Varsity magazine defining lifestyle, embracing perspective, art and culture. Campus Culture magazine. It is an educational lifestyle magazine that seeks to create excitement, vibrancy and pride within the various campuses in Zimbabwe. It is inspired by the need to create an entertaining, vibrant and informative cultural text with an embracive identity of Zimbabwean Universities While Universities are known for their unparalleled academic dexterity we believe that it is equally important for their social wellness to be captured. Campus Culture also seeks to contribute in the production of a student who is socially equipped and ready to spread the excitement and acquired knowledge to the rest of the world.
Campus Culture campusculture3.0@gmail.com @Campus_culture Campusculturemag www.campusculture.co.zw campuscultureApp
University life is made up of a lot of life changing moments and Campus Culture desires to capture those beautiful moments and present them in an entertaining and creative way for the social development of the university and its lucrative student. The name of the magazine is hugely motivated by the need to position the Zimbabwean University community not only recognised as the epitome of academia but a wholesome institution that caters for all components that constitute a complete and compatible student. Hence, the desire to create a platform that will provide every individual in his or her individuality, is our biggest inspiration. The fact that the name of the magazine cannot be clearly and contextually defined it gives every student the opportunity to define it in their own way. As such, the magazine will be based in ALL universities with every university having a Campus Culture team that will be responsible for gathering the news and also distribution. One can say Campus Culture is student led, student driven and about the students.

In the same year they came together again for the summer smash track ’Happy’. Since then, their collaborative magic has gained impressive momentum both locally and internationally leading to the releases of ‘Madrinks’, ‘The Realness’ and ‘I Need’, all produced by Take Fizzo. All three continue to gain the attention of hip-hop aficionados as separate entities. However with numerous live performances together already under their belt and an increasing demand for more coupled with the growing anticipation of their first album ‘The Feeling Aint Fair’, the formation of this new super-team is a natural progression. It solidifies their powerful collaborative chemistry and takes hip hop back to its roots…to the turntables and a mic standard. This new formation is called Few Kings.

#Aunty CC
Hey y’all, Meet me- AUNTY CC… a cultured lady (campus-cultured too) of a certain age. You know better than ask a lady her age. What matters is I’ve seen it all and I KNOW EVERYTHING…trust me. I understand how subjective opinions are but mine gain objectivity because I AM THE ORACLE. And that right there settles the argument-if there was one- about my qualifications. Here’s a stony shoulder to lean on…now LEAN ON IT. Dear Aunty CC… I love my best friend to death but her bad breath could be the death of our friendship. She loves to whisper and half the time I don’t hear what she says but just the sick taste of puke in my mouth. Should I resort to the offer-the-mint move? ***PUKY BFF*** Hey Puky BFF, You could go all old school and hand the mint but what if bad breath could kill her? In the advent of scientific
discoveries-that is a sad possibility…because she could die holding a mint from you and you’ll have to live with the guilt and shame. Don’t be selfish…think also about her boyfriend, you can’t stand the whispers; imagine ALL he has to stand. How about you hand her that mint or the new Colgate and give her some tough love starting with ‘We need to talk….’ I wish you all the best, you’ll need it. Oh …and don’t forget to take the tissues – you hand her those when she starts to cry. Aunty CC …signing out! Dear Aunty CC Hey Aunty CC…. so here it goes-I recently scored a hot babe and I’m going crazy. Not just Beyonce Crazy In Love type of crazy but more…WHAT DO I GOTTA DO TO KEEP HER. Every time I blink some guy is sniffing at my catch. I figured you could give me some HOW TO KEEP A HOT BABE tips….please I beg you-I still need my sanity to finish my dissertation. Help me keep her and IT! ******HOT BABE CRAZE*** Hey Hot Babe Craze Congratulations are in order I guess for the ‘hot’ babe. Are you sure she’s that hot though…that being the reason the other guys are acting like dogs ‘sniffing’ around her? Maybe it could be something on her teeth from lunch or toothpaste in her hair that you don’t see love being blind and all. If you are sure, really sure she’s that hot then MAN UP…mark your territory. Love is a jungle man… and only one man
can be king in that jungle. ROAR, be the one with the ‘eye of the tiger.’ Lastly remember she saw all those guys and made the crazy decision to be with you and so…get on with that dissertation-keep your degree at least. CC out! Dear Aunty CC…. I am a 21 year old boy from the green pastures of Rusitu Village in Chimanimani. I am a first year Accounting student and I’d like to know if there is a way to mask my rural background. I am so eager to fit in and be part of the urban culture I see at varsity. **** Rural ‘Boy’**** My man, Rurel Boy I have good and bad news. Let me start with the bad news so I can have a dramatic drum roll for the good news bit. Bad news is you can’t wake up tomorrow and erase all the 21years of ‘cow herding barefoot feeding on matohwe under a muzhanje tree.’ Isn’t that what rural culture is all about? It is probably the edge you have over all the city snobs and aunty CC herself. So how about standing out…be THE GUY who grew up in a remote village and did all the ‘exciting’ rural stuff. The good news….then watch and learn as the urban and campus culture unfolds before your eyes. Maybe in 4 years you won’t be remembered as the rural loser that mean city snobs think you are….OR you could still be that rural guy but with more experience and immune to it all!

Miss MSU Modeling Pageants
T he Ana l yi si s B y F . G e r ald Mugoni (M S U)
There has been a lot of ranting about poor pageants that in subtle ways extends from tertiary institutions to the National pageants. Drawing from past experience Miss MSU has become synonymous with artists not turning up, missiles raining on stage and poor delivery by acts on stage amongst a milliard of other negatives that have rendered the event an almost nonexistent status in the circles of MSU students and Gweru dwellers, it was just that other event on the college calendar.
The year 2013 leaves a gap in what was supposed to be an annual event as the event never came “officially” due to some in-house scandals and bogus organisers. This is history and far from the point, Miss MSU 2014 is what I’m narrowing down to in this article. For the planning part no one was available for comment so i will skip that part, my first port of call would then be the advertising of the event which naturally would require a lot of resources and at least a month’s worth of time for it to realise maximum capacity. Miss MSU 2014 was announced 4 days before the scheduled date by way of a few posters around campus and this time was supposed to be
sufficient for the selection of models ,their training and for word to travel around so as to enable as many people to prepare for and attend the pageant. The selection process of the models was marred by a lot of irregularities ,poor advertising being the foremost as many worthy ladies did not even know about the event prior to the night of the pageant and then another major worry arises in the height of the models which left a lot to be desired. The last part was the stage, though it came well better than the previous competitions it was shaky and almost got affected by the slight showers that fell ,in general a lot still needs to be done to raise the pageant back to its awed standards. After all has been said and done we get to the juicy part were we actually talk about what happened on the eve of the celebrated pageant. Contestants ranging from first-year freshmen to graduate students took to the ramp to walk it out compete for the coveted Miss MSU crown and that once in a lifetime chance to compete for Miss Universities Zimbabwe. Makaitatenzi popularly known in the socialite circles
as Shamie was crowned the 2014 Miss Midlands State University on Friday 14 March .Makaita is a first year pursuing studies in ........She is also an exceptional sports woman playing Hockey for the .......... in the Red Coat band and performed a baton twirling routine as her talent. All of her fellow hockey mates were present that night and brought handmade signs that spelt “We Love Maka!”She will go on to compete in the Miss Universities pageant. Makaita competed among eight female students for the title of Miss Midlands State 2014. Out of the many girls who applied to compete, these girls were chosen based on their achievements in academics, service, and leadership. Former winners were involved in this year's event to entertain the crowd. Renowned dancehall artists Lady Squanda, Freeman and General Sniper Storm graced the occasion and gave mouth-watering performances that left those who had thronged the event yearning for more. Valerie Chereni as the reigning Miss MSU also assisted the two emcees of the night, Kudzai Jeke, and Kim, by asking questions during the interview portion. Like any beauty pageant, the competition consisted of four components: talent were the models did dances, interview, freaky and funky attire which was basically about wild modern fashion trends, the traditional and cultural which saw the
models donning clothes that showcased our unique African cultures and lastly evening wear that tells its own story that jumped the crowd more than once. Each task was performed seamlessly by each contestant with only a few minor bumps and missteps, mainly in the talent portion. Every winter weight gain makes us want to forget that fad diets are sustainable at best, hazardous at worst. Wouldn’t it be lovely to shake off those few kilos quickly for this summer and spend this summer with a healthy new attitude to eating? Well starving ourselves is not the option to losing weight. It is highly toxic and unhealthy as we deprive our bodies with the essential nutrients for a healthy and lengthy living. Eating should not be a hindrance to attaining a sexy body and losing that pot belly. One needs to be careful with the foods they ingest only. Starving ourselves is a definite no no!. STUDENTS DRESSING BETTER THAN CELEBRITIES BY TRISH T HAKATA
At University we do not only pride ourselves in academic excellence, we also ooze of a certain sense of style. A person’s self esteem is usually boosted when they feel good about themselves. If a person looks good they in turn feel good inside and in their minds they convince themselves that they can conquer the world. The road to success begins with you telling yourself that you can achieve greatness. For those who starve themselves or hate their bodies because of the Western idea of what beauty is, it is high time you stop! Be proud of the fact that you are the only kind of you that the Lord ever created. You can look better than the so called celebrities you very much idolize. No matter which body type you are, be proud, know which clothes best compliment your figure and rock them! I am encouraging all my fellow fashion maniacs and those who’ve got “glam bition”, looking great and being beautiful means so little if not accompanied by brains and a great personality. Beauty is only skin deep and it fades, clothes become outdated and body shapes change with age but a great mind is a treasure even nature can’t take away. It remains the same, if it should change it changes for the better and more so it lives on even when you pass away. With a combination of looks, a great personality and intelligence you will be truly unstoppable! Here are some students who have been dressed and styled by yours truly only to prove that you do not need to be a celebrity or have Coco Chanel on speed dial to look better than them. Get motivated and start your own transformation which makes you look and feel better. Ciao!

Women In Sport by Trish Tatenda Hakata
Gone are the days when the role of woman in society was confined to the bedroom or the household. The emancipation of women in the early 90s saw women shift from being marginalised to becoming pivotal figure in the community. They did not only start making guns and ammunition or become political figures; they also started participating in sport. Since the introduction of the Olympic Games in ‌ it can be noted that there has been a tremendous effort to make sport more inclusive by increasing the number of sporting activities for women participation. True as it may that women are now being noticed in sport, it is however important to note that their recognition still has not been as widespread as compared to that of men. Women are seen as weaker that men which often than not is an unfair assumption. These stereotypical views do not apply to the sportswomen at the University of Zimbabwe though. The institute has seen the rise of outstanding ladies who have excelled in their various disciplines and have become inspirational figures at the University and the community as a whole proving that they are as good as their male counterparts.
One such team is the Netball girls’ team.
The netball girls have travelled around the continent leaving behind a legacy wherever they set foot. The team is well known for their zeal and impeccable teamwork. This team helped in necessitating the rise of three immaculate players who were recently chosen to represent the country in Malawi. Caroline Musemwa (BAIII), Faith Nhundu (HSOIII) and Prudence Goreraza (HSOIII) have made a name for themselves as they travelled doing what they love best. Tall, beautiful and very skilled they walk towards the netball pitch with pride, ready to showcase their talent. As soon as they start passing the ball to each other and shooting with no difficulty one can’t help but be mesmerised by the whole scene. They start laughing and cheering each other on in such a way that if you were not a part of the team you would want to be.
I sat down with the ladies and we had a very interesting conversation. Apparently despite their achievements they still felt like they were being marginalised as a team. They went for a two-week tour in Capetown, South Africa and the University only provided one tracksuit for them to wear each and every day of the two weeks. If it was not for a parent who donated another kit the girls would have worn the same uniform for 14days. They also feel cheated when it comes to
prize money at the ZUSA games because the boys get twice the prize money as they do in the process demoralising them and making them feel of lesser importance. Still the ladies claim that even though they are being treated unfairly they still play their sport with as much love as when they started when they did not even know one could be paid for doing something they loved. Since they have been to UZ they have travelled to Capetown, Namibia, Swaziland and Malawi. They have gained much exposure and made new friends whilst travelling representing their country through playing Netball. Even with the way they kept on holding hands as they spoke it could be seen that they had become more than teammates; they had formed a sisterly bond which one could not help but notice. I could detect national pride with the way their tones suddenly change as they describe their experiences. With so much travelling one would be tempted to think that they are lagging behind in their school work bud not these three young women. They are a living testimony that one can be the best in anything they set their minds to do. What lacks is the platform to prove and showcase their various talents without feeling as if they are doing for nothing. After such an interesting and motivating conversation with Carol, Prudence and Faith, I also believe anything can be achieved and the limit to success is beyond the sky.
