Hocking Hills is a state park in Ohio that was established in 1926. Currently the park has very little branding and with many other state parks surrounding Hocking Hills, it is difficult to differentiate one from the other. The focus for this project was to eliminate the confusion and create a unique brand that would help visitors to identify the park. Elements for the project include a logo, wayfinding system, advertisements, and merchandise.

THE DESIGN MUSEUM

The goal for this project was to create an app and website that was user friendly and easy to navigate. The app and website allows the user to see featured exhibits, archives, contact information, and the museum’s history. The red was used as the main color throughout to attract the user and to establish a cohesive brand. Items made for the Design Museums are the logo, app, website, billboard advertisement, and book cover.

DAHLIA SCARVES

Dahlia Scarves is a brand that took the challenge of designing a package that would help it stand out from the competition. Instead of the scarf being placed on a hanger for display, Dahlia presents its products in a box with a die cut on the side so the viewer can see the pattern and feel the material. The box is adorned with a unique twist-to-open top that represents a Dahlia flower. The package contains the scarf and an informative tri fold that shows three different ways the scarf can be tied. Components for this project include a logo, packaging, and a tri fold instruction manual with original illustrations.

HOBBY LOBBY

Hobby Lobby is a popular arts and crafts store located in the United States. The decision to rebrand the store was to update the company’s appearance and attract a younger audience. The interior and exterior of the building is redesigned using recycled materials such as bricks, wood, and large warehouse windows at the entrance. The idea is to brighten the space and give it some life. The logo is also rebranded, but still consists of the company’s original colors and a similar typeface. The interior of the store includes aisle signage to improve the shopper’s experience and a discount signage that is on brand with Hobby Lobby.

The Washington D.C. three-day travel brochure project was created around the needs of a single user. The brochure was designed so the user could have it as a keepsake after their trip ends. The whole product consists of an external box that holds three books containing the itinerary for each day. Having individual books allows the user to only carry the book they need for that day. Inside the books is a breakdown of the days activities as well as a map that will help the user navigate their trip.

UNKNOWN ARTIST

George Cosby is a relatively unknown singer/songwriter from London, England. A typographic logo was designed to brand him and provide visuals for albums, posters, and merchandise. The song All of Your Love is the inspiration for the album cover that was designed to look like a blood moon. It was built using transparency paper, paint, and a lamp. The work contains a vinyl album cover, CD cover, tickets and three promotional posters.

This animal testing awareness campaign was created to educate the public about the brutality of product testing on animals. The decision was made to move away from highlighting the issue with graphic images of distressed animals. Instead they are shown as icons to represent that these animals are not seen as living creatures, but objects that are used to be tortured and discarded. The yellow was chosen to grab the attention of the viewer as they are reading a magazine or passing an advertisement. Each component is accompanied with facts that support the visual and a call to action. The campaign consists of magazine advertisements, outdoor advertisements that include facts that are unique to the city they are displayed in, and an animated web banner advertisement.

TEMPOR ARY ASSISTANCE GURU

Temporary Assistance Guru (TAG) is an app that pairs temp agencies with hiring employers. The app is broken down into two sections, one for the temp agency and the other for the hiring agency. A profile is created and depending on which section of the app is utilized, they can either offer their temp services or detail their hiring needs. The users can manage their schedules by viewing previous, current, or upcoming jobs. TAG also allows the users to message each other through the app and look at profiles. The product is made to be used through the app, but it does have a corresponding website that offers the same features.

FINE ART COLLECTIONS

A collection of three projects showcasing various fine art mediums. These projects offer a handmade, one of a kind finished product that can also be used for graphic design. This is a look at how fine arts and graphic design can work together to create compelling pieces for multiple uses. The mediums used in these projects are monoprinting, book binding, screen printing, and copper plate etching.

MONOPRINTING “We live in fact, in a world starved for solitude, silence, and private: and therefore starved for meditation and true friendship

-C.S. Lewis

The quote was chosen as the inspiration for this project. The finished product was created using monoprinting and collage materials to visually display the essence of the quote. The process consisted of using ink on a plexiglass plate and running it through a printing press. Layers of tissue paper and other printed pieces were then applied and continuously passed through the press to complete each panel.

BOOKBINDING

Perfect bound books are made by using adhesive on the edge of the pages (referred to as the paper block) to hold them together. The cover of the book is constructed of heavy paper board wrapped with canvas. The book is assembled using endpapers that are glued to the inside covers and then attached to the paper block. This creates a hinge so the book can open and close. The Coptic sewn book is made using signatures, which are four pages folded into one another, that were all individually cut to size. They were then stitched to together and sewn to the wooden cover, which allows the book to open completely flat. The wooden cover was cut, drilled, stained, and decorated around the edge using a wood burning tool.

SCREEN PRINTING

The purpose was to create a collection of products such as a standard card, postcard, and magnet that model souvenirs found in shops. The landscape of the New Mexico mountains were originally carved into a copper plate and then printed by inking and sending them through a printing press. The image was then burned into a silk screen that was then screen printed onto paper. All of the other details (borders, fonts, etc.) were burned into the screen, registered and printed over several layers on the same paper.
