There are those who believe we all have our purpose for being put here on earth and if that is the case, then Grant Hudson surely knows why he was put here. The 8-year-old Greenfield Elementary student has come to the aid and ultimately saved the life of two of his family members in his younf life here on earth. Two years ago he saved the life of his great-grandmother, Doris Hudson, and three weeks ago he saved his 6-year-old cousin, Kaden Pfleger, from drowning while the family was vacationing in a hotel. According to Doris Hudson, the family took a trip to Hannibal, Mo., and spent a day on a boat and decided to spend the night at a hotel.
“It must have been around 8:30 p.m. and the boys wanted to go for a swim before they went to bed,” Doris Hudson said. “Grant knows how to swim but his cousin, Kaden, didn’t, so we told him to stay in the shallow end. His grandpa and Grant’s dad, Cory, were with them talking on the side of the pool.” In the blink of an eye, Kaden was nowhere to be seen and the adults went into panic mode. “They literally turned their head for one second and when they looked back they didn’t see him,” Doris Hudson said. “Grant was out there swimming so they yelled at him to see if he could spot him.” Before the adults could run to the other side of the pool, Grant had found Kaden and had his head above water. “I looked over and I saw him
on the bottom of the pool,” Grant Hudson said. “I swam over there to him and there was like two foot of water over his head. I went down

Greenfield Elementary student and got him and lifted his head out of the water and saved him from drowning.” Just seconds after he sank to the bottom of the deep end of the pool, Grant was quick to reach Kaden and lift him out of the water. “Grant simply acted out of
instinct and Kaden wasn’t hurt in the incident,” Doris Hudson said. “I don’t think what he did really hit Grant until the next morning at breakfast. He said to me, ‘You know, I’ve saved two people now.’” Two years ago Doris Hudson went to the elementary school to water a tree, which had been planted in her honor after serving as a district bus driver for 43 years, and her foot slipped through a grate in the road and she fell knee deep into the hole. “It doesn’t sound too bad but it was like I was in a vice and my circulation was cut off,” Doris Hudson said. “I felt the back of my leg and it felt like a rock so I knew I was in trouble.” Then 6-year-old Grant had gone with her to water the tree and she (See, grant, A2)

Carrollton's agriculture teacher Christie Joehl shows the presentation she gave to the board in St. Louis who was deciding on who would get a $25,000 Monsanto grant. The presentation helped secure the grant for Carrollton which will be used to purchase Google Chrome Books for the agriculture, science and math departments.
By carmen ensinger Greene Prairie Press It was announced at the Carrollton School Board Monday night that the district received the $25,000 Monsanto Grant the district had applied for. Last year the district was the recipient of a $10,000 grant from Monsanto. Agriculture teacher Christie Joehl shared the presentation she made to the Monsanto board in St. Louis prior to the selection of this year’s big winners. “They wanted three or four rural schools who received the grants in the past to come and make a presentation of how their grants were used,” Joehl said. “They wanted their board members to see just how the money they are giving out is being spent. There were representatives from businesses, industries and farmers from all across the U.S. that we got to talk with and tell about our program.” It was an opportunity to share how the money they granted the district was used and how it affects the students. Carrollton used the $10,000 grant to revamp the aging greenhouse.
“We talked about where the greenhouse started and where it is today,” Joehl said. “The ag mechanics kids provided a lot of the labor which helped them learn, and we were able to set up the horticulture class and actually have a place for them to work.” The students in the horticulture class learned by setting up what Joehl called a Greenhouse Customer Grower’s business. Each student was given the same amount of bench space and they could use this space to produce their own plants. The ultimate goal was to sell their plants and make a profit. In the process, they had to figure out the cost of materials, what each plant cost to grow individually, etc. Then, they had to present a bid to the FFA Chapter on what they wanted for their plants. “They were able to experience the business ethic behind it,” Joehl said. “By the end, they knew every single plant which was in that greenhouse and they could identify every pest that was in there, also. They took so much ownership over this and it was really amazing to see.” Because of the success of the program,
the horticulture program will be continuing this year. An aquaponics section is being set up in the back of the greenhouse. Joehl said the $25,000 grant received this year will be spent on Google Chrome Books for the agriculture, science and math departments along with some software. “I think us being there was a huge incentive for them to give us the grant again this year,” Joehl said. “They were able to actually make a connection with the person that was behind the paper.” The finalists for the grants are chosen by St. Louis city math and science teachers whose schools are not eligible to apply for the grant. They choose the applications with the most merit and then farmers from around the country choose the winner from the finalists. “They come from an area with six science departments and just finished building a new wing on top of that,” Joehl said. “They have a budget of $20,000 a year and we have a budget of $500 a year, so it’s good for them to see the rural education part of this and the need for the money around here.”

Enrollment up in Carrollton By carmen ensinger Greene Prairie Press Enrollment is up in the Carrollton School District, which translates into more money for the district in General State Aid. The information was presented to the school board at the Monday night monthly school board meeting. Grade School Principal Lori Baez said the grade school and middle school are up by 64 students. However, 32 of those students are in pre-K and do not count in GSA. “That leaves 32 students that we didn’t have at the end of last year,” Baez said. “Factoring in those who moved out of the district, and we are left with an additional 13 students, 11 of which are new middle school students, and we usually don’t see such an increase at that level.” High School Principal Leslee Frazer said the high school ended the year last year with 215 students and are starting this year with 231 students, an increase
of 16. “We have a very large freshmen group of kids that come in this year,” Frazier said. “In fact, it is the second largest class in the high school.” There are 68 students in the senior class, 52 at the junior level, 55 at sophomore level and 56 at the freshmen level. Carrollton Superintendent Dr. Kerry Cox said the district has a total of 628 students, which is up from last year. “We are continuing to move up in our enrollment and that is very good,” she said. “As our levels continue to increase we will be keeping an eye on our support staff to make sure we are meeting all of our kids’ needs. Once they come through that door they are ours and we welcome all our new families.” What is also growing in the district is the poverty level, which is determined by the number of students in the district who receive free or reduced meals. While they receive nutritious meals during the week, some of these students are not so lucky on the weekend when
school isn’t in session. With this in mind, Carrollton School District is participating in the Carrollton Community Back Pack Program. The program was spearheaded by Suzanne Hough of Carrollton Bank, with funding from local banks, along with other donations, going towards purchase of food to be distributed to students on the last school day of the week. Approximately 100 students can be served in the program and organizers are looking to have their first distribution day on Sept. 12. “This is a program that a lot of different communities across the state have integrated into their school system,” Dr. Cox said. “We are excited about having this opportunity to offer our families.” Dr. Cox said a location to store nine weeks of food at a time is being finalized. The food will be sorted and packed by various school organizations and groups and then distributed to the students in the program. It will repeat every nine weeks. (See, carrollton, A2) C

as councilman the way the city is operating,” Phillips said in his letter of resignation, which he presented to Mayor Tommy Martin and each member of the council. “You can’t continue paying excessive wages for part-time help when we have an elected official with over eight years experience that is capable of doing the same job.” Phillips said he was referring to the two women hired by the council in the financial office, which includes former Carrollton Treasurer Suzanne Roundcount and Alice Hancock, a former employee of Scheffel and Company. The elected official he is referring to is city clerk Pat Plahn, who was elected for her third term in the November election. Under former Mayor Joe
got it done yet and then they go and hire the other one.” The council approved a consulting agreement with Hancock back in February to help Roundcount get the books in order and prepare for the audit. At the time of the vote it was noted that Hancock put in the agreement the city could cancel at any time with a twoweek notice. “Before the city hired her and started paying her an hourly wage, they spent $20,000 for her company to straighten out the books and get ready for the audit,” Phillips said. “It is out of hand, totally.” Poor communication is another reason cited by Phillips for quitting. “We have poor communication with all the alderman and (See, alderman, A2)
Multiple drug charges filed against Carrollton man By carmen ensinger Greene Prairie Press A Carrollton man is facing prosecution for a third time on drug-related charges stemming from the manufacture of cannabis. Radeane M. King, 68, of rural Carrollton was arrested on Aug. 15 by members of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department and the South Central Illinois Drug Task Force after the SCIDT developed information pertaining to cannabis plants growing on his property. According to Greene County Sheriff Rob McMillen, the drug task force met at the sheriff’s department and the drug task force sought a warrant to search the residence and property of King. The search warrant was granted and members of the drug task force, sheriff’s deputies and officers from the Carrollton and Greenfield police departments executed the search warrant at the King residence and surrounding property. “During the search of the
property, officers located in excess of 20 cultivated cannabis plants,” Sheriff McMillen said. “A search of the residence resulted in the discovery of a firearm and harvested cannabis plant material.” Charges were filed in Greene County Circuit Court on Aug. 18 charging King with Unlawful Production of Cannabis Sativa Plant, Unlawful Possession with Intent to Deliver Cannabis, Unlawful Possession of Cannabis and Unlawful Possession of Weapon by a Felon. This is the third time since 1997 King has faced drug charges in Greene County. In 2001 he was charged with Unlawful Manufacture of Cannabis and Unlawful Production of Cannabis Sativa Plant. In 2002 he pleaded guilty to the first count, Unlawful Manufacture, and was sentenced to four years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Bond was set in the amount of $50,000. King posted the required $5,000 (10 percent) and was released.

Close but still no Grant chicken ordinance By CARMEN ENSINGER Greene Prairie Press The chickens that are currently residing illegally in Carrollton because of its animal ordinance may be dead and gone before the city council is finally presented an ordinance to vote on. Mayor David Stendeback, aided by note cards from city attorney Anne Clough, tabled the issue once again. “I talked to Alderman Tom Wilson and he said he would like to put this on the agenda again when he’s here,” Stendeback said, referring to the fact that Wilson, who is on the Chicken Ordinance Committee, was absent from the meeting, as was Alderman Joe Harness. Clough said she still had a few questions, which needed to be addressed before putting the ordinance out to the council. “I have pretty well got it done but I still have a couple questions I need to ask him (Wilson),” Clough said. “My question is we are doing adjoining neighbors but what about people across the street? They are close to the situation, too.” Clough is referring to the part of the proposed amendment to the ordinance, which says the chicken owner must get permission from adjoining neighbors on each immediate side of their property that it is OK for them to have the chickens. Last month Clough said residents couldn’t have chickens within the city limits because of the zoning ordinance, which required a distance of at least 200 feet from the neighbor’s property line. The council, however, didn’t see this as a problem and changed the distance in the zoning ordinance from 200 feet to 20 feet. Alderman Dewain Freand, however, would like the distance changed from 20 feet to the property line. “I would like it moved to the property line because with these small lots, if you come back 20 feet from each way, it is going to be tight,” he said. “Many of the lots in town are only 50 foot wide.” Mike Snyder, director of public works, noted that accessory structures
must be five feet from the property line on the side and three feet in the rear. Prior to the start of the meeting, Clough swore in Geoff Driskill as alderman in Ward II to replace Sean Walker, who retired two months ago. The council approved changing its meeting date back to the second Tuesday after the first Monday of the month, instead of Wednesday. The meeting date was changed to accommodate council members attending school sporting events. Later, the council added a workshop two weeks after the meeting. It was decided it would also be changed to a Tuesday to be consistent. Approval was given for the purchase of tester for the water plant at a cost of $1,400, which also includes shipping. Water plant operator Rick Goan said he had two of them and one of them went bad at the beginning of the week. There should be two because they are used every day to perform 20 different tests on the water, Goan said. Repair to the storm sewer basin was approved at a cost of $8,834. There have been no repairs made to the basin since 2010. Workers from the Greene County Work Camp will be down to have it cleaned out and ready to go for the repairs, which are expected to be done the last week in August. Snyder said there are five fire hydrants in the city in need of replacement and it’s possible the fire department could help pay for these. “They (fire department) are going to have a meeting and see what kind of money they can come up with to help us out,” Snyder said. “We’ve also been discussing starting some kind of fire hydrant replacement program to get some of these older hydrants replaced.” Snyder said it could cost around $2,275 per hydrant if all parts are replaced, but noted not all hydrants will need everything included in the $2,275 price tag. There are a total of 118 hydrants in the city and summer help painted each of them this summer. The council unanimously approved Cathy Davis as a member of the Pool Board, replacing Leah Henson who resigned last month.

I just can’t do it anymore – I wake up at 2 a.m. and that is all I think about. I just wanted to tell Roodhouse why I quit being an alderman. It’s just bothering me too much.”
It took the Jaws of Life to get Doris Hudson out of that grate and because of the quick action of Grant, Doris escaped the incident with only bad bruising to the lower half of her leg. When asked what he wants to be when he grows up, Grant said he wants to be a fireman just like his dad. Grant is the son of Cory and Abby Hudson of Greenfield.
Phillips said he appreciates the people of Roodhouse giving him the opportunity to serve. “I want to thank the people of Ward II for electing me,” he said. “At this time, I feel I can no longer help to improve your ward and the city.” Mayor Martin, in accepting his resignation, thanked Phillips for his nine months of service to the city.
Carrollton (Continued from A1) Dr. Cox commented on the dual credit statistics with Lewis and Clark Community College, noting that since it was implemented in 1999, Carrollton students have saved more than $700,000 in tuition. Students have taken 261 courses for a total of 895 credit hours. “We continue to have a very strong relationship with them and appreciate the support and what they are able to provide for our kids,” Dr. Cox said. “The credits they are able to earn while still in high school is money that stays in our parents’ pockets.” In the maintenance update, Dr. Cox reported new windows were installed in the industrial technology storage area over the weekend. There are still a few more security cameras that need installed, but other than that only a few minor
maintenance issues are left to be completed. Dr. Cox reported that the first GSA payment of $82,000 has been received. This amount is calculated on the best three month average daily attendance from the previous year. This shows Carrollton with an increase of 11.44 students, which factors into a two percent increase in the GSA. “It is not everything we are supposed to be getting because it is prorated at 89 percent,” Dr. Cox noted. “But we continue to look for ways to be efficient and still meet the needs of our students. “ Dr. Cox said the district is still ahead of where it was last year, and looking at the best three month ADA factored in for next year the district is looking at 562.1 which is more students than the district has had since the 2009-10 school year.

It's never too early to start teens on a budget At some point, everyone will have to learn how to live on a budget, whether it's at home, at work or with a nonprofit organization. For teenagers with a limited income and plenty of interests that cost money, learning to manage a budget can never come too early. Money management is a necessary skill, and learning how to apply good management skills to a set budget at an early age can help teens grow into responsible adults. To help teens develop these financial skills, parents should work with their children to set a budget limit, create a list of wants and a list of needs, and look for ways expenses could be reduced. The following five tips provide some ways to help a teen live within a budget. 1. Identifying technological wants and needs. It seems everyone has a smartphone these days, and teens often think they can survive only with the latest and greatest in cellphone technology. However, the cost of the device and service plans quickly adds up. Discuss with your teen how the phone will be used, and find out if they are willing to reduce expenses to save money on cellphone technology. One way teens can keep this area of the budget under control is with Straight Talk Wireless. For only $45 a month, Straight Talk offers unlimited nationwide, talk, text and data - all without a contract or credit check, and with 4GLTE nationwide coverage on America's largest and most dependable networks. Or, with the "Bring Your Own Phone" option, you can even give your teen your old smartphone and switch to Straight Talk service without having to buy a new phone. Parents will also be interested in the new Safe Driver Car Connection available through Straight Talk, which blocks texting while the teen is driving, tracks the vehicle in real time and monitors their driving behaviors. 2. Create a spending journal. Teenagers can keep a journal for one week on every item purchased during that week, as well as the item's price. Once the information has been collected, divide it all into categories. How many of the purchases were needs and how many were wants? How many of the purchases were immediately consumed, and how many lasted for a couple of hours or days? This information will give the teenager valuable insight into his shopping habits and patterns, allowing him to better identify where his money is going each week. 3. Develop a spending strategy. In
some families, a teenager may receive an allowance designated for specific categories like transportation or clothing, for example. And in some families, teens are expected to work to earn the spending money they'll use to pay for fun and those needed items. As the budget is being established, parents and teens should have a discussion about what parents will cover and what teens are expected to cover. This helps teens establish a spending strategy that will not overlap with funds already provided by parents. 4. Make a wish list. Wish lists can help teens set goals for what they will save their money to purchase, and they also give family members excellent ideas for holiday and birthday presents. Establishing savings goals early will help teens work toward purchasing that first car, their first house or something else that is very important. Parents should encourage their teens to price

Getting Out of God’s Way The late writer Flannery O'Connor kept a devotional journal when she was in her twenties and a student at the Iowa Writers' Workshop. It has recently been published under the title A Prayer Journal. O'Connor was a fervent Catholic and her journal is filled with interesting reflections on spirituality, as well as writing, which she saw as a way to express her spirituality and hopefully lead others to God. She laments early on that "I do not know you God because I am in the way. Please help me to push myself aside." Throughout the journal we witness an earnest young woman struggling heroically to be more pious, and striving to get out of God's way, i.e., how to get rid of the ego and let God fill up the space. Her simultaneous struggle to destroy the ego while seeking literary fame is sometimes the focus of her reflections, as when she says "Don't let me ever think, dear God, that I was anything but the instrument for Your story, just like the typewriter was mine." God desires to work through all of us, through our words and our deeds, if we can only get our egos out of His way. - Christopher Simon

Cable franchise to pay Roodhouse for pole use beginning of the quarter and tell me they are going to test,” Martin said. “We have no idea who it is going to be, and they are calling me within two days of receiving the letter to find out what time to come.” Alderwoman Barb Alred wants the city to do an internal audit, but that might not be as easy as it sounds. “Our attorney called and talked to someone at the Attorney General’s office and they said that to do that we first have to go through our chief of police, then the county sheriff who then gives the information to the state’s attorney,” Martin said. “The only way they would get involved is if the state’s attorney called them and gave them a good reason to get involved. It was basically left at that.” Martin said he gave the council a list of three properties in the city to be sold for taxes, which he thinks the city might be interested in procuring. “I gave them the addresses and told them to go by and look at them and if they think we might be inter-

ested in them to bring it up at the next meeting,” Martin said. A discussion was also held on giving the park board the hail damage insurance money the city received regarding the hail damage which occurred back in 2011. The park board wants to use this money to help build the memorial basketball courts. “If that money was for fixing the roofs on the buildings then that should be done first, and then whatever is left can go to building the basketball courts,” Martin said. “When that is done, then the park board can decide how much they can afford to put into the project.” A discussion was brought up by Alred on how the city should use the money it receives from the video gaming machines. “She said she would like to see the money put into a special account to be used for projects for the kids,” Martin said. “I don’t think anybody had a problem with it, but it wasn’t on the agenda so we couldn’t vote on it.”

By CARMEN ENSINGER Greene Prairie Press Roodhouse will have a little extra income coming in for the next 10 years thanks to the sale of a local cable franchise and an astute mayor. When New Wave Communications took over Cass Cable, they approached the city to continue the contract the city had with Cass Cable. “When I read that contract I saw a flaw in there,” Roodhouse Mayor Tommy Martin said. “The flaw was we didn’t get any pole charges from them using the poles.” Cable companies usually use the electric poles to run their lines. Roodhouse services its own electric customers and, therefore, they own their own poles, whereas the poles in other communities are owned by Ameren. Mayor Martin said he instructed the city office manager to contact New Wave and begin a dialogue. “It took about two months to get this settled but they agreed to pay us $5 per pole per year for the duration of the contract,” Martin said. With 1,150 utility poles throughout the city, this means Roodhouse will be netting $5,750 per year for the next 10 years. “To my knowledge, I don’t think anyone has ever gone after this money before,” Martin said. “They pay Ameren for the use of their poles so they might as well pay us for using ours, too.” After several months of talk, the council finally agreed on the purchase of a new zero turn mower from Prairie Land Power for $5,599. The city sold its 10-year-old John Deere mower to the high bidder at $2,310 and applied the funds toward the purchase. The new mower ended up costing the city $3,289. Several items were discussed in the workshop, which was held immediately before the regular council meeting including the city’s drug ordinances. Alderwoman Barb Alred inquired about the policies implemented by the city regarding drug testing of its employees. Mayor Martin informed Alred every employee working for the city, with the exception of office personnel, are subject to random drug testing. Midwest Truckers takes care of the program for the city and randomly tests four times a year. “They send me a letter at the

RiverBend Children’s Choir at Lewis and Clark Community College is inviting young singers to join for the new season starting this fall semester. The group is open to boys and girls in second through eighth grade. The choir meets in the Ringhausen Music Building on the Godfrey campus of L&C. Rehearsals are weekly on Tuesdays from 5-6 p.m. The group has participated with the L&C Concert Choir and Limited Edition on several occasions, in addition to their own
performances. The director is Barbara McHugh, of Godfrey. McHugh taught elementary music for 27 years in the St. Louis area. She has had students selected to perform in the American Choral Directors Association national and division honor choirs. She is also part of the Music Preparatory department at L&C as a piano instructor. “The RiverBend Children’s Choir is for all students who love to sing,” McHugh said. “It is to give those who love to sing an outlet, as well as develop skills that can be used in any choral experience.” Tuition is $60 for the season, which runs from Tuesday, Aug. 26 to Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2014. For more information or to register, call L&C’s Music department office at (618) 468-4731.

Greenfield Lions Club is celebrating its 75th year celebration. The Community Garden supplied nearly 100 needy families with roasting ears and ripe tomatoes; it is located west of Hunt’s Locker behind the original Charity Church. Lilas Lohr of Indiana has returned to her home after spending a few days with her sisters, Beverly McCollum Still and Linda McCollum Pohlman and her brother, Gary and wife Elizabeth McCollum - Bev read her Bible while Lilas went to Wrights to see Gillespie cousins. Larry and Kathy Mears and Amelia Burger and Jan Walden enjoyed Monday night Country Market in Carrollton, as did many others. Today, my sister in Fountain, Colo. was able to answer her telephone and sing “Glory, Glory Hallelujah” for me! Her daughter Vickie Robinson Tiffany lives with her and cares for her needs. Next-door neighbor Elizabeth Fields was surprised when I loaned her a 1989 World Book Encyclopedia containing a chapter of the Koster Prehistoric Diggings. It is the greatest in North America. Will and Mary Jennings are enjoying sweet corn from Mr. and Mrs. Muntz. Mary’s nephew planted nine acres; this makes me remember when grandma Alta Cole’s sons Bob and Richard planted - sold to Homecoming; the money was contributed to the next Homecoming fund. Our sympathy is extended to family and friends of Helen Camp. Visitation and last rites were held Aug. 9, 2014 at Greenfield’s Charity Baptist Church. Interment was at Hickory Grove Cemetery south of Wrights. The dinner was prepared by ladies of Charity Baptist Church. Arnetta Cole, sister of Shirley Cole Hammon flew into Peoria from her Florida home to enjoy time in Sherman with Clifton D. and Shirley Hammon. Two couples spent quality time in Greenfield with Debbi and Beth Fields. They ate catfish at the Bent Fork and were enthralled with the novelty shop (Cason’s) and the south park with the train and green grass. The couples used to enjoy Greenfield relations. Clifton and Shirley just entered my door with goodies, so goodbye! Sandy Mansfield, a former classmate of Debbi Fields, was visiting her mother in Wood River. Sandy came to Greenfield and had lunch with Debbi, daughter Beth and granddaughter Dani. When Debbi came to fix my roasting ears - the ones Larry and Kathy Mears grew - Sandy came along. She enjoyed a cherry Pepsi, a strawberry, music
and sang for us. She and Debbi used to sing together. They have been friends since third grade at Cottage Hills Elementary School. My cousin Will Jennings telephoned me. I believe his wife Mary is an invalid. I know that he and their daughters and son care for her needs. He remembered as a little boy living on the Duncan farm eight miles east of here on the Hettick Road. Our uncle Si was a partner with his father, my uncle Homer. Will was just a little fella when uncle Si came out in his Navy whites. When Will asked him where he was going, he said, “I am taking your aunt Caroline (my mother) to St. Louis to a USA Veteran’s Convention. There will be bands, parades and flags!” Recently, a former Greenfield gentleman, Joe Story and wife met with a tragic auto accident in which Story lost his left arm. They were returning to the home near Peoria after a successful camping and fishing vacation in Minnesota. A daughter and husband saw all of this as they were a few vehicles behind. Story attempted to pass; things began to swerve. His vehicle rolled several times and landed upside down. The wife was not injured. He did not have his arm hanging out, as the windows were closed, but shattered. The couple were taken to Mayo Clinic for emergency and onward to St. Francis Hospital in Rochester, Minn. This happened July 31, 2014. Brother Jim Story said, “The exact time - July 31, 1939 that our dad Richard ‘Dick’ Story lost his arm on the hill west of Berdan.” This story brought teardrops to my eyes, as I was 16 1/2 year old and returning to White Hall with my uncle Paul and aunt Allie Overbey. Aunt Allie and I rode in the rumble seat and uncle and Dick in the front. We arrived at the White Hall Hospital. Uncle Paul notified Dick’s parents, Jesse and Effie Story. Coroner, the late J.P. Shields, tended to things. By the way, Joe Story is probably at home by now. He lives ten miles near Jim and Linda. ‘Til next time!

Card of Thanks
With Heartfelt Thanks We are grateful to our many friends, family, and neighbors for the love and support we received following the death of our loved one, Mark Steckel. His tragic accident occurred as Mark was driving a tractor on his farm. The prayers, visits, phone calls, food, flowers, planters, masses and memorials to Shriners Hospital and P.A.W.S. were greatly appreciated and will always be cherished. A special thank you to Reverend Ed Haun, Father Hembrow, Joe and Danny at Airsman-Hires, the Rescue Squad, the White Hall First Baptist Church, and the Steckel Marsh Gang. We will miss Mark’s wonderful smile, his desire to help others and his generous spirit. The memories we have will remain in our hearts forever. Joyce, Julie and Rick

Ben Allen worked with a Montana man, Tracy Kroon, to find a bus of the same make and model as the original Grafton Dinky to create a replica. The bus will be outfitted with a grill and hood to mimic the distinct look of the rail bus that used to travel from Grafton to Alton.
By Bob Crossen Greene Prairie Press The Grafton City Council approved a committee of community members to head the restoration of a Dinky replica to eventually be placed in the museum at the visitor’s center. Chaired by Bob Smith, the committee consists of Ben Allen, Trudy Allen, Dennis Berry, Peggy Berry, Ed Amburg, Tom Wright, Mary Lillisve and Dianna Huttes. The committee meets on the second and fourth Monday of the month at 2 p.m. at the Loading Dock in Grafton. The Dinky is a historic railbus fashioned out of a White Motor Company school bus that transported people from Grafton to Alton, with stops along the Great River Road during the trip. The original Dinky is located at the Museum of Transportation in Missouri, and efforts have been
made in the past to return the railbus to Grafton. The museum, however, has been reluctant to give up the converted bus. Ben Allen worked for years to find a replica bus that could be converted into a replica of the Dinky, and in his search he found a bus of the same make and model through a man, Tracy Kroon, in Montana. Kroon restored White Motor Company buses, which had been used as tour buses at Yellowstone National Park. Kroon found a bus that was put put up for auction in California. The city won the auction with an $18,000 bid, which was approved by the council. The bus was brought to Montana, and last August, Dan Bechtold volunteered to transport the bus to Grafton where restoration could begin. In October of 2012, the council approved $8,000 from tax increment financing money to

be used in the restoration of the dinky, specifically the front grille and hood. When the restoration is complete the replica Dinky will be located at the Grafton Visitor’s Center where a museum addition is going to be constructed. The city was issued a $650,000 community development grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to construct the addition, which will also be home to relics and historic items of interest relating to the history of Grafton.

trends for your rental (StatePoint) Just because you’re a renter doesn’t mean you need to settle for bland, boring décor. You can make more of your space in an inexpensive yet trendy way. Don’t know where to start, don’t worry. Here are ten top home decor trends online real estate experts Homes. com and ForRent.com uncovered after surveying more than 140 home design experts across the country on the year’s biggest home trends. n Do-it-Yourself: Do-it-yourself projects save money and allow you to incorporate personality into your decor. For example, distressing old headboards, hutches, benches, and other wood furniture can enrich a room’s appeal. n Go Vertical: Nothing perks up a room like a fresh coat of paint. If your rental property prohibits painting, use temporary techniques to create a gorgeous visual landscape, such as your own artwork. n Fall in Love with Floral: Make your apartment pop with floral patterns. If that’s overwhelming, keep it subtle with an accent pillow in the den or bedroom.
n Brighten Up: If your space is looking dull, brighten it up with a splash of color. Whether it’s the smallest objects or an entire wall, color accents can drastically change a room’s appearance, giving it that pop you’ve been looking for. This year, it’s all about purple -- Radiant Orchid, the Pantone color of the year, to be exact. n Organize: The kitchen is often overlooked when it comes to organization. Storage bins and labels in the pantry keep snacks, condiments and other food items separate and easily accessible. A command center at the front of your home should include a place to keep keys, mail, sunglasses and the other things you need most. n Bring the Outside In: Plants add gorgeous depth and texture to a home. Incorporate different shapes, sizes, and colors for visual appeal. For additional decorating tips, visit the Idea Gallery at Homes.com. If you have your own décor ideas, use #HomeMoments to share them on Twitter. There’s no place like home, so take it from the pros -- it’s worth the effort to make your rental property a great space.

Pride of Greenfield
Doug & Tina Fahrig of 407 Prairie st. in Greenfield are the recipients of the ìPRIDE OF GREENFIELDî award for the month of August, 2014. Tina says We purchased our house 10 years ago and every year we try to do a little more or add something different. We have purchased all of our bushes as well as a lot of our flowers from Kansnyís. When we lost our parents we wanted to do a memorial garden in their honor, so we put up the white picket fence and added flowers and the gifts we received from friends and family. When you live in such a great neighborhood where everyone takes pride in their homes and yards, it inspires you to want to do the same. Bill to increase duck stamp price passes House Natural Resources Committee Ducks Unlimited officials praised the House of Representatives Natural Resources Committee’s passage by voice vote Wednesday, July 30, of the Federal Duck Stamp Act of 2014. The measure is now headed to the House floor for consideration. The Federal Duck Stamp Act of 2014, a bill introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate would raise the price of the Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp (duck stamp) to $25 from its current level of $15 and dedicate the amount of the increase to conservation easements with private landowners. “Ducks Unlimited appreciates the support of House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Doc Hastings (R-Washington) and Ranking Democrat Peter DeFazio (D-Oregon) in moving quickly to report HR 5069 to the House floor,” said Ducks Unlimited CEO Dale Hall. “We also appreciate the leadership of Subcommittee Chairman John Fleming (R-Louisiana) and the bipartisan cosponsors in bringing the bill to the Committee for consideration. The price of the duck stamp was last adjusted 23 years ago. Since then, the price of land has tripled and conservation buying power has diminished greatly. Once again, sportsmen and women are willing to lead in

funding conservation that benefits all of our citizens.” Since its enactment in 1934, the federal duck stamp program has protected nearly 6 million acres of habitat through expenditures of more than $900 million. The price of the duck stamp has been raised only seven times. The last price increase raised the price of the stamp to $15 — the single longest period without a price increase in the program’s history. The Congressional Budget Office found that because the federal duck stamp is a user fee, such a price increase would have no net impact on federal spending. Sponsored by Chairman Fleming, HR 5069 is originally co-sponsored in the House by Congressmen Ron Kind (D-Wisconsin), Jason Smith (R-Missouri) and Rob Wittman (R-Virginia).

Carrollton resident and Calhoun assistant coach Nelson in fight of his life Dan Brannan Greene Prairie Press Carrollton resident and Calhoun High School defensive coordinator Tim Nelson today lives life with the four F’s – faith, family, friends and football as his priorities. Since late last football season, Nelson has combined a fifth F to the mix – fighting for his life – with three cancer discoveries. He endured 36 chemotherapy treatments, 28 radiology treatments and three surgeries. Last high school football season, Nelson was the Dupo head coach and his team was riding a 4-4 wonloss record. He was driving home from practice at Dupo and he noticed he was bleeding and it just continued to worsen. When he finally arrived home and attempted to walk in his front door, he collapsed to the ground. “A neighbor helped me get medical attention after I collapsed,” Nelson said. “When I was first found I had a terribly low blood pressure of 80 over 50 and nearly died.” And his fight then became for his life, not winning football games

It was really the community have done for him light hearted. He showed us videos as “extremely humbling. “People we of his daughter and wanted to know don’t even know have sent checks more about what I did.” While he trying to help with our expenses was at Busch Stadium, the Calhoun assistant coach walked away for a from the treatment,” he said. Nelson was a member of the moment and when he returned he Calhoun Class 1A state football was escorted to meet a special perchampionship team in 1992. He had son – former Cardinal manager Tony to resign from his position at Dupo LaRussa, who was then with Motte. “I was nervous and couldn’t and wanted to return to coaching as Calhoun defensive coordinator believe it,” Nelson said of meeting
LaRussa. “He said he knew a lot of what I had been through talking to Jason Motte and he wanted him to know he was an inspiration to not only my family but to others who have the disease. He told me to continue to be an inspiration and not give up.” The Calhoun coach had his second big surprise from Motte last week when the Cardinal reliever made a surprise visit to the Warriors’ football practice. “He texted me Tuesday night and said he wanted to see me in my environment, so I met him at the McDonald’s in Alton and I drove him to Calhoun. He spoke to the high school kids individually and also the seventh- and eighth-grade Calhoun Crush team and coaches.” Nelson was especially appreciative of what Motte did and it will leave a lasting impression with him and the Calhoun players. For now, the Calhoun defensive coordinator said he just wants to be “normal.”’ “I want to live my life and normal to me is coaching and letting the kids know that despite what happens in your life you can overcome,” he said. “I am trying to live my life and show people things might be negative, but you can push on. I am just trying to give back.” dbrannan@campbellpublications.net and danbrannannews on Twitter.
Carrollton residents, wife, offer helping hand to Tim Nelson When seeking inspiration, Carrollton residents don’t have to look very far in observing Tim Nelson, who is battling for his life after three cancer discoveries. Nelson, who is going to be an assistant coach at Calhoun this fall, has recovered from surgeries, therapies, etc., in the last year, but he never let’s his faith waver. Sometimes people don’t know how much their consistent prayers and encouragement mean to someone going through a cancer diagnosis. One Carrollton man in particular – Mike Kiger – has especially touched the heart of Nelson. Kiger, the former long-time Carrollton Police Chief, is also being treated for cancer. Nelson told me that Kiger understands everything he is enduring. “I call him Mentor Mike,” Nelson said. “He has shown me strength when things seem tough. Every single week, Mike and his wife have sent me a card. I can’t even say how much that has meant to me.” The Calhoun assistant coach said a person couldn’t make it through a disease like cancer without having support or someone mentor him. “When you talk with someone who has or has had cancer, they understand the struggle.” Nelson said the power of prayer has certainly showed in his recovery. In his last checks, he was 67 percent free of cancer in his lungs, from 9 mm to 3 mm in nodules, amazing for where he was some months earlier. “For four months I couldn’t hardly get out of bed, but I kept receiving all these cards and mail that people were praying for me,” he said. “You see all these people rooting for you and you don’t want to have a bad day and you don’t want to let them down.” Tim recently turned 39 and has
been married to his wife, Casey, for a little over a year. Shortly after they were married, the cancer was discovered. “She has been my Dan's absolute rock,” Tim said. “She Viewpoints has had so much to deal By Dan Brannan with my illness and her father has also had health problems. She sees when I am having a bad day and no one else sees it. It means everything what she has done for me. I have joked many times she received the broken model of me, but she has never given up.” Nelson said both Carrollton and people in Calhoun County are a tight-knit group of people. When a neighbor needs a helping hand, there is never a better place to receive help and guidance. I couldn’t agree more with what Tim Nelson said, that Carrollton and Calhoun residents do come together when there is a friend in need, not only with encouragement and food, but constant prayer. It is difficult to find anyone more motivational than this Carrollton man. “God has had his hand on me,” Nelson said. “It just seemed like he has been guiding me through this. My first goal the first day I found out I had cancer was to be back on the football field coaching this fall. It will be very emotional when I take the field at Calhoun High School on Aug. 29.”
