who worked for both the Roodhouse and White Hall police departments as dispatchers. Settles is charged with Unlawful Delivery of a Controlled Substance which is a Class 2 felony punishable by 3-7 years in the Department of Corrections. Settles is alleged to have knowingly delivered to another person less than one gram of a substance containing hydrocodone while in his official capacity as a police officer between January and March of 2014. He is also charged with one count of Official Misconduct, which is a Class 3 felony for knowingly performing an act which he knew he was forbidden by law to perform. Both Morrow and Stewart are charged with one count of Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance, a Class 4 felony. Morrow is alleged to have had in her pos-
session less than 15 grams of a substance containing Tramadol, which is a controlled substance. Stewart is alleged to have had in her possession less than 15 grams of a substance containing hydrocodone, a controlled substance. They are also charged with one count of Theft Under $500 for “knowingly exerting unauthorized control over property of City of White Hall, being prescription medication intending to deprive the City of White Hall permanently of the use of the property.” A June 17 press release, Greene County Sheriff Rob McMillen said his department had conducted a month-long investigation, with cooperation from the White Hall and Roodhouse police departments, involving the theft of prescription medication from a prescription medication storage area within the White Hall Police Department, which involved the two dispatchers. During the course of that investigation, information was developed which sparked another separate investigation involving Settles who was allegedly involved in illegal drug transactions. McMillen noted that the illegal drugs involved in both investigations were not taken from the White Hall or Roodhouse police departments evidence storage rooms. According to Chief Kyle Robison, Morrow resigned her position with the Roodhouse Police Department while Settles and Stewart have been placed on paid administrative leave. “Both Settles and Stewart are part of the bargaining unit and we must abide by the correct process agreed by the city of Roodhouse and the bargaining unit,” he said. “Now that the criminal investigation has been turned over to the state’s attorney’s office, I will begin the internal investigation.” Bond was set at $3,500 for Morrow and Stewart and $5,000 for Settles. Both Settles and Stewart turned themselves in to the Greene County Sheriff’s Department on June 27, posted bond and were released. The arrest warrant for Morrow is outstanding.

by CArmeN eNSiNger Greene Prairie Press Greene County Historical and Genealogy Society is in the process of collecting information on military veterans who reside or have resided in Greene County. “We would like to have this information available so we can offer a record of the military service of the county’s veterans,” Historical Society President Steve Black said. “Our goal is to make this information available to those who are doing genealogical and historical research.” To be a part of this effort a veteran can contribute information on his or her service and also include a picture of their choice which will accompany the records. The narrative information should be approximately one or two pages in length and cover the dates of service, branch of the military, locations of assignments, names of units or ships, types of duties performed, and other information they would like to share relating to their service experience.
Information can also be submitted for deceased veterans by any family member or friend. “This will allow the society to collect information on more veterans of the past wars and help to expand the genealogical database,” Black said. “This will be a long-term project and information will continue to be added to the database as received from veterans throughout the county.” This database will include veteran’s information as far back in time as anyone has records to submit. “Information on military service at any time by a Greene County resident is welcome,” Black said. “Historical information on veterans of the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Indian Wars, Mexican War, Civil War, Spanish-American War, Philippine Insurrection, etc., would also add to the historical content of the database.” Information can be submitted in written form or by electronic means to the Greene County Historical Society, P.O. Former Greene County State’s Attorney Matt Goetten once again finds himself a county prosecutor as he takes over the reigns as state’s attorney in Pike County for a few months. Goetten, of rural Carrollton, spent eight years as a prosecutor in Greene County but elected not to seek a third term at the last election while making a bid for a seat in Congress. Goetten, who had been working with the State Appellate Prosecutor’s Office in Springfield, was appointed to the position June 12 during a special session of the Pike County Board. The appointment comes following the abrupt resignation of Carrie Boyd on June 2. The position had to be filled by a Democrat since that was the party elected to the office in the previous election. Goetten said the appointment transpired rather quickly. “I had been working in the county for eight or nine months on special prosecution cases when Carrie Boyd suddenly resigned,” Goetten said. “I was approached by the Pike County Democrats and asked if I would be

County Board chose me because I had the ability to hit the ground running. I was actually already on the ground. With my experience in Greene and as a special prosecutor, I was well situated to step right in and run the office.” But that’s not to say a bid for the seat is entirely unthought of. “Well, my son, Connor, is going to college this year and my daughter, Anja, will be a sophomore, so I’m looking at an empty nest very soon,” Goetten said. “Seriously, I enjoy being a prosecutor and I enjoy the practice of law – I am just trying to keep my options open at the moment.” At the June 12 meeting where Goetten was selected for the interim slot, he assured Pike County board members that he intends to remain a Greene County resident. Now he says his goal is to bring trust back to the office of state's attorney in Pike. “As I stated before, I want to restore public confidence in the office,” he said. “Anytime there is a resignation like the one in Pike County, questions will be swirling about the circumstances. It is important for the public to know the office of the Pike County State’s Attorney is still performing its role in the community.”

After consulting with my agency and confirming that I could take a leave of absence, I told them I would be honored to be considered.” The Democrat Central Committee only threw out two names to Board Chairman Andy Borrowman as possible replacements – Goetten and Brett Irving. Borrowman asked each man to make a brief statement to the board concerning his background, experience, training and availability to take over the office. Irving had served 12 years as state’s attorney in Pike County, yet he lost the appointment by a 5-3 vote of the board while Goetten garnered a 6-2 motion to win the appointment. Goetten will fill the term until the special election in November. The person elected in November will then run in the regular election in November 2016. Goetten said it still too early to say whether he might consider a move to Pike County to run for the position. “At this point I am so busy trying to get up to speed in the new office I have not really considered running,” he said. “My main concern at the moment is to regain the public’s confidence in the office. Carrollton chicken owners peck away at council By CARMEN ENSINGER Greene Prairie Press Carrollton City Council had no idea the can of worms it was opening when it tried to prevent a resident from placing chickens on his property on South Main Street after spending thousands of dollars on a fence and landscaping. The city cited a decades-old ordinance which prevents chickens and rabbits from being kept in town, even though the ordinance has never been enforced. This sparked an outrage among chicken owners over the past few months as the council waivered back and forth with what to do. At the last council meeting, the council decided it would abide by this ordinance and everyone who had chickens in town would have 30 days to get rid of their illegal feathered friends once they were notified with a letter from the chief of police. As a result, around 30 people showed up at the June 25 council meeting in support of keeping chickens in town, despite the council not putting the chicken issue on the agenda for discussion. After a brief closed session entered into to discuss pending litigation, presumably regarding the chickens, the council came back into open session and the audience was allowed to express their opinions. Resident Mark Kangas presented a petition with 270 signatures to the council. “As you can see, people don’t care about the chickens being in the city – it’s not a problem,” Kangas said. “The ones that have concerns are sitting on this council and I want to know why, when you guys are there in a voted-in position and supposed to be taking care of this community. The community says it’s OK, so what is wrong? The prior chief of police had no problem with it.” Kangas said he moved to Carrollton four years ago and knew there was an ordinance against housing chickens within the city limits, but after going and talking to the police chief he was told it was OK. “I went with what he said – no more than two birds per person in your household as long as they are hens, and you can’t sell the meat or eggs,” Kangas said. “You guys have been up here for a long time and you are trying to tell me it was just noticed last year that the ordinance was there. Nobody cared. Something is going on – I don’t know if some-

one has a personal problem with someone else or what. There is plenty of other stuff going on in this town which is against ordinances and you guys are coming after the chickens. It just doesn’t make sense.” Council members were not forthcoming and relied on City Attorney Anne Clough to speak for them. “We are going to stand with our original ordinance that has been there for decades,” she said. “All I can comment is there has been an ordinance for years.” Resident Mike Baumann, who also has chickens, was not satisfied with the answer. “Do you understand why I feel like you guys are playing a game

Photos of service members who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country during the war are being sought. According to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund’s website, vvmf.org, Greene County was home to seven service members who were killed in the line of duty during the Vietnam War. Kangas said the council seemed pretty set in their ways and wanted to go with the status quo, which was to abide by the current ordinance prohibiting chickens, even though that is not what the people want. “We vote you in to voice our words and to listen and be our voice, but we are not getting that,” he said. “I mean this is chickens – they are not hurting anybody. A member of the audience asked what the procedure was to get the ordinance changed and Clough said an alderman would have to sponsor it as an item on the agenda. “You are voted in and we are asking for it,” Kangas said. “We have the signatures of over 10 percent of the community – we just want to know what the problem is with the chickens when the police have not received one single complaint.” Alderman Tom Wilson finally broke council silence. “We have been advised to not speak because of legal issues, but first of all the comments about us not enforcing other ordinances is blatantly untrue,” he said. “Every year the police department goes around and issues citations and makes people clean up their trash. All of this is being addressed and if there is something you see out there which is not right, say it.” One audience member likened the issue to a third grade argument on the playground and said if the council decided to stick with its ordinance banning chickens, then it should quit promoting itself as a farming community and reimburse every chicken owner for their expense for the birds, coops, food, etc. Wilson said he would sponsor the needed amendment to the ordinance at the next meeting. “We will throw it out there, but we have to come up with the things like how many square feet you must have per bird, how many birds you can have, etc.,” he said. “The last comment I will make is we didn’t’ just come up here and say, ‘Hey I got a thing against chickens we are going to ban them.’ This was a process that came to us – we didn’t go looking for it. So I know you are upset, especially the people who have time and money invested in it, but this is not something we went out and looked for.” The chicken committee will hold a meeting on July 8 at 7 p.m. to discuss the issue and the next regular city council meeting is scheduled for July 16.

visited RESA Middle School in Rockford to sign three new pieces of legislation that help increase safety, ensure crisis planning and provide security improvements at all Illinois schools. These actions are part of Gov. Quinn’s agenda to provide a safe learning environment for all Illinois students. “Nothing is more important than keeping our classrooms safe,” Gov. Quinn said. “Preparation and knowledge are part of that curriculum – preparing for emergencies we hope will never occur, and knowing what to do if confronted with a crisis.” “Parents need to have confidence that their children will be safe throughout the school day and kids should be able to focus solely on their studies,” State Schools Superintendent Christopher A. Koch said. “These new laws provide the impetus and resources to make schools safer.” Senate Bill 2710, sponsored by State Senator Bill Cunningham (D-Chicago) and State Representative Lawrence M. Walsh Jr. (D-Elwood), extends a key school safety measure that currently covers public schools to the state’s approximately 1,800 private schools. A law proposed and signed by Governor Quinn last year requires all school districts to conduct an annual safety drill, in conjunction with law enforcement officials, which prepares students for potential shooting situations. That law requires public school districts to do an annual review in light of that drill of each school’s emergency and crisis plans and procedures. Senate Bill 2710 requires that private schools conduct that same annual review of their crisis plans to better protect the 300,000 private school students in Illinois. The legislation is effective immediately. Senate Bill 2934, sponsored by State Senator Steve Stadelman (D-Rockford) and Representative Walsh, makes one of Gov. Quinn’s initiatives to fund school safety improvements an official part of state statutes. Earlier this year the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) awarded $25 million for security improvements to
islation allows this school safety program to continue when funds are available and also adds private K – 12 schools, area vocational centers, regional safe schools and public colleges and universities to the list of eligible schools. The new law is effective immediately. “This is an excellent opportunity to improve local schools and the safety of our children,” Senator Stadelman said. “The safety grants are possible because of the work we have done to ensure that students in K-12 deserve a safe learning environment just like those in higher education.” “I’m proud to work with IEMA, local schools and area vocational schools to make sure when grants become available through IEMA, all entities are qualified and able to apply for these grants to make our schools safer and prepared for any emergency that may arise,” Representative Walsh said. House Bill 5716, sponsored by State Representative Rich Brauer (R-Petersburg) and Senator Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill), allows public school districts to make updated emergency and crisis plans available to first responders, teachers and administrators through electronic devices such as smart phones, tablets and laptops. The legislation is effective Jan. 1, 2015. Gov. Quinn is committed to ensuring school safety across Illinois. As part of his Illinois Jobs Now! construction program, he recently announced $25 million for more than 1,300 projects to enhance security at schools across Illinois. Following the deadly school shooting in Newtown, Conn. in December 2012, Gov. Quinn convened top experts from across the state for a School Safety Summit to develop short- and long-term actions to further strengthen school safety. The summit included school district organizations, law enforcement agencies and state agencies, including IEMA. The Governor also led the charge in passing legislation requiring all Illinois schools to hold active safety drills with local law enforcement to ensure they are as prepared as possible in the event of a shooting incident.

Facts about the Fourth of July of the United States of America, held the first annual commemoration of American independence, and exactly one year later George Washington ordered that all of his soldiers be offered double rations of rum to commemorate the anniversary. In 1781, Massachusetts was the first state to make July 4th an official state holiday, and the day was actually declared a federal holiday by the U.S. Congress in 1870. However, that declaration did not grant a paid holiday to federal employees. That benefit came in 1941, which is why that year is now recognized as the first year when the Fourth of July officially became a federal holiday

IDNR Hunter Education Course scheduled Area residents will have the opportunity to learn basic principles of safe hunting at a free Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) hunter safety course on July 18 and 19, 2014 at the American Legion, 300 Veterans Memorial Parkway in Jerseyville. This class is from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the July 18 and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the July 19. A 1996 state law requires that all hunters born on or after Jan. 1, 1980, successfully complete the hunter education course before they can receive their first hunting license. Participants completing the hunter education course receive a Hunter Education Certification card verifying that they have passed the course of instruction. This will be an excellent opportunity for hunters who need the course in order to qualify for their hunting license, Neil Waters, Volunteer Services Coordinator said. The minimum ten-hour course includes instruction in firearms safety, hunter ethics, treestand safety, safe firearm handling, first aid, survival techniques, laws and regulations. Pre-registration is required and can be done by calling 618-4621181 extension 128. The Fourth of July has been a federal holiday since 1941. Though that may seem like a long time for the country to wait to celebrate the independence it declared in 1776, the tradition of the Fourth of July, often referred to as Independence Day, dates back to the dawn of the American Revolution and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Since then, July 4th has been recognized as the dawn of American independence, and celebrations that included fireworks and parades can be traced back to the 18th century. On July 4, 1777, the city of Philadelphia, which would become the first capital

Carrollton’s Mexican restaurant has a ‘groovy’ new name By CARMEN ENSINGER Greene Prairie Press There is that famous line from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet that goes “What’s in a name?” Well, Carrollton’s newest restaurant, formerly known as The Twisted Taco, found out exactly what’s in a name – a trademark, which belongs to someone else. The Twisted Taco has officially changed its name to The Groovy Taco after it found out a restaurant in Georgia had trademarked the name. The restaurant opened up in October of last year and while the owners, Tracy Camden, Randy Camden and Kelly Camden Bartsch, debated on several different names before settling on The Twisted Taco, it turns out one of those other choices might have been a better choice. “When we chose our name, we did a trademark search for The Twisted Taco and it came up as not taken, but we held off applying for a trademark,” Tracy Camden said. “There was a restaurant in Atlanta, Ga., called Twisted Taco Cantina and Restaurant but we saw no conflict and moved forward with naming our restaurant.” It was only after an NBC Channel 5 news crew in Carrollton reporting on a story stopped in to eat that Camden says a conflict arose. Someone in the restaurant took a picture of the reporter posing with an employee and sent it to the reporter, who in turn put the photo out on Twitter and tagged, the Twisted Taco. However, he accidentally tagged the Twisted Taco in Atlanta. Camden believes that the tag popped up on the Georgia restaurant’s Twitter feed, which prompted attorneys for the Atlanta-based company to contact Carrollton’s Twisted Taco. “We found out that the group in Atlanta had trademarked the two words Twisted Taco, dropped the Cantina and Restaurant from
Illinois College to offer professional development courses for summer and fall
their name and started franchising Twisted Taco restaurants in Georgia with future plans to open restaurants across the United States,” Camden said. “Now we had a conflict. We were contacted by their attorneys and told to change our name and cease our Facebook Page and website for The Twisted Taco, which we complied with.” Now came the task of coming up with a new name. “There are thousands of Mexican restaurants out there, so coming up
“There are thousands of Mexican restaurants out there, so coming up with a fun and catchy name that is not already taken was next to impossible.”
Tracy Camden Owner of Groovy Taco with a fun and catchy name that is not already taken was next to impossible,” Camden said. “But, after much thought it was decided The Twisted Taco would now be known as The Groovy Taco and to prevent ever having to go through this again, we have trademarked this name.” While the name may have changed, the homemade goodness of Camden’s own Mexican recipes has remained the same. “We’ve even added a few new items since we opened,” she said. “Just to name a few, for the bacon lovers out there, we have added a bacon cheeseburger burrito and a chicken, bacon and ranch burrito. For the little ones we now have kid’s meals that come with toys, a drink and a cookie. And, our most

popular new addition is the flatbread taco.” The past couple months the restaurant has gradually been changing its signage from its Facebook page and website to the lettering on the door. “We purposefully kept our logo pretty much intact because it has become a recognizable symbol of our business,” Camden said. “The good news is we now own this name and it will be around forever.” So, one could say in a matter of months, the business went from being “twisted” to being “groovy.” Very soon there will be some groovy new additions. A privacy fence is going up in the back yard to make way for a new outdoor dining area. This space will increase the seating capacity dramatically, when the weather permits. space for a new private gaming lounge with video gaming. “Our customers will be able to play their favorite machines in a discrete, relaxing and comfortable environment,” Camden said. “It will have its own separate entrance, or you can enter from the dining area. Customers will be able to order food and drinks off our main menu and have it delivered to the gaming lounge so that their play is not interrupted.” Camden said they plan to initially offer beer, bottled soft drinks, coffee, cappuccino and snacks as well as Groovy Taco T-shirts and memorabilia. Camden said they hope to have the gaming lounge open by Aug. 1, but the timeline will all depend on how long it takes for the state to complete the process and the gaming operators to do the installation. Illinois College will be offering a one credit hour professional development/elective course on hearing loss in a school setting this summer and a course on enacting science and engineering practices in the classroom during the fall semester. The courses are designed for inservice teachers who are looking to continue their education, as well as an elective course for Illinois College Master of Arts in Education students. The ED 605 Hearing Loss in a School Setting will meet from 1 to 4 p.m. on July 12, 16, 19, 23 and 24. The ED 603 Enacting Science and Engineering Practices in the K-12 Classroom will meet from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on September 11 and 25, October 9 and 23, and December 11. A course costs $200 plus books as needed for teachers wanting to earn Continuing Professional Development Units and $400 plus books as needed for those teachers looking to earn graduate credit. The ED 605 course this summer provides a background in issues related to hearing loss in an educational setting, both from the perspective of students with
hearing loss and their parents, and from that of parents with hearing loss. “The course is designed to give teachers some tools and insight to be able to work with individuals from the hearing loss or deaf communities,” Todd Oberg, director of the Teacher Preparation Program, said. “Any teacher who works with or has worked with someone from these communities could benefit from the course.” This fall, the ED 603 course will address issues around designing and implementing inquiry-based science teaching. “This is geared toward science teachers and those teachers who teach science as part of their teaching curriculum,” Oberg said. “Particularly, it is geared toward teachers looking at implementing or learning how to implement the Science and Engineering portion of the Next Generation Science Standards which is the equivalent of the Common Core Standards for math and English.” For more information on the professional development courses contact Oberg at 217-245-3430 or at toberg@mail.ic.edu.

CHURCH GREENE PRAIRIE PRESS IDNR urges public to leave fireworks displays Amberleigh Wankel on the birth to those who are licensed and trained of their son Henry Roger Sherlock

Barrow Baptist Church news Hello from Barrow Baptist Church and church family. Our pastor is Bro. Gerald Day and our service times are 9:30 a.m. Sunday school, followed by 10:30 a.m. morning worship with nursery service available. On Sunday, June 29 we had 27 attending Sunday school and 34 attending morning worship. Remember our men and women in uniform and the leaders of our nation in your prayers. Others to remember include Keith Forrester, Lucille Seely, Audrey Prather,
Maureen Martin, Connie Sturgeon, Ann Ford, Mike Talkington, Bob Caskey, Blaze Farris, Teri Parker, Amber Gourley, Chuck Roberts, Bill Yerion, Mandy Friedrich, George Rogers, David Stendeback, Larry Minor, Linda Wyatt, Brenda Early and Melvin McGee. Happy birthday wishes go to Dan Seely July 1, Dan Hatcher and Ronnie Beams July 3. Happy anniversary wishes go to Todd & Jodi Carriger July 5 and Bob & Stephanie Krempasky July 7. Congratulations to Ryan and
Wankel, June 27 weighing 6 lbs. 9 oz. Congratulations to Grandpa Dean Wankel. Sunday June 29 was our 5th Sunday hymn sing and talent day. We had several talents displayed, plus sang lots of our favorite hymns. Have a safe and happy 4th of July. That’s all for this week. Be a friend to someone in need.
Walkerville Baptist Church news Rev, David Slagel, Pastor 217-473-4110 We are all proud of our new pastor and invite you all to come and be with us. He is available by phone anytime of day or night if need be. Feel free to call him anytime of the day or night. The weather was hot, but we got by without any storms, but today is to be one of the hottest yet and storms tonight. But the 4th is predicted to be cool and dry. Good! We really do need some cooler weather. Our church services were very good. The message was Romans 16: 17. The questions were answered and the story behind it discussion was very good. The answer to the question “who told angels to wash their feet?” Gen. 19 was Lot. The question for this week is “who ate a fat calf cooked by a witch?” 1 Sam. 28: 24. Read the whole chapter to
understand the witch part. If you have a question you want answered just let one of us know and we will get you an answer. Our prayer list is Patty Baldes (we were so glad to see her back, but a bad time with her new knee and needs lots of prayers), Linda Hallock (we miss you Linda - she needs our prayers), Vera Sprong, Debbie Sprong, Melanie Mast, Doug Meyers (so good to have him back with us), Ed Crabtree, Susie Kiefer, Robert Lawson, Brenda Early, Trish Ford, Ben Malin, and all our church family and all the churches who need pastors, our country. Hope everyone has a happy and safe 4th of July. Remember those who can’t be with us and are defending our country so we can be free. Our pastor and his wife said they had a wet, but very enjoyable vacation. Glad they made it back safe. Remember
that everyone smiles in the same language. It may not be tonight or tomorrow or the next day, but everything is going to be OK. God is in control if we let him. God didn’t promise days without laughter or without sorrow, sun without rain, but he did promise strength for the day, comfort for the tears, and light for the way. The two marks of a Christian are giving and forgiving, for the world knows little about either. Remember at Walkerville there is always someone praying for you. When you feel safe and happy then God has answered their prayer. Come to Walkerville and let us make you feel good in the Lord’s spirit and love from all of us. Jesus loves you and so do we. Work day Wednesday morning at the church if you are available. Fellowship will be fun and you will be blessed. See you Sunday.
Illinois Conservation Police Officer Trainee exam offered July 14-17 The Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police Office of Law Enforcement is seeking qualified applicants to take the written exam for Conservation Police Officer Trainee. The exam will be offered at several Central Management Services (CMS) testing centers throughout the state on July 14 - 17 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each day. Tests will be administered on a walkin basis at Springfield and Chicago testing centers. The Marion, Champaign and Rockford testing centers are by appointment only. Applicants should be aware of the following information: n If applicants have not already submitted a CMS-100 application to
CMS Examining (or applied online), they should be prepared to bring a completed application with them to the assessment center on the day that they anticipate testing. Applicants should not be directed to submit their applications to CMS Examining as our grading section will not be doing pre-qualification screening of applicants. n Applicants seeking a waiver of the college degree requirement under PA 97-0948 and who have not yet established their status with the CMS Veterans Outreach Program should be encouraged to submit their military documentation as soon as possible prior to testing to CMSVOP to establish their status. CMS
will not be providing the “grace period” after testing to allow veterans to establish their medal standing with CMS-VOP as has been done on recent administrations of the CPOT exam. They can still bring their certified military documentation with them when they test but it is to their advantage to establish their status as soon as possible with CMS-VOP. Questions about establishing veteran status should be directed to CMSVOP at (217) 524-1313. For more information about career opportunities with the Illinois Conservation Police, please visit: http:// dnr.state.il.us/law3/career.htm or call Lt. Curt Lewis in the Conservation Police Training Section at (217) 785-8407.

Kindness or Cruelty? Ultimately, there are only two basic motives which animate us, kindness or cruelty. On the side of kindness is everything that unites and uplifts us: the kind or encouraging word, the helping or healing hand, the invitation to join the group and to be a part of the great family of God. On the side of cruelty is everything that divides and debases: the mean or cutting remark, the discouraging word, the clenched fist and the hand which pushes away, the barrier to inclusion which says you aren't welcome here. There is love and there is strife. Love unites; strife divides. Love is kind; strife is cruel. There is no third option here. You cannot be indifferent to the choice between kindness and cruelty. We should pray that we steadfastly choose to be on the side of kindness. - Christopher Simon
I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer it or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is reminding organizations and individuals sponsoring fireworks displays in Illinois to be sure their fireworks vendor has the required state licenses and certificates issued by the IDNR prior to their fireworks show. The Illinois Explosives Act requires that anyone who purchases, possesses, uses, transfers, stores or disposes of explosives, including display fireworks, must have an explosives license and explosives storage certificate issued by the IDNR. Licensing and storage requirements administered by the IDNR do not apply to consumer or personal fireworks (classified as 1.4 explosives) such as roman candles, bottle rockets or firecrackers. “Spectacular, professional fireworks displays are the hallmark of Fourth of July celebrations in many communities statewide,” said IDNR Director Marc Miller. “But these fireworks can be dangerous if not stored and handled
properly. Leave these professional displays to those that are licensed and certified by the state to handle these types of explosives.” The Illinois Explosives Act is administered by the IDNR Office of Mines and Minerals Blasting and Explosives Unit. This unit is staffed by trained and experienced blasting specialists located throughout Illinois. In addition to requiring comprehensive licensing, training and examination for individuals, the law requires that unattended display fireworks and explosives must be stored in an explosives magazine, storage facility or container that is inspected and certified by IDNR. IDNR currently has 1,656 individuals licensed for the use of explosives in Illinois, of which 872 are for the use of display fireworks. There are 791 certified explosives storage magazines in Illinois, which contain nearly 90 million pounds of explosives. Of those storage magazines, 132 are certified specifically for the storage of display fireworks.
Anyone possessing, using, transferring or purchasing display fireworks without a valid IDNR individual explosives license or storage certificate is violating Illinois law and could incur penalties. A violation of the Illinois Explosives Act can be a Class 3 felony, with a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. In addition, the IDNR can assess administrative fines for violations involving display fireworks and other explosives. Emergency responders are reminded to contact IDNR immediately with reports of personal injury or property damage resulting from the use of explosives, including display fireworks. For more information on the IDNR explosives regulatory program log on to http://www. d n r. i l l i n o i s . g o v / m i n e s / P a g e s / Explosives,HandlingStorage.aspx. To report an explosives incident or accident, contact the IDNR Office of Mines and Minerals Mine Safety and Training Explosives Unit at 217-782-9976.

GREENFIELD NEWS By MARY LOVE HAMMON
On TV Channel 9 has been of interest to me. Their fundraiser last evening and today had been scenic railroad trip with eating on the train. The engineers of one of the big black engines told how they used recycled vegetable oil from MacDonald’s instead of coal to produce the steam for power. He laughed and said, “This stirs up your appetite, as it smells of hamburgers and French fries.” When he spoke of the Grand Canyon he mentioned trains by the names El Captain and Super Chief. They were Burlington and Santa Fe and went west through tunnels and around the Rockies. Dale, Clifton (4 years) and I took our parents Nile and Caroline Love to Galesburg, where they boarded the Super Chief going to Los Angeles to see their son Elmer Love and wife Hazel - my brother and sisterin-law. They returned home on the Super Chief. About 56 years ago, Dale and I went out of the Galesburg station and boarded either the El Captain and came back on the Super Chief. We went north to St. Paul, Minn. and changed trains going west to Bismarck, N.D. to see Dick and Mel and Vickie Robinson - my sister, niece and brother-in-law. One summer of long ago, the Robinson family of Carlinville was cleaning out the attic. This was Clifton Hammon’s cousins, Richard and Vickie’s, grandparents who had treated him as a grandchild. He was invited to go to Carlinville and went. Some people’s junk is other people’s treasure! Uncle Gene Robinson and Uncle John Robinson had been in the US Navy WWII. Dick Robinson (dad of Richard and Vickie, uncle of Clifton) had been Army WWII. It was interesting to see those three younguns when they returned to Greenfield. White sailor middies, canteens, Richard had a gizmo in his eye from England. All three had fox hole shovels. My dad staked out and drew with a chalk line, a 9x12 piece of ground on my back lot for them to dig a swimming pool. By noon all you could see was their precious heads. Mother took them to Gustine’s in Jacksonville and bought a 9x12 wading pool from Kenny Shanahan. Dale put it at our back door. They used our platform curb for jumping into the pool. A tribute to the Presbyterian minister of Greenfield and White Hall in my life: Sunday evening 1940, Dr. Miller delivered the address at my GCHS baccalaureate. The late Bill Meng, Jim Rives, Florine Nash, Elizabeth Gwillum, Jeanne Coyne and George Koehm were 1940 classmates. Dr. Miller baptized my sister Melba and me. Rev. Wm. Cory Meeker commuted from Jacksonville with his
wife Genevieve. He baptized Wilma Davis, Christine Costello, my dad Nile Love and Mel’s husband Dick Robinson. Much later he baptized Clifton D. Hammon. When we moved our membership to White Hall Presbyterian Church, Rev. Justes was the minister. It was a joy to be selected to teach Vedder and Vivian Knight’s children. Rev. Harvey Mackfessel; Harriet, his wife, Jan and Douglas (their children) were with us next. Clifton was a Cub Scout and invited him to come speak. Rev. Harvey brought his seeing-eye dog (naturally, being blind) and gave an interesting talk about being trained with him. Rev. Al Noakes and Peg came next. He was Air Force. They hosted Dale’s and my golden wedding anniversary at the Carrollton Presbyterian Church and invited the White Hall flock. Rev. Gerald Boutelle lived in Carrollton manse. He and Deak Guis went to visit Dusty daily. Rev. delivered Dusty’s last rites. While he was our minister, I was in Barton Stone Nursing Home for three month (twice) and another; he came by with communion frequently. Rev. Hans comes from Springfield to my home with communion and healing oil. Recently he visited my son Clifton at Memorial Hospital in Springfield. Thanks be to God - he’s back to work. Rev. Hans and his son visited Chaco Culture National History Park in New Mexico. On the Pueblo Alto Trail - built in two stages from A.D. 1125-1130. It is a classic McElmo style pueblo with rooms organized into a compact rectangle with no plaza. Yes, the trains still run in the valley of the Grand Canyon of the Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado. Larry and Kathy Mears enjoyed their Bill and Gloria Gaither homecoming cruise to the Caribbean in February - March. They visited the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, HalfMoon Cove in Cozumel, Mexico. They enjoyed Gaither concerts daily. In May, they attended Kathy’s niece’s wedding in Pinehurst, N.C., visiting Larry’s uncle Marsh and cousin Liz in Lexington, Ky. on the way. Twenty Methodist church members attended the “Sound of Music” at Springfield Muny Opera. Choir Director Addie Gramelspacher was performing. The following people attended a birthday party honoring Pam Ross: Jack and Eleanor Ross of Greenfield, Pat and Mike Meyer of Jacksonville, Tracy Shane - Dakota Moore of Holiday Shores, Travis and Alexis Ross of St. Charles, Mo., Matt Meyer of Edwardsville, Greg and Pam Ross of Roodhouse. Jack and Betsy and Savannah Ross have returned from vacationing in Houston, Texas. ‘Til next time!

Tips for daily sun safety this summer You may remember to apply sunscreen at the beach, but do you remember to apply every day? Incidental sun exposure may seem harmless, but the rays you catch during your morning commute or walk around the block accumulate and
put you at an increased risk for skin cancer. That’s why it’s so important to wear at SPF 15 or higher, every single day. Take the steps to protect yourself. Check out these tips from Olay and The Skin Cancer Foundation.

Schwab retires from IVEDC Frank Schwab will retire from the Illinois Valley Economic Development Corporation (IVEDC) in midJuly. His 40-year career with the agency began with the position of planner; he then served as the assistant director for five years before being seated as executive director in 1979. Schwab has been an outspoken advocate for the agency’s
programs, both at the local and state level. He has seen many changes and challenges during his tenure, especially with more and more requirements and restrictions in providing services to those in need. He leaves the agency with a $10 million annual budget and nearly 180 employees in Macoupin, Jersey, Greene, and Calhoun counties.
