Art Under the Trees a hit for visitors, vendors By BoB Crossen Calhoun News-Herald In its first summer festival, the Calhoun Art Guild’s Art Under the Trees drew a steady crowd at Stone Bridge Valley under clear skies Saturday after a week of rain. Lines of tents filled the lawn at Stone Bridge Valley with more than 20 artists showcasing their work while others offered demonstrations for how they paint, weave or carve. Within the first two hours of opening, at least 50 people attended the event. Laura Blair, Blair Lair Studios, said for a first-year event, she was proud to see how many people turned out to enjoy the weather, art and food. “It’s a beautiful day and the first year is always the hardest and we’ve got a good crowd out here,” Blair said. “Usually you might take home a little disappointment as a vendor [for a first year event] because people have got to get excitement going about it, but it’s been steady all day.” Blair said she had never been to Calhoun County for any showing of the art made in her studio, adding the organization of the event was very smooth. She said her booth – decorated with stone and glass work, handmade clothing and ceramics – showcases the work of multiple people who work at Blair Lair Studios located in Alton. “We’re several people who work together under the name of Blair Lair Studios. We all bring different talents,” Blair said. Just a few booths away from Blair’s was a multimedia artist who said he tailors his works to fit the clientele at the shows he attends. Mark H. Walters built rustic wood frames around his series of landscapes and wildlife paintings and drawings spanning his booth at the event June 14. “I like painting everything,” Walters said. “I like doing portraits. Just a little bit of everything.” On the table laid canes and other pieces carved out of wood, as well. Walters said he has been painting for more years than he can remember, but it wasn’t until recently that he began to sell his work. The art cluttered his home, which was the motivating factor in beginning the sale of his work. “I never had any lessons or anything,” Walters said. “Old Settlers Day last year was the first time I ever even let anybody see anything, so this is like my maiden voyage, too.” For a first-year event, he said Art Under the Trees was home to friendly visitors and vendors who were interested in his artwork and techniques. “I think it’s something that could catch on real quick,” Walters said, noting the shift in the economy also made

Attendees of the event were also happy with the diversity of the work displayed at the event and were entertained in talking to the artists and representatives at the booths. August Bland of Hardin said he liked the Calhoun County Historical Society booth because of the knowledge the members of the society have of the county. “He’s got knowledge, I’m telling you,” August said. “Every time I talk to him, I don’t want to leave.” Janice Bland said she and August came to support their family mem-

County revisits radio connectivity issues

By BoB Crossen Calhoun News-Herald Seeking to squash connectivity and sound issues with the radio system used by emergency services in the county, a representative of B-K Electric explained the problem to the commissioners. During a meeting June 16 in Hardin, Jim Eatock, B-K Electric representative, explained the problems faced by the county sheriff’s office, county highway department and ambulance services throughout the county. B-K Electric was instrumental in updating the county’s radio system.

“Calhoun County is what  I like to refer to, as far as  radio coverage, is the tin  shed from hell.”

Jim Eatock B-K Electric representative The Federal Communications Commission required all radio frequencies be made more narrow to allow for more frequencies to be issued in January 2013. Because the bands are more narrow, the waves do not reach as far and can be disrupted much easier than the wider bands. Eatock said to counteract the problem, Calhoun County upgraded its repeater in Hardin and synced it to the radio repeaters located in Batchtown for the southern part of the county and Kampsville for the northern areas. Calhoun County Sheriff Bill Heffington said said during a meeting earlier this month that using the northern and southern towers can be "flakey." Eatock said the transmission problems in Calhoun County could stem from the environment around the towers. “Calhoun County is what I like to refer to, as

By BoB Crossen Calhoun News-Herald A student from Calhoun High School was awarded his degree from the state for his work since his freshman year raising cattle. Connor Carmody, FFA section president who will be a senior at CHS next school year, said the degree is the second highest an FFA member can achieve, noting only the American Degree is higher. He said the award makes him feel accomplished. “Not many people get to get it,” Carmody said. “A small percentage get it and you wear a different pin on your jacket from most people, so it’s obvious that you have it. Whenever you have it, you can run for higher offices than you could without it.” With the State Degree, Carmody said he was named section president in the last month of the school year. The work keeps him busy, he said, but the continuous flow of work is something he enjoys. “I’m excited for it. It’ll be a good year,” Carmody said. “I go to meetings every month or two. I’m considered a minor state officer.” With the title, he said he’ll visit the FFA chapters within his section to learn about what the different

chapters are working on and create connections with those people alongside the state officers for FFA. Achieving the milestone requires continued work on a project for at least two years with detailed record keeping to prove the student’s worth for the degree. Carmody said he didn’t expect keeping his books up-to-date would be such strenuous work. “You have to keep a record book on some kind of project you’ve been doing throughout high school,” Carmody said. “Your record book goes through about two or three different levels of judging to be accepted.” He said the degree requires recording details from the size of his cattle to the materials needed to fix a fence, how much it costs and where the materials were purchased. Carmody has been raising cattle since his freshman year and, according to the National FFA Organization website, had to earn and productively invest $1,000 into the business along with 300 hours of work outside the classroom. Additionally, he had to demonstrate leadership in 10 parliamentary law procedures, give a six-minute speech, and serve as an officer or (See, ffa, A2)

Courthouse takes step toward construction By BoB Crossen Calhoun News-Herald The Calhoun County Commissioners approved to begin cleaning out the old grade school in Hardin to prepare it for the next phase of the construction project. far as radio coverage, is the tin shed from hell,” Eatock said. “Hills, valleys, shadows … radio waves do not like rocks and trees, which you guys seem to have a few of.” Because there are many rolling hills with valleys and a lot of forested areas throughout the county, sometimes the radio waves will have dead spots where contact cannot be made. Heffington said the sheriff’s office often uses its cellphones in those areas to combat the issue. The sheriff said when trying to use the repeaters in the north and the south, sometimes only one side of the transmission will go through to the other, meaning he can hear the dispatcher talking but the sheriff’s office cannot hear him, or vice versa. However, when he uses the Hardin repeater in those areas, communication is much more clear. Eatock said the problem could also be a matter of calibration which had not been done since it was originally installed. “I will get back down here this week … and I will go through audio alignment,” Eatock said while troubleshooting with Heffington at the meeting. The B-K Electric representative said he would check the service of the towers throughout the county and run a voice alignment to see if any problems would be fixed. One solution mentioned at the previous meeting was resetting the routers on the towers to resyncronize all the repeaters when the system shuts down. Normally, somebody from the sheriff’s office would contact Eatock to reset the system remotely. Commissioner Chairman Doug Wilschetz asked Eatock if he could train some employees of the sheriff's department to reset the connection if it fails. Eatock said he would work with the department and teach them how to do so through the web application. The commissioners also discussed insurance options for county employees for the coming year. Renewing with its current provider, United Health Care, would see an increase of approximately 32 percent in expense to the county. (See, county, A2)

Chairman Doug Wilschetz said County Engineer Barry Webster would help clear the rest of building, which had been discussed by the chairman, Webster and the Owner’s Representative Bernie Loft in early May. “There was a whole checklist of items the architect sent to Bernie [and] to Barry [like] the items to be moved, the tests that they need to take of the foundation and different things that

needed to be done,” Wilschetz said, noting Loft estimated the cost to be around $20,000 for the labor. The chairman said Webster may hire part-time employees to help with clearing the structure, adding commissioners Phil Robeen and Larry Wieneke, finance committee members, keep the work in mind while working on the county budget. The workers will also be tasked with completing a list of other items to prepare the building for construction, including (See, courthouSe, A2)

remainder of the fiscal year. Superintendent Lori Hopkins said she is glad proration is staying at the same funding level as last year because the projected 65 percent proration would have been devastating to the district’s finances. “We’ve already planned three years and looked at our projections. We already did our cuts, so 89 percent – yes, it’s still an 11 percent drop – but I do have hope for the future,” Hopkins said. Both superintendents have also been following the status of Senate Bill 16, a bill that aims to change the funding formula from the state to Illinois public school districts. The bill uses weights to calculate how much funding would be sent from the state based on a district’s ability to pay with its tax base. Some of the weighted factors

be awarded to those who graduated 12 months prior to the convention at which the degree is given. “It’ll be a while before I can get that one, but you have to raise even more money or work even more hours,” Carmody said. Reinforcing the foundation is one of the expenses mentioned in the itemized list of work to be done on the building before any employees may move into the building. When work on the initial phase is completed, nine county employees will have offices located in the county government building. The plan originally prioritized the circuit clerk, state’s attorney, courtroom and judge’s chambers to be located on the second floor of the building, but was amended in April.

However, the county could switch to a different provider, Coventry, and remain around the same price as it pays now, although at least 75 percent of the employees must use the service. Wilschetz questioned whether the county should continue to purchase insurance for the employees because he heard some had desires to seek it individually. The commissioners agreed to have the employees surveyed about what they would like before making a decision. In other business, the commissioners: n Approved the minutes of the previous meeting and

include transportation and the population of low-income students. Sievers said changing the funding formula favors schools like Calhoun and Jersey’s. However, school districts closer to Chicago with higher tax bases for local funding would see reductions in funding, and Sievers expects there will be changes to the bill before it has an opportunity to pass. “I hope that Senate Bill 16, even though it didn’t pass in the spring, will continue to have momentum in the fall and next spring,” Sievers said. “I don’t see it passing in the fall. I see it passing in the spring if it is going to pass. I think the bill will be altered a little bit, too.” She said she hopes the picture for school funding in Illinois is more clear after the gubernatorial race in November.

degree. He said at least two other students at Calhoun High School are working towards the achievement. Because a member has to have two years membership with FFA to be considered for the degree, Carmody said some of the FFA members still have approximately a year before they can turn in their books for judging.

The amendment allows for the county clerk, treasurer and supervisor of assessment’s offices to move into the building on the first floor after the phase is completed. Renovation of the building is paid using a $1 million donation from Delford Richter. Wilschetz signed a contract with Richter last summer to renovate the structure into a new courthouse provided the building be named after his father, Marvin Richter, a major figure in the agriculture community.

The Calhoun superintendent said projections for GSA were as low as 65 percent proration, meaning the public school districts would lose out on 35 percent of state funding. The 11 percent loss has been constant for the past three years. The Illinois Department of Public Health has notified Boyd Healthcare Services of Thomas H. Boyd Memorial Hospital achieving official designation as an Emergent Stroke Ready Hospital. “In order to gain the Emergent Stroke Ready Hospital (ESRH) designation, Boyd has worked hard over the last three years to meet the specific criteria required,” said Peggy Jones, Illinois Critical Access Hospital Network Stroke Consultant. Boyd has been very active in measuring outcomes of patients, time of treatment, and reporting those figures to the state. In 2009, the Illinois General Assembly passed a bill allowing the creation of stroke systems of care in Illinois. This law identifies hospitals capable of providing emergent stroke care and directs the local Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to transport possible acute stroke patients to these hospitals. With Boyd Hospital being designated, it means that now stroke patients can receive the highest quality treatment, right here in their own community.

Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Larry Pohlman on their anniversary of 50 years. Birthday greetings to Helen Campbell. We received 4 1/2 inches of rain last week. Martha’s visitors Thursday were my deer hunter friends; John from Kansas City, Mr. and Mrs. Russ Moody and family from South Carolina, Jeff and kids from Freeburg. They fixed lunch and we ate on the porch then they went down to the woods to look things over.

Later that afternoon they fixed supper, BBQ with all the fixins. I had a nice visit with them. They enjoyed to finally seeing the area when in full bloom. Saturday, Dennis, Martha, Bill, Rita, and Lexi, and other family members joined Lane at Carrollton Park for his third birthday and was hosted by Jason and Marlinda. We had a nice lunch. Saturday Rita, Martha, and Lexi attended the musical show at the Jerseyville High School that was sponsored by Jerseyville Minstrel Alliance. Thanks Bill for waiting for us.

Saturday afternoon Dennis, Vivian, Bo, Kristina, Olivia, Brandon, LeAnn, Garry, and Marlena went on the zip line in Grafton. Bill, Rita, Lexi, and Martha joined them to eat at Aeries Riverview Winery. I enjoyed visiting with Gary and Mary Ann Buck who were also at the winery. Sunday Jason, Marlinda, and Lane came to Martha’s to fix lunch for Terry for Father’s Day. Jason fried fish with all the trimmings and Marlinda made brownies with ice cream. That afternoon Matt and Reece came to visit.

Plan to enter. There are so many talented and artistic people in Calhoun and everyone enjoys seeing their talents on display. Saturday afternoon Bernadine Snyders and Suzanne Kamp enjoyed attending the Calhoun Art Guild “Art Under the Trees.” It was an outdoor art show and sale at Stone Bridge Vlley Art Center in Michael. Lindy and Martha Bick attended a Father’s Day meal with Bernie and Robin Hillen and their family at the Hillen Farm. Everyone had a good time. My Back Yard Sanctuary By Clay Harrison When I wake up each morning, I’m blessed as I can be When I draw back the curtains To see what I can see. My back yard’s a cottage garden With plants and shrubs galore, And multitudes of singing birds Just outside my door. Squirrels and groundhogs come to visit, Some possums here and there, And, in Summer, the hummingbirds Entertain me in midair. The fireflies delight me too, Above honeysuckle vines, While bees and butterflies are sleeping With moonlight on the pines. Every day’s a picture postcard Created just for me As seasons change and days unfold Like petals silently. Something new is always blooming; Something old fades away, And the blessings keep on coming, At sunrise every day.

All graduates of Class 1955 who are interested in having our 60th Class Reunion, please e-mail me at millieschumann@frontier. com, call me at 618-653-4426, fax me at 618-653-4800, or drop me a note at PO Box 24, Kampsville, IL 62053. I thought we could have it in August like we did five years ago, have it catered, and rent the Presbyterian Hall. I am not able to do a lot of decorating, etc. so, if anyone wants to do so, have at it or we will just enjoy a good meal and visiting with old friends. I have enough money in 1955 class account that I think most of the food will be paid for, if not, I don’t believe we will have to pay much. Let me know so I can rent the Hall and book the caterer. Waiting to hear from you.

Redeye and I attended the 100th birthday party for Helen Campbell Sunday. Beautiful decorations, delicious cakes, and good crowd. Her son Larry and daughter-in-law, Jo were here from Tennessee, many family members, old and young friends were in attendance. Her daughter, Linda and son-in-law, Otto, who, also happen to be my brother and sister-in-law, had the burden of the planning and taking care of all the little last minute things that need to be done. Good job and wonderful party for a wonderful lady. Xander, our great grandson from NC is spending the summer (week days only) with us. I was feeling really rotten today so he was my caregiver. Last Thursday

evening I woke up and heard both Xander and Redeye in the kitchen. Seems as tho Xander decided Grandpa and I needed a midnight snack, so he made each of us an omelet in the microwave. Different by not bad. Bev, T and Xander traveled to Centralia to attend a birthday party and help Terrill’s Dad celebrate Father’s Day. I took Redeye to Golden Correl, and there was a killer crowd, but they got us thru the line pretty fast and then we had a great dinner. I have been really exhausted today and have spent most of it in bed, so what you see, is what you get this week. And how was your week???? See you next week.

■ Blessings from Belleview What a wonderful weekend at Belleview Community Church. On Saturday night, we enjoyed a wonderful concert by the Greenes. We laughed, we cried, and we clapped to great songs and testimonies. On Sunday, we honored our fathers and enjoyed a great service as well. We are looking forward to our next installment of the “Possibility in Impossibility” summer series. On June 29 at 6 p.m. we are looking forward to having David Ring. You have never heard a speaker like David Ring. He has been seen on John Hagee and Jerry Falwell. We are excited about him coming and would like to invite you to join us for the tremendous event. Do you remember when I wrote about a year ago and talked briefly about my hearing disability? I discovered another part of my story about two weeks ago when my mother came to visit. Even though the doctor strongly urged my parents to send me to the school for the deaf to help better prepare me for life as a deaf person, my parents refused. The idea of sending their son away to

by Chris Thomas ■ 217-734-9012

a school to live did not sit well with them. When I entered into kindergarten, the school district had a staff member who assists people with special needs. My mother told me of the first day I ever met her. It is a story I never knew until now. On the first day that I met this special needs assistance, she asked me what I wanted to be. I do not recall this particular incident, but my mother said that without missing a beat I wanted to be a preacher. Of all the fantastical careers, both real and fictitious, as a five year old, I picked preacher. The Special needs assistance politely and immediately responded “Then let’s get started.” Here is where it gets difficult. My mother and my teacher looked at each other in the eye and rolled their eyes and nodded their heads in disagreement. There is a reason. To see that reason is to rewind to three years before in a small doctor’s office in that small eastern NC home where I was raised. As a two year old I had been diagnosed with a hearing disability. My parents were given a list; a list of limitations that I will

face and struggle with because of my hearing disability. On that list…. the ability to speak well. Fast forward now to the scene in the hallway. Her hands on my shoulder, a smile on her face, and the encouraging twinkle in her eye she put me on a path to succeed in school. I am not saying that my mother and teacher did not help. In fact, that cannot be further from the truth. My mother’s dedication to help me succeed could not be surpassed. We now fast-forward thirty-nine years. I pastor a wonderful church in northern Calhoun County. I have had the privilege of speaking in several states from North Carolina down to Alabama north to Minnesota. I have done what a doctor considered forty years ago to be impossible. Ultimately, many of the limitations we face are the ones we place upon ourselves. The LORD said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes him mute or deaf, or seeing or blind? Is it not I, the LORD? Now then go, and I, even I, will be with your mouth, and teach you what you are to say.” (Exodus 4:11,12)

God Is Not an Object

And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 3:18

We often talk about God as if He is an object to be contemplated or prayed to and that he resides in a faraway place we call Heaven. But, God is a subject and not an object. That is, God is not an object like a stone or a tree, but is a subject like you or I who is capable of experience and indeed capable of the kind of inter-subjective experience that we have with others which we call relationships. The reason that it is wrong to stare at others or to "use" them is because they are subjects, not objects. But, God is a special sort of subject in that He is everywhere (omnipresent) and yet not concrete and tangible in the way that human subjects are. Therefore, we cannot know God in the direct way that we know our fellow human beings. How people know God is different for everyone. Some know Him through His creation while others know Him through prayer and meditation. Still others may know Him through their work with the poor and unfortunate, while others will see Him in His representatives in their churches, synagogues and mosques. However you see and know God, be aware that He loves you and cares for you and wants you to be happy. - Christopher Simon

Calhoun County final Home Instead Senior Care raises money multiplier announced to help find cure for Alzheimer’s Calhoun County has been issued a final property assessment equalization factor of 0.9307, according to Brian Hamer, Director of the Illinois Department of Revenue. The property assessment equalization factor, often called the “multiplier”, is the method used to achieve uniform property assessments among counties, as required by law. This equalization is particularly important because some of the state’s 6,600 local taxing districts overlap into two or more counties (e.g. school districts, junior college districts, fire protection districts). If there were no equalization among counties, substantial inequities among taxpayers with comparable properties would result. Under a law passed in 1975, property in Illinois should be assessed at one-third (1/3) of its market value. Farm property is assessed differently, with farm homesites and dwellings subject to regular assessing and equalization procedures, but with farmland assessed at one-third of its agriculture economic value. Farmland is not subject to the state equalization factor. Assessments in Calhoun County are at 35.81 percent of market value, based on sales of properties in 2010, 2011, and 2012. The equalization factor currently being assigned is for 2013 taxes, payable in 2014. Last year’s equalization factor for the county was 1.0000. The final assessment equaliza-

tion factor was issued after a public hearing on the tentative factor. The tentative factor issued in February 2014 was 0.8955. The equalization factor is determined annually for each county by comparing the price of individual properties sold over the past three years to the assessed value placed on those properties by the county supervisor of assessments/county assessor. If this three-year average level of assessment is one-third of the market value, the equalization factor will be one (1). If the average level of assessment is greater than one-third of market value, the equalization factor will be less than one (1). And if the average level of assessment is less than one-third of market value, the equalization factor will be greater than one (1). A change in the equalization factor does not mean total property tax bills will increase or decrease. Tax bills are determined by local taxing bodies when they request money each year to provide services to local citizens. If the amount requested by local taxing districts is not greater than the amount received in the previous year, then total property taxes will not increase even if assessments increase. The assessed value of an individual property determines what portion of the tax burden a specific taxpayer will assume. That individual’s portion of tax responsibility is not changed by the multiplier.

Get up close & personal with hummingbirds A hummingbird’s wings flap an average of 80 times per second which accounts for the humming sound that can be heard as they zip from one flower to the next. They need to consume about twice their weight in nectar each day just to maintain their fast-paced life style. Hundreds of these amazing birds migrate to Pere Marquette State Park every year. Many can be seen flitting around the annual Hummingbird Festival at the Lodge where locals will have an opportunity to learn all about these beautiful birds. The Festival will take place on Sunday, June 29 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. and will feature live music, craft vendors, restaurant favorites,

wine tastings and children's activities. Cathie Hutcheson, a licensed hummingbird bander from Makanda, will be catching and banding the birds from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Banding is the process of attaching a small, individually numbered metal or plastic tag to the leg or wing of a wild bird. This enables the individual bird to be identified should it later be recaptured or recovered. The banding event will give anyone attending the festival a chance to see these amazing creatures as they are measured and banded. For more information about the Hummingbird Festival and other Lodge events call 618-786-2331 or visit online at www.pmlodge.net.

Home Instead Senior Care is planning a fundraising event to help find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease currently affects more than 5 million Americans and every 67 seconds someone in the U.S. develops Alzheimer’s. Home Instead is passionate about finding a cure for Alzheimer’s as many clients and families are affected by the disease. Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S., which is approxi-

mately 500,000 individuals each year. Home Instead Senior Care sees the effect the disease has on families and understands the devastation it can leave. It’s a diagnosis that can strike in the hearts of families. Research shows that this disease will continue to increase in older adults and in 2050 the number of older adults with Alzheimer’s disease may nearly triple to as many as 16 million diagnosed. Home

Instead is asking the community to join them as it supports finding a cure. The Home Instead Senior Care Team will be hosting a quarter auction Thursday, July 24 at 6 p.m. at the KC Hall in Carrolton. All proceeds from the auction will go to the Alzheimer’s Association. Dinner and an open bar will be available during the auction. Home Instead is currently accepting donation for the event and look-

ing for vendors who are interesting in participating in the event. For more information, please contact Cindy Cannon – Home Instead Senior Care at 618-535-5206 The Home Instead Senior Care team will participate in a Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Saturday, September 20 in Springfield, Illinois, sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association. Relay for Life hosts survivor breakfast Calhoun County’s 2014 Relay for Life of the American Cancer Society was a huge success with an overflowing crowd. The event was held at the Hardin Presbyterian Church Hall. The event began with a delicious survivor breakfast consisting of a variety of egg casseroles, fresh fruit, and numerous baked goods. Jennifer White made most of the pastries and having formerly owning a bakery, they were very exceptional. The breakfast was served by the ladies of the Presbyterian Church and the Relay for Life committee consisting of Joan Held, Sarah Kinder, Linda Watt, Jennifer White, and Jo An Corbett. Following the serving of the breakfast the program began with Jo An Corbett as Mistress of Ceremonies introducing Bob Biziallion as the honorary chairman and survivor, with 14 members of his family in attendance. Pam Biziallion Long, Bob’s youngest daughter, gave a very inspiring talk about cancer, which resulted in a standing ovation by the crowd. Jacob Biziallion, son

of Danny and Donna Biziallion and grandson of Bob and June Biziallion sang a beautiful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Mistress of ceremony, Jo An Corbett, pointed out that Bob’s father, Bob Sr., as well as June’s mother, Mrs. Helen Kraut, all were former workers and collectors of donations for the American Cancer Society in the days when door to door solicitations were made. The keynote speaker for the event was Dr. Kermit Bell, Calhoun County’s own optometrist and graduate of West Point. Dr. Bell has long been a dedicated worker for the Cancer Society in Calhoun County and he gave a very inspiring talk. Monica Hay, entertained with several vocal numbers. Monica is a three time survivor of cancer. Chairman, Sarah Kinder, who carried out a butterfly theme, beautifully decorated the hall. The life of a butterfly is very much like one’s life with cancer. Following the adjournment in the hall, the group proceeded to the outdoors where Joan Held chaired the

activities. It began with the Color Guard of the American Legion and the singing of the Star Spangled Banner by Monica Hay. Beth Godar chaired the balloon assent, which honored those who have fought the fight and lost to cancer. Beth has received many messages from people who have found balloons in their yards and on their farms as far away as Carlinville. Following the balloon assent, the Relay began through the streets of Hardin. Beth was also responsible for designing and making the beautiful programs, which are an everlasting remembrance of the program. Linda Watt, who is the treasurer, reports that donations are continuing to come in and she expects the totals to be excellent. Linda has served on every committee of the Relay. The Relay committee sincerely thanks the survivors and the citizens of Calhoun County for their wonderful support of the Relay for Life as they work towards more birthdays and a cure.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Things to consider before downsizing your home Once their kids have left the nest, many men and women over 50 begin to consider downsizing their homes. Downsizing to a smaller home can be beneficial for a variety of reasons, including less home to clean and maintain, more affordable utility bills and lower property taxes. But the decision to downsize is rarely black and white, and men and women often struggle with that decision. Perhaps the most difficult part of the decision of whether or not to downsize to a smaller home concerns the sentimental attachment many homeowners, especially those with children, have to their homes. The home might be too big for your current needs, but it also was the same place where your son took his first steps and where your daughter lost her first tooth. Saying goodbye to a place that was home to so many memories isn't easy. But there's more than just sentimental value to consider when deciding whether or not to downsize your home after the kids have grown up and moved out. Personal finances Your financial situation merits significant consideration when deciding if the time is right to downsize your home. If your retirement nest egg is not as substantial as you would like it to be, then it would seem as though downsizing to a smaller, more affordable home is a great opportunity for you to start catching up on your retirement savings. But that's only true if your new home won't incur any additional expenses that are already taken care of in your current home. For example, your current home may be fully furnished, while a new, smaller home may require you to buy all new furniture because your existing items simply won't fit. The cost of such furnishings can be considerable. If you plan to move into a condominium, you can expect to pay monthly homeowners association fees, and such fees are often substantial. So while the condo itself might be smaller, the additional expenses associated with the property may end up making the smaller home more expensive and preventyou from saving more money for retirement. Real estate market There are seller's markets and there are buyer's markets, and ideally you

would like to sell your home in a seller's market. But keep in mind that this might be the same market in which you hope to buy a new home. The nature of the real estate market depends on a host of factors, including geography. If the city or town where you currently live is in the midst of a seller's market and you are planning on moving to a location where buyers have the upper hand, then now might be a great time to move. But if you currently live in a buyer's market and hope to move to a seller's market, then you may end up paying a steep price, even when downsizing to a smaller home. Things may even themselves out if you want to downsize to a smaller home within your current community, but do your homework nonetheless, researching the time of year when you're most likely to get the most for your home and find the best deal on your next place. The advantage men and women considering downsizing haveis that they are rarely in a rush to move out of their current home and into their next one. This gives them ample time to make the real estate market work for them. Space How much space do you really need? Once the kids have moved out, couples may feel like all of that extra space is going to waste. But that can be a knee-jerk reaction, and upon a more thorough examination of the space and your needs you may just find that you can put all of that extra square footage to good use after all. If you have always wanted your own art studio, then now might be the perfect time to make that a reality. Always wanted a room devoted to home theater? Get to work on converting your basement from an all-purpose game room to your own private movie theater. If, after considering the space in your home, you find that the extra square footage really is just upkeep you aren't especially interested in doing, then you would no doubt like a cozier home that's less of a responsibility to maintain. Downsizing a home is something many men and women over 50 consider after their children have moved out. Such a decision is rarely easy, so homeowners should take as much time as they need before making a final decision to move or stay put.
