Lady Saukee track team brings home hardware By BETH ZUMWALT Pike Press A first and a fourth place finish by Olivia Campbell in the discus and shot, respectively, with a fourth place finish for the 4x400 team and Katie Cox’s third in the 300m hurdles gave the Lady Saukee team eighth place overall in the IHSA state track meet. There were 144 teams in the competition. Campbell was seeded first in the discus before and after the qualifying sectional meet. “I thought I might do better,” Campbell said. “But it was so hot that day, and none of the competitors were used to the heat yet. I checked the next day, and the 2A distances were shorter than normal as well.” Campbell threw the discus approximately 137 feet. Her personal best was in sectional with a 149.8 Her personal best in shot was 40.4 ¼ feet, and at state she threw a 37. Campbell has been throwing since the sixth grade. She was second in the state her seventh-grade year and fourth in her eighth-grade career. “Shot isn’t my favorite, but I do it,” she said. “I will be going to some events this summer, and I will throw the hammer and the weight. Once I get into college, I may get to specialize in discus, maybe not. I enjoy the hammer and the weight, but discus is my favorite.” Campbell has a trainer, and she works at her sport constantly. She is excited about going to Oregon later this month to compete in a national tournament. “It will be held in the same place

The trip to the state tournament was special for all of the athletes and their families, but Amy Cox, mother of Katie Cox, who finished third in the 300m and was on the fourth place 4x400 team, had an especially emotional weekend. Amy Smith Cox was a member of the 1995 4x100 relay team that got first. Fellow runners included Annie Groom Murphy, Faith Wright Saxe and Sarah Webel Musgrave. “Then in 1996 we won again with Annie, Sarah, Christy Kunzeman and myself,” Smith-Cox said. “I didn’t realize it, but I guess there hasn’t been a

County board reaches agreements regarding back pay, payment in arrears By DAVID CAMPHOUSE Pike Press The Pike County Board met for a special meeting on Tuesday, June 8, to settle two ongoing issues related to county employee pay. Considered at the special meeting were the transition to payment in arrears to county employees and the disbursement of back pay owed to some county employees. The county’s transition to payment in arrears to its employees was going to create a gap in payment for county employees and, as a result, triggered “impact bargaining” with the Fraternal Order of Police, representing sheriff’s department employees, and Operating
Engineers Local 965, representing employees in the offices of the circuit clerk, county clerk, supervisor of assessment, treasurer and state’s attorney. “The transition will change from paying employees five days in advance, to paying basically five days behind,” County Board Chairman Jim Sheppard said following last month’s regular board meeting. “The transition caused a period of time when they wouldn’t be paid. Obviously that causes a hardship if they’re not paid for an extended period of time. We’re trying to lessen that burden, while maintaining our commitment to taxpayers.” Sheppard said that the money paid to employees to bridge the salary gap will be money on top

of employees’ current salaries “The deal we’re offering would be beyond their salary,” Sheppard said. According to Sheppard, most any gap in pay that could have been experienced by county employees with the transition to payment in arrears will now be offset by the county. “I believe we have reached an equitable agreement on the transition to arrears,” Sheppard said. “Employees should only notice some slight changes.” Sheppard said that federal funds issued to the county in response to the COVID-19 pandemic would be used to bridge the gap to payment in arrears. “The American recovery plan allows for hazard pay, and we approved that to coincide
with the adjustment payroll,” Sheppard said. According to Sheppard, the settlement will, in fact, result in larger paychecks during the transition period for many county employees. “The only thing missing will be stipends,” Sheppard said. “But since we are not taking out insurance, most will likely have a bigger paycheck.” Without the county board’s settlement, Sheppard said, many county employees – but not ambulance employees – could have seen a significant pay decrease during the transition period to payment in arrears. “Without, it would have varied but been about half,” Sheppard said. “Ambulance employees would have had no difference.” At the special June 8 meeting, the board also addressed the matter of back pay owed to union employees who had been working beyond their 32.5 hour work week for the past several years. In total, county employees are owed approximately $34,000 in back pay over five years. “The issue was created when the courthouse hours changed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.,” Sheppard said following last month’s regular board meeting. “Employees worked beyond 32.5 hours to ensure coverage of their offices.” The board, at last month’s
meeting, unanimously authorized elected office heads of the affected departments to pay current employees any back pay that they are owed going back as far as five years. The funds were to come out of each office’s existing budget. “The back pay will all be taken care of by the end of the month,” Sheppard said. “All but one office had turned in their requests, and those were paid with the payroll on the 10th.” The only department to not yet submit a pay request, according to Sheppard, is the treasurer’s office. In the event a department does not possess sufficient funds to cover the back pay owed to its employees, the department head may request a budget amendment. “They can request a budget amendment,” Sheppard said after last month’s regular board meeting. “An amendment requires a two-thirds majority of the board.” Sheppard said if approved, the additional funds to pay back pay would need to be drawn from the contingency line of the county’s general fund. When asked, Sheppard stated that, to date, all back payments had come from each department’s budget, but that budget amendments may yet be coming. “Currently, from their own budgets, but it may force us to amend some later,” Sheppard said.
Western Illinois Fair starts June 23 in Griggsville By BETH ZUMWALT Pike Press The Western Illinois Fair in Griggsville kicks off June 23, and fair organizers are hoping the community will come out and enjoy the festivities. Wednesday, June 23, will be the Queen and Princess pageant starting at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 24, a truck and tractor pull will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, June 25, will be the school bus demolition derby beginning at 7 p.m. Mike Brown Productions will put on the main derby Saturday, June 26, starting at 7:30 p.m. and a lawn and garden tractor pull will be Sunday at 1 p.m. “Lawn and garden tractor pulls are becoming very popular,” Scott Dunham, president of the Western Illinois Fair Board, said. “We are hoping they catch on here. We have a few local participants this year. We’re hoping local people will come out and cheer them on.” Sunday will also feature a bags tournament and a washer tournament. Both events start at 1 p.m. and should provide good competition. Meanwhile, on the midway, Conner Amusements has promised the fair

It’s been predicted between 25 and 30 percent of all carnivals went out of business last year due to COVID.” Also, the Pike County 4-H will have their livestock shows in the barn area. General project judging will be June 22 at the Farm Bureau building in Pittsfield; poultry and rabbit judging will be June 23 at 9 a.m. in the Griggsville Park. The dog show will be at 11:30 a.m. and the cat show at noon, both in the park. The goat and sheep show will begin at 5 p.m. in the arena. Goats first, followed by sheep, all in the arena. Friday will be the master showmanship at 9 a.m., followed by the animal science skill-a-thon at the American Legion. The auction preview will be at 5:30 p.m. and the auction will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, the beef show will be at 5 p.m. followed by the swine show at approximately 7 p.m. “It should be a good week,” Dunham said. “We hope the community will come out and support us. We operate on a shoestring budget, and every dime we make goes to upkeep on the grounds. We have a lot of new sponsors this year. People who have never sponsored with us before. We’d like to have a big crowd for them.”

Health and Wellness Foundation of Pike County now accepting grant applications The Health and Wellness Foundation of Pike County (HWFPC) is now accepting applications for its Healthy Community Grant for projects benefiting the health and wellness of Pike County. HWFPC is seeking to fund projects that address Pike County’s physical, mental, emotional and/or social health concerns; implement a collaborative approach to a need; bridge the gap created by health disparities and provide evidence-based solutions. Proposals may include but are not limited to programs that provide: direct delivery of health and human services, health education and wellness resources, screenings and evaluations, technical assistance, public awareness activities and capacity building including training and staff development. The Healthy Community Grant funds

projects solely benefit Pike County and is a single-year grant with a funding cap of $7,500 per project. To be eligible, applicant organizations must be not for profit or equivalent, and need not be located in Pike County, but should be seeking to provide programs or services within Pike County. The deadline for applying is Aug. 1. Organizations selected as grant recipients will be announced by October. Projects that exceed $7,500 should apply for the Health Catalyst Grant, which funds significant projects in an amount up to $15,000 annually, or up to $45,000 over three years. This grant was created to serve as a catalyst for addressing major health concerns impacting Pike County. Proposals should outline programs and/or services that demonstrate significant interventions for the county’s

most pressing health and quality of life concerns, including: mental health, oral health and food insecurity. Applicants are encouraged to contact the foundation to discuss their proposals. Griggsville and Barry are making preparations for a very good time. A terrible tornado struck 3LWWV¿HOG LQ WKH PLGGOH RI WKH night. The towering walls of the Bush block, the beautiful WKUHH VWRU\ HGL¿FH RQ WKH VRXWK side of the square, trembled, and came down. It had not yet been roofed. Col. D. B. Bush has sustained a loss of around $5000. Trees, stalwart old monarchs, that have stood the storms of ages, trembled like OLOLHV LQ D VSULQJ EUHH]H DQG groaned terribly, as their limbs were blown across the town. 125 Years Ago June 17, 1896 The Perry State Bank has increased its capital from $25,000 to $40,000. This is one of the paying institutions of our town. Perry baseball players went to Griggsville, and played to a 24-24 tie. The Griggsville boys came here, and the game was stopped after six innings by rain, resulting in a tie, 11-11. Our boys went to Griggsville again with blood in their eye, and determination to win. Result, 35-33 in favor of Perry.

Gasoline prices continue to climb in Illinois to an average of $1.35, which is the highest since 1981 when the price reached $1.87. 10 Years Ago June 22, 2011 The total price tag for the proposed Western Community Center YMCA at Barry might have seemed steep initially, but residents are well on their way to getting the new facility. The idea for the Western Community YMCA came up in 2010 after the city of Barry acquired the former Catholic Church building. Seven members of the Nebo High School class of 1941 gathered for a reunion June 15 at the Cardinal Inn. There are eight members of the original 18 classmates living. They were called the Nebo Pirates, and their colors were orange and black. COVID is still present; take precautions to protect yourself and others
Illinois entered Phase 5 of the Restore Illinois Plan. This means a full re-opening of all businesses and activities. The Pike County Health Department (PCHD) would like to remind people that although things are starting to return to normal, the COVID-19 virus is still here. Just in the month of May and so far in June this year, 34 Pike County residents have contracted COVID-19. Out of those, ¿YH ZHUH KRVSLWDOL]HG DQG WKHUH was one COVID-elated death. The average age of individuals contracting the virus during that time period is 42.5 years of age. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that individuals who are not fully-vaccinated cover their nose and mouth with a face covering in a public place and are unable to maintain a 6-foot social distance. This requirement applies whether in an indoor space, such as a store or in a public outdoor space where maintaining a 6-foot social distance is not always possible. CDC also advises all individuals, including those who are fully vaccinated, are required to wear a face covering on planes, buses, trains and other forms of public transportation and in transportation hubs, such as airports, train and bus stations; in congregate facilities, such as correctional facilities and homeless shelters and in health care settings. The most effective measures for preventing further spread of COVID-19 are getting vaccinated, staying home when you are sick, maintaining physical separation between other people while out in public (at least 6 feet) and frequently washing your hands with either soap and water or
an alcohol-based hand rub. Pike County Health Department (PCHD) reopened the building to the public on Monday, June 14, and will resume services Monday through Thursday with the exception of WIC. WIC will continue remote services until August. Clients will be able to use the front door to gain access. PCHD is closed to the public on Fri-
days. Masking will be required and verbal COVID screening will be conducted. PCHD will close from noon-1 p.m. daily. ,PPXQL]DWLRQ FOLQLFV ZLOO UHsume in July. She has now accepted a teaching position in Tucson, Ariz., and has recently moved west to find a place to live and get settled before school starts in the fall. We all wish her well. Chase in two counties results in arrest By BETH ZUMWALT Pike Press A chase involving a stolen vehicle by both the Pike and Calhoun County Sheriff’s Departments ended in the arrest of a juvenile and Jade Edwards, 19, Nebo. The pair were arrested May 31 in Pike County. The incident began May 31, when the Pike County Sheriff ’s Department received information regard-

in Calhoun County by the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, but the vehicle fled from the officers. The Pike County Sheriff’s Department took over the vehicle pursuit and eventually conducted a PIT maneuver on the fleeing vehicle which disabled it. Both the driver and passenger fled from the vehicle on foot. The driver was taken into custody a short distance away.
A passenger was detained by a private citizen who was providing assistance to the Pike County Sheriff’s Department. The driver, a juvenile, was arrested and lodged in the Adams County Youth Home on charges of unlawful possession of a stolen motor vehicle, aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a peace officer, no valid driver’s license and resisting arrest. Employees from the Pike County Sheriff’s Department will be hosting a farewell reception at Hopewell Winery in Rockport to celebrate the careers of Sandy Schacht and Steve Lehr, June 18 beginning at 6 p.m. Sandy has worked at the Pike County Sheriff’s Department since October of 1991. She has been an integral part in the dayto-day operations since her first day as a correctional officer, dispatcher, sergeant and 911 coordinator. She will be retiring as the office administrator. Sandy was instrumental in making sure every aspect of the sheriff’s department ran smoothly. Ask anyone who ever worked with Sandy and they will tell you the same. Sandy was also the on-site IT person for the sheriff’s department and the county, being called on constantly to fix computer issues and answer questions. Lear started his law enforcement career in 1979 with the Pike County Sheriff’s Department. In 1988, he went to the Pittsfield Police Department where he served for 10 years until he returned to the Pike County Sheriff’s Department in 1998 as Chief Deputy under Sheriff Paul Petty. Steve served as chief deputy for 20 years. Steve has had an illustrious law enforcement career. Steve has shared his knowledge of law enforcement with a whole new generation of law enforcement officers who will use it as they trek through their careers. Please stop by (even if it is for a minute or two) and join the sheriff’s department in sending these two wonderful friends into their retirement. Refreshments will be provided.

U.S. Air Force veteran Rawn Hart of Pleasant Hill was the winner of the largest catch in the bass portion of the Fishing for Freedom event held in Quincy, June 4-6. Cory Winchell was Hart’s boat sponsor. Jody Coy, also of Pleasant Hill, was also a boat sponsor and Mike Lawson, of Nebo, retired Army, also participated in the event. Hart was the only veteran to enter the bass competition, and his catch of .78 was the winner in that category. Hart and Winchell have participated together the last two years. Winchell has been involved for the past four tournaments and Hart the past three. Both were disappointed when last year’s competition was canceled.
