By CArmeN eNSiNger Greene Prairie Press It’s that time of year again - the time when counties and municipalities must formally adopt the prevailing wage act and something which has been a bone of contention with Greene County Board members for quite some time. By law the board must pass the act. In government contracting, a prevailing wage is defined as the hourly wage, usual benefits and overtime, paid to the majority of workers, laborers, and mechanics within a particular area. For example, if a contractor submits a bid of $10 per hour for a job such as brickwork, and the prevailing wage is set at $15 per hour, by law, the county is forced to pay the $15 per hour regard-

Board member Mark Strang has been the most vocal in his dislike of the act since first getting on the board. “Why do we have to vote on it when it is already a law?” Strang asked. “It doesn’t matter whether we are for it or against it -it has to pass.” Board member Luke Lamb likened it to a form of bullying, and board member Michael McNear agreed. “I think we all know the majority of us are opposed to this form of price fixing and what it does, but we don’t have an option,” McNear said. “We can all say we don’t like it, but when it comes down to it we don’t have a choice.” With board member Charlie Helton absent the motion barely passed by a 3-2 margin with board (See, county board, A2)

County investigating alleged thefts within police departments

The Greene County Sheriff’s Office, with full cooperation of the administration of the White Hall and Roodhouse police departments, has been involved in a month-long investigation involving the theft of prescription medication from a prescription medication storage area within the White Hall Police Department. That theft investigation allegedly involved two dispatchers who were employed by the White Hall Police Department and also with the Roodhouse Police Department. “During the course of that investigation, information was developed which sparked another separate investigation involving a police officer of the Roodhouse Police Department allegedly involved in illegal drug transactions with a dis-

patcher of the Roodhouse Police Department,” Greene County Sheriff Rob McMillen said in a press release late Tuesday evening. “The investigation is ongoing and will hopefully be completed by the end of this week.” No names are being released at this time. “At the conclusion of our investigation, we will submit all reports and evidence to the Greene County States Attorney’s Office for review and determination if criminal charges are warranted,” McMillen said. “These were isolated incidents, and at this point it is not believed the illegal drugs involved in either of these investigations were taken from the White Hall or Roodhouse Police departments evidence storage rooms.”

Two people were seriously injured in a motorcycle accident over the weekend on the Heinold Curve just outside of Carrollton. According to a press release from the Greene County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to a motorcycle accident on Saturday, June 15 at approximately 3:17 p.m. on U.S. 67 just south of County Road 1600N. A 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle being driven northbound on US 67 by Gary L. Hartman, 51, of Jacksonville lost control of his motorcycle while negotiating a curve in the roadway known as Heinold Curve. Hartman had a passenger on his motorcycle, Debra D. Hartman, 51, who has the same address as Mr. Hartman. “Both Mr. Hartman and Ms. Hartman were wearing their helmets at the time of the crash,” Greene County Sheriff Rob McMillen said. Mr. Hartman was transported to Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville by ambulance and Ms. Hartman was airlifted from the scene by Air-Evac and transported to Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. While both riders sustained serious injuries in the accident, the injuries did not appear to be life threatening. The accident remains under investigation and alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the accident.

Carrollton American Legion presented Thomas H. Boyd Memorial Hospital with a check for $1,250 recently as proceeds from a fundraiser – a chicken and pulled pork dinner held at the Brass Door. The presentation was made during a monthly hospital board meeting with American Legion Commander Al Jones and Adjutant Jim Day presenting the check to Hospital CEO Deb Campbell. Day said the Legion did things a

little bit differently this year which resulted in the largest amount of money raised ever. “For the last four or five years, we have held a general fundraiser with the money going to the American Legion treasurer and us,” Day said. “We reviewed the charitable donation but this year it was suggested that we do something a little more specific and pick an organization and hold the fundraiser for that organization and donate the proceeds to them.” Legion members mulled it over and decided this year’s fundraiser would be donated to Boyd Hospital.

decided we would do it as a fundraiser and charge enough to make a little money to put in our treasury which we could give out to various organizations throughout the community.” Day said his father, also named Jim, owned a restaurant in Carrollton and used to be in charge of cooking the roast beef. Another member, Bob Lake and his family, was in charge of procuring the necessary coons for the coon portion of the supper. While coon might have been considered a treat 70 years ago, modern folks tend to frown upon dining on the masked bandit.

“It was finally decided a couple of years ago that we should eliminate the coon aspect of it altogether,” Day said. “So, for the past few years now, we have been serving a chicken and pulled pork dinner.” Day said his only regret was that they couldn’t present the hospital with a check for a million dollars. “It went over quite well and we were pleased with it,” he said. “We would like to thank all of you who are serving on the board or working here at the hospital – this is an important facility and we appreciate you and your service to this community.”

“It was suggested that Thomas H. Boyd Hospital would be a worthy beneficiary and the members agreed,” Day said. “We advertised it as a fundraiser specifically for Boyd Hospital and I have to say we had more success this year than any time previously.” Day said the fundraiser began more than 70 years ago as just a dinner for its members. “Many years ago the American Legion members had a coon and roast beef supper for their members,” Day said. “Around 20 years ago it evolved into a dinner open to the general public and then about 10 years ago we

According to White Hall Fire Chief Garry Sheppard, his department was called out at 10:30 p.m. on the night of May 23 to the home after neighbors spotted the fire. “When we arrived on the scene the fire had a pretty good head start,” Sheppard said in his report of the fire in the June 4 edition of Greene Prairie Press. “Fire was already coming out of the roof and windows when we arrived.” No one was home at the time of the fire and the owner of the home, Jason K. Sprague, was incarcerated in Greene County Jail during the time of the fire. Red flags popped up to lead authorities to suspect arson when it was learned that the utilities to the house had been shut off. The Illinois State Fire Marshal came down and investigated the blaze and determined the fire had been set in at least two different spots. Arson is a Class 2 Felony and both Edwards and Price remain in jail with bond set at $2,500 cash. They are scheduled to be in court for a

Carrollton Farmers Elevator merging with CHS, Inc. By CARMEn EnSInGER Greene Prairie Press Carrollton Farmer’s Elevator has served the grain merchandising and handling needs of farmers in Southwestern Illinois since 1918 and after nearly 100 years, voting members have approved a merger with CHS, Inc. out of Lowder, which is expected to become effective in September. County Board (Continued from A1) members Strang and Lamb voting No. Board members Mike Kiger, Alan Graham and McNear all voted Yes, though reluctantly. Board Chairman Joe Nord announced there were two people interested in being appointed to an opening on the Greenfield Fire Protection District. Both Jeff Wright, who lives south of Rockbridge, and Jim Armold, who lives south of Greenfield, submitted their names for consideration. Nord said he would submit his first choice and if he did not receive a second or he didn’t get the required votes, he would then submit the second name. “I nominate Jeff Wright for the position because he lives down in the Rockbridge area and I like the people on the boards to be scattered out throughout the district,” Nord said. “I don’t want them all from one place.” Alan Graham seconded the motion and it was passed unanimously by the board. The board approved a federal unit price agreement to construct the Palmyra Road overlay at a total cost of $466,493.87. Greene County Highway Superintendent David Marth said the

state’s policy is to run comparison estimates and the county had to be at least 10 percent lower than private contractors, which they were. The construction is supposed to start in a couple weeks. The county did its due diligence by looking at the contract for county finances for the coming year in an effort to get a lower price without much success. The county currently uses Scheffel and Co. “We did some looking around but there are just not a lot of firms that do county stuff,” Finance Chairman Mike McNear said. “We would still like to do some more research down the road, but for now we asked Scheffel to give us a quote for a one-year contract. Instead of a monthly compilation of reports, we asked for a quarterly compilation and allowed them to round it to the dollar instead of to the penny. This is going to cost us about $2,800 less than what we pay right now. The motion was unanimously accepted as was a motion to approve the ILEAS Agreement and Resolution. This is a mutual aid agreement with other communities in case of emergencies such as a tornado or earthquake but extends to many other cases where a department might request mutual aid.

Blessing Hospice seeks better understanding GCEDG holding informational meeting By CARMEN ENSINGER Greene Prairie Press Even though Blessing Hospice and Palliative Care in Carrollton will be celebrating its 21st anniversary serving Greene County, there remains an air of both mystery and misconception about just what they do for the community. Blessing Hospice had a booth set up at the recent Greene County Health Fair in March and it was here that they realized there were misperceptions out there about what they are and what they do. “A lot of the folks I chatted with that day think that Hospice is just for the last few days or weeks of life where it’s really for the last six months,” Marketing and Outreach Coordinator Sarah Cantrell said. “Also, a lot of people still think that hospice is just for cancer where it is actually for any terminal diagnosis for any patient, regardless of age.” But there is also another aspect that is less well known even than hospice – that of palliative care. Palliative care is an area of healthcare that focuses on relieving and preventing the suffering of patients. Unlike hospice care, palliative medicine is for patients in all disease stages, including those undergoing treatment for curable illnesses and those living with chronic diseases, as well as patients who are nearing the end of life. Blessing opened in Carrollton in 1993 and is proud to say it has one of its original employees. “Stacey Eilerman has been with our office almost the entire time,” Cantrell said. “She is such a great source of information.” Barb Foiles is the other nurse in the Carrollton office. Ironically, both Foiles and Eilerman started their careers working with children and are now working in end-of-life care.” Lea Anne Varble, a social worker, has helped several community organizations start up their grief support programs. Joel Lohr, the pastor, worked

in health care for 12 years, then became a pastor and now works on the staff blending both of those career paths. Perhaps the most misunderstood concept of hospice is that by going on hospice one is giving up on life. “Nothing could be farther from the truth,” Cantrell said. “Just the opposite – choosing hospice means choosing to add life to the remaining days rather than adding days to life.” Trained medical professionals monitor the patient’s condition regularly. “This allows the patient and their loved ones to refocus their energy and attention away from spending precious time in hospitals and doctor’s offices undergoing treatments to spending that time as quality time, together at home, enjoying the remaining days,” Cantrell said. Remaining at home is one of the biggest benefits of hospice. The patient receives medical care, but is not required to be hospitalized to receive such care. “One goal of hospice care is to keep a patient out of the hospital and in the comfort of their own home,” Cantrell said. “The patient may live in their own home or in the home of a loved one, as long as the home is within the region covered.” However, they can also provide care if a patient is in a nursing home. Another goal is to keep a patient as comfortable as possible. “The hospice team works with the patient and their physician to control the pain and symptoms related to the terminal illness,” Cantrell said. “It might be necessary to stop or change medicines the patient has regularly taken. This is done only to insure the patient gets the highest level of pain and symptom control.” Last but not least, hospice is not just for patients suffering from some form of terminal cancer. “Fewer than 50 percent of our patients have cancer,” Cantrell said. “Any medical condition that results in a prognosis of six months or less to live would make a patient eligible for care from hospice.”

While medical professionals are key to hospice care, so are the volunteers as they are also very important and needed. “Volunteers can provide emotional support and practical assistance that will enhance the comfort and quality of life for both the patient and families,” Cantrell said. “This may include sitting at the bedside simply listening and talking with the patient or assisting with life review.” For those patients who have no family the “Bedside Emotional Support Team” or BEST is available to provide comfort and presence at the end stages of life. This requires special training to understand the dying process and to provide the physical presence and support to the patient. “There is always a need for volunteers and Blessing Hospice provides the volunteer training to all volunteers to best prepare them for the psychological, spiritual and emotional dynamics at the end of life,” Cantrell said. “This truly is a rewarding opportunity for the right person.” All is not forgotten when the patient passes on as Blessing holds two memorial events for those left behind to remember their loved ones. for local budding entrepreneurs By CARMEN ENSINGER Greene Prairie Press Greene County residents wanting to start a new entrepreneurial endeavor and need a little funding to get up and running will want to attend an informational meeting at the Greene County Economic Development Group office in Carrollton on June 25 at 6:30 p.m. Last year the GCEDG received a $75,000 grant from the United States Department of Agriculture to promote and foster economic development in Greene County. As a means to accomplish this goal, the GCEDG will develop and maintain a program known as “Developing Rural Entrepreneurial Actions to Mold Enterprises and Resources,” or DREAMER, for short. “With this initiative, both existing and future entrepreneurs and small business owners will have access to local resources that enhance and enable business development and business expansion,” GCEDG Managing Director Jim Mager said. “Individuals interested in starting a business will be

given extensive training and information on what is involved in owning and operating an enterprise.” Through this program, the GCEDG can provide micro-loans up to $15,000, providing the startup entrepreneur meets certain criteria, such as a sound business plan, credit worthiness and participation of a partnering bank. Although not strictly defined, the guideline for the financial structure would be for the entrepreneur to have 10 percent equity, the GCEDG would loan 50 percent and the participating bank would loan 40 percent. “You don’t want to give people a loan who have absolutely none of their own money into the project because what happens is if things get a little tough and they don’t have any of their own money invested, it is too easy for them to just give up,” Mager said. “Banks will never loan somebody money who don’t have some kind of equity position in the project, and we are kind of the same way. You have to ask the question: Well, if you are not willing to risk some of your own resources then why do you think we

ought to?” Owners of existing businesses who would be interested in the program are also encouraged to attend the meeting. Mager said anything from a landscaping business to a daycare center could qualify for one of the microloans. It is hoped the use of this initiative will enable the development of six to seven new businesses and/or expansions. Although original distribution of RBEG funds takes up to five years, the goal of the program will be to facilitate 20 new jobs within the first two years. This will be the second time the GCEDG has tried to stir up an interest in this money from the federal government. “When we first got the grant we did a series of ads, but we didn’t get a lot of responses,” Mager said. “So, what I thought I would do is to have an informational meeting one evening and just see who popped up.” Those interested in taking advantage of this program are encouraged to contact Mager at 618-980-5036 or by email at gcedginc@hotmail.com

Henry “Bud” and Ellen Brinker of Carrollton will observed their 50th wedding anniversary on June 13. Bud and the former Ellen Schulte were wed June 13, 1964 at St. Francis Church in Quincy. Mr. Brinker is the son of the late John and Frances (Rawe) Brinker of Carrollton. Mrs. Brinker is the daughter of the late Bernard and Marguerite (Kemner) Schulte of Quincy. They are the parents of five children, Tony of Rushville, Lori (Steve) Weber and Denise (Ronnie) Hardwick, both of Carrollton and Dennis and Stephen both deceased.

They have seven grandchildren, Haley and Jordan Brinker, Liz and Quinn Weber, Shannon and Matt Peacock and Hannah Hardwick; and one great-grandson, Michael Keene. Bud retired from Greene County Service Company after 33 years and Ellen retired from Greene County Farm Bureau after 36 years. The children are hosting an open house from 2 – 4 pm, on June 22 at St. John’s Church cafeteria, in Carrollton. The couple invite relative and friends to celebrate with them and request that gifts be omitted.

Briccen Wahl

Gervis Rickey Ramsey, age 69 of rural Roodhouse, died Saturday, June 14, 2014 at Boyd Memorial Hospital in Carrollton. He was born Aug. 14, 1944 in Rosedale, the son of Gervis B. and Constance Stiles Ramsey. He married Gisela H. Bayer Sept. 3, 1976 in Schwabach, Germany, and she survives. Also surviving are five daughters, Darlene (Jerry) Cox of Alton, Mary Ann (James) Smith of Brownsville, Texas., Delores Leato of Vernal, Utah., Shirley (Marc) Anter of Stein, Germany, and Tina Ramsey (companion Fred Davidson) of Roodhouse; 18 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four sisters, Vera Greisemer of Lincoln, Calif., Coleen Daniels of White Hall, Joyce Younker of Fairfield, Calif., Vinnie Rymel of Lincoln, Calif.; and two brothers, Alfred Ramsey of Jerseyville and Eric Ramsey of White City, Ore. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren. Rick served in the U.S. Army from Jan. 20, 1965, until his retirement on July 31, 1988. During his 24-year career, he served two and a half years in Vietnam, where he received numerous medals and awards, including the Purple Heart, and Bronze Star Medals. He also served 14 years in Germany, and the balance of his duty in the United States. Upon his retirement, he worked for the Campbell Soup Company and other places in California. He was a life member of the V.F.W. Post 4647 in North Highlands, Calif. He enjoyed fishing and gardening, and attended the House of Restoration in Roodhouse. Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until service time at the funeral home Wednesday. Inturnment will be at Camp Butler Cemetery at Springfield. Memorials may be directed to the family. Condolences may be left on-line at www.airsmanhires.com.

Briccen Eli-Jene Wahl, age 3 of White Hall died Monday, June 9, 2014 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. He was born Feb. 15, 2011, the son of Maggie Long and Nathan Wahl of White Hall. He is survived by his parents, three sisters, Brayleigh Howe of Winchester, Madelyn Wahl and Alivia Wahl both of White Hall, one brother, Owen Baird of Jacksonville, maternal grandparents, Richard and Karen Long of Hillview, paternal grandparents, Crystal and Terry Evans of Carrollton, paternal great grandparents, Earl and Carol Wahl of West Frankford and Nancy Popplewell of White Hal, and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Rusty Popplewell, maternal great-grandparents, Harrison and Rosetta Lon and Donald and Mary Surratt. Funeral services were held at noon Thursday, June 12, 2014 at AirsmanHires Funeral Home in White Hall. Burial followed at Pine Tree Cemetery near Patterson. Shirley Cox Shirley I. Cox, 78, of Winchester died Sunday, June 15, 2014 at her residence. She was born Nov. 30, 1935 in White Hall, the daughter of Charles and Emma White Roberts. She married Kenneth T. Cox Aug. 3, 1954 in Winchester. He preceded her in death Sept. 2, 2010. Surviving are her children, Sharlene Smith, Kenetta (Richard) Gregory,and Sheila (Tim) Brown all of rural Winchester; grandchildren, Miranda Smith, Kenneth (Shanna) Smith, Patrick (Maria) Smith, Tyler (Alicia) Gregory,Eli and Emma Brown; three great -grandchildren, Hunter Smith, Easton Smith,and Addison Gregory; one brother, Donald (Anna May) Roberts of Greenfield. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, David Smith; two brothers, Earl White and Delmar Roberts; and two sisters, Geneva Whewell and Betty Witthuhn. Shirley was a homemaker. She was a member of the New Community Church in Glasgow, former member of the Hillview and current member of the Winchester American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, and the Prairie Land Heritage Museum. She loved to sing at local nursing homes with Glory Bound. She enjoyed painting and spending time with her family and friends. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Daws Family Funeral Home in Winchester with internment at Winchester City Cemetery. Visitation will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday with the family greeting friends from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to New Community Church or the Winchester EMS. James Terpening James Canton Terpening, 81, of Carrollton died at 4:02 p.m. Thursday, June 12, 2014 at St. Louis University Hospital. He was born in Jacksonville on Dec. 12, 1932, the son of the late LeRoy and Mildred Irma (Mundy) Terpening. He graduated from Jersey Township High School in Jerseyville, and with the exception of a few years at Baughmann Manufacturing in Jerseyville, he has been engaged in farming his entire life. He and his wife Carole lovingly raised their three children on their farm northwest of Kane, and have been very active with the Kane Baptist Church where Jim has served as both a deacon and a trustee. He married the former Carole Berry on July 4, 1953 at the Kane Baptist Church, and she survives. Also surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Robin Terpening of Kane and and Kenneth and Barb Terpening of Jerseyville; nine grandchildren and their spouses, James and Julie Jobe of St. Louis, Ben Jobe of St. Louis, Liz and Jon Richards of Nutwood, Joe Terpening of Kane, Jennifer Bryson of Carrollton, Megan Allen of Jerseyville, Ashley and Doug Petty of Kirksville, Mo., Lindsey and Matt Sherrill of Normal, and Nathan and Tara Terpening of Piasa; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Emma Prough of Texas; and a brother-inlaw, Robert Spargo of St. Louis. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Kathryn Sue (Terpening) Corder; and a sister, Marilyn Spargo. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 16 at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Kane Baptist Church with the Rev. The 127th meeting of the White Hall High School Alumni Association met Saturday evening, May 17, 2014, in the commons area of the North Greene High School. President Roger Allen called the meeting to order. He announced that two former teachers at WHHS were present - Dixie Kesinger and JoAnn Price. Two former students of Mrs. Kesinger’s in her early days of teaching were also present: Ruth Hitch and Thea Patterson Spangenberg. He asked all veterans present to stand. He drew the group’s attention to a table of memorabilia involving Mrs. Kesinger, including copies of “The Maroon and Gold Hi Life” page from the White Hall RegisterRepublican. President Allen later read selections from those. The group recited the Pledge of Allegiance and an invocation was given by Kay Fansler Welsh. The meal was catered by Cookie’s North End Cafe. The business session of the meeting was begun with the reading of the minutes of the 2013 meeting by secretary Mary Frances Tunison. The minutes were approved as read. Treasurer Kay Fansler Welsh reported a balance of $1190.75. Second vice-president Judy Hart Goodall presented the following slate for the following year: president, Lois Taylor Coonrod, Class of 1958; first vice president, Judy Hart Goodall, Class of 1956; second vice president, Gary Ahern, Class of 1958; secretary, Mary Frances Tunison, Class of 1959; and treasurer, Kay Fansler Welsh, Class of 1961. The slate was elected by acclimation. There were no class reunions planned though the Class of 1959 had held their 55th year reunion the night before. Secretary Mary Frances Tunison then took the roll call of the classes. The roll call revealed a total attendance of 102, including 84 members and 18 guests. The 86th annual convention featured a “Planting Your Potential” theme inspired by the 2013-2014 Illinois State FFA Officer team. The three-day event celebrates the organization’s annual successes and includes motivational speakers, recognition of individual and chapter achievement, addresses from retiring officers, and election of a new state officer team. Awards presented to Carrollton FFA members include: Cooperative Activities Award Section Winner - The Cooperative Activities Award recognizes FFA chapters, which embrace the cooperative principles within the FFA chapter and its community. Scholarship recipient Travis Smith of Carrollton received the Pike County Farm Bureau Scholarship from John Wood Community College’s Foundation and Agricultural Sciences Department. Travis’ scholarship was one of eight awarded by JWCC to local students based upon their involvement with agriculture through organizations such as Future Farmers of America (FFA), high school leadership roles and achievement academically and within the agriculture community.

Farm Education Program earns Carrollton FFA Farm Credit Grant Farm Credit Illinois recently awarded a community improvement grant in the amount of $250 to Carrollton FFA. The grant enabled the chapter to host an ag day for elementary students in Carrollton on May 16. FFA members wanted to provide education about agriculture to pre-kindergarten through 8th grade students who may not realize the affect agriculture has on their daily

lives. They set up stations in the grade school parking lot so students could rotate and learn about livestock, crops and hybrids, dairy foods, chemical and equipment safety and more. The event was not only educational for the students who attended, but also for the FFA members who coordinated the ag day event and learned to work collaboratively to achieve a common goal.

Carrollton FFA was one of 38 4-H clubs and FFA chapters to receive a community improvement grant from Farm Credit Illinois in 2014. A total of $9,500 in grant funds has been awarded to clubs and chapters making tangible contributions in their communities through implementing an improvement project.

Our responsibility is three fold 1) seize the opportunity (be Jesus to someone each and every day) 2) deliver the message that GOD has put in your heart and 3) invite a response from the person you are reaching out to. If you have been baptized, God equips us with a pure heart that

you may receive the Holy Spirit to help you know what to say to the person you have encountered to spread the Word of Jesus. Our words are empowered by the Holy Spirit. This is the gospel, a simple message of Hope. The pinnacle of Peter’s sermon vs. 36. Jesus is the righteousness of GOD. Walkerville Baptist Church news The day started out rather cool and cloudy, but it ended in a beautiful Father’s Day. All fathers have such a blessing if you even have just one child. The more the more blessings. Our fathers were blessed with a really nice gift for Father’s Day and the church had a really nice gift. We now have a new pastor, which we are all so proud of him and his beautiful talented wife. We all enjoyed the message and the discussion at the end of the service. We welcome all to come and get acquainted with them. We all feel God has truly blessed us. We had fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers and a little father-to-be. We all enjoyed the good fellowship we had. Our prayers with Patty Baldes, who will be at Barnes Hospital today. We pray that everything will go well. Remember Ray and Patty in our prayer list and Richard Pruitt of Eldred. The Long and Wahl family on their loss. They forgot what it was. The question for last week was “What does the Bible say about temptation”? I Cor. 10: 13 and 10: 31 - your God is faithful to make a way. Read both chapters and you will understand better. Question this week is “who gave food to an angel? What was it? How did

the angel react”? In Judges 6: 19, 20, 21. Once you start reading you want to continue. Good reading. The most precious things in life cannot be built by hand or bought by man. The thing we overlook as simple and ordinary and that we take for granted are truly wonderful. What is more wonderful than to see the love in a baby’s eyes. This is really the time of year for sneezing. Read 2 Kings 4: 35. Do you sneeze more than seven times? Think about it. Those who sow tears shall reap joy. Psalms 126. Laughter is the best medicine of life. When you feel like you are drowning in life’s living, don’t worry, you lifeguard walks on water. We have great hopes for Walkerville growth. Come and be a part of success. Help us build a church with great faith and worshipping to our Lord. There is excitement there every Sunday. Where love abounds, God abounds. And God truly is with Walkerville. You can feel the Holy Spirit when you walk in the doors. There are smiles on everyone’s face and a sparkle in their eyes. A message each day that will give you strength to live by. We live in such a troubled world that you need that strength to go through the week ahead. A blessing form God can do wonders. In the Ancient World, people looked at children as a blessing from God. If you could not have children, then you were not blest by God. Manoah knows that his wife wants a child more than anything. They probably even wondered if those rumors were true. Are we cursed? Is God mad at us? What sin have we committed? Look at how he does not discount her story when he hears this amazing thing that is too good to be true. He loves his wife and listens even to the stories he does not understand. #2. Manoah’s wife sees the same angel again and Manoah immediately follows her without question. In fact, the only question is how do we raise this special child that God is blessing us with? To me, fathers, that needs to be our prayer all the time. How do we raise these special blessings God has given us in a way that honors you? Ephesians 6:18 says, “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the

Lord’s people.” #3. Manoah offers hospitality to this angel as a sign of respect and reverence. Sometimes when we do not understand, we tend to discount or get upset or not do it at all. I am finding out in fatherhood that there are so many things over my head. I need the help of the Lord and to submit to his authority. Ephesians 5:1-2 says, “Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” God’s whole plan of setting this boy apart would have been ruined if Manoah and his wife would not have obeyed what the angel said. They were the ones who were to set the example for the boy to later follow. #4. Manoah is very active in this whole process with his wife and will continue to be active in the life of the child they will have. Fathers, we must take an active role in raising our children in a godly manner. And Manoah’s wife respects and loves her husband because of his leadership and devotion. She ran to her husband first because it was going to take both of them to raise this child. They are in this together. After all, this is special child blessed by God. A father’s influence is just as needed in the life of that boy as a mother’s. It was going to take both of their efforts. It is not easy to raise a child. It never really has been. Especially when God tells you this is going to be the leader who will deliver His people. The pressure and stress could be unbearable. That is a big responsibility to raise such a leader. I love here how God gives the same vision to Manoah that he gave to his wife. God wants parents to work as a team. Remember the marriage vows of the two become one. This means in raising children as well. Manoah and his wife realize they have a big part to play in the life of their child. If they do not uphold their end of the bargain, the child will never live up to the leader God has chosen for him to be. They were to be the living examples for this child. Fathers, how are you doing with the gifts God has given us? Are we raising up godly children who are set apart to be leaders for God? 1 Corinthians 11:1 says, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” Our children will follow our lead. We are not called to do it on our own, but we are called to be examples in the faith to our family. If we love God, they will too!

Catholic Daughters of America News The Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court St. Joan #522 opened the June 3rd meeting at the K.C. Hall with the installation of officers for the 2014-2016 term. Carol Nord was the flag bearer. Becky Reed was the CDA banner bearer. They led the officers dressed in the CDA robes into the meeting room as the membership sang a hymn to the Blessed Mother. The membership recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Deacon Charles Thievagt installed Regent Elaine Bugos, Vice Regent Denise Nord, Recording Secretary Alice Massey, Treasurer Mary Helen Isringhausen, Financial Secretary Vi McGuire. God Is Not an Object

And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 3:18

We often talk about God as if He is an object to be contemplated or prayed to and that he resides in a faraway place we call Heaven. But, God is a subject and not an object. That is, God is not an object like a stone or a tree, but is a subject like you or I who is capable of experience and indeed capable of the kind of inter-subjective experience that we have with others which we call relationships. The reason that it is wrong to stare at others or to "use" them is because they are subjects, not objects. But, God is a special sort of subject in that He is everywhere (omnipresent) and yet not concrete and tangible in the way that human subjects are. Therefore, we cannot know God in the direct way that we know our fellow human beings. How people know God is different for everyone. Some know Him through His creation while others know Him through prayer and meditation. Still others may know Him through their work with the poor and unfortunate, while others will see Him in His representatives in their churches, synagogues and mosques. However you see and know God, be aware that He loves you and cares for you and wants you to be happy. - Christopher Simon

Area squads put in summer work Flames win tournament

Four girls from Carrollton are members of the Flames Fastpitch softball team, which took first place at the recent Trenton Booster Bash after going 7-0 through tournament. Lady Hawks senior-to-be Madison Mountain pitched three of the seven games. The Flames team consists of girls from Carrollton, Alton, Gillespie, Belleville and O'Fallon.
