Statement of Purpose Campbell University is a university of the liberal arts, sciences, and professions which is committed to helping students develop an integrated Christian personality characterized by a wholeness of body, mind, and spirit that includes: a method of critical judgement; and appreciation of the intellectual, cultural, and religious heritage; stewardship of the body; and a sensitive awareness of the world and society in which they live and work with persons. Campbell University is a Baptist University affiliated with the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. Both in and out of the classroom, the university endeavors to present Christian principles to students and to foster their application to daily life. The purpose of Campbell University arises out of three basic theological and Biblical presuppositions: learning is appointed and conserved by God as essential to the fulfillment of human destiny; in Christ all things consist and find ultimate unity; and the Kingdom of God in this world is rooted and grounded in Christian community. Therefore, the mission of Campbell University, as a community of Christian scholars, is to: • Provide students with a Christian world view; • Bring the word of God, mind of Christ, and power of the Spirit to bear in developing moral courage, social sensitivity, and ethical responsibility that will inspire a productive and faithful maturation as individuals and as citizens; • Transfer from one generation to the next the vast body of knowledge and values accumulated over the ages; • Encourage creativity, imagination, and rigor in the use of intellectual skills; • Affirm the university’s commitment to the belief that truth is never one-dimensional but in wholeness is revelatory, subjective, and transcendent as well as empirical, objective, and rational, and that truth finds its unity in the mind of Christ; • Frame university teaching in the context of a liberal arts education seeking to free persons to live more abundantly and securely in an ever-changing social order; • Foster stewardship in nurturing gifts of the mind and in developing aesthetic sensibilities; • Equip students with superior vocational skills, productive insights, and professional integrity; • Provide a community of learning that is committed to the pursuit, discovery, and dissemination of knowledge to serve the region as well as national and international communities; • Prepare students for purposeful lives and Christian service throughout the world through undergraduate, graduate, and professional instruction including terminal graduate and professional programs; • Provide services to the general community through research efforts, continuing education, cultural enrichment programs, and extended campus education; • Cooperate with other educational institutions for the advancement of mankind; This university sees the human vocation as living by faith under grace, with no conflict between the life of faith and the life of inquiry.

E. Bruce Heilman Leadership Lecture Series Announced By Susan Welch, Staff Writer, and Shannon Ryals, Assistant Director of Publications ampbell University recognized the C launch of the E. Bruce Heilman Leadership Lecture series on February 19, 2008.

The E. Bruce Heilman Leadership Lecture Series will complement the University’s call for servant leadership. The lecture series is designed to provide a forum through which decorated scholars and distinguished professionals explore the role of leaders in addressing the challenges facing academic disciplines and professions in the 21st century. The series builds on the experience and creativity of its participants as leaders in a changing world, within the context of Christian higher education. The lecture series is funded through the generous support of The E. Bruce Heilman Lectures Endowment Fund. “Campbell University decided on the E. Bruce Heilman Leadership Lecture Series because it was consistent with who we are as a university,” said Dr. Dwaine Greene, vice president of academic affairs and provost. Dr. E. Bruce Heilman, Chancellor at the University of Richmond, delivered the inaugural lecture titled “Servant Leadership in Higher Education, Business and elsewhere.” “I emphasize higher education because you have the best example of servant leadership in your late president and chancellor of some 40 years, Dr. Norman A. Wiggins,” Heilman said. “His life was the personification of all this university stands for in its reputation, its presence, size and scope. For those who want an example to follow in any facet of Christian leadership, you only have to review his life and thus the history of this institution during the long years of his tenure.”

Prior to his association with the University of Richmond, Heilman served as President at Meredith College from 1966 to 1988. Dr. Heilman has served as a consultant to many educational, religious and charitable organizations. He was selected as one of the “100 Most Effective College and University Presidents in the USA” through an Exxon Foundation sponsored study. The lectures will be held once a year and rotated among the schools. The School of Education will host the lecture series in early spring 2009. “We look forward with joy to the stimulation this lecture series promises to bring the University through many years,” said Greene.

Metz becomes Director

of Institutional

Research and Assessment

r. Timothy D. Metz, chair of the Department of Biological Sciences at Campbell University, has been named director of Institutional Research and Assessment, effective fall 2008. Metz, whose research interests include plant molecular biology, plant breeding and genetics, said the skill sets of a biologist aren’t that far removed from those his new position will require. “My experience and skills are a good match for the job requirements of director of Institutional Research,” he said. “I’ve always enjoyed developing surveys and analyzing data for correlations and trends. I am good at simplifying and summarizing complex information.” As director of Institutional Research, Metz will conduct research that supports institutional planning, decisionmaking, management and external reporting and will oversee and coordinate the assessment functions of the university. Some of his responsibilities will include generating information on vital university operations, programs and long-term emerging trends, generating and maintaining a university fact book and maintaining on-going reports on critical information such as student admission, retention, graduation, program costs and others. “I particularly want to help simplify the process of assessment and make it more understandable for the faculty,” Metz said. Metz received a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Sciences from the University of Illinois in Urbana, graduating with honors. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in botany from Cornell University. Metz came to Campbell as an assistant professor of biology in 1994 and was named chairman of Biological Sciences in 2001. He will continue to teach one biology class per term.

Collaborate in Research Project

Michelle Thomas and recent graduate Melissa Cooper (‘08) collaborated on a research project that could contribute towards future antibiotic development. “I cannot stress how much I enjoy working with undergraduate students on research projects,” said Thomas. Thomas came up with the idea for this specific research project while working on her own post-doctoral research. “When I knew for certain I was going to join Campbell University as a faculty member it became important to me to develop ideas for research projects that could be done with undergraduate students,” she said. She explained that a dividing bacterium will form a protein ring at the site of cell division leading to the pinching of the cell into two. The ring is formed from the FtsZ protein and is referred to as the Z-Ring. This project involved cloning of the FtsZ gene from various bacterial species so future studies could be done to determine if these organisms divide in the same manner as some of the model organisms such as E. coli. “Dr. Harold Erickson and Dr. Masaki Osawa from Duke University provided bacterial strains and plasmids so we could begin cloning FtsZ genes from different bacterial species into E. coli,” said Thomas. “Melissa first determined that this system could be used by undergraduate students here at Campbell University and then proceeded in cloning the FtsZ genes into E. coli. Melissa was successful in her research and this forward progress will now be utilized by other students who will continue the project.” Melissa not only has worked with Dr. Thomas for the past year on this project, but she has completed two summer research internships. Her first internship was

in the “Summer Pre-Graduate Research Experience” at UNC Chapel Hill. She has also participated in the GlaxoSmithKline Women in Science Scholars. Melissa has been accepted at Duke University and will be working on her Ph.D. in the Cell and Molecular Biology program. “The most rewarding and pleasurable role as a faculty member at Campbell is having the opportunity to foster and mentor students in scientific research,” said Thomas. “The mentoring does not occur in just one semester but instead requires a two- to- three year time period where we have ample opportunity to work one on one with a student. It is this type of mentoring that provides the student and the faculty with the most rewards. Mentoring Melissa over the past three years truly has been one of the most pleasurable and enriching experiences for me.”

Dean’s Excellence In Teaching Award School of Pharmacy

Dr. Richard H. Drew Dr. Richard H. Drew, a nationally recognized expert in infectious disease and pharmacotherapy, has received the Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award from the Campbell University School of Pharmacy. Drew joined the pharmacy faculty in 1998 in a co-funded faculty position arranged with Duke University Medical Center where he had served as a clinical pharmacist since his residency in 1980. He has been affiliated with the infectious disease unit at Duke University Medical Center since 1986. A highly sought-after speaker at national and international conferences involving infectious disease topics, Drew has been published in over 60 refereed publications. Shortly after joining the faculty, Drew partnered with Dr. Byron May to develop a new advanced pharmacy residency program in internal medicine/infectious disease academics. Five of these residency program graduates have also joined the Campbell pharmacy faculty. In addition, Drew has mentored many other faculty members, helping them to excel in their research and scholarly activity. Among them are Drs. Melanie Pound and Mary Townsend who have authored or co-authored several refereed articles. “Much of this output and the high quality of this work can be attributed to the excellent mentoring by Dr. Drew,” said Dr. Larry Swanson, chairman of the Department of Pharmacy Practice. Drew also works closely with other School of Pharmacy residents, assisting them with their main residency projects.

Dean’s Excellence In Teaching Award Divinity School

Dr. George Braswell Distinguished theological educator, Baptist leader and missionary to the Middle East, Dr. George Braswell has received the 2008 Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award from the Campbell University Divinity School. Braswell is Senior Professor of World Religions. “Most significant in Dr. Braswell’s service is his leadership during the past academic year in the opening of the Divinity School’s first Center for the Study of World Religions and Global Cultures,” said Dr. Michael Cogdill, dean of the Divinity School. “The purpose of this Center is to advance the study and awareness of the many global cultures surrounding our own and helping students and others learn effective ways to proclaim the gospel of Christ in a multi-cultural world.” A graduate of Wake Forest University and Yale Divinity School, Braswell earned a Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served as a missionary to Iran from 1964-1967 and is an established expert in the study of Islam and other world religions. Before joining the Campbell Divinity School faculty in 2005, Braswell taught at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary from 1974-2004. “Dr. Braswell is an excellent example of the quality of professors at Campbell University,” Cogdill said. “He has devoted his life to the training and education of future Christian leaders.”

Dean’s Excellence In Teaching Award School of Education

Dr. Carolyn H. Maidon Dr. Carolyn H. Maidon, assistant professor of education, has received the Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award from the Campbell University School of Education. She is the director of the North Carolina Teaching Fellows program at Campbell. A graduate of Oklahoma State University, Maidon holds both a Master of Education and a doctoral degree from North Carolina State University. She has worn many hats as an educator, including teaching biology and English at Cary High School; working in higher education at N.C. State University, eventually becoming the director of the Teacher Education Division; and later working with the state of North Carolina’s Department of Public Instruction. In addition, Maidon has been a part-time faculty member of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and worked as an educational consultant and grant writer. She joined the faculty of Campbell University in 2003. “Dr. Maidon has taught both undergraduate and graduate students at Campbell, sharing with them her enthusiasm for the teaching profession,” said Dr. Karen Nery, dean of the School of Education. “She encourages students to think for themselves, to be problem solvers and to be responsible for their own education.” In 2006, Maidon developed the North Carolina Teaching Fellows program at Campbell. The first cohort of teaching fellows began in fall 2007. “Under the leadership of Dr. Maidon, the program has experienced great success and has enhanced the curriculum offered in the School of Education at Campbell,” said Nery.

Dean’s Excellence In Teaching Award College of Arts and Sciences

Dr. Lloyd Jonson Dr. Lloyd Jonson, associate professor of history, received the 2008 Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award from Campbell University’s College of Arts and Sciences. Johnson was called a “cornerstone of the Government, History and Justice Department,” by Dr. Mark Hammond, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “Lloyd continues to be a prolific international scholar,” Hammond said. “But above all else, he is a well-respected and inspirational teacher of history.” Johnson is the author of a book on Welsh settlers in the South, “The Frontier in the Colonial South: South Carolina Backcountry, 1736-1800,” and has made numerous presentations on his research in Wales, Britain and the U.S. He has also appeared in the BBC documentary, “Roots in Wales.” In addition he has published entries in the “Encyclopedia of North Carolina History,” the “African-American Encyclopedia of History,” and the “Encyclopedia of South Carolina History.” He has been a book review contributor for scholarly publications, including the “Journal of Southern History,” “North Carolina Historical Review,” the “William & Mary Quarterly,” “Baptist History and Heritage,” and the “Georgia Historical Quarterly” His article on Welsh in the Carolinas was published in “Western Mail,” a national newspaper of Cardiff, Wales. Johnson graduated from Campbell University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in history and a Master of Education degree in Counselor Education. He also earned a Master of Arts in American history from East Carolina University and a doctoral degree in American history from the University of South Carolina. He returned to teach at Campbell in 1991.

Dean’s Excellence In Research Award Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law

Johnny C. Chriscoe, Jr. Associate Professor of Law Johnny C. Chriscoe, Jr., has received the 2008 Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award from Campbell University’s Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law. Chriscoe is also the recipient of the 2008 Student Bar Association’s Professor of the Year Award, the second time he has received the award since joining the Campbell law faculty in 2000. A summa cum laude graduate of the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law, Chriscoe served as a clerk for the North Carolina Court of Appeals and spent several years in litigation practice. He returned to the Campbell Law School in 1995 to teach part-time and serve as associate dean of External Relations. In 2000, he became a full-time professor, currently teaching Torts I and II, Insurance Law, Trial Advocacy, Advanced Trial and Appellate Advocacy and Personal Property law. In addition, Chriscoe serves on several law school committees, coaches trial teams and was appointed to the board of directors for North Carolina Prisoner Legal Services, a non-profit, public service organization that provides post-conviction and civil legal services to the incarcerated population of North Carolina. He currently serves as vice president of that board. Chriscoe has taught in various continuing education legal seminars and published in the area of civil procedure. Melissa Essary, dean of the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of law, praised his performance. “This award is in recognition of Professor Chriscoe’s dedication to our law school and to its students and for his commitment to excellence in legal education,” she said.

Thomas F. Taylor Thomas F. Taylor, assistant professor of Trust, received the 2008 Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award from the Lundy-Fetterman School of Business. A native of Jackson, Tenn., Taylor holds a Bachelor of Arts in history from Lambuth University, a Juris Doctor from Vanderbilt Law School and a Master of Laws in Banking, Corporate and Finance Law from Fordham University. Taylor brings 20 years of experience as a senior trust officer to the classroom. “He comes equipped with a wealth of practical experience in the field of Trust and Wealth Management,” said Dr. Ben Hawkins, dean of the School of Business. “He gives students excellent classroom preparation in the areas of investment analysis, real estate management, employee benefits, trust and estate administration, financial planning and legal and regulatory issues.” Taylor was also in private legal practice for a period of five years. His research interests include consumer protection and ethical behavior in the marketplace, and he has been published in the “Fordham International Law Journal.”

Deans’ Awards

Campbell University Established in 1887 as an academy with a charter-class enrollment of sixteen students, Campbell grew to junior college status in 1926, then became a senior college in 1961. In 1979, the college became a university and has since developed into a major institution enrolling over 9,000 students both within the United States and around the world. Established as a liberal arts college, the academic program of Campbell University was greatly expanded in 1976 when the trustees authorized the establishment of graduate programs in education and business and the awarding of the Master of Education and Master of Business Administration degrees. A Juris Doctor degree program was also begun in 1976 with the establishment of the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law. The Doctor of Pharmacy degree was approved in 1985 with the establishment of the Campbell University School of Pharmacy. The Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sixth, and newest, school Campbell University Divinity School, was established in 1995 and enrolled its charter class in 1996. Affiliated with the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, Campbell University is committed to the mission of providing quality education in a Christian environment.
