FROM THE PROVOST

C

ampbell University asked a lot of its faculty in the 2016-17 academic year. It launched a new school of engineering, began courses for juniors entering its new Bachelor of Nursing degree program and sent its first class of osteopathic physicians into the world. It called on faculty in the more established programs to educate the strongest incoming class academically in the University’s 130-year history. And it challenged faculty to continue their diligent work in the library, in the laboratory, in the field, in clinical settings and in their communities to constantly develop and refine themselves as scholars and professionals. I’m happy to report that Campbell’s faculty stepped up to the challenge and more. Because of the dedicated men and women who are educating the next generation of leaders, Campbell University now enrolls more native-born North Carolinians than any other private college or university in the world. True to the University’s mission, Campbell faculty are purposeful, existing to prepare our students to make a difference in the lives of others. They are mission-driven, challenging students to explore who they are and discover their talents, interests and calling in an environment formed and inspired by our Christian heritage. Our faculty are serviceoriented, cultivating leadership and enriching learning experiences by emphasizing service to others. And they are community minded, building a better world together one course, one program, one project and one student at a time. I am once again pleased to present to you the 2017 Accolades publication, a celebration of scholarly activity and research of not only our professors and administration, but our students as well. This publication serves as a convenient means to collect, consolidate and communicate broadly the accomplishments of the men and women representing Campbell on the front lines. Successes as editors, grant writers, researchers and presenters are included. Also highlighted are faculty who have been selected by their dean or faculty peers and recognized for outstanding accomplishments in research or teaching. It is my hope that you will find a deep appreciation of the myriad of disciplines from the academy represented at Campbell and the meaningful work being done by our faculty as evidenced by this fine publication.

Best,

Dr. Mark L. Hammond Provost, Vice President for Academic Affairs Professor of Biology

supervisors. He has devoted his efforts to improving the quality of the program and the student experience by working closely with each student in the program.

In 1995, Cogdill transitioned from chair of the Department of Religion and Philosophy to become the Divinity School’s first dean, creating curriculum, recruiting students and faculty, and making connections with churches across North Carolina.

His diligence and commitment have paid off for the Divinity School and its students. Roughly 90 percent of graduates describe the Supervised Ministry experience as very important to their Divinity education, a number that represents an uptick of fifteen percentage points since Cogdill assumed direction.

However, in 2010, after 15 years of administrative service, Cogdill returned to the faculty in the role of professor of Christian Ministry. He relinquished the deanship in order to re-enter the classroom and invest his time with students and student placement in churches, taking on the daunting task of directing Supervised Ministry. The Supervised Ministry program coordinates students with churches and ministries for a field education experience. When Cogdill assumed responsibility for the program, he quickly realized that he would need to revise the Supervised Ministry Handbook for students and the required training for

One graduating student wrote, “Dr. Cogdill seemed to model the Divinity School’s mission statement to be ‘ChristCentered, Bible-Based, and MinistryFocused.’ Passionate about Christ, the Scriptures, and ministry, Dr. Cogdill’s ardor was more than admirable — it was contagious.” Michael Cogdill is well loved by students, admired by colleagues and respected by all. — by Adam English

D.P. Russ Jr. and Walter S. Jones Sr. Alumni Award n his capacity as professor of Music Education, Ran Whitley has taught at Campbell University for over 20 years. He currently holds the Alma Dark Howard Chair of Music and has served as a faculty member and department chair, in addition to coordinating music programs for the community and the University. In an age of science and technology, Whitley has demonstrated what it means to be an academic scholar of the fine arts. In the fall of 2016,Whitley was one of two professors selected to represent Campbell at a highly distinguished international conference held at Tunku Abdul Rahman University College, and the only scholar at the entire conference to present research from the fine arts. One of Whitley’s recent publications has made a rich and important contribution to the field of music theory: Melodious Counterpoints: A Duet Companion to Joannes Rochut’s Melodious Etudes for Trombone (2014, Alan Publications). Melodious Counterpoints augments Rochut’s seminal work by allowing musicians to learn and grow through

ensemble performance experience. In addition to being listed as an editor’s choice with J. W. Pepper, America’s largest music retailer, the book is in active use by university music programs throughout the country. Melodious Counterpoints is a good, representative example of Whitley’s life work. As a composer—he has composed multiple hymns and orchestral hymn arrangements and served on the Hymn Selection Committee for the 2008 Baptist Hymnal—Whitley’s music is widely recognized, played and sung. This work, however, goes beyond the art of hymnody. As a music scholar, his expertise in music theory is rigorously applied, resulting in works that not only succeed as pieces of music but truly add to music scholarship. Bert Wallace, associate professor of Theatre, adds to Whitley’s accolades: “As a veteran minister, teacher, composer, conference presenter, and published author, his work is of real importance.”

ee Rynearson is the inaugural recipient of the Campbell Engineering Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award. Rynearson has developed a tremendously successful first-year engineering design sequence, adapting materials from Louisiana Tech and infusing it with aspects of the Purdue Honors First-Year Engineering Program and other innovations that are uniquely Campbell’s. His outstanding performance in the classroom and endless dedication to the success of each student serves as the foundation for his selection for this award. Rynearson, an assistant professor, was an inaugural faculty member in the School of Engineering, having joined Campbell in January 2016. In addition to teaching the first-year engineering design sequence, Rynearson has developed an equally successful first-year engineering seminar course and facilitated many other aspects of the roll-out of Campbell’s Engineering Program, such as setting student computing hardware and software standards and providing input on laboratory designs. Lee Rynearson earned his Ph.D. in Engineering Education from Purdue University, where he was a Future Faculty Fellow, and his BS and ME in Mechanical Engineering from The Rochester Institute of Technology. The School of Engineering takes great pride in recognizing Lee Rynearson for his excellence as a teacher.

Since joining the staff as a circulation manager, she has demonstrated a strong work ethic and competent leadership through the effective management of the circulation operation, displaying promising signs of a library professional. It was truly a wonderful gain for Campbell University Libraries as well as for the librarian profession when Dobbins decided to pursue a graduate degree in this field in 2014. Her early promise as a successful library professional was further affirmed when she was selected by the American Library Association for the Tony B. Leisner Scholarship upon her enrollment at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. As the reference and online instruction librarian, Dobbins goes above and beyond her call of duty to serve others. She has volunteered generously both her time and talent for the FIRST Robotics Team. As the Online Instruction Librarian, Elizabeth serves both as an effective teacher for as well as a champion of the students in Adult and Online Education. Dobbins is also a gifted artist who generously shares her creative talent in the design of library communication materials. She holds a Master of Science degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

Dr. Mark Steckbeck Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching

M

ark Steckbeck, associate professor of economics, earned his Bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State University and his Master’s degree from George Masson University. He also received his doctorate in economics from George Mason University where he was an OlafssonWeaver Fellow and a Lynn and Harry Bradley Fellow. Prior to arriving at Campbell in 2007, Steckbeck served on the economics faculty at Hillsdale College in Michigan. At Campbell, Steckbeck is a professor highly regarded for not only his considerable teaching skills but his level of engagement and involvement in the learning process of his students. While teaching economics courses for all business students, as well as economic majors, he emphasizes applying critical thinking to the economics topics by incorporating life experiences and examples that resonate with students. His thoughtful, questioning approach extends beyond the classroom to a weekly voluntary book discussion that consistently attracts motivated students. He also hosts regular colloquiums in Raleigh where students and faculty from surrounding universities meet to discuss topics of current interest. Earlier this spring, Steckbeck led a team of students to participate at Stetson University’s Templeton Ethics Competition in our first endeavor with this competition. His fellow faculty and staff can count on his involvement as well as his interest, humor and encouragement. DR. KEVIN O’MARA

SCHOOL OF LAW

Kevin P. Lee

Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching

A

ssociate Professor Kevin P. Lee joined the Campbell faculty in 2007. He regularly teaches our required Business Organizations course to many upperlevel students, and he consistently teaches one of his jurisprudence offerings (satisfying another course requirement). Lee is quite versatile in what he can teach, and his list of courses taught in recent years is long and impressive: Business Organizations, Comparative Law: Japan, Constitutional Law II, International Business Transactions, International Trade Law, Introduction to Legal Theory: Ancient to Modern, Predictive Analysis and the Future of Law, Public International Law, Religion and the First Amendment, and Twentieth Century Legal Theory. Additionally, he often works one-onone with one or more students each semester on “independent study” projects. Lee enjoys an enviable reputation among our students for his passion, stimulating class discussions, and genuine interest in their lives. He is also is a productive scholar, with several published works to his name. And he takes an active role in law school governance. Lee received his B.A. and M.A. degrees (the latter cum laude) in Philosophy and Religion from Colgate University. He earned an M.A. degree (Religious Studies) at The University of Chicago. He earned his law degree (cum laude) from New York Law School. Campbell Law School takes enormous pride in recognizing Lee for his excellence in the classroom and scholarly accomplishments. J. SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

Dr. Connie Chester Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching

C

onnie Chester came to Campbell University in 2004 as a member of the Family and Consumer Sciences Department in the School of Education and was tasked with developing the Birth to Kindergarten teacher licensure program. When the Family and Consumer Sciences department was phased out, the Birth to Kindergarten program became part of Professional Education and Chester became a very valued member of the Professional Education faculty. The Birth to Kindergarten program has established itself as a strong program preparing teachers to work with young children with and without disabilities and their families in a variety of settings. Chester is very involved in local schools and community agencies that support young children such as Harnett County Partnership for Children, Angier Migrant Head Start and Harnett County lnteragency Council. The professional involvement modeled by her demonstrates for our students the importance of being involved in the profession and becoming a teacher leader. Students and faculty appreciate Chester’s quiet demeanor and easy going personality. She is always willing to take on a challenge whether working with students or colleagues and always works to assure that students receive what they need to be the best teachers they can be. During the past accreditation cycle, Chester took the lead in addressing the most challenging standard and did an outstanding job of collaborating with faculty to successfully meet the requirements of the standard. Currently she is taking the lead in working with students and faculty to implement a new state portfolio requirement for student teachers.

ARIANE SMITH MATTHEW 12:46-50 AND MARK 3:31-35: JESUS’ REDEFINITION OF FAMILY

TYLER JACKSON KENNY LOWE

16 undergraduate college students were presented with 20 slides and given a search task while their eye movements and brain waves were recorded.

In Matthew 12:46-50 and Mark 3:31-35, Jesus teaches that a Christian’s loyalty must first be to the family of God rather than the biological family. A Christian may have to abandon his or her earthly family in order to follow Christ; however, Christ in turn provides him or her with a new, spiritual family of believers of which God is the Father. While aiding biological families in their relationships with one another has great significance, ministers must not forget the significance of growing and strengthening the family of God. •

While the Trinity’s perichoretic and processional relationships cast a theological vision of the Church as a Trinitarian community, they fail to account for the concrete and embodied essence of its nature and mission as the Body of Christ. As a corrective, Christology must replace the Trinity as the foundation for ecclesiology. This is because the Church finds its ontological essence in Christology. Essentially, this paper attempts to redeem the Church and Trinity from the sociological projections of contemporary theologians. •

ASHLIE MCCRAE OCTOBER 17 SUITE MOVEMENT 2: STORM OF UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS

The suite was written throughout my sophomore and junior years, in response to the first aniversary of the day one of my professors prayed for me. That day was so significant because it ultimately helped in my decision to stay here at Campbell. But because the first aniversary did not go well, I became depressed. This movement in particular is the most tense out of all three movements as it depicts an oncoming storm. There are four distinct themes: the first of which is the impending storm, a slow theme that gradually becomes louder in dynamic. The second is the rain and thunder, which speeds up considerably. The third is a slow theme of mourning for the day. Lastly you will hear a fourth theme, which is taken straight out of the third movement. •

LAY THIS BODY DOWN

This piece’s original inspiration was to be used for a bar scene in a comedic Youtube series. Throughout writing the tune, I would picture the scene: a room of older men who routinely visit there to escape their home lives and troubling pasts, drinking and talking of their miseries. A young man would walk in and ask why they’re so glum. Then, for it to be followed up by the immediate juxtaposition of them singing their sorrows to a fast-paced and catchy tune, with intricate harmonies. It was to serve as an odd moment of comedic relief to such a broken, depressing scene. The Youtube project was scrapped, but the tune remained in my head, and I set it to a 4-hand piano and small vocal ensemble arrangement.

Ascorbic acid has been shown to cause cancer cell killing possibly via an oxidative stress mechanism.
