By DAVID CAMPHOUSE Pike Press Over the weekend, Pike County Health Department (PCHD) was notified of 64 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 and two COVID-19 deaths, the Pike County Health Department reported Monday, Nov. 16. Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) shows three open COVID-19 outbreaks at long-term care facilities in Pike County. IDPH reports that Eastside Health and Rehabilitation Center, Liberty Village and Barry Community Care Center have open COVID-19 outbreaks among staff and residents. Open outbreaks have occurred within the last 28 days. Pittsfield’s Kepley House had an outbreak affecting 21 community members associated with the facility earlier in the year. PCHD reported Tuesday, Nov. 17 that at Pike County nursing homes 98 residents have contracted COVID-19, as have 47 staff members. 14 nursing home residents have died from the pandemic, according to PCHD data. Alarmingly, according to IDPH data, Barry Community Care Center has experienced 11 COVID-19 deaths as of Friday, Nov. 13, as well as 65 COVID cases.
According to the United States Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Barry Community Care Center had a population of 57 residents and a capacity of 76 beds as of October. Barry Mayor Shawn Rennecker said that the Barry Community Care Center had not, as of Monday, Nov. 16, reached out to the city for any form of support. “They’re trying their best to protect residents, Rennecker said. “This is happening nationwide at long-term care facilities. Rennecker went on to reinforce the idea that residents of Pike County should do their part to prevent the spread of COVID19. “We’ve tried to take the position that everyone should wear a mask in public, Rennecker said. “It’s a simple thing to do. Be courteous to one another. We’ve just got to take care of one another. Randy Bloom, President/COO of Kansas City’s Tutera Senior Living and Health, which operates Barry Community Care Center praised and defended the facility’s staff for working through the pandemic and current outbreak. “We are very proud and pleased with the staff, Bloom said. “They have worked courageously to try and stop the spread of this disease.
3&6 PRYHV WR UHPRWH OHDUQLQJ VWXGHQWV RXW DW :HVWHUQ By DAVID CAMPHOUSE Pike Press According to school officials, all Pikeland grade 6, 7 and 8 students will participate in remote learning on the dates of Nov. 16, 17, 18 and 19. Officials said that reducing the capacity in the building provides enough adults to cover essential positions that have been impacted by isolation or quarantine. They assert that teachers have prepared students and that the students are ready to work remotely. Developmentally, according to school authorities, grades 6-8 should be able to adapt to the skills needed to complete remote learning. Pittsfield’s Liberty Village and Eastside Health and Rehabilitation Center, according to IDPH, have had 41 and seven COVID-19 cases respectively in the facilities’ currently-ongoing outbreaks. Liberty Village Administrator Billye Titus said that their facility’s staff members were expected to wear face masks, wash
Students should have received an email from the school and teachers regarding the plans for Monday morning and daily schedules. Starting at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, teachers began calling homes to check on progress, internet connectivity and collect requests for meal support. The goal is for this group of students to return to school on Monday, Nov. 23, 2020. On Tuesday, Nov. 17, Western Superintendent Jessica Funk reported that the district had 70 students out, because they were in quarantine or waiting on test results. Funk also said that five staff are out due to quarantine. Western, according to Funk, does not plan to turn to remote learning at this time.
their hands frequently and avoid large social gatherings when they were outside of work. Titus went on to say that employees were screened pre-shift and mid-shift to try to ensure the absence of COVID-19 in the facility. (See, COVID, A2)
Bicentennial Committee releases courthouse video tour By DAVID CAMPHOUSE Pike Press As a celebration of the 125th anniversary of the Pike County courthouse’s dedication, and as a lead-up to the county’s 2021 bicentennial celebration, the Pike County Historical Society’s Bicentennial Committee released a virtual tour of the courthouse on Youtube Monday, Nov. 16. According to Bicentennial Committee Chairperson Emily Pursley, the video provides a unique look into the courthouse building and the history of the county. “It’s a very thorough tour led by Darwin Seenstra, who is the maintenance manager at the courthouse, Pursley said. “He showed us all up and down the courthouse. He included a lot of things that people wouldn’t normally see on a tour. Pursley indicated that Seenstra included many rooms not generally open to the public on the tour. In addition, Pursley stated that Seenstra provided information throughout the tour about courthouse furniture, architectural details and artifacts that Seenstra had found at the courthouse throughout his career. According to Pursley, the video tour of the courthouse is also intended to act as a launch of sorts for activities planned for the county’s 2021 bicentennial celebration. While many in-person bicentennial activities are in limbo due to the COVID19 pandemic, the committee is moving forward with online/remote activities. County residents are invited to take part in a Pike County history essay contest, for which submissions are due Jan. 8. The contest is open to middle school students, high school students, post-secondary students and adults. The committee is also planning

At Lake Pittsfield’s north boat ramp, first place winners of Sunday’s JET Custom Tackle Youth League’s championship fishing tournament Liam, left, and Greg Bonnett show off the five largemouth bass they caught during the event. The fish weighed a total of 13.4 pounds. The Bonnetts’ largest fish weighed 4.28 pounds.
Bonnetts take first at Lake Pittsfield youth fishing tournament By DAVID CAMPHOUSE Pike Press Amid cold temperatures and strong winds, Pittsfield father and son duo Greg and Liam Bonnett won Jacksonville’s JET Custom Tackle Youth League championship fishing tournament at Lake Pittsfield Sunday, Nov. 15. According to Greg Bonnett, Sunday’s tournament was the last of six tournaments held by JET since June at lakes throughout west central Illinois – including Schuy-Rush lake, Lake Springfield, Otter Lake and Sanchris Lake. The championship tournament featured the five highest ranking of the 20 teams involved in JET Custom tackle Youth League. JET Custom Tackle owner and tournament organizer Jacob Traeger said that each team was comprised of one member under 18 and either an adult or another youth member. “We’ve been participating in fishing tournaments for the past three years,
Greg Bonnett said. “We compete in two other circuits besides this one. The pair caught a total of 5 largemouth bass, with the largest weighing in at 4.28 pounds. The total catch weighed 13.4 pounds – enough to capture first prize in the tournament. The Bonnetts’ passion for competitive fishing led Greg and Liam, a freshman at PHS, to help start a fishing team at the high school. The Bonnetts presented a proposal to start the team at Pikeland’s February school board meeting. The board subsequently approved the team at its March meeting. “We just put together a proposal for the team, Liam Bonnett said. “Pittsfield, the school, is known for the outdoors. The Bonnetts said that over 300 schools in Illinois sponsor fishing teams. In addition, many college scholarships are available for competitive fishing. (See, BONNETTS, A2)
Music educators adapt to abnormal school year By DAVID CAMPHOUSE Pike Press COVID-19 social distancing guidelines and abridged school days have created serious challenges for Pike County music educators, but instructors at Pikeland, Western and Pleasant Hill have managed to keep students learning and playing/singing through the COVID-19 pandemic. Griggsville-Perry, due to COVID-related scheduling constraints, has elected to not offer music classes this school year. Despite the challenges of outdoor rehearsals, reduced ensemble sizes and remote learning – music instructor Chardy Bangert, who teaches instrumental music at Pikeland alongside her husband, Justin Bangert, led PCS’s eighth grade band as they put on a performance of patriotic tunes and military marches to mark Veterans Day on Wednesday,
Nov. 11. “The students have been very understanding and are willing to be flexible with all of the changes for this year, Chardy and Justin Bangert said in an email. “They have not complained about having to go outside to play when it is 40 degrees. We are blessed to have such great students at Pikeland. The biggest challenge has been time. With the shortened school day, that also means less rehearsal time. This has had a great effect on the high school band since they only meet one day a week with half of the class. It has been difficult missing all of the usual fall performances such as marching in area parades and performing the halftime show at the home football games. Pikeland chorus instructor James Feldpausch also said that choral groups have been reduced in size, and rehearsals have been moved outdoors.

COVID-19 has eliminated many opportunities for school band and choir performances. Pikeland instrumental music instructor Chardy Bangert took the opportunity on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, to take her eighth grade band outside PCS to record patriotic songs and the marches of the military branches. The performance was shared on Facebook. Included in the eighth grade band are: Addie Rhodes, Lindsey Ramsey, Adriana Schmidt, Tegan Morrow, Molly Gerard, Rynleigh Priest, Erryn Rivera, Trey Schlieper, Kanedance Baxter, Wyatt Neese, Wyatt Capps, Luke Archer, Emma Thelander, Abby Opitz, Cade Risley, Madison Frieden, Tim Hull, Connor Sweeting, Jesse Davidsmeyer, Brett Ator, Ethan Darnell and Westin Leonard.
In addition, Feldpausch noted that his instruction relied greatly on remote learning platforms. “A huge component of our current teacher/student interaction takes place by means of the Google Classroom platform and the recent inclusion of SmartMusic – a webbased practice platform, Feldpausch said. Chardy Bangert also
stressed the important role that SmartMusic has taken on this school year and praised the Pikeland Foundation for purchasing the software. “The Pikeland Foundation purchased SmartMusic subscriptions for the (grade) 6-12 band and chorus members, Bangert said. “SmartMusic is an online program that allows students to play their music and get instant feedback on
their performance. The program shows which notes and rhythms are performed correctly and where mistakes are made. It also plays the rest of the parts so it sounds like the individual student is playing along with the full ensemble. Students can then submit those recordings to their teachers for comments and assessments. (See, MUSIC, A2)
Pike Press Quincy Medical Group to expand home-based care NEW A2
:HGQHVGD\ 1RYHPEHU
By DAVID CAMPHOUSE Pike Press Quincy Medical Group (QMG) recently announced plans to develop a Hospital at Home program designed to provide hospitallevel care to patients in the comfort of their home with the support of highly skilled physicians, advanced practitioners and nurses supported by advanced technology. Hospital at Home is a model of care that was developed by investigators at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Public Health and was successfully tested in a National Demonstration and Evaluation Study. “As a part of our commitment to transform healthcare, we have been researching best practice, home-based hospital care models and earlier this year became an official licensee of the program, QMG Interim Chief Medical Officer Dr. Rick Noble said. “The goals of the program are to help address hospital bed capacity, reduce hospitalization costs and risks and to support seamless transitions of care for patients. Noble said that QMG seeks to offer traditional physician home visits, while taking advantage of the human and technological capacity of the organization. We want to return to the roots of medicine – making home visits to patients, Noble said. “It’s home visits plus the tech and support staff of the 21st century. Dr. Noble said that the Hospital at Home program is particularly valuable to elderly patients. “We want to be able to keep an elderly person with memory loss or mild dementia in their own home, Noble said. “This program will allow patients to remain in their own homes
and receive the same comprehensive care they would receive in the hospital. It will reduce infection rates and confusion rates among patients. Noble added that the program has the potential to significantly reduce Submitted photo costs and keep certain Quincy Medical patients at home. Prime candidates for Hospital Group Interim at Home, according to Chief Medical Noble, include lower acu- Officer Dr. Rick ity patients experiencing Noble community acquired pneumonia, skin infections and congestive heart failure. QMG plans to offer Hospital at Home throughout the organization’s service area. “Our goal is to roll this out to any region of west-central Illinois that we take care of, Noble said. While the timeline for implementation of the Hospital at Home program has not been determined by QMG, Noble expressed optimism of a relatively quick roll-out. “I would imagine over the next year we could start delivery to lower acuity patients and gradually advance the program, Noble said. Patients should call their QMG doctor for help in finding the best level of care to meet their needs and before making unnecessary trips to the hospital. Patients can receive walkin care seven days a week in Quincy at QMG Now and in the pediatrics department, Keokuk and Pittsfield. QMG Ortho Now also provides walk-in care for patients when an injury or accident occurs that doesn’t require high-level and costly emergency care.

(Continued from A1) Pleasant Hill’s Jack Bibb has continued to teach junior high and high school band and chorus at Pleasant Hill. Bibb believes that the challenge of delivering music education amid the pandemic is worth the effort. “I personally believe music helps develop our students into productive people, Bibb said. “Music helps students become more introspective and to release their emotions. We also learn across the curriculum – talking

Kaufman said Western students have been learning about music theory and history through Google Classroom, but Kaufman said that the idea of performing as a group has kept her students motivated. “They’re excited about playing together, so that’s kept us going, Kaufman said.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Connect with your ancestors Dear Editor, Three months ago I sent out the message for people to report to me if they had ancestors who were early settlers in Pike County. To date I have had 6 early
settlers turned in. They are: Robert Alexander McClintock, John Nicholson, Ezekiel Clemmons, Joseph G. Watson, and Charles A. Hazelrigg. We have proof that they all were here by 1830. We also have Jacob Pursley, who was here between 1830 and 1835. Since I have a list of 438 heads of household in 1830 you would think more people
would connect to one of them. Please contact us at Pike County Historical Society Bicentennial Committee P.O. Box 44 Pittsfield, IL 62363 or email to pikeil200th@gmail.com. We hope to hear from you. BECKY WINNER History Promotion Committee

PICKINGS FROM PIKE’S PAST 50 YEARS AGO: BILL LOWRY APPOINTED STATE’S ATTORNEY
150 Years Ago Nov. 24, 1870 The county board of supervisors held its regular November meeting. The first order of business was to pay the bounty to several persons who were present with wolf scalps. The meeting then resumed and lasted for three days. Divine services will be held in St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Pittsfield at 10:30 o’clock on the morning of Thanksgiving Day, when Rev. Dr. Hume will preach an appropriate sermon. 125 Years Ago Nov. 20, 1895 On Thursday evening, Nov. 21, at the Christian Church, Mr. Jos. C. Shastid will give his graduation recital, and Dr. T. H. Shastid of Galesburg will present the diploma. Company A, 5th Infantry, Illinois National Guard, was thoroughly inspected at the armory in Pittsfield last Monday evening by Col. Henry Davis, Jr. of Springfield. There were 35 inspected, and many spectators present, and a dance followed.
100 Years Ago Nov. 24, 1920 The scarlet and black football team journeyed over to Hannibal Nov. 20, with 200 rooters also making the trip. They brought home the happy end of a 25-0 score. The Christian Church had “The Carnival of Seasons Friday night, and drew a big crowd for food, candy, and other items, which added about $280 to the pipe organ fund, for which the women of the church are happily working. 75 Years Ago Nov. 21, 1945 Fifty members of the Pittsfield High School football squad, their fathers and other guests, attended the annual football banquet. The toastmaster was J. H. Voshall and the main entertainment was a film of a University of Missouri football game. A package mailed in 1941, before the United States entered the war, by the young people of the intermediate department of the Pittsfield Methodist Church, was finally received at the nursery in Fin-
land to which it had been sent. It is unknown where it spent the past four years, but some of the non- food contents of the package were still usable. 50 Years Ago Nov. 25, 1970 William E. Lowry was appointed state’s attorney for Pike County by the board of supervisors Monday morning. Lowry will succeed Cecil Burrows in the $15,000 per year job. Burrows was elected Associate Judge Nov. 3, and will assume the duties of that office Dec. 7. St. Mary’s Catholic Church will open a new parish hall this week. It replaces an older, smaller structure, just south of the new building. It was at one time the Mormon Church in Pittsfield, and was sold in 1912, and made into a parish hall for St. Mary’s. Saukee co-captains Bruce Callender and Kevin Lowe were named to the first team All-state football team for medium schools. Two Saukees were on the first team All-state back in 1967, they were Dave Shaw and George Roodhouse.
Pike County had a 69% voter turnout in the recent election—pretty good for a nonpresidential election year. 25 Years Ago Nov. 22, 1995 Through cooperative efforts, four Pike County pork producers are constructing a small-scale hog confinement operation that enlists the latest in swine technology. Larry Borrowman, Paul Borrowman, Jim Borrowman and Jerry Webster are building the facility northeast of the Pittsfield city lake. Lyndle Dark, Baylis village president, received a $60,000 check from Gov. Jim Edgar, which will go to improve the town’s water system. 10 Years Ago Nov. 24, 2010 Lt. Col. Richard (Craig) Rush concluded a successful Marine Corps career last week, as he transferred command his Heavy Helicopter squadron. He and his family plan to return to Pike County. Q Pickings from Pike’s Past is compiled by Michael Boren.

Vada Irene Sisk was born in Florida, MO on April 8, 1926, a daughter of Richard Nichols and Ada Miller. She married James ‘Bud’ Sisk at Pittsfield on September 15, 1947. Bud was the love her life. He preceded her in death on November 23, 2012. Vada Sisk. If you are about to throw away any old clothes, stop. Consider: Vada Sisk (you probably know her as ‘Irene’) who entered eternal life on Monday, November 9, 2020. Her spirit is carried on by her 3 children, 28 grandchildren, 5 surviving siblings and an extended family of relations and friends from every walk of life. We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from Irene during her 94 years, among them: Never throw away old clothes. Use the old ones to clothe the kids in the neighborhood, to give to the less fortunate, have a yard sale (just to give items away for free), sing down the halls of the nursing home, be kind, and if you
want to change the world, go home, and love your family. Irene was a homemaker. There was always a warm cast iron skillet full of fresh rolls or cobblers for her family and friends. Irene did not know a stranger. She also loved to quilt; her hands never rested. She is the whisperer of the leaves as you walk down the street; she is the smell of certain foods you remember. She is the sound of the rain that lulls you to sleep, the color of a rainbow, she is Christmas morning. Those who have taken her lessons to heart will continue to ensure that every child is loved, every nursing home resident is visited, and the hungry will have a sandwich. Survivors include three daughters, Linda (husband Rich) Osten of Barry, IL, Fanny (Husband Frosty) Clark of Barry, IL and Penny Hawkins of Hannibal, MO. Also surviving are 32 great grandchildren, and several great great grandchildren.

As the harvest hustle and fall field work start to slow, it is time to reflect on the growing season to see what worked well and start making decisions for the next season. On farm yield data from the current season is a great way to evaluate hybrid and variety performance. For choosing new or different hybrids and varieties, the University of Illinois Variety Testing provides some useful information to aid in making those decisions. The Variety Testing program conducts replicated, small-plot testing on commercially available corn, soybean, wheat, forage crops and sorghum in Northern, West Central, East Central and Southern Illinois with about three locations in each region. These tests have been conducted over multiple years allowing for evaluations to be made across diverse growing seasons. Information for the variety testing can be found at https://go.illinois.edu/VT. When making comparisons, I typically like to look at yield results across
multiple locations to see how consistent the hybrid or variety yields. Other sources that provide quality yield data include the FIRST (Farmers Independent Research of Seed Technology) plots. These plots are conducted throughout the Midwest by farmers using their traditional management practices. With these trials, information such as soil type, fertility programs, pest management and planting population are included which can allow you to make decisions based off practices similar to your own. Data from the FIRST plots can be found at https://www.firstseedtests.com/. For a deeper dive into corn hybrid evaluations, look at some of the work done the Crop Physiology Lab at the University of Illinois. With their Management Yield Potential Trials, commercially available corn hybrids are evaluated across three rates of nitrogen (0, 60, and 280 lbs. N), 3 plant populations (32, 38, and 44K) and two row spacings (20 and 30) in Northern,
Central and Southern Illinois. These evaluations are useful in matching hybrids up with your current management practices, or even provide data on how to better manage hybrids you currently plant. This information can be found at https://go.illinois.edu/ CropPhysiology. Yield information provided by private companies can also be useful for making comparisons to results from other sources. The more data you have to compare might make things more confusing for yourself, but it can be helpful for seeing results across varying soil types and environments. Good Growing Tip of the Week: A certain hybrid or variety is not going to yield the same for everyone due to our variations in soil type, fertility programs, weather and other management practices. No one knows your land and farming practices better than you, it is important to do your research and find something that will produce well for you!

BARRY OBSERVES ARBOR DAY IN OCTOBER On Oct. 30, the City of Barry celebrated Arbor Day by planting a tree in the swimming pool park. Normally, Arbor Day is celebrated in April, but the observance can be any day designated by the city officials. The short observance and ceremonial tree planting was held at the pool park, where a Redpointe Maple was planted. Mayor Rennecker read a proclamation designating Oct. 30 as Arbor Day in Barry. The city has received the Tree City USA designation for 22 straight years. Two of the requirements are an annual observance of Arbor Day and the ceremonial planting of a tree. Present at the tree planting ceremony were, left to right, City Administrator Jeff Hogge, Public Works Director Robert Snyder, Tree Board Member Melvin Gilbert, Mayor Shawn Rennecker, Alderman Bruce Kendall and Tree Board Member Jon Fesler.

Curry to retire after 32 years of dedication to public safety As of Nov. 30, Nancy Curry of Perry will retire after 32 years at the Pike County Sheriff’s Department (PCSD). Her positions held included dispatcher, correctional officer, transportation officer, LEADS/dispatch supervisor and emergency 911 telecommunicator. Nancy has dedicated 32 years to public safety – taking care of staff, deputies, as well as helping and saving many lives over the years. “No matter rain or shine, Nancy was there to protect all of us, the PCSD said in a press release. “Her dedication to both staff and the community will truly be missed. “No matter what challenges or changes given to Nancy, she always took them on to make sure she was giving 110 percent to the staff and community, Sandy Shacht, PCSD office administrator, said. “She was my work partner for many years, and she is a good friend. I will miss seeing her at work every day, but she has earned this. “I worked with Nancy starting in the jail and as a dispatcher when I first started here in 1999, Pike County Sheriff David Greenwood said. “Throughout the years, as a deputy, she was always telling me what to do and where to go and was very good at it. I guess that’s a dispatcher thing. Nancy is loved by all here. She as a co-worker, friend and her
