Campbell Accolades - 1

From the Provost The coming 2016-2017 academic year promises to be special in many ways. We will launch a new school of engineering, matriculate nursing students for the first time, graduate our first doctors of physical therapy and graduate our first doctors of osteopathic medicine. Amidst all of the great academic planning and work that has laid the solid foundation for these historic firsts, Campbell faculty have been working diligently in the library, in the laboratory, in the field, in clinical settings, in the community and around the world to constantly develop and refine themselves as scholars and professionals. What is their pursuit and purpose? Through all of these activities, Campbell faculty strive to enrich their teaching and to exemplify the university’s mission. I am pleased to introduce you to the 2016 Accolades publication. For over a decade, we have proudly enjoyed reading about the tremendous scholarly and professional activities of the faculty of Campbell University. This publication serves as a convenient means to collect, consolidate and communicate broadly the accomplishments of our faculty. Successes as editors, grant writers, researchers and presenters are included. Also highlighted are faculty who have been selected by their dean or faculty peers and recognized for outstanding accomplishments in research or teaching. You will quickly have a deep appreciation of the myriad of disciplines from the academy represented at Campbell and the meaningful work being done by our faculty as evidenced by this fine publication. As wonderful as Accolades has been, over the last few years I have felt that something was missing. To this end, I am overjoyed to announce that undergraduate, graduate and professional student research achievements will now be included as we document and celebrate the scholarly and professional accomplishments of Campbell University. Campbell students are demonstrating increasing success as scholars and researchers, and I am very proud to include visible outcomes from the most important constituency of the University. Congratulations to all on another incredibly productive year.

Best,

Dr. Mark L. Hammond Provost, Vice President for Academic Affairs Professor of Biology

E. BERT WALLACE

THEATRE ARTS PROFESSOR PAYS HOMAGE TO HARNETT COUNTY’S MOST FAMOUS SON, PLAYWRIGHT PAUL GREEN

E

. Bert Wallace feels a connection with Paul Green, and not just because the two share a profession as playwrights.

Their real connection is Campbell University. Wallace, the associate professor of theatre for the College of Arts & Sciences, works on the campus where 100 years prior (when it was Buies Creek Academy), Green attended classes, led the debate team and Philologian Society, pitched for the baseball team and ran track and wrote for the Pine Burr yearbook. Wallace’s office and the stage where his students have performed (many of those plays his own) isn’t far from where the Paul Green Outdoor Theatre once stood. “Paul Green would have known the schoolmaster, the founder, J.A. Campbell very well,” says Wallace. “He was very much a part of the community here, even after his fame.” In 2012, Campbell University collaborated with the Harnett County Library and the Chapel Hillbased Paul Green Foundation to host a two-day Paul Green Festival, an event that featured scenes from his dramas — including the nation’s secondlong running outdoor drama, Lost Colony, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama In Abraham’s Bosom — costumes, music, the showing of the 1934 film “Carolina” based on Green’s play The House of Connelly, lectures and stories, baseball games and more. Part of the festival was a reading of one of Green’s two novels — an important book to many North Carolina historians. This Body The Earth, published in 1935, chronicled the dreams and ambitions, the burdens and the struggles of a poor white tenant farmer named Alvin Barnes in the early 1900s. In the book, Barnes is portrayed as a man who refuses to accept his “lower” lot in life and — progressively at the time — believes black people in his community deserve better lives as well. The novel is a tragedy — Wallace calls it Grapes of Wrath, but based in North Carolina — but it’s also an unflinching, true-to-life look at the struggles white and black families endured in the rural South

in the decades following the Civil War. Wallace’s wife, Kelley, picked up a copy of the book at the festival and began reading it at home. Before long, she was telling her husband how good it was. “She kept telling me it would be a really interesting thing to adapt for the stage,” he recalls. “Eventually, I read it and said, ‘Yes. We have to do this.’” Wallace traveled all over Harnett County — farm houses, old churches, tobacco and cotton fields and even the old cabin where Green wrote most of his later works. Visiting these places gave Wallace a feel for Green’s childhood and the experiences that shaped his writing and much of the story of This Body The Earth. “This Body The Earth is clearly based on this environment,” Wallace said. “I didn’t want to take on a project like this without immersing myself in the environment. It was very inspiring to do that.” Two years after taking on the project, Wallace’s stage adaptation of This Body The Earth — performed by his students in the Department of Theatre Arts — went live for four performances in mid April. For the students, it was more than just the experience and the education that comes with putting on a big production … it was a history lesson on their state, their region and even their school. Before rehearsals began, Wallace took many of his cast and crew to the same churches, graveyards and farms he visited while working on the adaptation to help them get in character or get setting ideas. “They learned this wasn’t just some play based on an old book written by an old guy,” Wallace said. “They saw where this all happened. It gave them a sense of importance, that this is significant to our local history. I think they all — even the ones who aren’t from here — felt a connection to the rural South. I was happy to expose that to them.”

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF LAW NORMAN A. WIGGINS SCHOOL OF LAW Lucas Osborn is an expert in the area of intellectual property law, with a focus on patent law. His most recent works explore three-dimensional printing technology and how it will affect the law, particularly intellectual property law. Because of the cutting edge nature of the new technology, Osborn has authored more than half a dozen recent articles on the subject, presented his research more than 20 times across the nation (as well as Canada and China) and has been quoted in recent stories from the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg News and several local and regional publications. He currently has a book contract with Cambridge University Press. A graduate of Harvard Law School, Osborn joined the Campbell Law faculty in 2009, and he now serves as the director of Campbell Law School’s Intellectual Property Law program. Before coming to Campbell, he clerked for the Honorable Kenneth M. Hoyt on the U.S. District Court for the Southern district of Texas and served as an attorney in the intellectual property section of Fulbright & Jaworski in Houston (now Norton Rose Fulbright). At Fulbright, his practice focused on patent litigation, patent prosecution and intellectual property licensing. He is also licensed to practice in front of the U.S. Patent and Trademark office. Osborn’s past work has looked at patent infringement for making an “offer to sell” an infringing device, the doctrine of patentable subject matter and the Federal Circuit’s jurisprudence. Dr. Charlotte Paolini CHAIR OF FAMILY MEDICINE SCHOOL OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE

Since helping launch Campbell’s School of Osteopathic Medicine in 2013, Dr. Charlotte Paolini has invested herself deeply in the lives of her students. As faculty advisor for the student’s Christian Medical and Dental Association and the Family Medicine Club, she has co-led four medical missions to Honduras and Haiti. In addition to teaching, chairing the department and serving as a physician in the Campbell University Health Center, she oversees the student-run, grant-funded Campbell University Community Care Clinic, serving patients without insurance. From one student testimony: “Regardless of the number of patients she has seen that day, the number of hours she’s worked, or the number of lectures she has to give the following day, she has always made herself available for review sessions, mentoring sessions or any time students need a little extra.” A native of Biddeford, Maine and graduate of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, Paolini was on faculty at her alma mater before joining Campbell’s faculty. She is board certified in family practice and holds a Certificate of Added Qualifications in geriatrics. She is also on the Christian Medical and Dental Associations Board of Trustees and serves on the CMDA Human Trafficking Commission.

She joined the faculty of the College of Arts & Sciences as an assistant professor in 1999 and was awarded the rank of associate professor in 2006. Stanke and her family reside in Wake County, where she attends St. Bernadette Catholic Church and is an avid supporter of various animal rescue organizations. Stanke is a Cold War history scholar who actively engages with international colleagues on a regular basis, often travelling to the Ukraine to present papers. The chair of her department, James Martin, said, “One cannot overemphasize the importance of Dr. Stanke’s research and travel. The legacy of the Cold War continues to pervade the world stage, and Dr. Stanke’s cooperative projects with her Ukrainian colleagues have opened doors for further interaction between Campbell and the former Soviet bloc.” Recently Stanke has turned her attention to the Chernobyl nuclear disaster of 1986. She has even visited the disaster site. Her most recent paper, titled “The Depiction of Chernobyl in American Political Cartoons,” helps contrast America’s perceptions of the disaster to those of Ukraine. Stanke is a well-respected scholar in her field. She represents the finest example of an Arts & Sciences faculty member. — Michael B. Wells, Dean

DEAN’S AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING

He insists that students own their learning and that they move from classroom learning to practical application. This application in turn reinforces and broadens their learning. He goes the extra mile with students, supporting them both professionally and personally. Abbey is a team player, an eager volunteer, a friendly colleague and a great representative of the Business School. He is the embodiment of the business school’s motto: Innovation with Vision. Abbey has spurred student learning through innovation in his classes, connecting students with unique community projects, giving students a voice and encouraging them to think critically. He has organized a number of events including panels on politics, reducing racial and ethnic prejudice, local economic development and health care innovation. Prior to his time at Campbell, Abbey served his country in the United States Marine Corp and the U.S. Army. He earned a bachelor’s degree and MBA from Fayetteville State University (both summa cum laude), a law degree with a concentration in business law from Campbell University (cum laude) and a Ph.D. in Business Administration from Old Dominion University. — Edward Fubara, Interim Dean

Katherine Van Allen

DEAN’S AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING Katie Van Allen came to Campbell University in 2011, a recent graduate of the University of Maryland. Katie was described by the chair of her Ph.D. committee as a “highly creative, motivated and proficient researcher and teacher.” I have found his comments to be very true over the past five years. Katie has certainly proven herself as an excellent teacher and colleague. Dr. Van Allen serves as the Psychology Department liaison with Adult and Online Education, teaching on main campus, extended campus, and online. She has done an outstanding job of working with her colleagues to assure that students in all venues receive an equivalent educational experience. Students appreciate Dr. Van Allen’s willingness to help them work through their daily dilemmas as they move through their program. Her warm smile and cheerful personality make her very approachable to students whether they are traditional undergraduates or adult learners. Dr. Van Allen received her Ph.D. and M.A. in psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park and her B.S. in Psychology from George Mason University. Bonnie Brenseke

DEAN’S AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING Dr. Bonnie Brenseke joined the School of Osteopathic Medicine as assistant professor and chair of biomedical pathology in February 2013. In addition to earning a bachelor’s degree from N.C. State University, Brenseke earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the N.C. State College of Veterinary Medicine and completed an anatomic pathology residency at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Virginia Tech. Prior to arriving at Campbell, Brenseke served as chief pathology resident, performing diagnostic services for the hospital, and earned a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech with her research that explored the relationship between maternal nutrition, fetal health and the development of chronic diseases. Brenseke has presented at several professional meetings and has published in multiple peer-reviewed journals. Her research and professional interests include nutrition, maternal-fetal health, chronic disease prevention, toxicologic pathology and teaching. She tirelessly supports student research and her colleagues as chair of the faculty senate at the med school. She founded the Collaborative Anatomy-Pathology Project in answer to student interest in the disease states encountered during first year gross anatomy. With the primary objective of encouraging students to integrate the clinical and basic sciences, CAP Project participants develop case studies based on gross and microscopic findings and emphasize the clinical implications of the disease. In addition, the project fostered interdisciplinary collaboration and taught valuable research, presentation and design skills to over forty-five students who have participated over the past two years. — Dr. John Kauffman, Dean and Chief Academic Officer

Michelle Green

DEAN’S AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING Michelle Green received her bachelor’s degree in clinical sciences and master’s in physical therapy from Ithaca College in 1994 and 1995, respectively. She also earned a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2015 and earned her neurospecialist certification through the American Physical Therapy Association in 2015. After joining the Campbell faculty in 2014, Green was instrumental in developing an integrated and sequenced thread related to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health model and the neurorehabilitation courses within the curriculum. Additionally, Green developed, coordinated and delivered a two-day seating and positioning summit integrated with a DPT program course that introduced students to practicing professionals and vendors that provide equipment to meet the needs of future patients. The course was a huge success with positive feedback from all participants. Green was a significant contributor to the successful integration of Objective Structured Clinical Examinations and simulated patients into the curriculum development process.

Michael B. Kent

DEAN’S AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH Campbell Law School takes enormous pride in recognizing associate professor Michael B. Kent Jr. for his accomplishments and his excellence in the classroom. In his article, “Viewing the Supreme Court’s Exactions Cases Through the Prism of AnliEvasion,” Kent contends that while the 2013 United States Supreme Court decision in Koontz v. St. Johns River Water Management District “might be viewed as just another in a long line of cases that make up the messy jurisprudence of regulatory takings and unconstitutional conditions,” the 5-4 decision “in fact provides a key to unlocking the Court’s exactions framework.” Kent relies on his previous co-authored scholarship to contend “that both regulatory takings and the doctrine of unconstitutional conditions constitute anti-evasion doctrines by which the Court seeks to fill enforcement gaps left open by its prior constitutional decision rules.” He earned his political science and history degree at the University of Alabama (Phi Beta Kappa) and his law degree at the University of Georgia (Order of the Coif). Following law school he served as a judicial clerk for federal district judge J. Owen Forrester (Northern District of Georgia) and for federal appellate judge Emmett Ripley Cox (Eleventh Circuit). He practiced law in Georgia for several years before joining the faculty of Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School, where he received tenure. Kent joined Campbell’s law faculty in 2013. He teaches the first-year property course, as well as environmental law, land use regulation, local government law and wills and trusts. — J. Rich Leonard, Dean

Adult & Online Education

Trey Asbury

DEAN’S AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING At its best, adult education blends theory, research, reflection, discussion and practical application. Faculty who bring exemplary academic credentials and formidable professional experience in the field of study to the classroom are lauded by their students. One in whom academic preparation and career path meld to yield an outstanding adult educator is Trey Asbury. An undergraduate alumnus of the University of Tennessee, Asbury earned his Ph.D. from Texas Christian University. In addition to teaching, Asbury has worked as a family therapist and a research analyst for a large urban school district. His research interests center around family systems and cyber-psychology (the study of technology and behavior). His most recent publication is a chapter in the textbook, Applied CyberPsychology. He also collaborates with a research group in Wolverhampton, England for cross-cultural explorations of online behavior. In 2001, Dr. Asbury began employment with Campbell teaching on the main campus, Camp Lejeune, Fort Bragg and online. Six years later, the Asbury family relocated to Texas; however, Asbury continues to teach for Campbell University Online. His typical course rotation includes learning and cognition, clinical psychology and physiological psychology. Dr. Asbury and his wife, Tammy, a teen pregnancy counselor for the Fort Worth Texas Independent School District, have two teenage boys, Elijah and Luke. — John Roberson, Dean

Larry Dickens

DEAN’S AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING Larry Glenn Dickens, the Gay and Haskell Duncan Chair of Church Music and associate professor of church music and worship, began his teaching career at Campbell in 2006 as an adjunct professor of church music and worship. In 2013, Dickens was welcomed as the first Duncan Chair of Church Music Even before he joined the full-time faculty, Dickens was already instrumental in the establishment and promotion of a new church music program at the Divinity School. Rather than an academy focused on music performance, Dickens’ vision has been focused on a high-quality concentration in music and worship, equipping students not simply as musicians but as music ministers. Since he has come to Campbell, Dickens has initiated a number of significant programs, including the annual Oasis Music and Worship Conference, the Segue Youth Ministry Conference and the Overture Music Conference. In the past two years, he has taken a festival choir composed of Campbell students and members from a variety of church choirs to perform at several highprofile national venues. Above all, the impact of Dr. Dickens’ work is evident in the rapidly growing number of students who are coming to Campbell Divinity School to be trained and equipped for ministry through music and worship. The growth and strength of the music program is frequently noted by persons who come to a Divinity School event. More importantly, local churches are benefitting from the service of these students.

KEIR MORTON-MANLEY

STUDENT’S STUDY ON GENDER, BATHROOMS AND THE LAW COINCIDES WITH GROWING NATIONAL DEBATE Long before House Bill 2 had North Carolina and the nation in a heated debate on gender identity and bathrooms, Keir Morton-Manley was asking questions. Watching the popular TLC series “I Am Jazz” — about a transgender teen and the perils of high school — Morton-Manley and her husband began to think about their daughters. What would happen if a teen like Jazz (born a male, identifies as a female) enrolled into the all-female public school in Wake County their daughters — ages 14 and 12 — currently attend? How would she be treated? How would the school accommodate her? Where would she change for gym class? Which bathroom would she feel more comfortable using? Like any curious second-year law student — especially one taking a course on public school law litigation — Morton-Manley also wondered about this hypothetical student’s rights. Would this student be protected under Title IX laws, which protect all students from genderbased discrimination? “I didn’t have the answers,” she says. “I was looking for research topics for school, and my question was simply would this student have protections under the law in a K-12 setting? This was before House Bill 2 and before all the Kaitlin Jenner news coverage. Everybody wasn’t talking about this.” With the guidance of Campbell Law associate professor Lisa Lukasik, Morton-Manley’s kitchen table discussion with her husband became an award-winning research project. “Transgender Students and Access to GenderIdentified Bathrooms” was one of three winning oral presentations from graduate students at the annual Academic Symposium hosted by Wiggins Memorial Library this spring. In her research, Morton-Manley found that while federal Title IX laws prohibit discrimination in schools based on gender, they do allow for some sex segregation. In particular, while sex discrimination generally remains illegal, sex-segregated bathrooms are permissible. This creates a blurred line when it comes to transgender students. What does the word “sex” mean in this context? Should the segregation be based on biological sex or the sex that student identifies with? The line became more blurred in March, several months after Morton-Manley began her research and just one day after her presentation was awarded at Campbell’s

Academic Symposium. On March 23, North Carolina’s General Assembly passed House Bill 2, dubbed the Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act, which overturned a Charlotte city ordinance that extended some rights to people who are gay or transgender and made it illegal for cities to expand upon the state’s discrimination laws. One of those rights in the Charlotte ordinance protected transgender people who chose to use public restrooms based on the gender they identify with. The law (or perceptions of the law) on this subject is ever-changing, and Morton-Manley’s research has taken on a new air of importance and relevance. Lukasik, a seasoned litigator with over a decade of experience representing local boards of education, said the issue has come up before in her public school litigation course and pointed to a recent policy change in Cumberland County Schools after a first-grade student born a boy began to identify as a girl. Lukasik said with respect to Morton-Manley’s research, she has served as a guide — there for her to offer perspective and point her toward cases that will help develop her ideas. “One of the great privileges of teaching at Campbell Law School is that we have exceptionally talented, creative students who invest and manage their projects with such sophistication. My role is simply adding my experience,” Lukasik says. “Keir is an incredibly talented soon-to-be lawyer, and it’s my job to let her shine. And as you can see, she shines.” True to the mission of the law school, Morton-Manley has grown from student to advocate in the course of her project. She was an active member of her daughters’ school’s PTA, and originally, her research set out to find answers from the school’s perspective. As she delved deeper into the research, she began to learn more about the psychological issues facing transgender children or children with gender identity questions. “They may represent a small percentage of the population, but their issues are quite unique,” she says. “The data shows these children have high rates of depression and suicide. And when you’re in a middle school or high school setting — which is tough for anyone — it’s a more difficult experience. I, personally, have a strong compassion for these children. I’m now coming from a place of respect, inclusion and compassion for these people who are just trying to live their lives, whatever way they want to live them.”
