White Hall man shot in home By CArmeN eNSiNger Greene Prairie Press On Tuesday, the Greene County Sheriff’s Department identified the man who was shot in his rural White Hall home on Sunday as John C. Early, age 60. On Sunday, July 13, at approximately 2:52 p.m. the Greene County Sheriff’s Department responded to a rural White Hall address to investigate a report of a person being shot with a firearm. “When deputies arrived it was learned that a 60-year-old male resident of the home had sustained a single gunshot wound to the chest area,” Greene County Sheriff Rob McMillen said in a report issued Monday. “The male subject had life-threatening injuries and was unconscious and unresponsive at the scene. A female person, with whom the victim shared the residence, was present in the home when the incident occurred. The victim, later identified as Early,
Spencer Farm designated Sesquicentennial Farm By CArmeN eNSiNger Greene Prairie Press A farm in Roodhouse has been designated a Sesquicentennial Farm by the Illinois Department of Agriculture. The farm is owned by Spencer’s Farm on Martin’s Prairie, LLC. To qualify as a Sesquientennial Farm, the property must be owned by a straight or collateral line of descendants for at least 150 years. The Spencer family received this historical distinction to their farm after they applied for the designation and were approved. “I am pleased to be able to recognize the Spencer family,” Agriculture Director Robert F. Flider said. “This designation honors them today and their ancestors of yesterday who labored through prosperity and adversity to maintain their family farm. The Sesquicentennial Farm program helps to reinforce that family farming remains a viable entity in Illinois agriculture.” The program began in 2000 and recipients receive outdoor display signage and a certificate signed by the governor and director of agriculture. Marilyn Lunneman, a descendant of the family, provided historical data related to the farm. John and Holly Martin and their children migrated from Logan County, Ky., to northeastern Greene County in the summer of 1834 and settled in an area that, to this day, is known as Martin’s Prairie community. “Between 1834 and 1854, John and seven of his 13 children had acquired in excess of 640 acres of land, even after they had donated property for Martin’s Prairie School, cemetery and Baptist church,” Lunneman said. “While the school is no longer in
existence, both the church and cemetery are an integral part of today’s Martin’s Prairie community.” The 40-acre tract of land, southwest of the property, transferred to the church was acquired by John’s third born son, Josiah. This tract of land was certified as an Illinois Centennial Farm in 1972 and remains in the family today. With an ever-expanding family, additional rooms were added onto the original cabin in 1902. “The original cabin foundation can still be seen and serves as a border for a memorial garden to the family. The original barn, constructed with wooden pegs, was sided in 1997,” Lunneman said. In 1993, Lucile Spencer, the widow of Glenn Spencer, acquired Ralph’s family’s ownership interest. In 2005, Glenn and Lucile’s children, Bill and Carilyn Spencer, Gary and Carol Ann (Spencer) Lancaster, G. Richard and Donna Spencer, Robert and Cathy Spencer and Ron and Marilyn Spencer Lunneman became owners of the heritage farm property. “In 2008 we transferred our full interest in the property into the Spencer’s Farm on Martin’s Prairie, LLC, of which we are the current shareholders,” Lunneman said. “The fields have been planted in soybeans, corn and wheat for 175 years by members of the same family.” Eight generations of family members have worked the land, enjoyed family gatherings and watched sunrises and sunsets from the same vantage point. “It would be great for another eight generations to experience the beauty of this land before another 175 years pass,” Lunneman said.

Huge tract of farmland on auction block July 30 By CArmeN eNSiNger Greene Prairie Press
One of the largest sales of land in Greene County is expected to take place on July 30. Approximately 1,342 acres of contiguous Illinois farmland will sell
relatively few contiguous farms of this size and quality being sold at auction,” Kenny Schum, vice president of Murray Wise Associates, said. The auction will be structured so that bidders may bid on any combination of tracts or on the property as an entirety.
“This is a major opportunity for either area farmers or for investors because there have been relatively few contiguous farms of this size and quality being sold at auction .”

The Greene County land, 92 percent of which is tillable, is being offered in nine tracts with eight farmland tracts ranging from 64 acres to 302 acres. It is located along County Road 350 East (River Road), approximately six miles north of Eldred. Also included in the auction is a five-acre building site with multiple grain and equipment storage facilities. “This is a major opportunity for either area farmers or for investors because there have been
“Because the land is contiguous, I wouldn’t be surprised to see one buyer for all of this property, or we could have as many as nine different buyers,” Schum said. “I believe this size property will attract the interest of investors from outside the area, but it’s equally attractive to local operators who may wish to have one or two of these tracts to farm with their existing equipment.” The auction will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Carrollton and will begin at 1 p.m. on July 30.

The Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigative Unit was summoned to the scene to assist the sheriff’s department in processing the scene and in the collection of evidence. “The investigation and the evidence collected at the scene hopefully will provide us with details as to how the victim was shot; whether or not it was a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” McMillen said. “No arrests have been made in the case and once the investigation is complete a full review of the reports will be made to determine if any charges will be filed.” Officers from the White Hall and Roodhouse police departments also assisted at the scene. The White Hall Fire Department First Responders Unit responded to the scene to assist the Greene County Ambulance Service.

This year’s corn yield may reach historic levels, but area farmers’ profits may not indicate such. Many experts are in agreement the corn production outlook throughout the region is very promising. Mike Roegge of the University of Illinois’ Pike County Extension office said, judging by appearance and conditions, the area is set to have record harvests. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen in 30 years corn look as good over such a broad geographic range as I have this year,” Roegge said. “Corn here has been pollinating here for the last two weeks under ideal conditions.” Common problems such as moisture deficiencies on hill sides, or flooding in lowlands, are having minimal impact this year. A couple inches of rain in the coming weeks, and this year’s corn yield is all but guaranteed to be tremendous, Roegge said. But, even with a bumper crop, farmers may be turning to their revenue insurance coverage. Dave Lewis, manager of TriCounty FS in Jerseyville, said everything about this growing season has been ideal, including the planting, emergence, field population and lack of stress on the plants. “Things have been pretty good from the production standpoint, and I think what’s happened in the markets C

is the traders know that, too,” Lewis said. The price of September corn, according to USDA Chicago Terminal, dropped for the tenth consecutive day to $3.75 just before

University of Illinois’ Pike County Extension office noon Monday. It is the first time since the 2009/2010 marketing year corn has dropped below $4 per bushel, according to farmdoc.illinois.edu, a site maintained by U of I. For many farmers, breaking even this year may be difficult when the price dips as low as it has, both Roegge and Lewis said. But, Roegge said coming off nearly five years of historic highs in the corn market, farmers should be in a position to withstand a dip in revenue. “This year’s going to be kind of a kick in the belt, and we’re not going to make as much money. But, there’s a lot of cash reserve that a lot of these
guys have put in their billfolds,” Roegge said. “It’s not going to be the fallout of agriculture that you might think.” He said some farmers may choose to store their corn in hopes the prices will bounce back to the $6-$7 range. Though farmers may be looking at lower profits this year, Lewis said the most basic of economic principles are at play, starting with supply and demand. According the June crop report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more acres of corn were planted than initially anticipated, so the supply is higher. Lewis said when corn was selling for more than $7 per bushel, buyers adjusted their practices, which resulted in a decreased demand for corn. “When corn is $7 or $8 a bushel, people figure out how to get by with a little less of it,” he said. “There was a liquidation of beef herds and hog herds had problems. That’s why meat’s high at the grocery counter.” Lewis said buyers – such as feed and ethanol producers – had to absorb the blow of high corn prices over the past couple years, which impacted their bottom lines. So, the low price per bushel this year should help even the system out, he said. “It just takes a year or two for that stuff to all cycle through,” Lewis said. “With these lower prices, it may take a while, but it will help build demand back up. Demand got hammered when that price got so high.”

Carrollton chickens almost out of the frying pan By CARMEN ENSINGER Greene Prairie Press Against the advice of the city attorney and police chief, the Carrollton City Council plans to entertain an amendment to its animal ordinance which would allow residents within the city limits to own chickens. The city ordinance banning both chickens and rabbits within the city limits has been on the books since 1987, but the ordinance has never been enforced. Roy Becker and his family have had chickens in Carrollton for more than 60 years, and even one of the city’s own police officers owned chickens at the time the controversy began. After receiving permission from the former chief of police that it was OK to have a certain number of chickens, resident Dr. August Adams fenced in the vacant lot next to his house to hold around six chickens. He was later told there is an ordinance against having chickens in the city limits. He took the matter to the council and rallied up other chicken owners in Carrollton, of which there are quite a few. Mayor David Stendeback more or less told the current owners of chickens they could keep up to five hens but no roosters and the issued died down for a couple months. But when Alderman Joe Harness pointed out the city should either abide by its ordinance, meaning no chickens, or amend this ordinance, the issue was brought to the forefront again. At the last meeting there were around 30 people packed into the council room after it was learned the council, at the previous meeting, was intending to send a letter to everyone who owned chickens giving them 30 days to get rid of them or face fines. City Attorney Anne Clough said that even if the council amended the ordinance to allow chickens, the city has a zoning ordinance which states any farm animals must be 200 feet from the neighbor’s property line.
Alderman Tom Wilson pointed out very few lots in Carrollton are more 200 feet in length. Dr. Adams presented the city council with a copy of the city ordinance in Alton, which does allow, with limitations, the keeping of chickens. Godfrey, Jerseyville and many other communities allow chickens for personal use of eggs and keeping as pets. Sam Cox, who also has chickens, attended the meeting and said he would be happy to abide by any rules the council had regarding chickens. The copies of ordinances regarding chickens in Alton and Godfrey could easily be applied, or even tweaked, to Carrollton without much effort. He also said he would be OK with obtaining a yearly permit for keeping the chickens, as would the other fowl-friendly residents. Wilson asked Clough if the city currently requires permits for dogs and cats residing within the city. “No, we don’t, and people aren’t allowed, if they are a breeder, to have more than two or three litters a year in the city – they have limitations,” she said. “I just don’t know where you stop if we start. Some issues I have with them are if you are going to be selling eggs you are supposed to have a business permit. So anybody that is doing that is violating that code. Chickens are not pets – there is nothing about them that makes them pets.” Mindy Baumann, whose daughter is a member of 4-H and would like to be able to have chickens as pets, disagreed. “There is a lovely website called MyPetChicken.com and yes, they are considered pets,” she said. “We don’t have any chickens now because we are waiting for this to be straightened out, but my daughter has picked out five different breeds of chickens she wants to get and has already given ‘her girls’ names. So they can be considered a pet.” Clough wasn’t swayed with the argument.

square footage should be allowed per chicken and no commercial sale of eggs. “Again, this is just my version of this and I’ve been thinking about this since last year,” Wilson said. Chief Kallal still objected and directed a question to Dr. Adams. “I live here in town so let me ask you this – three months from now someone who lives next to you lets their grass grow along with three or four other people, and they get 10 people to come up here and want that (weed) ordinance changed, saying they shouldn’t have to mow their yard – it is their yard and they can let it grow however they want,” Kallal said. “So you are telling me in the future we should change this ordinance for them because you people go it so we should change it for them, too?” Kallal went on. “I am speaking as not the chief – but this is your opinion,” he said. “You think that we should have chickens. There is an ordinance that says we shouldn’t. So, like I said, if we get 10 people come up here or even 20 people who go ‘we want to burn our leaves’ – so you are saying we should change it?” Dr. Adams said basically that was like comparing apples to oranges regarding the weeds. “Some cities allow chickens,” he said. “But all cities say you have to keep your grass at a certain level. You can’t even compare those two things.” Once the ordinance is drawn up, the council could have a first reading which would give the public time to know what the change is going to be on the ordinance and give them the opportunity to voice their opinion. It could then be passed at the following meeting after a second reading. Wilson will be proposing an amendment to the ordinance at the July 16 meeting.

“I think we have to focus on what is in the best interest of the entire population of our city and not just 10 people that want chickens,” Clough said. “That’s not even 10 percent of the population.” Cox pointed out that the 270 signatures on the petition presented to the council at the last meeting was 10 percent of the population, and are OK with chickens. It was also pointed out at the last meeting that there has never been a single complaint about a resident’s chickens filed in the city. Baumann said she researched the city’s ordinance and found it was adopted because of a problem created by rabbit owners, which could explain why the chicken part of the ordinance has never been enforced. Wilson said he had a problem having an ordinance on the books and not enforcing it. “I think enforcement is going to be where there is a complaint, because I don’t see Kenny (Police Chief Kenny Kallal, husband of city attorney Anne Clough) and his men going around town, driving up and down the alley counting chickens,” he said. “That is not the way we want you to spend your time.” Chief Kallal said his men had done that the day before the meeting. Clough said allowing chicken might open a can of worms for the city. “What if ducks become popular in five years and everybody wants ducks, and then pretty soon people are back into these pigs and they want them?” she said. “Why is it fair for them not to get theirs?” Wilson said he was going to propose the city enact an ordinance to allow five birds – no roosters - and the owner will have to have written consent from all their adjoining neighbors. The city will also have to determine how close they can be to the property line and how much

Roodhouse approves Prevailing Wage Act By Carmen ensinger Greene Prairie Press Roodhouse Council’s first combination workshop and council meeting turned out to be an uneventful one with two council members absent. Aldermen Charlie Huffines and Garrett Rogers were not able to attend the July 9 meeting. The council approved the replacement of two gas regulators located on the west end of town. According to Mayor Tommy Martin, the regulators are more than 20 years old. “Last winter, when the gas line was under pressure, one was leaking really bad,” Martin said. “The other one we are using now will also leak when under high volume, so our engineers recommended replacing the worst one this summer and the
other one next summer.” Alderwoman Barb Alred asked if the city would realize any significant savings if they were both replaced now. Replacing both would save the city approximately $1,000 so it was decided to replace both. The council discussed briefly the purchase of a new zero-turn mower for use within the city, but no action was taken on the motion. The current mower is more than 10 years old and the city is looking into updating. A decision is expected to be made at the July 23 meeting. Council members approved the first reading of the Prevailing Wage ordinance along with giving their approval that Mayor Tommy Martin and Everett Schofield could attend the IPEA meeting. The only cost to the city would be the reimbursement for mileage.

medical marijuana farms on mind of local legislators By BoB Crossen Greene Prairie Press Local municipalities in the area have been proactive in their approach toward medical marijuana farms. The Barry City Council in Pike County approved an ordinance allowing the cultivation of medical cannabis in the city. Lance Kendrick, Barry city administrator, said the council held an open forum regarding such an ordinance where it received support from the public to allow for a marijuana farm. “If someone were to want to bring a site to Barry, our ordinance would allow it,” Kendrick said. “We’re just taking the preliminary measures that we need to. If someone were to give us a proposal, we would be ready.” Growing marijuana requires a lot of physical labor to plant, cultivate and harvest the plant before it is sold wholesale to dispensaries, which would be authorized to sell to medical marijuana patients. According to the Medical
Cannabis Pilot Program Act signed into law by Gov. Pat Quinn Aug. 1, 2013, there will be only 22 cultivation centers in the state, one for each Illinois State Police district. Applications will be prepared and reviewed by the Illinois Department of Agriculture, and each facility will have a video surveillance stream sent directly to the ISP district office. Barry falls into District 20 of the Illinois State Police and if a company interested in cultivating marijuana in Barry were to apply for a cultivation license, the business would be fighting for one against applicants in Adams and Schuyler counties. Kendrick said the council wanted to keep its options open for the farm because it could benefit the area. “If for some reason one of these facilities was to locate here, I think it would be good for the community as far as creating some jobs,” Kendrick said. He said people came to the public hearings voicing their support
for the ordinance, adding its adoption was smooth. “They had questions. There wasn’t anybody that was adamantly against it,” Kendrick said. “Some of the testimonies they’ve given out here recently of course on the medical side sway people a little bit. It’s not like it’s going to be a legalized thing where any shop can sell it.” Medical marijuana will be grown somewhere within each ISP district, and municipalities like Barry and Jersey County have taken actions to increase the chances of the farms establishing in their respective region of the district. The Jersey County Board approved to a letter of support for Scientific Growers Incorporated, a local company – run by the Shourd family – vying for a cultivation license, during a regular meeting July 7. Board Member Jeff Ferguson said the county board should encourage those seeking to bring new businesses to Jersey County because new jobs are needed for people in the area.
“I think it’s a great thing that we support the Shourds in their effort or anybody that wants to bring jobs to the county,” Ferguson said during a regular meeting of the county board July 7. “[Medical marijuana is] going to be grown somewhere.” John Shourd, Scientific Growers Inc. representative, said he expects the business to hire around 30 employees with the potential for the business to grow and require additional workers. The applications for cultivation licenses have not yet been finalized, but rather are tied up in the Joint Committee for Administrative Rules. According to the Illinois Department of Agriculture website, until the administrative rules regarding the application are approved by the committee, no applications may be made. The JCAR was expected to vote on the rules during a meeting July 15, which could be a major step toward opening the application process to potential cultivation companies like Scientific Growers Incorporated.

The Engel Farm will be the site for two Hummingbird Festivals scheduled for Thursday, July 17 from 4 to 7 p.m. and Sunday, August 17, 1 to 4 p.m. Scores of hummingbirds are expected to be present to “wow” Festival visitors. Foundation making major strides Thomas H. Boyd Memorial Foundation has been the main fundraising entity of Boyd Healthcare Services for many years, but the Foundation has officially hit its stride in 2014. The fiscal year started off for Boyd Foundation with a letter writing campaign (at 2013-calendar-yearend), which produced almost $10,000 through generous individual contributions from the community. In the spring quarter, there was a spaghetti dinner, raffle and drawing held on April Fools’ Day. The ticket sales for drawing, again, profited almost $10,000 after many of the winning ticket owners returned their winnings as a donation. At the same event, Foundation made a donation of all raffle and dinner profits to the Gas Cards for Cancer fund. Gas Cards for Cancer is administered through the Foundation and offers monthly gift cards to pay for cancer patients traveling great distances for treatment. Since its inception, the program has given over $20,000 to Greene County residents and has grown to also cover Calhoun County. At the end of 2013, Foundation received a historic home in White Hall as a donation from the Eastham Estate. The house, located at 261 West Bridgeport, was sold at an auction in May of 2014. The house netted the Foundation $30,000, which was the Foundation’s largest donation ever received. As the fiscal year rolls on, Foundation is looking to
up the ante with their annual “Wine Gala” event – What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas. The event will be a little different in 2014 from previous years; this year the event will include a full dinner, entertainment by Elvis Himselvis, a silent auction and plenty of wine and beer for tasting throughout the evening. The event will take place at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Carrollton on Sunday, July 20, 2014. The Foundation is operated by a Board of Directors and solely benefits Boyd Healthcare Services. The board has not decided what project(s) or area the 2014 donations will benefit yet, but Hospital Board of Directors, Foundation Board of Directors, and C.E.O. Deborah Campbell have looked at many current options. One thing is for sure, the Foundation Board Members are very grateful for the wonderful participation and giving spirit of Greene County Residents! Giving to Thomas H. Boyd Memorial Foundation helps ensure quality healthcare and advanced technology is available in Greene County now and for years to come. For more information on donating to Thomas H. Boyd Memorial Foundation, Gas Cards for Cancer, or information about attending the Wine Gala, please call Sarah Schmidt, Community Relations Director for Boyd Healthcare Services at (217)942-6946 or email sschmidt@boydhcs.org.

Greenfield Lions announce Pride of Greenfield winners By Carmen ensinger Greene Prairie Press The Greenfield Lions Club takes pride in its community, and it is with this in mind that the implemented the “Pride of Greenfield” award two years ago. Several businesses have been given the honor in the past, and in June the Lions Club awarded the honor to Gable Pharmacy. A landmark on the Greenfield Square, Jim Gable bought and remodeled the present location of the pharmacy in 2002. “We decided to keep the two show windows because of the history and tradition they had for the
many stores which had previously used them,” Gable said. “It took a lot of work to make them what they once were, but I think it was worth it.” Gable said his pharmacy technician, Tish Leach, came up with most of the ideas and articles for the windows, Gable said. “She is very creative and tries to decorate them based on the present holiday and time of the year,” he said. “Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving are easy ones to do, but her more creative ones have been for Greenfield High School football, summer fun and St. Louis Cardinal baseball.” The award is not limited to busi-

nesses and in July, the Lions awarded the Pride of Greenfield distinction to Steve and Jennifer Hopper who live at 609 Walnut Street. “We selected this property due to the quality of care the Hoppers have given to landscaping and the overall care and appearance of the home,” Lions Club member John Thien said. “The home was built in the early 1900s and it demonstrates a pride of ownership and community and it has served as a ‘Kodak Moment’ for many high school prom pictures along with many requests to use the lawn for wedding pictures over the years.”

Why Pay Retail When You Can Shop Resale? “Treasures from your Attic to ours”
“The Magic Glove” myth? It gives the believer confidence out of this world and I have evidence to prove it. Just ask Louise Grub Walkington or her sister Sandy. Dale’s railroad job was in Rockbridge, so we were living there. Les and Phyllis Sample had a food and clothing store in the Bruner building. Mornings they were not busy, so in route to Jericho school I stopped. Men’s leather work gloves and blue jeans were the special of the day - I invested! During the day there was a lull. I asked Mary Williams and Nada King to take the Wishing Basket to my car and bring in my purchases. The treats for each student were Hershey bards. Then I had my idea. One pair of gloves I deliberately dropped on the floor. Darrel Shafer picked them up for me. I thanked him and told him they were Magic Gloves and explained if anything were hard to do - put them on while doing it. The reason he received on hundred in spelling was not the gloves - he studied while wearing. J.B. Smith threw the ball over the house and jumped for joy. Mary Love Hammon jumped with pain; she cracked a rib! A pulley is a wheel over which a rope or belt is passed for the purpose of transmitting energy and doing work. Quote world Book Encyclopedia. Those wells in Bible Times were plenty deep. I wonder when our Lord Jesus came upon the woman at the well - did she have the use of a pulley? When I was a little girl we had our well at the foot of a hill. Dad built a concrete platform around it with a massive tile (from White Hall) in the middle. The pulley was attached to a framework that he constructed of wood. The rope was hung and came from Alton. For Grandma Jennings, dad built a “Wishing Well” house. To me the pulley seemed to have been an iron wheel similar to the ones on a garden plow, only smaller. There’s a picture in my photo albums of cousins, Lawrence, Howard, Homer McCollum and John Jennings standing by “The Well”. Uncle George Jennings had cut their hair. They each wore a white cap that my dad had bought at “The Model” from Mr. Claude Hamilton. Jim and Beth Fields and children enjoyed 4th of July in Greenfield with Debbi and sister Beth fields. Jim barbequed. ‘Til next time!

Rev. Bill Martin celebrates 90th birthday Rev. Bill Martin will observe his 90th birthday on July 24. He was born in White Hall on July 24, 1924, the son of Horace and Sarah Wells Martin. He married Vera Myers on April 24, 1945, and she died in 2002. Bill is the father of three children, Barry( Kathy) deceased, Randy (Diana) of Springfield and Kathy (Jeff Baise) of Greenfield. He has five grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. He will celebrate with his family on July 20. He would enjoy receiving cards, which may be sent to him at 115 N. Carr, White Hall, IL 62092.
GREENFIELD NEWS Being tired of morning cooking shows, I flipped my remote to channel 9 and discovered the Science Club that I nicknamed “The Critters”. In each one you can see yourself and friends at the age of ten. The tree house they had constructed was at least thirty feet in the air would have been any parent’s nightmare. There was no evidence of how they could climb up and down, but it brought to mind the tree house that Dale and my dad constructed under the umbrella shaped elm tree that stood in our backyard until “The big blow of 1983”. The white oak four-foot by eightfoot platform floor set firmly braced on a white oak foundation. The tree house was the center of many activities. Our American flag played an important part in the daily fun times. Pretend was the important game. It had invisible wings, with invisible wheels, plus an invisible motor! Nearby at Grandpa Nile’s and Grandma Carrie’s there was a “stick horse stable”. Whether the tree house became a pontoon boat on Wall Lake in Minnesota or Uncle Elmer’s machine shop in California, Rexie dog and Zorro, the black Labrador, lay in the grass nearby. Recently Amelia Burger attended the visitation of Gloria Wolford held at the Heinz Funeral Home in Carlinville. Gloria and her husband, Jack, were members of the Faith Bible Church in Greenfield. In the Boy Scouts - Logan Fields has advanced to the Wolf Pack. Dani Fields will be advancing to Junior in Girl Scouts. They are the children of Jim and Beth Fields. They reside in Jerseyville. What is most outstanding 4th of July celebration in your life? My sister Mel and I had recovered from Whooping Cough, but coughed now and then. Dad and mother took us to Whiteside Park in White Hall, where we were joined by Harry and Grace Piper and their daughter, Louise. Sister, Louise and I played on the bandstand with other children. Dad had made arrangements with a cousin to fry chicken, potato salad and hot coffee; we three girls had orange pop because it fizzed out our noses. We rode the Ferris Wheel. When we “grew up” Louise married Mick Waltrip - they were our neighbors. She selected me to assist her with Uncle Homer and Aunt Nancy’s 50th wedding anniversary. I still have the thank-you card and handkerchief from dear Aunt Nancy - a lovely Southern Belle. How many of you remember

Sectarian Violence and True Religion The history of organized religion is filled with what can only be described as sectarian or partisan violence. There have been disagreements from the beginning of Christianity over what should constitute the correct form of both practice and belief. And these disagreements are only natural: when finite, fallible human beings try to determine what their infinite, infallible God expects of them, there is going to be disagreement. But, wise men and women should realize this and not let these disagreements turn to armed conflict and bloodshed. Sadly, this sort of religious violence has been all too common. Catholics and Protestants waged a series of wars for much of the 16th and 17th century. Shia and Sunni Muslims have waged war against each other for centuries, and of course there seems to be no end in sight to the violence which Muslims and Jews perpetrate against each other in the Mid-East. This is most unfortunate, since we all claim to believe in a loving and merciful God who abhors violence and the spilling of innocent blood. We should pray for peace among all of God's children and do what we can in our lives to foster a spirit of religious unity. - Christopher Simon
For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body, whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free, and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

Calvary Baptist Church Sunday, July 13. Bro. Brad welcomed everyone and led the congregation in singing of hymns. Sunday school report by Sis. Mary. Announcements: July 16, 6 p.m. Monthly business meeting; July 27, Potluck after morning services. Aug. 22-23 Calvary will host Sandy Creek Annual Meeting. No children’s Church today. Today is a special day at Calvary Church, as we are licensing Johnny Renken to preach. His uncle Sonny Renken is bringing the message. Johnny has stepped up to his calling to be a preacher. God has chosen Johnny to do his work. We are to uplift him in prayer every day. He does not walk alone. Isaiah 6-8. The voice of the Lord said, “Whom shall I
send, and who will go for us.” Johnny has stepped up and said, “here I am send me.” Johnny became a minister when he said send me. There comes a time when we must turn our life over to God. Matthew 14: 28-31. Keep your eye on Jesus or you will sink. You can’t save people, but Jesus can. Proverbs 3: 5, 6. Trust the Lord to lead you in all you do. Isaiah 40-31. Wait upon the Lord. It is all about Jesus’ time, not our time. You can’t pull people to the altar, but Jesus can do all things. I Timothy 4: 12. a preacher’s job is to tell others about Jesus. Fight the good fight, keep your eye on the Lord. Greater is he that is in us than any other thing. Joshua 24-15. As for me and my house, we
will serve the Lord. One good thing when we get to heaven, no more devil. He closed in prayer. Please pray for our country and our leaders, all those who have lost loved ones, those in nursing homes and hospitals, the sick, the lost, traveling mercies, our troops and their families and one another. Times of services: Sunday school, 9:30 a.m.; Sunday morning worship, 10:30 a.m.; Sunday evening service, 7 p.m.; Tuesday evening Bible Study, 7 p.m.; and Wednesday evening Prayer and Bible study, 7 p.m. Johnny Renken will be preaching at Calvary next Sunday.
Walkerville Baptist Church news Rev, David Slagel, Pastor 217-473-4110 We were all welcomed by Bro. David Slagle and his wife Judy. Their phone number is 217-4734110. They are so pleased at the phone calls they have gotten. Feel free to call them anytime of day or night. We had a small crowd, but we were really blessed with a new visitor and we know the spirit filled his heart and he felt most welcome. We were really blessed with a good message from 2 Cor. 5:17, Acts 13: 9 and Rom. 1: 16. Paul is so interesting to study. Paul’s name means
little one. Paul’s advice was very good. When he said old things are passed away and all things are made new when we give our lives to God. Paul’s life is such a life that was completely turned around. Even his name was changed. You will learn about Timothy as you study Paul. He was Paul’s right-hand man. Out prayer list is Richard Pruitt of Eldred, Betty Newman (she had a birthday one day last week) it was reported she has now passed 85. Great going Betty! Melanie Mast, Andy Ross, Velma Gillingham, Mary Milner, Vera Sprong, Debbie
Gillis, Ray and Patty Baldes (Patty made it fine at work) Good work Patty! Robert Lawson, Ed Crabtree and Susie Kiefer. We also had an anniversary - Ray and Patty celebrated their 39 anniversary. Keep going, it’s a long way to 50, then 75, but when you get there the time seemed so fast you wonder where it all went. Just a little advance notice - Bro. David and Judy will celebrate their 50 plus anniversary on July 30. Come to church and find out how many.

Turning over a unit when a tenant moves out should take no more than a week.
Simple ways to maximize profits on your investment property Those who have already invested in real estate know how difficult it can be to maintain a property much less improve it, which should be high on an investor's priority list. But improving a property does not have to involve a complete overhaul or any other dramatic changes. In fact, there are several simple ways investors can improve their real estate investments and improve their chances of turning a large profit when they decide to sell a property. n Hire a property management firm. Some real estate investors, especially those new to the business who just purchased an investment and have little money to spare, shy away from hiring a property management firm. But such a company is worth the expense for investors with little time or knowhow with regard to fixing a home. A property management firm will ensure the building is kept in shape, and depending on your agreement with the company, may even take care of cleaning vacant apartments, readying them for showing and renting them to new tenants. Perhaps the biggest advantage to working with an effective property management firm is the likelihood that they will turn over the vacant apartment quickly, ensuring you aren't losing money when tenants move out. n Carefully vet prospective tenants. One of the easiest ways a property can fall into disrepair is to allow bad tenants to move into the building. It's understandable that investors want to get a building occupied as quickly as
possible so they can use tenants' rents to pay for the property. But bad tenants can cause damage to the property, and their behavior might encourage reliable fellow tenants to find a new living situation. When looking to fill a vacancy, establish a minimum income requirement for prospective tenants and ask applicants to produce proof of income and references from past landlords. This increases the chances you will find a respectful tenant who's fully capable of paying their rent on time. n Upgrade appliances. Renters are just as likely to fall in love with curb appeal as buyers are. While there may not be a yard to entice renters if you purchased an apartment complex, curb appeal can apply to an apartment's interior. One of the more notable eye-catchers to prospective renters is updated appliances, especially since appliances may be the only items actually in the apartment when it is shown. Stainless steel appliances provide an instant upgrade over older appliances that may appear dated and are certain to make a strong first impression on prospective renters, many of whom would be willing to pay more in rent for a unit with update appliances. In addition, renters may feel that landlords who took the time and spent the money to upgrade appliances are likely to make a greater effort maintaining the property. Investors can maximize their returns on investment properties in a variety of ways, many of which don't require significant effort.

Advisory: Illinois Conservation Police ask Starved Rock visitors to observe trail closure signs Illinois Conservation Police Officers issued 23 citations to hikers violating restricted areas of Starved Rock State Park over the Fourth of July weekend. Some areas of the park remain closed due to dangerous conditions caused by storms that hit the area a week ago. Hanging limbs and damaged trees could still fall and cause injury. Crews are working as fast as possible to clear downed trees and other debris. Posts and signs have been installed to alert hikers to closed trails. “Help our site staff and Conservation Police Officers keep hikers and other park visitors
“Officers will enforce closures and issue citations to people entering areas that are off-limits. Give our cleanup crews time to do their jobs.

Chief of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police safe by observing signs and other warnings,” said Rafael Gutierrez, Chief of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police. “Officers will enforce closures and issue citations to people entering areas that are off-limits. Give our cleanup crews time to do their jobs.” Strong straight-line winds swept across northern Illinois on July 1, causing widespread damage. The main trail system within the park remains closed. The Visitor Center and Lodge are open during normal business hours.
The trail to Starved Rock remains open as do the Illinois, Ottawa and Kaskaskia Canyon trails at the east end of the park. Trails at nearby Matthiessen State Park are open. Starved Rock is the state’s most visited state park with about two million visits annually.
