Carrollton alderwoman questions police department By CArmeN eNSiNger Greene Prairie Press Carrollton alderwoman Sharon Butler had several questions for Police Chief Kenny Kallal at the July 30 workshop meeting of the council. Butler said several issues have been brought to her attention by the residents of Carrollton “I have been getting calls from people at my house and they are unhappy with the police situation,” Butler said. “I don’t know what is going on, but I have been getting a lot of calls on so many different things I had to make a list so I wouldn’t forget any of them.” First on this list was vandalism to mailboxes in the city. Butler asked Kallal if his department had ever found out who was responsible and he said they had not.

“What are you going to do about this?” Butler asked. “I think one of them has already replaced theirs, but the others say they are not going to. They think the city should do something about this. One of them said that you told them it was a rock there is no way it was a rock that put the dent in those mailboxes. I think we need to talk to the people that got hit with this.” Kallal asked Butler what she would like for him to do. “Tell them you have been checking on it or something – I don’t know. What I do know is that I have been getting calls on this,” she said. Kallal told Butler to have the people call him. This brought up another complaint – this one from Butler herself - who was unable to get ahold of Kallal when she had an animal control prob-

one person handling all the calls he instituted a chain of order whereby if one person handled the call on Monday night and another call came in on Wednesday, that call would go to the next person on the list. This way, they would handle the calls

equally. “At the end of the month, when it came to who was answering the calls and who was getting the money it wasn’t working out,” Kallal said. “Dave knows that – we have sat down, all three of us, and talked about how we were going to do it. You can’t just be calling these guys – you got to go through the top (police department).” Butler said that was OK, but asked why wasn’t the council told about the change. The alderwoman went on to say she had gotten a complaint that other people could not reach the chief of police. “I had a citizen come to my door Saturday and said he called your cell phone five times and he’s called up here to the police department to (See, carrollton, A2)

have to make an effort to assist new teachers ‘informally’ – no, it’s not ideal,” he said. “But it’s not the end of the world. We just have to keep on keeping on.” The district has teaching vacancies for a junior high physical education teacher, junior high science, special education teacher at the elementary, sixth grade teacher and pre-K teacher at North Greene Elementary.

“This gave the new teachers the opportunity to ask the ‘dumb questions’ to a colleague without going to an administrator in charge of evaluating the teacher for answers .”

Les Stevens

North Greene Superintendent three years ago the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) funded mentors to meet with new teachers in the district on a regular basis to assist and orient them to the profession and to the school district. “This gave the new teachers the opportunity to ask the ‘dumb questions’ to a colleague without going to an administrator in charge of evaluating the teacher for answers,” Stevens said. “Their fear of appearing naive or unprepared were erased and they could get answers to their questions or help in solving a problem they might be experiencing.” The state funded these mentors for their extra work to the tune of $1,200. Then funding stopped altogether. “I convinced the board to fund it at 50 percent when this happened,” Stevens said. “The expenditure of funds depended upon how many first year teachers we had.” In an effort to cut expenditures, even though the district will have a number of new teachers this year, the board defunded the mentoring program. Stevens considers it a big loss to the district. “Considering the fact that we’ll

Should the one percent County School Facilities Sales Tax pass, Stevens said the district could see an addition $279,655. This amount is based on 46 percent of the total revenue generated for the county based on student enrollment. Everything in the county sales tax base is subject to the one percent tax except for: cars, trucks, ATV’s, boats, RV’s, mobile homes, unprepared food, drugs including over the counter and vitamins, farm equipment and parts, farm inputs and services. If it is not currently taxed, then it will not be subject to this tax, either. Retail establishments such as restaurants would be subject to the tax as well as businesses selling, televisions and clothes. The district could use this money generated each year for a variety of projects including construction of new facilities, additions and renovations, security, entrances, safety, disabled access, ongoing maintenance, architectural planning, durable equipment, fire prevention and safety, land acquisition, energy efficiency, parking lots, demolition and roof repairs. By CArmeN eNSiNger Greene Prairie Press A Carrollton native has become commander of one of the newest and most advanced war ships in the U.S. Navy. Commander Kendall Bridgewater, 47, born and raised in Carrollton and now a resident of Coronado, Calif., officially took the reins of the littoral combat ship (LCS) USS Fort Worth in a time-honored change of command ceremony on board the ship while the ship was docked at Naval Base San Diego July 25. Bridgewater graduated from Carrollton High School in 1985 and knew before he ever donned the cap and walked across the stage that his place was in the military. “I joined the Army in my junior year under the Delayed Entry Program and left for basic training shortly after graduating from high school,” Bridgewater said from aboard the USS Fort Worth. From 1985 to 1989, Bridgewater was a cannon crewman in the Army’s 1st Armored and 101st Divisions. After getting out of the Army, Bridgewater took a job at Olin Corporation but found he missed the military life. “I was out for almost five years and I went back into the Army Reserve because I got bored and was looking for something new,” Bridgewater said. “I was going to school trying to finish up my master’s degree and wanted to do something else, so for two years I was a drill sergeant until I finally decided to go to active duty.” This led him to applying for and getting accepted into Officer Candidate School with the Navy in 1997. “I found I really missed the military lifestyle and the camaraderie that I enjoyed with my fellow soldiers in the Army and I was looking for that again,” he said. “Plus, I had a desire to serve my country, so that is why I looked into going back into the military on an active basis.” By this time, Bridgewater had C

his master’s in National Security Strategies through the Naval War College in Newport, R.I. “Because I had my degree I was eligible to get an officer’s appointment, so that’s what I went out and tried to do,” Bridgewater said. “I talked with the Navy and they asked me what I wanted to do and I said maybe something to do with weapons – something exciting. They asked if I wanted to be a surface warfare officer and I said ‘sounds good – let’s do it.’ And that is exactly what I did.” The USS Fort Worth is part of the Navy’s Freedom class of combat ships, which is relatively new. “It is a radical departure from how they built and operated the ships in the past,” Bridgewater said. “We have taken a lot of little pieces of experimental things that we have done in the past on different ships and put it all together in one place. By that I mean we are going to narrow man crew, taking advantage of technology and taking advantage of

high skill training that we provide the sailors who command this ship.” To be more specific, according to ussfortworth.org, “LCS will be a Network-Centric Advanced Technology Ship and will rely heavily on manned and unmanned vehicles to execute assigned missions and operate as part of a netted, distributed force. It will employ technologically advanced weapons, sensors, data fusion, propulsion, optimal manning concepts, smart control systems and self-defense systems.” It is billed as a small, fast and affordable core ship which can be adapted to three different mission packages including the anti-submarine warfare mission package to hunt and neutralize submarines, the mine warfare mission package which has the capability to hunt, neutralize and if necessary destroy mines and the surface warfare mission package which is what the USS Fort Worth has. Fire victim identified By CARMEN ENSINGER Greene Prairie Press Officials have released the name of the woman who died in a trailer fire in Carrollton July 28 as Katrina D. Baker, 39, but the cause of the blaze remains undetermined. Carrollton Fire Department was called to a trailer fire at 208 South Main at around 2:30 a.m., July 28. The front of the trailer was fully involved when firefighters arrived and Baker’s body was found on the floor in the living room. Greene County Coroner Dean Bishop pronounced Baker dead at the scene. An autopsy was performed at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, but it could be six weeks before toxicology reports

come back and Baker’s cause of death is determined. The state fire marshal was called in to determine the cause of the blaze. “They came down, but there were so many things which could have started the blaze that they couldn’t determine the cause,” Carrollton Fire Protection District Fire Chief Tim Thaxton said. “The cause of the blaze will probably go as undetermined.” Thaxton said Baker’s two children were living with her in the trailer, but they were not home at the time of the fire. There were no other injuries in the incident, but a vehicle in the yard was damaged and the fire was so hot it melted the siding on a house next door.

Carrollton chickens closer to being legal By CARMEN ENSINGER Greene Prairie Press Carrollton council members inquired at their workshop on Wednesday, July 30, as to the status of an amendment to the current animal ordinance, which would allow chicken owners to keep their foul without penalty of a fine. Anne Clough, city attorney who was tasked with drafting an amendment, had several questions she asked the council to weigh in on. “Do you want to have some kind of penalty for violation of the ordinance? That is something we have not talked about,” Clough said. “Do you want to have a fine, do you want to revoke them after so many violations?” Alderman Wayne Cunningham suggested $50 for a violation and after three violations a permit is revoked for at least a year. The rest of the council agreed with Cunningham. Another issue Clough brought up for clarification deals with the neighbors giving the OK for someone to have chickens. Clough wanted to know if the city was going to get the neighbors to sign off on allowing chickens or if this would be up to the prospective chicken owner.

“How would we know if they said it was OK?” Clough asked. Police Chief Kenny Kallal, the husband of Clough, backed up his wife. “I think you are going to have some people who don’t really want the chickens around but they don’t want to make their neighbor mad,” he said. “They don’t want to tell their neighbor ‘Hey, I don’t really want you to have chickens.’” All of the immediate neighbors on either side and front and back must agree to allow the chickens before an individual would be granted a permit to have the chickens. Alderman Tom Wilson suggested a meet-in-the-middle approach. “We can let the chicken person submit it and then follow it up ourselves with phone calls to the neighbors,” he said. Should one neighbor disagree with having chickens around him, the permit would not be granted. It was agreed that both the coop and pen should be a minimum of two feet away from the neighbor’s property line, and the permit will be $25, and will be a yearly fee. If Clough finishes the changes, the issue could be voted on by the council at the Aug. 13 regular city council meeting.

Carrollton (Continued from A1) talk to you five times and you are never here,” Butler said. “I told him I will talk to you personally and tell you to call him because he is mighty unhappy.” Butler also addressed two rumors. She said she heard a city police car and police truck were drag racing in front of Bucks, and the incident was posted on Facebook. She said she also heard the city did not have a police officer on duty the night of a deadly trailer fire.

Kallal said they were both just that – rumors. “We have someone on duty all of the time,” he said. The council also discussed changing the meeting dates from the second Wednesday of the month back to the second Tuesday after the first Monday, which was when the meetings were held for years until the council changed it around a year ago. The council will approve the change at the regular meeting on Aug. 13.

(Continued from A1) “We have adopted a modularity concept to it which allows us to keep it updated piece by piece,” Bridgewater said. “We compare it to a home computer – if you have a mouse or keyboard that needs updated, you don’t have to go out and buy a whole new computer, you just buy a new mouse or keyboard.” In other words, as technology advances, these advances can simply be added or switched out without having to commission the construction of a whole new ship. “It employs a plug and play architecture, so it’s a lot cheaper because we can easily take out the old and plug in the new,” Bridgewater said. “It’s a lot cheaper, requires fewer tax

dollars, and we get a better return on our investment.” Bridgewater said the LCS ships cost a little more than $300,000,000, compared to spending a couple billion dollars for one warship. The USS Fort Worth is expected to deploy later this year on its maiden deployment and operate out of Singapore. It is the second ship of the LCS Freedom variant and the first ship to bear the name of the city of Fort Worth, Texas. Bridgewater is the son of Amelia and the late Sidell Bridgewater. Extension releases update on grain drying Although harvest season is still some time away, producers are already preparing for potentially very large yields. Last year’s late harvest required a lot of drying, which consumed an unexpectedly large amount of propane. This was one factor in the huge increases in propane prices seen during the winter. According to Extension Ag Engineer Kenneth Hallevang and Extension Educator Carl Pederson (North Dakota State University), grain drying may be the most energy-intensive operation of a cropping system. Any improvements that reduce energy needs make a major difference in total farm fuel needs. Reducing over drying, recovering heat, or using natural air for drying

will reduce energy costs. There is something that can be done to cut back on energy costs for every type of dryer. The following are some recommendations they provide. Don’t remove moisture to levels below those required for storage or marketing, which reduces the quantity available to sell and increases drying costs. Ensure your moisture meter is accurate by comparing it’s reading to one at an elevator or to a reference. Apply a temperature adjustment to the meter reading if it is not done automatically. Some moisture testers are not accurate when the grain is measured at elevated temperatures so make sure you know what the requirements are for your tester to get an accurate result.

GREENFIELD NEWS By MARY LOVE HAMMON

Saturday Debbie and Beth Fields hosted a family cookout. Guests included Alan Fields and friend and daughter Hanna of Palmyra, Jim and Beth Fields and children Logan and Dani of Jerseyville, Brian Guess and fiancé Tanya of St. Louis, Mo. Baxter and Donna Maggart treated Norma Maggart for an out-oftown car ride and sundaes. On the ground at the back of Clifton D. and Shirley C. Hammon’s Sherman home is a carpet of stone where they have picnic tables, umbrellas and a gas operated grill. For the third time Clifton D. smelled gas; the company came and replaced the regulator. Thank God for our protection (angels). Pam Armold made an extra trip to my house with green beans and ripe tomatoes from their garden. Bless her and Jim! Today I had a nice chat with Rosemary Maple rives; she and her mother were going to Charity Baptist Church to prepare for Bible school. Rev. Hans came to my house with prayers, anointing oil and Holy Communion after services at the White hall Presbyterian Church. He is recovering from an old-fashioned appendectomy. In his absence Rev. Kirby Ballard filled the pulpit in White Hall. During summer vacations in the Great River Roads Presbyterian District Rev. Charlotte is preaching. Their son is doing well in Vienna, Austria. Rev. Hans took their son to Chicago where he departed for Austria. It used to be seventeen hours in the air. July 21, 2014 the National US Veteran Convention was held in St. Louis, Mo. September 1938 Uncle Si Jennings, retired Naval of WWI, took my mother Caroline Jennings Love to St. Louis to one of these national conventions. When Vickie Robinson married Charles Fugua at the Presbyterian Church in Cruley, Colo. She floated down the aisle to the strains of “The Star-Spangled Banner” as one of our great bands marched by. Yes, it was a US Veterans National Convention. Another great and fulfilling day! Cousin Bev Still telephones being so happy that sister Linda has a van with a wheelchair and lift. Her daughter-in-law Sharry Pohlman drives her for the hairdo, nails, eating out and shopping. This wears me out just writing about it. Jim Dalton of East Peoria is secretary of a GHS reunion class. Frank Thieband got the gang together; they met in Jacksonville. John Waltrip and Tom Wyatt’s names were mentioned. Jim said, “I have a grand-

daughter going to college in Ohio.” Amelia Burger has completed treatments and will drive for her prosthetic, staying with a niece nearby. Some of Barb Kahl’s youngins’ came one day and painted her living room and hallway in readiness for new carpet and furniture. The next day more than one hundred cousins attended an all-day get-together in a community hall east of Hillsboro. Quote Barb, “I was so tired that I thought I’d have to crawl down the hall to my bed.” I’m anxious for my caretaker to come read my letter from Bob Price who still lives in Litchfield Park, Ariz. Former Greenfieldian Bob Price wrote me a thank you note telling me how he enjoyed my column. When Dale and I were first married Bob was in GCHS and lived with his parents Leo and Florence Price across the street from us on South Main Street. His brother, Julian departed for the US Army WWII with teas in my eyes, I watched Bob hug his brother and say, “Goodbye Tuffy.” Their sister Lucille was in St. Louis training to be an RN. Bob’s father was a rural mail carrier. His mother, a saleslady for Hamilton’s Dry Goods. North of us, near the square, bob’s grandmother Price (her maiden name was Kinser) resided with a daughter Lorla who was my beautician. She wore white uniforms and had beautiful auburn hair. Quote bob, “My daughter, Jennie Lee Price Voyce, and her family took a road trip this summer and went back to the Greenfield area to see where I grew up. They wanted to see the Kinser Cemetery and got in touch with Helen Kinser, my father’s second cousin, who was kind enough to meet Jennie and family in Greenfield and led a procession to the cemetery. Jennie also had a chance to meet Bill Kinser, Guy Kinser, Jr. and Mike Kinser, who is instrumental in caring for the upkeep of the cemetery. My daughter and her family were all very appreciative of the hospitality of Helen and family. And they loved seeing the cemetery, all the old graves and Jennie commented on how beautiful it was and so well maintained. They also saw the house I was born in at 711 south Main Street. All in all, it was a very enjoyable day in Greenfield, In search of one’s roots! That can’t be bad!! I’m still here in Arizona and each day is a gift. I will be turning 88 on my next birthday, unless of course, I decide not to have another birthday, and turn it down!” ‘Til next time!

p.m. Scores of hummingbirds are expected to be present to “wow” Festival visitors. Vernon Kleen, a licensed hummingbird bander and associated with the Lincoln Land Association of Bird Banders, will begin the festival with a short discussion about hummingbirds and explain why they are banded. After the discussion, hummingbirds will be captured and banded. There is no admission charge for this family event and visitors may stay as long as they wish. Visitors may also “adopt” a bird by making a $5 donation to the Lincoln Land Association of Bird Banders. Donors will receive an attractive signed certificate, be given the privilege of releasing their adopted birds (if enough birds are captured), and will be notified if their birds are ever recaptured. If hummingbirds appeal to you, then plan on visiting the Engel Farm Hummingbird Festival. It should be a very rewarding experience. The festival may be reached by taking Rt. 267, turning east onto 2700N (which is 1 mile south of the Greene/ Morgan county line) for 2 miles, then north into the long driveway. Hummingbird Festival signs will be posted at Rt. 267 and 2700N and at the entry driveway. The Lincoln Land Association of Bird Banders is a not-for-profit organization to perform sound scientific studies and educational services to monitor, protect and enhance the populations of Illinois’ native birds and their unique environments.

How to help kids transition back to the classroom just to waking up early each day. In addition, serve breakfast, lunch and dinner at the same time you typically serve it during the school year so kids' bodies can begin to readjust as well. n Take kids along when shopping for school supplies. If you plan to buy your child a new computer or other supplies for the upcoming school year, take him or her along on your shopping trips. Kids who get to choose their supplies might be more excited about returning to school than those youngsters who are given what they need without offering their input. n Monitor or assign summer reading. Many students are given summer reading lists to keep their minds sharp over the summer and prepare them for upcoming coursework. Parents should monitor kids' progress on such reading lists and even discuss the books with their kids when possible. Read the books along with them if you think it will help engage them. If kids were not assigned summer reading lists at the end of the school year, assign your own books, rewarding kids

when they finish a new book. Kids who read throughout the summer may be more likely to start the school year off on the right foot than those who don't crack a book all summer. n Encourage kids to sign up for extracurricular activities. Many school-aged athletes get a head start on the new school year by trying out for sports teams. Such tryouts often commence a week or two before a school year is scheduled to begin, and this can help kids ease their way back into the school year. But even nonathletes can begin pursuing extracurricular activities before the first school bell of the year rings. Theater programs may begin auditions or encourage interested youngsters to attend orientation meetings before the dawn of the school year, and such sessions can be a great and pressure-free way for kids to ready themselves for a new school year. The arrival of a new school year can be both exciting and daunting. But parents can help their youngsters readjust to school in various ways after a relaxing summer.

The dawn of a new school year is an exciting time. Kids may not want to say goodbye to days spent lounging by the pool, but such disappointment is often tempered by the prospect of returning to school with friends. For parents, getting kids ready for a new school year is about more than updating their wardrobe or organizing carpools with fellow parents. Reacclimating kids to the routine of school after a relaxing summer is a significant undertaking, and the following are a handful of ways for parents to get a head start as the school year draws closer. n Establish a routine over the last few weeks of summer. Summer vacations typically lack the structure of the school year, and that lack of structure can help kids unwind and make the most of the freedom that summer vacation provides. But as summer starts to wind down, parents can begin to reintroduce some structure into their kids' lives to make the transition back to school go more smoothly. Free activities and free entertainment for youth and families will give Illinois State Fair visitors a chance to sample great ways to spend time in the great outdoors in Illinois at Conservation World at this year’s state fair, on Aug. 8-17 in Springfield. Conservation World, the 30-acre park with grass, shade trees, and ponds, is located on the northwest corner of the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Conservation World is open to state fair visitors on weekend days (both Saturdays and Sundays of the fair) from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. and on weekdays during the fair (Monday-Friday) from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. Conservation World is easily accessible through a pedestrian gate near the Junior Livestock Building, and via a state fair tram stop next to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) headquarters. “Free activities and entertainment for youth and families are a tradition at Conservation World, and we want Illinoisans of all ages to visit and make memories at the Illinois State Fair this year,” said IDNR Director Marc Miller. “We will show state fair visitors great ways for youth to spend time outdoors and enjoy outdoor recreation – all of which are part of Governor Pat Quinn’s initiative to the ‘Leave No Child Inside’ in Illinois.” Traditional free activities for youth at Conser-

Immunizations are one of the top 10 public health accomplishments of the 20th Century according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). During August, National Immunization Awareness Month, Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck encourages people to speak with their health care provider, not only about vaccines needed for children, but for adults as well. “Vaccines are an important step in protecting against serious, and sometimes deadly, diseases,” said Dr. Hasbrouck. “Vaccines are recommended throughout our lives. They are proven to protect children from 14 serious diseases before they turn two years old, adolescents from cancer caused by certain types of HPV, young adults from meningitis, people of all ages from flu, and aging populations from various illnesses.” Each week during National Immunization Awareness Month, IDPH will highlight vaccinations for a different population on Facebook at IDPH.Illinois. While immunizations have significantly reduced the incidence of many serious infectious diseases, vaccination rates for some diseases are not meeting national public health goals. However, Illinois is making strides in increasing vaccination coverage. Illinois is one of only five states that showed a significant increase (12 percent) in one or more doses of HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine coverage in girls from 2012 to 2013, and one of only four states with a significant increase (almost 13 percent) in three or more doses of HPV vaccine. Eldred Baptist Church news As reported by Mary Eustace Don Carpenter – Interim Pastor Our service today, Aug. 3, 2014 was filled with the Holy Spirit. Our church pews are filling up with members and guest hungry to hear how God is working in our lives. Pastor Don’s sermon came to us after the blessing of communion. Again, we were reminded of the accountability of a sincere heart for Jesus. The judgment of your actions before taking the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in communion is our own responsibility.. Pastor Don gave all of us an assignment. Read Galatians. Read it again and again. There are six chapters. Watch how God prepares you for each week’s sermon in this series. Watch how God changes your heart and watch how God shows you how to live in “freedom” towards Him. Today’s message was on freedom- prepared, called and equipped. Galatians 1: 11-24. The defense of the

gospel (vs. 11 – 12), Paul’s former life (vs. 13-14) and God’s plan for us (vs. 15-16). God never calls us to something He has not prepared us for…He never equips us for something He hasn’t called us to… What has God been calling you to do? Whatever it is – He’s prepared you, He’s called you, He’s equipped you…. Now fulfill your calling! Again, we have the freedom to make a choice in our life. Share your God given talents in fellowship. Our church has a dedicated Bible Study Group that meets every Thursday morning at 10 am. If you are interested, please call Thea Adcock at (217) 9832724. Pastor Don will be starting up a Men’s Bible Study Group on Sunday evening September 14 at 6:30 to 8 pm in the Fellowship Hall. The study is based off of Jim George’s book “A Man after God’s Own Heart”. This

study is open to all men (from EBC or not) but advance sign-up is preferred to ensure a book for everyone. Please call Pastor Don at (618) 751-0007 for more information. Our Sunday services include Sunday school at 9 a.m. for adults and children's classes and regular services at 10 a.m. Our services are always open, please come and join us. If you need spiritual service or counsel, please don't hesitate to contact our church. You may reach Pastor Don at (618) 751-0007. You may also reach Pastor Don at doncarp@hotmail.com. Vacation Bible School Aug 4 -8th / 6 – 8:30 pm. In the coming weeks, several people will be celebrating new life in Christ through Baptism. If you are interested in learning more about Baptism and possibly participating in this celebration or joining our fellowship through formal membership, please contact Pastor Don soon!

The right watering can make all the difference in a lush lawn Proper watering is essential when trying to restore or maintain a lush green lawn. If watered incorrectly, a lawn can be susceptible to a host of problems, including insect infestation, weak roots and disease. When watering a lawn, especially when temperatures start to soar in the summer, it's easy to think a lawn needs more water and needs it during those hours of the day when the sun is at its most intense. However, those are two common misconceptions about watering. The following are a handful of tips for homeowners who want to help their lawns endure the summer heat and maintain their lush appeal into the fall. n Water when temperatures are mild. In the summertime, humans typically need water when temperatures are at their most extreme, but that does not mean lawns should be watered when temperatures soar. Water attracts the sun, so watering when temperatures are at their hottest, which is typically around midday and into early afternoon, will likely lead to brown spots indicative of a burned lawn. That's because the sun will be drawn to the water, bearing down on the lawn and burning the grass as a result. When summer arrives, a

lawn is best watered when temperatures are at their most mild. That often translates to early morning or early evening. An added benefit of watering when temperatures are on the mild side is less water will be lost to evaporation during this time, meaning you won't be wasting water. n Situate sprinklers to conserve water. Homeowners who won't be hand watering their lawns should make sure their sprinklers are placed properly throughout their property. Situate sprinklers so they aren't watering driveways, walkways or patios. All of the water should be going to the grass, especially when drought restrictions are in place and the amount of watering the law allows is limited. It's also important to make sure water from sprinklers isn't being blocked from reaching the grass by trees. Homeowners with especially large trees on their property should consider hand watering the grass beneath such trees to ensure these areas receive adequate water. n Lean on mulch. Homeowners tend to fear drought for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that drought can cause a green lawn to turn brown, potentially affecting property value and robbing a landscape of its beauty.

But there are ways to help the soil retain moisture when temperatures are especially hot and dry. Mulch around trees, flower beds, gardens and shrubs can help homeowners get the most bang for their watering buck. That's because mulch retains moisture, even when temperatures are especially hot. This helps foster stronger root growth and healthier landscapes that are less susceptible to disease and insect infestation. n Get to know your lawn. Several variables combine to determine how much water a lawn needs. Understanding these variables helps homeowners understand how much to water their own lawns. Local climate is a variable to consider, as is whether or not a lawn was fertilized (experts typically recommend a lawn be fertilized several times, beginning in the spring and ending in October). Soil type and grass type also help to determine how much water a lawn needs, and homeowners who need to determine the type of soil and grass on their property can consult a local lawn care center or landscaping professional. Proper watering can help a lawn survive the dog days of summer, and it's up to homeowners to learn the right techniques.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Hillview Baptist Church news Bro. Jason Holliman, Pastor Alice Ford, reporter Announcements: This is our church's week to help with the summer lunch program. There will be no Bible Study Wednesday evening due to our church is helping Grace in Winchester with their VBS. Next Saturday evening at 6:30 we will be showing the movie "Son of God" at 6:30 p.m. Finger foods will be served around 5:30 p.m. before the

movie. Everyone welcome. It's Free. On Sunday Aug. 31 there will be a luncheon of sandwiches, salads and desserts following morning worship service. Also that evening is the 5th Sunday Hymn Sing at 7 p.m. Message: Luke 17:11-19 Giving thanks! There were 10 lepers who were healed, but only 1 returned to thank Jesus for his healing. How many times are we like those nine lepers? When problems arise we pray to God for help, but when He

answers our prayers we fail to thank Him. We work hard for our bosses for our paychecks. If our bosses ask us to do something they do not accept our excuses for not doing the task. Why do we want God to accept our excuses? Don't use excuses not to do God's bidding. Most of all don't forget to thank God!!! Hope to see you in church next Sunday.

Walkerville Baptist Church news Rev, David Slagel, Pastor What beautiful fall weather we had for a few days and then summer came back to stay for a while. We really need rain, which we will get before next week. Good to have the vacationers back. These are words from the Pastor’s desk, after all these things the Gentiles seek, for your heavenly father know that you are in need of all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6: 32-33. What’s your greatest need today? Whatever it is financial, relational, physical or emotional, it’s included in that universal all. Jesus said all things. May God bless you.

The question was forgotten so they all looked it up. Who had frogs beside his bed? Psalms 105: 30 God did this to King Saul Col. 1: 1-14 was the message. Paul talking to all his saints (and all of us): Pray with strength and power and names, God knows our needs. Very good message. Our prayer list is: remember the Steckel family, also remember that farming is the most dangerous occupation there is. There are more people killed in farm accidents than any other occupation. Farmers be careful. Also, Andy Ross, Grace Ross, Vera Sprong, Debbie Gillis, Courtney Stevens, Larry Phillips family, the Garner Family, Susie Kiefer, Ed Crabtree,

Betty Newman, Melanie Mast, Jane Smith, Ann Ford, Ray and Patty Baldes and all our church family. Thought for the day: Try getting up on your way down before you hit bottom. There is more ways than one. Give it a lot of thought. Never run out of time. Remember that time has a way of moving quickly and catching us unaware of the passing years. Walkerville has been a church for many years before in homes and school buildings. Where two or more are gathered in my name, I am there. Come and be with us and make his spirit strong and Jesus happy. Jesus loves you and we all do too. See you in church Sunday.

Be Happy at Work We all know that work can sometimes be mind-numbingly boring, difficult to the point of frustration, and stifling to the soul. But, it can also be exciting, provide a sense of accomplishment, and allow us to serve God by serving our fellow man. So, how do we ensure that we have more of the latter and less of the former? There is considerable evidence that what makes workers happy is a sense of agency, the sense that they are effective at what they are doing and that it is worthwhile work. What this really boils down to is doing something that you are good at. So, if you're in a job or career that you don't feel particularly suited to, you're probably not feeling great about your work. In that case, you should probably either retrain for a different job or work on the skills that will make you more effective in your current job. God has given all of us specific talents, and if we can incorporate those into our work we are bound to be happier and more effective. But, even if you aren't particularly good at what you do or happy where you work, do your best to put on a happy face each day at work. Sometimes happiness at work, like happiness in life, is just a choice that we make. - Christopher Simon

Work hard and cheerfully at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.

Practice makes perfect for junior footballers

Carmen Ensinger/Greene Prairie Press

(Left) Lance Schnelt practices taking the hand-off from Finn Bowman during Carrollton Junior League Football practie recently which was held at the high school. (Above) Ian Cummins, left, and Matt Retherford take a breather from Junior League Football Practice in Carrollton recently.

National governing body makes football rule changes In an effort to reduce contact above the shoulders and lessen the risk of injury in high school football, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Football Rules Committee – of which the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) is a member – developed a definition for “targeting,” which will be penalized as illegal personal contact. The definition of targeting and its related penalty were two of 10 rules changes approved by the rules committee at its January 24-26 meeting in Indianapolis. All rules changes were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors. Effective with the 2014 high school season, new Rule 2-43 will read as follows: “Targeting is an act of taking aim and initiating contact to an opponent above the shoulders with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulders.” Bob Colgate, NFHS director of sports and sports medicine and liaison to the Football Rules Committee, said the committee determined – in its continued effort to minimize risk of injury in high school football – that it was important to separate and draw specific attention to this illegal act. “Taking aim with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulders to initiate contact above the shoulders, which goes beyond making a legal tackle, a legal block or playing the ball, will be prohibited,” Colgate said. A new definition for a “defenseless player” was also added to Rule 2 for risk-minimization purposes. Rule 2-32-16 will read as follows: “A defenseless player is a player who, because of his physical position and focus of concentration, is especially vulnerable to injury.” In an effort to reduce the risk of injury on kickoffs, the rules committee approved two new requirements in Rule 6-1-3 for the kicking team. First, at least four members of the kicking team must be on each side of the kicker, and, second, other than the kicker, no members of the kicking

team may be more than five yards behind the kicking team’s free-kick line. Rule 6-1-3 also notes that if one player is more than five yards behind the restraining line and any other player kicks the ball, it is a foul. In addition to balancing the kicking team’s formation, the change limits the maximum distance of the run-up for the kicking team. “The Football Rules Committee’s actions this year reinforce a continued emphasis on minimizing risk within all phases of the game,” said Brad Garrett, assistant executive director of the Oregon School Activities Association and chair of the Football Rules Committee. In other changes, new language was added to Rule 8-5-1 and states that “the accidental touching of a loose ball by a player who was blocked into the ball is ignored and does not constitute a new force.” In addition, roughing the passer fouls now include all illegal personal contact fouls listed in Rule 9-4-3, which result in automatic first down in addition to a 15-yard penalty. The remaining changes approved by the Football Rules Committee are as follows: Rule 1-1-7: Provides state associations authority to require game officials to be on the field more than 30 minutes prior to game time. Rule 2-24-9: The intent of an illegal kick was clarified. Now, when an illegal kick occurs, the loose ball retains the same status that it had prior to the illegal kick. Rules 3-3-3 and 3-3-4: With this change, in order to extend or not extend a period with an untimed down, time must expire during the down. Football is the No. 1 participatory sport for boys at the high school level with 1,115,208 participants in the 201213 school year, according to the High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted by the NFHS through its member state associations. In addition, the survey indicated there were 1,660 girls who played football in 2012-13.
