EDITORS’S LETTER

WELCOME! W

e are excited to announce that the CampNavigator’s debut edition, released in spring, is a huge success! We have received a tremendous amount of positive feedback on it. We want to thank the contributors, advertisers, and readers for making the CampNavigator Magazine a success. At CampNavigator, we are focused on and committed to empowering parents with accurate information to make informed decisions about summer camp. Camp experience is an accumulation of experiences that build the foundation for personal and professional development, making it quite a unique learning environment. Our CampNavigator Magazine shares knowledge to enrich the lives of children, youth and adults through the camp experience. Summer is finally here, and many of us are looking forward to the start of Summer Camp. We are busy packing our Camp supplies, getting prepared for Camp, and full of anticipation for what the Summer holds. During this busy time, it’s important to remember Camper safety, specifically water safety. Many Camps have water activities and our little campers need to understand the importance of water safety prior to attending Camp. In this edition we emphasize Camper Safety and showcase several high quality Summer Camps. These camps discuss the value and discipline Acting Camp provides, the benefits of Camp, how Basketball Camp can develop permanent confidence, and many more important topics. We hope you enjoy the Summer edition of the CampNavigator Magazine!

A Safe Camper is a Happy Camper

S

ummer time means camp for more than 11 million children each year. These experiences, whether at day- or sleepaway camp, can help children build social skills, self-confidence and selfesteem. One of the best things parents can do is let their child learn to be more independent, and camp can be great for your child’s development. But, like so much in parenting, we want to do everything we can to keep our children safe, even when they are away from us. As a mother of three, I know very well what it is like to send your children off to camp and worry about their safety. As the President and CEO of Safe Kids Worldwide, I spend my time working to help prevent all kinds of injuries among children the world over. Safe Kids offers a variety of injury prevention safety tips for parents and caregivers, including some that are very relevant to the camp environment, such as how to keep kids safe around water and when they are playing a sport. Here are some simple steps you can take to prepare your child for a safe camp experience: Share medical and emergency contact information. Camps should have accurate medical information and contact information in the event of an emergency. Parents can do their part by ensuring counselors know if their child has any special medical conditions, like asthma, that requires special attention. Teach your child to be safe around water. Lots of camps have pools or open water, and it’s a good idea for children to be prepared for swimming and boating well before camp begins. As a mom, I knew how important it was to enroll my children in swimming lessons to make sure they knew how to tread water and float. Children who will be swimming in open water should know that it can be very different than swimming in a pool, and no matter where they swim, they should know to never, ever swim alone. It is also important to check if the camp has designated lifeguards on duty while kids are swimming. Safe Kids’ water safety guide offers more tips on keeping kids safe in and around water. Help your child remember to stay hydrated. Whether they are at a sports camp or simply playing games at camp, kids often forget to stop

for a drink of water when they are active. Hydration is critical, especially during hot summer days. Did you know that children could become dehydrated before symptoms even start to appear? Parents and counselors should encourage children to drink water frequently and not wait until they are thirsty. Our sports safety guide offers checklists and other helpful tips on keeping kids active, healthy and safe on and off the playing field. Know the signs of concussion. Children can sustain head injuries from a fall, a collision with another child, or from bumping their head on the bottom of the pool or the side of a dock. Do you and your child’s counselors know the signs and symptoms of a concussion? About 90 percent of concussions occur without the loss of consciousness, so you may want to find out if camp counselors are aware of the signs and symptoms of concussions. Learn more from Safe Kids’ concussion guide for parents, and consider sharing our concussion guide for coaches with your child’s counselors. Camp can and should be a fun experience for children and parents, so I hope these ideas will help you prepare your child for a safe summer at camp and elsewhere. For more ideas for keeping your kids safe throughout the year, you can view our checklist in this issue of Camp Navigator and visit www.safekids.org.

Safe Kids Worldwide is a global network of

organizations dedicated to providing parents and caregivers proven and practical resources to protect kids from unintentional injuries, the number one cause of death to children ages in the United States. Throughout the world, almost a million children die of an injury each year, and every one of these tragedies is preventable. Through innovative research, education and advocacy, Safe Kids works with an extensive network of more than 600 coalitions and chapters in the U.S. and in 22 countries to reduce traffic injuries, falls, burns, poisonings, drownings and more. Since 1987, Safe Kids has helped reduce the U.S. childhood death rate from unintentional injury by 53 percent. Join our effort at www.safekids.org. www.CampNavigator.com Vol-1; Issue 2

World: How Acting Camp Can Ground Your

Tweeting, Texting Teen/

Tween on

Terra Firma 14

www.CampNavigator.com Vol-1; Issue 2

Like sirens to sailors, the internet beckons to us every second of the day. Here’s a Wikipedia citation you can trust: “since the mid-1990s the Internet has had a drastic impact on culture and commerce…” Drastic, indeed…and coming at you and your family with the force of a tsunami. Open your home page and crises, near and abroad, hover ominously over celebrity fat photos that beg for a peek…or two or three. (Without make-up? Yes, please!) Katy Perry, Kate Middleton, Katniss Everdeen? Hello!…just a click away, and but a fractious sampling of the multiplicity of tentacles that reach through the internet’s ether to grab your attention. Why not just give in? The problem with full out surrender to this dizzying panoply of distraction is that the Internet’s Adventure Land is uncharted terrain resembling both Alice’s Rabbit Hole and Sleeping Beauty’s Maze of Brambles, where neither safe return nor timely awakening are assured nor guaranteed. You, as loving guardian, cannot gift a shield strong enough for your child to withstand the exponentially proliferating onslaught of the internet’s easily accessed Good, Bad, Ugly and Truly Terrifying. You can, however, offer a strong Lifeline to Planet Earth’s physical, present day reality. As an Acting Coach and Theatre Director, I admit my bias, but Acting– particularly Stage Acting–can serve as that Lifeline. Yes, art classes, sports, hiking, pottery or pastry-making are noble pursuits that antidote the tendency for kids to tune out amidst their techno-toys. But, IMAO–and years of experience–a well designed and taught Acting Camp program quickly builds (1) Focus, (2) Discipline, (3) Critical thinking (4) Leadership and (5) Compassion. These are the self same tools your child needs to manage the wonders of, and defend against the dangers of, cyberspace’s ‘brave new world.’

How does a young person benefit from an Acting Camp? Here are some of the benefits we foster and see gloriously manifested every year at The Summer Theatre Camp of Montclair: Focus: While our campsite is clean, beautiful and inviting, our camp program is profound in its simplicity and refreshingly devoid of technological distractions. (I sometimes jokingly refer to The Summer Theatre Camp of Montclair as the “No Bells and Whistles Camp.”) Young people fall in love with the uncluttered clarity of the environment: shiny wood floors, scripts, music and Our Own Wonderful Selves. It’s an exhilarating formula! Less distractions=more opportunity to concentrate. Voila! Our focus is stronger, longer and more consolidated. Discipline: Because our day is built on tasks that are mental and physical, the habituation of these tasks builds strength. When we develop the habit of performing these tasks at the same time each day, with the support of our cast mates and instructors, we become stronger, more competent and, henceforth, more disciplined with each repetition. Critical Thinking: Along with repetition for memorization, acting involves the effort to understand meaning and to convey meaning to our cast mates, director and audience. This is done through asking questions, learning word meanings, reading

vocal, facial and physical cues and discriminating what is of lesser and greater importance in a scene or play. Acting requires us to also know the ‘meaning underneath the meaning‘ or, in theatrical lingo, the sub-text… and sub-text is where Truth lies is all conversation, onstage and off. Critical thinking is an essential life skill professionally, personally and socially. However, the most important aspect of critical thinking is the ability to determine how to spend ones’ time–and life–for its utmost most significance. Leadership: Each day, camp participants arrive, fresh from sleep and dropped off at our campsite, unadorned and simply clad. Throughout the course of the day they work with acting coaches, a yoga coach, a vocal coach, a choreographer, and some great assistants. Through this work, we learn acceptance of each other’s strengths and how to shore up the parts of us that need more strengthening. The problem-solving is rich and of a higher order in Acting Camp

because theatrical process is the meeting of challenges of time, space, budget and personality in the most efficient way possible, This problem-solving, coupled with inspiration, is a formula for confidence and Leadership Compassion (the most notable of our Life Tools): Smart phones, gaming devices, ipads, laptops, etcetera, are left at our stage door. In their absence, the glossy patina of clever-ish snark is replaced by sincere, patient communication. Instead of peering into our phones or computers, we peer into each other’s eyes to discover that we are all pieces of one beautifully fractured pane of glass. And when we choose to gather the shattered pieces and hold them up, we can see through to each other. And wonder of wonders, those same transparent fragments of glass reflect our own identities back to ourselves, piece by lovely piece.

Ann Marie Sunderhaus, director of Hubbard Sports Camp, has 16 years of experience running summer programs. Her passion is seeing campers learn new skills and grow emotionally and physically. There are many benefits to the camp environment for campers. Ann Marie has shared some of her thoughts and advice from past experience.

The Benefits of Camp! is a great opportunity for children to 1 Camp become independent, work with campers in their same age group, make new friends and create great memories.

camp allows campers to enjoy new 2 Summer experiences and adventures while learning new skills one week at a time.

camp allows campers to explore their 3 Summer own independence, challenge themselves

outside of the classroom and become socially comfortable with new people.

camp has staff members who are 4 Summer amazing role models and peers to campers of

all ages. These relationships and friendships are amazing to watch grow throughout the summer.

camp provides a camper a second 5 Summer home, summer friendships, and summer

comfort. Many of our campers return summer after summer wanting to see their “summer friends and staff members.

16

www.CampNavigator.com Vol-1; Issue 2

It is amazing to see how much a camper grows in our environment. They develop confidence, make new friends and learn new skills. I love hearing them beg their parents to ‘stay just a little longer’ at pick up”

Advice to parents

If your child is having a hard time at camp, speak to the camp staff. If they are aware of any concerns there is possibly a quick and simple fix. Every child reacts differently to new environments. Let the staff help your child achieve happiness and laughter at camp. I have a 5, 3 and 1 year old, all of whom show different strengths and weaknesses in different situations. Each child deserves attention and success. Help guide them through the new learning experience so they are able to find the courage to love their new camp selection.

BC Camps, formerly Northwest Basketball Camps, has grown to become the largest and most popular overnight basketball and volleyball program in the world. NBC Camps also provides instruction in soccer and football. Over the last 40 years, we have trained 250,000 athletes. Located in the U.S., Austria, Canada, UK and Italy, NBC Camps is dedicated to elevating personal excellence on and off the court. Our goal is to teach athletes how to compete with confidence, high skill level and intensity. NBC Camps began in 1971 as Northwest Basketball Camp. Founder Fred Crowell thought it a leap of faith to call it “Northwest” Basketball camp as he began the first camp held in Cusick, Washington, with 108 campers. Crowell, at the age of twenty-three became one of the youngest Division 1 coaches in America. Under his coaching, University of Alaska Fairbanks had its first winning season in the history of the college. He left Alaska and joined Campus Crusade for Christ as the first coach for Athletes in Action, a program facing top 20 teams night after

night, sharing a message of community and wholeness, and developing into an exhibition team with one of the most wins in history. Crowell dreamed of a basketball camp that would train athletes to win both on and off the court. He wanted a program that would provide the best basketball training, create an atmosphere of encouragement, hard work, respect and compassion, and teach athletes to compete not only physically but with their hearts and minds. Coach Crowell combined his background of Division 1 coaching with his psychology background as a former family counselor. He wanted to give athletes an edge to physically, mentally and spiritually achieve the disciplined life of excellence. Many told Crowell his idea of combining athletics, faith and values were unrealistic. Now, 40 years later, Crowell’s dream has become reality as his vision has expanded to include multiple sports with over 10,000 athletes competing in NBC Camps programs around the world.

DEVELOP PERMANENT CONFIDENCE THIS SUMMER Getting better this summer requires intentional training, not only of your physical skills but also the training of your mind. This summer we hope you will make a goal to develop permanent confidence. What is permanent confidence? It is confidence that is unshakable. Permanent confidence is something no one can take away because compliments do not inflate you and criticism cannot defeat you.

22

www.CampNavigator.com Vol-1; Issue 2

How do you develop permanent confidence? 1. If possible, especially when developing a new skill, choose an encouraging environment. Not all environments are equal. The best place to grow is in an environment where you are given grace for mistakes, kind correction and courage to keep going. It’s possible to survive in Antarctica with harsh wind and violent weather, but it’s very tough and few make it. Similarly, confidence has a hard time becoming permanent in an environment of criticism, perfectionism and/ or insult. 2. Practice, practice, practice! The truly confident person loves hard work and is willing to do the work necessary to become great. The difference between a confident person and a cocky person is the confident

person is open to looking at, talking about, and working on his or her weaknesses. When you have permanent confidence, you don’t become crushed by mistakes. You can grow and learn and even be thankful for mistakes because they will show you ways to improve. 3. Remember, not all thoughts are equal. A person with permanent confidence doesn’t allow certain thoughts to have any time in his or her head. If they are destructive thoughts, they are not allowed entrance. Truly confident people understand each of us has a choice to think something or throw it out.

look at your weaknesses with hope and think great thoughts. Becoming more confident is a choice. NBC Camps, founded in 1971 has become the largest overnight basketball and volleyball camp program in the world located in over 50 cities and 5 countries.

In 2012, make developing permanent confidence a summer goal. As much as you can, get around people and programs that will build you up, not tear you down. Be willing to

hese are relevant outcomes that add value to healthy human development. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 62 percent of children aged nine- to thirteen-years-old did not participate in any physical activity during nonschool hours, and 23 percent engaged in no daily physical activity. It is not surprising that a 2005 – 2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey indicated 33 percent of six- to eleven-year-old youth are overweight or at risk of being overweight. Or, consider that during the summer months, summer learning loss equals up to two months of instruction (as measured by grade level equivalents) on standardized math and reading test scores.

On the other hand, learning that occurs through the camp experience supports the development of twenty-first century competencies, such as critical thinking and problem solving, collaboration, adaptability, initiative, and imagination, that help prepare children to learn. The camp experience is a legitimate and viable learning environment offering both relevance and value.

Camp Howe, Goshen, MA © 2010 American Camping Association, Inc.

Yet, the camp experience is also a unique learning environment. The camp experience is an accumulation of moments that build a foundation for the future. Moments of wonder and exploration surround a camper. Sensory impact is comprehensive and profound. It may be as simple as standing outside and being able to smell rain before it falls. Campers are given the opportunity to be aware and in the moment, allowing full emersion of the experience. Youth approach life with density and intensity — the camp experience matches that moment by moment.

Speak from a position of strength advocating for the camp experience as an important learning environment. Advocate for the future camper . . . and the accumulation of moments that can make a positive change in the life of a camper.

Quick Handle Basketball

PURE In this crazy & fast paced world of basketball there appears to be 2 competing and conflicting opinions;

1

A passive attitude on the part of parents and players to just have fun and approach the game with a positive attitude-- no real serious commitment, and it’s all about self-esteem & self-image. This type of pervasive attitude produces laziness, indifference and can lead to entitlement;

2

The other perspective is a kind of win-at-all-costs mentality, where many times dedication (maximum effort, discipline, work ethic, responsibility, loyalty etc.) to a sport is substituted for positioning and moving around from program to program, trying to position a player for playing time when they may not be good enough, or have not earned the right to play, or think they’re so good that they should receive special treatment . This attitude also can sometimes create a ‘somebody owes me something’ mentality. If not careful, this can lead to a single minded attitude of selfishness, individual play and cause numerous problems and setbacks in the future. It fails to teach commitment, loyalty and responsibility to stay the course even through adversity.

I

want to share with you a radical point of view that is individual in nature and a mindset that is without excuse, without compromise and without marginalizing the price that needs to be paid to experience maximum achievement. It is a square, boldface look at a peak performance mind-set that sets the bar so high that it creates a sense of empowerment that is second to none. The concept I am talking about is ‘Pure’. I use the acronym Pure because when you apply the principles to its maximum level, you will achieve supreme success, with no regrets and you can live free with the fact that you left it all out on the floor.

Passion : Passion is an undying spirit that is enthusiastically committed to a

goal and dream. Passion understands its purpose and doesn’t fear failure but embraces all the facets of trying to achieve a goal

Urgency : Urgency is that inner trigger that says it’s now or never. Urgency is that attitude of drive. There is no sitting around. No vacation of laziness. It is time to work and to realize that if you’re not working and (hard) somebody is outworking you

Resolve :

This is an attitude that is formed during the weakest and most difficult times and at the lowest points at which it appears that all odds are against you. You have an inner switch that says I will not relinquish, I will not relent, I will not give up or give in, but I will be more determined than ever to stick with my dreams and goals and see it to the end.

Extreme : Your goals should be extreme, your dreams should be extreme, your drive should be extreme, and your effort should be extreme; no holding back. The gas pedal is all the way down and you will not be denied.

Pure is radical, pure goes against the flow, pure is not always popular because it isn’t about pandering, it isn’t about anything other than making it happen, laying everything out and maximizing every ounce of your God given potential without compromise.

May you experience the power of a pure focused and determined heart, and may you apply these principles - BECAUSE GREATNESS AWAITS YOU!!

Lake George, New York Summer Camp Is Great For Kids & Parents Alike!

How Camp Benefits Your Kids & You As A Parent

Discover the many ways Lake George New York summer camp can benefit your kids and you as a parent!

In fact, sending your kids away to camp might actually bring you closer together! Writing letters back and forth with a few short phone calls in between, you become your child’s new pen pal and long-distance friend. And that long-awaited reunion after camp’s end is enough to bring tears of joy and laughter! Lake George summer camp also offers a wealth of other rewards for kids and parents, highlighted below...

Fun & Adventure Your kids will never forget some of the memories and friendships they’ve made at camp. From dark nights where they stayed up late to tell scary ghost stories... to those times where they laughed so hard they cried... summer camp is a chance for your kids to have fun in a safe environment! While away at camp, kids get the opportunity to try new projects, explore new places and learn new skills. With a mixture of indoor and outdoor activities, Adirondack summer camps in Lake George provide a great setting for your child to enjoy a carefree summer full of fun and adventure.

Social Skills Meeting new friends is what summer camp is all about! Even if your kids typically assume a shy role at school or among their friends, camp is a brand new opportunity for them to blossom and become outgoing. While away at a Lake George summer camp, kids are encouraged to work in teams with the other campers and treat everyone with respect. It’s a great way for them to learn organization and camaraderie! And you may be delighted as a parent to find that your kids may take these new social skills home with them!

Excercise Swimming, hiking, active games, sports and all sorts of activity abound at summer camps in Lake George. Your kids will be encouraged to try new activities and keep going and going all through summer camp. And though it seems like fun and games to them, it is actually providing some great exercise and helping to keep them in shape through the summer months in the absence of gym class.

Structure & Discipline Hey parents, did you know that the structure and discipline in place at summer camp can help make your job easier when your kids come home? To maintain order among rowdy campers, each day at summer camp is scheduled and structured. And because unruly campers may miss out on fun activities, kids are anxious to behave and listen to instruction. Your kids will learn appropriate conduct, how to follow a schedule and the discipline to stay organized within a group setting. These are all valuable lessons to take home!

Maturity You may notice a newfound independence when your kids return home from their summer camp. At camp, they may be encouraged to take initiative, handle difficult tasks and take on leadership roles. These are character-building years, and your child can benefit greatly from the opportunities summer camp offers.
