ownership] isn’t clear,” Martin said. The board also discussed the proposition for a school facilities occupation tax, which had also been presented at the Calhoun Community Unit School Board May 19. Martin said the Brussels School Board members had mixed reactions to the idea, and proposed meeting with the Unit 40 Board to further talk about the implications of instituting such a tax. The school facilities occupation tax is a sales tax that would be added onto retail products in addition to current taxes. The money generated through the tax could be used for any expense relating to facilities, including the payment of bonded debt from facility costs. Exemptions to the tax include automobiles, farm equipment, medicine and unprepared food, meaning (See, brussels, A2) C

“Any peaches now  are getting probably thumb-sized.  If you get any hail  now, that’ll probably wipe the rest  of them out.”

Yvonne Macauley Macauley’s Orchard “With a variety like the Red Havens, I thought we were going to have a decent crop on them,” Eberlin said. “[With] some varieties, the blooms never fell off that bad.” Eberlin’s orchard strictly deals with peaches, and Eberlin said nature’s destruction of his crop will have a significant impact on finances. With fewer peaches to sell, he said the prices could be much higher than in years past. Although the orchard has catastrophic insurance, he said the losses aren’t great enough to recoup all that was lost during the polar vortex earlier this year. “We’re going to be hurting. There’s no doubt,” Eberlin said, “but, granted, the price of peaches,

undoubtedly, is going to go up.” Eberlin said the orchard has dealt with wipeouts of crops before due to late freezes and winter storms, but noted the last major destructive winter was in 2007. That freeze was devastating for both the apple and peach crops, he added. Yvonne Macauley, Macauley’s Orchard, said years ago it seemed the storms would wipe out the crops every three to four years. The cycle was more predictable during that time, but now the time between them has grown as much as the devastation left in their wake. “We were in a cycle there for a while where it was every third year you could count on it. You’d either have half a crop or some kind of damage to them,” Macauley said. “Now I think we’re getting back into the old cycle again.” On her orchard, Macauley said she doesn’t expect a single one of her trees to produce peaches this year. Of the eight varieties she grows, only one of them seemed to withstand the storms to produce fruits on the trees. But, the peaches have already begun to fall from the limbs, which is much too early for them to have matured, she added. Peaches are only part of the crop grown on the Macauley Orchard, however, as plums have weathered the winter and fluctuating temperatures better than any other fruit produced at the orchard. “It’ll be a good plum year,” Macauley said. “Plums and hopefully blackberries, but they haven’t started to bloom yet, either. It’s been cool and I think they need a little bit warmer weather.” With the prospect of blackberries and plums, Macauley said the biggest fear now is hail storms, which could wipe out much of the plum crop. As the chunks of ice fall from the sky, she said they smash into the outer meat of the fruit denting the skin or ripping through the fruit entirely. “Any peaches now are getting probably thumb-sized. If you get any hail now, that’ll probably wipe the rest of them out,” Macauley said. (See, peaches, A2)

Peaches

(Continued from A1) Peaches are a major contributor to the spring and summer economy of Calhoun County, so much so that the Farm Bureau began talks of creating a trademark for county growers so the Calhoun name would not be used to sell peaches from elsewhere. Though Calhoun was once associated with apples, the apple businesses moved out west to Washington as the local growers started planting specialty fruits like the peach. According to the United States Department of Agriculture Census of Agriculture, from 1997 to 2002, the acreage of peach farms in the county grew from 560 to 789. Though the acreage of farms fell from 2002 to 2007, Calhoun peaches are a staple for spring and summer in the region.

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:21

The Russian writer and dissident Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn very astutely remarked that "the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being." All of us have the capacity for both good and evil within us and every day is a struggle to help the "better angels" prevail. Perhaps what separates the saints from the sinners is not so much that some sin and others don't, but that the saints recognize their sinful nature and are better at resisting their sinful impulses. The essential work of our lives is to know that this line is there and to stay on the side of the good, resisting the never-ending lure and temptation of evil. We should pray for the wisdom and discernment to recognize where the line separating good from evil runs, and for the goodwill and fortitude to stay on the side of the good. - Christopher Simon

White Hall librarian retires after 49 years By Carmen ensinger Calhoun News-Herald After nearly a half century of serving the people of White Hall, Alice Ford consulted the card catalog for the final time as librarian at White Hall Township Library on May 9. Ford will be honored for her 49 years of service with the library with a retirement party at the library on June 1 from 2 to 4 p.m. Ford, a 1960 graduate of North Greene High School, began work as an assistant librarian in 1965 after applying for several different positions in White Hall. “I was without a job at the time and had applied for the library position and also put my application in at Search’s IGA store when it was here in White Hall,” Ford said. “I got called for the store job but I only worked there about three days because I got a call from the library and I really wanted to work at the library.” She had no idea the job would turn into a career. “Most people don’t stay with a job this long but I have lived here all my life and really had no desire to go anywhere else,” Ford said. “I wasn’t one who liked to get out and drive in the winter time to get to another job so I just stayed here.” The earlier days of the library were much different than it is today. “Back when I first started, the library was always full of kids,” Ford recalls. “Kids didn’t have all these extra activities that they have to do today and they didn’t have cars to run around in. We were open from 7 (a.m.) to 9 in the evening and every table in there would have kids in it. They were either studying or it was the place to go to meet their friends.” Of course this was long before computers and e-books. “Back then we really checked out a lot of books,” Ford said. “Circulation is not nearly as good as it used to be because there are so many other options out there.” Ford took over the head librarian position from Ina Knight in 1983 and immediately set about to give it her

own personal touch. “So many libraries I’ve seen are so stuffy because you walk in and there is just row after row of metal shelves with books,” Ford said. “I tried to make our library a more attractive place when I took over. We have a fireplace with two comfortable chairs in front of it. We have people studying genealogy come in here from all over and the one thing they said is that our library looks so nice and inviting.” Ford ushered in the computer age during her tenure. “Mrs. Knight didn’t think we need-

“i’m going to miss the people more than anything. i like visiting with people and i had regulars that came in every single day to read the newspapers or just chat. i will miss that.”

Alice Ford Librarian at White Hall Township Library ed computers,” Ford said. “After I became head librarian, we started out with one computer for the office. Then we thought we needed one for the public to use. Then it became two and now we have four public computers here.” If Ford had stayed just one more year longer, she would have no doubt seen the library become fully automated. “We started the process of becoming automated like Carrollton last year,” Ford said. “I contacted a lady at our library system in Edwardsville and she came up and talked to us and the board decided it was time we became automated, so we are in the process now.”

When asked why she didn’t stay just one more year to reach the halfcentury mark, Ford said it was a decision fueled by family tragedy including the death of her mother at the age of 103 last year and her brother. “I thought about it and they asked me why I didn’t stay just one more year to reach 50 years, but I just had so many things happen last year that I decided it was time,” Ford said. “I just decided I don’t want to work until the day I drop and made my decision.” Ford has seen three generations grow up through the library. “People will come in now that are grown that were little kids when I first started and they are bringing their kids now,” Ford said. “When I see them I think of their name and I always remember them as they were little. I see them now and I feel really old because they are so grown up.” The library has been forced to change with the times and these days offers a lot more than just books. “When I started, we didn’t have movies to check out or audio books – that has all come about since I have been here,” Ford said. “The work of the librarian has also changed a lot. These days we spend a lot of time doing paperwork for grants and such – something I’m not going to miss at all.” Of course that is not saying she won’t miss other aspects of being librarian for most of her adult life. “I’m going to miss the people more than anything,” Ford said. “I like visiting with people and I had regulars that came in every single day to read the newspapers or just chat. I will miss that.” Still, Ford is not going to be a stranger to the library. “I still plan on working there as a fill in if someone has to go on vacation or to a meeting or something and they need someone extra to work,” Ford said. “And I will be available if they every need any help with anything. I was there three weeks with the new librarian and I tried to teach her everything I had learned in 49 years in those three weeks, but if they need me they can call me.”

50+ travel: tips on choosing the perfect tour or cruise

(StatePoint) For many baby boomers, travel is their favorite leisure activity. Whether to cross something off their bucket list or to indulge in a passion, the 50 and older crowd is on the go. Organized tours and cruises are among the top choices for vacation among boomers, and the good news is that there are hundreds of options to choose from with both. Clay Buckley, vice president, lifestyle, at AARP Services, Inc., a taxable subsidiary of AARP, says boomers should consider many factors when deciding on the perfect trip. “Some travelers over 50 may prefer a relaxing itinerary among people their own age, while others want to be on the go with people of all ages,” says Buckley. “Luckily, the options in cruises and tours are vast enough to suit any style, budget and need.” Buckley recommends boomer travelers consider the following when planning a cruise or tour: n Trip activity level: Travelers should determine objectives for their trips. Is it to rest and relax? Learn? Enjoy lots of activities? Tours and cruises often have themes and all have

SpotmatikPhoto - Fotolia.com

set itineraries, so it’s important to know what to expect before you go. n Destination: Some cruises and tours head for far-reaching places and little-known ports of call, while others stick to more mainstream destinations. Others combine the two. Travelers should consider the appeal of all legs of their trip. Some also like to take trips that enable them to add on other destinations or more days to the end or beginning of the trip. n Timing and budget: Prices for tours and cruises may be lower in off seasons such as spring and fall, and may also help travelers avoid weather extremes. Also, single travelers should be aware that some trips charge for lodging based on double occupancy. In addition, the cost to get to and from the trip should be factored into a trip budget. For example, you may have to fly to and from a cruise port. n Size: From intimate, small-group excursions by van or small boat, to large tours via bus or cruise ship, size makes a difference. Travelers should be realistic about their desire to be around large or small groups for extended periods and their need for independent

travel or time alone. They should also be aware that some cruises and tours cater specifically to families. n Physical limitations: Travelers with physical limitations or special medical needs should assess their ability to engage in the trip itinerary. They should also check whether medical care is readily available or accessible while on the trip. n Discounts: Vacationers should remember they can save on their trip by seeking out available discounts. For example, from cruises to rental cars, a variety of travel discounts are available to AARP members. Discount providers are selected only after a rigorous process is performed to ensure AARP members receive a valuable offer they want and the quality service they expect, says Buckley. More information about discounts and limited-time offers on cruises and tours is available to AARP members at www.aarpdiscounts.com. By taking several factors into consideration, you can make the most of your next vacation.

Learning about your family history is important

bst2012 - Fotolia.com

(StatePoint) It’s no wonder that genealogy is one of the most popular topics on the Internet -- family history can be fascinating, and learning more about it is an excellent vehicle for generating conversation and fostering inter-generational bonds. Beyond creating a family tree, consider generating a more thorough narrative by conducting an oral history interview with your loved ones. “Through an oral history, you can capture key life moments and connect the past and future,” says Nancy Rogers, senior vice president of Corporate Responsibility at Lincoln Financial Group. The company is honoring the legacy of Abraham Lincoln and the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation through its Lincoln’s Legacy initiative, which includes a call for recorded oral histories conducted by Americans nationwide. With so much technology now available in the palm of your hand, discovering and capturing your fam-

ily’s history is easier than ever. From conducting research online to recording and sharing oral histories, take advantage of available tools. Here are some guidelines to make the most of the experience: n Prepare questions, don’t just wing it. You’ll have a much more interesting conversation if you have a series of open-ended questions ready in advance. For example, “what historical event left the most lasting impression on your life?” Avoid yes or no questions. n Consider your relatives’ ages and what life might have been like for them during their childhood. Were their schools or neighborhoods racially diverse? Ask your grandparent or older relative to compare life today to that time. “You may not think about it often, but Americans have not always enjoyed the freedom and opportunities they do today. Talking to older relatives about their lives and the lives of their parents and grandpar-

ents can shed light on the struggles and challenges of the past,” says Allison Green, chief diversity officer at Lincoln Financial. n Use a prop to get the conversation started, such as an old photo or a trinket. These keepsakes can inspire both questions and answers. n Preserve your interview by recording it forever. Choose a welllit, quiet area. Use a camcorder or a smartphone -- whatever works for you. n Don’t keep your interview to yourself. There are ways you can share it with the world. For example, Lincoln Financial Group is calling for recordings to be incorporated into an anthology of voices. To upload your conversation or learn more about the initiative, visit www. LincolnsLegacyOralHistories.com. Everyone has an interesting story to tell and a legacy to leave. Don’t let the fascinating fabric of your family history fade away undiscovered.

Illinois Conservation Police warn landowners to beware of timber theft Two recent timber theft cases have resulted in hefty settlements and felony charges for loggers that cut trees without permission. The Illinois Conservation Police reminds landowners to make sure loggers are licensed, bonded and that a written contract is obtained prior to the harvest. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry will also assist the landowners with marking their timber, and encourages landowners to contact them at (888) 244-1706 or visit the IDNR website: http://dnr.state.il.us/ conservation/forestry/. • Eighty-eight white oak trees illegally harvested A central Illinois logging company must pay $75,000 for illegally harvesting 88 mature white oak trees within the Tallmadge Sand Forest Land and Water Reserve owned by The Nature Conservancy and protected by the Illinois Nature Preserves Commission. The theft of trees valued conservatively at $20,000 was first discovered at the Kankakee County site in September 2009. The Illinois Nature Preserves Commission within the Illinois Department of Natural Resources works to provide legal protection to Illinois’ remaining natural areas. As part of the settlement agreement, Poignant Logging, Inc. of Lacon and LeRoy Poignant, Jr., will pay The Nature Conservancy $75,000 as compensation for the stolen timber and damage done to the site. In the process of removing these trees, Poignant and the loggers caused over $61,780 in dam-

ages to the ground and understory. The logging company was hired by the Antlers and Wings Hunt Club of Kankakee County, operated by Anthony Dinovo and located adjacent to the protected forest. Loggers accessed the forest from the hunt club property. As part of the agreement, the club will sell 69 acres to the TNC to expand the Tallmadge Sand Forest LWR. TNC has an option to purchase an additional 41 acres. • Eleven landowners not compensated for timber harvested The Illinois Conservation Police investigated a complaint in September 2013 from a Stephenson County landowner alleging timber had been cut on property owned by 11 different landowners, and that payment was not received. The value of the stolen timber was estimated to be in excess of $97,000 dollars. Ronald J. Hertel, 63, of Shannon, IL was arrested April 16 after the Stephenson County State’s Attorney authorized 16 felony charges for theft of timber, and 12 misdemeanor charges for failure to pay the IDNR four percent harvest fee, and failure to provide IDNR an accounting of the timber harvest. Equipment used to conduct the illegal harvest also was confiscated, including a John Deere Log Skidder and other gear. Additional charges are pending in Carroll County. Conservation Police are aware Hertel was cutting in several other counties in northern Illinois. Anyone with additional information should call 217-7826431.

and Recreation Department (JPRD). The department is offering a program for children 3 to 4 years old. Itty Bitty T-Ball is a non-competitive skill development program that consists of small group rotations through skill stations. Stations include hitting, base running, catching, grounders and throwing. The program meets once per week for six weeks for 45 minutes. The session runs from Sunday, June 15 to July 27 on Diamond F at Dolan Park in Jerseyville, located at the corner of June and Carpenter Street. In the event of rain, the session will be pulled inside the Susnig Center. There will be no session held on July 6. On the sixth and final week, participants will be divided and scrimmage an entire game. There are four times to choose from: 4 p.m., 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. The success of this program is dependent upon volunteer station leaders, therefore parents/guardians will be asked to be volunteers each week. Participants will need a glove, water bottle and sneakers. Program fee is $30 per child and includes a participation medal. The program is open to all city and non-city residents. Register soon because space is limited in each session and the deadline is Friday, June 6. For more information or to learn how to register, please visit jerseyvilleil.us/ParkRec/forms.htm, call JPRD at 618-498-2222 or email jerseyvilleparkandrec@gtec.com.

Register your child now for fall soccer with Jerseyville Parks and Recreation Department (JPRD). Teams are coed and will be divided by grades (entering in the fall): 1/2, 3/4 and 5/6. Practices will begin in August and games will run from September through October. All games will be played at Dolan Park in Jerseyville, typically on Tuesday and Thursday nights and Saturday mornings. Shin guards are required and plastic or rubber soccer cleats are recommended. The league’s success depends on parents as volunteer coaches. Registration is $30 per child and includes a game T-shirt (not jersey). There is also a traveling fall soccer league for children entering 7th and 8th grade in the fall. Practices begin in August and games will be run from September through October. All games will be played on Sunday afternoons and/or evenings, with the possibility of an occasional Saturday game. Possible travel locations include, but are not limited to: Litchfield, Carl-

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL/SOFTBALL ROUNDUP

Down to the wire: Calhoun clubs clipped in close regional title games

The Calhoun High School softball team was one strike away from winning its fourth regional championship in as many seasons, but a bases-clearing double by Carrollton's Macy Pohlman with two outs in the top of the seventh inning made the difference as the No. 2 seed Lady Hawks upset the top-seeded Lady Warriors in a 7-5 decision Saturday in the title game at the Hardin Class 1A Regional. Calhoun led 5-1 through the first four innings before Carrollton got itself to within one run of the lead in the top of the fifth. The Lady Warriors earned their spot in the regional championship tilt by beating Brussels 7-0 Tuesday, May 20, at Calhoun High School. Allie Hurley hit a two-run home run to finish with three runs batted in and Madison Lehr went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a pair of RBIs and as many runs scored to lead the offense. It was the school-record 30th

victory of the season for Calhoun, which finished its 2014 season 30-7 overall and 7-0 within the Western Illinois Valley Conference South en route to winning the league title. In baseball action, Calhoun came just shy of securing its first regional championship in school history as North Greene claimed a 1-0 decision Saturday in the title game at the White Hall Class 2A Regional. The Spartans got the game's lone run across home plate in the top of the fourth inning and made it hold up down the stretch. The Warriors nearly drew even with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the game-tying run was thrown out from right field at home plate. The teams shared this season's WIVC South baseball title after splitting a pair of games during the regular season and their three meetings were decided by a total of four runs. Calhoun finished its 2014 season with a 23-14 overall record.
