James A. Ringhausen dies at 88 by bOb CROSSEN Calhoun News-Herald A former teacher and superintendent of the Calhoun Community Unit School District 40, American Legion adjutant and Knights of Columbus hall of fame member died July 13. James Albert Ringhausen, 88, worked in Calhoun schools from 1953 to 1990, and even after retiring continued to work with the schools, including his job as the treasurer of Calhoun CUSD 40. The Army veteran – serving 1945 to 1947 – retired from the financial position with the district in February this past year, citing his age as a reason for leaving the spot. In a Feb. 26 article in the Calhoun News-Herald, he said his greatest achievement was establishing Lewis and Clark Community College. His wife, Margaret Anne Ringhausen, said James liked keeping himself busy and highly valued hard work. His personal work ethic, she said, was something he passed on to those around him. “Work. Give 110 percent. He made his children have to work. He did and they’re better for it,” Margaret Anne Ringhausen said. “He instilled that with his grandchil-
dren, that you stick with it. You don’t give up. You just keep going.”
“I don’t know what we’re going to do without him.”
Craig Johnson American Legion member The two were inseparable throughout their 62-year marriage. James would bring Margaret Anne to all his events and meetings. Although it may have been tiresome at times, Margaret Anne said she enjoyed being as involved as he was in the community. James Ringhausen was the adjutant for the American Legion for many years, and Craig Johnson, American Legion member, said he was the backbone for the Calhoun post. James spent a lot of his time making sure members paid their dues and recruiting to fill spots for those who died, leaving empty slots to fill. Johnson said the Legion maintained around 100 percent membership while James
Ringhausen held the adjutant position. “He and Margaret Anne were always there to do everything for us,” Johnson said as he struggled to find words explaining how important James Ringhausen was to him. “He will be sorely missed by the post and I loved him like a grandfather. He was a good friend and we’ll certainly miss him.” James Ringhausen was also the face of the Legion throughout the county, even handing out awards at Calhoun High School graduation each year on behalf of the post. Johnson said he represented not only the Legion well, but also the people of the county. “I don’t know what we’re going to do without him,” Johnson said. Margaret Anne said she met James through his sister with whom she had a class in high school. School for him was a high priority, not just in learning in his younger years, but also in helping the local schools with some of the smaller things. “He was very dedicated to that,” Margaret Anne said. “He went down to the school at St. Norbert’s to help them out, and just the latter time he would go up on Mondays half (See, ringhausen, A2)
Free swim makes a splash by bOb CROSSEN Calhoun News-Herald Calhoun County residents are finding relief from some of the higher temperatures this summer with free swims at the Lions Club Pool in Hardin. Craig Johnson, pool manager, said the pool is booked every Friday through the rest of the swimming season as free swim days for local residents to cool off and entertain themselves. “They’re important to the community because it gives kids the chance to come out and swim whether they have the funding to come out and swim,” Johnson said. “It helps us get a decent crowd down there, as well.” The pool is packed on free swim days, which are sponsored by local businesses. Johnson said cutting the cost of entry to the pool brings in a lot of people who otherwise would not be able to afford regular pool visits, and boosts concession sales for the day. Around 60 people will visit the pool on a free swim day, he added, noting that is nearly double the attendance of a normal day. Getting people to the pool is also a first step in getting them to return in the future, even if that day is not a free swim day. Building up a regular customer base is important for sustaining the pool’s expenses, but more than anything, he said the days are intended to get kids off the couch. “Get them out and breathing in some oxygen. Get them out of the AC for the day,” Johnson said. One patron said the free swims are a great way to relax, especially on Fridays after a full work week. “My daughter comes out for free swim and she loves it because all of Bob Crossen/Calhoun News-Herald her friends come out and enjoy it with Kini Johnson, left, and Layla Gibson, right, enjoy a dip in the Lions Club her, as well,” Kini Johnson said. “It Pool in Hardin July 12. All the way from the Apple Kingdom to the Big Apple
by bOb CROSSEN Calhoun news-Herald More than 50 Calhoun Community High School band students, family members and friends are visiting New York City this week as part of the high school band’s annual summer trip. Cara Rojas, band teacher, said the trips are a good way for the locals to experience a style of living and culture different from that located between the Illinois and Mississippi rivers. “I’m using this as an eye-opening experience for them because a lot of them don’t leave the county or don’t leave the Jerseyville area, the Calhoun area,” Rojas said. “Also, it is a huge incentive for kids to stay in band in Calhoun.” She said this past year she had seven students in band, and next school year, she expects to have around 40 students throughout the district participating in band, which conducts fundraisers throughout the year to help pay for the trips. Although there are art shows and musicals each year in the county, Rojas said the county is limited in cultural opportunities compared to “the city that never sleeps.” She said people in the county are familiar with musicals and plays that relate to them, but have not seen performances that are popular in New York City. She said the band will not be per-
forming in New York, although some members had performed at Disney World two years ago. Taking the students to New York this summer, she said, is a feasibility test for future trips
“I’m using this as an eye-opening experience for them because a lot of them don’t leave the county or don’t leave the Jerseyville area, the Calhoun area.”
Cara Rojas Band teacher to the Big Apple. Disney World, she said, is a closed experience while New York is a massive city with fewer boundaries. “It’s a little lower key [at Disney World]. It’s an enclosed space,” Rojas said Friday before leaving on the trip. “I’m a little more nervous about New York. … I have a lot of chaperones, so we should be good to go.” The group will visit Central Park and the Metropolitan Museum of Art during its stay, in addition to Rockefeller
Center and Radio City Music Hall. She said they’ll also see “Phantom of the Opera” on Broadway, visit Grand Central Station and attempt to get on camera during The Today Show. Rojas listed a number of other landmarks in New York the group will visit and hopes its time there will teach the people about the city life and high culture. “It’s pretty much everything in a short period of time,” Rojas said. “Calhoun culturally, musically, is very limited, so they are so used to seeing things that they know…They’re just going to see a bigger array of musical themes.” The Calhoun Entertainment Company performs an annual musical, she said, and the band also hosts a performance, but the variety of performances in New York, she hopes, will open their eyes. Even the scenery is vastly different, she added. “I’m excited to see their jaws drop when we go through that tunnel in New Jersey and they see the city,” Rojas said. She said the trip is made possible through the band’s fundraising efforts throughout the year, most notably its trivia night and bake sale. Coffee cake, she said, was a major hit at the sales this year with some students selling up to $200 of the breakfast sweet. Seats for the trip are reserved first for band students, she said, but after those have filled up, friends and family of the band members are invited. C

Pub 'n Putt raises funds, awareness for lupus by bOb CROSSEN Calhoun News-Herald Calhoun residents teamed up for a fifth year to participate in the Team Kendall Pub 'n Putt July 12, throughout the county. Kendall Eilerman, formerly Klocke, was diagnosed with lupus in 2009. After the diagnosis, she said her family participated in fundraising walks that benefit foundations created to aid those with lupus. It wasn’t until a few years after the diagnosis that Kendall’s cousin, Tara Adams, suggested the family attempt its own fundraiser to raise more money for the cause. “We started that the next year and we were able to continue donating money to the walk,” Eilerman said. The event tasks local pubs and bars throughout Calhoun County to create putt putt holes for people to play. Teams – there were 66 this year – consist of four players as well as a designated driver referred to as the caddy for each team. Eilerman said putting the pubs in charge of the holes leads to some creative courses for each team to conquer. She said the event has become popular throughout the county and has raised approximately $10,000 each year it has been organized in the county. But more than anything, Eilerman said it’s raised awareness for lupus. “There are so many more people now who actually understand what lupus is,” Eilerman said. “Whenever you have it, you don’t realize how many people have no clue what it is until we do something like this. It definitely raises awareness and you meet a lot more people who have family and friends who have it as well.” Lupus is an autoimmune disease that affects each patient differently. Eilerman said the disease affects her joints and her skin in terms of sun-sensitivity, but in others it can hit their organs, which is more deadly. Some patients, she said, are
crippled by the disease, which is often referred to as a cruel mystery, Eilerman said. She said the number of people who participate in the event each year shows her how close the community is to each other, as well as its capacity to give. When somebody needs help, she said the county gathers around the person to lift them up. “Even ones who don’t play, they get to our raffle and things like that,” Eilerman said. After all the of the teams complete their course, they gather for a raffle of items donated by local business owners. Awards for best score, worst score and best dressed team are also given out, and participants also get to vote on their favorite hole from the course. Aaron Quillan, Kampsville resident, said this year was his first time participating in the event. Although he – and other putters – struggled on the hole located in Straight Home Bar and Grill, Quillan said he liked that each pub built their own part of the course. “I’ve seen it for a few years and it seemed like a good time,” Quillan said. “It brings the community together. It all ends in the county and it’s a lot of fun. … Everybody has so much fun with this thing from building the stuff to everybody being together.” As the teams migrate from pub to pub, he said they run into different people they can connect with under a common cause, which really showcases how the community unites together in times of need. All the money raised from the Pub 'n Putt is donated to the Lupus Foundation of America. In 2009, Team Kendall received an award for the largest team at the Rolla Twilight Walk, and in 2010 it received the highest collective total for the St. Louis Twilight Walk. To learn more about Team Kendall’s events, visit the group’s Facebook page. For more information about lupus or to donate toward the cause, visit lupus.org.
CEC Jamboree rocks St. Anselm Hall Saturday by bOb CROSSEN Calhoun News-Herald Tickets are still available for the Calhoun Entertainment Company Jamboree scheduled for Saturday, July 19 in Kampsville. Tickets may be reserved by contacting Sarah Kinder at 618-883-2089 until July 18. If there are tickets still available Saturday, they will be sold at the door. Tickets are $15. Jerry Sievers, Calhoun Entertainment Company director, said traditionally the jamboree would serve a full meal to each guest who attends the event, This year, however, he said the jamboree will offer only concessions. Cooking and serving food for all attendees was taxing for those who volunteered for the jamboree. “It’s a lot of work,” Sievers said, “and that’s why we did away with it.” As is the case with each jamboree, members of the entertain-
ment company script out a show to entertain those who attend. Sievers said each year hosts a slew of new jokes – many written by State’s Attorney Richard J. Ringhausen – and music performed by a live band. The format of the show will remain the same as last year's, although the content will be different, Sievers added. “There’s always a surprise,” Sievers said. “We may have a guest artist come up and help us in one thing. … It’s pretty much the same format.” The jamboree is the main fundraiser for the Calhoun Entertainment Company, and the money raised from ticket and concession sales is used to pay for rights to the musicals it performs in the spring. The next musical is undecided. Money raised from the jamboree in the past has been put toward other production improvements, including a curtain for the annual musical.

Ringhausen (Continued from A1) a day to help answer the phone and things like that.” He was on the board for the Illinois Education Association and was a member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, as well, she said. Former Unit 40 Superintendent and teacher Terry Strauch said James was his mentor. Strauch would not have pursued made the jump into the superintendent’s position without the guidance and prodding of James Ringhausen. “He was my mentor. He encouraged me to become a superintendent, so he definitely was my mentor and I just think the world of James A.,” Strauch said. “He helped a lot of beginning teachers find them a place to live. He just did anything he could to get them to come to Calhoun and be a part of the community.” James Ringhausen was important to the schools, Strauch added, but more importantly, he fostered a better and greater Calhoun community. Strauch said nearly everybody in the county would be impacted by his passing. Like Strauch, Campbell Publications President Bruce Campbell said James Ringhausen was an important figure in his life and the lives of many others. “Mr. Ringhausen was my teacher and mentor, but more importantly my lifelong friend,” Campbell said. “He touched thousands of lives because of his decades of devotion to education and serving the people of Calhoun County.” And when James took time to
himself – leaving behind the meetings for the day – Margaret Anne said he loved to mow the grass. “Mowing was his hobby,” Margaret Anne said. “He’d get on that John Deere and he’d go down to the car wash. That’s what he’d want to do when he got home. He wanted to mow.” James Ringhausen also drove the funeral coach for the Hanks Gress Funeral Home, and Phil Gress, funeral home director, said James Ringhausen will be missed at the business for all he did as well as for his friendship. “Jim was a dear friend and companion of mine, and will be dearly missed,” Gress said. “He drove the funeral coach and assisted me with funeral services at Hanks-Gress Funeral Home for over 12 years.” Although she couldn’t pinpoint her favorite memory with him – there had been many during the 62-year marriage – Margaret Anne said her most memorable instances with him were times spent with the whole family. The Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings were among her favorite moments with the family, as were the trips with their grandchildren when on vacation. She said they always had a blast with some of the family’s youngest members. “We had so much fun with them,” Margaret Anne said. “We just have good family memories. We just had a wonderful 62 years of memories.” A full obituary for James is available on page B4. His visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. July 17 at the Calhoun Elementary School gym in Hardin.
this year may be difficult when the price dips as low as it has, both Roegge and Lewis said. But, Roegge said coming off nearly five years of historic highs in the corn market, farmers should be in a position to withstand a dip in revenue. “This year’s going to be kind of a kick in the belt, and we’re not going to make as much money. But, there’s a lot of cash reserve that a lot of these guys have put in their billfolds,” Roegge said. “It’s not going to be the fallout of agriculture that you might think.” He said some farmers may choose to store their corn in hopes the prices will bounce back to the $6-$7 range. Though farmers may be looking at lower profits this year, Lewis said the most basic of economic principles are at play, starting with supply and demand. According the June crop report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more acres of corn were

(Continued from A1) for a lot of people, so whenever they do a free swim and it’s sponsored by somebody, I think that’s really nice.” Sophia Johnson said she enjoys swimming and the free swim days give her more of an opportunity to float in the pool. The pool manager said sponsoring a free swim day is a good way for a local businesses to show sup-
planted than initially anticipated, so the supply is higher. Lewis said when corn was selling for more than $7 per bushel, buyers adjusted their practices, which resulted in a decreased demand for corn. “When corn is $7 or $8 a bushel, people figure out how to get by with a little less of it,” he said. “There was a liquidation of beef herds and hog herds had problems. That’s why meat’s high at the grocery counter.” Lewis said buyers – such as feed and ethanol producers – had to absorb the blow of high corn prices over the past couple years, which impacted their bottom lines. So, the low price per bushel this year should help even the system out, he said. “It just takes a year or two for that stuff to all cycle through,” Lewis said. “With these lower prices, it may take a while, but it will help build demand back up. Demand got hammered when that price got so high.”
port for the community. He said he’s not sure how much of an impact the donation has on a business’ sales, but notes their generosity does not get overlooked by the patrons. The Calhoun News-Herald will sponsor a free swim day July 21, with additional free swims provided by the Presbyterian Church and other local businesses throughout the rest of the swimming season.

Jersey County Journal This year’s corn yield may reach historic levels, but area farmers’ profits may not indicate such. Many experts are in agreement the corn production outlook throughout the region is very promising. Mike Roegge of the University of Illinois’ Pike County Extension office said, judging by appearance and conditions, the area is set to have record harvests. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen in 30 years corn look as good over such a broad geographic range as I have this year,” Roegge said. “Corn here has been pollinating here for the last two weeks under ideal conditions.” Common problems such as moisture deficiencies on hill sides, or flooding in lowlands, are having minimal impact this year. A couple inches of rain in the coming weeks, and this year’s corn yield is all but guaranteed
to be tremendous, Roegge said. But, even with a bumper crop, farmers may be turning to their revenue insurance coverage. Dave Lewis, manager of TriCounty FS in Jerseyville, said everything about this growing season has been ideal, including the planting, emergence, field population and lack of stress on the plants. “Things have been pretty good from the production standpoint, and I think what’s happened in the markets is the traders know that, too,” Lewis said. The price of September corn, according to USDA Chicago Terminal, dropped for the tenth consecutive day to $3.75 just before noon Monday. It is the first time since the 2009/2010 marketing year corn has dropped below $4 per bushel, according to farmdoc. illinois.edu, a site maintained by U of I. For many farmers, breaking even

Deepest sympathy to the family of Mr. Jim Ringhausen. He was a wonderful man; always busy helping others, and everyone enjoyed him and his cookies. Dan Bland brought me some sweet corn and it sure was good. Maxine Barton came to Martha’s
Saturday, then Rita Sievers came and got us for the wedding of J.L Bland and Sara Simpson that was held in Brighton. Later we were guests of Pat and Janice Edler until the reception started. The reception was held at the K.C Hall in Godfrey. There was a wonder-
ful buffet dinner served. Bill and Lexi also attended the reception. Sunday George V. Bland and Leroy Bland came and got Martha and they all went to the church dinner in Kampsville, which was very good, then they enjoyed a drive in the country.

Redeye and I want to express our most sincere sympathy and love to Nan, Greg, Bruce, and Tim Ringhausen due to the death of their husband and father, James A. James A. (as Redeye called him if he wasn’t calling him Mr. Ringhausen) and Redeye worked together 20 some odd years. Jim was the boss and Redeye was the employee, but no one would ever know this by the way James A. treated Redeye. They were truly friends and had the utmost respect for each other. I, also, will miss him very much. He gave communion for me several months since I have not been able to, and he would cover for anyone who could not read or give communion on any given Saturday. He never backed down from any job or help for anyone, whether he wore a suit, casual clothes or dirty work clothes. He did not consider himself too good to do anything. He made one he@@ of a cookie, plus all the other cooking he did. All in all, he was a wonderful man and friend, and will be missed by all. I was not able to go to the funeral, but I was there in spirit. Goodbye dear friend, and enjoy yourself in heaven. Nan and boys, he
is no longer suffering and is in a better place. God Bless. All or any graduates of 1955, please contact me at 618-653-4426, millieschumann@frontier.com, or PO Box 25, Kampsville, IL 62053, if you are interested in having our 60th Class Reunion. I have enough money to pay for most of the food. Thought I would cater from Brass Door, Carrollton (we did this once before) and rent the Presbyterian Church Hall, which we have done before. I thought August 26 might work. I can’t make it on the 19th, and any earlier, will be short notice to get every one together and get food ordered. Please let me know as soon as possible. If September would be better let me know. Hope to see you soon. I thought I was going to be like an old dog losing it’s teeth, since I have what I thought was a broken tooth, but has it turned out, it is a broken cap, but Dr. Parish wouldn’t touch it until Dr. Tan (cancer doctor) gave him the ok. Am going Tuesday to get it fixed. Have been eating very carefully. Xander spent a couple days with PaPa Dennis, and conned him out of
several toys for his birthday (July 29) and Christmas. Saturday Xander and his Noma (Bev) attended Archeology Day, but the heat sent them home early. Xander came home with a beautifully painted face. Our grandson, Bub, came up Friday and spent some quality time with us, then went up to Terrill and Bev’s. Saturday evening they had pizza at Carrollton, and then Sunday, we bought carry outs at St. Francis summer dinner and ate with them. The food was delicious, as usual. The Village has to do some major repairs on the water system, which is going to cost a bundle. Therefore, I am again asking for help from those water customers who are not paying their bills. If you don’t pay, we won’t be able to buy the new parts, and the Village will be out of water. I, am telling you all, this non-payment of your water/sewer bills is getting serious. No pay - NO WATER. It’s your choice. I, for the life of me, cannot understand why if you use it, why won’t you pay for it. And how was your week??? See you next week.
■ Blessings from Belleview We would like to send a birthday shout out to Sharla Nickell who celebrates a birthday on July 20. This week we are busy with Vacation Bible School. I think I can confidently say that while you are reading this, our many exhausted volunteers are enjoying themselves and the kids as well. This Sunday, we would like to invite you to come join us for our special service at BCC, which begins at 10:30. We will be showcasing and reviewing the events of VBS and it is always a treat to see the presentation by the kids. We will provide a meal following the service. Remember, you are always welcome to join us. Remember the nursery rhyme “Mary had a Little Lamb?” There is a phrase that goes, “Everywhere that Mary went, the Lamb was sure to go.” We have added to our menagerie on Belleview Hollow Road. In addition to Lilly, who is considered my dog, and the girl’s kittens, and our ten chickens, our son has now added a puppy. He calls her Dusty and she follows him everywhere. She is named after one of his favorite Disney characters, the star hero of the movie Planes. Watching our son with his new puppy this past week has been quiet a showcase. These two have

bonded and become instant friends. We allow Dusty to stay in the fenced in area for now. She is kept on a small leash because she has a habit of crawling from beneath the fence and in recent days our small road has become a busy thoroughfare for detoured drivers who seemed overly confident that they can travel these roads at full speed. Each day as our son goes outside he would remove the leash from his collar and pick up his newfound friend and hug her. “Good morning Dusty,” he would say. Little Dusty would wag her tail excitedly and lick his face. Placing Dusty on the ground, our three year old would trot over to the castle; a little climbing play area in our yard and Dusty would waddle behind. Everywhere he goes, she goes, two friends bonding early in life. Dusty’s leash is a bit longer that I would have liked. Anyone who has had a dog on a leash understands the frustration of having to untangle leashes from around stationary objects. That is a daily struggle in our household especially with the toys in our yard. Our son has now stepped up to the task. One day, I sat on the porch and watched him untangle Dusty. For me, I simply unhook the leash and then pick her up and pull the leash
free while I am holding her. My son does it differently. Walking to Dusty with his normal morning routine, he would have her follow him around the toys and objects in which she is tangled. Sure enough, Dusty would follow him and he would lead her until she was untangled and free. He squats down, pats her on the head and she would look at him and wag her tail. Isn’t it nice to have someone that we can depend on to help us become untangle us from the affairs of life? I must confess something to you dear reader. Life is not exactly a cakewalk for this family on Belleview Hollow Road. We have faced our struggles and our difficulties. There have been days when we have been left in tears because nothing seems to go right for us. We have even had days when we feel like everything and everyone is against us. When those moments come, we just look to the One we are following. Sometimes it can be the listening ear of a friend. A shoulder of a loved one. The tender embrace of our significant other. If you ever find yourself tangled, find the one person you can depend on. “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27)

Recently, an Illinois resident received a letter titled “Medicare Information Update” that asked for his and his spouse’s date of birth and phone number. The letter stated, “As of January 1st, Medicare has made changes that affect you and your health care expenses…meaning that you must pay even more towards your own health care. The recipient of this letter did not respond because he knew that Medicare already has his information and does not contact beneficiaries in this way. This letter is a type of marketing tool; known as a lead generator, which collects people’s names, phone numbers, and other information for a salesperson to follow up
on. These lead generators often contain a notice in smaller print that this is not affiliated with any government agency or Medicare. This letter also had small print that said a representative may call. If you choose to return these cards, you will likely receive calls trying to sell you something. Usually a Medicare Supplement Insurance. Advisory: Illinois Conservation Police ask Starved Rock visitors to observe trail closure signs Illinois Conservation Police Officers issued 23 citations to hikers violating restricted areas of Starved Rock State Park over the Fourth of July weekend. Some areas of the park remain closed due to dangerous conditions caused by storms that hit the area a week ago. Hanging limbs and damaged trees could still fall and cause injury. Crews are working as fast as possible to clear downed trees and other debris. Posts and signs have been installed to alert hikers to closed trails. “Help our site staff and Conservation Police Officers keep hikers and other park visitors safe by observing signs and other warnings,” said Rafael Gutierrez, Chief of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police. “Officers will enforce closures and issue citations to people entering areas that are off-limits. Give our
cleanup crews time to do their jobs.” Strong straight-line winds swept across northern Illinois on July 1, causing widespread damage. The main trail system within the park remains closed. The Visitor Center and Lodge are open during normal business hours. The trail to Starved Rock remains open as do the Illinois, Ottawa and Kaskaskia Canyon trails at the east end of the park. Trails at nearby Matthiessen State Park are open. Starved Rock is the state’s most visited state park with about two million visits annually. For more information, visit: http://dnr.state. il.us/lands/landmgt/parks/i&m/east/ starve/park.htm For up-to-date information on closures at other IDNR sites, visit: http://www.dnr.illinois.gov/closures/Pages/default.aspx

Sectarian Violence and True Religion The history of organized religion is filled with what can only be described as sectarian or partisan violence. There have been disagreements from the beginning of Christianity over what should constitute the correct form of both practice and belief. And these disagreements are only natural: when finite, fallible human beings try to determine what their infinite, infallible God expects of them, there is going to be disagreement. But, wise men and women should realize this and not let these disagreements turn to armed conflict and bloodshed. Sadly, this sort of religious violence has been all too common. Catholics and Protestants waged a series of wars for much of the 16th and 17th century. Shia and Sunni Muslims have waged war against each other for centuries, and of course there seems to be no end in sight to the violence which Muslims and Jews perpetrate against each other in the Mid-East. This is most unfortunate, since we all claim to believe in a loving and merciful God who abhors violence and the spilling of innocent blood. We should pray for peace among all of God's children and do what we can in our lives to foster a spirit of religious unity.
For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body, whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free, and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.
1 Corinthians 12:13
- Christopher Simon

How to cut your commuting costs TRI-COUNTY REAL ESTATE TOUR A daily commute can be physically stressful, but many people find their daily trek to work financially taxing as well. Commuting costs have risen considerably over the last decadeplus, as higher fuel costs have eaten into many household budgets. But commuters accustomed to grinning and bearing it with regard to their daily grind might be surprised to learn that there are some ways they can cut their commuting costs and possibly even reduce some of the physical stress stemming from their daily odysseys to and from the office. The following are a handful of ways to trim the costs of your daily commute. n Establish a ridesharing program at your office. Research from the Center for Transportation at the Washington Policy Center in Seattle has shown that carpooling to work can be as much as 61 percent cheaper than driving alone. Many highways feature commuter lanes that are exclusive to vehicles with two or more passengers. Veteran commuters know that such lanes tend to be the least congested lanes on the highway, so taking advantage of the commuter lane by sharing rides with one or more coworkers can save time as well as money. The benefits of ridesharing are numerous, and include saving money on fuel (sharing driving duties with just a single coworker immediately cuts your commuter fuel costs in half); extends the life of your vehicle by reducing daily wear and tear; and also allows you one or two days a week to unwind during your commute while someone else takes the wheel. n Ride a bike. Admittedly, men and women who aren't entirely healthy or those who live especially far away from the office or in regions where the weather is often unpleasant may not be able to turn their bicycles into tools for cutting the costs associated

with their commutes. But riding a bicycle to the office each day will cut your commute-related fuel costs by 100 percent while also providing a boost to your cardiovascular system. Regular cardiovascular exercise has been shown to reduce risk a person's for various conditions, including heart disease, while also reducing stress. Even riding a bike to the office twice a week can cut your commute-related fuel costs by 40 percent, so if cycling to work is a realistic possibility for you, give it a try. n Propose the idea of telecommuting to your employer. Many employers have grown more lax with regard to employees working from home. Some employers recognize that less
strict telecommuting policies make for happier and more loyal employees, who can drastically reduce their childcare costs in addition to commuting costs by working from home. In addition, employers can benefit by moving into smaller offices with more affordable rents. Telecommuting one or two days a week can save you a substantial amount of money, so propose the idea to your employer, even suggesting a trial period to see if it's a viable option before either side makes a full commitment. n Change your hours. Technology has made it easier than ever before for companies to abandon the typical 9-to-5 workday. Employees can now connect to company networks
via external server connections at any time of day and even contact one another via email applications on their smartphones regardless of the time of day. Flex time, in which employees are allowed to work flexible schedules so long as their work is getting done, enables employees to commute to and from the office during off-peak hours when roads are less congested than they are during rush hour. This saves you the time you spend sitting in rush hour traffic while also cutting back on fuel consumption that only increases the more your car sits idling in traffic. Commuting costs are on the rise, but there are numerous creative ways for working men and women to cut these costs.

Great summer road trip activities for kids (StatePoint) While the saying “getting there is half the fun” is a great concept in theory, in practice, a road trip can be quite stressful on families. But with a bit of smart packing and preparation, you can make your long summer road trips and shorter commutes more entertaining for kids. This summer, be sure to stock your car with some great activities and books. Science Fun Science and fun can go handin-hand, especially in the car. Try the middle-grade adventure series “Nick and Tesla,” which follows the adventures of two tween siblings who use their inventions to solve mysteries. The series is coauthored by “Science Bob” Pflugfelder, an award-winning elementary school science teacher and regular guest on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” and Steven Hockensmith, a former journalist. Their latest book, “Nick and Tesla’s Secret Agent Gadget Battle,” features a riveting mystery plot as well as easy-to-follow instructions and diagrams to recreate the devices the characters use to solve their conundrums. With this action-packed book in your arsenal, kids won’t even realize when you’re stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic! Information about the series can be found at www.NickandTesla.com. A novel Idea

There is no better way to kill time than with one of the oldest forms of entertainment -- a novel. Teens can check out “Hollow City,” the sequel to the 2011 best seller, “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.” A mix of fantasy and vintage photography, this book aims to mesmerize young readers into a state of perpetual road trip complacency. For more information, visit www.quirkbooks.com/hollowcity. Fun and games Take Tic Tac Toe to the next level with “Tic Tac Tome.” No apps, batteries or touch screens are required to enjoy this addictive “book that will beat you in tic-tac-toe.” Created by Willy Yonkers, the lead industrial designer at ThinkGeek, Inc., it features more than 1400 pages, hundreds of draws and losses, and only one way for a reader to win each game. Take this one along for a guaranteed distraction from the boredom of endless highway. Visit www.quirkbooks. com/book/tic-tac-tome to learn more. When it comes to road tripping, don’t leave home without a comprehensive toolkit.
