Write To Your Paper About The National Organization for Marriage’s Anti-Gay Extremism Live and study in Maine, Maryland, Washington, and Minnesota? Concerned about groups fighting against marriage equality in your state? Write to your campus and local community newspapers and inform your fellow students and community about the National Organization for Marriage's (NOM) anti-gay extremism! NOM is the most powerful group working to deny gay and lesbian couples the right to marry in these four states, and it's working overtime to demonize gay and lesbian individuals and families. Check out the “What You Need to Know About The National Organization For Marriage” resource sheet for more information. Here are a few Letter to the Editor templates you can use to drive home your message about NOM’s extremism:

LTE #1 (What NOM’s extremism means for inclusive, welcoming campuses) To the Editor: Marriage equality isn't the only thing at stake this fall in [Minnesota/Maine/Maryland/Washington] - so are inclusive and welcoming campuses nationwide. The most prominent group bankrolling the effort to deny gay and lesbian couples the right to marry in [Minnesota/Maine/Maryland/Washington] is also recruiting college students to push their lies and anti-gay propaganda. As a recent undercover investigative report revealed, the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) peddled the following falsehoods to college students at their student conference this summer: • Gay relationships are dysfunctional and inherently unstable • Children raised by gay parents are more likely to be sexually abused • Children raised by gay parents are more likely to be gay too

Not only is NOM inviting these students to promote these lies on campus, the group consistently advocates against anti-bullying measures that protect LGBTQ students and condemns gay-straight alliances as “incubators of moral relativism.” Standing up to NOM isn't just about fighting for marriage equality; it's about saying “no” to groups that seek to create a world that's hostile to LGBTQ people and students.

LTE #2 (Emphasis on NOM’s extremism in MAINE) To the Editor: As a student in [and/or resident in Maine], I am concerned about groups working to block marriage equality in this state and throughout the country. One such “pro-family” group is the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), which is currently spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to deny gay and lesbian couples the right to marry throughout the country. In Maine alone, NOM has pumped $250,000 into Protect Marriage Maine to defeat the state’s pro-marriage equality referendum in November while working overtime to demonize gay and lesbian individuals and families. Here are just a few of the lies they peddled to college students at their most recent student conference this past July:

• Gay relationships are dysfunctional and inherently unstable • Children raised by gay parents are more likely to be sexually abused • Children raised by gay parents are more likely to be gay too

As NOM tries to sway voters in Maine with these lies this fall, I hope that my fellow students [and residents of ME] will see through their bigotry and fight back.

LTE #3 (Emphasis on NOM’s extremism in MARYLAND) To the Editor: As a student in [and/or resident in Maryland], I am concerned about groups working to turn back the clock on equality in this state and throughout the country. One such “pro-family” group is the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), which is currently spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to deny gay and lesbian couples the right to marry throughout the country. In Maryland alone, NOM is working with the Maryland Marriage Alliance to repeal the state’s proposed marriage equality law in November by race-baiting and spreading anti-gay propaganda. Here are just a few of the lies they peddled to college students at their most recent student conference this past July: • Gay relationships are dysfunctional and inherently unstable • Children raised by gay parents are more likely to be sexually abused • Children raised by gay parents are more likely to be gay too

As NOM tries to sway residents of Maryland with these lies this fall, I hope that my fellow students [and residents of MD] will see right through their bigotry and fight back.

LTE #4 (Emphasis on NOM’s extremism in WASHINGTON) To the Editor: As a student in [and/or resident in Washington], I am concerned about groups working to turn back the clock on equality in this state and throughout the country. One such “pro-family” group is the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), which is currently spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to deny gay and lesbian couples the right to marry throughout the country. In Washington, the group has already pumped $250,000 into the anti-Referendum 74 campaign. And the group is working overtime to demonize gay and lesbian individuals and families. Here are just a few of the lies they peddled to college students at their most recent student conference this past July: • Gay relationships are dysfunctional and inherently unstable • Children raised by gay parents are more likely to be sexually abused • Children raised by gay parents are more likely to be gay too

As NOM tries to sway Washington voters with these lies this fall, I hope that my fellow students [and residents of WA] will see through their bigotry and fight back.

LTE #5 (Emphasis on NOM’s extremism in MINNESOTA) To the Editor: As a student in [and/or resident in Minnesota], I am concerned about groups working to bar marriage equality in this state and throughout the country. One such “pro-family” group is the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), which is currently spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to deny gay and lesbian couples the right to marry throughout the country. In Minnesota, NOM is working closely with the group Minnesota for Marriage to spread misinformation about marriage equality. Here are just a few of the lies they peddled to college students at their most recent student conference this past July: • Gay relationships are dysfunctional and inherently unstable • Children raised by gay parents are more likely to be sexually abused • Children raised by gay parents are more likely to be gay too

As NOM tries to sway Minnesota voters with these lies this fall, I hope that my fellow students [and residents of MN] will see through their bigotry and fight back.
