Coronavirus cases mount; effects felt by county schools By DAVID CAMPHOUSE Pike Press Pike County Health Department (PCHD) on Tuesday, Nov. 10 reported 67 lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases since Friday, Nov. 6.. Tuesday’s numbers show an increase of 156 lab-confirmed cases in the county since PCHD’s Tuesday, Nov. 3 COVID-19 report. In addition, as of Tueday, 11 patients were in the hospital with COVID-19. 14 county residents have died of the disease since the beginning of the pandemic. In addition, As of Nov. 6, the seven-day rolling COVID-19 positivity rate for Pike County had risen to 18.6 percent. On Nov. 2, Illinois Region 3, which includes Pike County, was put under mitigation requirements by the State of Illinois. The seven-day rolling positivity rate for the region at that time was 11 percent and the seven-day rolling positivity rate for Pike County was 12.9 percent. Superintendents at Pike County’s school districts say that positive COVID-19 tests and quarantine protocols among students and staff present serious hurdles in educating students. “It’s a huge challenge for our teachers,” Pikeland Superintendent Carol Kilver said of students being placed in quarantine. “It’s a constant flow of students in and out of classes.” Kilver said that as of Saturday, Nov. 7, eight PHS students, 116 PCS students, 27 South Elementary School students and 24 Pikeland district staff were either in quarantine or isolation, because they had potentially been exposed to someone who tested posi-

In the same timeframe, the district has experienced seven staff/adult cases. 60 percent of the 12 student cases are currently active, and 63 percent of adult cases are active. The district, Kilver said, is making every effort to keep schools from going to full remote learning, and the district has worked to not expand PHS’s hybrid online/in-person delivery platform to PCS. “We are trying really hard to keep the doors open at all our schools,” Kilver said. “We never went to a hybrid model in seventh and eighth grades. We didn’t have the student support.” Griggsville-Perry, Western and Pleasant Hill have each had to deal with COVID-19 cases and quarantines as well. G-P Superintendent Kent Hawley indicated that the district currently has 11 students and two staff members under COVID-19 quarantine, because of close contact with positive household members. “We are just trying to hold on through all of this,” Hawley said. COVID adds stress to ambulance By BETH ZUMWALT Pike Press alls related to COVID-19 have increased the number of runs Pike County EMS must make, but the number of calls are not up as high as the time needed to complete those runs. “The nature of our calls has changed. We send a crew out in full PPE,” Josh Martin, administrator of

the Pike County EMS, said. “Gloves, full body gowns, goggles, face shields, everything we can do to protect ourselves.” Once the run is completed, the crew and the rig return to base and start the decontamination process. “We wipe down and sanitize everything in the ambulance,” Martin said. “We have a UV light that helps kill germs. The county has ordered us a fogger and that will have a 10-minute dry time for it to be effective. The

county has been great to get us whatever we need.” While everything is being sanitized, the crew responding to the call is showering and changing clothes. “All of that is very time consuming,” Martin said. “If we get another call while we are in the process, it can delay our response time.” The procedures are implemented in the case of suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19.

By BETH ZUMWALT Pike Press As of Monday, Nov. 9, the Pike County Clerk’s office has received 10 ballots for the Nov. 3 election. The votes will be counted in the totals of the Nov. 3 election, if they are postmarked before Nov. 3. “We can accept them for 14 days,” Natalie Roseberry, county clerk, said. Roseberry said of the 10 ballots received, four were postmarked after Nov. 3, meaning they will not be counted. When asked where the ballots came from, Roseberry said all over. “We have one from Alaska, one from Arizona, four from Pittsfield, one from Chicago and one from Barry,” she said. Roseberry also said voting in her office was heavy the day of the election with more than 160 people casting votes. “A lot of people had moved and forgot to change their address,” she said. “There are more those that have P.O. Box numbers for addresses and officials documents cannot be mailed to a P.O. Box. There has to be a physical address. If not, that mail is returned and they are de-activated. So many of those people voted at my office.” In total, 7,872 of Pike County’s 10,692 registered voters voted, coming out to 73.63 percent turnout. The fair tax amendment failed in Pike County, 6,330 to 1,235. Donald Trump received 6,235 votes for president compared to Joseph Biden’s 1,458. Mike Curran, a Republican, gathered 5,695 votes to incumbent Richard Durbin, 1,807. C.D. Davidsmeyer, also a Republican, had 5,695 votes to challenger, Brandon Adams’ 1,118. No local races were contested.

Musgroves' new hobby puts them into the future
By BETH ZUMWALT Pike Press Until recent years, 3D printing was only a dream seen in sci-fi movies. Then the once futuristic way to produce parts and tools for industrial or manufacturing became commonplace. Now the craft has expanded to small companies and individuals. Krystal and Ricky Musgrove, a motherson combination, have purchased two different types of 3-D printers and have been using them to make replicas of historical places around the county as well as useful objects such as a cellphone stand. “The possibilities are endless, Krystal Musgrove said. “We have two different types of 3-D printers. One is a filament based (printer) and the other uses liquid resin. The filament 3D printing is a process for making a physical object from a threedimensional digital model, typically by laying down many successive thin layers of a material. It brings a digital object (its CAD representation) into its physical form by adding layer by layer of materials. “There are spools of plastic coil that feed into the machine and it follows the outline of the image we want to make, Krystal Musgrove said. “It just keeps adding layers until it reaches the desired size. To make the cell phone stand takes about four hours in the machine that heats up to 390
degrees Fahrenheit. Musgrove said one color works the best, giving the items a cleaner, more professional look, but two colors can be used. The second method uses liquid resin. That requires a different type printer and the Musgroves use it to make their replicas of the Pike County Courthouse. “We make them upside down, Musgrove said. “We can make 15 of the domes at a time. It takes the same amount of time to make one as it does 15. The courthouse is done in pieces and then put together. Both machines are similar in size to a microwave with a more complicated control panel. Ricky Musgrove does all the design work and enters the data into the computers. They run their business out of Monroe Street Suites. “We had a guy here recently from an aerospace group, Krystal Musgrove said. “He said Ricky’s work was amazing. So far, the two have focused on the cellphone stand and the replicas of the Pike County courthouse, the Time and Milton bandstands, and Christmas ornaments. Those items are for sale at Monroe Street Suites or at the Pike County Mercantile. Krystal Musgrave said the plan is to branch out and maybe do more historic sites in Pike County or around the region. “We thought about doing a Purple Martin house from Griggsville, she said.

Pittsfield City Lake to close Nov. Access Food sees bumper deer harvest 23; access to disc golf open all year
David Camphouse/Pike Press
From left to right: Tony Gustison, Anthony Gustison, Matt Woodford and Thomas Woodford took advantage of unseasonably warm weather over the weekend to camp and fish at Lake Pittsfield’s east boat ramp before camping at the lake closes for the season. Pittsfield’s city council will leave the lake road open to the east boat ramp all season to allow access to the disc golf course, but camping and other areas of the lake will be closed starting Monday, Nov. 23.
By BETH ZUMWALT Pike Press Due to the popularity of the disc golf course at the Pittsfield Lake, the Pittsfield City Council opted to leave the lake road open as far as the east boat ramp. The rest of the lake will be closed for the winter Nov. 23, giving the pro/ am tournament coming to the disc golf course time to play out. The tournament is scheduled for Nov. 14. The decision was made at the Nov. 2 council meeting. The council also heard that the city’s liability insurance has gone up $1,500 for the year for a total of $87,211. Workmen’s comp however is down $7,000 to $49,769. “The workmen’s comp went down because they said we didn’t have any claims this year, Ann Moffit, city clerk, said. A sidewalk near Piper Lane and Morrison Street may be in the works after the council voted on a resolution to apply for the grant under the state’s Safe Route to Schools program. The ordinance regarding the stop sign at Monroe and Perry was passed on its second reading. Everyone agrees there was a stop sign there previously, but, according to Robert Woods, who had researched the matter, there is no record of the sign ever being removed.
The question became whether the council needed to pass another ordinance or could just replace the stop sign. After a recommendation from the city’s attorney, Mike Hollahan, the council opted to go ahead with the reading and repass the ordinance, taking into consideration the ordinance had already been read once and the council had paid to have it prepared. An amendment to allow for a veterinary/animal clinic in the industrial park was passed on its first and second reading. The closure of the alley that runs off of North Jackson, near the Couch residence, was also passed. All aldermen had high praise for the golf cart Halloween parade and were hopeful it would become an annual event. Alderman Beth White, who is also president of the Pike County Chamber of Commerce informed the council Girls Night Out has been canceled in view of the pandemic. Alderman Kevin Ketchum told the council, IDNR will not only deliver trout to the King Park lagoon in April, but will also add catfish in June. Police Chief Michael Starman and Sheriff David Greenwood are in negotiations as to the cost the city should pay the county for dispatching services for the city police department. Those talks are ongoing with a resolution, hopefully, to be reached soon.
Coronavirus (Continued from A1) Western Superintendent Jessica Funk reported that the district has 23 students and eight staff under quarantine. An additional 13 students are awaiting testing results from household members who are symptomatic. Ron Edwards, Pleasant Hill’s superintendent, declined to provide numbers of quarantined students and staff, citing privacy concerns. “I can say that right now we have no active cases, Edwards said. “We’re very careful about privacy and HIPPA laws.
Earlier this year, Pleasant Hill went to fully remote instruction from Sept. 29 through Oct. 19, because of positive COVID-19 cases among students and staff. “We went through a hard time last month, but – knock on wood – we’ve come out of it and are doing okay right now, Edwards said.
By DAVID CAMPHOUSE Pike Press According to Access Illinois Outdoors Executive Director Brenda Middendorf and Hilltop Custom Meat owner Todd Smith, this year’s Access Food program is on pace to process and distribute a record amount of venison to hungry Pike County families. Access Food, which started in 2006, is a program of Two Rivers Resource Conservation and Development and Access Illinois Outdoors that pays for the processing of deer donated by hunters and distributes the meat to food pantries throughout the county. The deer are processed at Hilltop Custom Meats/Smith Taxidermy. “Honestly, this year it’s going really good. Smith said. “Numbers are up. In 31 years, I’ve never seen quantity and quality like this year, even with it being as hot as it’s been. According to Middendorf, who tracks the number of deer donated, deer donated this year to date show a large percentage increase over this time last year. “Last year at this time, we had 50 deer, and on Friday we had 82 deer donated, Middendorf said. “There could have been more deer come in over the weekend. According to Smith, Hilltop processed a total of 10,000 pounds of venison that was distributed to families in one pound packages in 2019. This year, Middendorf said, the program has already processed 4,400 pounds. “We’re seeing so many deer donated, we may need to seek additional funding before the season is over to keep up, Middendorf said. Smith indicated that if funding was available, his facility could double their 2019 production of venison for Access Food. Local hunters and out-ofstate hunters alike donate deer to Access Food. “It’s about 50-50, Middendorf said. “We see hunters from locations all

around the country donating to the program. Middendorf emphasized the importance of the Access Food program to Pike County residents served by area food banks. According to Middendorf, many Pike County families routinely lack adequate access to nutritious food, and demand on food pantries has increased sharply during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, Middendorf said that protein sources were especially important for families in need, emphasizing the role of protein in the growth and development of healthy children.. “There’s just not enough money there to cover meat in the grocery budget, and that’s often the first thing to go because it is the most expensive, Middendorf said. To pay for deer processing, Access Food relies on individual donations and grants from the Illinois State Treasurer, DOT Charitable, the Health & Wellness Foundation of Pike County, the Community Foundation of Western Illinois and Northeast Missouri and Cargill Cares. Individuals or organizations interested in donating to the program are directed to contact Access Illinois Outdoors at 1301 East Washington in Pittsfield or call 217-285-2464. In addition to monetary donations, the program needs help from hunters to donate deer. Deer donations for Pike

AUCTIONEER
Two hundred years of Pike County By MICHAEL BOREN PIKE COUNTY BICENTENNIAL COMMITTEE “The Kingdom of Pike turns 200 years old January 31, 2021. Our courthouses are part of our story. Atlas became our county seat in 1825 when Pike was reduced to its current size of approximately 832 square miles. The first courthouse in Atlas was the log courthouse that was taken apart at Coles Grove, in modern day Calhoun County, and reassembled in Atlas. In 1833, when the state legislature stated that county seats should be located at or near the geographic center of a county, the site where Pittsfield now is located was selected to be the new county seat. The county did not have the $200 necessary to pay for 160 acres at $1.25 per acre for the new site, so Colonel William Ross of Atlas loaned the county $200 for the purpose. In appreciation, the county commissioners gave Ross the right to name the new town, and he named it Pittsfield, after his hometown in Massachusetts. The first courthouse in Pittsfield was a two-story frame building on the north side of the square, just east of the present Farmers State Bank. Then, in 1838, a larger courthouse
was built in the center of the square. That courthouse, where Abraham Lincoln, Stephen A. Douglas, and others practiced law, was in pretty bad shape by 1894, when the citizens of Pike generally agreed that we needed to replace it. The old courthouse was torn down, and ground broken for our current courthouse May 11, 1894. The cornerstone was laid in a formal ceremony July 12, 1894. There were various difficulties in completing such a large construction project. One serious problem was the fact that work stopped due to the lack of skilled stonecutters. Two brothers, Robert and John Franklin, from Strout, between Nebo and Pearl, were paying their taxes in Pittsfield when they noticed that the stone work had stopped. They were both experienced stone cutters, born in England. They inquired about the problem, and were hired to complete the keystone arch work using Cleveland sandstone as the courthouse veneer. The courthouse, which is the jewel of the county, was completed in 1895 at the total cost of $68,520.52 for building, fixtures and furniture. Our “castle on the prairie was officially dedicated 125 years ago, November 16, 1895. Take time to enjoy it from outside and look it over from the inside at your earliest opportunity.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Supporting use of body cameras TO THE EDITOR: We are writing a joint letter to respond to the question raised by Mr. Bob Ring in his letter of September 9. We are all in support of body cameras for local law enforcement. Body cameras, for the most part, help good officers and provide evidence of their professional behavior. Thanks to Mr. Ring for raising an important issue.
Of course body cameras come with challenges. Body cameras are not always running, and no one can ensure that every word you want to be recorded is actually recorded. Technology glitches happen with body cameras just like all electronic devices. And they are expensive – both to purchase, and to maintain, including a large ongoing expense for the electronic storage needed to upload all those video files and distribute them to attorneys. Pike County Crimestoppers recently provided funds to the Pike County Sheriff’s Department to purchase two
body cameras. We will start with those two cameras, and expand the program as we are able. Our goal is to protect and serve the people of Pittsfield and Pike County with excellence and transparency, and to do it in a way that demonstrates the integrity of the outstanding law enforcement officers we have working here. Sheriff David Greenwood State’s Attorney Zachary Boren Police Chief Michael Starman
PICKINGS FROM PIKE’S PAST 125 YEARS AGO: NEW COURTHOUSE DEDICATED
150 Years Ago Nov. 17, 1870 We congratulate the people of Pittsfield and vicinity in the pride they will take in showing the weary traveler their new hotel on the north side of the square, and trust that they will encourage and sustain that popular and widely known gentleman, Capt. George T. Edwards of Griggsville, who we understand is to be the landlord. We learn from Capt. Lovell, supervisor of Pleasant Hill, that work on the south Pike railroad is progressing rapidly. Twelve miles of track from the Mississippi River past Monument in Spring Creek will be completed in about four weeks. Geo. Roberts, Esq., Supervisor from Pearl, tells us that the bridge across the Illinois is progressing rapidly, as is the work through Pearl. By contract, it is to be completed by March 1, 1871.
125 Years Ago Nov. 20, 1895 Dedication day for the new courthouse was Nov. 16. The weather was raw and gloomy in the forenoon—cloudy and rainy in the afternoon. But for the deep mud in the roads, an immense crowd would have been gathered here. The court room was crowded to its utmost capacity (600?), and there was a host of people in all other parts of the building. The total cost of the court-
house building and all fixtures was $68,520.28. Deducting from this amount the $20,000 cash donation made by citizens of Pittsfield and Newburg, the cost the county is $48, 520.28. Speeches were made by several men, including J. M. Bush, editor of the Pike County Democrat, Pittsfield Mayor R. T. Hicks, Montezuma Township Supervisor Wm. Hess, Supervisor J. R. Easley of Derry Township, Judge C. J. Schofield, Capt. M. D. Massie, Geo. W. and Frank H. Jones, A. G. Crawford, Hon. Thomas Worthington, W.W. Watson of the Barry Adage, and Edward Yates. Three of the men had been present at the opening of the previous courthouse in 1838. Years Ago Nov. 17, 1920 The annual Pike County Farmers’ Institute will be held in Kinderhook Thursday and Friday, Nov. 18 and 19. Those wishing to remain over for the second day can secure lodgings. Eleven cars of hogs, cattle and sheep were shipped from the Pittsfield station Tuesday morning. Shippers were Sam Williams, Henry Hillerbranner, Gordon Dimmitt, John P. Ducey, Howe Woods, and A.R. Foreman. All Pittsfield people should find themselves under great obligation to our enterprising townsman, Loren Windmiller,

TWO RIVERS MARINA HOSTS “PUNKIN’ CHUNKIN’ COMPETITION
Left to right: Kelly Bowen, Mason Jones and Alan Bowen prepare to launch a pumpkin using a catapult designed by the team. Three teams competed to see who could design a contraption to heave pumpkins the farthest into the waters of Two Rivers Marina Saturday, Nov. 7. According to part-owner of the marina Cindy Blaylock, five teams originally entered the contest, but two bowed out. Competitors were marina patrons Scott Thomas, Dray Anderson and Hannibal’s Bowen family. Blaylock said the contest was an effort to increase business at the marina later in the year. The current ownership group, according to Blaylock, took possession of the marina last November. Blaylock reports that, in subsequent years, ownership plans to grow events like the “punkin’ chunkin’ competition and the marina’s cardboard boat race that was held earlier in the year.

DAMAGE TO PIKELAND PROPERTY, CAR BURNS
A vehicle caught fire early Saturday morning after it was allegedly doing burnouts on the practice field across from Pittsfield High School. Pittsfield City Police and the Pittsfield Fire Department responded to the call at 2:05 a.m. The damage to the school grounds was discovered later in the day when officers returned to the scene. According to Michael Starman, Pittsfield police chief, it was determined the same car that burned had caused the damage. The driver was located away from the scene and has not yet been charged, but the investigation continues. Sharman said he expected to release more information later this week.
Griggsville city council delays tax levy decision By DAVID CAMPHOUSE PIKE PRESS Griggsville’s city council originally planned to consider changes to the city’s tax levy at its Wednesday, Nov. 4 meeting, but Griggsville Mayor Kent Goewey and the council tabled the discussion of the levy pending additional information and input from Griggsville’s legal counsel. “We didn’t do the tax levy, because we wanted to make sure all the numbers were right, Goewey said. “We have a new attorney, so I want to make sure we are on the same page. Goewey said that any increase in the city’s tax levy would be less than five percent, and tax increases to residents because of any city levy increase would be minimal. “We will not have to have a truth in taxation hearing, because we will have a 4.99 percent increase or less, Goewey said. “Our current tax levy is $131,000. If it does go up, it would be pennies to each property owner. Griggsville’s council members also approved the city’s annual contract with Pike County Animal Control, with the city paying $3,678. According to Goewey, the dollar amount that the city pays animal control is determined by multiplying the city’s population by three. “The contract amount is three dollars per capita, Goewey said. Mayor Goewey reported that animal control issues have not been a big issue in Griggsville recently. “I think they took 10 dogs out of here last year, Goewey said. “It hasn’t been so bad over the last six months or a year. In addition to rounding up loose animals, Goewey said that Pike County Animal Control is also responsible for record keeping associated with mandatory pet vaccinations. The council went on to approve a payment to Two Rivers Plumbing for $17,842.50 for work involved with the replacement of the city’s water lines in the southeast quarter of town. According to City Clerk Linda Brawdy, the payment is the third payment for the current phase
of the water line project. The clerk reported that the current phase of the project is nearly complete. In addition, Griggsville’s council is considering implementing a program that would automatically notify residents in the event of planned water service interruptions caused by public works or utilities projects, such as the current water line project. Goewey said that such a program would be similar to a notification system employed by Pike County Emergency Management, which sends notifications to the cell phones of residents who opt in to the program. “We’re looking into a program to see if it’s an option, Goewey said. “We’re looking to see if it’s viable and cost effective. Licensing of ATV and golf cart use in Griggsville, which was approved at last month’s council meeting, has been delayed, pending the arrival of license stickers to be affixed to the back of licensed ATVs and golf carts. Goewey said that the city council reviewed a proof of a sticker, but the council told the printer that the city wanted a larger sticker. “We came up with a new design with input from Sheriff Greenwood, Goewey said. “We just want to make sure that we have something an officer can see easily. Brawdy reported that interest in the licenses is high among Griggsville residents. “We’ve had probably at least eight to ten applications, Brawdy said. “License fees are $25 through the end of April and $50 per year starting in May. Goewey expressed strong support for Griggsville’s bars and restaurants in light of recently enacted COVID-19 mitigation efforts that restrict indoor dining, while encouraging residents to follow IDPH recommendations “I support any and all small businesses, Goewey said. “There will be no repercussions for businesses from the city. These people’s livelihoods depend on being able to do business. I think everybody needs to wear a mask and wash their hands. If you go into a bar, you understand the consequences.
Care of collection spanning playwright’s career entrusted to Illinois College A collection documenting the life and work of the late playwright Ken Bradbury has been generously donated to the Khalaf Al Habtoor Archives at Illinois College by the Bradbury family. Bradbury was a native of Perry. Ken was a 1967 graduate of Perry High School and a 1971 graduate of Illinois College. He died in 2018 after a long career in entertaining the region with his works. His collection includes awards, correspondence, documents, ephemera, newspapers, photographs, publications and textiles, as well as production advertisements, playbills, posters, programs, scripts, stage directions and sheet music from over the course of Bradbury’s life and the more than 300 plays he penned. Keith Bradbury, a brother, said that future generations and scholars will find his brother’s faith, humor and wisdom stand out as themes throughout his body of work — some of which was never written down. “But for those that are, we were concerned about their preservation, he said. “Many of the newspaper articles predate computers, so the printed copy is all that remains. That amounts to more than two columns every week for 35 years. To have these newspaper articles, plays, speeches, letters, etc., in the safe and capable hands of the archive department at Illinois College gives us the confidence that his works will be preserved and available to all who care.
Since his death, Ken Bradbury’s family has continued to discover his work. Born in Perry, he directed his first play after graduating from IC and taking a job as English teacher at Triopia High School. He was an educator of 35 years, directed and performed in theaters across the region and remained active in his local community throughout his life. “No one knows the extent and depth of Ken’s writings, Keith Bradbury said. “Today, we are still finding plays he had written for various communities about their histories and happenings. Over the summer, the collection was moved and is now being stored in the Khalaf Al Habtoor Archives. Work has begun to organize and preserve the collection, which will be housed in the archives’ state-of-the-art, secure storage facility. Samantha Sauer, archivist and curator of the Paul Findley Congressional Museum and assistant professor of history, said the collection has already generated significant interest and will serve as a rich resource for teaching and research at Illinois College, as well as for off-campus researchers. Keith Bradbury said his brother “loved IC and all that it stands for, and his family has always been dedicated to the liberal arts education IC provides. “He is missed by many, Keith Bradbury added. “But with Illinois College serving as guardians of his work, he will always be near.
You can say we’ve had some quite unseasonable weather as of late. It has been so nice, but sure hunters are really not appreciating this. Have to say, quite warm for November! This is a very important day, for it is because of the veteran you are free to express, live and choose your everyday freedoms. One does not quite comprehend how lucky we are to be free!
