WALKING ON THE WATER

THE CAMPER TEAM

The first Whitbread Round the World Race was conceived over a pint of beer nearly 40 years ago by Colonel Bill Whitbread and Admiral Otto Steiner of the Royal Naval Sailing Association. It started in September 1973 in yachts that were little different from those cruising around the Mediterranean at that time. Since then, the ocean racing yacht has developed into a high-tech state-of-the-art speed machine, with little comfort spared for the crew apart from the addition of leading-edge technology. In the past, skippers and navigators had little idea of where their rivals might be as they ploughed day in day out through the vast oceans. During the first race, communication between the fleet and organisers was based on a weekly position report to a local coast guard, but from 1993–94, satellite equipment enabled the yachts to file their position every six hours. This has increased to the Race HQ being able to track the boats 24 hours a day anywhere in the world. The history and the authenticity of the race, the human adventure, the effort, the desire to improve and the teamwork fully fit Camper’s values. The Mediterranean as a territory and as a culture has always been at the centre of the Camper image. From Alicante, this round-the-world race will be, without a doubt, a strong source of inspiration for the future of a brand that walks with imagination. Competing in the Volvo Ocean Race 2011–12 motivates Camper to continue innovating its products and strengthening its partnerships and presence around the world. Camper is taking its first steps in the Volvo Ocean Race together with Emirates Team New Zealand, undoubtedly one of the most prestigious professional sailing teams in the world. Despite New Zealand being in the antipodes of Mallorca, both companies bring the same objectives and vision to the project: to aim to win the Volvo Ocean Race.

Collectively the Camper team, which is being run by Emirates Team New Zealand, brings a wealth of experience to the race. Team members have between them no less than three Olympic campaigns, 17 America’s Cups, 22 Volvo/Whitbread races and numerous world championship titles. EMIRATES TEAM NEW ZEALAND Emirates Team New Zealand is one of the most successful sailing teams in the world. The team became a household name in their home country following their consecutive wins in the America’s Cup in 1995 and 2000. They became the first team from a country outside the United States to successfully win and then defend the America’s Cup. Their success has contributed to New Zealand’s reputation for producing world-class sailors and boat designers. Since winning the Louis Vuitton Challenger series in 2007, the team has gone on to win consecutive championships during the TP52 Audi Med Cup circuit (2009/2010). They dominated the Louis Vuitton Trophy regattas in 2009/2010 winning four out of five events. In April 2011 the team announced their participation in the 34th edition of the America’s Cup.

EL EQUIPO CAMPER

GEHEN AUF DEM WASSER

America’s Cup bekannt.

CAMMINARE SULL’ACQUA

CAMPER TEAM

The Volvo Open 70 (sometimes referred to as a Volvo 70 or VO 70) is the current class of racing yachts designed for the Volvo Ocean Race. It has a canting keel, which is a keel that can be swung up to an angle of 40 degrees to counteract the heeling force of the wind. The boats are also incredibly light (as they are made from carbon fibre) and have been stripped down to the bare minimum that the crew need in order to sail as fast as possible. The Volvo Open 70 is essentially a 70 foot monohull (single hull) racing boat. This new design was originally introduced for the 2005–06 edition of the race (a change from the previous 60 foot design). However, after two races it was clear that improvements could still be made both in safety and speed as well as levelling the playing field.

11

NAVIGATOR

SHORE TEAM

A crew is made up of 11 people. Each crew member has a specific role on board the boat, as well as doubling up as sailmakers, engineers and medics. The roles on board a VO 70 are:

They are responsible for ensuring that the boat is sailing at its top speed in all conditions. They must have a good feel for the water, the wind and boat speed, and be able to communicate and work closely with the watch caption, skipper and navigator. The driver “drives” the boat, while the trimmer controls the sails.

Responsible for choosing the quickest possible route for the boat whilst racing, they must take into account weather systems, sea state, and tactics on the racecourse. All the teams receive weather data from the Race HQ at the same time, they are not allowed to consult any other sources for additional weather information during racing, but they can work with a weather team while onshore to plan for the next leg.

As well as a crew of sailors, the Camper Volvo Open 70 has a dedicated on-shore team of engineers, sailmakers, boat builders and meteorologists making the journey around the world. The members of the shore team are:

The ‘managing director’ of the crew and one of the key decision makers on performance and strategy for the team. In order to get the very best from both the crew and the boat, communication skills are crucial as well as an understanding of all aspects of the boat, the race and the roles onboard.

WATCH CAPTAIN The crew splits into two groups or ‘watches’, with a watch captain who leads and directs the crew on watch with him. The watch captain consults with the navigator throughout the watch in order to decide any course changes or tactical decisions. He will also make decisions about which sails to use in order to maximize speed and performance.

PITMAN The pitman, as the name suggests, is found in the pit (lower deck) of the boat, this is the section that controls the sails. Their role is crucial as they are often the link between the other areas of the boat, working in combination with the bowman, trimmers and drivers.

BOWMAN The bowman can be found at the front (bow) of the boat and has one of the most full-on positions onboard. It is an all action role, which involves hoisting, dropping and controlling the sails and means that they need to be agile, strong, have the ability to think on their feet and react quickly.

MEDIA CREW MEMBER The boat’s onboard journalist who is not allowed to help sail the boat but can cook and clean for the crew. His main role is to cover the race on a daily basis through written dailies, video and photographs.
