By BETH ZUMWALT Pike Press By now, most Pike County voters should have received their vote by mail applications. According to County Clerk Natalie Roseberry, the applications were to be mailed in batches, beginning this week. “The applications are coming from a third party vendor,” Roseberry said. “Anyone who doesn’t get one can check the county clerk’s on-line voter portal.” To view the new online voter portal, visit the county clerk’s website at https://www.pikecountyil.org/ county-clerk/ and click on election resources then “online voter portal.” The portal may give the reason an application was not received by mail. “Someone’s address may have changed and they forgot to notify us or something like that,” Roseberry said. “The voter portal requires the last four numbers of the Social Security number or a driver’s license number. Once in the portal, a voter can see registration status, history and any voter history.” Roseberry said once a voter

Workers from Rees Construction work on widening the turn radiuses and making all sidewalks handicapped accessible. Work started on the project which extends from North Jackson at Benson to Archer Street on Washington.

Work on improving U.S. 54 starts By BETH ZUMWALT Pike Press Work has begun on improving sidewalks and other projects extending through Pittsfield from North Jackson at Benson Street to Archer Street as it intersects with Washington Street. “They started work last week,” Mayor John Hayden, said. “They will do all the sidewalk, intersections and traffic signal work before starting on the resurfacing. They like to do the laying of the new material and the milling of the old surface as close together as possible to prevent drying.” The project involves resurfacing, upgrading traffic signals and improving sidewalk accessibility from Benton Street at Jackson to Archer Street at Washington. These upgrades will provide a smoother driving surface,

increase efficiency at intersections and create safer sidewalks. Lane closures will be necessary — with traffic controlled by flaggers — during the work, which is expected to be complete in late November 2021. Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment. The project exceeded the estimates, but the city of Pittsfield increased their share by $90,000 to a total of $264,000 to make sure the work was completed this construction season.

receives an application to vote by mail, fills it out and mails it back, they are limited to mail-in-voting. “Once we receive the official ballots, we will mail the ballots to those we have received application forms from,” she said. “And we remove those sheets from the in-person voting roles. If you send in an application, you must vote by mail, whether you mailed your ballot back in or not.” If anyone choses not to vote by mail, they may simply ignore the application and not respond. Roseberry says she is not concerned about voter fraud in Pike County as the voter list is short enough to be manageable for her and her staff. She does have concerns about bigger metropolitan areas. “Since I have held office there has only been one case of voter fraud in Pike County,” she said. “A person voted in both Pike County, Ill. and Pike County, Mo. Crossing state lines made it a federal offense. The State Board of Elections caught it and turned it over the the feds. I never heard how it was resolved, but it is a federal offense.”

More than $823,624 in state money coming to Pike County roads By BETH ZUMWALT Pike Press

s part of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker’s Rebuild Illinois Plan, Pike County’s, 18 municipalities and 24 townships will split $823,624 in money aimed at fixing Pike County roadways. “This is funded by the increase in the gas tax implemented at the beginning of the year,” Chris Johnson, Pike County highway superintendent, said. Johnson said only Pike County and the city of Pittsfield will have any regulations placed on the money. The rest of the entities receiving funds can do with the money as they please as long as it is for road work. None of the townships in the county will get enough money to be required to use the money on a bondable project,” Johnson said. “ Essentially, the threshold they set was if more than

$45,000 per distribution, which there are to be six over 3 years, for a total of $270,000. None of the townships are close to that amount.” But the county and the city of Pittsfield will have to do bondable projects. “Any amount over $45,000 must be applied to what is called a bondable project, or one that is expected to last at least 13 years,” Johnson said. “We are going to use ours toward upgrading the New Salem-Griggsville roadway.” He also said more money should be forthcoming over the next three years. “Everybody should get two payments a year for the next three years,” he said. A breakdown of allotments are: Pike County –$130, 256 Townships: Atlas, $32,023, Barry, $31,771, Chambersburg, $23,564, Cincinnati, $16,610, Derry, $23,597, Detroit, $17,052, Fairmount, $26,344, (See, ROADS, A2)

With pandemic, empty fall looms ahead By BETH ZUMWALT Pike Press With the Illinois High School Association’s announcement of postponing high school sports until the spring and most fairs and festivals being called off, it looks like the fall season will not offer many traditional events. COVID has taken its toll on local activities. Pleasant Hill 4th of July and both county fairs have already missed their scheduled dates and have no plans of rescheduling the full agenda this year. Pleasant Hill did offer its magnificent fireworks display, but all other actives were canceled. Both fairs are considering fall demolition derbies. Baylis would have been the next festival on the calendar but was also not held. Hull and The Nebo Vin Fiz were both scheduled for the weekend of Aug. 15. Both events are canceled, although Hull will still have a parade Saturdy, Aug. 15 from Hull Fertilizer through town and back. Parade starts at 11 a.m. and all participants must be in a vehicle, tractor or on a float. No walkers. The Lions Club and the North River Old Iron Club will be hosting their annual tractor pull at 1 p.m. Saturday. Perry Pioneer Day

We knew we probably couldn’t get permission from the state to close off the boulevard. Then we thought about moving to the fair grounds, but in the end, with liability and all, we figured it was better to lose one year, than maybe lose it forever.”

Trena Martin Member of the Griggsville Apple Festival Committee. Chairman Jennifer Liehr advised the village board in May, that with the COVID19 virus it would be impossible to hold the event, traditionally held in late August. Pittsfield’s Fall Festival followed suit with an announcement the three day event scheduled for Aug. 29-31 would not happen this year. New Canton has canceled for the 2020 season. Griggsville Apple Festival was the last festival to give up hope. “We knew we probably couldn’t get permission from the state to close off the boulevard,” Trena Martin, a member of the committee, said. “Then we thought about moving to the fair grounds, but in the end, with liability and all, we figured

it was better to lose one year, than maybe lose it forever.” Milton announced July 21 their event would not happen. Ashlee Nash, one of the organizers of the event posted on Facebook that the carnival had canceled after the State of Illinois stopped doing inspections, effectively shutting them down. The Barry Apple Festival has also announced no festival this year. “Our carnival, which we are under a five-year contract with, is unsure if they would even be able to be here,” the committee said, via press release. “The State of Illinois currently is not allowing ride inspections to take place. This effectively shuts them down. The BAF (See, PANDEMIC, A8)

SECURITY AT THE COURTHOUSE

Pike County Deputy A.J. Robinson watches a visitor to the Pike County Courthouse walk through the metal detector at the north entrance of the building. A complete overhaul of the north entrance was completed and this is the first week for its usage. A glass partition separates those entering and leaving the courthouse, and bullet-proof glass doors at the outside entrance and into the rotunda have been installed. The elevator will be programed to stop at the first floor before being allowed to the second level. The elevator should be opened this week, once a state inspection has been completed. The project was mandated by the state to enhance security.

Pike County schools 20-21 plans look similar but have differences

By BETH ZUMWALT Pike Press The four Pike County Schools are readying themselves for the 20/21 school years which will be different that any other year in school history. COVID-19 guidelines allow for some variations in school attendance and schools have taken that into account. Options include in-school learning, which will include masks, temperatures being taken before students are allowed on the bus or in the building; social distancing requirements for the class room and bus and shortened school days, with most students attending only five hours per day. Remote learning has teachers uploading assignments, instructions and lesson plans online with students being able to do the work from home. Virtual learning most likely will include a third-party instructor who will teach a live education plan that mirrors the district’s plans. Griggsville-Perry is offering both remote learning and in-school learning. “We surveyed our families, and about 60 percent of them said they preferred in school learning, Kent Hawley, superintendent of G-P, said. For the third that wants to do the remote learning we will offer SeeSaw to students in K-4 and Google Classroom in grades 5-12. Hawley said the in-person school day would be from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with teachers available in the afternoon to help the remote learners online. Pikeland Unit 10 will offer in-school learning and virtual learning, only with a medical waiver or if a medical waiver cannot be obtained, parents may apply for virtual learn-

ing. “If a parent feels their child would be in danger of attending school, but their medical provider is not sure, virtual learning is necessary, the family may apply for virtual learning, Dr. Carol Kilver, superintendent of Pikeland, said. “We will review each application and make a decision based on the information we receive. Silver also said there will be five hours of learning per day for both virtual and in-school learners. “But if a parent’s schedule doesn’t allow for five hours per day, there just has to be 25 hours per week, Kilver said. Pleasant Hill will offer remote learning, using Google Classroom and SeeSaw, as well as in-person learning. “Our remote learning will try to replicate the classroom environment as best we can, Ron Edwards, superintendent, said. “We know younger kids will be reliant on the schedules of the parents, but high school students will be expected to log-in at the class times. Edwards said the school has a solid plan in place for in-school attendance including social distrancing, masks and extreme sanitation measures each day. Western will offer regular classroom attendance and remote learning to both K-12 and high schoolers. Students who can maintain their grades while using remote learning will be allowed the option, but if their grade drops to a D or below, they will have to come in for additional help. Deadlines for registering for school and what options are approaching and vary by school. Parents of students are urged to make arrangements for whichever type of learning they are choosing for their child.

Pleasant Hill to offer baseball as junior high seasons shift

By BETH ZUMWALT Pike Press Pleasant Hill Junior High will offer baseball this fall due to the fact football is postponed until spring. “We wanted our kids to have something to do this fall, Ron Edwards, superintendent, said. “Kylee Orr, our athletic director, is trying to schedule games. A meeting for both girls softball and boys baseball was held Monday evening at the Little League fields. Sixteen boys reported for baseball and 14 girls for softball. The Illinois Elementary School Association, which governs junior high athletics had canceled all junior high sports for the fall season July 23 but Friday, July 31, reversed itself allowing baseball, softball, cross country and golf. No junior high teams for golf or cross country are offered in Pike County. Softball, baseball and cross country teams may begin their practices Aug. 3, and may conduct their first game or contest Aug. 15. Competitions may not be held before Aug. 15; contests previously scheduled to start before Aug.15 will need to be canceled. The start date is mandated by the Governor’s Office. A shortened post-season tournament will be held, limited to regional and sectional action in order not to mix players and parents with others from other parts of the state. Football is considered a high risk sport as

far as spreading COVID-19 so it will be held in the spring. Junior high girls basketball will also be moved to the spring, with practice beginning March 8, with first games being held March 20 and the season concluding April 26. Boys junior high basketball will start practice Jan. 4, play tier first games Jan 16 and have a regional competition only, Feb. 22. Girls volleyball will begin practice Jan. 11, games begin Jan. 23 and a regional only tournament March 1. Junior high wrestling will begin practice Jan.11; matches begin Jan. 23 and a regional only tournament March 6. Junior high track and field will start practice March 1, meets may begin March 15, sectionals May 7-8 for smaller schools and May 14-15 for larger schools and tentatively a state tournament, May 7 and 8 for 1 and 2 A schools and May 21 and 22 for 3 and 4 A schools. All sports will have certain regulations including the fall sports which indicate two contests per week and no tournaments or events of more than three teams; spectators and group gathering are subject to IDPH guidelines; regular season play should be limited to within conference, other schools in the same general geographical area (approximately a 30 mile radius) or EMS region only; E-learning students would be eligible provided the local district allows their participation.

Two new cases of COVID-19 in county Pike County Health Department (PCHD) has been notified of a two new Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Pike County, both males and in their teens. Both are isolating at home. Close contacts are being identified and will be asked to quarantine for 14 days from their last contact with the positive case per CDC guidelines. A total of 14 COVID-19 cases in Pike County residents have been reported to PCHD. Currently there are three active and eleven have recovered. As of July 29, approximately 1400 people have tested negative for the virus. Twelve people are in quarantine. Pike County went from one reported case in April to several positive reports in June and July. At this time, the Pike County Health Department does not expect the county to revert back to a lockdown. The Illinois Dept. of Public Health is closely monitoring data from local health departments and regional healthcare councils and will recommend moving back to the previous phase based on the following factors: Sustained rise in positivity rate, sustained increase in hospital admissions for COVID19 like illness, reduction in hospital capacity

threatening surge capabilities and significant outbreak in the region that threatens the health of the region. To prevent that from happening, individuals should: Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds – especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. Avoid close contact with those that are sick. Please stay home and away from others when you are not feeling well. Maintain social distancing recommendations of at least 6 feet. Remember that some people without symptoms may be able to spread the virus. Cover your nose and mouth with a cloth face covering when around others and unable to socially distance. Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue, then throw the tissue away and wash your hands. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. Avoid social gatherings of more than 50 people per the Illinois Recovery Plan.

PICKINGS FROM PIKE’S PAST 75 YEARS AGO: PIKE CELEBRATES END OF WORLD WAR II

150 Years Ago Aug. 11, 1870 The quiet town of Griggsville is still in the same hill with all its former beauties surrounding it. The business of the town is lively and in a healthy condition. A flying visit to the Perry Springs on Friday last, in company with a young and genteel friend, showed us the Springs in full blast, with some 60 or 70 visitors, and all going as merry “as a marriage bell. Thursday of last week 23 hands were returning on the railroad from Summit to New Salem on a hand car, sitting on a plank. The plank broke, and spilled off four or five at each end. Those in front were run over by the car, which was going rapidly on a down grade. Several were badly bruised, but none fatally. We learn that over 100 hands are at work on the railroad from Kinderhook to Hannibal, and are raising the grade. The bridge at Hannibal has been located, and stakes mark its exact position when completed.

125 Years Ago Aug. 14, 1895 The weather has been extremely hot for several days, the roads are becoming dusty, and the farmers are gently suggesting that a little rain would do no harm. The Hesley brothers are sporting a tandem bicycle, the first that has yet put in appearance in Pittsfield. Whoop la! The engine house was submerged and the basement caved. On Monday, the county cesspool caved in, but thank kind Providence, the courthouse still stands. The material for the new schoolhouse in Pittsfield is being rapidly gathered on the ground, and will be put together by a large force. So much water remains on the bottoms, chills and fever will be in abundance this fall. Time has more dashing old widowers that are on the matrimonial market than any

town of its size in the county. 100 Years Ago Aug. 11, 1920 Dr. J. H. Barber and Floyd W. Allen purchased of the Clayton heirs the building on the west side of the square for the price of $10,000. Just where Mr. Watters will move his grocery stock has not been determined. Edwin Ducey of Pittsfield has been employed as principal of the Time schools at a salary of $100 per month. The big fair at Griggsville is on this week, with auto races, horse races, foot racing, baseball and other attractions. 75 Years Ago Aug. 15, 1945 Pittsfield celebrated the news of the surrender of Japan Tuesday evening in a noisy but orderly fashion. The fire siren, factory whistles, church bells, fire engines and auto horns, coupled with fire crackers and other noise makers were brought into use, and lasted far into the night and early morning. A premature celebration started Sunday night by a false radio flash fed into the United Press wire by some mysterious person or agency. The hullabaloo lasted only a few minutes, but while it did last was suggestive of the premature celebration following World War I. Cpl Darius Hammitt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus Hammitt, arrived home Friday. He had been overseas for three years. Lt. Col. K. I. Grimes, who has been overseas for three years and eight months, sent a telegram to relatives in Pearl that he hoped to be home by today. 50 Years Ago Aug. 12, 1970 The Board of Supervisors is still pondering the subject of districts for a smaller board, or of going to the three person commission form of government. German Folk Songs filled the high school gym at Pleas-

ant Hill, as a mixed chorus from Heidelburg performed before an audience of 1,250 persons. The school board will allow the East School to stand for another year, as long as the Pike County Historical Society pays the liability insurance on the building and the cost of erecting a fence to surround the schoolhouse. The Historical Society has agreed to those terms. Junior Parentals, which was organized in Pittsfield in 1941, has now become part of a national organization, called The Junior Woman’s Club. Officers are: Mrs. Fred Tittsworth, president; Mrs. Lyndel Johnson, vice president; Mrs. Roger Baughman, treasurer; and Mrs. William Moody, secretary.

elected chair of the board of directors of the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians during the organization’s 47th annual meeting July 20-23 at Indian Lakes Resort in Bloomingdale. There is a flurry of bank construction going on in Pike County, including Farmer’s National Bank in Griggsville, Corn Belt Bank, Farmers State Bank, Farmers Bank of Liberty, and Kinderhook State Bank. 10 Years Ago Aug. 11. 2010 The Pikeland Skychief Radio control airplane club hosted its second annual “Come Fly With Us event Sunday, and showed potential pilots how to rule the skies. The Ameren plant in Meredosia has battled layoffs and unit closures, but new federal funding looks to bring power back to the plant. The Abe Lincoln Project is trying to update records and find as many graves of Pike County Civil War soldiers as possible. Bill Lidgard, Steve Boes and John Sheppard are pictured in a local cemetery.

25 Years Ago Aug. 9,1995 The 10th annual Masters at PASA Park in Barry was a great success in spite of several rainfalls, which made for soggy conditions at the park. Thursday was Hank Williams, Jr. day, with the country and western legend and gun enthusiast in attendance. Dr. Ron Johnson was

Health and Wellness Foundation responds to COVID-19 crisis

By DAVID CAMPHOUSE Pike Press In an effort to assist agencies that provide food assistance to children and families affected by the COVID19 school and business interruptions, the Health and Wellness Foundation of Pike County recently announced that they awarded six Pike County agencies with a onetime $5000 grant to assist with the purchase of food supplies. Each of the recipient organizations either has a food pantry that is open free to the public regardless of the community the recipient lives in, or they are providing free meals to youth under the age of 18 residing in Pike County. The grants were awarded June 15, but funds may be expended throughout the calendar year to offset COVID-19 expenditures. “The foundation knows that the COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging for many families, particularly for those who have children who utilize the school meal programs and those that are already food insecure, Health and Wellness Executive Director Patricia McIntosh said. “This wasn’t a competitive grant, McIntosh said. “At our April meeting, the foundation’s board tasked me with researching the Pike County agencies serving this food insecure population, and which agencies saw an increased demand due to the pandemic. The six agencies that received grants are the Pikeland Snack Pack program, Griggsville-Perry Snack Pack program, Pleasant Hill First Baptist summer meal program, Barry Food Pantry, Crossing Food Pantry, and Two Rivers Reach-Out Food Pantry. “We saw a real spike because of COVID, and we were serving 100 families a month, Crossing Pike County campus pastor Jamie Reel said. While COVID-19 created greater need for the church’s food pantry, the food pantry’s main source of funding — the Crossing thrift store — was shut down due to the pandemic, creating budget shortfalls. “The bills just kept coming in, Reel said. “That $5,000 sustained us for about four months. It was a blessing and very unexpected. Rachel Baker, Two Rivers Reach-Out Center manager, says that recent increases in COVID-19 cases in Pike County and neighboring counties, have created a spike in customers at the Reach-Out Center food pantry. “As the number of cases has gone up, we see increases in the elderly, who are afraid to go to supermarkets, Baker said. Baker also indicated that increased remote learning at Pike County schools this fall could further increase demand on food pantries. “It worries me about schools not fully reopening, Baker said. “We could see an increase in traffic from families with kids at home. Griggsville-Perry’s Snack Pack program, which provides weekly food distribution to G-P students/families throughout the school year, was able to provide summer food distribution and increase summer participation in the program with the Health and Wellness Foundation grant. “We had more participants this summer, G-P Snack Pack treasurer Lynn Curry said. “Part of the increased enrollment was the grant allowing us to include

a certificate for fresh perishable produce and dairy items at County Market and SaveA-Lot. Curry said the grant was particularly important due to COVID-19 restrictions causing the cancelation of the G-P Snack Pack’s largest fundraiser, a Memorial Day fish fry. “The support of the foundation and everyone who has donated has kept us going, Curry said. “Nutritious food is so important for these families. McIntosh went on to emphasize that spring school closures and remote learning in some districts this fall create greater need among lowincome and food insecure families in Pike County. “Because COVID necessitated the schools closing earlier in the school year, many students have not had access to those meals, McIntosh went on to say. “We are aware of the correlating increased burden this placed on the organizations providing meals and food supplies throughout the county. We applaud these great organizations who are helping feed Pike County families and intend that our grants help them to continue to serve the growing number of families, youth and seniors who depend on these programs without interruption or constraints. According to McIntosh, an April 22, 2020 study put out by “Feeding America stated that households with children are more likely to be food insecure. In 2018, 11.2 million children (one in seven), lived in a foodinsecure household. The study went on to project that, due to the negative economic impacts of COVID-19, up to 18.0 million children nationally (one in four) could experience food insecurity — and a disproportionate number of these hungry children would come from rural communities.

Pikeland board moves forward toward in-person learning

By DAVID CAMPHOUSE Pike Press With a 6-1 vote, Pikeland’s school board at its Tuesday, July 28 special board meeting approved a return-to-school plan that involves in-person classroom learning for all grades. Board member Tara Bradshaw cast the single dissenting vote. “The board voted to move forward with the plan we discussed at the last regular board meeting, Pikeland superintendent Dr. Carol Kilver said. “Our goal is to return to in-person learning in gradual steps. The school year will commence with a series of “Saukee start days, which will phase groups of students in to in-person learning on a grade-by-grade basis on August 20, 21, 24, and 25. Aug. 26 will be a district-wide remote learning day, and face-to-face learning will commence Friday, Aug.27. Pre-k is scheduled to begin face-to-face Sep. 8. The school day is scheduled to run from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. through Labor Day. Kilver said the length of the school day and every aspect of the school environment will be continually reassessed and adjusted. “You may see the time in school incrementally creep up, Kilver said. Superintendent Kilver said that IESA and IHSA sports and other extracurricular activities are also being assessed and tweaked with state-level guidance. “Our primary goal is instilling in students a sense of belonging and normalcy, Kilver said of the importance of school extracurricular activities in students’ lives. “As a district, though, we need to look at the difference between what is essential and what is nice. Kilver noted that an abbreviated school day would pose significant challenges in the delivery of a broad curriculum, and that the district is focused on making sure that students gain the basic skills for academic advancement. “We are focused on subjects like reading and math, Kilver said. “Teachers are isolating skills that are essential for stu-

dents moving forward. But we also don’t want any teacher of any subject to feel ‘less than’. July 28, Pikeland also released a document which outlined detailed protocols for student hygiene and transportation. Parents of students riding Pikeland busses are asked to self-certify the health of their students, keep ill children home, communicate with the transportation director 48 hours in advance regarding changes in riding patterns and wait with their student(s) until they have boarded the bus. Busses will be limited to 50 or less riders. On the bus, students must maintain social distancing when possible and use face coverings. In addition, bus seating charts will be used, and buses will be sanitized after each route. An attendance checklist was included in the document, which requires all Pikeland students to have a cloth face mask, to complete a self-certification of the absence of COVID-19 symptoms, be fever/illness free, to have not had contact with anyone with COVID-19 and to sanitize their backpacks on a daily basis. Water bottles and hand sanitizer are recommended. “The beginning of this school year is an exciting but challenging time, Kilver said. “It will require that we all revisit the concept of patience and require a great deal of transparency and communication. In closed session, the board also approved the following hires: Candy Collard — part-time nurse — districtwide, Paul Petty — full-time substitute teacher — physical education and law enforcement — PHS; Betsy Pulliam — first semester math teacher — PHS; Hannah Scranton — special education teacher 6-8 —PCS; Spencer Boren — overload of one block, 20-21 — PHS; Jody Heavner — overload of one block, 20-21 — PHS; Debbie Stendback — overload of one block, 20-21 — PHS; Mark Still — overload of one block, 20-21 — PHS; Greg Bonnett — volunteer bass fishing coach — PHS; Audrie Weir — volunteer assistant cheerleading coach — PHS.

By BETH ZUMWALT Pike Press William Poor, 34, Pittsfield, did not appear for his July 22 court date. According to Illinois Department of Corrections officials, Poor refused to participate in a Zoom meeting since in-person attendance was prohibited by a COVID related lockdown at Menard, where he is being housed. Poor is charged in the March, 2019 beating death of William Witherbee at Witherbee’s home in Pittsfield. According to Pike County State’s Attorney Zack Boren, Poor has filed a letter claiming he did not refuse to participate. “But that is the exact opposite of what we were told by a representative from Menard Correctional Center, Boren said. “The next step is another Zoom court appearance set for Aug. 10 at 11 a.m.. It appears he wants to participate in that conference. We need to set another motions hearing date and determine how to get DOC to bring him here for it. “ When asked if Poor could be tried in

After a five-day search, Kyle Pressnall, 34, Pleasant Hill, was arrested July 27 at a residence on Bee Creek, near Pearl. Pressnall’s arrest was announced in a joint press release by the Pike County Sheriff’s Office and the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office. The search for Pressnall began July 22 when the Pike County Sheriff’s Department executed a court-authorized search warrant at a residence located in the 400 block of Mill Street in Milton in Pike County, in reference to a burglary, theft and methamphetamine investigation. Upon law enforcement’s arrival at the residence, Pressnall, was seen leaving the residence. A Pike County Deputy Sheriff attempted to initiate a traffic stop on Pressnall due to Pressnall having an active arrest warrant. Pressnall failed to stop and fled from the deputy at speeds over 100 mph. The chase continued south down Rte. 100 for several miles but was terminated due to safety concerns around Panther Creek in Calhoun County. The Pike County Sheriff’s Department and Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office worked together throughout the next several days in an attempt to locate Pressnall. In addition to the arrest warrant, Pressnall was a suspect in burglary and theft cases throughout Pike and Calhoun Counties. Pressnall’s vehicle was recovered from a field between Crooked Creek Road and State Highway 96 in Calhoun County. absentia, Boren said that can only happen after an arraignment which means Poor formerly entered a plea of guilty or not guilty. “His case has not reached that point yet, Boren said. “We need to litigate his motions and then have him enter a plea. Poor is currently housed in the Menard Correctional Facility after he was sentenced on an escape charge when he left a drug-treatment center without authorization, but did not return to the Pike County Jail. His original charge was domestic battery. Poor was originally assigned Ryan Schnack and Barney Bier as counsel in the murder case but asked that he be allowed to represent himself in May. Since then, he has filed motions asking for the substitution of Judge Frank McCartney which were denied. He has also filed motions asking for a throat and neck specialist, a mental health expert and a bloodstain/splatter expert. He is to be in court Monday, Aug. 10 at 11 a.m. to be heard on his motions. Attends bridal shower for great-granddaughter We attended a bridal shower for Brenlee Damon Saturday at the old senior citizens building in Pittsfield. It was a lovely shower. I also got to see Lynn Cox, another granddaughter, who lives in the St. Louis area. I hadn’t seen her for a long time.

Brian Black, Brenlee’s finance, had a bachelor party, also. I have no birthdays this week. Congratulations to Brian Damon, my grandson, who is retiring from the Illinois Department of Corrections.

IDNR public hunting access expands deer and squirrel sites The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) today announced an additional archery deer hunting opportunity in 2020 through the Illinois Recreational Access Program (IRAP). IRAP has added a third archery deer hunting period December 16-31. “With archery deer hunting in high demand for IRAP, we asked landowners if they would allow for hunting in December and many were willing, said IRAP Manager Tammy Miller. IRAP archery deer hunting will now be available this year October 1-15, October 16-31, and December 16-31 for licensed hunters to hunt on private land. There are currently 256 hunting sites available through IRAP in 34 counties across Illinois. IRAP this year has also added opportunities during the Illinois Youth Firearm Deer Season Oct. 10-12, with at least 24 privateland sites already enrolled in the program. Applications for IRAP deer hunting are now being accepted through 5 p.m. Aug. 24, 2020. A lottery drawing will be held at the end of August and successful applicants will be notified and sent a site permit along with directions

and a map of the property on which they will hunt. IRAP is open to both resident and non-resident hunters. IRAP deer hunting applications can be found on the IDNR website at this link: https://www2.illinois.gov/ dnr/conservation/IRAP/ Pages/Archery-Deer-Hunting.aspx IRAP also has squirrel hunting opportunities available. There are more than 3,500 acres in 17 counties that IRAP hunters can access. To squirrel hunt on one of these sites, hunters must go online and register as an IRAP participant, then make a reservation online reserving their preferred site. Squirrel hunting on IRAP leased property will be available Aug. 1- Sept. 15. Reservation information for IRAP squirrel hunting can be found at online at this link: https://www2.

illinois.gov/dnr/conservation/IRAP/Pages/SmallGame-Hunting.aspx The IRAP program has more than 24,000 acres leased in Illinois and is funded through a federal Voluntary Public Access Habitat Improvement Program grant from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. IRAP provides multiple public access opportunities such as turkey, archery deer, youth firearm deer, small game, waterfowl and upland bird hunting as well as pond and riverbank fishing. In addition to leasing private property, IRAP conducts habitat management on these leased properties. For more information, visit https://www2.illinois.gov/dnr/conservation/ IRAP/Pages/default.aspx or e-mail DNR.IRAP@illinois.gov

Barry approves Baker Autobody loan, resurfaces streets

By DAVID CAMPHOUSE Pike Press Prior to the Monday, Aug. 3 Barry city council meeting, the city’s revolving loan committee met to discuss a $16,000 loan to Baker Autobody as part of the city’s revolving loan program. The loan was subsequently approved by the full council. Baker Autobody will use the loan to create initial inventory for a small used car lot at the business. “Final terms of the loan haven’t been set, Barry City Manager Jeff Hogge said. “We try and work with the business on what works for them. The interest rate will be 3 percent or lower, and for that loan amount, repayment will be three years. Barry public works employees paved three streets with funds from the motor fuel tax. According to Hogge, city crews paved Mason from Rogers to Green, Williams from Decatur

to Perry, and 310th Avenue from County Highway 4 to the marijuana plant. “They got the paving done in one day, Hogge said. During the code enforcement report, Hogge stated properties within the city are getting cleaned up through ongoing code enforcement and monitoring. In addition, tires may be dropped off at Barry’s sewer plant through Thursday, Aug. 6. The public may drop off any size tire, but rims must be removed prior to drop-off. Board members also discussed proposed traffic control measures on 310th Avenue, due to concerns on the roadway during shift changes at Barry’s Ascend marijuana plant. The plant had requested a speed bump be installed, however Hogge said that the new pavement on the roadway could not accommodate a speed bump without damaging the road. No resolution was reached, but discussion of the matter is ongoing.
