Commissioners wrestle with insurance rates By Bob Crossen Calhoun News-Herald The Calhoun County Commissioners took no action regarding a switch to a different insurance program, but rather requested insurance representatives present information to county employees before making a choice. Renewing with the its current provider, United Health Care, would lead to a rate increase of approximately 32 percent for the county while a switch to Coventry would remain around the same cost paid now.

“If we can’t get the number, we have to do something quickly, so that people have an opportunity and a chance to start looking at the exchanges.”

Doug Wilschetz Commissioner Chairman During the last regular board meeting June 16, the commissioners requested responses from employees on the plan offerings, including the option of the county opting out of offering insurance. County Clerk Rita Hagen said there were 14 responses from county employees on the matter who said they would prefer the Coventry plan. However, the switch to Coventry requires at least 50 percent of the county’s full-time equivalent employees – or 22 employees – opt in to the plan, and the county is short of reaching that number. Commissioner Chairman Doug Wilschetz said he worries the county will not be able to rally the numbers necessary to get employees into the Coventry plan to save the county money. An alternative, he said, would be to stop offering insurance in favor of employees seeking their own insurance on the marketplace. “If we can’t get the number, we have to do something quickly, so that people have an opportunity and a chance to start looking at the exchanges,” Wilschetz said. “If the employees don’t want it, and we don’t meet the numbers, we’re just out of the insurance business.” Under the Affordable Care Act, also known

as Obamacare, companies with fewer than 50 employees may choose not to offer insurance to employees, but instead let the employees seek insurance individually. Wilschetz said the county would have to keep a tight watch on its number of county employees to ensure it would not exceed the 50-employee threshold. If it were to reach that threshold and the county did not offer insurance, the county would be subject to a penalty per employee. Wilschetz said he is in favor of offering insurance if the county can afford to do so reasonably, but said the best alternative would be to end that offering if not enough employees choose to go with the plan. Additionally, the commissioners took no action regarding emergency appropriations of the county sheriff’s budget. Lines for the coroner and jail are in the red, over both of which the sheriff has little control. The lines may continue to fall, most notably the jail line which is already $11,000 in the negative, as the sheriff continues to keep criminals and suspects behind bars. The more people who are caught and brought to jail, the more the jail budget line falls as expenses are paid. Because there are surpluses in other funds, the negative line balances can still be brought into line within the sheriff’s budget with emergency line transfers. However, Wilschetz relayed the concerns of State’s Attorney Richard J. Ringhausen who believes the commissioners should exercise caution in emergency appropriations for fear that the money transferred may need to be used for its original appropriation. “Say you take it from fuel to pay for radar. If we get closer to the end of the year and we run into an emergency then with fuel … it’s not eligible for emergency appropriations because you moved money out of there to pay for something,” Wilschetz said. The chairman said another alternative to paying the bills during this fiscal year would be to pay them at the beginning of next year’s budget. The equipment line is also in the negative. Earlier this year, that line was split to pay for new sheriff’s department vehicles with a grant while the rest was to be used for other equipment purchases. In 2012, the commissioners deferred sheriff’s payroll from Aug. 22 to Sept. 1 to overcome shortfalls throughout the county sheriff budget. (See, insurance, A2)

Steady climb for river levels By Bob Crossen Calhoun News-Herald Water level predictions continued to rise since last week when projected water levels threatened the closure of ferries on both the Illinois and Mississippi rivers. The prediction from the National Weather Service indicates flood levels could reach the major flood stage, which begins at 32 feet. The projection peaks late July 10, and as of July 6 at 9 a.m., the level was measured at 29.47 feet. It is not until 31.8 feet that the Brussels Ferry service is interrupted, and the ferry was closed

July 7. According to a post from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office on Facebook, approximately six inches of water covered the road to the ferry. At 32 feet, Water Street in Hardin begins to flood. At 32.29 feet the sales office at Hurley Dodge takes on water. The Golden Eagle Ferry closed July 3 and the Winfield Ferry closed July 6 due to flooding. The ferries will reopen when the river falls to its normal levels. To keep updated on ferry closures, visit gettingaroundillinois. com and check the Calhoun Ferry Company Facebook page.

Phone scam hits Hardin numbers By Bob Crossen Calhoun News-Herald Calhoun County phone numbers have been a pawn in a new phone scam seeking credit card information. Traci Hillen said she was unaware her number was being used for the scam that requests credit card information to reduce the rate on the card. When the scammers make calls, local phone numbers appear on the recipients' caller ID. “They were using my phone number,” Hillen said. “I was completely thrown for a loop because I had a message on my answering machine from someone in Hardin saying, ‘We’re on a no-call list. Stop calling me.’” The people who would be victimized by the crime see the name of Hillen – or another Calhoun resident – on the caller ID, which gets them to pick up the phone. Once on the

line, the caller, which Hillen said may be automated, asks for credit

for the scam, noting when people call the number back, the call is routed to the number being used as the set-up. “I was worried people were going to call and report me,” Hillen said when she realized her number had been used. She posted a message on Facebook to alert her friends and family about the potential calls. Hillen said others have started to catch onto the scheme with the spread of information, and wants to ensure nobody falls for the scam. She said she reached out to her telephone company, Frontier, which she said was aware of the problem. A call made to Frontier was not returned by press time. By Bob Crossen Calhoun News-Herald Spaces are still available for those interested in being contestants for the Calhoun County Fair Pageant. The deadline to turn in paperwork for the pageant is July 31, and Glenda Sidwell, fair pageant coordinator, said she has only one little miss signed up for the pageant. There can be no more than 20 contestants, she said, and is seeking between four and six queen contestants. “We just need some girls to run,” Sidwell said. “I have no [senior miss] ones at this point.” The competition isn’t all focused on beauty, however, as the contestants will also have a formal interview as part of the competition and must perform a one-minute speech in front of the live audience at the fair grounds. Sidwell said those portions of the competition are important in promoting growth in the contestant’s character. Shy contestants, she said, come out of their shell to compete, while others learn the importance of a good interview. “I’ve just seen a lot of positives come out of it,” Sidwell said. “They get to meet different people. They get to learn what it is all about when they walk into an interview for future use, whether they

win or not. It gives them a feel for what that’s like.” She said the official competition starts off with the interview before the contestants give a one-minute speech and visit the stage in swimsuits and formal wear. Sidwell said the speech can be conducted on any topic of interest to the contestant. And although only the crowned queens go on to the state competition in January, Sidwell said she fosters a culture in which they all feel like winners. And for those who do move on, Sidwell said previous contestants have landed in the top 12 of the state. “To me, it’s just a good experience. We try to make it a lot of fun for them,” Sidwell said. “They’re all winners for even getting up there and doing it.” She said the contestants can even win awards for their speech and interview skills from the state competition to showcase their abilities. Those interested in entering the competition can call Sidwell at 618-5769014 to relay their information. Sidwell said she will send the contestants a packet of information about the event. The contestants also have weekly practices leading up to the pageant. The practices last approximately two hours. The Calhoun County Fair runs Sept. 4-7.

Jerseyville clinic hires new vet By bob crossen Calhoun News-Herald Clients and their pets visiting Jersey Calhoun Veterinary Hospital will see a new face at the Jerseyville clinic. Jenna Magnuson, who graduated from University of Illinois in May, always wanted to be a vet. She said the desire began as young as 4 years old, and has propelled her to this position in her career. “This is something that I’ve always wanted to do,” Magnuson said. “Growing up, I was always going with my parents to our veterinary visits with our own pets at home.” Magnuson said one of her strongest assets on the job is explaining the medical jargon for the clients who bring in their pets. Simplifying diagnoses for those without degrees to understand is important in gaining trust with the client and garnering their respect, as well. Although this is her first official job as a veterinarian, she is no stranger to the back rooms of a veterinary clinic. The Washingon, Ill., native said she worked at the Four Paws Animal Clinic during high school where Dr. Heather McTaggart took Magnuson under her wing. Magnuson said McTaggart has been a strong mentor for her and even brought her into surgery rooms when she was in high school to give her a closer look at the work that is done and how it is conducted. She said that experience was important in preparing her for collegiate coursework. “I was assisting the vet on surgeries and appointments and things like that,” Magnuson said. “As I

Calhoun News-Herald Rodney Davis has been no stranger to the area since being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012. Davis, R-Taylorville, said consistently touring the area helps keep him touch with his constituents in Illinois’ 13th district. He said he comes back to Illinois every single weekend. “I want to spend time in the district that gives me the opportunity to serve in Washington,” he said. “That means, when I’m home, traveling around the district and meeting with different groups…just so I understand if there’s a policy that needs to be changed in Washington. The best way to find that out is to actually be here and talk to people.” He said representing a district that spans to Bloomington in the north and portions of Madison County in the south, he hears a wide variety of local concerns, depending on the group he’s meeting with. “But you deal with flooding issues on a regular basis, you deal with FEMA issues on a regular basis,” he said. “So, those tend to be a little more prevalent here in this area than in other parts of my

went through school, and got more experience as far as my education goes, [McTaggart] mentored me and allowed me to gain extra experience to be more prepared than some of my classmates.” McTaggart was able to prod Magnuson forward and keep her on site of her goal to be a veterinarian while also providing some critical hands-on experience. Magnuson said she would be in surgery rooms for class work, but the room would be cluttered with other staff members and students. “We’re there to learn. We don’t get to do a lot of hands-on stuff,” Magnuson said. “Whereas [McTaggart] kind of let met do a little bit more with her, under her

district.” Davis was in the area in the middle of last week, meeting with Grafton Mayor Tom Thompson to talk about forecasted rising river levels. “I just want to be there to let them know that if this gets to the point where the federal government needs to assist Grafton or Jersey County that we’re going to be an advocate,” the congressman said. A few topics – the economy and dysfunction in Washington – come up everywhere he goes. “What frustrates me a lot is that policies that need to be set can save taxpayers billions,” Davis said. “But, people don’t want to talk about how policies save money, they just want to talk about how increasing revenue is the only solution. That’s just not true.” After being elected by just more than 1,000 votes, Davis admits there’s an element of constant campaigning to his regular visits. “I won the closest Republican victory in the nation,” Davis said. “This district was drawn by Pat Quinn, Mike Madigan and John Cullerton. The Democrats drew it with nine universities and colleges with residence halls in this district.

She said she didn’t have a desired city in which to work but loved the area surrounding St. Louis, and her job search led her to Jerseyville. “When I interviewed, I fell in love with the clinic,” Magnuson said. “They have a wide range of diagnostic capabilities and the good client contact and good relationships with the client.” The veterinarian, who special-

They thought they would be able to elect a Democrat last time, and we beat the trend.” Since winning his seat in the 2012 general election, Davis’s seat in the House has been targeted by Democrats, and even other Republicans. He won the Republican nomination earlier this year – beating out former Miss America Erika Harold – and will face Democrat Ann Callis in November. “When you win the closest Republican victory in the nation, you don’t get a pass the next time. I haven’t had any honeymooning from campaigning at all. That’s OK, because I went to Washington to govern,” the congressman said. “I want people to judge me on my record of service back home. Being here in Jersey County, Greene County and Calhoun County on a regular basis helps me to do my job.” He said not all local issues can be taken up at the federal level. But, he said there are plenty of things done in Washington that can have an impact in rural Illinois. Davis points to the passage of the Farm Bill, which saved $23 billion, as the most significant piece of legislation he’s been part of putting

through. “That’s huge. That’s the largest single spending cut we’ve had this entire Congress,” Davis said. “Regardless of the criticism you take on both sides, we’re moving the ball forward on reducing spending in Washington.” The Water Bill, which was recently approved by both the House and Senate, is another example of progress in Washington during his time. Davis sat on the transportation and infrastructure committee, which drafted the legislation. The $12.3 billion bill dedicates resources to, among other things, improve waterways. “That’s going to have a very positive impact for decades to come when it comes to getting our products down the river, that you guys know so well,” Davis said. “Eighty percent of the product is coal and grains, and that’s my district.” Though he admits it's not a boon to taxpayers, Davis is proud to have introduced the legislation which named the Interstate 70 bridge over the Mississippi River the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge. In doing so, he said he became the first freshman in the House to have a bill signed into law.

The Human Touch Spencer Michael Free ‘Tis the human touch in this world that counts, The touch of your hand and mine, Which means far more to the fainting heart Than shelter and bread and wine, For shelter is gone when the night is over And bread lasts only a day, But the touch of the hand and the sound of the voice Sing on in the soul always.

CORRESPONDENCE

All grads of 1954 please let me know either by phone 618-653-4426, mail, PO Box 25, Kampsville, IL 62053, or E-mail, millieschumann@frontier. com, if you are interested in celebrating our 60 year class reunion. As most of you probably know, Wanda Tepen, our class reunion getter together, has passed away. Thought we might rent the Presbyterian Church Hall, and have food catered by Brass Door, Carrollton. We had them cater before and have used Presbyterian Hall before, and both were great. I have enough in Class of 1954 savings to pay for most, if not all, food; therefore, no money will have to be sent in advance. I thought maybe have it in August, but not the 16th, all though it would be awesome, it is my birthday, but our annual Kampsville fireworks are that day. Please let me know, so that I can rent the hall and order the food. I really think we should have this reunion - we are getting older and we have lost several of our classmates already. Frankly, I certainly intend to be here long enough for another reunion, but, I have liver cancer, and although I am doing well now, there is nothing set in stone how long I have, and I would love to see all of you, if possible. I’ll be waiting with

bated breath. There has been a rash of breakins or just plain robberies the past few weeks in Kampsville. If, anyone knows who is doing this, please contact the Sheriff’s Department or inform Mayor Schumann, at the Village Hall or home. Perhaps if those who are stealing, should get a job. People work hard for their belongings, and should not have to worry if they are going to be robbed. One house had a laptop on their table, and were not home. Got to meet our new great granddaughter, Lydia Mae Kamm, daugher of Chad and Mary. Cute as a button and sweet as candy. We, along with Bev, Xander, Mary, Lydia, Mark, Robin, Jason, Mary, Paul and Betty all enjoyed a delicious supper with Mike, Becky and John Thursday. Bev and Xander spent the night. Redeye and I journeyed to Golden Correll Friday for lunch, and then hit Walmart, where we promptly forgot half dozen things. Oh well, there is always another time. I, of course, spent Saturday and half of Sunday in bed after all the fun time. Sunday afternoon we dropped by Deener’s to see how he is doing. He is still weak, but is doing much better.

Myra and daughter (sorry, chemo brain kicked in and I can’t remember her name), are staying with him for a few days. Rita had stayed with him over the weekend, and Roberta has been helping when not working. He has great helpers, and he appreciates them very much. The electricity went off and on several times Sunday morning, and the tv in our room refused to come back on. I spent over and hour on the phone with a nice young man trying to get the TV going - no luck, so Thursday someone is going to come and fix it - $125 house call. Fun fun fun. At least I have my I-pad, thanks to Clark, so I can play solitaire. Devin and Redeye got the flags up all over Kampsville Thursday for July 4th. Devin is so tall that he just stands in the bucket on the backhoe and puts flags in holders on poles through town. I, also, had bought a long bunting, but it was too long for the house, so the fellas put it across front of the stage. I know one thing - next year I am not going to buy seven plants for our yard. Those puppies have to be watered, without fail, every day or we have brown leaves and no flowers. I love flowers, but my days caring for them daily, are over. Next year three pots of nothing but flowers. Sympathy to Wayne Sibley’s family. And how was your week???? See you next week.

Please join us for this wonderful opportunity. “Possibilities in Impossibilities.” That continues to be our theme this summer at Belleview Community Church. In the early 90’s as a high school graduate, I was enjoying a sense of freedom though I still lived at home. I was busy working a job on a local hog farm, owning my own car, playing softball in two different leagues and simply doing the things I enjoyed doing. One night a week, we had family movie night. Even as a 20 year old, I enjoyed those family movie nights, but this one was different. My mother forced me to watch a sermon of a man who I had difficulty understanding at first. It was a sermon that eventually had a tremendous impact on my life. Through this sermon, came the decision to accept the call to preach even when others said that it was unlikely I would be able to do that well because of my hearing disability. The speaker had cerebral palsy and he posed this question “What is your problem?” I thought to myself, “Well

I have a hearing disability.” Speaking with such passion, the premise of the speaker’s question was basically saying that there is no excuse. Here I am 20 years later, preaching. Doing something I convinced myself that I was not able to do simply because others were the one who said it. I have a picture on my Facebook page also stored on my phone. The picture is of me standing with that speaker that I heard on video over 20 years ago. One whose words still impact me this day to remind me that I have no excuses. It was taken just a little over a week ago. He came to Belleview. It was an honor to have him. His name is David Ring. He has cerebral palsy. He is doing and has done what others have said he will never do or could not do. Yes, he has cerebral palsy but to him, it is not an excuse. For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, (I Corinthians 1:26,27)

Deadline approaching for certifying farmers' planted acreage By Carmen Ensinger Calhoun News-Herald The United States Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency in Carrollton is reminding Greene County farmers that July 15 is the last day to certify their planted acreage. “The deadline is coming up real soon,” County Executive Director Becky Walls said. “They have to certify what they have planted in each field for the different programs and a lot of times their crop insurance will want to see the report we do.” Crop progress in the area is looking very positive from an observation standpoint. “The crops look very good at the moment except for the places where the creek bottoms and the river is coming up,” Walls said. “Most of the corn crop is pretty well tassled and the bean crop is coming right along, too.” Walls said while corn was planted earlier this year than last year, they are not expecting a significantly earlier harvest. “I would say the harvest is going to be pretty normal,” she said. “It shouldn’t be as late as it was in 2011, which was pretty late because farmers couldn’t get in the field until June. It might be a couple weeks early, but I’m not an agronomist.”

Hyperthermia: Too hot for your health NIH provides advice on heat-related illness for older adults During the summer, it is important for everyone, especially older adults and people with chronic medical conditions, to be aware of the dangers of hyperthermia. The National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the NIH, has some tips to help mitigate some of the dangers. Hyperthermia is an abnormally high body temperature caused by a failure of the heat-regulating mechanisms in the body to deal with the heat coming from the environment. Heat stroke, heat syncope (sudden dizziness after prolonged exposure to the heat), heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat fatigue are common forms of hyperthermia. People can be at increased risk for these conditions, depending on the combination of outside temperature, their general health and individual lifestyle. Older people, particularly those with chronic medical conditions, should stay indoors, preferably with air conditioning or at least a fan and air circulation, on hot and humid days, especially when an air pollution alert is in effect. Living in housing without air conditioning, not drinking enough fluids, not understanding how to respond to the weather conditions, lack of mobility and access to transportation, overdressing and visiting overcrowded places are all lifestyle factors that can increase the risk for hyperthermia. People without air conditioners should go to places that do have air conditioning, such as senior centers, shopping malls, movie theaters and libraries. Cooling centers, which may be set up by local public health agencies, religious groups and social service organizations in many communities, are another option. The risk for hyperthermia may increase from: ·Age-related changes to the skin such as poor blood circulation and inefficient sweat glands Alcohol use Being substantially overweight or underweight Dehydration Heart, lung and kidney diseases, as

well as any illness that causes general weakness or fever High blood pressure or other health conditions that require changes in diet. For example, people on saltrestricted diets may be at increased risk. However, salt pills should not be used without first consulting a physician. Reduced perspiration, caused by medications such as diuretics, sedatives, tranquilizers and certain heart and blood pressure drugs Use of multiple medications. It is important, however, to continue to take prescribed medication and discuss possible problems with a physician. Heat stroke is a life-threatening form of hyperthermia. It occurs when the body is overwhelmed by heat and is unable to control its temperature. Heat stroke occurs when someone’s body temperature increases significantly (above 104 degrees Fahrenheit) and shows symptoms of the following: strong rapid pulse, lack of sweating, dry flushed skin, mental status changes (like combativeness or confusion), staggering, faintness or coma. Seek immediate emergency medical attention for a person with any of these symptoms, especially an older adult. If you suspect someone is suffering from a heat-related illness: Get the person out of the heat and into a shady, air-conditioned or other cool place. Urge the person to lie down. If you suspect heat stroke, call 911. Apply a cold, wet cloth to the wrists, neck, armpits and/or groin.

These are places where blood passes close to the surface of the skin, and the cold cloths can help cool the blood. Help the individual to bathe or sponge off with cool water. If the person can swallow safely, offer fluids such as water or fruit and vegetable juices, but avoid alcohol and caffeine. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) within the Administration for Children and Families in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services helps eligible households pay for home cooling and heating costs. People interested in applying for assistance should contact their local or state LIHEAP agency or go to http://www. acf.hhs.gov/programs/ocs/liheap. The NIA leads the federal effort supporting and conducting research on aging and the medical, social, and behavioral issues of older people. The Institute’s broad scientific program seeks to understand the nature of aging and to extend the healthy, active years of life. For more information on research, health and aging, go to www.nia.nih.gov.

North American duck populations strong, wetland pond conditions good Duck populations have increased in overall abundance over last year, and their habitat conditions have improved, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Trends in Duck Breeding Populations 2014 report released July 2. These conclusions are based on the 2014 Waterfowl Breeding Population and Habitat Survey conducted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Canadian Wildlife Service. The annual duck survey encompasses more than 2 million square miles of waterfowl habitat across Alaska, north-central and northeastern U.S. states, and south-central, eastern and northern Canada. The preliminary estimate for the total duck population is 49.2 million birds, an 8 percent increase over last year’s estimate of 45.6 million birds, and 43 percent above the long-term average. The report also provides abundance estimates for individual duck species, including mallard, blue-winged teal, northern pintail, American wigeon, lesser and greater scaup, and canvasback, all of which are similar to or slightly above last year’s totals. Most species’ populations, such as mallard and blue-winged teal, remain significantly above the long-term average, while others, including scaup and pintail are still below.

had below to well below average winter temperatures and average precipitation. Southern Manitoba benefitted from last year’s higher summer and fall precipitation, whereas southern Saskatchewan and most of Alberta were aided by higher spring 2014 precipitation. In the U.S. prairies, habitat conditions improved in the western Dakotas and Montana from 2013, but remained similar in the eastern Dakotas. The annual Waterfowl Breeding Population and Habitat Survey guides the Service’s waterfowl conservation programs under authority of the 1918 Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Waterfowl population surveys and monitoring programs are critical components of successful waterfowl management, and a reflection of the Service’s commitment to generating high quality scientific data to inform conservation planning. The northern pintail estimate of 3.2 million was similar to last year’s estimate of 3.3 million, and remains 20 percent below the long-term average. American wigeon were 18 percent above the 2013 estimate and 20 percent above the long-term average. Kampsville Lock and Dam is the subject of the quarterly meeting of the Calhoun County Historical Society to be held July 15 at Kampsville Landing Restaurant in the north part of Kampsville, not to be confused with the Kampsville Inn on the riverfront. The speaker for the evening will be Jason L. King, Director of Research for the Center of American Archeology at Kampsville. King will give a presentation on the history of the Kampsville Lock and Dam and plans to preserve the remaining concrete locks as a historic point of interest. Few people are aware that it ever existed. It was completed in September 1893 and was removed in 1938 after the Alton Lock and Dam was in full operation. The evening meal will be family style pork chop dinner with

side dishes, and drink, for $7.99 plus tax per person. This is a change from the published Society newsletter, which listed the meal plan of a pasta buffet. The dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. and you may order from the menu if so desired. Following the dinner there will be a short business meeting at approximately 7 p.m. and the speaker presentation about 7:30 p.m. If you have any questions about the status of the Illinois River potential flood levels, or to make reservations for dinner please contact one of the following persons; Emerson Retzer at 618-653-4285 or 618-535-4945, Marietta Nolte at 618-883-2126, or Tina Pluester at 618-576-2660. This assists the restaurant to plan staffing. As always, the public is invited and encouraged to attend.

Meppen Picnic approaching St. Joseph’s Church, Meppen, invites the public to join the fun and excitement of the annual church picnic. The picnic will be held Saturday, Aug. 2 and Sunday, Aug. 3. Saturday evening the dining hall will start serving at 5 p.m. The menu will include delicious turtle soup, beef sandwiches, and barbecue chicken sandwiches. Concessions will also have hot fish sandwiches, pronto pups, funnel cakes and ice cream. Sunday, a chicken and dumplings and beef dinner will be served family style, starting at 11 a.m. Plate lunches will be served Sunday evening starting at 5 p.m.

For entertainment there will be music by “Velvet Hammer,” and games for young and old, including bingo. The bingo will feature three big cash games along with other cash games. On Saturday, between 9 -10 p.m. there will be a $50 game. On Sunday, between 5 – 6 p.m. there will be a $100 game and then between 8 - 8:30 p.m. there will be another $100 game. A grand raffle featuring a handmade quilt, Bradley Original Smoker, a birdhouse pail fountain, and many other items and cash prizes will also be held. The drawing will be Sunday at 8:30 p.m. So come out and enjoy the fun.

If there is any sin which religious people are particularly prone to, it is perhaps the sin of religious pride, and especially the sin of thinking that we are somehow holier than the mass of humanity. Religious people who teach, preach or write about these subjects are probably more at risk for this than the average person, since they are in some ways called upon to exhort others to act and believe piously. There are lots of dangers of being on this moral and religious high horse, not the least of which is that we have farther to fall the higher the horse. Indeed, Jesus reserved his most scathing criticisms for those high-minded teachers and Pharisees who seemed to relish the prospect of casting stones at sinners. The woes enumerated in the 23rd chapter of Matthew's gospel and the 11th chapter of Luke's are directed at various forms of religious sins, and we would do well to study these chapters and honestly ask ourselves which of these high horses we might be riding on, perhaps without realizing it.

The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.

Matthew 23:2-3 NIV

Steps involved with estate planning Although inevitable, death is an emotional subject that's difficult to discuss. While estate planning can make people uncomfortable, it is an essential part of securing assets for future generations and can make a death in the family easier for loved ones to handle. Estate planning is an umbrella term that refers to a host of things that must be done prior to a person's death, including writing a will and even making funeral arrangements. Estate planning attempts to eliminate financial uncertainties and maximize the value of an estate, and allows men and women to state their wishes with regard to long-term healthcare and guardianship for their children. When done right, estate planning can prevent family feuds and ensure that the deceased's estate stays in the hands of family rather than being relegated to the government. Estate planning can be a complex process, so men and women should seek help to ensure the process goes smoothly. Getting started Estate planning should begin early in a person's life, especially for young parents. It's easy to talk about saving for a home or retirement, but it's not so simple to discuss who will care for your children should you die while they are still minors. Those who are not able to sort through these answers on their own should enlist the help of an attorney or a financial adviser,

both of whom can take some of the emotion out of the discussion and put it in more practical terms. The will A will is an important component of estate planning. Without clearly and legally spelling out your wishes, there is no guarantee that those wishes will be honored. It will be up to a state or province to make potentially lifealtering decisions that can impact your surviving family members, and the only way to ensure your wishes will be carried out is to put them into a will. Although men and women can write their own wills, many people prefer to seek the assistance of an attorney, who can make sure all necessary details are included in the will. Medical directives In addition to a will, estate planning includes your wishes if you become incapacitated or suffer from a serious medical condition that precludes you from making decisions about your care and finances. Spouses can be named to make important health decisions, but you may want to indicate other information, such as life support measures or organ donation, as well. If you have strong opinions on treatment, medical directives and living wills are a necessity. Estate planning is a process that is difficult to discuss, but one that is essential to maximize your assets and ensure your end-of-life wishes are honored.
