Down on The Farm by Jeanette Wallace Campbell Publications Sometimes even in small rural counties there are businesses that many consider hidden gems. The Farm is one of those businesses. “We sell home decor type items,” Amy Duncan, owner, said. She explained that along with rugs, candles and decorations, she also sells antiques and primitives. Duncan recently expanded the business by opening up more of the existing floor space in the store. The Farm opened at 414 Hillview Road (the Hillview blacktop) just outside Winchester a little over two years ago but Duncan owned a store by the name of Country Homes in Carrolton before moving to Winchester. “I’ve been in business 13 years going on 14,” she said. “It’s just something I’ve wanted to do since I was young.” When she was growing up, Duncan would attend auctions with family members. After a while she started

“I’ve been in business 13 years going on 14. It’s just something I’ve wanted to do since I was young.”

Amy Duncan Owner accumulating items and began to set up a traveling business to sell the items at vendor fairs and craft shows. Eventually she decided that it would be a good idea to have a store at a physical location but she and her husband, Tim, still visit some of the bigger events in the area such as the Pike County Color Drive. “That’s actually one we still go to,” Duncan said. The Farm is open Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Besides the physical store, Duncan also designs seasonal items such as fabric pumpkins, snowmen and different types of ornaments to sell wholesale to other companies around the country and Canada. Duncan designs the items and she employes three women who do the sewing to create them. The Farm’s spring open house was just held last weekend but its garden center open house will be held April 2627 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Those days, Duncan will feature the outdoor items for sale such as benches and garden decorations as well as plants. More information about The Farm can be found on their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/pages/TheFarm/229219933846799.

Upcycling: Transforming the ‘Old’ into a Better ‘New’ Turn old or discarded furniture, cabinets and doors into fresh new creations through “upcycling” -- high-end “recycling” that reduces trash at landfills by refurbishing or repurposing existing pieces, often enhancing the value. Upcycling Projects n Family furniture: Save chairs, tables, and other furniture passed down through the generations by doing repairs, if needed, and staining/painting to suit your current decor. n Other furniture or “yard sale finds”: These also can be stabilized and given a new look through stain/paint or distressing, but some may also lend themselves to transformation for other uses, such as turning a chest of drawers into bookshelves, a chair into a swing, a dresser into a seat, and more. n Doors and more: Solid wood doors make great tops for tables and kitchen islands, old-fashioned screen doors hung from the ceiling can store pots and pans, and old windows make attractive wall hangings used “as is” or with additions, such as photos. n Cabinets: Change the look of your kitchen, bathroom or workshop with a new color for your cabinets and new handles and pulls.

Consignment Shops growing in popularity Consignment & Thrift stores have grown in popularity in recent years, particularly among bargain hunters. In addition to offering great deals, such shops offer a wide variety of merchandise including antiques, house wares, clothing, home décor, tools and more . Although thrift stores and consignment shops seem similar, there are differences between their business models. Thrift stores accept donated merchandise and sell it as their own for profit, many times to benefit a charity. The person who has donated the merchandise receives no compensation, although he or she may be eligible for a tax deduction depending on the size of the donation. Consignment stores act as third-party sellers, or consignees. The individual bringing in the merchandise -- the consignor -- is the rightful owner of any items at the consignment store until the point of sale. He or she negotiates a contract with the consignment store that indicates how profits of items sold will be split. The store will keep a percentage of the money, while the person whose items have been sold will get a share as well. Should the items not be sold within a certain period of time, they can be returned to the original owner. Many consignment stores specialize in a particular type of merchandise. This enables them to keep a specific stock and carefully limit their inventories. Antiques are quite popular at consignment shops, as are household items and designer clothing. Some consignment shops specialize in baby items, as such items turn over quickly. Visiting a consignment store is not only cost-effective, but also an environmentally friendly way to shop for or dispose of items that still have utility. Many items at consignment stores are in excellent condition. For example, clothing on sale at such stores may only have been worn a few times. Consignment stores present an excellent way to clear out unused items and make some money in the process. They also can be places shoppers turn to for discounts on items that have been gently used.

Restoring secondhand furniture Men and women furnish their homes and apartments in various ways. For some, home furnishings are an extension of their personalities, while others prioritize budget over style when furnishing their domiciles. Secondhand furniture has long been used to furnish homes and apartments. While young people working with tight budgets and living in their first apartments might be the most likely to rely on secondhand furniture, such items are not exclusive to recent college graduates and young professionals. Homeowners with a love of antiques or those who simply can’t resist thrift store bargains also are likely to lean on secondhand furniture. Used furnishings range from high-end antiques to bargain bin chairs and couches. Antiques often come fully restored, but that still leaves legions of shoppers who need to bring their secondhand furnishings back to life. The following are a few ways to do just that. n Embrace your inner Picasso. A fresh coat of paint can go a long way toward stylizing secondhand furniture. Items that have been through a lot before making it to your home may benefit from some sanding before receiving a fresh coat of paint. Once items have been sanded, smoothed and cleaned, apply some primer before dusting off your paintbrush. Primer makes it easier for the fresh coat of paint to bond to the furniture, making

it less likely that the new coat will chip or crack in the months to come. After applying primer, the painting can commence. Two to three coats should be sufficient to give the item a fresh new look. Allow the item to dry for several hours before showing it off and putting it to good use. n Upgrade old upholstery. Old chairs and couches tend to have ample wear and tear. But such items are still useful as long as their bones are still sturdy, even if cushions have flattened out and fabric is suffering from tears or stains. Reupholstering old furniture can turn inexpensive but worn down older items into seemingly brand new pieces at a fraction of the cost of new furniture. n Wash away years of wear and tear. Restoring secondhand furniture can sometimes be as easy as washing away years of wear and tear. Old chests of drawers, dressers or armoires might just need a good scrubbing to look as good as new. Before cleaning older furniture, remove the old wax with a stripper bought at a hardware store. Old coats of wax can prevent cleaners from reaching the surface of the furniture, so they must be removed for cleaning products to be effective. When cleaning old furniture, it’s a good idea to solicit advice from antique dealers, who can help you avoid damaging the piece even further.

Older furniture can be both practical and chic, and there are many ways to bring such items back to life without breaking the bank.

What are the health benefits of EVOO? The Technical Reason: Extra Virgin Olive oil is an important source of antioxidants. The most important are polyphenols, antioxidants, and tocopherols (vitamin E). There are as many as 5.5 mg of polyphenols antioxidant in every tablespoon of olive oil (15 ml) and 1.6 mg of Vitamin E per tablespoon of olive oil. Total proximate of antioxidants: 7 mg in every 15 ml of olive oil. The US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of antioxidents (vitamins, minerals, polyphenols, etc.) for a 25-year old male for Antioxidants is 120 mg/day. That means that extra virgin olive oil could be 12 % of the daily source of antioxidants in your diet if you just use two tablespoon of EVOO in your salads. And it could be almost 30 % if you drizzled it over fish/meat or roast vegetables or used it for bread dipping. Why it’s important to consume antioxidants? Because they are associated with several healthful effects in humans. The Simple Reason: Olive Oil is good for you because it: n Taste good n Is an excellent source of monounsaturated dietary fat n Contains potent antioxidants n Improves your LDL blood serum component n Adds natural luster to hair n Strengthens fingernails n Adds oil to dry skin n Aids in digestion and regularity n High vitamin A, D, K and E content n Stimulates bone growth and absorption of calcium Aren’t we lucky to have something that tastes so good also contributing to our health? The father of modern medicine noted its importance to good health and recommended “a spoonful a day” to aid in digestion — a suggestion still offered today.

Greene keeps State Street Antiques and Collectibles fun Judy Greene has been selling myriad mementos of the past in her Jerseyville shop, State Street Antiques and Collectibles, for 16 years. The 10,000-square-foot building in the historic downtown houses a little bit of everything, according to Greene. “We specialize in a walk down memory lane and friendly service. Shopping at State Street Antiques gives you the opportunity to find that special something and, at the same time, support the local economy,” Greene said. “Our line of merchandise includes antiques and collectibles both large and small.” Offerings range from early advertising items, antique furniture and housewares to jewelry and any other interesting things that people might want in their homes. Though many of the items in the store are Greene’s to sell, she also offers a store front for several vendors. She said her network of vendors is like a family, and that the store is a lighthearted place to visit. “All the vendors are here anytime I need them,” Greene said. “We have a lot of fun.” Being in this business has come to be something she loves. “It’s very rewarding,” she said. Greene said she likes being in Jerseyville because it’s smalltown atmosphere, is a great place to operate, and that the town does a good job supporting the enterprise.

Easy ways to update your home now Oftentimes, buying a home opens up a bottomless pit of opportunities for projects and improvements. While some homeowners engage in different repairs and fix-ups out of necessity, many others like to freshen-up their spaces out of personal preference instead of need. But even the most wellintentioned projects can be waylaid if budgets are tight. What many homeowners may not realize is that there are many ways to make updates and changes to a home that do not require a major overhaul or a large price tag. The following are projects that won’t break the bank. n Move around furniture. You may be able to change the look of a room with very little money. Interior designers know how to arrange furniture for maximum appeal, but the average homeowner can do it, too. Find a focal point in the room and angle the furniture toward it. Don’t make the focal point the television, however. Try changing the placement of chairs and sofas. Simply moving a curio cabinet from one corner to another may also make a difference. Finish by adding just a few new pieces of home dÊcor such as a floral arrangement or some new figurines. n Add lighting. Lighting at different levels in the room can create a vibrant impact. Sometimes a couple of table lamps is all that is needed. Properly illuminating a room means varying

the lighting to create different moods at different times. Plus, more light can make a room feel more welcoming. n Add new pillows or drapes. Changing a few aspects of a room can give it an entirely new look. If you want to add a splash of color but don’t know what to do, think about incorporating some new throw pillows or change the curtains. An accessory here and there in a bright color also can incorporate a new hue without it being overwhelming. n Change knobs or small accents. Give a room a new look by focusing on the small details. Switch out cabinet knobs for something updated and modern. Take inventory of wall outlets and light switches and think about selecting new ones that coordinate with your home decor. n Use plants. Empty corners or spots you’re not certain how to fill may benefit from a plant. Plants are inexpensive ways to add instant color and visual appeal to a room. A home with plants feels more cozy. n Hang new wall art. It may be time to look at your photos and artwork and make a few adjustments. Finding new prints or new wall decor to hang could instantly change a room’s ambience..

When you get inspired to make improvements to the home but fear how much it may take out of your wallet, consider inexpensive tricks that can induce a big “wow” factor.

Making it personal Whether she’s still hard at work raising children or her kids have grown up and now have children of their own, she deserves our best efforts in gift giving. And while traditional gifts like fresh flowers and chocolate might make for thoughtful gifts, those who want to go the extra mile consider the following unique gift ideas available at many gift shops. n Affordable Jewelry. It doesn’t have to be high-end gold or silver. Many gift shops carry a wide array of costume jewelry that will give her the “put together” look. Vintage is in as well as leathers & unpolished pieces. Mix-matching these will give her a personal style. n Scarves are not just for winter. The colors, materials, and styles available for Spring & Summer make it a must have accessory that can be bought at specialty gift shops. Scarves can be worn in so many ways around the neck or waist that the possibilities are endless. n Silk floral arrangements are practical for the home, yet personal for her. Using the colors of your home décor & her individual preferences this could be just what she wants (& needs). n Garden Décor for her enjoyment. Purchasing a garden statue or a stone with a sentimental engraving could be just what she needs to cheer her up. Or possibly she would enjoy a garden flag to wave in the gentle breeze. Whether she’s looking out the window or sitting in a garden chair, these items can become very personal. n A purse that stands out. Is it time for her to retire that old purse. The offerings of bright colors & bold styles at gift shops today can make it possible for her to have a purse that few others have. n A clock that’s just for her. Pick out a clock that that she will cherish as a reminder of all the great times. Or have a family heirloom clock repaired. Using just a little thought & a little effort, you can become her favorite by giving a memorable gift. Let her know how much you care & appreciate what she does.
