Fire destroys three homes in three days By ROBERT LyONS Jersey County Journal Three Jersey County homes were destroyed by fire in as many days. The first fire occurred late Saturday afternoon, around 4:15 p.m., in the 24900 block of Illinois Route 3, between Dow and Grafton. Firefighters from QEM, Fieldon, Brighton and Godfrey battled the blaze, but the home of two residents was lost. “The problem we had is it burnt exceptionally hot,” QEM Fire Chief Gerry New said, noting the original

structure was built around 1850. “It was an old farm house. The second story and first story both collapsed inside the structure and prevented us from getting inside of it.” New said there were family pets inside the home, which perished in the fire, but the owners of the home were unharmed. The second devastating fire occurred later Saturday evening,

around 7:55 p.m., at 506 Easton St. in Jerseyville. According to Jerseyville Fire Chief Alan Gowin, the home was a total loss. Gowin did not have details on the occupants of the home, other than no one was injured and that it is a rental property. Then on Monday, QEM responded to a call around 1 p.m. in the 26100 block of Beltrees Road. New said the fire was fully involved when firefighters arrived on scene. Brighton, Jerseyville and Godfrey fire departments were called to assist. But, again New said the fire burned too hot to save the structure. New said one adult male lived in the home, and is now staying with family members. The cause of the three fires is still undetermined. Gowin said the Jerseyville blaze is being investigated by an insurance company. New said the two fires his firefighters battled will remain undetermined. “Every bit of possible evidence was probably destroyed,” New said. Though the departments dealt with a rash of fires in a relatively short amount of time, neither fire chief believes anything is out of the ordinary. “There’s no rhyme or reason to it, it just happens,” Gowin said. “I think it’s just a freak coincidence, truthfully,” New said. “I don’t suspect any foul play on either one of ours, none.”

The home at 506 Easton Street in Jerseyville was completely destroyed by fire Saturday, Nov. 30. Two other homes in the county were also destroyed in the past week, one of which was also on Saturday.

District 100 bids for floor, ceiling replacement at West By BOB CROSSEN Jersey County Journal The Jersey Community Unit School District 100 will conduct a health life safety project during winter break for West Elementary to combat deteriorating tile and aging ceilings. During a board meeting Nov. 20, district administrator Ken Schell said the

building and grounds committee took a walk through the western corridor of West Elementary School and concluded the floor and ceiling tile needed to be replaced. “A lot of the tile, because of the age, the glue is not holding anymore and every time they go in there to clean those floors, tiles are coming up. The more they come up and the more we

try to keep them down, the edges start crumbling,” Schell said. He said the district will contract a company to remove the tiles in the corridor, which is also poorly lit, a problem that could be addressed as part of the project when replacing ceiling tiles. The administrator said he met with an architect whose original cost estimate for the project was $79,000. To

reduce labor costs, Schell said the district’s maintenance department will lay down new tile in the summer rather than contract out the work. He said removal of the tiles cannot be done by the district’s maintenance department because those employees are not certified to remove such a large quantity of asbestos tile. B_st trip _v_r: I’d like to buy an ‘E’ By ROBERT LyONS Jersey County Journal An Elsah native has solved the puzzle of a lifetime; how to land a spot on hit game show “Wheel of Fortune.” Kaydi Legate, 23, recently competed on the decades-old syndicated game show in an episode scheduled to air in March 2014. Though filming for the show took her on her first trip to Los Angeles, the

journey began much earlier. “I have a game show addiction in general, but 'Wheel of Fortune' has always been my favorite,” Legate said. A former owner of handheld and boardgame versions of “Wheel,” the show has been a focal point of Legate’s entire life. When the 2008 Jersey Community High School graduate turned 23 on June 29, she went with a group of six friends and family members to the Wheelmobile event at Lumiere Place Casino in St. Louis in an effort to fulfill a longtime goal of qualifyC

ing for the show. But, it was her best friend, Liz Wall, who was called up for an audition. “She kept asking them if we could trade places, but they said, ‘No, that’s against the rules,’” Legate said. Organizers suggested they try for Best Friends Week, which they signed up for. Legate, however, got the lone callback for a second, more in depth audition session in St. Louis in October. To make it to Los Angeles, Legate had to show she was logical, (See, wheel, A2)

Four of the contested primary elections involve seats on the county board. Board member Donna Moore is not seeking reelection for her seat in District One while the remaining seats in Districts Two, Three and Four all have incumbents running for office. Four individuals are running for election in District One for Moore’s seat with contested primaries on both sides of the political aisle. Don Walsh Jr. and Wayne Schell are running on the Democratic ticket while Jarrod Hayes and Ken Grizzle are running as Republicans. In District Two, incumbent John Houseman is running as a Republican against Democrat Sandy Hefner, a former county board member. Incumbent Rhonda Linders and former board member Ron Henerfouth will contest each other in the Republican primary in district three. Incumbent Gary Hayes is running uncontested as a Democrat for his seat in District Three. In District Four, incumbent Gary G. By BoB CRossen Jersey County Journal The Jersey County Business Association awarded WellSpring Resources in Jerseyville Business of the Month for November after three years of operations in the county. WellSpring Resources began in 1959 in Alton through the use of county funds for mental health service. It was originally called the Community Counseling Center of Northern Madison County, but made the switch to a new facility and name in 2011. The Jerseyville office opened in 2010 to serve a wider community of people seeking help through counseling, psychiatric or medical help for mental wellness or to overcome substance abuse. “We saw a need for behavioral health services in the Jersey County community, so when an opportunity arose to expand, we took it,” Janette Heath, director of Jerseyville WellSpring services, said. “It is part of our mission to make treatment for mental health conditions and substance abuse disorders as accessible as possible.”

District 100 (Continued from A1) “Our guys can do a little bit. They’ve got a license to do a small job. If we have one or two tiles that need to be removed, they have the license to do that,” Schell said, “but because of the magnitude of this job, you’ve got to have a different license.” By sourcing the work internally, Schell said the estimated cost dropped to $55,500, some of which will be part of the district’s levy to be approved during its regular meeting Dec. 18 after a truth in taxation hearing. The district has around $30,000 in funds for West Elementary health life safety repairs, and Schell said the district could use those funds to offset the cost. Removal of the floor and ceiling tiles are scheduled to begin Dec. 20, the evening after students leave for winter break. Schell said the contractors would be required to remove all of the floor tile and ceiling tile during break and seal the concrete floor before teachers return to the school Jan. 3. The time-sensitive nature of the work was detailed in the bidding process, Schell said, noting many contractors are searching for jobs in the colder months when work opportunities are limited. part of it all. “It was something that I’ve wanted to do since I was little,” she said. “It was like a lifelong dream coming true. It was a lot of fun.” She said compared to her perception from a lifetime of watching “Wheel of Fortune,” being on the set in person was not exactly what she had expected. “It’s actually really different than what you see on TV,” she said. “The wheel is a lot smaller than they make it look, but it’s a lot harder to spin than you would think. I literally had to use my entire body weight to spin the wheel.” Though she’s spent many years solving the show’s puzzles from the comfort of her own living room, trying to perform under pressure was a new challenge. “When you’re standing up there with all the cameras in your face and Pat Sajak standing right beside you, it’s a lot more nerve racking than you think it would be,” she said. Legate is the daughter of Bob and Jeri Legate. She is currently a student at the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine. Legate’s episode of “Wheel of Fortune” is scheduled to air March 17, 2014, and is broadcast locally on KSDK Channel 5.

believe the work can be completed during the time frame, Schell said the district would hold off until a later date to complete the work. During the November school board meeting, Schell said the scarcity of work would produce competitive bids, and during a pre-bidding meeting Dec. 2, Schell said five companies expressed interest in the work. Though the floor tiles would not be installed until the summer after school ends next year, Schell said ceiling tile could be installed while students attend classes. “We’ll probably come back with ceiling tile as school is going on,” Schell said, adding improvements to the lighting in the area could be completed while the ceiling is replaced. “The grids will still be intact. All we’ll have to do is put the actual tile in the grid.” He said there are other tiles in the school which are also asbestos but have held up to the regular wear and tear through the school year. Future replacements would be necessary as the tiles deteriorate and cause safety issues, he said. The board approved to seek bids for the project during its meeting in November, and Schell said the district will have its regular bidding Dec. 6 at 3 p.m.

By RoBeRt Lyons Jersey County Journal Thirty years of teaching art apparently wasn’t enough. Just months after retiring from a long career in Jersey County schools, Nancy Goetten is once again the head of the class. Only this time, instead of a room full of school-aged pupils, Goetten’s students range from 4-year-old girls to older adults, depending on the night of the week. Goetten turned the dining room of her Jerseyville home into a paint studio and classroom combo for her new business, Gettin’ Artsy. A session with Goetten includes around two-and-a-half hours of instruction and brush on canvas time. The results have been universally pleasing, according to Goetten. “They usually come in and say, ‘I have no artistic ability.’ Their canvases usually turn out better than mine,” she said. “I love that nonartistic hidden talent.” Tina Bennett said she describes herself as having no artistic background, but came away with a painting she is proud of. Bennett participated in Goetten’s class on Saturday, Nov. 30, with a group of eight family members “This was quite an adventure. I wasn’t sure how the outcome would be, but it was great. We all had a good time,” Bennett said. “Nancy was a great help. She gave us guidance. By just listening to her we had a great outcome.” During her days teaching in the school setting, Goetten had time to introduce concepts and develop technique within her students. “It’s a cram session. I don’t get into a lot of the perspective and shading,” she said. “I try to simplify it as much as I can, so they will gain their confidence and, hopefully, come back.” Even without the advanced lesson planning, her newest students are still creating works both she and the artists find fulfilling. “It’s unbelievable that we all created something that we’re proud of,” Missy Davis, who attended the session with Bennett, said. But, Goetten won’t go as far as doing the work for her students in

the name of a successful painting. She said since beginning her newest venture back in June, her students commonly ask her to paint parts of their canvasses. “I usually ignore questions like that, and let them get the courage up to do it themselves. If I did it, it really wouldn’t be their masterpiece,” she said. Before beginning a session the group can decide on the subject matter by choosing from an array of painted canvasses on Goetten’s walls or posted to her Facebook page. Though each artist produces a work based on an example, each ends up with their own characteristics. Saturday’s session painted snowmen portraits. “The seasonal things seem to be the most popular,” Goetten said. Goetten said the process is not about replicating her own work, rather to enjoy the process and open

up artistically. She said she provides only vague instruction and encourages the artists to make their own decisions. “If they do something that they don’t like, then they’ve got to work their way out of it, or figure out a solution,” she said. “It’s a great therapy. It’s a vent where they can get away from the world and express. They feel really proud of their work when they leave.” Groups of six to 12 people are ideal for a session at Gettin’ Artsy. Goetten said the program is great for team building, holiday parties, youth groups or even a couples night. She welcomes students to bring their own snacks and beverages. Though the program began as an art night in June at Wild Pickins Winery in Chesterfield – the popularity of which drove her to offering classes at other times – she said guests enjoy the classes being held

in her home. “They like the warm, welcoming atmosphere with the dog running around,” she said. “My husband (Tom) is awesome. He’s welcomed everyone in pretty much five nights a week.” The classes are still being held at Wild Pickins, as well. Goetten said she is booked into the summer and fall of 2014 at the winery. Still, she said she may be expanding yet again in the near future. “I’m thinking about getting a place up on State Street, and maybe giving them just a little splash of color,” she said. So, as far as taking a break from teaching art, there’s not necessarily one in sight. “I don’t even know what retirement means,” she said. The office of sheriff will also have a contested primary as Ray Sinclair and J.T. “Terry” Day will contest for the Republican nomination March 18, 2014. Incumbent Mark Kallal is running uncontested on the Democratic ticket in the primary election. Pam Warford is running on the Republican ticket for county clerk against incumbent Steve Pohlman who is running as a Democrat. Gilbert “Gib” Ashlock is running for re-election for the seat of county treasurer as a Republican and he is being contested by Democrat Danielle Sneider. Voters in the city of Grafton will also decide whether to accept or deny electric aggregation which was approved by Jerseyville voters during the last general election. Obamacare subsidies vary in area counties By Scott ReedeR and JackSon adamS Illinois News Network Insurance premiums for people in their 20s are skyrocketing under Obamacare, leaving serious concerns about the future viability of the entire system. A recently released Heritage Foundation report found that that the cost of purchasing a health insurance policy for an Illinois 27-year-old has more than doubled since the advent of Obamacare. And recruiting young people to enroll is a major goal of the Obama administration, because insurers need healthy customers to offset the cost of caring for those with costly medical needs. A carrot-and-stick approach is taken to get uninsured people to join in the Affordable Care Act’s health insurance exchanges. Subsidies are given to some people who enroll, and fines are levied against those who choose not to buy insurance. The fines amount to either $95 per year or 1 percent of a person’s annual income, whichever is greater. The cutoff level for subsidies is based not only on a person’s income, but also their age and where they live. For example, unmarried 20-yearolds in Jersey County are eligible for subsidized insurance if they earn

people between 19 and 30 have at least a $500 incentive not to buy health insurance under Obamacare and about one-third have a $1,000 incentive not to purchase it,” Conover said. That $1,000 “incentive” represents how much the insurance would cost if they opted to buy it rather than pay the fine, he said.

>>>For example, unmarried 20-year-olds in Jersey county are eligible for subsidized insurance if they earn less than $23,766 a year. the cut-off amount for an unmarried 20-year-old in Pike county is higher -$24,268. “You could argue that they are getting insurance in exchange for paying that money,” Conover said. “But for many young people that is not much of an incentive. The policies generally have high deductibles and people in these age ranges generally are in good health.” Conover predicted that few young people will sign up for Obamacare which will result in risk pools having disproportionate numbers of older and less healthy people. As a result, insurance companies would have to raise their premiums further, he said. “We call it the ‘death spiral.’ The premiums go up so more young

less than $23,766 a year. The cut-off amount for an unmarried 20-year-old in Pike County is higher -- $24,268. But unmarried 60-year-olds living in either county are eligible for subsidized insurance if they earn less than $45,960. “A lot of young people are going to choose to not buy insurance because they are going to figure out that it is cheaper to pay the fine and go without,” said David Hogberg, a health care policy analyst for the National Center for Public Policy Research. This is hardly a small number of people, said Chris Conover, a researcher at Duke University’s School for Health Policy and Inequality. “About one-half of the uninsured

your taxable income, whichever is more?” Families are doing the same calculations. Donna Moore, who lives in Springfield, has three adult children 25 or younger – all of whom are insured either through an employer, the military or Moore’s own policy. She said cost/benefit calculations

people drop out and pay the fine, which results in the premiums going up even more and more people dropping out,” Hogberg said. This already has happened in states that have overregulated the individual health insurance market, Conover said. “Other than out of some sense of civic duty, it’s hard to see why a young person would purchase insurance, especially if they are currently uninsured,” Hogberg said. “If they were to get some subsidy, obviously it might drive the price of a … plan down enough that it might be worth their time. But if they are not going to get a subsidy, why would you do that, and pay at least $100 a month, maybe more, when you could pay a fine of either $95 dollars or 1% of

on insurance are something her family and many others are having to do now. “We don’t like having to pay for things that we don’t use, and we think it is really ridiculous,” Moore said. “But what can we do? … If they don’t pay for the insurance then they’ll have to pay the penalty. So if I’m advising somebody not to sign up for it, I’m putting them in the position of having to pay the penalty.” Josh Archambault, a senior fellow with the Foundation for Government Accountability, anticipates states such as Illinois or the federal government may try to encourage more young people to enroll by increasing the penalty in future years. Lawmakers who support the law want people to focus on its benefits for young people. “We’re hearing so much about what’s wrong that we’re not getting the information out about what’s right,” said state Rep. Monique Davis, D-Chicago. “You can stay on your parent’s insurance until you’re 26 years old. Say you’re a young woman, your insurance is required to give you a mammogram and other procedures that a young woman is required to have. Now if I were a young woman I wouldn’t want to keep the plan I had, I’d want to have those new things included.” Obamacare proponents also point out that having insurance encourages young people to take more steps to avoid health problems. “We need to educate people to go to physicians when they’re healthy, not the emergency room when they are sick,” said state Rep. Sara Feigenholtz, D-Chicago. “Insurance is the way to encourage them to do that.” Unfortunately, the Affordable Care Act may end up having the reverse effect of pricing people out of the insurance market altogether.

Keep safe throughout holidays The Issue: Three homes lost to fire in less than a week Our View: A grim reminder to exercise extreme precaution throughout the holiday season

Publisher and Editor: Julie Boren

T

publisher@campbellpublications.net

here’s no quicker way to ruin the holiday season than to have a major disaster strike at your home, or the homes of loved ones.

In a matter of just a few days, three homes in Jersey County were lost to fire, destroying memories and possessions, as well as displacing several residents. Even though insurance, charities, family and the Red Cross will spring into action to take care of the victims and make the events as painless as possible, a disastrous fire is a traumatic event that may linger for a long time to come. There will simply be items or mementos – especially in the case of the old farm house on Route 3 – that could never be replaced by money or newer versions of keepsakes. Though the causes of all three fires are still undetermined, the holidays bring with them many dangers. Dried out pine trees, deep fried turkeys, candles, space heaters and the extra electrical load of Christmas lights can all present fire hazards. The U.S Fire Administration and Federal Emergency Management Agency have a joint effort online, at usfa.fema. gov, that provides free outreach materials aimed at adult and child audiences. Information about fire risks and tips to avoid danger during the holidays can be found in the materials. Thankfully, no human life was harmed in the course of the fiery weekend – though some pets were lost. Hopefully, the devastation will serve as a grim reminder to the rest of the area’s residents to take extra precaution and keep what is supposed to be a joyous time of year from turning bad. The holidays are a time to remember with fond memories, not as a nightmare.

JOURNAL SEEKING GUEST COLUMNISTS If anyone is interested in submitting a guest column, please contact the Journal. There are many topics out there and we have found that our readers have a lot of thoughtful things to say, on a broad range of topics. Columns, like letters, should add to the public discourse in a helpful way. Guest columns are submitted by a rotating roster of columnists or are simply sent in unsolicited and, if appropriate, are published. These columns do not reflect the views of the newspaper, only the writer. Length is no more than 800 words. Deadlines are Tuesday at 10 a.m. Topics are the choice of the columnist although we encourage our contributors to avoid obviously inflammatory issues (religion, abortion, etc.). Though we are a local paper, contributors are free to write about national or international issues (the pledge, the war, Social Security, health care, etc.). The Journal reserves the right to hold, edit or withdraw a column. These guest columns are an opportunity for our contributors to share an idea, an opinion or information; it is not an opportunity to sell a product or a service. We are looking for informed opinion and lively debate. Our only requirements are that your column have relevance to our community and our readership and be responsibly written (no personal attacks or self promotion, for example).

Is this ‘1984’? Do you remember George Orwell’s novel “1984”? It was a top selling literary political fiction novel published in 1949. The main character was a man named Winston Smith. His job was propaganda and historical revision. He was to rewrite past newspaper articles so that the historical record always supports the current party line. The government even invented a language called “Newspeak” which changed the meaning of words. Every worker lived in a small living space and had a black box that watched the actions of the people living there – the box knew everything. There was no privacy. Some say our televisions are capable of being the “black box.” Today we find ourselves tracked at every street corner. Cell phones, credit cards, 911 addresses, GPS, - our every move is tracked….in 2013 we have no privacy. Glenn Beck’s novel, “Agenda 21” is written in the same political fiction style. People from Beck’s novel were also given a “government living space” and assigned “government jobs.” Children were raised and taught by the government. You can guess what happened to those who could no longer work and needlessly took up space. Have you read Obamacare’s fine print? Christian holidays were not observed in either novel. In 2013, we often find schools and many businesses omitting Merry Christmas and using lame phrases such as “Winter Holiday” or “Season’s Greetings.” God forbid we should offend someone by saying the name of Jesus. According to Wikipedia, “many of “1984’s” terms and concepts, such as Big Brother, doublethink,

thought crime, Newspeak, Room 101, Telescreen, 2+2=5, and memory hole, have entered everyday use since its publication in 1949. Moreover, “1984” popularized the adjective “Orwellilan,” which describes official deception, secret surveillance, and manipulation of the past by a totalitarian or authoritarian state.” How close are we to finding ourselves living in government controlled spaces and working government jobs? Even if you own your home, government occupancy codes and international building codes, along with excessive property taxes, keep your home from ever really being yours. Wherever you work, your job is dictated by government regulations…some good, some bad. To accomplish total control, planners say “in order to change the worldview, the government will have to indoctrinate the minds of the children.” Older people are not easily changed. We know that some history books have already omitted or changed facts (historical revision). Primary subjects are no longer the three R’s – they now have the three E’s which are economy, equity and environment….and they are written in “Newspeak.” Diann Russell is an author and blogger who uses plain language. She said, “There is a multi-front assault on individual sovereignty when it comes to education. With the new Federal education guidelines, you can’t miss the indoctrination element. It’s impossible not to see it. Gone are the days when communities through their PTA, were directly involved with the decisionmaking for their local school. Now, teachers’ unions, working with and funded by the Federal Government,

have the conGuest trol over your Column school. The superintendent BY JOYCE now cares more MORRISON about Federal guidelines and standards than what the Moms and Dads in the community may say. Parents are expected to shut up and leave the education of their children to others.” We are fortunate to live in a small community where parents can still talk with their children’s teachers. But what about large cities where the majority of students are being educated (indoctrinated)? Our local educators have a difficult job because they are forced to comply with federal standards and act as unwilling change agents for the control of the minds of the children…even their own. In 2013, we find the protections given by our Constitution blatantly ignored. The Bill of Rights is fast becoming meaningless. Students are being taught tolerance, diversity and acceptance of everything except Christianity and Sovereignty of the United States….the two foundations our nation was built upon. If you would like more information, you will want to hear KrisAnne Hall, a dynamic nationally known speaker. www.krisannehall.com. She is a Constitutional attorney from Florida who understands 2nd Amendment rights, property rights, personal rights and The Bill of Rights. She will be speaking at the Jersey County Government Building at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5. –––––––––––––––––––––––––– Joyce Morrison is a resident of Fieldon and a guest columnist for the Jersey County Journal.

Give of yourself this Christmas! One of my favorite Christmas stories is that of an African boy who gave his missionary-teacher an unusually beautiful seashell as a Christmas gift. When questioned about the fact that he had to walk a very long distance over rough terrain to bring this gift, he replied, “Long walk part of gift.” Altruism – the giving of one’s self, is often a really lovely gift. Whether it be a phone call to someone alone or volunteering to feed the hungry, giving of one’s time and energy can make others feel loved and cherished. According to O, The Oprah Magazine, it also can produce significant health benefits for the giver. In one study, Harvard students were asked to think about times when they were loving to others. Their immune systems improved. The magazine article noted other studies that show that listening to others lowered the risk of heart disease and that those suffering from pain had their pain reduced by 13 percent when they reached out to help others. After being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, Cami Walker received an unusual prescription from a holistic health educator. He told her to give a gift each day for 29 days – everything from a phone call to a piece of chocolate cake. Although very skeptical at first, she reported that “she is more mobile and less dependent on pain medication. The flare-ups that routinely sent

her to the emergency room have Guest stopped, and scans show that her disease has stopped progressing.” Column (www.nytimes.com/2009/12/01/ BY TIM health/01well.html). MITCHINSON Giving during this time of year echoes the gifts the Magi gave to the baby Jesus. For many, it also reminds us of the gift of love Jesus gave mankind through his teaching and life. His parable of the Good Samaritan illustrated his directive to care for those who were in need. He ended his discourse with “Go, and do thou likewise” (see Luke 10: 30-37). He taught a universal love, which included even one’s enemies. Jesus’ gift to others was a love that stemmed from the divine, and brought health and healing into the lives of many who were diseased, hopeless, and unwanted. As you consider what gifts you will be shopping for this season, remember the simple gift of giving yourself. It not only helps those you reach out to, it also directly benefits your own health. Thomas (Tim) Mitchinson is a self-syndicated columnist writing on the relationship between thought, spirituality and health, and trends in that field. He is also the media spokesman for Christian Science in Illinois. You can contact him at illinois@compub.org.

Jersey County Street Machine Association members are, left to right, Dan Sherwin, Larry Muntz (Pantry Representative), Scott Metzler (Sinclair Foods Manager), Ed DeUel and Gary Peters (club members) shown with 500 servings of food they are donating to Jersey Township Food Pantry. They challenge other area clubs and associations to beat their donation amount.

JCSMA issues food challenge to community organizations The Jersey County Street Machine Association is challenging all area clubs and associations to a Food Challenge. This time of year many of the food pantries are in dire need of food. It seems fitting that those who are blessed should help others in need. J.C.S.M.A. throughout 2013 has collected funds and canned goods at cruises and car shows to be used for food donations. Club members have accumulated over 500 servings of food to be given to Jersey Township Food Pantry. J.C.S.M.A. has donated food and money to local charities every year since the club’s beginning in 1980.

Members also ring bells at Christmas time to help raise funds. The club challenges everyone to do their part in helping others. Please choose one of the many food pantries and provide them with food. Can you beat J.C.S.M.A.’s number of servings? The challenge is on!

Friends, neighbors, cancer survivors, caregivers and anyone interested in learning more about Relay For Life are encouraged to attend. The kick-off event offers information about the American Cancer Society’s mission of saving lives faster by helping people stay well, helping people get well, finding cures and fighting back. Refreshments will be served, and guests will have the opportunity to win prizes and learn more about the exciting activities planned for this year’s Relay For Life. Relay For Life is an overnight event where teams of local businesses, schools, churches, community groups and families build awareness and raise

funds - prior to and at the event - to fight cancer. While the main objective of Relay For Life is to raise money for cancer research and cancer patients, the event helps spread cancer awareness, celebrate the lives of survivors, remember those who lost their lives to cancer and unite a community in the fight against cancer. This year’s American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Jersey County will be held from 5 p.m. Friday, June 6 to 6 a.m. Saturday, June7 at Jersey Community High School, Jerseyville. Volunteers are needed to organize and recruit teams, secure community support, coordinate logistics, obtain refreshments and prizes, assist with publicity and plan entertainment activities for this exciting and energizing event. For more information on the Relay

For Life kick-off celebration, contact the American Cancer Society at (217) 523-4503 opt 3 or visit www.relayforlife.org/jerseyil Teams may register on-line anytime. About the American Cancer Society The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force with more than 100,000 volunteers in Illinois and millions elsewhere, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer, and countless more who have avoided it, will be celebrating birthdays this year. The FDA has approved macitentan (Opsumit) for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) in adults. This is a type of high blood pressure that is associated with the narrowing of vessels in the lungs. It may lead to further heart problems including heart failure, if left untreated. Research that led to the approval of Opsumit came from the SERAPHIN trial that was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. In this study, people who took Opsumit for two years had better management of the symptoms of PAH than people who were not on the medication. Opsumit works by blocking a substance in the body that makes blood vessels more narrow, thereby widening the vessel to have blood flow easier. In clinical trials, some of the most common side effects were low iron in the blood, coldlike symptoms, sore throat and headache. This medication should not be taken by pregnant women because it has the potential to cause harm to the unborn baby. The FDA indicates that it has enacted measures that would make it difficult for an unborn child to be exposed to this medication.

PUBLIC NOTICE

Jerseyville, Illinois

NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC In the past few months there have been discussions at County Board meetings regarding the ICC Building Codes. There seems to be some misconceptions about when you need a licensed contractor. I would like to clarify that you do NOT need a licensed electrician to change a light bulb, replace a ceiling fan or wire your whole house. The County did not adopt the ICC Electrical Code; instead the County chose to do the same as the State of Illinois and adopted the 2005 NEC (National Electric Code). In addition, a homeowner has the right to build his or her home without the use of a contractor providing they follow the current adopted ICC building codes which are no more restrictive than any other building code. If the homeowner decides to sub-contract the roofing or plumbing, then these contractor must be licensed per the 224 ILCS 335 IL Roofing Industry Licensing Act and the 225 ILCS 320 IL Plumbing License Law. All plumbing inspections are performed by the State of IL Plumbing Inspector. You may contact the Jersey County Code Administrator Office for more information at (618) 498-5571 ext 146. ISP conducting ACE patrols

Cause No. 13-MR-45 And TRAVIS J. CRULL, Respondent,

Captain Parsons, District 18 Commander, is announcing that the Illinois State Police (ISP) will conduct Alcohol Countermeasure Enforcement (ACE) patrols in District 18 during the month of December. The ACE patrols allow the ISP to target an area with saturation patrols that focus on preventing, detecting, and taking enforcement action in response to violations associated with impaired driving and illegal transportation or consumption of alcohol and other drugs. Across the country, an average of one alcohol-related traffic death occurs every 51 minutes. Alcohol and drug impairment remain significant factors in nearly 40 percent of all fatal motor vehicle crashes in Illinois. Each year in Illinois, hundreds of lives are lost in alcohol-related crashes. Don’t risk losing your license, your car, and your freedom. If you drive impaired, law enforcement will arrest you. This project is funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Traffic Safety.

NAME CHANGE OF MINOR NOTICE To: TRAVIS J. CRULL. Take notice that the requisite affidavit for publication having been filed notice is given you that a petition has been filed in the Seventh Circuit Court of Jersey County, Illinois, by the Petitioner for change of name of Layla Marie Crull, of the above captioned action and for said relief therein; and that action is currently pending. Lady Piasa Birds win title Jersey wins MVC opener at Thanksgiving tournament

Harris making return to Highland

Sam Elliott Jersey County Journal A 69-33 win against Highland's junior varsity squad Saturday was the final touch on the 12th Southwestern Thanksgiving Tournament championship in 16 years for the Lady Piasa Birds basketball team. The tournament's Most Valuable Player, Southwestern sophomore Madison Greeling, led all scorers with 26 points against Highland after being limited to nine in the Lady Birds' 43-31 win against Wesclin Friday that clinched them a share of the tournament title. "She's a do-it-all player," Southwestern head coach Steve Wooley said. "She handles the ball, she's a playmaker for other kids, hits 3-pointers and takes it to the hole. You can't really ask her to do any more than she already does. I think she's getting more mature and better at knowing how to counter a defense." The Lady Birds took early leads in each of their final two tournament victories. Southwestern already led by 12 points with a 22-10 halftime advantage against Wesclin Friday and was ahead 40-17 by the break against Highland's junior varsity Saturday. "Wesclin had some nice, quick guards that matched up with us pretty good," Wooley said. "Highland’s girls had a lot of balance with some decent size inside and good guards. We just threw different combinations out there to see what worked in different situations." Karlie Green scored a game-high 12 points and Ashlyn Ringhausen added 11 against Wesclin while Erin Laubscher chipped in 11 against Highland. Sophomore forward Kelsey Rhoades, who scored eight points against Wesclin and six against Highland to cap her strong tournament, was named to the event's all-tournament team. "She’s a great post that can step out and shoot, too," Wooley said. "She’s not a big post, but she can pull big people away from the basket." The Lady Birds stretched their winning streak to begin the season to seven games after beating East Alton-Wood River 58-22 Monday on the road. Greeling totaled a

game-high 22 points and Southwestern limited the Lady Oilers to four first-quarter points en route to a 39-10 halftime lead. Laubscher added 12 points and senior Randi Hopkins scored 10 for

Panthers split first four Sam Elliott Jersey County Journal Heading into the season-opening Centralia Tournament, Jersey Community High School boys basketball head coach Stote Reeder thought he'd be happy if his team could go 2-2 at the always-tough tournament. That's just what the Panthers did — beating Mahomet-Seymour and Mascoutah while falling against traditional powerhouses Centralia and Belleville East — but after his shorthanded squad nearly beat Belleville East, Reeder found himself wanting more. "It was very tough competition. I can't say I'm unhappy with how we are, but I really wish we were 3-1 right now," he said. Playing without one starter and its sixth man, Jersey began its final day at the Centralia Tournament against Belleville East and took a 19-16 lead into halftime. The Lancers came out strong in the third quarter and went on to win a 41-36 decision. Kyle Steckel scored a game-high 16 points and Luke Shively added 11 for Jersey. "We had guys step up and really play well, but I’d like to think that we beat Belleville East at full strength," Reeder said. "We just missed some layups." The Panthers ended their run at the round-robin tournament with a 47-43 win against Mascoutah in a game that will count as one of the two Mississippi Valley Conference matchups between the teams. Steckel led Jersey (2-2, 1-0 MVC) with 15 points against the Indians.

get good possessions, I think we’ll be competitive with a lot of teams." Southwestern begins South Central Conference play at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Vandalia High School. selliott@campbellpublications.net

Sam Elliott Jersey County Journal With teammates facing foul trouble, Jersey Community High School sophomore Lauren Davis stepped up and scored a gamehigh 15 points to help the Lady Panthers beat Waterloo in the teams' Mississippi Valley Conference opener Monday at JCHS. "She had an awesome game," Jersey head coach Stephanie Harris said. "She's a player who can definitely step up. She's very good at going to the basket and she has a great shot, which is what we need from her offensively." Lia Roundcount and Macy Thurston — lost at times due to foul trouble — each added six points for the Lady Panthers (3-2, 1-0 MVC), as did Caroline Crawford. A strong Jersey defense limited Waterloo to three first-quarter points and the Lady Panthers led 20-10 at halftime. "Any wins in this league are nice," Harris said. "Hopefully we can build on this one and get some more."

Jersey's first-year head coach is plenty familiar with the MVC, having spent the past three seasons as the head coach at Highland. After the Lady Panthers continue league play by hosting Mascoutah at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at JCHS, Harris will make the first trip back to her alma mater as an opposing coach when Jersey visits the Lady Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m. Monday. "It'll be odd. It'll be different, definitely," she said. "But like I've told people from Highland — yeah I'll always root for Highland, but right now I'm bleeding Jersey blue. Jerseyville is my home now." Harris' Highland program went a combined 61-31 with two regional championships in her three seasons leading the varsity team. Now she hopes her familiarity with the Lady Bulldogs can help the Lady Panthers. "I know player tendencies and those kind of things and I’ve scouted some new stuff they’re running," Harris said. "I think, of any team, I probably know them the best." selliott@campbellpublications.net

Birds edged by Hawks in nail-biter

"That was a survival game for us," Reeder said. "They came out with more energy than we did, but Luke and Kyle made free throws down the stretch and our defense was really good as tired as we were." Tournament host Centralia began its championship run by winning a 55-43 decision when the Orphans and Panthers met Wednesday, Nov. 27. Steckel led all scorers with 23 points, but an 18-6 Centralia advantage in the third quarter kept Jersey at bay after the Panthers trailed just 21-18 at halftime. After seeing him excel against Centralia, Mahomet-Seymour guarded Steckel tightly when the teams met Friday. The senior point guard took it in stride, finding open teammates Shively and Jacob Varble — who finished with a game-best 22 and 17 points, respectively — as Jersey won a 61-58 decision. The Panthers' MVC schedule continues at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Waterloo in their home opener at JCHS. "One of our goals is to win the conference, but another one on top of that is we want to go 10-0," Reeder said. "We want to run the table in this league with the experience we have back. It’s a lofty goal with five of those games on the road, but we got one of those taken care of already. It’s not going to be easy, but it’s what we want to do. This Waterloo game is a big statement game." Jersey hosts Alton Marquette for a non-conference outing at 7:30 p.m. Saturday — the Panthers' last home game until Jan. 10. selliott@campbellpublications.net

JCHS bowling teams sweep CM

Jersey Community High School's bowling teams collected wins against Civic Memorial Tuesday at TriCounty Bowl. The Jersey boys beat the Eagles 30-5 and had a total-pins advantage of 3,029-2,808. Meawhile, the Lady Panthers won a 26-14 decision and outbowled CM 2,172 pins to 1,977. Four of Jersey's five boys bowled series of at least 600 pins. Jacob Freand's 652 series was best, featuring

game scores of 204 pins, a match-best 256 and 192. Brendan Vanost added a 622 series (211, 211, 200) and Jeff Gump was close behind at 620 (203, 205, 212). Kenny Nelson chipped in a 601 series (227, 210, 164) and Brandon Handler rounded out the Panthers' scoring with a 534 series (181, 201, 152). The Lady Panthers were led by Emily Stemmler's match-high game of 185 pins in addition to scores of 151 and 157 for a 593 series.

Miranda Olsen added a 437 series (135, 152, 150), Lauren Boschert bowled a 431 series (143, 135, 153), Kelsie Tomerlin rolled a 400 series (112, 132, 156) and Lindsay Vanost finished with a 311 series (101, 110, 100). Jersey hosted Highland Wednesday at Tri-County Bowl, but results were not available at press time. The Panthers and Lady Panthers will face Triad at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Camelot Lanes in Collinsville.

Ethan Gallaher puts up a shot against Carrollton tuesday at Southwestern High School. the Piasa Birds senior scored a game-high 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting and Southwestern shot better than 60 percent overall from the field, but a trio of free throws in the final seconds boosted Carrollton to a 65-64 win. Briston Johnson added 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting with nine rebounds, Blake lawson scored 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting and andrew Fry chipped in nine points. michaelrweaver.com
