Pink Diamonds Are Made Under Pressure
integrity of the students in CSTHS and how people perceive them as role models and good figures for others. SciTechians are often labeled as the epitome of dexterity and excellency among other schools. They have a reputable image as seen with the trophies, certificates and medals they bag when joining multiple contests within or beyond their school’s vicinity. They learn from the very best from the day they step foot onto the pink territory. These talented students live up to their image and continue to carry on to their golden legacy. Even when thrown the biggest rocks, they still have the ability to persist despite the heavy pressure they carry behind their backs; this is why they are called SciTechians.
To be a Scitechian means to have what it takes to pass multiple hurdles to truly
the catchphrase suggests. Some teachers from this school emphasize the thought that CSTHS teaches you things that other schools do not. The lack of equipment in the school’s facilities requires the students to think of innovative solutions to cope up with the insufficient instruments. Hence, the school teaches the students the importance of finding the silver lining.
Moreover, to “Be SciTech” gives you the capability to work under pressure. Take the case of last year’s Mapeh Culmination, the students were only given less than a month to prepare for the highly-anticipated event. Despite the challenge, they were still able to deliver performances with great composure and confidence. The effort that it takes to juggle between responsibilities in traditional academics and extracurricular activities are the reasons why they are built differently, which might be where the catchphrase “Be Scitech” is coming from.
“become one of the pink”. There are academic proficiency tests that one must pass before getting into the school. These tests include literacy, typing skills, I.Q and talent. After successfully getting through these roadblocks, one must then carry the status of being SciTech.

Although a lot goes on from carrying the name, it is still something the SciTechians take pride in as it took a lot of hard work and perseverance to get to where they are right now. The catchphrase reflects who the SciTechians are– competent intellectuals, with a heart. The school they belong to is an avenue wherein the lessons taught do not only stick to the mind, but also resonate with the heart. It is the very place they are meld to showcase their bright identity. Showcasing their full potential under any circumstance– akin to diamonds that are formed under pressure– that is the true essence of “Be SciTech”.
NO TRUE WINS WITH NO REAL VALIDATION
by Mary Faith Matugas
Writing, acting, and editing mixed with blood, sweat, and tears — all used to make a Siyensikula contest possible and remarkable. However, are all the efforts and sleepless nights worth it? I think it is not. We live in a world where time is constricted, but is it that constricted to the point that teachers can’t considr to excuse those students that are contestants for a time-consuming contest? As the scriptwriter for the section who got first place, Tyndall, the claps,
praises, and congratulations are worth all the trouble but not worth all the sleepless nights and skipped meals.
Science high school students are forced to live on a high mountain of expectation and so the pressure is far too high. To be able to produce high quality but also factual lines, I sacrificed my sleep to create one at night because I am not excused during the day. The sound and echoes of claps are not only the basis of
success, it is also self-recognition. Are those that won really won when they didn’t think that what they did was not enough because of the time limit given? Filming is different from writing, and so, teachers must have given students enough time to present what they think should be presented.
Students are not robots. Feeding more and more schoolworks will only make us too full and when the time comes, we will explode. Academic
institutions expect students to provide their best to stay in the ground of cells of academic validation but do not give those students time to figure out the answers to the locked doors.
Have we truly won? Or did we just win because we are the only people to almost figure out the answer?

School Activities’ Silver Linings
by Adelaide Racine Porlas
School is the cradle of creativity, camaraderie, and an interactive learning session that is enhanced by conducting school activities. It may appear to some that having these different endeavors is a hassle, time-bounded, and draining, but these things are what make conducting activities better than having none.
Creativity occurs when an individual is to produce ideas in a span of time. In a school activity setting, the students need to comply with standards for them to win. This may be for a dance competition, slogan, and poster or booth making. No matter what the competition is all about, it still circulates creativity. Take the example of the Science Month Culmination done by the Compostela Science and Technology High School (CSTHS) in September 2023. The students of this event gather ideas, themes, and a trick for their marketing strategy to appear more appealing than the other competitors. It even got to the extent of posting misleading yet funny rumors— which was clarified after, just to make their booths interesting and known. Creativity and appeal are fostered in school activities with the right people.
Collaborating ideas is a hassle for some, but this hassle lessens when you do it with many cooperative people. As the famous quote said “Two heads are better than one”, having someone to help makes the work easier and efficient. The teamwork displayed by every student in an event promotes camaraderie and confidence. These traits can be displayed by making the idea happen. From personal experience of the latest school activity, the Math Month, the students made their ideas for costumes a reality by sewing, cutting, and measuring their respective participants of the event. The interaction between classmates creates a stronger bond which develops their confidence and skills.
Skills are honed in various school activities due to its interactive approach to students. This makes the school activities a fun way to gather knowledge take-aways. Other than its fun nature, it creates a better stimulation of ideas. A trivia game, for example, stirs students to ask their classmates what the answer might be. The support from your friends, classmates, and batchmates as you answer the question gives you a rush of energy. Although some may find these activities draining, being with your classmates and friends surely makes everything better.
Having to conduct different school activities is better than having none despite the hassle, time-bounded, and draining problems it raises because this is what makes the school a pioneer of creativity, camaraderie, and critical thinking. With problems comes thinking, with thinking comes solutions, and with solutions comes success.
Making your weaknesses your strength is the best way to
look at things in a silver lining.
Why would be afraid of problems raised by conducting different school activities when in fact these problems are a chance for students to be better?
“Four? I though classes are from Monday to Friday?,” you may ask. The answer? The newly launched Catch-Up Friday by the Department of Education, held every Friday starting on the second week of February, with the hopes that Filipino students’ literacy rate would not flunk unlike the past couple of years. With this addition to a once normal school week, did students really enhance their literacy skills? I suppose not, as what students really need is rest without exams and projects, not a hectic MondayThursday schedule only to do exhausting activities on Fridays, for brains work best when well-rested.
A study conducted on brains and neurons stated that the brain, the powerhouse of our body, needs adequate rest in order to function for hours without deflating like a balloon. However, ever since the Catch-Up Friday was launched, students did not just reduced their downtime but also sacrificed social and personal activities to submit schoolworks on time. On top of that, quizzes — which are usually conducted alternatively, say Wednesdays and Fridays — have been moved to Wednesdays and Thursdays.
To note that students, especially in
a science high school, already had too much on their plate, the sudden adjustments and lack of time affected the students’ mental, emotional, and physical health. The number of anxiety attacks, mental breakdowns, and emotional meltdowns that are seen in school, specifically in the senior department, have soared ever since the said catch-Up Fridays started.
Students are to eat what they need, not to be starved. We, students, conform to an academic institution’s rules and workload because we are under its supervision and it is the institution’s job to make us learn. However, if the days and time of the students are limited due to an unnecessary addition, shouldn’t the school also lessen the workload they give to the students? I understand that there are competencies to be met but isn’t it inhumane to expect students to submit on time, get passing marks, and be happy all at once when most teachers don’t manage their subject’s time well to the point of overlapping?
The Catch-Up Fridays’ aim may have been to improve the students’ literacy and vocabulary, but the outcome is far different, if not worse, than our situation today. We are to bed with what we really need, not what the institution thinks we need. Enhancing writing, grammar, and reading skills is one, knowing if we enhanced those whilst having adequate rest and time is another. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, so Philippines’ education system and affiliates should think in a student’s perspective, not on a heirarchical one, in order to prevent producing more rotten but with potential apples.
Catch-up Friday: The Key To Unlock Inner Peace
Imagine yourself being locked in a cage full of darkness with chains that restricts your movements which results in insanitylosing your desired inner peace. Have you experienced being lost, confused, and panicked? It is the state that we don’t want to experience. They say that the key for being content and having inner peace is finding the light that makes your heart in tune with emotion. It is easier said than done.
Although, atleast, the senior high school students of Compostela Science and Technology
High school (CSTHS) have managed to provide steps to make this goal of their own to happen. The grade 12 Einsteins catch-up Friday activity has managed to provide a guiding step in unlocking their suppressed emotions that helps them find their way back to inner peace which was evidently shown by the students’ reaction and emotion.
by Adelaide Racine Porlas
Even for a small reaction people tend to judge, and deem people “OA” when they are just merely expressing themselves. This is the reason why most people bottle and restricts themselves from expressing. The catch-up Friday activities facilitated by the grade 12 students are to commend by providing an activity of releasing burdened emotions through meditation. Some people may say that catchup friday is a waste of time, no productivity done, and should have been used for classes. They should come to their senses that academics is as important as knowing who they are through extracurricular activities that catch-up Friday provides. No matter what your actions are, we are driven by emotions. By participating in the grade 12 Einstein’s activity, the students have realized their actions and emotions are valid and important. Catchup friday is a no waste of time.
With the help
of catch-up friday we get to expand our horizons. Horizons in terms of bodily action and especially emotions. Although some may argue that catch-up friday is useless because of so-called no productivity propaganda, they must ask themselves what do they call the progress of these students that through catch-up friday have they understood themselves on a deeper level? Ask yourselves, would you want yourself to stay in that cage of darkness? Locked just because you have not unlocked or have taken a step to inner peace provided by the activities of catch-up Friday.

Hypocrites in its best attributes
by Adelaide Racine Porlas
The greatest enemy of the Philippines is its own. The long history of betrayal has been traced down from the “alleged” turning back from their own countrymen to sabotaging our country’s improvement; whether you agree or not these are all rooted from their hypocrisy and pride. This ill trait of ours has beensadly- existing up until this day, and all at once was seen by the recent issue about the chocolate hills swimming pool scandal.
It is our great pride and joy that the Philippines is a home for the most beautiful places in the world that even UNESCO recognizes. That is why people reacted precariously when the news broke out that our very own UNESCO heritage site, Chocolate Hills, has a recently built swimming pool attraction. Therefore causing the netizens stir of opinions to emerge, but all of them lead to one opinion, it ruins the beauty of Chocolate Hills. Even though the reactions are valid, it has been a wonder that for all the horrendous activities the people has done to our environment, why now?
There were a lot of similar happenings related to conversion of beautiful sites, if only people would fully open their eyes and look around. Take the example of conversion of mountains and hills into a subdivision. It certainly has contributed to the country’s economy, but its positive effect is undermining compared to the negativity it has brought. The process alone of cutting trees to make room for houses causes disruption of the natural habitat of the animals living in the area.
“I got ahead of the curve, the curve became a sphere,” a line from Taylor Swift’s “Mirrorball” song in the Folklore album resonates with most, if not all, students in today’s generation. Students are expected to focus on their academic responsibilities which makes various extracurricular activities or ECA a possible outlet to let all the stress and worries out.
With this notion, ECA serves as an essential for the students’ holistic development as these activities not just broadens teens’ social circle and expands their interest, but also develops leadership abilities, maintain a commitment, and manage time and priorities according to ASVAB Career Exploration Program (1996). Most students, especially from Compostela Science and Technology High School, want to live up to the school and society’s expectations and so ECA can help students avoid repeating a continuous cycle of studying and sleeping, and enjoy the different curves of highs and lows of education.
With fewer trees comes a greater contribution of greenhouse gasses causing climate change to worsen. It creates a domino effect affecting everyone, even the animals. This is already proven by the recent sightings of cobras in Cebu. Their habitats are disturbed due to human activities for a long year of inhabiting the Earth, yet why are now finally opening our eye?
The issue here is not about the “lessened” beauty of Chocolate Hills, but the hypocrisy these people are showing. Although it is good that they have finally recognized the ultimate problem of our country, their recognition will never
be enough if there will be no action done. People are killing people, and people are killing their homeland through actions they have committed to destroy the environment in the past years and possible years to come.
If not for the issue involving the recent Chocolate Hills scandal of pool creation in Bohol, Filipinos would still remain to have no to little care about environmental degradation. It was a wakeup call. Filipinos have finally managed to put their hypocrisy and pride to good use. They now care for protecting the Philippines’ best attribute, but until when? Where will they start
the pivotal change? Will this incident be finally the turning point for Filipinos to finally engage in a long term action of saving the beauty of the orient sea?
”Filipinos’ wake-up call to solve environmental degradation is all rooted in their hypocrisy, but when can they truly care to act?
Fast forward to the 14th of November 2022 on a CNN Philippines article, as Sen. Risa Hontiveros said that some stakeholders found the “ban” counterproductive and limits the holistic learning of students, netizens was able to breathe because ECA “ban” did not just put the students into more pressure, but also puts their academic achievements, character development, and social and community involvement into a halt. By banning the said activities, students may not learn how to socialize equally and properly which can lead to mitigation of broadening social circle and expanding interests that can halt positive long-term effects as stated by Fredricks and Eccles (2006).
With all possible enhancements and developments that extracurricular activities were being blocked, how can we stop the students from running a sphere of cycle of academic
Way back August 27th of 2022, former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte stated that an order stating that the Department of Education were only allowing co-curricular and academic activities will be issued made the netizens vocal with their criticisms towards the government. A netizen even stated “We’re not raising robots. We’re raising human beings,” in a Rappler article which clearly summarized how vacuous it is to remove extracurricular activities in the students’ learning years as activities such as athletics, student government, educational and academic clubs, and many more helped students release academic stress and worries.
stress and validation? According to Ivy Scholars, today’s admissions officers want to foster a diverse and dynamic college atmosphere, and isn’t it ironic how academic institutions want students to be diverse and dynamic with themselves and their environments when they are blocking another source of activities to achieve these? By participating on different extracurriculars, students develop internal and external awareness making them develop leadership skills, maintain commitment, and manage their time and priorities together with the curricular activities which makes them participative without risking burnout from all the lectures, assignments, projects, and quizzes.
Wanting or yearning for validation from getting a good grade is not wrong. However, if students are just going to sit, learn, and study all day long, their development as a whole might be put into a halt as they are only making their brains work with their butt seated. There may not be wrong with getting ahead of the curve, or even everyone, but students may burn themselves out just by solely focusing on their partial and not their holistic development as a student, classmate, friend, child, and/or simply, as a human being.

Compostela Science and Technology High School recently celebrated its annual Acquaintance Party with a rather unusual theme. For a prominent science high school known for its prestige, one would think their theme would be something of class. Instead, it was one that would make seven-year-olds jump for joy. The party was set with a theme familiar to every Filipino’s ear — Jollitown: Building Bridges Where Camaraderie Meets Inner Child.
hildish The in CSTHS stands C
Students were divided into five teams, inspired by the beloved main characters of Jollitown—Jollibee, Hetty, Popo, Yum, and Twirlie. Each team came well-prepared, exuding enthusiasm with spirited cheers and even a mascot that made everyone excited like a toddler, highlighting the childish exuberance of the situation. They also had members from different grade levels assigned to participate in various activities.
Everyone embarked in a whirlwind of fun like that of a kiddie party, forgetting that they’re actual teenagers and adults with responsibilities. From a stranger’s perspective, one might think that these individuals haven’t grown up mentally. While other schools opted for cool and trendy themes, this school went with a juvenile one.
Nevertheless, the theme might be unusual, but it held a deeper purpose. In an interview with SSLG President, Abigail Banaag, she said that high school is the main phase where we begin to have more responsibilities.
“Beneath the laughter and playful costumes, this event was a powerful reminder that in a world of high pressure academics, it is important to nurture our inner child. As students slowly transition into adulthood, the weight of expectations and academic demands can be overwhelming. The Acquaintance Party, with its silly theme, offered a precious break from the daily grind, allowing everyone to reconnect with their lost child within.
Furthermore, the event also accounted for its main purpose—to gain new acquaintances. As a bridge-builder, it facilitated the meeting of new people and strengthening the bonds of existing friendships. Students who used to only pass each other by on campus now share a special bond through inside jokes and shared memories. It’s extraordinary how past memories became the reason for the existence of present ones.
In the end, the seemingly “childish” celebration served a profound purpose. It was a collective sigh of relief, a chance to relish the youth, and a reminder that growing up doesn’t mean having to lose one’s sense of wonder. By embracing their inner child and celebrating it with enthusiasm, these high school students discovered that sometimes, it’s okay to be a little childish, and it can be a bridge to a happier, more balanced life. Jollibee witnessed everyone’s growth as a kid, and now it witnessed everyone’s growth as teenagers transitioning into adulthood.

# SCI TECH
by Kristin Laura Lumapat
Compostela Science and Technology High School, known for its tagline, “#BeScitech,” is a school known for its ingenious learners. It is common knowledge that students at this school have their own skills, talents, and intelligence. With that being said, the school actively utilizes these individual qualities to ensure that each learner can thrive and succeed.
As a transferee student in Scitech, I am certain to say that this school has improved me a lot. I used to be a student who was terrified to speak in front of others, but the people around me showed me that there was nothing to be afraid of. The confidence they bring when they face the crowd inspired me to be just as confident as them. Now, I’ve become this new person who is able to face the crown with complete confidence. This is the effect that the school had on me — the self-conscious, insecure me from before vanished into thin air. They molded me into becoming a better version of myself — someone who is capable of doing anything with confidence, and someone with more knowledge stacked in mind.
The tagline, “#BeScitech,” is a way of encouraging other learners to come along and see the magic Scitech brings in everyone — the ability to improve one’s skill, unleash the inner talent that has been sleeping deep inside of them, and hone the intellect that brought them here.
What Does It Take To BeGreat?

role model, the epitome of every admirable quality – bright, gifted, best among the rest. No one is willing to settle for less. SciTechians are well-known for being intelligent and confident. With the tedious process of screening, in which our capabilities were tested to its peak, it’s no surprise that we are recognized for being exceptional. Still, as draining as it sounds, it’s all completely worth it in the end.
Indeed, it is excellent to be in the shoes of a Scitechian. But underneath this blanket of astounding qualities is a heavy weight from keeping and carrying the expectations and flak of other people. This is a candid take, but even though we are definitely lucky to get accepted into this school, in reality, everything is not all glitz and glamor.
Being a Scitechian alone is already a great accomplishment. Imagine having to keep up your grades, show off your talent, and boost your confidence, just to unlock another chapter of hardships and battles to conquer. But thinking about it — it is an honor, honestly, to be able to overcome those battles. So, we shouldn’t underestimate ourselves, especially since we strive for excellence.

what happened to LOVE? what happened to
Did the genuine and gentle love rot through the years? Where are the fragrant flowers picked by the fingertips of our efforts? Where are the soft buns of flavorful romance from the ovens of our hearts? Love has gradually turned into the villain it never wanted to be. How did our hearts become capable of beating for two?
were no longer encountered by people, instead, they take the other way, the road to Cheating.
by Kristin Laura Lumapat
Cheating killed the beauty of Love. In our generation today, cheating seemed to be fun and alright. They thought the string between their partner was broken and their love was dead, and saving it was by breathing for another person. These actions were made normal in the society and the influence grows bigger and stronger. The obstacles inside the tunnel of Love
The sweet aroma of Love now rarely lingers under our noses. From stargazing together under the tree and talking about life and love and how their hearts beat for each other, to spending most of the time drowning on the sea of overthinking and fear of getting cheated on. It’s not as real as it was anymore, not genuine as it was before. It disgusts me, and I yearn for the most sincere love like how it was before. Love is dead, the people killed it.
Are you one of them?
Are you as cruel as them? Or do
love is NOT An
you miss the smell of love too? I don’t want to believe Love is dead, it could still be hiding somewhere safe from this barbaric world. It was once soft, could we save it from the arms of cruelty? Come find it with me and show the world the right and perfect taste of Love.
OPEN DOOR
by Sophia Kristel Samson
In the Disney classic, Frozen, Anna was not only wrong about marrying a man you just met, she was also wrong about one more thing — love is not an open door. In today’s reality, the sentiment behind those lyrics comes with a heavy dose of skepticism. The notion that love is an open door, where anyone can walk in and out freely, is challenged by the prevalence of cheating in the modern days.
Contrary to the lyrics, love is not open, but rather a closed, intimate, and exclusive bond shared by only
two people. This exclusivity is rooted in the commitment and trust that serve as the pillars of a relationship.
In today’s digital age, where temptations lurk behind every screen through different social media platforms and multiple dating apps, the temptation to stray away from commitment has become more prevalent than ever. Technology has made it easier for individuals to find connections outside their relationships. From physical affairs to emotional infidelity, the spectrum of
cheating is vast and varied. However, amidst the chaos of temptation and deceit, there remains a steadfast belief in the power of exclusivity in love. The idea that love should be reserved for one’s partner alone is a sentiment evident by those who value the depth and intimacy of a committed relationship. While the motion of love is an open door may sound appealing, perhaps it’s time to embrace the idea of love as a sacred space reserved merely for two souls. In a world where trust
is often betrayed and hearts are easily broken, it’s time to reassess our understanding of love and commitment.
So, as we navigate through icy castles and frozen hearts, let it be a reminder that love is not an open door but rather a precious gift to be cherished and protected. In a world where cheating is prevalent, let us be the guardians of our own hearts, ensuring that they remain closed to anyone who would seek to enter without permission.

I’ll Be Home For Christmas
by Sophia Kristel Samson
I’ll be home for Christmas
You can plan on me
Please have snow and mistletoe
And presents by the tree
Christmas eve will find me
Where the love light gleams
I’ll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams
As the years pass by, the essence of Christmas transforms, evolving alongside our changing perspectives. Childhood, adorned with simplicity and pure wonder, offered a time where a small chocolate or a simple toy ignited an endless blaze of joy within us. Back then, Christmas was a symphony of innocent contentment.
Yet, as the sands of time trickle through our fingers, the holiday season often dons a different hue. With the passage of years, our aspirations grow more elaborate, our desires more complex. The yearning for bigger, grander experiences replaces the simple delights that once sufficed.
This yearning echoes in the melodies and the nostalgic lyrics of “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.” The thing I look forward to this Christmas is home, not a physical place but a state of mind—a place where the heart feels light, where gratitude thrives, and where simplest pleasures evoke boundless delights.
Perhaps, amidst the trappings of adulthood, the true gift of the season lies in reconnecting with the child within us. It’s about embracing the marvels of a snowflake’s delicate dance, finding solace in the warmth of loved ones’ embraces, and reveling in the unassuming joy of the little things.
But amid the glimmering lights and the festive rush, a longing stirs within us—the yearning to reclaim the innocence of our youth. It’s a desire to feel the unadulterated joy of being a child again, where the essence of Christmas resided in the moments, not the material.
So, this Christmas, amidst the hustle and bustle, amidst the myriad of expectations, I aim to rekindle that childlike wonder. Let us unwrap the gift of simplicity, cherishing the small moments that breathe life into the season.

Marriage Intruder Alert: A
Marriage Intruder Alert: AMother-in-law’s
Meddle Ground
An unwanted gift is not a gift but a burden, and a mother-in-law’s unwanted interference in a couple’s decision-making process is no help but an intolerable intrusion.
“A car is like a mother-in-law— if you let it, it will rule your life.”
Jamie Lerner
It is imperative to understand that while some may appreciate unsolicited advice from an experienced and wise mother figure on parenthood and marriage, too much meddling and controlling behaviour can lead to disastrous consequences. Young couples need guidance but must also be allowed to make their own decisions. Mothers who overstep their bounds risk creating conflicts with their child’s spouse, resulting in a power struggle that may ultimately lead to the relationship breakdown.
When TV personalities Sarah Lahbati and Richard Gutierrez’s rumoured split spread on the internet, netizens were quick to speculate that the cause of their fallout may be Richard’s mother, Anabelle Rama. This sparked a heated debate about whether mothers-in-law should or should not be allowed to partake in their children’s marital decisions.
The writers of this paper strongly oppose the idea of mothers-in-law interfering in their children’s married lives. Such interference shows a lack of respect for their children’s independence and autonomy and can cause tension between the couple. In-laws must understand that they cannot dictate their children’s decisions or interfere in their private lives.
Autonomy and Independence
“Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”
- Genesis 2:24
In a religious context, married couples are expected to forsake their dependence on their parents and commit entirely to their spouse following God’s instructions. But, of course, forsaking dependence does not equal cutting ties with parents. As such, parents will still have that instinct to provide for and guide their children.
“Lots of mothers-in-law are great helpers. They loan money, run errands, and help with chores.”
- Susan Adcox
According to Thompson (2013), a mother-inlaw’s primary responsibility is to offer support, security, and relief to the newly married couple during the initial phase of their marriage. However, it is crucial to note that third-party intervention, including the involvement of in-laws, can lead to the further deterioration of the relationship (Widmer et al., 2009). The overly active participation of mothers-in-law in the marital decisions of their children can have a significant impact on the independence and autonomy of the couple. This can lead to the couple’s over-reliance on their mother-inlaw, which can prevent them from learning essential skills like communication and decision-making that are necessary for building a strong and happy family.
In an interview, a married couple of 18 years stated, “Dili man na maayo na mag salig gihapon sa imong mama nga minyo na. Minyo na pero sige gihapon og mama. If ang ginikanan sa imong bana mag sige og apil sa inyong desisyon, di mo kasabot og tarong sa imong bana. Mag lisod pud ka og istorya sa imong bana kay iya man laging mama imong kontra.”
Interference from a mother-in-law can impede spouses’ ability to communicate effectively. When outside forces predominate, it becomes difficult for the couple to communicate honestly and collaborate on solving problems. Couples that struggle with communication, according to Davin (2022), will usually experience unresolved conflicts, which makes managing stressors such as finances, sexual intimacy, children, and work more difficult. Furthermore, constant interference from mothers-in-law may hinder the couple’s ability to make independent decisions. If the mother-in-law is overly involved, the couple might feel pressured to align with her preferences, affecting their autonomy.
The mother-in-law and other family members may play a significant role in decision-making in some cultures, offering guidance based on their own experiences. Different cultures may appreciate a couple’s freedom to make their own decisions more than others. However, establishing clear boundaries is essential to maintaining a healthy balance between familial connections and the
independence of the couple. This entails setting clear expectations for what is and is not acceptable and adhering to them, even if it means turning down the in-laws.
Rising Tension
Family dynamics play a crucial role in any relationship, especially in the case of marriage. In marriage, the relationship with the in-laws is a cornerstone of marital harmony and overall family wellbeing, where it can either make or break a relationship.
“A bad in-law can ruin a good marriage.” - Anonymous
While the support and involvement of extended family can be a source of strength, meddlesome inlaws often contribute to tension within marriages or partnerships. According to a study by the law firm Slater and Gordon (2017), in-laws can be held responsible for divorce or tension between partners. Approximately 28% of the 2,000 people who participated in the study claimed that the relationship with their in-laws was so bad that they considered divorcing their partners, and one in ten couples went ahead and got divorced. This is because tension brought about by intruding in-laws causes emotional distress and erodes trust between couples.
A woman who lives with her in-laws with her husband and children explains, “Living together with your in-laws is difficult. They comment on almost everything you do, and it’s infuriating. My motherin-law also spoils my kids, which makes it hard for me to discipline them. Not to mention, they butt in whenever I scold and punish my kids. It stresses me out.” Constant battles and conflicts like these can evoke feelings of frustration, anxiety, and sadness.
Furthermore, partners may become emotionally apart as a result of in-law interference. Interference that one partner interprets as an absence of protection or support from the other may cause emotional distance and a general deterioration in trust. The couple may experience emotional distress as a result of these actions (Pace, 2023).
One or both parties may believe that their decisions and actions are being undercut by their mother-in-law’s meddling. The relationship’s general level of trust may be weakened by the perception that one’s spouse is unsupportive or untrustworthy. Openly expressing criticism, making judgments about choices, or disparaging the couple’s choices might make the couple feel inadequate and undermined.
The tension that arises between mothers-inlaw and married couples highlights how crucial it is to preserve sound limits in family relationships. While acknowledging the important role extended families may play, it’s also important to recognize that couples have the freedom to make decisions that impact their lives freely and without undue influence from outside sources as consenting adults.
To sum up, it is critical to respect and acknowledge couples’ liberty as willing adults. This autonomy may be seriously threatened by in-laws interfering in a couple’s relationship since this can result in excessive influence and undermine the couple’s capacity to make life-changing decisions. Maintaining a good balance between the couple’s independence and their ties to their families requires setting clear limits. Building a solid and peaceful partnership requires giving the couple the room to manage and grow their relationship without outside demands or meddling. Ultimately, the couple should choose together how much of a decision-making role a mother-in-law or any other family member should have, considering their individual cultural and familial backgrounds. It is vital to put the happiness and well-being of the marriage first, but it is also important to keep the family relationships intact.
It is crucial to understand that there is a clear distinction between helping and intruding. When
someone requires assistance, they will ask for it. If a couple chooses not to seek their parents’ aid, it is crucial that the parents refrain from interfering and trust that the knowledge they have imparted to their children will be enough for them to succeed in the tedious world of marriage.
“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

wouldn’t agree
Mother Knows Best, Disney PRINCESSES BUT wouldn’t agree
You have been training your children for independence since their birth. You have taught them how to cook, wash dishes, make beds, and make responsible decisions. Now they are married, and it is time to celebrate their independence. You must respect them as equals.”
In the enchanted realm of Disney fairytales, where dreams come alive and fairy tales unfold, even the brightest princesses couldn’t escape the clutches of malevolent maternal figures. Whether underwater or in grand castles, these iconic characters grapple with escaping the shadows of controlling mothers. These timeless stories tell of love and self-discovery, but they also reveal the dark side of motherly meddling.
As we journey through these animated tales, it prompts us to think about how this theme connects to real life. The thin line between maternal guidance and dictatorial influence, between genuine care and stifling control, extends beyond the animated kingdoms and parallels into the lives of those navigating the reality of something bigger — marriage. Just like the wicked stepmothers in Disney tales, overbearing mothers-in-law can cast a shadow on the marital bliss that couples strive to build. The question arises: Should motherin-laws take part in a couple’s decision making?
Our position firmly stands on the ground that while maternal figures play a crucial role in providing guidance and support, they should not overstep boundaries when it comes to a couple’s decision-making.
While maternal guidance is often valued in marital relationships, the manifestation of selfish desires, overbearing decision-making, and the crossing of boundaries by mothers-in-law can lead to strained relationships and, in extreme cases, contribute to the breakdown of marriages. To unravel this modern-day fairy tale, this paper will explore how the haunting specter of evil mothers in Disney narratives mirrors the potential pitfalls of overbearing mothers-in-law, and why we advocate for a boundary that preserves the sanctity of the couple’s independence.
“Mothers know best,” they say. But didn’t mother Gothel, the well-known character who said and sang those exact words, turn out to be the villain of her own foster daughter, Rapunzel’s, story due to her stifling behavior driven by her own selfish desires?
Similarly, real-life dynamics between mothersin-law and daughtersin-law can sometimes take a problematic turn, particularly in the realm of reproductive choices. Numerous mothers-inlaw abuse their “power” for their desire to have grandchildren, compelling their daughters-in-law to conceive. According to studies, mothers-inlaw actively expropriated reproductive power over their daughters-in-law through the former’s control in the family.
In this, the mother-inlaw communicated the importance of childbearing to their daughter-in-law, either directly or through their sons, reminded young brides of their childbearing role, probed her repeatedly to see if she was attempting to conceive or pregnant, and discouraged or prevented her from using contraception.
A testimony from BuzzFeed illustrated the extent to which some mothers-in-law intrude into the private sphere of their daughters-inlaw’s reproductive choices. “She
— Gary Chapman
didn’t respect that we didn’t want to have kids. When we got married, his mom kept pressuring us about having a kid even though we didn’t want one. We went on an extended vacation with her a couple of years after we got married. [...] During the vacation, I lost my birth control and couldn’t find it. When we were packing, I opened her drawer, and I found it in her room. I found crushed prenatal vitamins, and I found herbal fertility smoothies”
“Mothers only want what’s best for their child,” they say. But doesn’t the case of Lady Tremaine challenge this notion as she relinquishes control over decisions for Cinderella’s life, ultimately prioritizing her own interests rather than the genuine well-being of Cinderella?
This underscores the importance, especially in the context of marriage, of individuals within the relationship being the primary decision-makers, as external influences may not always align with their genuine best interests. In a study by Ganle et al., findings revealed that women often consider their mother-in-law as the primary authority in decisions. Due to this, 60% of mother/daughter-in-law relationships are strained, compared to only 15% of son/mother-in-law marriages. These strained relationships are described in a variety of negative adjectives, including “infuriating,” “depressing,” and “awful.” And when children are involved, the situation tends to worsen.
Real-life accounts, like the one shared by a user from The Washington Post, further illuminate the challenges of navigating maternal influence within the context of parenting. “I have talked to her about all this before. I explained that my husband and I made choices about how to raise our baby and the reasoning behind these choices. She listens attentively to my concerns but then forgets them by the next visit. [...] I spent a week with her recently and it was really tough with the constant criticism and blatant ignoring of our parenting choices,” said the anonymous user.
Gary Chapman, a senior associate pastor, conveyed the idea that parents and in-laws might offer advice on various aspects of your marital life, and it’s valuable to consider their suggestions. However, as a couple, it is crucial to independently make decisions. It is essential not to let parents manipulate you into agreeing on a choice that both of you do not endorse.
“You should always follow your mother’s words,” they say. But didn’t the cautionary tale of Merida underscore the importance of recognizing the delicate line between guidance and dictation, care and control, within maternal relationships for a successful establishment of boundaries?
Merida’s experience serves as a vivid illustration of the potential pitfalls that can arise when maternal guidance oversteps its bounds. The presence of a controlling mother-in-law can significantly impact the dynamics of a marriage, often leading to conflicts and tension within the familial relationship. According to a Parenting Website Netrums article, 1 in 4 daughters-in-law admit to despising their mother-in-law, citing issues of perceived control.
Real-life accounts, like the one shared by a Reddit user, further emphasize the challenges that arise when a mother-in-law oversteps boundaries. “I got mad at my mother-in-law because I feel like she is undermining my role as a mom, overstepping boundaries, making things confusing to my daughter, and just blatantly disrespectful.”
Chapman provides a valuable rule for parents advising their married children: “A good rule for parents wanting to advise their married children is that parents should give advice only when it’s requested. If your children have not requested your wisdom and you want to share it, at least ask permission.”
“Mothers would never want to put their children in a painful situation,” they say. But why is it that Queen Ingris became the catalyst for the conflict between Aurora and Prince Phillip, ultimately leading to a strain in their relationship?
This dynamic is not isolated to fairy tales, as studies reveal the impact of a mother-in-law’s intervention in a couple’s decision-making, often leading to significant consequences, including divorce. In a broader societal context, the link between troubled relations with mothers-in-law and marital problems has been explored. According to ArabNews, marital problems originate from troubled relations between wives and their mothers-in-law. At the same time, 3% of divorce cases were attributed to mothers-in-law.
In an Egyptian study, family interference emerged as a significant factor contributing to the breakdown of marriages, with familial opinions extending to influencing the selection of a spouse and even meddling in the everyday affairs of the couple. Furthermore, over-involvement of the family, particularly the mother-in-law, contributes greatly to the breakage of the marriage. This issue is not unique to Egypt, as evidenced by a Palestinian study where 200 divorce cases were presented in court, attributing the failure of marriages to the overbearing presence of mothers-in-law.
In conclusion, the captivating tales of Disney princesses shed light on the delicate balance between maternal guidance and overbearing control, a struggle that resonates far beyond the realms of animated kingdoms. The cautionary tales of characters like Rapunzel, Cinderella, Merida, and Aurora underscore the potential pitfalls of overbearing mothers, both in fairy tales and real-life marriages. The haunting tales of control and manipulation mirror the challenges faced by real-life couples grappling with meddling mothers-in-law.
In the grand narrative of marriage, the protagonists are the individuals bound by love, commitment, and shared dreams. External forces, even well-intentioned mothers-in-law, should respect the boundaries that safeguard this sacred union. As Gary Chapman wisely advises, “Parents should give advice only when it’s requested.”
In the end, the true magic lies in fostering understanding, open communication, and mutual respect between mothers-in-law and couples. Just as Disney princesses overcame the shadows of controlling mothers, real-life couples can script their own happily ever after by navigating the challenges together, hand in hand, and defining their journey on their own terms. After all, the most enchanting tales are those written by the hearts and hands of those who dare to dream, love, and decide for themselves.

At our era now, AI has grown to be very popular and has proven its purpose across the globe.
”Has AI become our slave? Or have we become its?
Easy, automated, fast. A paragon to AI is the famous Chat Generative Pretrained Transformer (ChatGPT), made available for public use on November 30, 2022. It is a site that creates essay length text responses according to the user’s desire from a few prompts. Another example is the student famous Quillbot released in 2017, having features of a rephraser, grammar checker, and writing enhancer.
Over-reliance on AI diminishes human influence. Claims suggest that not only are AI generated texts wordy and choppy, it is also bland and unnatural in tone. Moreover, recent controversies show AI in relative to plagiarism– outright copying works of mang artists without
proper credits, in the name of reference, while altering one to few elements.
For better or for worse, we already have AI. Though the technology has its hiccups, AI demonstrates many of the abilities designed to improve such as conversion of complex texts, and the construction of succinct arguments, made-easy and available to everyone with broadband access and an email address. Generated materials may never perfectly capture and replicate the essence of a vicarious human experience, hence it is a matter of how we utilize; and it is a quandary if we cease to act. Tale of Paradigms: AI Revolutionizes Prostate Cancer Treatments
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting the majority of men. According to Cancer Research UK, one in eight men are affected by prostate cancer, with around 52,000 cases every year in the UK alone.
However new discoveries reveal new data of a possible new form of aggressive prostate cancer. This could revolutionize how the disease is diagnosed and treated. Furthermore, what made these discoveries possible was the use of advanced artificial intelligence (AI).
This discovery was part of an international consortium called “The Pan Prostate Cancer Group” which aims to develop a genetic test that, when combined with current techniques or methods, may provide a more precise prognosis for each
by Bismarck Estorba
patient, and could ultimately lead to more tailored treatment decisions.
The researchers of this study used AI to study the changes on the DNA of prostate cancer samples from 159 patients. Surprisingly, it identified two distinct cancer groups.
Professor Colin Cooper from UEA’s Norwich Medical School highlights this discovery’s significance and commends the advancements of artificial intelligence. Discovering a new type of prostate cancer would not have been possible without AI, as the common knowledge initially thought that prostate cancer was just one type of disease.
Dr Rupal Mistry, the charity’s senior science engagement manager believes that this work published has the potential to make a difference to people affected by prostate cancer.
These results could be the beginning to being able to take the same ‘divide and conquer’ approach to prostate cancer that has worked in other diseases such as breast cancer. Dr. Naomi Elstwr Director of Research, Prostate Cancer Research
These findings are hoped to save thousands of lives in the future and may even help researchers working in other cancer fields to better understand other types of cancer.

Royal Intrusion: King Cobras Proliferate Cebu
Augmented concerns alarm residents with the increasing and incessant appearance of King Cobras across cebu in the course of early 2024.
Scientifically known as Ophiophagus hannah, and locally known as “Banakon”, the King Cobra is an impressively venomous reptile autochthonous to Asia. King cobras are easily distinguished with their large black edged scales, small rounded nead, and a pair of fangs at the upper jaw. Owing to the hollow characteristic of their fangs, their venom travel deftly to their prey. Like any other snake, the venom invades the prey’s nervous rystem, causing paralysis and loss of muscle function, which could possibly lead to death.
According to the Department of Health (DOH) in Central Visayas, the sudden proliferation of King Cobras come down to there main causes: El Nino, climate change, and human interference. Many scientists conjectured that the intense temperature, below normal rainfall, and fluctuating weather patterns have pushed the escalated appearance of king cobras as these reptiles are specifically sensitive to temperature changes. Moreover, human interference causes the displacement of their habitats, hence prompting them to migrate, often reaching human-settled populations. With loss of native habitat, they seek sustenance and refuge.
Too Much of a Good Thing: Encompassing
Cobra’s mating season runs from January to April, suggesting their need to travel and reproduce, and thus their arrival at urban areas.
While King Cobras are known to have toxic venoms, they are less likely to be aggressive unless provoked. Experts claim that King Cobras usually avoid humans but are vigilant and will readily attack once disturbend. Even being considered as a formidable predator to other species, their biggest predators are humans.
Unsettling as it sounds, a tropical island like Cebu houses various kinds of snakes, including the King Cobra. King Cobras have long inhibited in Cebu. However, recent urge of their appearance spike controversy and heightened concern.
Battleground Paradox: Panacea or a High Value Target?
by Kaye Martha Yasto
They say the future of the country is carried at the back of our military forces, but imagine the actual weight and load of ammunition and essentials’ heavy tonnage burdened upon them. Paradigm after paradigm, recent technological developments have demonstrated the mobile nuclear power reactors supply safe, dependable, and deployable operational power for varied use. Although having proved its potential in mobility, a question emerges: Is the innovation a breakthrough or will it only inaugurate vulnerabilities deftly exploited by adversaries?
Nuclear reactors are the heart of sustainable energy, owing to its dense energy produce. Mobile nuclear power reactors, in a sense, are just conventionally smaller and peripatetic in nature. They contain and control nuclear chain reactions that produce heat for energy production through a process called fission– when a neutron collides with a bigger atom, triggering it to excite and split into a pair of smaller ones. Advances were initially crafted for space voyages, and are now serving as the foundation that underlies the design of mobile nuclear power reactors.

During the pre-antibiotic era,
10% 90%
of the children died of meningitis were left with lasting disabilities
From strep throat to urinary track infections, antibiotics have always been our rife onecall friend. As an antimicrobial substance, they are active against a wide range of harmful bacteria, killing or inhibiting their growth.
In the pre-antibiotic era, 90% of the children died of meningitis, while the remaining 10% were left with lasting disabilities. Through time, age, and experience, antibiotics singlehandedly eased human pain and downright extended 23 years of human existence.
Based on the primary ways that antibiotics affect microbial cells, they can be classified as either bactericidal or bacteriostatic. Bactericidal antibiotics, such as penicillin– the first organic antibiotic, kills the bacteria in a manner that interferes the structure of its cell wall, or the content itself. Bacteriostatic antibiotics, on the other hand, subdues the growth of bacteria, keeping them in the stationary phase of growth.
Ideally, antibiotics are only used for more severe bacterial infections because most illnesses resolve on their own. The immune system can predominantly eliminate bacteria before they have a chance to grow and manifest symptoms. When noxious bacteria are attacked by white blood cells (WBCs), the immune system can typically handle the outbreak of infection and prevent symptoms from emerging. But occasionally, there are too many dangerous bacteria, and the body is unable to eradicate them all. In
this case, antibiotics are necessary.
Picture this: You are having sniffles and nasal congestion. The school is passing around a common cold and now you have it. Although it has always been an instinct to automatically rush for antibiotics, it is an important factor also to consider when they are not needed. Common misconceptions reveal antibiotics as a widespread nostrum. However, antibiotics are only effective on pathogens sensitive to them– bacteria. Antibiotics serve no inherent purpose on viral infections that are caused by viruses such as the flu or covid 19.
Fatal cases alarm globally with the prevalence of antibiotic resistance– when bacterias develop the ability to defeat the drugs designed to kill them due to misuse of antibiotics. Bacterial diseases that were formerly easily treated are becoming incurable after just eight decades of antibiotic use, as antimicrobial resistance keeps rising and the pipeline for new antibiotic research is waning, with a continued rise threatening the comeback of the pre-antibiotic era.
History preceding the other, Penicillin was formerly referred regarded be a “miracle drug” for good reason. The current generation is felicitous to have access to antibiotics, thus the need for a driven effort to not let the developments of forefathers to forefathers be a waste. It is up to us to be a beacon for advancement, because these so called “treasures” are not merely just a dyspepsia of belief down our throats.
In order to meet increasing demands in the forces, a safe, compact, and transportable nuclear rector would provide a reliable, carbon-free energy source that wouldn’t increase the need for fuel while enabling mission-critical operations in austere settings. They also generally generate more fuel than they use. Furthermore, gun-type fission weapons have also been adapted through this technology with their structures that assemble their fissile material into supercritical mass, and nuclear powered drones in an epoch of air and ground warfare.
Critiques call for concern that an attack could entomb the reactor and result in a ruthless quagmire. Fortunately, unlike nuclear weapons that contain elements in particular configurations, nuclear reactors contain otherwise, hence lead many studies to conclude that it is improbable for such reactors to explode.
Just as logistics and command lines entail the sovereignty in the forces, mobile nuclear power reactors represent such axiom to modern advancements. It is not an exaggeration, but a paradox that something so little could revolutionize the 21st century.
Should one encounter a King Cobra, the experts share a unanimous advice: Leave the snake alone. Slowly and calmly move away from the snake while keeping an eye on on its location, as much as possible. “

The Advent and Foundation of Beauty and Cosmetics
by Lhea Marie Castro
Throughout history, cosmetics and beauty products have been an essential part of the development of the societal norms, cultural identities, as well as individual impressions of self-worth. Cosmetic devices were not nearly a means of improving physical appearance, but also strongly influenced by religious belief, societal status, and healing practices during the old civilizations. We discover a story that transcends time and culture as we explore the labyrinthine history of cosmetics and beauty care.
The story of cosmetics and beauty care is a tale as old as humanity itself. Since the dawn of civilization humans have sought to enhance their appearance, and cultivate the rituals and products that promote self-care and beauty. The journey of beauty care is an intricate tapestry woven across cultures and millennia, encompassing ancient remedies, royal beauty standards, industrial advancements, and a modern focus and holistic well-being.
From ancient rituals to modern innovations, the pursuit of beauty has been a constant companion to human civilizations, evolving alongside our shifting perception of self love, diversity, and well-being.
Beauty icons such as Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn showcase glamorous looks that captivated audiences worldwide, driving demand for cosmetics and beauty products. New formations, such as foundations, lipsticks and mascaras, have also been developed in this era that radically changed the way individuals enhance their features.
As we face the complexities of beauty and cosmetics in 21stcentury, there is an increasing sense that their impact on society goes much further than bodily appearance, covering issues such as identity, empowerment, or challenging standards for accepting self expression.
The birth of cosmetics and beauty care is not nearly a historical account, but a testament to the enduring human desire for self expression, self-care, and the celebration of individual beauty. As we marvel at the diverse array of beauty products, and rituals available today, we are witnessing the culmination of centuries of innovation, tradition, and the unwavering request for beauty.
Story in Numbers: Statistics on COVID-related LIFEEXPECTANCY
by Kaye Martha Yasto
Heightened Covid-19 breakouts alarm worldwide with the decline of life expectancy by 1.6 years during the pandemic’s first two years, highlighting a macro-scaled gyration of the long-running rise in global life expectancy for over a decade, according to the data of the US-based Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME).
n just an instant, Covid-19 forced the world to a halt. Covid was characterized by a virus that is deftly contagious, which attacks and inhibits both the immune system and the respiratory system. Owing to its rapid increase, Covid-linked deaths spiked, which made this pandemic responsible for 15.9 million excess deaths during its run on 2020-2021, the researchers estimated. That is a million excess deaths higher as compared to the World Health Organization’s previous estimation. Excess deaths are calculated by comparing the total number of deaths with how many would have been expected, had there not been a pandemic. Countries like Barbados, New Zealand and Antigua and Barboda house the lowest rate of excess deaths during the pandemic. With less external contact, this suggests how isolated islands were often minimally affected than the rest of the world.
Moreover, the study linked a country’s economic capacity to its population, showing it to be indirectly proportional. Populations of many capable and well-off countries have started to decrease, while it continues to grow otherwise in less wealthy countries.
Austin Schumacher, an IHME researcher and lead of the study, claims this pandemic to have a more profound impact than any event seen in half a century, including conflicts and natural disasters, Date shows that during 20202021, a dramatic fall of 84 percent affects life expectancy across 204 countries and territories, with Mexico City, Peru, and Bolivia declining the most. The death rate for people over 15 rose by 22 percent for men and 17 percent for women.
On a little brighter side, from the updated estimates of the lHME land mark on Global Burden of Disease study, half a million fewer children under the age of five died in 2022 compared to 2019. That means a continuum in long-term decline in child mortality.
Despite the disruptions and setbacks of the pandemic, our life expectancy is still far more than it used to be. Researchers stated that between 1950 and 2021, the life expectancy at birth grew from 49 to 72, rising by 23 years. These statistics tell a story that while trying to leave a mark in the pandemic, it left a mark on us. Hence, bringing Schumacher to conjecture the potential impacts of new viruses, while number of researchers warn to focus in the next pandemic.
