2020-2022 Annual Report (two-year edition)

On 615 acres of wooded hills, gardens, and pastures in rural upstate New York, adults with special needs and long- and short-term service volunteers live and work together as equals in extended family homes throughout Camphill Village.

Like a monarch butterfly embarking on a fathomless journey, this resilient community relied upon innumerable factors and blessings that led us to a safe landing in 2022. We are grateful to our friends, community members, and donors who guided us through an unpredictable time.

The pages within detail two very different periods here in Copake: the months of great uncertainty, swift action, and careful planning that defined our 2020-2021 year; and the return to regular gatherings, meaningful work, and joyful celebration that shaped this community in 2021-2022. These years may feel far apart, but they are hemispheres that compose a precious, memorable era in Camphill Village’s ongoing history.

Camphill Village and the Camphill Movement are the very embodiments of progress. At a time when the world was so deleteriously behind in its ability to provide proper services for individuals with developmental disabilities, these wonderful communities were sprouting up all over the globe, like runners spreading from the heart of where it all began – a place of love born of tragedy.

The Jewish refugees who established the first Camphill community in 1940 Aberdeen were uncertain of so many things at the time, particularly how they would continue to care for the children on the Camphill Estate once they began to enter adulthood. All over the world, Camphill communities now serve children, teens, adults, and elders of many abilities. To begin one of these precious communities, the founders must recognize a need, they must have support, and they must press on. When you combine these industrious attitudes with the kind of support we have been blessed with in Copake, so many wonderful things become possible. And after this community celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2021, it continues to progress – in scope, in creativity, and in support.

You might remember the historic timeline we published in the 60th anniversary edition of our newsletter, which detailed a period of rapid growth here on Sunny Valley Farm –with households built to accommodate more community members, and workspaces created to support a rich therapeutic and cultural life. It simply would not have been possible without the financial support we received from families and friends.

And now, after these two remarkable years when we learned so much more about fragility and stability than any other time in recent memory, we are grateful to weather this storm together – with our extended families and community members by our side here in the Village and our friends and supporters by our side in spirit.

The Camphill Movement began at the Kirkton House on an estate in Aberdeenshire, which was so generously offered to Karl Koenig, the founder of the Camphill Movement, by the Houghton family. In December 1939, Dr. Koenig, wrote in a letter to those who would join him on the estate along with a plan for “fifteen to twenty” children with disabilities: “We are permitted to look back with gratitude upon a destiny which has guided us with so much blessing. We look forward with joy to the work we want to accomplish.”

Camphill Village remains a comforting presence for the families of our community members and a beacon of hope for those who have yet to discover this special place. We intend to continue to seek inspiration from the founders and supporters of the Camphill Movement, and identify spaces where we can spread our light from this candle on the hill.

2020-2022 Camphill Village Board of Directors

The last two years have certainly challenged this community to be creative. In March 2020, we had just sent out the invitations to a fun spring event here in the Village. Hours later, we would find this community undergoing rigorous planning and adjustments to stay protected for what would be an unknown period of time.

The resilience of this community and the swift action that so many took cannot be overstated. Some attached wooden signs to saw horses at the entryway of Camphill Village, alerting visitors to turn around, and imploring those who enter to “keep Camphill Village safe.” They were a constant reminder of just how precious this community is, and frankly, how physically delicate some of our community members are.

Our households learned creative ways to keep everyone occupied when our social interactions had to be limited per government instruction. And our farmers and bakers continued to do the essential work we rely upon in order to feed our shared community.

Our dedicated Quality Improvement department stayed updated to the minute on trends of infection in the area, masking requirements, and eventually, locally available tests and vaccines. Our medical staff were considered essential workers, and ensured that our community received the care it was accustomed to. Our finance department pursued government loans to protect our residents and employees and their families from the financial impacts of COVID-19, which included a 20-percent decrease in funding from the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities that lasted the better part of a year.

Our loving donors made it possible for Camphill Village to continue to meet the needs of our community by funding a small fleet of RV campers for incoming American volunteers to isolate in after our international volunteers were suddenly forced to return home. We have made heavy use of these campers throughout the pandemic, and we continue to use them as

quarantine spaces for volunteers. What’s more, donors also funded the purchase of 12 hospital beds and privacy screens that replaced the looms in our Weavery, which was transformed into a medical unit in case we needed it.

Thankfully, it was only used as a quarantine space, and as of January 2022, we are weaving once again.

And as I write this letter, I am reminded of the sweet moments that occurred here these last two years at a time of so much uncertainty, and the ways we galvanized and grew closer with one another. There was a quiet wedding here between two farmers in the cow pasture with our dairy herd serving witness. And then another wedding. Eight beautiful children have been born in Camphill Village since the beginning of this pandemic, gracing our hearts and households, and reminding us of renewal and hope.

We have now welcomed some new community members here after closing down tours and admissions for so long, and we are delighted to once again welcome family members to the Village for the first in-person Brothers & Sisters Day in quite some time. We were also able to fully celebrate 60 years as a community in September.

And as we continue to plan our weeks, months, and year with cautious optimism, Camphill Village is fortunate for the community members, friends, and donors who helped us adapt during such a strange time in our young history. We are thankful for each and every one of you.
