e are excited to announce that the CampNavigator’s debut edition, released in spring, is a huge success! We have received a tremendous amount of positive feedback on it. We want to thank the contributors, advertisers, and readers for making the CampNavigator Magazine a success. At CampNavigator, we are focused on and committed to empowering parents with accurate information to make informed decisions about summer camp. Camp experience is an accumulation of experiences that build the foundation for personal and professional development, making it quite a unique learning environment. Our CampNavigator Magazine shares knowledge to enrich the lives of children, youth and adults through the camp experience. Summer is finally here, and many of us are looking forward to the start of Summer Camp. We are busy packing our Camp supplies, getting prepared for Camp, and full of anticipation for what the Summer holds. During this busy time, it’s important to remember Camper safety, specifically water safety. Many Camps have water activities and our little campers need to understand the importance of water safety prior to attending Camp. A Safe Camper is a Happy Camper

ummer time means camp for more than 11 million children each year. These experiences, whether at day- or sleepaway camp, can help children build social skills, self-confidence and selfesteem. One of the best things parents can do is let their child learn to be more independent, and camp can be great for your child’s development. But, like so much in parenting, we want to do everything we can to keep our children safe, even when they are away from us. As a mother of three, I know very well what it is like to send your children off to camp and worry about their safety. As the President and CEO of Safe Kids Worldwide, I spend my time working to help prevent all kinds of injuries among children the world over. Safe Kids offers a variety of injury prevention safety tips for parents and caregivers, including some that are very relevant to the camp environment, such as how to keep kids safe around water and when they are playing a sport. Here are some simple steps you can take to prepare your child for a safe camp experience: Share medical and emergency contact information. Camps should have accurate medical information and contact information in the event of an emergency. Parents can do their part by ensuring counselors know if their child has any special medical conditions, like asthma, that requires special attention. Teach your child to be safe around water. Lots of camps have pools or open water, and it’s a good idea for children to be prepared for swimming and boating well before camp begins. As a mom, I knew how important it was to enroll my children in swimming lessons to make sure they knew how to tread water and float. Children who will be swimming in open water should know that it can be very different than swimming in a pool, and no matter where they swim, they should know to never, ever swim alone. It is also important to check if the camp has designated lifeguards on duty while kids are swimming. Safe Kids’ water safety guide offers more tips on keeping kids safe in and around water. Help your child remember to stay hydrated. Whether they are at a sports camp or simply playing games at camp, kids often forget to stop

for a drink of water when they are active. Hydration is critical, especially during hot summer days. Did you know that children could become dehydrated before symptoms even start to appear? Parents and counselors should encourage children to drink water frequently and not wait until they are thirsty. Our sports safety guide offers checklists and other helpful tips on keeping kids active, healthy and safe on and off the playing field. Know the signs of concussion. Children can sustain head injuries from a fall, a collision with another child, or from bumping their head on the bottom of the pool or the side of a dock. Do you and your child’s counselors know the signs and symptoms of a concussion? About 90 percent of concussions occur without the loss of consciousness, so you may want to find out if camp counselors are aware of the signs and symptoms of concussions. Learn more from Safe Kids’ concussion guide for parents, and consider sharing our concussion guide for coaches with your child’s counselors. Camp can and should be a fun experience for children and parents, so I hope these ideas will help you prepare your child for a safe summer at camp and elsewhere. Like sirens to sailors, the internet beckons to us every second of the day. Here’s a Wikipedia citation you can trust: “since the mid-1990s the Internet has had a drastic impact on culture and commerce…” Drastic, indeed…and coming at you and your family with the force of a tsunami. Open your home page and crises, near and abroad, hover ominously over celebrity fat photos that beg for a peek…or two or three. (Without make-up? Yes, please!) Katy Perry, Kate Middleton, Katniss Everdeen? Hello!…just a click away, and but a fractious sampling of the multiplicity of tentacles that reach through the internet’s ether to grab your attention. Why not just give in? The problem with full out surrender to this dizzying panoply of distraction is that the Internet’s Adventure Land is uncharted terrain resembling both Alice’s Rabbit Hole and Sleeping Beauty’s Maze of Brambles, where neither safe return nor timely awakening are assured nor guaranteed. You, as loving guardian, cannot gift a shield strong enough for your child to withstand the exponentially proliferating onslaught of the internet’s easily accessed Good, Bad, Ugly and Truly Terrifying. You can, however, offer a strong Lifeline to Planet Earth’s physical, present day reality. As an Acting Coach and Theatre Director, I admit my bias, but Acting– particularly Stage Acting–can serve as that Lifeline. Yes, art classes, sports, hiking, pottery or pastry-making are noble pursuits that antidote the tendency for kids to tune out amidst their techno-toys. But, IMAO–and years of experience–a well designed and taught Acting Camp program quickly builds (1) Focus, (2) Discipline, (3) Critical thinking (4) Leadership and (5) Compassion. These are the self same tools your child needs to manage the wonders of, and defend against the dangers of, cyberspace’s ‘brave new world.’

How does a young person benefit from an Acting Camp? Here are some of the benefits we foster and see gloriously manifested every year at The Summer Theatre Camp of Montclair: Focus: While our campsite is clean, beautiful and inviting, our camp program is profound in its simplicity and refreshingly devoid of technological distractions. (I sometimes jokingly refer to The Summer Theatre Camp of Montclair as the “No Bells and Whistles Camp.”) Young people fall in love with the uncluttered clarity of the environment: shiny wood floors, scripts, music and Our Own Wonderful Selves. It’s an exhilarating formula! Less distractions=more opportunity to concentrate. Voila! Our focus is stronger, longer and more consolidated. Discipline: Because our day is built on tasks that are mental and physical, the habituation of these tasks builds strength. When we develop the habit of performing these tasks at the same time each day, with the support of our cast mates and instructors, we become stronger, more competent and, henceforth, more disciplined with each repetition. Critical Thinking: Along with repetition for memorization, acting involves the effort to understand meaning and to convey meaning to our cast mates, director and audience. This is done through asking questions, learning word meanings, reading

vocal, facial and physical cues and discriminating what is of lesser and greater importance in a scene or play. Acting requires us to also know the ‘meaning underneath the meaning‘ or, in theatrical lingo, the sub-text… and sub-text is where Truth lies is all conversation, onstage and off. Critical thinking is an essential life skill professionally, personally and socially. However, the most important aspect of critical thinking is the ability to determine how to spend ones’ time–and life–for its utmost most significance. Leadership: Each day, camp participants arrive, fresh from sleep and dropped off at our campsite, unadorned and simply clad. Throughout the course of the day they work with acting coaches, a yoga coach, a vocal coach, a choreographer, and some great assistants. Through this work, we learn acceptance of each other’s strengths and how to shore up the parts of us that need more strengthening. The problem-solving is rich and of a higher order in Acting Camp

because theatrical process is the meeting of challenges of time, space, budget and personality in the most efficient way possible, This problem-solving, coupled with inspiration, is a formula for confidence and Leadership Compassion (the most notable of our Life Tools): Smart phones, gaming devices, ipads, laptops, etcetera, are left at our stage door. In their absence, the glossy patina of clever-ish snark is replaced by sincere, patient communication. Instead of peering into our phones or computers, we peer into each other’s eyes to discover that we are all pieces of one beautifully fractured pane of glass. And when we choose to gather the shattered pieces and hold them up, we can see through to each other. And wonder of wonders, those same transparent fragments of glass reflect our own identities back to ourselves, piece by lovely piece.

Advice to parents

If your child is having a hard time at camp, speak to the camp staff. If they are aware of any concerns there is possibly a quick and simple fix. Every child reacts differently to new environments. Let the staff help your child achieve happiness and laughter at camp. I have a 5, 3 and 1 year old, all of whom show different strengths and weaknesses in different situations. Each child deserves attention and success. Help guide them through the new learning experience so they are able to find the courage to love their new camp selection.

BC Camps, formerly Northwest Basketball Camps, has grown to become the largest and most popular overnight basketball and volleyball program in the world. NBC Camps also provides instruction in soccer and football. Over the last 40 years, we have trained 250,000 athletes. Located in the U.S., Austria, Canada, UK and Italy, NBC Camps is dedicated to elevating personal excellence on and off the court. Our goal is to teach athletes how to compete with confidence, high skill level and intensity. NBC Camps began in 1971 as Northwest Basketball Camp. Founder Fred Crowell thought it a leap of faith to call it “Northwest” Basketball camp as he began the first camp held in Cusick, Washington, with 108 campers. Crowell, at the age of twenty-three became one of the youngest Division 1 coaches in America. Under his coaching, University of Alaska Fairbanks had its first winning season in the history of the college. He left Alaska and joined Campus Crusade for Christ as the first coach for Athletes in Action, a program facing top 20 teams night after

night, sharing a message of community and wholeness, and developing into an exhibition team with one of the most wins in history. Crowell dreamed of a basketball camp that would train athletes to win both on and off the court. He wanted a program that would provide the best basketball training, create an atmosphere of encouragement, hard work, respect and compassion, and teach athletes to compete not only physically but with their hearts and minds. Coach Crowell combined his background of Division 1 coaching with his psychology background as a former family counselor. He wanted to give athletes an edge to physically, mentally and spiritually achieve the disciplined life of excellence. Many told Crowell his idea of combining athletics, faith and values were unrealistic. Now, 40 years later, Crowell’s dream has become reality as his vision has expanded to include multiple sports with over 10,000 athletes competing in NBC Camps programs around the world.

DEVELOP PERMANENT CONFIDENCE THIS SUMMER Getting better this summer requires intentional training, not only of your physical skills but also the training of your mind. This summer we hope you will make a goal to develop permanent confidence. What is permanent confidence? It is confidence that is unshakable. Permanent confidence is something no one can take away because compliments do not inflate you and criticism cannot defeat you.

How do you develop permanent confidence? 1. If possible, especially when developing a new skill, choose an encouraging environment. Not all environments are equal. The best place to grow is in an environment where you are given grace for mistakes, kind correction and courage to keep going. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s possible to survive in Antarctica with harsh wind and violent weather, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very tough and few make it. Similarly, confidence has a hard time becoming permanent in an environment of criticism, perfectionism and/ or insult. 2. Practice, practice, practice!
