Clowers began competition at the state meet in the preliminary round Thursday. round, finishing fourth in her flight to reach the 12-thrower finals. Clowers' best effort in the shot put Saturday went 40 feet, 2.25 inches, earning her the event's silver medal after only Warrensburg-Latham freshman Kathleen Young went further with a championship throw of 43 feet, 5.25 inches. Her attempts in the discus Saturday didn't top Clowers' best effort from Thursday in the discus, but her distance of 129 feet, 3 inches, held up for third place overall. With Clowers accumulating 15 points with her pair of top-three finishes, the Pleasant Hill Lady Wolves finished in a tie for 19th place overall among Illinois' Class 1A girls track and field teams. Aurora Christian won the team championship with 49 points.

By beth zumwalt and julie boren Pike Press Last week, Sheriff Paul Petty discovered that the locks on the door to the Pike County State’s Attorney’s office in the courthouse had been changed, rendering a master key used in emergency situations useless. Tuesday, Petty reported that the lock in question as been refitted. “Now the lock will match our master key,” Petty said. Among his statutory duties as sheriff, Petty is the custodian of the courthouse. He clarifies that his position regarding door locks has nothing to do with an ongoing felony charge which State’s Attorney Carrie Boyd filed against him May 16. “It’s a matter of public safety,” Petty said. “Procedure calls for the fire department to enter the building through the north door after a correctional officer gives them a master key. Her office door is the first one on the left. If there is a fire in the rotunda, firefighters would have to go through her office to get to it.” Petty said he notified Chief Judge Diane Lagoski of the situation. Custodian Burdette Irwin was instructed to oversee the refitting process. Petty said that Boyd still has a separate key to her office but that once again the master key will work on that office door. While this issue has apparently been resolved, other issues in the Boyd-Petty situation continue. The charge that Boyd recently filed is a felony misconduct charge against Petty in his role as coroner, alleging he failed to collect toxicology samples from a Milton woman who died of a drug overdose. James Edgar, now 26, was charged in 2012 with delivering drugs to Shanna Lopez which
caused her death. Now, Edgar’s legal status is in limbo. The case was set for a bench trial June 24, but with no explanation, the case was called to be heard Thursday, May 22, in the afternoon, with Judge Diane Lagoski being told there was a plea agreement to be decided. The hearing was to start at 1 p.m.
“Procedure calls for the fire department to enter the building through the north door after a correctional officer gives them a master key.”
Paul Petty Pike County sheriff John Leonard, the defense attorney, and Leecia Carnes, the assistant states’ attorney, along with the defendant and his parents, entered the courtroom at 1:37 p.m. Lagoski said she had been notified of a possible plea agreement earlier in the day but since that time, questions had arisen that only Boyd could answer. “She is not in her office and she is not answering her phone,” Lagoski said. “I apologize to Ms. Carnes but I feel I have to continue this hearing until we have answers to some questions that only Ms. Boyd can answer.” Lagoski set next Friday, May 30 for the hearing. “Hopefully, Ms. Boyd can be present,” Lagoski said. Boyd inherited the Edgar case when she was elected state’s attorney in late 2012. The felony case against Petty remains at a standstill, because by
law Boyd is prohibited from prosecuting the case, even though she filed it. She issued a press release Saturday, May 17, that said she had referred the case to the appropriate prosecuting agency, but in a phone interview Tuesday, May 20, said she has not yet chosen an agency to take the case. Boyd was not in her office Tuesday, May 27 and her staff was not aware if a prosecutor has received the case. As of press time, Boyd had not returned a call to Pike Press. Prior to filing the suit, Boyd was defined by law as Petty’s attorney as he is an elected county official and she represents the elected officials of the county. Petty’s attorney has asserted she also has a client-attorney privilege with the sheriff/coronor, especially on the case in question. If the felony case against Petty were to proceed, there is a definite possibility Boyd would be called as a witness. Lawyers cannot file suits where they are potential witnesses. Petty has hired Rick Frazier of Cherry, Frazier and Sabin, a Springfield law firm, to represent him. He has filed a request for a speedy trial, which cannot be granted until a prosecutor is appointed by Boyd. Other motions filed by Frazier include a request for dismissal, for the state’s attorney to turn over all evidence and a motion asking that the county pay his legal fees, since they are technically responsible for Petty’s representation. Wednesday, May 21, Frazier filed 10 more pages of motions to dismiss, citing case law and his interpretation of statutes as they relate to case law. On Tuesday, Petty commended the work of Assistant State’s Attorney Leecia Carnes in performing “due diligence” in working with the sheriff’s department on ongoing cases.

Nearly half a century ago, Dennis Jennings spotted a 1940 Chevy coup sitting in a field south of Pittsfield. The owner of the property told him if he wanted it to come and get it. Jennings, who was 15 at the time, borrowed a tractor and chain from Don Martin and drug it home. After Jennings retires this week from his position as chief of the City of Pittsfield Police Department, he will fulfill his dream and restore the antique vehicle he has kept stored in his garage all these years. “My dad ran a gas station in town and all I had ever dreamed about was being a mechanic,” Jennings said. “After I graduated from high school, I went to Quincy Tech and then went to work with my dad.” Working with Arvis Jennings was a good experience for D.J., as he is called by his friends. Jennings started going to coffee with his father and his buddies which included Cliff Wilder, then chief of police in Pittsfield. (See JENNINGS, A2)

Jennings (Continued from A1) “He was always after me, asking me if I would want to become a police officer,” Jennings said. “Rick Orr and Bob Yelliott had both left the force so they had a couple of openings.” Jennings said Dave Ealy, a police officer, even brought an application to him at his home. “I filled it out and the rest is history,” he said. Jennings joined a force with Larry Snyder, Mike Clendenny, Lonnie Capps and Ealy. The police force was different in those days. The local ambulance was staffed by the on-duty police officer and a volunteer. “I would get called to an accident and when I got there, see they
needed an ambulance, leave, go get the ambulance and take the person to the hospital, go back get the squad car and go back to the scene and handle the accident,” Jennings said. “It was crazy. But there was a lot of pressure. Even on our days off, we were expected to help with transfers and other calls. We were paid $8.64 per call, even for those on our day off.” Jennings said he has enjoyed working as a police officer and enjoyed the friendships he has forged with other officers. “Back in the beginning we used to hang out together and enjoy one another’s company,” he said. “The Illinois State Police, the county, our department, it was relaxing and fun. We were still professional. Now it
is all business.” Jennings said when he first got on the force, one of the biggest problems was speeders. “Muscle cars were popular then,” he said. “Now it is big trucks with loud exhausts. We get more calls about the noise than the speed.” Don’t look for Jennings to become reclusive with his car restoration project. “I like the outdoors,” he said. “I like to fish and hunt and I have a metal detector. I like to look for arrowheads and I have several projects around the house I would like to do.” Jennings did not discount the possibility that he will spend some time with his seven beautiful grandchildren.
mostly cosmetic in nature. “We had some work done over the weekend. That’s what we’re working on today,” Hawley said Tuesday. “The cosmetic repairs will be finished by today.” Hawley explained that so far, everything they’ve found has been “fixable” damage, but it was a lot of extra stress on a busy week. “With baccalaureate and graduation both scheduled this week, it
is our busiest time of the year,” Hawley said. “This will obviously put a great deal of pressure on our maintenance and custodian staff in preparing for the conclusion of the school year. I am confident in our staff and they will be asked to work extremely hard to prepare for this. This is an extremely unfortunate incident for the district to have to deal with during this week.”

Weren’t all the flags glorious this weekend?
A) Attend a Memorial Day 50% service. B) Host or attend a 50% get-together. 0% C) Open the pool!
Maybe you saw a small flag placed to mark a soldier’s grave in your local cemetery. Maybe you displayed one on your front porch. Maybe you walked along a boulevard of many flags on your way to your town’s Memorial Day service. Perhaps you lifted your gaze to the beautiful Pike County Courthouse and saw it encircled by triumphant stars and rippling stripes. If you did any of these things, your participated in the spirits of Memorial Day, honoring those brave men and women who have served our country as members of the armed forces. A flag is a simple symbol – just red, white and blue, arranged in a pattern of stars and stripes. But it stands for a great country and a great idea – that individuals have the God-given right to control their own destiny. That’s a lot to pack into a rectangle of cloth. When you admire the flag and enjoy the advantages that come from living in the USA, never forget for a moment that our country is only as strong as the next generation of leaders. Tell America’s story. Respect our flag and all that it means. Do your part to keep America strong.

In 1959, you were born and that summer we moved to Pittsfield as our father (Richmond Prentice) was named assistant superintendent under Mr. Voshall here in Pikeland Unit #10 Schools. This began a 55-year run of someone from our immediate family serving in this school district. Before Dad left Unit 10 to go to Western Illinois University, our mother (Mary Lea Prentice) started a long run with the school district. Well before her retirement, you began your teaching career here. Never were all three of the family employed here at the same time, but from 1959 to 2014, one or two of you were. With Steve and Kate as well as Dad, Mom and you, there are 90-plus years of educating Pike County’s youth. You’ve taught with some great teachers and retirement marks a new path. You’ve taught with both passion and compassion. You’ve never left a child behind and never had to be mandated for it. Congratulations and good luck. Dad would have been proud. ROD PRENTICE Pittsfield, Ill.

The Coonridge Digest: Freida Marie Crump
Too busy? It’ll drive you up a tree! Greetings from the Ridge Alfie Rodhaver climbed up into a tree yesterday and he says he has no intention of coming down. I looked out my window this morning and he’s still there. Alfie’s wife Lora said that yesterday morning he filled a thermos with coffee, put the newspaper under his arm and climbed up into the soft maple in front of their house. His last words, “I’ll come down when I decide to come down.” On one hand anything out of the ordinary is a cause for excitement in Coonridge, but on the other, most things in this town are on the far side of normal. Since he only lives three doors down I walked over to see what was going on. “I got to thinking, Freida,” he said. “I have a wonderful wife and two great little girls, but we’re just not a family any longer.” He could see the puzzled look on my face so he went on. “This week we’ve had two dance recitals, four ballgames, a concert, soccer practice, plus the girls in school all day. Our life was so filled with ‘stuff’ that I figured what the heck. I think I’ll just go sit in a tree.” Then he added, “Do you have any sugar? I forgot to bring sugar.” His little daughter Maddy was embarrassed. “Daddy, could you at least hide when the school bus stops? It’s really hard to explain to your friends why your father is in a tree.” Bridged Schulte is a reporter for the Washington Post

approaching noon and his wife was too embarrassed to come out of the house. “I love my family, Freida. I really do. But I just don’t know what’s happened. We talk to each other between innings and on car rides to the events. When I got married this just isn’t how I envisioned it.” I tried to assure him that things would settle down as summer approached, first carefully checking the sky for lightening as I uttered this blatant lie. So many of us are locked tight into schedules from which there seems no escape, and the good news is that once you become a grandparent all this becomes optional and the crunch eases a great deal. But until those golden year arrive, I hope we can all find some alone time with our loved ones this summer, away from the hubbub of organized activities and develop relationships that don’t involve someone else’s planned program. And may we all be more interested in what our children become than what they do. I just looked out the window. Alfie is still there but he seems to be drooping a bit around the edges and I’m not sure how long he can sit up there. Time. . . now that he’s got it . . . will tell. ou ever in Coonridge, stop by. We may not answer the door but you’ll enjoy the trip. ■ The imaginative commentary of Freida Marie Crump comes to us from Coonridge – a town that’s a lot like your own.

125 Years Ago May 23, 1889 The wind blew a regular hurricane last Thursday. We heard of barns being destroyed, houses unroofed, and many shade trees and fruit trees ruined. We sympathize with the citizens of El Dara at the sad blow the village received by the burning of its best business houses last Friday. The dry goods store, Dr. Jones’ office, the butcher shop, the ice house, a barn, and Mrs. Dean’s residence all were destroyed by fire. The 50th anniversary of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. James Gay of Summer Hill will be celebrated by them on May 30th, and they desire to learn of all the married couples who were married in this county in 1839, and have resided in the county continuously since. Rev. Wade will hold divine services on the Sunday preceding Memorial Day at Bethel Church. They may not be quite as civilized over at Roodhouse, but there’s one thing that puts them ahead of Pittsfield— they shut up their cows at night and do not let them roam at large, robbing people of their rest and religion. We would like those old girls and small cherubs of Time to discontinue their night walking and hallooing after other people have retired for the night. If not we will consult the ordinance. 100 Years Ago May 27, 1914 It is all over and last night at the conclusion of the commencement of the exercises , the 27 members of the class of 1914 of P. H. S. were turned loose with their diplomas to battle with the cold and uncharitable world. It was a very warm night, but Swan’s battery of 16 double-geared electric fans kept the house cool and enabled those present to pass a very pleasant evening. Manager Swan is spending about $250 to make his picture show at the opera house the coolest place in town this summer. A bunch of young men and boys, all of whom should have known better, Friday night put themselves on the level with rank hoodlums by causing a disturbance at the Christian church banquet room when the graduating class and high school faculty were being entertained at dinner by the juniors. As a result of the attack, which including throwing eggs, eleven of the fellows were placed under arrest by the city authorities and were fined $7 each. Pittsfield’s automobile club completed the work of erecting guide posts at all of the main cross roads of the

who recently wrote a book, “Overwhelmed: Work, Love, and Play When No One Has the Time,” in which she explains the results of her research into why the Alfie’s of the world are beginning to climb trees. She lists several causes of why families are so stressed and the first on her list is that busyness has acquired social status. He busier you are, the more important you seem to be. People compete to be the most busy. Last week I had one of those encounters in the grocery store where I was talking to someone who evidently knew me well but whom I couldn’t place. She told me, “We’re just running ourselves ragged this summer. Brittany has three summer camps and is playing on two teams, plus we’ve got to work in a vacation there somewhere.” Author Schulte calls this the “busier than thou” attitude. A researcher at the University of North Dakota, Ann Burnett, has studied 50 years’ worth of holiday letters. She said that over the years the Christmas letters have dwelt less and less on the blessings of the season and more and more on “how jam-packed the year has been.” Schulte says that the other major reason that families have so little down time is that while women increasingly work more hours outside the home, the men have not kept up and taken an increasing role in taking care of the kids. The result is an acute case of Mama Stress, and you know the old adage: When mama is stressed we’re all stressed. I went home and made Alfie a sandwich since it was

important roads of the county. These guide posts indicate the towns and directions, also the distances and are a great convenience to autoists not familiar with the roads. In addition to these sign posts the telephone poles are also marked to indicate auto routes and dangerous places are also indicated. The late train on the Wabash to Pittsfield will be discontinued because it costs more to run it than the receipts it generates. The banks of Pittsfield will be closed Saturday, May 30, Decoration Day. A move is on foot, it is reported, by the Pittsfield Christian church people, to install a fine pipe organ in their church. 75 Years Ago May 24, 1939 The first annual commencement program of Pittsfield community unit high school will be held Friday. There are 67 graduates. The top graduate of the class is Juanita Zimmerman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Zimmerman. Salutatorian honors go to her cousin, Betty Zimmerman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Zimmerman. Friday evening, nine students graduated from the two year high school at Atlas. Several of the graduates will attend Pleasant Hill high school next year. Barry is graduating 45 students and Griggsville 37. Nebo high school has a graduating class of 9 girls and 8 boys. Henry Aubrey, who at present is employed as salesman at the local C.I.P.S. Co. office, is preparing to open a laundry in Pittsfield in the building formerly occupied by the Brun-Mill Co., just east of the county jail. This will fill a great need in our city, which has been without a laundry for 20 years or more. Mrs. Grace Allen and Victor Hopper, teachers in the Griggsville Grade school for the past year, were united in marriage Saturday afternoon at the Little Brown Church near Nashua, Iowa. Old age pension up to $40 a month would be granted by the state under a bill passed Monday night by an overwhelming vote in the Illinois House. Opponents predict that it will be vetoed by Governor Henry Horner because it does not provide funds for the increased pensions. 50 Years Ago May 27, 1964 Helen Apps, 12-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

The students are: Gloria Franklin, Judy Peecher, Gail Hubbard, Sandra Spellman, Maurice Neese, Gary Gaffney, Jim Miles, Gary Shinn and Gary Dunham. Ninety-five students will receive their diplomas at the annual commencement Friday evening in the Pittsfield High School auditorium. Gary Shinn will open the program with a prayer and Maurice Neese will have the closing prayer. A total of 269 Pike county students hope to graduate this week, not counting students of Meredosia-Chambersburg high school. Jerry Harmison, who has been employed at radio station WBBA the past two years, has accepted a position with a station in Sheldon, Iowa, and Mike Perrine, who formerly lived in Pittsfield and worked for WBBA, will take his place.
25 Years Ago May 24, 1989 Twenty-six private airplanes of varying vintage brought 80 members of the Great Rivers Squadron of the Antique Aircraft Association to Pittsfield-Penstone Airport Sunday for a round of visiting and lunch. Kent, Gregg and Kevin Carnes, airport managers, were on hand to greet the visitors. Former Congressman Paul Findley of Jacksonville was guest speaker Wednesday, May 10 at the Nancy Ross DAR spring tea held at the home of Margaret Shaw. New members of the Griggsville High School National Honor Society were recently inducted into the organization. The students are seniors John Broyles and Carrie Gallagher and sophomores Rebecca Williamson, Lori Dunham, Sarah Curry and Jennifer Craven. Sheila D. 10 Years Ago May 26, 2004 A storm late Monday night may have changed the appearance of the Pittsfield area forever. Many structures were damaged and numerous trees were destroyed. David “Grit” Adams was trapped in his trailer on Lincoln Street in Pittsfield all night as a large tree pinned him on his couch until neighbors heard him shouting for help at 5:30 the next morning. There was damage to homes, farm buildings and grain bins in the Detroit area. Two of the upper stained glass windows were blown out of the Pike County courthouse. World War II veteran J. D. Learning about family history is important
(StatePoint) It’s no wonder that genealogy is one of the most popular topics on the Internet -family history can be fascinating, and learning more about it is an excellent vehicle for generating conversation and fostering intergenerational bonds. Beyond creating a family tree, consider generating a more thorough narrative by conducting an oral history interview with your loved ones. “Through an oral history, you can capture key life moments and connect the past and future,” says Nancy Rogers, senior vice president of Corporate Responsibility at Lincoln Financial Group. The company is honoring the legacy of Abraham Lincoln and the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation through its Lincoln’s Legacy initiative, which includes a call for recorded oral histories conducted by Americans nationwide. 50+ travel: tips on choosing the perfect tour or cruise (StatePoint) For many baby boomers, travel is their favorite leisure activity. Whether to cross something off their bucket list or to indulge in a passion, the 50 and older crowd is on the go. Organized tours and cruises are among the top choices for vacation among boomers, and the good news is that there are hundreds of options to choose from with both. Clay Buckley, vice president, lifestyle, at AARP Services, Inc., a taxable subsidiary of AARP, says boomers should consider many factors when deciding on the perfect trip. “Some travelers over 50 may prefer a relaxing itinerary among people their own age, while others want to be on the go with people of all ages,” says Buckley. “Luckily, the options in cruises and tours are vast enough to suit any style, budget and need.” Buckley recommends boomer travelers consider the following when planning a cruise or tour: n Trip activity level: Travelers should determine objectives for their trips. Is it to rest and relax? Learn? Enjoy lots of activities? Tours and cruises often have
themes and all have set itineraries, so it’s important to know what to expect before you go. n Destination: Some cruises and tours head for far-reaching places and little-known ports of call, while others stick to more mainstream destinations. Others combine the two. Travelers should consider the appeal of all legs of their trip. Some also like to take trips that enable them to add on other destinations or more days to the end or beginning of the trip. n Timing and budget: Prices for tours and cruises may be lower in off seasons such as spring and fall, and may also help travelers avoid weather extremes. Also, single travelers should be aware that some trips charge for lodging based on double occupancy. In addition, the cost to get to and from the trip should be factored into a trip budget. For example, you may have to fly to and from a cruise port. n Size: From intimate, smallgroup excursions by van or small boat, to large tours via bus or cruise ship, size makes a difference. Travelers should be realistic about their desire to be around large or small groups for extended
periods and their need for independent travel or time alone. They should also be aware that some cruises and tours cater specifically to families. n Physical limitations: Travelers with physical limitations or special medical needs should assess their ability to engage in the trip itinerary. They should also check whether medical care is readily available or accessible while on the trip. n Discounts: Vacationers should remember they can save on their trip by seeking out available discounts. For example, from cruises to rental cars, a variety of travel discounts are available to AARP members. Discount providers are selected only after a rigorous process is performed to ensure AARP members receive a valuable offer they want and the quality service they expect, says Buckley. More information about discounts and limited-time offers on cruises and tours is available to AARP members at www. aarpdiscounts.com. By taking several factors into consideration, you can make the most of your next vacation.

ing your family’s history is easier than ever. From conducting research online to recording and sharing oral histories, take advantage of available tools. Here are some guidelines to make the most of the experience: n Prepare questions, don’t just wing it. You’ll have a much more interesting conversation if you have a series of open-ended questions ready in advance. For example, “what historical event left the most lasting impression on your life?” Avoid yes or no questions. n Consider your relatives’ ages and what life might have been like for them during their childhood. Were their schools or neighborhoods racially diverse? Ask your grandparent or older relative to compare life today to that time. “You may not think about it often, but Americans have not always enjoyed the freedom and opportunities they do today. Talking to older relatives about their lives and the lives of their parents and grandparents can shed light on the struggles and chal-
lenges of the past,” says Allison Green, chief diversity officer at Lincoln Financial. n Use a prop to get the conversation started, such as an old photo or a trinket. These keepsakes can inspire both questions and answers. n Preserve your interview by recording it forever. Choose a well-lit, quiet area. Use a camcorder or a smartphone -- whatever works for you. n Don’t keep your interview to yourself. There are ways you can share it with the world. For example, Lincoln Financial Group is calling for recordings to be incorporated into an anthology of voices. To upload your conversation or learn more about the initiative, visit www. LincolnsLegacyOralHistories. com. Everyone has an interesting story to tell and a legacy to leave. Don’t let the fascinating fabric of your family history fade away undiscovered.

Griggsville-Perry senior Isaac Whitaker had a lively day on the base paths Saturday, including crossing home plate to tie the game in the ninth off Max Stinebaker’s single.
G-P wins regional By sam elliot Pike Press The Griggsville-Perry High School baseball team survived an extra-innings scare and rallied for a come-from-behind victory to claim its third-straight regional championship. The top-seeded Tornadoes edged No. 2 seed Brown County 5-4 in nine innings Saturday in the championship game at the Winchester Class 1A Regional — giving G-P (23-8) its fifth regional title of the past six seasons. The teams were tied 3-3 through seven innings and the score remained knotted after a scoreless eighth, but Griggsville-Perry found itself facing a 4-3 deficit after Brown County plated a go-ahead run in the top of the ninth. In relief of Mitch Main — who pitched the first eight innings and faced the first two batters of the ninth — G-P pitchers Kaleb Bradshaw and Jordan Dehart got out of a ninth-inning jam allowing just one run and stranding Hornets baserunners on second and third. Senior Isaac Whitaker led off the bottom of the ninth inning for Griggsville-Perry by reaching first base on an error and stealing second. The Tornadoes’
heads-up play on the base paths led to Whitaker stealing third base while Main took second after drawing a walk to reach first. A single to center field by Max Stinebaker with one out brought home Whitaker for the game-tying run, ensuring the Tornadoes would at least get to play a 10th inning if they couldn’t complete the game-winning rally in the ninth. Ryan Kelly laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Main from second to third base, putting the regional championship-winning run 90 feet away from home plate with two outs. When Brown County delivered a wild pitch to Dehart the following at-bat, Main took advantage and reached home plate before the Hornets could recover. His game- and regional title-winning run earned Griggsville-Perry a berth in the Pawnee Class 1A Sectional. The Tornadoes will face host Pawnee in a sectional semifinal matchup at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday at Pawnee High School. The Indians beat Routt 4-3 Saturday to win the Jacksonville Class 1A Regional. Camp Point Central and Mount Pulaski will face off in the Pawnee Sectional’s first semifinal at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. The sectional championship game will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Pawnee.
The report of the spring gobbler only wild turkey season is now complete. Thanks to Dean Corgiat, our local IDNR wildlife biologist for providing me with the final statewide results. Statewide, the harvest was down 460 birds compared to 2013. Pike County had a decline of 98 turkeys checked compared to last year. That is a 22 percent drop. In assessing the overall tally for the Sate I note that 35 counties had an increase or took the same number of gobblers last year. 65 counties recorded a decrease. For our general area Adam, Schuyler and Fulton counties each had an increase, while Pike, Calhoun and Greene each had declines. I studied the areas that had an increase in harvest in an attempt to determine the reason hunters had success while other counties with similar environment conditions had notable declines. There is no logical basis that one can identify. For example, Jodaviess County which is in the extreme northwestern part of the state had a near 8 percent increase in harvest while neighboring county Carroll recorded static
Lady Tornadoes bow out of regionals By sam elliot Pike Press The Griggsville-Perry High School softball squad was eliminated from the Class 1A Regional it hosted when Brown County claimed a 10-5 decision in a regional semifinal Wednesday, May 21, in
Griggsville. The Lady Tornadoes found themselves facing a 9-1 deficit after Brown County plated four runs each in the top half of the third and fourth innings. Griggsville-Perry responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning and cut the Lady Hornets’ lead to 10-5 after adding

results. The terrain is similar with the same type of dense wooded areas and the same type of agricultural operations. I am not surprised with the drop in harvest based on discussions with other turkey hunters and my own experience in the field. Many hunters commented how few birds they saw and their failure to lure what they did see into shooting range. I hunted early morning for five days and saw only one gobbler, four bends and on jake (a young gobbler). I did hear a few hen calls and a couple of gobblers calling a long distance from my hunting site. The birds would go mute as soon as the morning light began to penetrate the woods. they would not respond to my calls nor would they leave the dense wooded areas. It is interesting to note that most of the successful hunters I talked with commented the gobblers they harvested were old birds. This is an indication of the poor reproduction results the past several years. Turkey reproduction is a slow process even under good conditions. The incubation period for turkeys is

28 days and it usually takes some 24 to 36 hours for all of the eggs to hatch. The past three years have been difficult for the birds. Extremely wet conditions had a big impact on nesting success coupled with marauding predators such as bobcats, raccoons, opossum and hawks. The bobcats capture the bends on the nest. The raccoons and opossum break up the nests and consume the eggs. Hawks often catch the little poults. With all of these difficulties it is not surprising the average pout survival rate is only about 1.6 per hen. A new problem has emerged the past three years in the form of buffalo gnats. Anyone that has spent any time outdoors the past couple of weeks is well aware of the aggravating nature of these critters. These tiny little pests attack the turkeys around the eyes and nostrils causing the hens to abandon their nests in an effort to escape the gnats. According to some observers the gnats can assemble in such a mass around the nostrils that the birds suffocate. The next opportunity to hunt turkeys will be in a fall season that is held in late October.

Judge Diane Lagoski found Frank Quattrocchi, 73, Pittsfield, guilty of five counts of theft between $500 and $10,000. The hearing was held in the Pike County Courthouse Thursday afternoon, May 22. The case had originally been set for Tuesday, May 27 for a jury trial, but Quattrocchi and his attorney, Dave Leefers of Jacksonville, reached an agreement with Matthew Goetten, who was assigned to the case by the special prosecutor’s office. He was originally the assistant but received a text from Pike County State’s Attorney Carrie Boyd May 16 that she was withdrawing from the case and he would be the lone prosecutor. Goetten said he was dropping the first two charges filed against Quattrocchi in 2012 and was instead filing five additional charges. All five were Class 3 felonies that carried a penalty of two to 10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, with one year supervised release, 30 months probation and a $25,000 fine. Goetten read the charges during the bench trial and after each one, Leefers said he and his client had no evidence to offer. After hearing the charges, Lagoski found Quattrocchi guilty and ordered him to pay
restitution. On the first charge, he will pay $9,947 and on the second, $9,727. The third, four and fifth charges allege he took payments made by Rockies Pipeline for an easement and converted the money to his own use. Three checks were issued by Rockies Pipeline to the William Hack and Elizabeth Miller Educational Trust and those were for $9,034, $9,060, $9,500. Hack and Miller were brother and sister and owned a farm, Neither had children and eventually put the farm into a trust with profits from the farm going into the educational fund. Hack is deceased but Miller was in the courtroom Thursday afternoon. As part of the terms of his probation, Quattrocchi received what is called “second-chance” probation which says if the defendant successfully completes his probation, the case will be dismissed. Quattrocchi is to make a lump sum payment on the restitution and then pay $50 per month. He will not have the entire amount paid off by the end of his 24-month probation and will not be released from probation until final payment is made. Another approximately $150,000, seized from Quattrocchi is being held by the state and that, too, will be returned to the Hack/Miller Trust. As terms of his probation,

Quattrocchi cannot violate any laws, he must report when instructed to the Pike County Probation Department, he must refrain from owning any dangerous weapons, he must surrender his FOID card and he can not leave the state without notifiying the probation department. He also cannot serve as financial agent for any other person. According to information presented during the hearing, Quattrocchi is planning on leaving Pike County and moving to either Missouri or California, once his affairs in Pittsfield are settled. He must notifiy the probation office where he is going, give an absolute address and have his probation transferred to his new location and comply with the terms of that state’s requirements. He will not pay a probation fee as the court wants any money he pays to go directly to the victim and based on his Social Security, $50 is the maximum he can afford. He will also submitt to a DNA test and pay the required $250. Also, the state has 45 days to return any and all items that were seized from Quattrocchi’s home during a court authorized search, except for money that was recovered. Quattrocchi was also sentenced to 60 days in jail, but if the terms of probation are followed, that will be vacated.
