Greenfield, state to collect water bills By CARMEN ENSINGER Greene Prairie Press Greenfield City Council approved entering into an intergovernmental agreement with the Illinois Comptroller’s office to aid in collecting delinquent water bills at its Nov. 14 meeting. The program offers any municipality in the state of Illinois that enters into the agreement the opportunity to collect on past due water bills from any state refund check the person might be entitled to. “What we are looking at is water bills that people have had and they moved out of town without paying them,” City Clerk Sherry White said. “We send the information into the state and if they issue them any check, the amount they owe us is taken out first and then they issue us a check.” Council members approved a change to the employee codebook regarding the probationary period for part-time employees who are hired as full-time employees.
Instead of having a six-month probationary period, the probationary period will be at the discretion of the supervisor and the council. “In other words, if we have a part-time employee and we hire them full time, it will be up to the council and their immediate supervisor as to how long, if any, probationary period there is,” White said. Mike Cavanaugh of West Central Development in Carlinville addressed the council about the grant writing his firm is involved in. Cavanaugh said if the city decided they had a project that would fall under the scope of a 75/25 competitive grant, which can be up to $450,000, it should not wait too long. “It takes three to four months from start to finish, and that is if you have an engineer on board,” he said. “Your problems are not going to go away, and sooner or later you will have to pay to get them taken care of. You might as well try for this grant money since it is your

house the council approved at last month’s meeting. “I’m concerned about the cost and what the improvements will be,” she said. “Sometimes I think it’s need versus want. I don’t remember anyone actually coming to a council meeting and saying the one there now is insufficient.”
In 2010, the council held a public meeting to discuss redoing the concession stand at the ballparks and for a new bathhouse on the north side of Rives Lake where the city operates a campground during the summer. There were more than 500 signatures on a petition stating they wanted a new bathhouse. The city’s engineers drew up plans for the bathhouse which would have covered 72 campsites at a cost of $190,000. More recently, those plans were revamped to accommodate only 42 campsites because there is already a bathhouse on the south side. Estimates for the new bathhouse came in at $78,000, less than half of the prior amount. Sharon White was concerned about the city not building it to code for the 72 campsites, but City Clerk Sherry White said the council had visited Pere Marquette State Park where they have 80 campsites and their bathhouse has less than what Greenfield is planning. Council members approved a sidewalk repair plan to redo some

of the city’s sidewalks. “It’s been a long time since they have done anything with the sidewalks,” Sherry White said. “We have an extra MFT (motor fuel tax) check we received which we are going to earmark for those repairs. In fact, they have already started doing some repairs.” The city will be looking for bids on a backhoe and for a project at the spillway located near the subdivision by the lake. White said the repairs were such that Greenfield did not have the equipment to do the repairs themselves. In other action, the council approved: n Renewing Jayhawke software support for one year at a cost of $700. Jayhawke is the computer program which does the city water bills. n Renewing support for the city’s computer system used in generating its water bills at a cost of $700, and adopted its yearly insurance package at a cost of $34,000 from Gazda Insurance of Carlinville.

Greene County Board approved four county aid bridge projects in Rockbridge and Kane townships at the Nov. 13 meeting at the request of County Engineer Dave Marth. The first two projects are in Rockbridge Township and involve replacing a small bridge located in the southwest corner of Greenfield at a total cost of $17,730.70 with the county’s portion coming to $8,865.35. The project would be completed using day labor. The second project in Rockbridge Township involves installation of a large pipe south of Greenfield at a total cost of $3,637.38 with the county’s portion coming in at $1,818.69. The county replaced a pipe culvert opposite of Woody off Rt. 67 at a cost of $7,120.51. Marth said the pipe was too deep for the township to do, so the county stepped in and did it. During the spring flooding Branch Creek washed out a cut through road between the quarry and the creek, and the county repaired this at a cost of $3,384.19. Both of these projects qualified for county bridge assistance and the townships petitioned for assistance. The county had to table the annual motor fuel tax appropriation until next month because it was not put on the agenda. Marth said the county would be asking for the same amount they have asked for during the last three years which was $450,000. This is money the county uses to take care of the roads including snowplowing, salting, etc. Board members approved a resolution in the amount of $5,000 which allows someone from the appellate prosecutor’s office to try cases in which there is a conflict of interest with the county state’s attorney. County Board Chairman Joe Nord appointed Clayton Arnett to fill a three-year term on the Hartwell Drainage District and recommended the board accept the resignation of Tim Ferguson as a trustee with the Greene County Rural Water District.
North Greene Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the second annual Old Fashioned Christmas in White Hall will be held this Friday, Nov. 22 from 6-8 p.m. Businesses throughout White Hall will stay open late offering special sales and deals along with free hot chocolate and cookies. Shoppers will also have the chance to win $500 in Chamber Cash. “This is our way of trying to get shoppers into our local businesses here in White Hall to do their holiday shopping,” North Greene Chamber of Commerce member Lisa Inman said. “We want people to realize that even though we are small businesses, we can still carry merchandise for the holidays.” In addition to getting great deals, customers also have the opportunity to walk away with some Chamber Cash. “We will be giving away one grand prize of $100, two prizes of $50 and 15 prizes of $20,” Inman said. “This Chamber Cash can be used in any of our participating stores. Just give the store the Chamber Cash and they turn it into us and we pay them for your merchandise.” People’s Bank and Trust will have a horse-drawn wagon available for buggy rides from 6-8 p.m. and children will be entertained by Santa and a free children’s movie which will be shown in the drive-thru of Pharmacy Plus. “We are in the process of trying to get an enclosed tent in case it is really cold so the kids can be in out of the weather,” Inman said. “We thought this would keep the kids busy while their parents did their shopping.” The event also coincides with the Chamber’s house decorating competition. This competition is for any home in the North Greene area including White Hall, Roodhouse, Patterson, Hillview, Barrow, Walkerville, Belltown, and any other area included in the North Greene School District. Homes must be decorated by Nov. 30 to be included in the competition. The Chamber will announce the winner on Dec. 20 and the lucky winner will receive $200 in Chamber Cash to be used in participating stores. Inman said last year was pretty good but hopes this year is even better. “It’s just a one night thing where you can get that extra sale you might not have gotten otherwise,” Inman said. “Of course, the stores will be open during the day, but the sales and specials will be between 6-8 p.m.”

Carrollton Council appoints Pohlman assistant police chief By CARMEN ENSINGER Greene Prairie Press Carrollton City Council got a late start at its Nov. 13 regular meeting because there were not enough aldermen present for a quorum at the 7 p.m. start time. Aldermen Tom Wilson, Joe Harness and Sean Walker were absent. Present were Aldermen Sharon Butler and Dewayne Freand and Mayor David Stendeback. The council waited 15 minutes for Alderman Wayne Cunningham to arrive so as to have a quorum. There were only two items on the agenda – the annual Christmas party and the appointment of an assistant police chief. Upon recommendation of the personnel committee which consisted of Aldermen Butler, Freand and Cunningham, Officer Reggie Pohlman was appointed as assistant police chief. Pohlman had been assistant chief under former Police Chief Terry Gross who was replaced as chief in May with Kenny Kallal. Mayor David Stendeback said the appointment was delayed because of the pending union contract. “They were going to make the
appointment a couple months ago but they said they might as well wait until the contract was finalized,” Mayor Stendeback said. “Right now we are just waiting for the employees to come in with their time sheets because they will get paid retroactive to May 1, which is when the original contract ended.” The city Christmas party will be held at Goetten’s Oasis on Dec 13. Mayor Stendeback said this year they planned to include members of committees and their spouses. “We have people who do not work for the city but they give of their time to serve on committees like the library or pool,” Mayor Stendeback said. “They get nothing for all the work they do and we just want them to know we appreciate them for all they do.” The next regular finance meeting for the city will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 11 at 6 p.m. with the meeting to follow at 7 p.m. The workshop scheduled to be held on Wednesday, Nov. 27 has been changed to Monday because of the Thanksgiving holiday, and Stendeback said it was possible it could be cancelled if there is nothing on the agenda.

Carrollton Pool enters Community Carol Sing into recycling program scheduled for Dec. 1
By CARMEN ENSINGER Greene Prairie Press The women of the Carrollton Presbyterian Church, along with Evans Ford and IGA, are asking for help to fill a pickup truck with donations of food and nonperishable items to be donated to the food pantry. Evans Ford will be providing the pickup truck, which will be located in the parking lot of IGA in Carrollton on Saturday, Nov. 23 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. “We are hoping that as people go into the store to do their shopping for Thanksgiving that they will think of others and maybe buy a few cans of food or something to donate,” Presbyterian Women Association treasurer Donna Reif said. “We wanted to try and do something to involve everyone in the community instead of just our church. People are also welcome to bring things from their own pantry.” The holidays are an especially trying time on local food pantries. “Family usage has increased because of the economy,” Reif said. “It’s really sad that in today’s society we have so many people that are in need.” There are numerous organizations which try and help out during the holidays such as Operation Christmas, Rainbow Run which provides coats for children, and the Angel Tree which is located at many different churches. “There are different organizations doing different things but food is one of our primary goals,” Reif said. “We are an aging church, so to speak, but there are still people in our church who want to help. They can’t do a lot physically, but they can make donations.” The church designates a specific item, such as boxed cereal, each month and members are encouraged to make a donation when they come
to church. This is then given to the food pantry. “The food pantry provides the essentials like the butter, hamburger, bread, etc,” Reif said. “We like to provide the extras like the paper products, personal hygiene products, cereals, etc.” Reif said it was one of their younger church members who came up with the unique idea of filling a pickup truck bed with canned goods. “Tim Reif came up with the idea because he drives a truck and delivers food across the country,” Reif said. “It’s nice to get some young blood in the church who has new ideas and then, of course, we all jump on the bandwagon.” Reif stressed the fact that any nonperishable items are needed not just food. “If someone doesn’t have enough money to buy food, it just makes sense they probably aren’t going to have money to buy things like toilet paper, soap, etc.,” Reif said. “Things we take for granted.” Of course, monetary donations are always welcome. “Money is always good because they will use this money to buy the extra produce and stuff like that,” Reif said. “I know the food pantry is not allowed to give out money, but they can use this money to buy the extra necessities.” Specific food items needed include pastas, peanut butter, jellies, crackers, mashed potato mix, soups, canned fruit, cereal, macaroni and cheese or anything else nonperishable. Non-food items needed include laundry soap, dish soap, hand soap, shampoo, deodorants, paper products, etc. For more information to help the food pantry or if you happen to know someone who needs the assistance, contact a local church pastor or call (217) 942-3157.
Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas in Carrollton without the annual Community Carol Sing and organizers are looking for special music whether it be a solo, duet, ensemble, instrumental or choral to share with the community. The Community Carol Sing will be held Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. at the United Methodist Church. “This will be the 30th year for the Community Carol Sing and we would like to continue this tradition for beginning the Advent season for everyone,” Pauline Langer,
who is helping to organize the event, said. “We welcome anyone who would like to participate with special music such as a solo or duet or even if they play an instrument we would love to have them perform and then participate in a carol sing.” All area churches are urged to participate this year in the program. “We are not going to have a formal program, but it will be helpful if we know who is planning to participate,” Langer said. If you would like to participate, please contact Pastor Sara Brown at (217) 942-3445 or Langer at 942-3964.

Now is the perfect time to not only get some extra cash for Christmas but to also help the Carrollton Municipal Pool. Carrollton Alderwoman Sharon Butler announced the pool had signed up with Ameren Illinois ActOnEnergy recycling program and between now and Dec. 31 they will receive $20 from Ameren for every residential refrigerator or freezer recycled through the ActOnEnergy efficiency program. The owner of the fridge or freezer will receive $50. Butler, who is also a member of the pool board, said she found out about the program by accident. “I had called Ameren about something else and found out about this program while I was on the phone with them,” she said. “After they told me about it, I did a little research and found out a lot of groups have done this and it is a good project to raise money for an organization.” According to Ameren, switching to a more energy efficient refrigerator or freezer can save a consumer up to $150 a year in energy costs. In addition to the $50 they pay the customer for their old appliance,
they also come and pick it up free of charge. “The appliance must be in working order,” Butler said. “In other words, the freezer must still freeze and the refrigerator must keep things cool.” Those who have a sentimental attachment to their old appliances will be glad to know their fridge will not end up in a junk yard. “They take the old refrigerators and freezers to their recycling facility in Springfield where they recycle the metal, glass and plastic parts,” Butler said. “These parts are then recycled and made into brand new products.” There is some criteria which must be met. One must be an Ameren Illinois electric customer and the appliance must be full size (10-27 cubic feet.) It must also be in working condition. Pickup must be from a residence and not a business. Call (866) 899-9088 weekdays from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. or Saturday between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. to schedule your free pickup and give the Carrollton Pool as a referral. Normally, the pool would receive $10 from your referral, but through Dec.31, they have doubled the referral amount to $20 for each completed pickup.

Anniversary
Rathgebers celebrate 50th wedding anniversary Fred and Brenda Rathgeber celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Oct. 9. They were married at the United Methodist Church in Rockbridge. Their attendants were Harold Freer, brother-in-law of the groom, and Alinda Coates, sister of the bride. Fred is the son of the late Wilbur and Ruby Rathgeber. Brenda is the daughter of the late Delbert (Buck) and Alfreda Reavis. The Rathgebers are the parents of two daughters, Michelle (companion Tony Piercy) Rathgeber of Jacksonville and Marcia (husband Curt) Borcky of Greenfield. Their grandchildren are Justin and Kimberly Bowen of Jacksonville and Cassie and Layne Borcky of Greenfield. They have four great-
grandchildren. The Rathgebers lived in the Chicago suburbs of Elgin and Woodridge for several years, where Fred was self-employed. They returned to Greenfield in 1982 and together owned and operated Westside Food & Beverage. After selling the business in 1998, Brenda continued to work for the new owners until she retired in 2010. Fred Currently works at Alton Mental Health Center as a Security Therapy Aide and plans to retire in December 2013. The Rathgebers celebrated with a seven-day trip to Punta Cana in the Domican Republic. They were accompanied by their daughter, Marcia, and son-in-law, Curt, and granddaughter, Layne. All had a wonderful time!
At our home this is the month of birthdays and Thanksgiving. Eggnog, baked chicken, carrot cake, chocolate fudge and cider - all from Meehan’s IGA here in Greenfield. Pumpkin pie, apple pie and pecan pie are mighty good with Prairie Farm’s shake-up whipped cream in a can. Remember a little goes a long way and don’t overeat! My birthday was Nov. 9. Thank you for cards, flowers, telephone calls and to Clifton and Shirley Hammon, the trip to Alton, across the river and back up the Great River Road. The sun brought forth the beauty of the Autumn leaves. We saw a sailboat. The Piasa bird on the rocks had been repainted. I told Clifton that when I was a child, I though Mr. Sun was married to Lady Moon, the stars were their children. Clifton laughed and said, “When I was little, when it thundered I yelled, “Daddy get off the railroad tracks” “grandpa get down from that ladder” and “Uncle Dick, come down from the telephone poles.” We had a delicious meal. Instead of cake, I enjoyed a brownie. Clifton knows that I do not care to ride the ferry at Kampsville. The motion makes me carsick. We had barely left Pere Marquette State Park when he grinned and said, “Which way mom?” I told him, “If you drive across the Illinois River Hardin Bridge turn left, you could go up to Eldred, right on 108 to Carrollton.” He chose to drive to Jerseyville, southwestern on home on 267. There was much corn to be combined. We listened to the Tiger football game on the radio. Sorry about the defeat. We think the stained glass windows with Fleur de Lis design on the clock tower is beautiful. Recently people from Greenfield went to Jerseyville to see Pearl Wells Burnett. Her son, Ronnie Burnett was visiting her. I have known Pearl for 80 years. She enjoyed square dancing with my brother, Elmer. When Pearl’s Grandpa and Grandma Wells retired from Baur Store area they lived in a nice home a half block from my parents. Pearl had a sister Mary Frances who was in the third and fourth grades with my sister Melba Love. When Pearl’s father retired, property was bought three doors east of us. I must have been away when ‘Pop’ Wells (as everyone called him) went to Glory. After marriage, Mary Frances lived out of state. One summer she visited her mother bringing as beautiful little daughter to see me. Pearl had told Mary Frances that I was teacher and would probably tutor her in reading, which I did. We three, mother, daughter and I became friends immediately. Mother went to Grandma Wells and the little girl was shy. She read the vocabulary list in the index correctly. In three lessons she read her book. Pearl B. has a daughter Sandra Custer who resides on a farm with husband near Berdan. Yes, she was an excellent student of mine. I remember quite well the linen handkerchief (shades of red) that she gave to me. The last time I saw Sandra she was filling prescriptions at Pharmacy. Three years ago when my Colorado sister, Mel was here I bought a baby ring for her great-grandson, Justice Hollis and me for my great-granddaughter Averrie Cole Crumly. Clifton Hammon told me that recently Father Shipley had departed to Heaven to claim his inheritance. When Clifton was a student at Blackburn University from 1976 to 19080, Father Shipley served at Chaplain of Blackburn University in Carlinville. When Clifton’s grandmother, Caroline Love was a patient at University Manor, Father Shipley’s mother and my mother visited each other every day. The dear lady passed away in my mother’s room. I met the father’s wife and assisted her with finding mint jelly for the Paschal Lamb. The Father served as minister of a humble Episcopal Church south of Carlinville Square. During an “Ice Show” one year, Dale and I walked down and visited. As we entered we rang a bell and entered another double door. It was lighted with beautiful kerosene lamps. The pews were hand-hewn with crocheted cushions, the runner from the door to the altar was loomed rag carpet. Former Greenfield teachers and residents Dee (d) and Ella Mae Foster and family were members of the Chesterfield Episcopal Church as was Mrs. Ella Mae’s folks. Just now Clifton and I talked and he had copied this obit from the paper, which can be found online. Memorial services for Fr. Wayne Sanford Shipley were held Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013 at 1 p.m. in St. Paul’s

OBITUARIES
Carrollton, Illinois
Barrow Baptist Church news
Barbara G. Pope, 93, of Champaign, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013 in Urbana. Barbara was born Feb. 18, 1920, in her parents’ home at 404 W. Green St., Champaign, a daughter of Fred H. and Bertha Gillingham. She married Robert Parker Pope in a small ceremony in Pueblo, Colo., on April 27, 1944, before his deployment to the U.S. Army Air Corps in Europe during WWII. Robert pre-deceased her, having died on Feb. 3, 1997 in Champaign. Robert “Bob” had been born on a farm near Kane on Aug. 10, 1919. His parents were Whitney Parker Pope and Vesta Randolph Greene Pope. His paternal grandfather was Jacob G. Pope, who gave the Kane Cemetery to the community, and his maternal grandparents were Robert W. and Nolia Darlington Greene, who owned the bank in Kane. The family lost their farmland and the bank during the Great Depression and moved to Champaign in 1933 when Bob was 14, but after he inherited a farm near Kane from his second-cousin ,W. Neil Greene, in 1976, he and Barbara frequently visited Kane, Carrollton, and Jerseyville, and had a wonderful time striking up reacquaintances with many of Bob’s old friends and relatives in the area until Bob died in 1997. Ironically, Barbara Gillingham also had relatives in Carrollton, but apparently she and Bob never realized that during those years. Barbara attended Champaign High School where she was an active thespian, and met her future husband while he was a student at Urbana High School. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority at the University of Illinois, where she graduated with a major in English. She became a devoted stay-athome mother for her children and loved her role as parent and grandmother.
Along with Bob, she dedicated herself to raising her children and living her life according to strong moral and religious values, and acquired and passed on educational values and musical training to her children. Those who knew her were constantly tickled by her wonderfully clever sense of humor and were touched by her ready smile, vibrant spirit, positive attitude, and gratitude for the blessings in her life and the kindness of others. Surviving her are Barbara and Bob’s son, Kip Pope and his wife, Janet of Champaign; their daughter, Whitney Shapland and her husband, Robert, Jr. of Bloomfield, Mich., and their son Clayton Pope and his wife, Karen of Champaign. A public visitation was held on Sunday, Nov. 17, at Morgan Memorial Home, 1304 Regency Drive West, Savoy, Ill. There was a private funeral service for the family. Condolences may be sent by email to Morgan Memorial Home at mmh2001@aol.com or by mail to the Pope Family, 703 Fairway Drive, Champaign, IL 61820. April Fools Day will never be the same without her.
Roy E. 'Sam' Rhoades Roy E. “Sam” Rhoades, 69, formerly of Carrollton, died Tuesday morning, Nov. 19, 2013 at Jerseyville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Jerseyville. Born in Carrollton on Aug. 5, 1944, he was the son of the late Roy and Florence Beckmann Rhoades. Surviving are his sisters, Helen (husband) Harry Flowers of Carrollton, Mary Hacker of Las Vegas, Nev.; a brother-in-law, Don Busey of Carson City, Nev.; a sisterin-law, Mary Rhoades Vinyard of Carrollton; and several nieces and

nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, “Bud” Rhoades; and two sisters, Rosie Flowers and Norma Busey. Sam was an auto mechanic and operated a lawn care business for many years in Carrollton. He loved to visit with his close friends. He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Carrollton. As per his request, he will be cremated. Memorial services may be held at a later date. Condolences may be left online at: www.airsmanhires.com.
News from Barrow Baptist Church and church family. Our pastor is Bro. Gerald Day and our service times are 9:30 a.m. Sunday school, followed by 10:30 a.m. morning worship with nursery service available. Everyone is welcome to either or both services. On Sunday, Nov. 17 we had 33 attending Sunday school, followed by 36 in attendance for morning worship. Remember our men and women in uniform and the leaders of our nation in your prayers. Others to remember include Keith Forrester, Lucille Seely, Rod and Connie Sturgeon, Amber Gourley, Grace George, Beth Clemons, Lacie Howland, Brenda Early, Fred Grable, Jim Powell, Larry Miner, Paul Mason, Teri Parker, Dora Baird, Michael Ryan and the Mamie Davis family. Happy birthday wishes go out to Judy McCurley on Nov. 24 and Larry Forrester on Nov. 25. There are no anniversaries to report this
week. Saturday, Nov. 16 our church ladies sponsored lunch at the Marty Smith farm sale. The committee for the lunch was Peggy Clemons, Judy Cannon and Birdie Sturgeon. Proceeds from the lunch is going to the Independence Fund for wounded veterans. This group buys track wheelchairs for wounded veterans enabling them to do outdoor activities such as fishing and hunting. Activities that are impossible with regular wheelchairs. 375 was raised from this sale and our church is matching it, so we are sending a $750 donation. I hope everyone survived all the wind we have been having these last few days. Don't forget to offer prayers for those that have lost their homes, loved ones, etc. in the storms that occurred Sunday. That's all for this week. Have a good week and share a smile with everyone you meet.

We are all called to fill the place where God wants us to be. Many are called but few are chosen. Many choose not to fulfill their place where God wants them to be. God knows all about use. If
God be for us, who can be against us? Jesus is at the right hand of God making intercessions for us. God created us in his image and wants to have fellowship with us. No one can separate us from God. Sunday evening: Bro. Brad led us in singing hymns. Bro. Johnny read the complete 8th chapter of Romans. Bro. Baxter then did a complete review of the chapter. We serve a living Saviour he's in the world today. We have an enemy which is Satan. Satan is very busy trying to ruin our witness to others. We have now finished Romans Chapter 8. We have Confidence in the Lord...2 Thessalonians 3:4 A warm welcome from our church family to all of you. We would like to invite you to our Sunday Services. Our service today Nov. 17 included music from our choir and a special message from our guest speaker, Don Carpenter. He thanked our congregation for allowing him and his wife, Angie to serve this Sunday at Eldred and we were all so blessed. Mr. Carpenter's children participated in children's church. Special recognition of Jackie Lakin and Drew Adcock for the delightful music presentation. Our message today was on Philippians 4: 5-9 Today is the third part of Mr. Carpenter's message on 1- right praying, 2right thinking and last but not least 3- right doing. By trusting in the Lord and obeying him, his followers would
be victorious in spite of great obstacles...He will never leave you or forsake you! The practice of right praying brings right doing. We all know what God wants us to do as Christians but we must also live our lives daily with praying, reading His Word and doing the right things. Are you following God's “to do list”? God is our peace. Don't be anxious about tomorrow, but in everything pray. Our church serves a supper and a lesson on Jesus each Wednesday evening at 6 pm for all local children. Our church has a dedicated Bible Study Group that meets every Thursday morning at 10 am. Our Sunday services include Sunday school at 9 am and regular services at 10 am. Our services are always open, please come and join us. Be Jesus to everyone you meet sincerely and His love will shine through you.

There are lots of good reasons to limit our intake of food, ranging from health and financial reasons to emotional and spiritual benefits. An ancient idea that has recently gained traction is the practice of fasting. Instead of trying to limit one’s calories each and every day, some scientists are proposing the idea of Alternate-Day Fasting or ADF. ADF regimens typically allow the person (or animal, lots of experiments have been done using rats and mice) to eat whatever he or she wants one day and then requires them to fast or consume a very limited number of calories the next day. More research needs to be done, but preliminary findings are promising, suggesting that ADF may reduce the risk of diabetes, heart disease and even cancer. Some are even suggesting we could live longer if we followed an ADF regimen. But, how might such a regimen benefit us emotionally and spiritually? Fasting and self-mortification can obviously be taken to extremes where they become unhealthy and even life-threatening. But, most of us suffer from the opposite problem: we are too selfindulgent. Delayed gratification and a sense of accomplishment is one of the byproducts of a successful fast. Eating can bring momentary pleasure but controlling one’s appetites gives a deeper sense of lasting joy. – Christopher Simon

It truly was a day to remember. In the morning were tornados, rain and wind. A lot of trees blown down around this area. To the east of us tornados. In the afternoon sunshine and windy and warm. What a change today! It is colder and windy, but sunny. If you don't like Illinois weather, stay around three days, it changes. So much for the weather report. The message was very good. If a man does not work, he does not eat. 2 Thes. 1. If that stayed true in this day and age, there would be a lot of people very slim. Have faith. We had a very good group. It was so good to see many that had not been here for a while. It is always good to get back home. Next Sunday will be our thanksgiving dinner. Everyone is invited. Turkey will be furnished, as well as the drink. If you live a long distance from home, this is a good time to return. Our prayer list is long: Billy Schulbottum (he got injured cutting down a tree and is bad shape) pray that the pain will be lightened. Bonnie Hardwick, Robert Hardwick, Malin family, Garner family, Ray and Patty Baldes (it will be so good having you back, Patty, our prayers are with you), Monica Heard's friends, the Philippines, (Monica's brother is safe), pastor's father, Andy Ross, Brenda Henson, Betty Newman,
Melanie Mast, Debbie Sprong. The question for last week was answered real well, Teresa. You did a good. The seven things God hates are in Prov. 6: 16 - Haughtiness (boastful), lying, murdering, plotting evil, eagerness to do wrong, a false witness, sowing discord among others. This week's question will be for two weeks away. How many years did it take to write the Bible? You will have to go to the history part of your Bible to find the answer. You have two weeks to look it up. There are many places it tell us in the Bible that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Act. 20: 35 is only one. Try Jesus if you don't like him the devil will always take you back. Remember, no one is in charge of your happiness, but you. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do. Life is not tied with a bow, but it is still a gift. Thank God every day for your life and show him you care. Going to church would be a real good way to show him and Walkerville is a good place to find him and his love. We all love you and pray to see you in church Sunday. Come hungry. Always plenty of food. It always makes you smile to come to church. Let us see your smile Sunday. We always give you one back.

Carrollton, Illinois
Local man seeking state office By ROBERT LYONS Greene Prairie Press A Jerseyville man has announced he will run for the State House of Representatives in the 100th District. Josh Evans, a native of Carrollton, said he’s running on the Democratic ticket, but is not bound by any party’s values. “This is a time we need someone who’s a street fighter who’s willing to go after interests,” Evans said. “I don’t think that transcends into one party or another, I think it’s just the individual person.” The state’s 100th District is comprised of Jersey, Calhoun, Pike, Greene, Morgan counties, as well as parts of Macoupin and Sangamon
counties. Republican C.D. Davidsmeyer of Jacksonville currently represents the 100th District. Evans said, as of now, no one is challenging him in the March Primary, and he anticipates being the Democratic candidate come next November. He already has stances on several hot topics in the state, including the budget, pension reform and concealed carry, which he favors. “I consider myself a conservative and I don’t run from that because I’m in the Democratic party,” Evans said. “If you’re looking for my priorities, the district comes first and party comes second, every time.” The district, he said, is need of a representative who can recognize and stand up for the issues facing its
residents. That is the No. 1 reason Evans decided to announce his candidacy, he said. “When Jim Watson resigned, I realized we lost a fierce advocate, I mean someone who really cared about the district, really understood the district and someone who could advocate for us,” he said. Evans enlisted in the Air Force at age 17, and served tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. He said he has been witness to extreme wasteful government spending and hopes to work with lawmakers to develop solutions to the problem. Evans plans to deliver his first three speeches as a candidate on Friday, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Jacksonville courthouse. At 11 a.m. he will speak at the Scott County
courthouse in Winchester, followed a speech at Pittsfield’s Pike County courthouse at 12:45 p.m. Then at 6:30 p.m., he is hosting a kickoff party at Goetten’s Oasis in Carrollton. He has worked on campaigns with other Greene County natives, including Matt Goetten’s bid for Congress and Craig Grummel’s run for Greene County state’s attorney. Evans is married to Jersey County native and former fair queen Ashely Rowling. Evans graduated from Carrollton High School in 2005. He has a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and is finishing his law degree at Saint Louis University. He currently works for Wittman and Lorton, P.C.

County football teams make fall fun Greene County Well that was fun, wasn't it? It was a fall football season to remember in Greene County. From what I can tell, this was just the first time The Sam Antics since the 1999 By Sam Elliott season that all three county schools reached Illinois' Class 1A playoffs. It was the first trip there since 2009 for the Greenfield-Northwestern Tigers and the North Greene Spartans ended a postseason drought that stretched back to 2005. Carrollton made the deepest playoff run, winning its first-round game and nearly making a return to the Class 1A quarterfinals. If not for a Casey-Westfield touchdown in the final seconds of regulation, the Hawks could have faced off against No. 1 seed Tri-Valley — who knocked off North Greene in the first round — Saturday. A rematch against Maroa-Forsyth — who eliminated Carrollton last season — would have been up for grabs in that matchup. The Hawks (9-2) have plenty to be proud of, repeating as Western Illinois Valley Conferece South champions and winning at least nine games for a second-straight year. And there's no sign of slowing down in Carollton. Quarterback Jacob Smith, leading rusher and receiver Luke Palan, do-it-all man Cole Brannan and top tacklers Cody Leonard and Marcus Lippert will all be back again next season even hungrier for wins. "We've got such a young nucleus," head coach Nick Flowers said. "We're not graduating very many kids and we know we are going to have to get stronger and faster in the offseason. We're going to get it done for sure."
The Hawks have been getting it done the past two years, but I think it's safe to say they have aspirations of more than just second-round and quarterfinal appearances. "We have things to build off of here," Flowers said. "We're not satisfied with being here. We've continued to say we have to get in the playoffs and go the whole way. We feel like with the group we have coming back, the future looks bright for Carrollton football." That football future looks bright across Greene County. The Greenfield-NW Tigers, rich in history and tradition, will be looking to start another streak of playoff trips in 2014. The graduation of quarterback Isaac Masters, leading rushers Dakota Coffey and David Gibbs and top receiver Riley Marsh will create a bit of a rebuilding project for the Tigers, but I know Joe Pembrook and Co. are up the task and are eager to re-establish GreenfieldNW as a Class 1A powerhouse. After its first wining regular season since 2005, North Greene would sure like to begin a streak of such seasons and take things another step farther next year. The Spartans just missed out of the playoffs at 4-5 last season and it looked like their hopes this year might have been in doubt following a tough loss to Pleasant Hill. But North Greene bounced back by winning its next two games to set up a playoff play-in game with Unity. "I didn't have to give the greatest pregame speech in the world," coach Tony Rhoades said. "These kids realized we haven't been playoffeligible in years and were chomping at the bit." The return to the playoffs for Greenfield-NW and North Greene, plus another championship year in Carrollton, should have football fans already looking forward to next fall. selliott@campbellpublications.net

GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP
Area hoops season tips off Greene County's girls basketball season is underway, with the Carrollton Lady Hawks and North Greene Lady Spartans tipping off their seasons Monday followed by the Greenfield-Northwestern Lady Tigers Tuesday. Carrollton opened its 2013-14 campaign with a 49-35 win against Gillespie Monday on its home court. The Lady Hawks led by just a 21-18 margin at halftime, but a 17-8 advantage in the fourth quarter helped Carrollton put away Gillespie down the stretch. Junior Rachel Williams led all scorers with 16 points for the Lady Hawks, who got 13 points from McKenzie Ruyle and nine from classmate Madison Mountain. It was the Carrollton head coaching debut for Brian Madson, who inherits a team that went 24-8 and finished one win away from a sectional championship last season. "Most of the time when you take over a program, it's kind of down in shambles," Madson said. "But I'm walking in to a team that's been very successful and is fairly young still. "There are definitely high expectations this year," he added. "I'm going to encourage that and the girls know what I'm expecting from them. It should be a good season." The Lady Hawks' season continues at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Brown County in Carrollton. The team plays its first road game of the year at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bunker Hill. North Greene's Destyne Powell lines up a shot against Brussels Monday in White Hall. The sophomore led the Lady Spartans with 19 points in their seasonopening, 74-42 win against Brussels. selliott@campbellpublications.net
North Greene began its season with a 74-42 win against Brussels Monday in White Hall. A 13-0 run to begin the game helped North Greene reach a 20-1 lead through the first quarter. "Starting off that game, we were moving the ball well and pushing for some open shots," head coach Jim Roesch said. The Lady Spartans had four players reach double digits in scoring, led by sophomore Destyne Powell's 19 points. Junior Arika Hull added 15 ponts, Halie Kraushaar scored 13 and sophomore Darci Brannan chipped in 10. Sophomore Karlie Davis was close behind with nine points. "We've got nine players who know what they're doing," Roesch said. "I figure they're all more than capable, so I think any of our kids can score when they get the opportunity. I think it'll be hard for teams to lock down on one kid." North Greene dipped to 1-1 this season following a 72-32 loss Tuesday at Southwestern High School. Hull led the Lady Spartans with 11 points. The team's season continues at the Waverly Tournament Saturday, where North Greene will open against Springfield Lutheran at 10 a.m. The Lady Spartans will also play Kincaid at 3 p.m. Saturday followed by tournament games against Waverly Monday and Rushville Industry Wednesday, Nov. 27. Greenfield-Northwestern got a game-high 14 points each from Liz Bishop and Megan Bishop, but the Lady Tigers were edged 56-39 by Waverly-Franklin-New Berlin on the road Tuesday. At 0-1 after their season opener, the Lady Tigers host Southwestern at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Northwestern High School. Greenfield-NW will also host North Mac in Palmyra at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
