School board denies filming on school property by bOb CROSSEN Calhoun News-Herald School board members voted against allowing the filming of parts of Discovery Channel’s "Billy Bob’s Gags to Riches" on school property Monday during Unit 40’s regular board meeting. Superintendent Kate Sievers said the board was concerned about the privacy of the students and how the district may be portrayed when the final edits are completed. She said the show will receive national attention and would not like the students to be shown to the world so openly, even if they were to consent to a waiver from the cable network. Additionally, Sievers discussed problems with the Calhoun High School server, which had been struck down from storms last weekend. The technology company in charge of the

district's server and computer issues – CNC Consulting of Greenfield – worked Aug. 17 and 18 to get the server back online. “CNC came and worked all day yesterday (Aug. 17),” Sievers said. “That’s kind of a little hiccup for our first day (Aug. 18).” The company had to replace some hard drives in the server, but ultimately didn’t lose any of the information on the disks. By Monday afternoon, she said the server was back to running at nearly 100 percent. She said the server is still under warranty, which kept costs for the work low, noting the hard drive replacements were around $100 to replace per drive. It is not clear how many drives were replaced. In talking about the first day of school all the administrators said things went smoothly. The teachers’ first day was Aug. 15 when a guest

speaker, Dave Shepard, talked with the district’s educators about how to get students more motivated in the classroom and how to promote a positive learning environment with more than just instruction. Kathy Schell, Calhoun Elementary School principal, said the teachers at her school have already taken to heart some of the lessons made during the presentation. She said she was able to visit each classroom on the first day to interact with the students and noticed his influence. “He was awesome. A lot of the teachers have already put the things in place. I’ve seen in the classrooms bulletin boards that are take-offs of some of the things that he presented to us,” Schell said. “I heard several people today say that he was one of the best onsite trainers we’ve ever had.” The elementary school principal said she was particularly impressed

that Shepard learned all the teachers’ names by the end of the workshop, a value reiterated throughout the discussion with the teachers. Some teachers from St. Norbert’s attended the workshop, as well. Schell said the district is working on its reading initiative to boost standardized test scores, and Shepard was quick to offer some ideas in how to promote a better atmosphere from reading. Getting members of the staff – cooks, custodians, and secretaries – involved in promoting a reading environment goes a long way toward making students more motivated to read, Sievers added. Calhoun High School Principal Cheri Burris brought to the board a request from a student to graduate in December this year. She said the student fell behind a semester and will complete all course credits by the end

of the first semester this school year and requires board approval to graduate early. No action was taken Monday. Additionally, Burris said the volleyball team would like Nate Sagez, owner of Calhoun Crunch, to visit the high school on certain days throughout the week to work with the team on strength training and conditioning. She said the athletes normally visit the Calhoun Crunch on Mondays when students are dismissed early from school which gives them time to strength train and get back to the school for practice. However, on other practice days, there is not enough time to travel to the gym and back for practice. Bringing Sagez to the school would be beneficial for the team, and would not interfere with other sports teams’ use of the weight room facilities at the high school, Burris said. Part-time workers want out of union contract

VOLUME 141 - ISSUE 34

by bOb CROSSEN Calhoun News-Herald The Calhoun County Commissioners tabled a decision on removing part-time workers at the sheriff’s department from the union contract during a regular meeting Monday. Deputy P.J. Parker, union representative for sheriff’s department employees, said the part-time workers for the department have expressed a desire to be taken out of the union contract. “Once we got back to full staff, they’re getting only two shifts a month, so they’re realizing that that $35 comes out of their paycheck to pay for their union dues. That takes one shift away from them, basically,” Parker said, noting the contract does not represent part-time employees, but rather mentions them throughout. In order for the part-time employees to be removed from the contract, they must vote in favor of such an action. The sheriff must also agree to the terms and the county board must also vote for their exclusion from the union, as well. Calhoun County Sheriff Bill

Heffington said he is in favor of removing them from the contract, and Parker said there will be no back-and-forth on this decision. Once part-time employees are no longer a part of the contract, they will not be allowed back in. Chairman Doug Wilschetz was hesitant about making a decision while commissioners Phil Robeen and Larry Wieneke were absent. That the decision could impact future part-time employees was also a note of concern, Wilschetz added. Commissioner Gene Breden said he would like to table the issue for further investigation, as well, and Pat Droege, commissioner, agreed. The issue will be discussed during the next regular meeting Sept. 4. Progress continued on the courthouse project at the old grade school in Hardin as the interior has been cleaned and stripped down to its studs by county highway workers, the chairman added. Much of the work on the project has been completed by county employees as a way to save costs on the project, rather than hire out the work through a contractor. With few exceptions, area ag programs surviving PCSD recovers stolen items, by RObERT LYONS Calhoun News-Herald Amidst the cuts to personnel, programs and extracurricular activities public schools are making to slash budgets, almost all local districts are clinging to their agriculture programs. Of the 13 school districts in the five-county area composed of Calhoun, Greene, Jersey, Pike and Scott only two – Brussels and Western – do not have ag programs. Beth Bettis, Greenfield High School principal, said being in a rural community makes offering agriculture classes a priority. “It is no shock that the number of students whose families are engaged in farming has declined,” Bettis said. “But, it’s still a very prominent part of the economy in this community.” Western High School in Barry dropped its ag program in March as part of the answer to its financial issues. Western’s interim superintendent, Terry Robertson, said he agrees ag is an important offering, but the need to cut expenses from the district’s budget left no alternative. Needing to overcome a $250,000 shortfall, the decision to drop ag and band allowed the district to slash nearly $100,000 annually from its budget. He said the state of Illinois is responsible for the financial mess at Western, and districts statewide. “You could end up cutting the most popular programs and sports just to stay alive financially, if it’s not required. But, you’re required to offer some courses that may be the least popular,” Robertson said. “That’s just the reality of the business we’re in.” Jersey Community High School’s program was put under the microscope during a period of financial restructuring during the 2013-14 school year. Thirteen employees and several programs were cut –including art, consumer sciences and middle school music – which, altogether helped the district cut $1.4 million from its annual budget. The ag program was reduced by half. “We lost one of the two teachers that we had. I don’t think it’s necessarily the ag programs that are struggling as much as it is the school districts in general,” Jeff Goetten, agriculture

teacher at Jersey Community High School, said. North Greene’s ag program faced a scare in early 2013, when its school board was presented with the possibility of having to cut most of its electives because of a budget crisis. However, the board instead chose to save $700,000 by closing White Hall Elementary. While all area public school districts have been bombarded with financial struggles due to proration of state funds and increased unfunded mandates, Bettis said she feels the agriculture program in Greenfield is relatively safe. “Ag would certainly not be the first cuts we would make,” Bettis said, noting her job does not include budgeting for district programs. “Our ag program does service so many students that I just don’t think that would be the first place we would look.” More than a half-dozen ag classes are available at Winchester High School. Principal Dennis Vortman said of the approximately 200 students at Winchester High, 54 percent are enrolled in at least one agriculture class. But, Winchester has not been immune to the financial struggles a majority of the state’s public schools are facing. Still, like Bettis, Vortman feels his program is not in immediate danger. He said, so far, the school board has refrained from making cuts to academic programs. “We have a lot of kids who come from a farming background, so it’s very important,” Vortman said, adding there is a plot of land near the school were students can grow crops, take soil samples and do other tasks which further their education. “They’re able to do a lot of things here at Winchester. They get real experience at some of the things that kids at other schools might not get.” The ag program at Carrollton High School is thriving, as well. Going into the 2014-15 school year, it will add veterinary science to its already robust ag curriculum. Despite having around 100 students enrolled at the high school, (See, ag programs, A2)

goods purchased with stolen money by bETH ZUMWALT Calhoun News-Herald A number of items stolen from Calhoun and Pike counties – along with other items believed to have been purchased with stolen money – have been returned to Pike County from Cleburne County, Ark. Pike County Sheriff’s Deputies have made at least two trips to Arkansas in an effort to solve the burglaries. Manuel Pressey, 55, Nebo, and

Penny Rinehart, 34, also of Nebo, are alleged to have burglarized several residences in Pike and Calhoun counties before fleeing to Arkansas. The two are charged in the burglary of the Darrin Pruett property where several power tools were taken and also in the burglary of Claude Wayne Riley’s residence where a large amount of money and other items were taken. Both residences are in the rural Nebo area. Police believe the stolen money was used to purchase a motorcycle,

a trailer and a truck. According to court records, Rinehart was arrested May 2, on a charge of driving while suspended and Feb. 14, Pressey was arrested on a charge of driving while revoked. Both Pressey and Rinehart waived extradition and have been returned to Illinois, and the stolen property has been recovered. The two also face charges in Arkansas on possession of synthetic cannabis. Steve Bowman shows off some of the tools he uses to harvest syrup from the maple trees on his property in north Calhoun each spring. The blue bag is attached to the tree by a spike which is the tap. The hydrometer, in the middle, tells Bowman the sugar content of his syrup after it has been cooked down.

Calhoun farm is the sweetest place around By BETH ZUMWALT Calhoun News-Herald Steve Bowman, a Pleasant Hill native, wants his property to be the sweetest place around. He has both maple syrup and honey production at this farm. Bowman harvested a couple hundred gallons of sap from maple trees on his north Calhoun property last spring and also has a couple of beehives “I took the sap to the Amish in Martinsburg,” the 1970 graduate of Pleasant Hill High School said. “They helped me cook 60 gallons of it down. After we cooked it down we had about two gallons of syrup.” The rest of the sap Bowman gave the Amish for their help. Bowman said he bought the property in Belleview in 2006 and immediately starting making improvements. “I had to do that first,” he said. “The day I bought it, they said I couldn’t go in the barn, it was too dangerous.” Bowman bought the property and immediately began fixing it up, starting with the barn. “In 2004, my wife and I had bought some property and half of a mile up the road,” Bowman said. “We used it as a church camp, but needed somewhere to store the mower and other tools. Rather than build something we bought this and will eventually retire here.” The Bowmans currently live in the Bloomington area, but Steve has already retired from his job as a computer architect and spends most of his time at the farm. Since buying the property, Bowman has purchased the former doctor’s office in Belleview and had it moved to his property. The historic building sits in his back yard. Once his property was in order, Bowman decided to start living a settler’s live. “I read a story about my grandfather and I decided I wanted to do things like he did then,” Bowman said. “I started with a big garden, all kinds

of vegetables, and I can and preserve a lot of things. I have planted a cherry tree, an apple tree and a pecan tree. I have grape vines, blackberry bushes and I love to mushroom hunt. Most of what I eat comes off this farm.” Bowman said he got into the maple syrup business just this year. “You have to get the syrup when it is still freezing at night but not freezing during the days,” Bowman said. “After it stops freezing at night, the syrup gets bitter. February, March and April are the best months.” The sap comes out thin as water and gains its color and consistency after it is cooked for a long period of time. Bowman said he cooked his 14 hours. “When it comes out of the tree it is at one to two percent sugar,” he said. “For syrup, you want it to be 61-67 percent sugar, so you have to cook the water out of it.” Bowman said he attended a crafters session at the McCully Heritage District to learn how to make the syrup and also visited Funks Grove in Bloomington, where they make about 1,700 gallons a year. “I learned a lot from them,” he said. Bowman said his first attempt was more by trial and error, but since then he has a hydrometer which is a stainless steel tube with a thermometer-like device that will tell him the temperature of the syrup and he can figure the sugar content. Bowman says he gives a lot of his syrup and honey away. He has also tapped into some walnut trees on his farm and says walnut syrup is good to eat, also. “And I’ve heard hickory makes good syrup,” he said. He got into the bee business, mainly for ecological reasons, but says he enjoys having the honey around. He has two hives and his own extractor and other bee-keeping equipment. “I just like to do things so my grandchildren can see how it used to be done,” Bowman said.

The Pike County Sheriff’s Department recently recovered several items stolen from Pike and Calhoun counties and other items purchased with money stolen in the two Illinois counties. The goods were discovered in Cleburne County, Ark., with the assistance of the Cleburne County Sheriff’s Department.

is a wide variety of ag choices at Greenfield, including ag mechanics, horticulture, landscape and turf management classes. “We don’t have a small engines class in our shop, so the way for a kid to get to some mechanics instruction would be through our ag mechanics class.” Goetten, who is also Illinois’ Section 15 FFA secretary, said the values the students build while in the ag and FFA programs are beneficial to them no matter what career path they may choose. “The FFA is promoting premier leadership, personal growth and career success,” he said. “That’s what we strive for. Whether or not a kid pursues a career in agriculture, they’re still going to gain some life-long skills that they’re going to need.” The Western School District has kept all the equipment and materials needed to revamp the program, if and when the time comes. But, Robertson said the situation at Western may get worse before it gets better. “I don’t think you ever want to give up having an ag program in rural Pike County,” Robertson said. “But, I don’t know, we might give up having school if Springfield continues the way they’re doing business.” Western, however, will maintain an FFA chapter, and recently approved Jeri Woods as the sponsor. The addition on the east side has also been knocked down, leaving the building an empty shell for the work to come. Wilschetz said the architect is ready to seek bids for windows and an electrical system for the building. “There might be a little bit of masonry work that needs to be done, but the windows that have been taken out, they need to be filled in,” Wilschetz said. Some of the broken windows in the building have been removed and replaced with plywood boards to prevent rain damage. Wilschetz said the architect and Bernie Loft, owner’s representative of the building, are still working through handicap options for the proposed courthouse because the front door is not accessible for handicapped individuals. One of the options discussed by the architect and commissioners was a small lift, which would be temporarily placed inside the front door of the building to lift those in wheelchairs up to the main floor, approximately one foot up from the door entrance. Wilschetz said he would like to avoid spending money on a temporary lift that could cost more than $40,000, as that money could be

Ag program (Continued from A1) Bluffs maintains agriculture classes. Pleasant Hill, another small district, offers nine courses in its ag program. Brussels may not have classes that fall under the ag title, but some of its offerings are considered part of the agriculture curriculum in other districts. Dr. Mark Martin, superintendent of Brussels Schools, said the industrial arts courses at hits district’s high school include welding and horticulture, which are included with the ag programs at several other schools, such as Winchester and Pleasant Hill. There is also a green house at the high school that allows students hands-on botanical opportunities. Within the past year, Brussels School Board approved a measure that clears the way for a 4-H club to be established in the community. “A couple teachers came to the board a little bit after the New Year and floated the idea of starting a unit. The school gives them permission to use our facilities. It’s not actually a school program, but it’s school people who are doing it,” Martin said. The vast majority of students at Greenfield take at least one vocational class during high school, and the ag offerings are very popular, according to Bettis. “We have a number of students who are not what I would call typical farmer kids, who take our ag classes,” Bettis said, noting there

Defender, Keisha Morris. Rinehart waived her preliminary hearing and is represented by David Shaw.

Secretary for Illinois James Craft, once a school discontinues its ag program, an FFA chapter can continue for up to three years. However, only students who were FFA members while the school offered ag classes are eligible to maintain FFA membership. Once those students have cycled through the system, the chapter will cease to exist. But, Robertson said there are several courses that can still be beneficial to students looking to pursue a future in agriculture. “The agribusiness and the health occupations fields are the ones that are blossoming,” Robertson said, noting science, math, marketing, business courses can parallel with the education received in an ag classroom. “You would hope through those courses you could offer some things that are going to be valuable to those kids if they don’t have an ag program.” Martin said the courses offered in his district – in addition to a 4-H club – seem to satisfy the desire within the community and student body for vocational learning, and as of now there are no plans to change the offerings at Brussels High School. “Honestly, it’s not something anyone has come to the board with for us to say, ‘We really need to start this,’” Martin said. “If there’s an interest, we always like to respond to people’s interests, if possible. We’re open to ideas.”

Additionally, the board discussed where it would place its ham radio, which would be used by the Emergency Services Disaster Agency of Calhoun in the event of an emergency. Initially, the board was approved to place the radio on a tower owned by the North Calhoun Fire District in Kampsville, and sent a letter requesting to use the tower for this purpose. However, the fire district board did not desire to have the ham radio placed at its tower in the northern part of Calhoun County. Instead, the ham radio will be placed on the radio tower in Hardin. It will be located below the other antennae so as not to interfere with the transmissions of other radio signals used by county employees and emergency services. The ham radio is an emergency services tool in the event that all other communication networks – telephone, cellphone, radio, etc. – are not available for use. The radio would allow for communication to different parts of the county to coordinate emergency services efforts. The commissioners also approved the minutes of the previous meeting, the bills and the fuel quotes.

Her place of birth was up a little country hollow named Silver Creek, just north of Kampsville. Her parents were Lillian Ansell and Henry Albert Becker. She is the middle child of five, a sister to Harry, Marguerite, Ansell and Gene. During her childhood she remembers working mostly in and out of doors with her father in the orchards on the Becker farm. Helen’s best friend growing up was Marie Benz Wyatt. She was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Benz. The two of them grew up just across the creek from each other. Helen has been a member of the Kampsville Presbyterian Church all her life. She was an active member and held office in the Presbyterian Women’s Sunshine Circle and Missionary Society. The lumber to build the church was taken off the Becker family farm. They married Jan. 10, 1934 in Jerseyville. She helped Paul run the Shell filling station and garage in Kampsville. In later years both she and Paul became very involved in the Republican Party and attended many meetings in support of Republican candidates. In 1959 Helen became the water bill collector for the Village of Kampsville. She made out and sent many water bills by hand and received many customers into the warmth of her home until 1983. This

gave Helen the chance to talk and visit with many of the town people. She and Paul were very instrumental in getting the existing water and sewer systems started in Kampsville. She was a member of Kampsville Presbyterian Church and the Sun Shine Circle at the church. Survivors include a son, Larry E. (JoEllen) Campbell of Loudon, Tenn.; a daughter, Linda E. (Otto) Retzer of Kampsville; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a great-great grandson. Ducks Unlimited officials praised the House of Representatives Natural Resources Committee’s passage by voice vote Wednesday, July 30, of the Federal Duck Stamp Act of 2014. The measure is now headed to the House floor for consideration. The Federal Duck Stamp Act of 2014, a bill introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate would raise the price of the Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp (duck stamp) to $25 from its current level of $15 and dedicate the amount of the increase to conservation easements with private landowners. “Ducks Unlimited appreciates the support of House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Doc Hastings (R-Washington) and Ranking Democrat Peter DeFazio (D-Oregon) in moving quickly to report HR 5069 to the House floor,” said Ducks Unlimited CEO Dale Hall. “We also appreciate the leadership of Subcommittee Chairman John Fleming (R-Louisiana) and the bipartisan co-sponsors in bringing the bill to the Committee

for consideration. The price of the duck stamp was last adjusted 23 years ago. Since then, the price of land has tripled and conservation buying power has diminished greatly. Once again, sportsmen and women are willing to lead in funding conservation that benefits all of our citizens.” Since its enactment in 1934, the federal duck stamp program has protected nearly 6 million acres of habitat through expenditures of more than $900 million. The price of the duck stamp has been raised only seven times. The last price increase raised the price of the stamp to $15 — the single longest period without a price increase in the program’s history. The Congressional Budget Office found that because the federal duck stamp is a user fee, such a price increase would have no net impact on federal spending. Sponsored by Chairman Fleming, HR 5069 is originally co-sponsored in the House by Congressmen Ron Kind (D-Wisconsin), Jason Smith (R-Missouri) and Rob Wittman (R-Virginia).

The late writer Flannery O'Connor kept a devotional journal when she was in her twenties and a student at the Iowa Writers' Workshop. It has recently been published under the title A Prayer Journal. O'Connor was a fervent Catholic and her journal is filled with interesting reflections on spirituality, as well as writing, which she saw as a way to express her spirituality and hopefully lead others to God. She laments early on that "I do not know you God because I am in the way. Please help me to push myself aside." Throughout the journal we witness an earnest young woman struggling heroically to be more pious, and striving to get out of God's way, i.e., how to get rid of the ego and let God fill up the space. Her simultaneous struggle to destroy the ego while seeking literary fame is sometimes the focus of her reflections, as when she says "Don't let me ever think, dear God, that I was anything but the instrument for Your story, just like the typewriter was mine." God desires to work through all of us, through our words and our deeds, if we can only get our egos out of His way.

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Ephesians 2:10

Ben Allen worked with a Montana man, Tracy Kroon, to find a bus of the same make and model as the original Grafton Dinky to create a replica. The bus will be outfitted with a grill and hood to mimic the distinct look of the rail bus that used to travel from Grafton to Alton.

By BoB Crossen Calhoun-News Herald The Grafton City Council approved a committee of community members to head the restoration of a Dinky replica to eventually be placed in the museum at the visitor’s center. Chaired by Bob Smith, the committee consists of Ben Allen, Trudy Allen, Dennis Berry, Peggy Berry, Ed Amburg, Tom Wright, Mary Lillisve and Dianna Huttes. The committee meets on the second and fourth Monday of the month at 2 p.m. at the Loading Dock in Grafton. The Dinky is a historic railbus fashioned out of a White Motor Company school bus that transported people from Grafton to Alton, with stops along the Great River Road during the trip. The original Dinky is located at the Museum of Transportation in Missouri, and efforts have been

made in the past to return the railbus to Grafton. The museum, however, has been reluctant to give up the converted bus. Ben Allen worked for years to find a replica bus that could be converted into a replica of the Dinky, and in his search he found a bus of the same make and model through a man, Tracy Kroon, in Montana. Kroon restored White Motor Company buses, which had been used as tour buses at Yellowstone National Park. Kroon found a bus that was put put up for auction in California. The city won the auction with an $18,000 bid, which was approved by the council. The bus was brought to Montana, and last August, Dan Bechtold volunteered to transport the bus to Grafton where restoration could begin. In October of 2012, the council approved $8,000 from tax increment financing money to

be used in the restoration of the dinky, specifically the front grille and hood. When the restoration is complete the replica Dinky will be located at the Grafton Visitor’s Center where a museum addition is going to be constructed. The city was issued a $650,000 community development grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to construct the addition, which will also be home to relics and historic items of interest relating to the history of Grafton.

Girl Scouts hosting ‘Movie in the Park’ The Girl Scouts are hosting a “Movie in the Park” event Friday, Aug. 22. There will be two locations to go to, either the town park behind the village hall in Brussels, or the William Horman Memorial Park in Hardin. The community is invited to come out and enjoy a family geared movie, which is still being determined to play at dark. We encourage those attending to bring blankets or lawn chairs for seat-

Fair design winner announced

ing. The scouts will be providing popcorn, bottled water and packaged drinks. This will also be an opportunity for girls of the community to come out to join Scouts. Registration will be at both locations from 7:15 to 8 p.m. for girls from kindergarten through high school. Financial assistance is also available to help both girls and adults who might otherwise be unable to participate in Girl Scouting. Examples

of circumstances when financial assistance may be needed include unemployment, high medical bills, and several girls from the same family becoming members, public assistance, or low income. Scouting is a wonderful program that helps build girls of courage, confidence and character. Scouts get this opportunity through meetings held twice monthly plus lots of community service projects.

■ Kampsville News by Millie Schumann ■ 653-4426 God received another angel in Heaven on August 17. Deener gave up the good fight and passed away with family surrounding him. His funeral will be Thursday. We will all miss him, but he was in so much pain, and we know he is with his beloved Lela now. Deener and I had a great relationship and he was always pulling something on me. He told Myra he would rather tease me than eat, and the man LIKED TO EAT. He waited until the day after my birthday to pass, and Bev said he didn’t want me to be ticked at him for passing on my birthday - which I am sure is right. Goodbye dear brother-inlaw - I will miss your jokes and pranks. I spent almost five hours on my birthday in the ER in Carrollton. I have been feeling really rotten for a week and finally Saturday, I couldn’t breath very well. I have

bronchitis, and am on some high powerful pills. Not my favorite way to spend my 78th birthday. Getting old is bad enough, but not being able to celebrate really sucks. I want to thank all my fish stand help for covering for us Saturday. Sorry I don’t feel like sending individual thank yous, but I really, really appreciate all you have done over the years to make the fish stand a success. To all my donors for the fireworks, thank you, thank you, thank you. Sorry I haven’t felt like sending individual thank yous. You have been so generous over the years, and helped make our fireworks a success. Bev and T enjoyed hamburgers with us Sunday noon. I even fried them, and they said they were good. Go figure. And how was your week? See you next week.

Jim and Arlene Brodbeck and Fred and Jane Boehn attended a 95 th birthday party for Robert Franke of O’Fallon, Mo. His two daughters, Sandra and Debbie, hosted it. The group the went cruising on the Grafton Belle from 3-4 p.m. and then traveled to Pere Marquette Park for dinner and birthday cake. Everyone had a great time fishing with family, and I think Robert will celebrate his 100th birthday if his daughters can keep him off the ladder (a family joke). Happy birthday Robert have a great year. Linda Russel entertained her

son, Jeremy and Angie and daughters, Zoey and Sadie on Sunday. There will be a Modern Woodman chicken dinner this Wednesday, Aug. 20 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Fill Inn Station. Come and enjoy a good meal with friends. God in My Garden James Joseph Huesgen I thank You for my garden, Lord, Where with Your hand I grow, I thank You for Your presence too, The seeds and love I sow. I thank You for the care that spills From every budding flower, And simply for the silent thrills I gain there, by the hour. Oh, the memories that fragrance brings, To touch the distant years, The beauty and remembrance That fill my eyes with tears. And, oh, my God – the temperance Within my soul it brings, Just to spend a time with You, Creator of all things.

Proposed courthouse gutted, prepped for windows and electric work

Richard J. Ringhausen stands in the eventual state's attorney's office in the proposed Marvin Richter Calhoun County Courthouse Monday afternoon. The county was donated $1 million toward the project from Delford Richter under the condition it be named after his father who was a major figure in the agriculture industry. Since the donation last year, the commissioners have been working on preparing the most cost efficient plan to move offices into the building before full completion of the project. Bids for windows and the electrical system are expected to be sought before the end of the year by the commissioners.

Since late last football season, Nelson has combined a fifth F to the mix – fighting for his life – with three cancer discoveries. He endured 36 chemotherapy treatments, 28 radiology treatments and three surgeries. Last high school football season, Nelson was the Dupo head coach and his team was riding a 4-4 wonloss record. He was driving home from practice at Dupo as he noticed he was bleeding and it just continued to worsen. When he attempted to walk in his front door, he collapsed to the ground. He spoke to the high school kids individually and also the seventh- and eighth-grade Calhoun Crush team and coaches,” Nelson said. Nelson was especially appreciative of what Motte did and it will leave a lasting impression with him and the Calhoun players. For now, the Calhoun defensive coordinator said he just wants to be “normal.” “I want to live my life and normal to me is coaching and letting the kids know that despite what happens in your life you can overcome,” he said. “If I can inspire them, that is great. I am trying to live my life and show people things might be negative, but you can push on. I am just trying to give back.”

Calhoun finds lasting motivation from Nelson When seeking inspiration, Calhoun County residents and high school varsity football players and coaches don’t have to look very far in observing Tim Nelson, who is battling for his life after three cancer discoveries. Nelson, who is going to be an assistant coach at Calhoun this fall, has recovered from surgeries, therapies, etc., in the last year, but he never let his faith waver. Sometimes people don’t know how much their consistent prayers and encouragement mean to someone going through a cancer diagnosis. Nelson also has had the helping hands of his football brothers of yesteryear in some of Calhoun’s best football teams ever. The Calhoun assistant coach said a person couldn’t make it through a disease like cancer without having support or someone mentor them. “When you talk with someone who has or has had cancer, they understand the struggle.” Nelson said the power of prayer has certainly showed in his recovery. In his last checks, he was 67 percent free of cancer in his lungs, from 9 mm to 3 mm in nodules, amazing for where he was some months earlier. “For four months I couldn’t hardly get out of bed, but I kept receiving all these cards and mail that people were praying for me,” he said. “You see all these people rooting for you and you don’t want to have a bad day and you don’t want to let them down.” Nelson and his close friends head coach Aaron Elmore and Jonah White, who is assisting, want to see the Calhoun football tradition return to what it was in years past. “I think our time is coming,” Nelson said. “They think I inspire them, but it is actually completely the opposite, they give me inspiration to get up every day and have faith.” Elmore and White both couldn’t say enough about how Nelson

inspires and motivates them and the Calhoun players. T i m recently turned 39 and has been married to his wife, Casey, for a Dan's little over a year. She sees when I am having a bad day and no one else sees it. It means everything what she has done for me. I have joked many times she received the broken model of me, but she has never given up.” Former Calhoun football coach Rick Johns, leader of the Warriors during the state runs when he was playing in 1992, is one of Tim’s best friends. “Coach Johns is like a dad to me,” Nelson said. “He calls me three to four times a week to talk. I look up to him and Coach Brandenburg from Calhoun so much.” Nelson is of the belief it is a miracle that he will be able to walk on to the Warriors’ field for the first game in about a week. “God has had his hand on me,” Nelson said. “It just seemed like he has been guiding me through this. My first goal the first day I found out I had cancer was to be back on the football field coaching this fall. It will be very emotional when I take the field at Calhoun High School on Aug. 29.” Dan Brannan is a regional consulting editor for Campbell Publications

Calhoun Health Department hosting open house Aug. 29 In honor of World Breastfeeding Month, Calhoun County Health Department will host an open house on Friday, Aug 29 from 1 to 4 p.m. The health department has two certified Lactation Counselors that provide the community with breastfeeding advice and support. Their mission is to educate everyone, not just mothers, on benefits of breastfeeding. Breastfed babies are healthy babies; they have lower risk of developing ear infections, diarrhea, pneumonia, bronchiolitis, and bacterial and viral infections.

The benefits don’t stop there; the mother’s health greatly benefits from breastfeeding, as well. Breastfeeding burns roughly 500 calories a day, reduces the risk of ovarian and breast cancer, and releases hormones that promote a mothering behavior. Since you don’t have to buy and measure formula, sterilize nipples, or warm bottles, it saves you time and money. It also gives you regular time to relax quietly with your newborn as you bond. The community is welcome to visit the office for snow cones,

cookies, and refreshments. A certified car seat safety technician will be available to check your vehicle for proper installation of car seats, and the Illinois State Police will have a squad car on display, along with Rollover Simulator demonstrations. The staff will be available to answer questions about all of the services offered and information on all programs including: WIC, family case management, home health, environmental health, and emergency preparedness, will be on display in our lobby.

IDA publishing book of family-owned farms The Illinois Department of Agriculture has announced plans to publish a commemorative coffee table book recognizing thousands of Illinois family-owned farms. The book will focus on farms that are winners of Centennial or Sesquicentennial awards. What’s in Illinois Historic Farms? The history of the Illinois Centennial and Sesquicentennial Farm program, including award criteria, selection process, and a complete roster of recipients. Histories and photographs submitted by award winning farm families. How can my farm be included? If your family farm has been recognized by the Illinois Department of Agriculture as a Centennial or Sesquicentennial Farm Award Winner, the publisher will contact you about your farm’s history. Illinois Historic Farms will be an 8.5 x 11 inch hardcover coffee-table book featuring smyth-sewn binding for durability. The paper will be acidfree, archive-quality for superior photo reproduction. The book will be covered in luxurious swirl-grained leatherette stock with foil stamping on the front lid

Calhoun News-Herald Illinois youth firearm deer hunt Oct. 11-13 D4

Wednesday, August 20, 2014

The 2014 Illinois Youth Firearm Deer Hunt is Oct. 11-13 for those hunters with a valid Youth Deer Permit who have not reached their 16th birthday by the first day of the hunt. Youth Deer Permits are available over-the-counter at license vendors throughout the state. Hunters may purchase only one permit (either-sex) for one of the open counties. Last year, Governor Pat Quinn signed into law legislation extending the Illinois Youth Firearm Deer Hunt from a twoday to a three-day season, providing an additional hunting day on the Columbus Day holiday. All youth hunters must have a current, valid Youth Deer Permit and have a regular hunting license, Youth Hunting License or Apprentice Hunting License, unless exempt. If using a regular hunting license, participants must have completed an IDNR-approved Hunter Education course. Each hunter participating in the Youth Deer Hunt while using an Apprentice Hunting or Youth Hunting License must be accompanied by a nonhunting, validly-licensed (Illinois hunting license) parent, guardian or grandparent who is 21 years of age or older. All other hunters participating in the Youth Deer Hunt must each be accompanied by a non-hunting supervisor (parent, guardian or responsible adult) who has a valid Illinois hunting license or who has in his or her possession a valid Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card. The non-hunting supervisor must wear the orange garments required of gun deer hunters (blaze orange cap and upper garment with a minimum of 400 square inches of solid blaze orange material), and must remain with the hunting youth. Each supervisor may only accompany a single youth at any given time during the hunt. Shooting hours for firearm deer hunting in Illinois are one half-hour before sunrise to one half-hour after sunset. IN THE CIRCUIT COURT OF THE 8TH JUDICIAL CIRCUIT CALHOUN COUNTY, HARDIN, ILLINOIS PHH MORTGAGE CORPORATION PLAINTIFF, -vs-

All Illinois counties except Cook, DuPage and Lake Counties, and that portion of Kane County east of State Route 47 are open for the youth deer season. Hunting hours are one-half hour before sunrise on to one-half hour after sunset on Oct. 11-13. The bag limit is one deer per legally authorized permit. All either-sex permits are subject to the following restrictions: no hunter, regardless of the quantity or type of permits in his/her possession, may harvest more than two (2) antlered deer during a year, including the youth, archery, muzzleloader and firearm seasons. Successful hunters must register their harvest by 10 p.m. on the same calendar day the deer is taken by calling the toll-free telephone check-in system at 1-866-ILCHECK or by accessing the online check-in system at www.dnr.illinois.gov/vcheck. They will be provided with a confirmation number to verify that they checked in their harvest. This number must be written by the hunter on the temporary harvest tag (leg tag). Youth hunters are reminded that archery deer season will be underway and archery hunters will be afield during the Oct. 11-13 youth hunt. Archery deer hunters and all other hunters are reminded that they must comply with requirements to wear blaze orange the weekend of the youth deer hunt (except in counties closed to the youth deer season). The IDNR-managed sites in the counties listed below are open to youth hunting during the Youth Deer Hunt. Note that some of the IDNR sites allow participation in the Youth Deer Hunt only by site-specific permit.
