Ukrainian and Belarusian folk holiday is called Malanka. Traditionally, carollers went from house to house on this special evening, playing pranks or often performing a small play. Typically, a bachelor dressed in women’s clothing would lead the troop. In Camrose, Saturday, January 14, Camrose Veselka Ukrainian Dance Society will present a Malanka Ukrainian New Year’s Celebration at CRE. Thirty minutes after the doors open, upwards of thirty Ukrainian dancers in wonderful, colorful costumes will take to the stage. A dinner which includes your favourite Ukrainian dishes will follow at 6:30 p.m. The Polka Ramblers will provide live dancing music following the feast. Although ticket sales have easily outpaced last year's, some remain. Stop by Shuman Insurance or call Chris at 780-672-5522 or 780-672-1168 to get yours before they're gone!

Watershed management By Dan Jensen

The Battle River Watershed Alliance will be hosting a d rought and watershed management workshop at the Forestburg Community Centre Feb. 29. "The workshop will provide an opportunity for watershed residents, stakeholders and municipalities to hear back on what we heard during our community workshops in November and to learn more about what we are doing with regards to drought management planning in our watersheds," explained Battle River Watershed Alliance watershed planning coordinator Sarah Skinner. The workshop will also help prioritize areas to be addressed in the Battle River Watershed Alliance's watershed management planning process. Workshop speaker David Sauchyn will talk about his research on climate change. The workshop is free but pre-registration is appreciated. "We encourage people to contact the Battle River Watershed Alliance office at 780-672-2076 or email me at sarah@battleriverwatershed.ca," said Skinner.

Crowd favourites to launch Big Valley Jamboree By Murray Green

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has played at the Big Valley Jamboree before. In fact, this will be appearance number four. They have even started the party by entertaining at the kick-off concert several years ago. Like fine wine, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has aged gracefully and hasn't lost its appeal to music fans everywhere. The band originally formed in Southern California during the spring of 1966. Now, 45 years later they are still going strong and are in demand for encore concerts. The first single "Buy for Me the Rain" hit the top 40 in 1967 and the classic "Mr. Bojangles" rocketed the band into super stardom in 1970. Other hits include "Fishin' in the Dark" and "I Saw the Light." The second live

album was recorded in Red Deer to celebrate 25 years in 1991. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band appeared at BVJ in 1993, 1994 and 1996. It will play at the Aug. 2 kick-off party at the Camrose Regional Exhibition grounds. Friday

The last time Blake Shelton was in Camrose (2007), he was vaulting up the charts and making a n ame for himself in the music industry. This time, he heads to the BVJ main stage after a big win at the 2011 Country Music Association Awards. Shelton received the male vocalist honour for the second straight year. He has had 10 number one hits, including "Austin" and "Honey Bee." Blake is m arried to Miranda Lambert, who also played at BVJ in the past.

Saturday

Toby Keith left a lot of disappointed fans at last year's edition of BVJ when he couldn't close out the event. Laryngitis kept him from performing, but he vows to make it up to Camrose this summer. “It was a v ery hard thing not to go on stage for all my fans” said Keith. “I am really happy to be returning to this amazing festival and can’t wait to be a part of the celebration.” Keith was named Artist of the Decade by the CMA and local music fans are eager to receive another chance to see him live here again. "Anybody can have a good decade, huh?" he asked. "I've had a great decade and I hope I have another one." He has made 13 albums and hits include "I wanna Talk About Me" and "Beer for My Horses."

He first appeared in Camrose in 1996. Sunday

The Eli Young Band, four musicians who met during their college days in Texas, is now 11 years into a go od career. They will open for Rascal Flatts. The group blends rock with country in the same fashion that made Tom Petty and the Eagles famous. The album, Jet Black and Jealous, debuted at No. 5 o n the Billboard Country Albums chart in 2008 even though the group had never made the Top 10 through radio play at that point in its career. It was nominated by the Academy of Country Music for Top New Vocal Group of the Year. Rascal Flatts

The Rascal Flatts band has

become one of the most honoured acts in country music history, reaching heights and achieving milestones reserved for the elite. Number one songs include "Bless the Broken Road" and "What Hurts the Most." Last year, the band received video of the year and lifetime achievement awards. Activities

At BVJ, the fun starts the moment you go t hrough the gates. From bull riding to the songwriters' workshop, there is something for everyone. More artists will be named to fill out the main stage lineup soon. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster. Tickets remain at the early discount rate until Jan. 31. The price will increase on Feb. 1 a nd again on June 1 to encourage early sales.

Bull Congress a sell-out By Dan Jensen

The Canadian Bull Congress will begin year number 26 the same way it finished year 25. "We're going to have another sellout," said Canadian Bull Congress committee chair Steve Kushnerik. "All the barns and show areas are full." The Canadian Bull Congress has grown into one of Alberta's premiere cattle marketing events with an average annual attendance of 7,500. "It provides producers with an excellent opportunity to showcase our world-class breeding stocks and genetics," said Jack Hayden, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development. Education component

The Congress will begin Jan. 19 with a Camrose County Day featuring education programs for approximately 200 students from 9:30 to 2:00 and an exhibitors' social from 6:30 to 9:30. "The 2012 Congress will have a few more hands-on activities with the kids," said Kushnerik. "They'll be able to do the things like they have done before, like painting a cow, but they will also be able to learn how the tagging system works." The students will also be able to see a model cow displayed by the Camrose Veterinary Clinic in conjunction with the University of Calgary. "It's important that these kids get a hands-on experience," said Kushnerik. "School-aged children learn the value of farm life, what it takes to raise an animal, farm safety, and the list goes on. They are our future and if we can instill the importance of agriculture then our job is done." The popular 4-H program on Jan. 21 will provide information on judging animals and animal welfare. "We always have a good turnout of 4-H kids," said Kushnerik. "We have sessions designed for 4-H members who have little or no judging experience, 4-H members with some judging experience and 4-H members who are experienced judges." Shows

The Canadian Bull Congress

shows on Jan. 20 and 21 will follow much the same format as in previous years, with categories for pen of three purebred heifers, pen of three commercial heifers, single bulls, 4-H heifers, pen of three bulls and single purebred heifers, as well as a herd bull walk. The RBC Marketing Award will be presented in the show ring at approximately 2:00 p.m. Jan. 21. "We give producers the chance to market their cattle in the stalls but also encourage producers to showcase their livestock in the ring," states an official Canadian Bull Congress brochure. "The Canadian Bull Congress offers the opportunity to market by private treaty." The Bull-Nanza draw for a grand prize bull worth $7,500 will be held the afternoon of Jan. 21. Tickets may be purchased at the show or by calling the CRE at 780-672-3640. The Canadian Bull Congress trade show will give vendors opportunities to expose their products and make connections to their target market. "Half of the vendors who will be attending the Congress this year are new," said Kushnerik.

Steak Challenge and Taste of Beef

The Canadian Bull Congress Steak Challenge and Taste of Beef Banquet will get underway at 6:00 p.m. Jan. 20. The banquet has had an attendance of more than 600 for the past few years and is usually sold out weeks in advance. The guest entertainer at this year's banquet will be Derek Edwards. Camrose Regional Exhibition and the Canadian Bull Congress organizing committee typically begin planning for the Congress as soon as the last one ends. "We utilize all the facilities at the CRE," said CRE major events and international agricultural marketing manager Marilyn Lee. "It takes a l ot of preplanning to juggle all the event components to accommodate everything within the facilities."

Canadian Bull Congress attracts national and international attention

John Chomiak, of Chomiak Charolais, said the Canadian Bull Congress, in addition to attracting local cattle people, attracts attention on the national and international scale. "This exposure is vital to our business and besides, this event is compacted to approximately three days, which makes it so much more desirable to participate in. We are always anxious to be involved, as this event has expanded our marketing network." Paul Nigh, beef industry specialist with Pfizer Animal Health, said the Canadian Bull Congress allows Pfizer to showcase its products and services to some of the most progressive cattle producers in the world. "Our customers, both present and future, attend this event, making our decision to be involved very simple." Hayden said the Canadian Bull Congress is the perfect opportunity for various players of the agricultural sector to network and share innovative ideas. "For over a quarter of a century the Canadian Bull Congress has continued its commitment to the cattle industry and has provided those within the industry opportunities to build partnerships and learn about industry development."

"Our customers, both present and future, attend this event, making our decision to be involved very simple."

TERESA FRIEND WINS STAMP AROUND PROMOTION

Teresa Friend, of Rosalind, won the grand prize of $1,500 in Downtown Dollars in the popular Stamp Around City Center Camrose promotion. Shoppers in downtown Camrose were given Stamp Around ballots in the months of November and December on which they were able to collect one stamp for every $10 spent. Once they had collected ten stamps they were able to enter the ballot into a draw for one of seven weekly prizes of a $100 gift certificate, or the grand prize of $1,500. Three separate bonus prize draws were also held for an overnight stay in a jacuzzi room at the soon-to-open Camrose Resort Casino Hotel. A total of sixty downtown businesses participated in the promotion. Presenting the Downtown Dollars to Teresa (second from left) were City Center Camrose treasurer Paul Pedersen (wearing the Christmas hat), City Center Camrose manager Carole-May Coty and the Camrose Booster sales manager Ron Pilger.

PEN POINTS by Berdie Fowler

Knowing consequences changes views At the beginning of 2011, a h ockey story dominated the sports news. It was about promising star player Sidney Crosby’s double concussions which subsequently kept him off the ice for the rest of the season, left him unready to play when the 2011-2012 season opened and, to this day, an uncertain future because of physical brutality allowed – even claimed by some to be essential – in the game. One year later, in January 2012, hockey was again the dominant sports story with the World Junior Championship being staged in Alberta. In spite of that major event, television and newspapers were, at the same time, carrying stories about Crosby concussions and violence in hockey. We refer to Peter Manbridge’s One on One interview with mild-mannered, former famous hockey goalie Ken Dryden; and the Edmonton Journal front page item (Dec. 20/11, by Sheila Dabu Nanato) citing an editorial in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) entitled Stop the Violence and Play Hockey, which says “fighting and other deliberate hits to the head in hockey should be banned because research has shown how brain and head trauma causes progressive damage.” This was good news to me, an ardent opponent of violent behavior anywhere at anytime, and one who is abhorred by the thought of being entertained by it. I f ind it encouraging that hockey violence and resulting injury is still being discussed. I am more hopeful now because, over the past year, some very influential people in the hockey world have become outspoken advocates of changing the rules. In addition to Dryden, these include Mario Lemieux, former hockey great and Hall of Famer, and Colin Campbell, League disciplinarian, and Emile Therein, former president of Canada Safety Council. Dryden has pointed out that times have changed and so has our understanding of the human body. We used to do a lot of stupid things without knowing the consequences, he says, but now we do know the consequences of concussion and we therefore need to rethink how we play hockey. He noted past adjustments, such as the mandatory use of helmets and facial masks for goalies, that had been born out of concern for player safety. Minor hockey enrollment has been affected by injuries. Recently released is a report that Hockey Canada teams now have 572,000 youngsters enrolled, which is down 200,000 from its peak. A joint study by University of Calgary, McGill University and University of Laval revealed that 11- and 12-year-old hockey players in leagues that allow body checking were 3.5 times more likely to suffer a concussion. University of Calgary researcher Dr. Carolyn Emery estimates that a ba n on body checking in Peewee hockey would eliminate over 1,000 injuries and 400 concussions per year among 9,000 Peewees in Alberta. It is timely to ask if anything is really changing. I am hopeful that because we now know more about the consequences of concussion, we will be influenced by the above esteemed proponents of change. I am also encouraged by the fact that some parents are now expressing their disapproval of hockey behavior that puts their youngsters at serious risk. On the other hand, I a m discouraged by recent quotes from World Junior Championship fans who said, “There’s nothing better than hitting another guy. It’s a great way to get out aggression.” Comments like that discourage me because hockey is big business and fans will be served what they are perceived to want. I conclude with the logical appeal of the Canadian Medical Journal’s editor-in-chief, Dr. Rajendra Kale: “How many brains should researchers have to slice up to convince NHL players that they are at risk of permanent and progressive brain damage? Should we not stop the violence now and get on with the main objective of hockey, which is scoring goals?”

Before the last election they brought forth a p roposal to hold fixed election dates. Not long after, following a series of nasty negative ads against other parties, their ratings improved to the extent that it appeared they could win a majority government, so t hey conveniently ignored their commitment to fixed election dates. A portent for the future? Soon after their election they rushed through a bill to drastically disable the Canadian Wheat Board, making it basically inoperable. In their haste they neglected to consult with grain growers through a plebiscite, as the law of the land requires. A rather ironic approach by a "Law and Order" party. The Harper Conservatives and, before them, the Reform Party, have always had Senate reform as a major plank in their platform. They want an elected Senate, not an appointed one. But after emasculating the Wheat Board, they fired the democratically elected farmers on the Board and promoted their own appointees on the Board. A very interesting approach but one that lays bare their democratic values. Donald Thompson, Rosalind Dear Editor: The federal election of 2011 and the resulting dictatorial effect on the Canadian Wheat Board left many unanswered questions. Our government wants to return control of grain marketing from farmers to the

grain companies, as it was in the early 1900s. It allowed grain companies to make more money at the expense of farmers. It makes one wonder how much money the grain companies put into the Conservative election campaign. Also how much kick back will there be to certain politicians if they are successful in helping the grain companies make more money? We must remember that grain companies have to satisfy their investors. Some members of our federal government profess to be Christians. As such you would expect them to treat Canadian citizens with honesty and respect. This definitely has not been the case with farmers and the CWB issue. Speaking of honesty, the Conservatives' barley plebiscite held in March of 2007 was designed so the government could manipulate to get the answer they wanted. It makes one think they are just Sunday Christians. If any citizen is going to do anything that they think may not be perfectly legal they should consult their Conservative MP. A federal judge has already ruled they have broken the law with their CWB legislation so they should be able to give good advice. Sincerely, George A. Calvin, New Norway Dear Editor: It is the responsibility of the community to regulate life through enacting laws and to educate its young people to prepare them for life's experiences, and also so that they can govern, earn a l iving and make new discoveries to further our civilization, etc. To do this in a regulated way the community elects a sc hool board to carry out the intents of the community. The board's primary duty is the education of the young people and the upkeep of the schools, but it is answerable to the community and the schools should be available to community groups for use in other than classroom hours at a reasonable rate.

The Rose City Square Dance Club has been dancing weekly at the Sparling School since 1980 at a negotiated rate every year for a year in advance. So the rate for the 2011-12 season was set in the spring of 2011. In the fall of 2011 the club was told the rate for the 2012-13 season would be $35 per hour. The school is used once a week for four hours so the charge would be $140 per dance. Square dancing is a re cognized healthy physical activity for the benefit of the participants and the community in general. As square dancers we have done entertainments at several seniors' lodges, have given instruction in school phys ed classes, and had public square dancers on floats in parades. We are a n on profit organization and cannot afford a charge that high. We met with two of the Battle River School Division administrators and were told that was a competitive rate. We would have liked to have met with the board as they are the body that sets policy. The administrators are there to carry out the policies developed by the board; they can advise the board but not tell the board to rubber stamp their ideas. We have talked to two of the school board members and they were not aware of how the rate changes would affect community use of the school facilities. These new rates were intended to make more money for the school board, but all it is going to do is stifle the after hours use to the point that they will not have any classroom use and no extra income. The Tae Kwon-Do group has already had to move from the Charlie Killam School to a different location, and the Rose City Square Dance Club is looking at a different facility for the next season. If your group has had a similar experience we would be glad to hear from you. Phone John at 403-883-2501 or Bernie at 780672-6976. Bernie von Tettenborn, vice president, Rose City Square Dance Club

25 Years!

It’s hard to believe it’s been…

1987

GLOVER

TRUCKS

is celebrating a

Quarter Century in Camrose! In January, 1987 Glover International Trucks (initially known as Camrose Truck Centre) opened for business in Camrose. The beginnings were comparatively humble compared to today’s operation. Back then, three mechanics and a service manager, two people in parts, a manager and a secretary. We operated out of a small business condominium on 41st Street, in the industrial area of south-east Camrose. As our reputation grew, so did our need for additional quality people and more space. In 1991 we built a new showroom and service centre on 39th Street , our present location. Coinciding with this expansion came a change in name to Camrose International Trucks. In 1996 we acquired

neighboring land in anticipation of further growth in the years or decades ahead. In 2000, Brad Glover took over the operation from his father Al. At this time the name of the company changed to Glover International Trucks. At present, we employ a staff of 25 people! Three people from the 1987 operation remain with Glover International Trucks. Dennis Herbach, our original service manager now works out of the Red Deer location. Original parts manager, Brian Ridley, continues serving clients with his vast parts expertise at the Airdrie store. Kevin Hycha, a mechanic back in 1987, continues to work from the Camrose branch, but now as general manager of Camrose and

Drumheller stores. He also wears the hat of service director for all six Glover locations. Over the last quarter century and continuing today, we have been very fortunate to have some of the industry’s very best talent serving and working for our valued client base. From technicians, through our parts counter, from our accounting office and our sales department, we are proud of the work done for our customers. With 25 years of growth, progress and success behind us, and expectations of being your source for full trucking/transportation needs for many decades to come – we take this opportunity to…

Etiquette for second time brides Many wonder what is proper wedding etiquette for an encore marriage. Actually, no rules are set in stone. It is up to the couple to plan a ceremony and reception that fits their needs and comfort levels. While some couples choose

to elope or have a v ery intimate affair, others treat themselves to an elaborate affair, even inviting their children to participate in the ceremony. A second-time bride may choose to be “given away” by a

father, brother or friend. It is perfectly acceptable for her to walk down the aisle solo. The bride and groom can host their own affair, but parents on either side may choose to financially contribute.

Roles of members of the bridal party After all the months of hectic planning, a bride can count on the help of her bridal party to keep her calm and collected on her wedding day. In many cases, brides will choose a close female friend or family member as her maid of honour. Generally, the bridesmaids assist the maid of honour and organize a reception or wedding shower for the bride before the wedding. When it comes to dressing the bridal party, the options are

virtually endless. The range of dress styles is just as vast. Elegantly draped dresses with asymmetric cuts and plunging necklines are found in many bridal boutiques today. The flower girl represents a miniature version of the bride and is u sually dressed all in white. The style of her dress should be similar to that of the bride. The top choices for flower girls today are bodices with or

without sleeves paired with a somewhat full skirt. The ring bearer adds a charming touch to a wedding ceremony by simply walking down the aisle decked out like a miniature version of the groom, while holding the wedding rings. Naturally, the mothers on both sides must also fulfill their roles by providing words of wisdom and helping to plan the celebration.

reception hall (decorations, head table, wedding cake, etc.), the bride and groom’s entrance into the reception hall, the reception line, the wedding party seated at the head table, the raising of the glasses for toasts, the bride and groom drinking from each other’s glasses, the musicians (if there are any), the first dance, the guests dancing, the throwing of the bouquet and the garter belt, and finally, upon leaving the party.

The theme for the 2012 observance is We Will All Be Changed by t he Victory of Our Lord Jesus Christ (cf. 1 Corinthians 15: 51-58). The theme and text for each year's observance of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity are chosen and prepared by representatives of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and representatives of the World Council of Churches. The Camrose service is sponsored by the Camrose and District Ministerial Association. The public is cordially invited.

TERRY

Terry was raised with love and compassion, but rebelled when he found “sex, drugs and r ock ’n’ roll”. During that terrible time, his par ents prayed and never gave up on him. Then in 1993, T erry was in trouble – dealing drugs and without hope. T erry was despondent and put a gun in his mouth to end it all. It was at this point he was “gloriously” changed. Since then there have been ups and downs in his life, but today Terry is a changed man and boldly proclaims “Jesus Christ as his Lor d and Saviour”. Come to the meeting and hear the r est of the story!

Camrose and area residents will have a couple of opportunities to experience Beautiful Winter in Battle River Country Jan. 20. The first will come during the noon hour at Cathel Books (5017-50 Street, Camrose), where Stan Spence will present stories and poetry on themes of family, teachers, country creatures and oilfield experiences in Battle River Country (focusing on the Chauvin area). The event will be free of charge, with tea, coffee and juices being made available. A special guest at the exhibition will be Diane Buhanen, a poet and essayist who will read from selected works, including Between the Silences, in which she invites readers to sit in the back row of Family and Youth Court, and Unruly Angels, a book which opens the curtains on Drug Treatment Courts – c ourts that have been specifically designed to supervise cases of drugdependent offenders who have agreed to accept treatment for substance abuse. Donations taken at the door will cover the cost of activities, as well as winter taste treats of hot chocolate, bread pudding and more. Reduce risks for Alzheimer's Scientists are still racing to find a c ure for Alzheimer's disease. Although there currently is no cure for Alzheimer's, evidence points to strategies individuals can take to help slow the onset of the disease or help prevent memory loss. Although the symptoms and onset of Alzheimer's disease are most notable during a p erson's senior years, scientists say that the neurological changes of Alzheimer's actually may start much earlier on – a s early as when a person is in his or her 20s. A frantic lifestyle, poor dietary choices and inactivity can contribute to Alzheimer's over one's lifetime. Recognizing behaviors or other habits that may contribute to Alzheimer's is the first step to making changes to prevent the condition. Here are some facts to con-

sider. * Obesity can increase risk for Alzheimer's. * Smoking after the age of 65 makes a p erson almost 80 percent more likely to develop Alzheimer's. * Diabetics are twice as likely to get the disease. * Genetics are only responsible for about one-quarter of Alzheimer's cases. Although there aren't any magic pills or potions, there are easy things anyone can do to reduce risk of Alzheimer's disease. * Stop smoking and greatly reduce alcohol intake. * Manage diet to control or prevent diabetes. * Avoid activities that can lead to head injuries. * Eat a ba lanced diet, and one that limits processed foods. * Enjoy brain-friendly foods,

such as those high in Omega fatty acids. * Make attempts to reduce stress. * Avoid a sedentary lifestyle and behaviors that lead to obesity. * Prevent high cholesterol and hypertension. * Get plenty of sleep and restorative rest. * Keep the mind active with puzzles, reading and other thought-inducing activities. The Mayo Clinic reports that exercise is very important to keeping Alzheimer's at bay. In fact, it may be the most important component of preventing the disease. Scientists have documented that physical activity effectively reduces the probability of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias over the duration of time. This makes exercise an essential part of anyone's lifestyle.

A year of great adventures for the Sites By Dan Jensen

Martha Sites will look back on 2011 as a year filled with great adventures. "It was a lot of fun," said the 71-year-old grandma from New Norway. The adventures began the May long weekend when Martha and her husband, Bill, participated in a Good Sams Samboree at Ferintosh. "We go t o the Samboree every year," said Martha. "It usually draws about 100 units." In July the Sites flew to Florida where they picked up a 1988 Honda Trike as a replacement for their 1984 Honda Gold Wing. "We drove it all the way home, stopping at the Kennedy Space Centre, Disneyworld and Nashville, Tennessee," said Martha. At the Kennedy Space Centre, the Sites were able to view the launchpad and go i nside an Apollo Space Module that was used during the days of the Saturn V rockets. "The Kennedy Space Centre was absolutely phenomenal," said Martha. In Nashville, the Sites obtained tickets for a p erformance at the Grande Ole Opry and took a ride on a tour bus on which a guide pointed out many famous landmarks. "It was one of Bill's dreams to go to the Grande Ole Opry," said Martha. Driving through North Dakota the Sites were able to see first hand the damages caused by a major flood. "We drove by a so ccer field where you could only see the tops of the goalposts," said Martha. "At a se rvice station we noticed several big piles of sand had been brought in for people to put into bags as a barricade against the water."

Martha Sites poses for a photo in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. She had joined the Chan International Model and Talent Agency for a series of photo shoots. Bill Sites on the 1988 Honda trike they drove home from Florida in July.

The nine-day trip was the longest the Sites have ever taken with a motorbike. "It was a rea l rush," said Martha. "We felt like we were recycled teenagers." After a sh ort time at home Martha joined the Chan International Model and Talent agency for a series of onlocation photoshoots at the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, and Buckingham Palace in London, England. "There were 15 models, including myself, as well as the agency's director, Mary Chan, and the hairdressers and makeup artists," said Martha. "It was really the trip of a lifetime."

In November, Martha participated in a Faces West modelling competition in Vancouver, B.C., where she won awards for monologue and photo presentation in the 25 plus age category. "There were about 400 models there," said Martha. The awards go nicely with the ones Martha received from Faces West a couple of years ago for top model in the runway competition (40 years plus) and the monologue competition. "Modelling is my thing," she said. "I don't get paid for any of it but I have a lot of fun." Martha started modelling in 1994 with an appearance at a meeting of the Christian Women's Club, where she showed a long Linda Lundstrom coat with

beaver skin around the hood and cuffs. In the years since she has appeared in Here Comes the Bride and The World of Women shows in Red Deer, been a c haperone for the Miss Canada Pageant and Misks Canadian Universe Pageant, attended Linda MacPhee workshops in Edmonton, and run a modelling business. "I love to pass on the knowledge I have gained over the years and take a lot of enjoyment out of working with young people in the area," she said. Martha doesn't feel as old as her birth certificate indicates she is. "I'm not slowing down very much," she said. "There are just too many things I still want to experience."

Alzheimer's Disease – it's more than you think An online survey of baby boomers across Canada conducted by the Alzheimer Society reveals a w orrying lack o f awareness about Alzheimer’s disease. Survey results show that an astonishing 23 per cent of boomers can’t name any of the early signs of Alzheimer’s disease, even though their risk doubles every five years after age 65. Of those surveyed, 50 p er cent identified memory loss as a key symptom, but failed to mention other critical signs. “Boomers are their own best detectors of Alzheimer’s,” says Mary Schulz, National Director of Education at the Alzheimer Society. “This is a n insidious disease. Most people associate memory loss with Alzheimer’s but it’s so m uch more. Sudden changes in mood, misplacing common household items (like keys in the refrigerator), repeating words or statements or difficulty with everyday tasks like getting dressed can all be warning signs that need to be discussed with a doctor.” Most boomers are famil-

iar with the common hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease of not recognizing familiar faces and objects. But less than half know about life-altering changes, such as hallucinations or total dependency on others for basic care, that occur in the disease’s later stages. More troubling, respondents are unaware that diabetes, obesity, heart disease and chronic depression significantly increase their odds for developing the disease. Today’s findings confirm a disturbing lack of knowledge about Alzheimer’s disease among boomers, the country’s largest demographic group, who will become increasingly at risk as they age. But the reasons for self-awareness and prevention have never been more compelling. Without a cure or drugs to stop the disease, Alzheimer’s is d estined to be the most pressing and costly health issue boomers will face in their lifetime: either they will get the disease themselves or be faced with caring for someone with the disease. In Judy Southon’s case, it might have saved her a l ot of

anguish. The 63-year-old former school teacher and business owner was blindsided four years ago when her husband Vic, an electrician, was diagnosed with both Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. “I started noticing he was having trouble fixing ordinary things and using a d rill. He couldn’t follow instructions, use his cell phone or handle money; he couldn’t even tell time. I was traumatized. The grief never goes away, but the more you know about this disease, the better you’ll cope and plan ahead and make the most of each day. It’s important that people really understand and be aware of the signs.” At 74, Vic is n ow in the last stages of the disease and is b eing cared for in a long-term care facility. During Alzheimer Awareness Month, the Alzheimer Society is asking Canadians to test their own knowledge by taking the survey at www. alzheimer.ca/testyourknowledge. The Society also urges Canadians, especially those 40 and older, to practice prevention by learning the risks and

making simple lifestyle changes: eat a h eart-healthy diet, stay active, exercise regularly, maintain a healthy weight and monitor their blood pressure and cholesterol levels. This year’s campaign is made possible in part through an unrestricted educational grant by Pfizer Canada. About Alzheimer’s disease Alzheimer’s disease is t he leading form of dementia. It is a fa tal progressive disease of the brain that robs memory and steals the ability to reason, communicate and perform daily tasks. Changes in the brain can begin to appear decades before diagnosis and progression can last between seven and 10 years. Eventually, the person affected will require 24-hour care and supervision. Age is t he single biggest risk factor but the disease can also strike as early as 40. About the survey More than 1,000 Canadians aged 45 to 65 completed the survey in July 2010. Men and women were split evenly. Of those surveyed, 37 per cent had some personal connection to the disease. None were affili-

ated with the Alzheimer Society in any way, nor have they or a family member donated to or used any of the Society’s programs and services. Boomers were tested in three areas: early signs of Alzheimer’s disease (unaided and aided awareness); later-stage symptoms (aided), and key risk factors (aided). To read the results, visit www.alzheimer.ca/testyourknowledge About the Alzheimer Society The Alzheimer Society is t he leading nationwide health organization for people affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias in Canada. The Society is a principal funder of Alzheimer research and training, provides enhanced care and support to people with the disease, their families and their caregivers, and is a prominent voice within all levels of government. Active in more than 150 communities across Canada, the Society is also a founding and key member of Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI), an organization at the forefront of global efforts to fight dementia.

Camrose suffers Welcome Home At Sunrise your independence cultural loss in is important to us. early morning fire By Murray Green

The Foundation for Peace and Multiculturalism organization in Camrose lost everything in a d owntown blaze on Christmas Eve. Now, the Foundation needs your help to survive. "We lost everything. We lost all of the artifacts that we have collected from other countries. We used them for a display when we talked about projects. Some of the artifacts were priceless. My dad brought things back that were donated from different countries he has visited. We had a painting from Belgium where my dad participated in a walk," said Zoila dePaz-Gendreau, organization secretary. "We also lost all of our books on other countries and flags. Now we have to generate our yearly report, and we have no information," said Jorge dePaz, organization president. "We also lost all of our office supplies and computer. The computer contained all of our contact information for the board and volunteers," added Zolia. A meeting will be held by the board to determine the next plan of action for the organization. "The problem is that we lost all of the information, so we are asking board members and volunteers to phone us so we can start again," said Zoila. "We only called upon volunteers when we had to, so we don't know the numbers off the top of our head." The 12-member board is made up of people from the Camrose and Wetaskiwin area. The Foundation for Peace and Multiculturalism is starting from scratch. "It is going to be hard. We never charged anything and we did everything to help the community. We didn't charge and we relied on volunteers to help us. Now, we are asking people to help us by donating artifacts from different countries, to volunteer for us and to donate funds so we can continue to operate. We rely totally on donations," explained Jorge. "We didn't have fire insurance. This is something that you think will never happen to you." The limited funds didn't allow for insurance. "We use funds from donations to pay for the rent and keep the office going," added Zolia. An early morning fire at about 4 a.m. o n Christmas Eve in a downtown historical building, left several businesses and the Foundation for Peace and Multiculturalism without a home. The building contained the Camrose News, Gifts and Smoke Shop, a printing business, and the Dr. Jones Chiropractic office. A hair salon was in the process of moving in. The building housing the businesses was owned by the chiropractic office owners. No one was injured in the blaze. "There was a r oom upstairs that was used by musicians every Thursday evening. All of the equipment they used are down in the ashes," said Jorge. T he Foundation for Peace and Multiculturalism was located in the building for nine years. It started in the upper level and moved to the basement within the last couple of years. "We believe that if we understand other cultures, we can live in peace. We have helped cultures in the community with knowledge, by informing them of the different cultures. Now, we need the help of the community," said Jorge. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. "We have an account set up at the Battle River Credit Union, so anyone can make a d onation," concluded Zolia. To donate artifacts, books, office space or funds to the Foundation for Peace and Multiculturalism, contact Zolia at 780-679-6634 or 780-672-9297.

Library planning a busy year By Dan Jensen

It's shaping up to be a busy year for Camrose Public Library. "We've started 2012 with a whole host of programs for everyone in the family," said Camrose Public Library director Deb Cryderman. First on the schedule will be a Family Literacy Day Jan. 27 featuring Gail de Vos, who will be telling stories to parents and their children starting at 6 p.m. Jan. 27. The Alberta Beach resident and School of Library and Information studies teacher at the University of Alberta will be telling stories to parents and children for an hour beginning at 6 p.m. At 7 p .m. children will be invited to participate in literary activities while de Vos runs a storytelling workshop for parents, caregivers and anyone else who is interested. On Feb. 8, starting at 6 p.m. in the Irving Room, Morten Asfeldt will be reading from Pike Portage, a compendium of stories he has edited about the explorers, Dene guides, adventurers, trappers and misguided wanderers, as well as the modern day

canoeists in the sub arctic taiga and the boreal forest of the Mackenzie River watershed. The book has been described by wilderness canoeist and University of Toronto physics professor George Luste as "an absorbing escape into the past and the endless solitude of the northern wilderness." Asfeldt, will also be sharing slides from his own northern journeys. The library will be setting up a d isplay of banned books in celebration of Freedom to Read Week, which will be observed February 26 to March 3. "Freedom to Read Week is a time to encourage Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom," said Cryderman. Books that have been banned over the past two thousand years include the Bible and works by Shakespeare. In 2001, the U.S.A. Patriot Act, passed by the American Congress in response to terrorist attacks on New York and Washington on September 11, gave the FBI power to collect information about the library borrowings of any U.S. citizen. The act also

empowered the federal agency to gain access to library patrons’ logons to Internet Web sites – a nd protected the FBI from disclosing the identities of individuals being investigated. On March 31, Kimmy Beach, Parkland Regional Library's Writer in Residence, will be offering two workhops to the public. The first, from 11 a.m. to noon, will be entitled What Should I Read to Become a Better Writer. The second, from 1 to 3 p.m., will be entitled Introductory Writing Workshop. "Both are free but space is limited, so c ontact the library (780-672-4214) to sign up," said Cryderman. On April 11, the IDS 270 class at the University of Alberta Augustana Faculty will share stories from their time dog sledding in Canada's north. As a non-profit society, Camrose Public Library provides programs and services with little or no cost to the user. "As a result of our programs we have seen many lives change for the better," said Cryderman.

In loving memory of

Elaine Petryshen 1940 – 2011 It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of o ur beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Elaine left us to join her parents Alf and Mable Oas, sister Sharon, and loving friends on December 26, 2011 at the age of 71. Elaine Marion Oas was born on April 19, 1940, in Dodds, Alberta where she g rew up with four sisters and one brother on the family farm. Elaine attended school first in Dodds, and later in Ryley. On June 4, 1960, Elaine married Edward Petryshen, starting a life together. The couple were later blessed with three children. After a house fire, Elaine and Edward, along with their sister and brother Noreen and Teddy, moved to British Columbia in search of work. Edward found work in construction, and Elaine ran a daycare out of their home. Elaine had a p assion for photography, letter writing, butterflies and making chocolate chip cookies. Everyone who knew Elaine often received phone calls and letters from her, simply checking in to see how everyone was. Elaine leaves behind to cherish her memory her h usband of 5 2 years, Edward; children Cheryl (Jim), Brenda (Tony) and Darryl; her grandchildren Brooke and Chad; sisters Myrna, Noreen (Teddy) and Joanne (Leonard); brother Allan (Ellen); along with numerous family and friends. A celebration of E laine’s life was held on Saturday, December 31, 2011 at A rbour Chapel in Surrey, BC. Memorial contributions in Elaine’s memory are gratefully accepted to the Canadian Diabetes Association of Canada.

Gordon Kenneth Rochon September 3, 1932 – December 27, 2011 Gordon Rochon was born September 3, 1932 to Walter and Ruth Rochon. Gordie was just a young lad when Walter and Ruth Rochon moved into the Donalda district. It didn’t take Gordie long to find friends in the area as there were quite a few young folks his age around. He liked to play the guitar and sing, so he f it in very well. It wasn’t too long before an orchestra was formed and Gordie played and sang some of his favorite songs, one of which was I Traced Her Little Footprints in the Snow. Soon it was known as Gordie’s song. He played with different groups over the years. Gordie met Ag gie Rittenhouse in 1977; they spent the next 34 years together working side by side on the farm. He liked to repair lawn mower motors and was very good at making them run. He also worked for many farmers in the area. He will be sadly missed by everyone that knew him – e specially his partner Aggie. Gordie was predeceased by his parents Walter and Ruth, uncle Emil Ekholm and nephew Don Ekholm. Funeral services for the late Mr. Gordie Rochon were held on Saturday, January 7, 2012 in Donalda Community Hall, Donalda, Alberta with Albern Bergstrom officiating. If friends desire, a memo rial donation may be made in Gordie’s memory to S.T.A.R.S. or Donalda Cemetery in care of Stettler Funeral Home & Cr ematorium, Box 1780, Stettler, Alberta T0C 2L0, who were entrusted with the care and arrangements. Lorraine Annabelle McLean

Floyd Allan Bergstrom

Clifford Henry Van Slyke

On December 16, 2011 Lorraine McLean, surrounded by loving family, lost her ha rdfought battle with cancer. The oldest daughter and second child of Thora and Einar Modalen, Lorraine was born in Camrose on September 30, 1930 and was raised in Edberg and Camrose. She worked at Lyseng Studios (painting color to black and white pictures) prior to her marriage to Ed Sjolie, and then they worked at Shirley’s Bakery. Together they were proud parents of three children. Once the children were older, Lorraine worked at Rosehaven for more than 30 yea rs where she made many lifelong friends and showed her true compassion for all people, especially those who were without support and or family. After many years of being on her own, caring for and “being there” for her family, Lorraine married Richard McLean in June 1985. For almost 20 years they enjoyed dancing, travelling and camping, construction of various family additions and projects and, above all, enjoying and supporting their families in whatever way they could. Lorraine was not one to complain about her l ife and always saw her glass as half full. She will be forever cherished and lovingly remembered by her family – ch ildren Trudy (Brent) Bratland, Richard Sjolie (Heather Tansowny) and Tami (Terry) Albach; twin sisters Darlene (Bill) Wright and Marlene (Tom) Barr; brother Gilbert (Leona) Modalen; grandchildren Tanner and Dustin Bratland, Felicia (David) McDougall, Billy Joe (Amber) Tansowny, Alex, Brittany and Alannah Albach; great-grandchildren Kelty, Seth and Karter Bratland, Hunter McDougall, Carter, Parker, Riley, Brennan and Easton Tansowny; nieces Kerri Modalen, Sandy Wright, Dana Barr; and nephews Bruce Wright and Dan Barr. Team USA places seventh at World Junior Championship By Murray Green

PLAYER OF THE MONTH

Former Camrose Minor Hockey player Dalton Reum was named the Husky Energy impact player of the month (December) for the Swift Current Broncos of the Western Hockey League. He currently has four goals and 11 points in 35 games as a second year defenceman with the club. Reum also played for the Camrose Kodiaks and Drayton Valley Thunder of the Alberta Junior Hockey League.

Local girls win spots at Alberta Winter Games By Murray Green

The U16 female rosters for the eight zone teams that will compete at the 2012 Alberta Winter Games, February 9 to 12, 2012, in Spruce Grove have been set. Four Camrose players, one from Killam and one from Forestburg will be competing for the Zone 4 Parkland squad. “It’s always exciting for the athletes to participate in a provincial event like the Alberta Winter Games,” said Team Alberta female coordinator, Mike Kraichy. “We had a solid turnout at each of the zone camps and we are excited to start preparing the athletes for the competition.” The Parkland tryouts were held Dec. 9 to 11 in Penhold. There were 14 girls that play in Camrose who attended the camp, four were selected to play for the Zone 4 team. Second year Camrose Cubs players Kailyn Parsons and Hannah Heck were joined by Taylor Kezama, a first-year bantam on the boys' double-A team, and Jillian MacWilliam of Hay Lakes, a f irst-year player on the Cubs. Shyann Kelndorfer of Killam and Kelsie Litke of Forestburg also made the Parkland team. Close to 600 athletes tried out in total at the eight different zone camps that occurred around the province in December. From each camp 20 athletes were chosen to represent their zone. Only female players born from 1997 to 2000 were eligible to try out. The Alberta Winter Games is the first stage of the Team Alberta Female program and occurs every second year, opposite of the Team Alberta Challenge. The tournament leads to the selection of 60 athletes to attend the Team Alberta U16 Female summer development camp. From there athletes are identified to continue into the Team Alberta U18 program. For more information on the Alberta Winter Games, visit www.2012awg.ca.

A 5-2 loss to the Czech Republic left Team USA in a state of shock. The players were in disbelief that they will be going home without a m edal, despite having 11 returning members. The veterans all but disappeared from the scoresheets in the first round of the World Junior Hockey Championships in Edmonton. USA out shot the Europeans 54-29, but had nothing to show for their efforts. "To go a ll out against the Czechs and leave everything out there and still come away with nothing is heartbreaking. We did everything we could, except put the puck in to the back of the net. I don't even know what to say. We are in shock," said captain Jason Zucker, in an attempt to explain the opposite of the Miracle on Ice. "We all played our best. We stuck to our game plan and I guess you win some and lose some. To play like we did and lose, it just blows my mind." In the Americans defence, they ran into two of the tournaments hottest goalies in Petr Mrazek of Czech and Sami Aittokallio of Finland. "The goalies played well. I'll give that to them, but we hit three posts and clearly, it just wasn't our day today," said Jason, a M innesota Wild draft pick. USA also lost 4-1 to Finland and 3-2 to Canada. The only bright spot was an 11-3 victory over weaker Denmark. However, the win was shallow as Denmark failed to win a ga me at the tournament. "You have to give them credit (Czechs) because they played hard. It stings for us because we worked so hard for this event," said forward Bill Arnold, who was the star of the game with a goal and an assist for Team USA. "Their goalie played well, but we could have had more bodies at the net and buried our chances. I'm guilty of that. I could have had some more goals. It was just one of those games." Bill couldn't point to one part of the game to find answers to

the upset. "We don't want to have regrets, but if we could have had a couple of plays over again, we would do things differently. It is never a good feeling to lose," said Bill, a Calgary Flames draft pick. "We are going to learn from our mistakes and still do the best we can." Bill praised the local facilities and Camrose for preparing them for the tournament. "It was really great. From the ice to the restaurants, and the hotels, we met a lot of nice people who took really good care of us in Camrose. We all had a rea lly good time there. The community did a good job in keeping us focused on hockey. After we set our line-up, we came together as a team in Camrose. "As much as this stings, we have to come out and win the next one. We want to finish as high as we can, even if it doesn't earn us a medal. Everyone has to look in the mirror and learn from this loss. We can't feel sorry for ourselves." After defeating a weak Latvia squad, Team USA narrowly edged Switzerland 2-1, the same team they played in Camrose, to finish in a disappointing seventh place. Team Canada

The Canadians learned some lessons, prior to the tournament. The exhibition loss for Team Canada to Sweden, 4-3, was a go od lesson for the squad heading into the World Junior Championships. Canada went undefeated in the round robin portion of the tournament before meeting the powerful Russians in the semifinals. "We turned some pucks over and they capitalized on those chances. We have to play a full 60 minutes," said Team Canada defenceman Dougie Hamilton "With our success in the past, some people think we should win every game. It is a l ot of hard work because there are other good teams and we have to earn it." He realizes all games are

tough, but the four top teams are fighting for a m edal. "We now know what to expect from the top teams," added Dougie. "We are looking forward to playing the top teams again and staying with them. Sweden was a go od team to prepare for the playoffs." Switching from exhibition to tournament play should raise the level of play. "I t hink we are a pretty good team. We are deep and have guys that can fill roles." Dougie joined his brother Freddie on Team Canada. "It is special to be able to play with him. It is a dream come true for us. Anytime you can represent your country is an honour and to do it with my brother just makes it that much more special, especially at the top level," said Dougie. "We have been best friends growing up, so i t is g reat to be able to celebrates this together." The Hamilton brothers are ready for prime time. "This is a step up (higher level) of hockey for me. I w as able to play one exhibition game in the NHL, so it shows I'm w ithin reach of the best hockey," said Dougie. He was a f irst round draft choice of the Stanley Cup winning Boston Bruins. "This tournament is similar to that (playing for Boston) and everyone is big, strong and skilled. It is going to be a jump, but I want to build off of it and go back to junior and finish a good season." If Dougie wasn't a Bruins fan before, he certainly is now. "Being drafted by Boston is very special for me. To be recognized by the Stanley Cup winning team by their scouts and coaches is s pecial. I t hink the organization is smart, they know what they are doing because they won the cup and to be in the Bruins organization is exciting for me. I can't wait to contribute for them." Team Canada was down 6-1 to Russia and fought back to end the game at 6-5. This confidence led to some redemption when they shut out Finland 4-0 to garner the bronze medal.

Next blood donor clinic in Camrose Jan. 19 By Dan Jensen

Camrose and area residents are being asked to help replenish dwindling blood supplies. Canadian Blood Services will be holding clinics at the Camrose Fieldhouse (4516-54 Street) from 4:30 to 8:30 Jan. 19 and from 11:30 to 3 p.m. Jan. 20. "Becoming a blood donor is one of the greatest acts of kindness," states the Canadian Blood Services website. "Research shows that Canadians donate blood because they want to help other Canadians in need – friends, neighbours, family or total strangers." Hospitals across Canada require over 2,000 units of blood every day. One unit of blood is equal to 450 mL and the average number of units required per patient is 4 .6 units. A si ngle blood donation can help to save up to three lives. "People need blood and blood products for many reasons," states Canadian Blood Services. Blood is used to treat wounds, illnesses like cancer and the lack of enough red blood cells. It is also used in procedures such as organ transplants, bypasses and hip replacements." While donating blood is easy (donors must be 17 years of age) only 3.5 per cent of Canadians actually do it. "This means that if you put 100 people in a room, only 3.5 will be blood donors," states Canadian Blood Services. "If each of the 3.5 makes a b lood donation, Canadian Blood Services will have collected 3.5 units of blood. Since on average, 4.6 units of blood are required to treat a patient, we are short 1.1 units. We need more blood donors!" Donors may make appointments by calling 1-888-236-6283, or by visiting www.blood.ca.

Canadian Blood Services phlebotomist Tabitha Friesen extracts blood from Camrose resident Kurt Lyseng on Dec. 29 to help Evan in the future. The three-year-old girl from Sedgewick was asking for help from Camrose and area residents as she fights Acute Myeloid Leukemia at the Stollery Children's Hospital in Edmonton. Kurt has given blood 94 times and hopes to make it 100 this year.

Ford F-150 Motor Trend's Truck of the Year

By Dan Jensen

The 2012 Ford F-150 has been named winner of the prestigious Motor Trend Truck of the Year Award. "This is t he fourth time the F-150 has won this award," said Lamb Ford Sales sales manager Brett Read. "No other truck has won the award as many times." Motor Trend editors applauded the F-150 because, they said, "F-150s are built to work and felt better the more they were challenged. Ford offers an enormous variety of configurations and designs, making the truck tailorable to just about any need. It's the combination of advancement in design, engineering excellence, efficiency, safety, value, and the performance of intended function that has earned the Ford F-150 the title of Motor Trend's 2012 Truck of the Year." New appearance package

The Ford F-150 comes with a n ew FX appearance package that delivers a unique look with stealthy, flatblack accents. The look is se t off with black fender and tailgate badges that feature red lettering, which is carried into the interior with a red-stitched steering wheel. The FX interior also features black leather seating surfaces with red perforations and red piping. Unique interior touches include black-painted dash accents, brushed-metal surfaces and satin shifter knob, door handles and air conditioning vent bezels. Also new for 2012, the FX luxury package now offers cooled front seats, which combine with the previously available heated seats. Fuel efficiency and performance

The powertrain lineup delivers a mix of best-in-classhorsepower, torque capability and fuel economy. The 3.7 litre four-valve Ti-VCT V6 produces 302 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 278 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm. Two-wheel-drive models use just13.84 litres per 100 km in the city and 10.23 litres per 100 km on the highway. The maximum towing capacity when properly equipped is 6,100 pounds. The 5.0 litre four-valve dual-overhead-camshaft TiVCT V8 produces 360 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 380 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,250 rpm. Two-wheel-drive models use just 15.68 litres per 100 km in the city and 11.2 litres per 100 km on the highway. The 6.2 litre two-valve single-overhead-camshaft V8 produces 411 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 434 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,500 rpm. The maximum trailer towing capacity when properly equipped is 11,300 lbs. The 3.5 litre TiVCT EcoBoost produces 365 horsepower at 5,000 rpm on regular fuel and a b est-in-class 420 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,500 rpm. Up to 90 per cent of peak torque is available from 1,700 rpm to 5,000 rpm. Maximum trailer towing capacity is 11,300 pounds. "The 3.5 litre EcoBoost now accounts for more than 40 per cent of F-150 retail sales and is on pace to exceed 100,000 sales in less than a year on the market," said Read. Upgrades on the 2012 F-150's drivetrain include replacing last year's electronic shift-on-the-fly with a twospeed automatic 4x4 system for Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum trim levels. The system still offers four high and four low modes, but now also offers a 4x4 auto mode. If the truck senses a loss of traction, it immediately transfers torque to the front wheels, making the system more seamless for the customer.

Electronic shift-on-the-fly is now standard on XL to FX4 trim levels. A new feature, Hill Start Assist, helps keep the truck from rolling backward at a stop, making it easier to pull away when on a slope or a hill, especially when towing. With the brake pedal pressed, if sensors detect the vehicle is o n a s lope, the system is a utomatically activated. Brake pressure is held in the braking system and the truck remains stationary on the slope for up to two seconds after the driver releases the brake pedal. Power assisted steering

The 2012 F-150 offers customers plenty of technologies that boost capability, performance, driving enjoyment and fuel efficiency. One such technology is the class-exclusive electric power-assisted steering (EPAS). The system has been carefully tuned with sophisticated speed mapping to deliver accurate responses at high speed while remaining light and manageable in parking maneuvres. Strong backbone

Strategic use of high-strength steel in key structural elements, including the fully boxed, ladder-style frame and ultra-high-strength steel in the passenger safety cage helps F-150 deliver its class-leading capabilities while maintaining a l ighter weight than it could using plain steels. Twin-tube shocks at all four corners help refine the ride and improve control in various road conditions, while wide rear leaf springs provide outstanding axle control and balance ride smoothness. Tuned, shear-style body mounts help keep road vibration away from the vehicle body. Four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock brake system

provide the confidence of a firm pedal feel backed by substantial stopping power. The tailgate step is a cla ss exclusive option that makes Dan Madison accessing the cargo box easy. Just raise the grab bar and flip down the side-resistant step. Box side steps are another class-exclusive F-150 option. There's one on each side of the box and each can handle 227 kg. You can deploy or stow them with your feet. Cutting-edge technology

F-150's cutting-edge technology eases your drive in so many ways. Take the standard electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering that makes parking and other low speed manoeuvres much easier while helping you achieve better fuel efficiency. This new steering system even counteracts the pull of a c rowned road or steady crosswind and damps out steering wheel vibration from small road irregularities. The new LCD productivity screen in the available message centre features engaging, easy-to-use menus that can help you track fuel usage, explore unique truck applications, and much more. The class-exclusive OffRoad display gives you instant feedback on pitch angle, wheel direction and bank angle. Steering-wheel mounted controls enable you to keep both hands on the wheel while utilizing this available technology. The rear view camera option displays a full-colour image in your auto-dimming rearview mirror or on the available Navigation System's screen.

Rose City Roots Society presents Alberta's Nolan at Scalliwags By Murray Green

Joe Nolan has a l ot of electricity and it will certainly rub off on you. Nolan will be appearing at the Scalliwags Pub and Rum Bar on Jan. 14 in the Rose City Roots Society concert series. In December 2010, Joe went to Nashville, Tennessee, to record his third album Goodbye Cinderella. The album was produced by award-winning producer Colin Linden and features an all-star cast including Spooner Oldham (Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin and Neil Young) on keyboards,

Charlie McCoy (Bob Dylan, Elvis, Simon and Garfunkel) on harmonica, Dave Roe (Johnny Cash, John Mellencamp) on acoustic bass, Chris Donahue (Emmylou Harris, Robert Plant) on electric bass, Bryan Owings (Emmylou Harris, Tony Joe White, Delbert McClinton) on drums, along with producer Linden (Bruce Cockburn, Lucinda Williams) on electric guitars and vocals. The album was recorded by John Whynot (Blue Rodeo, Loreena McKennitt) who also contributed keyboards on a f ew songs.

The recording features 10 new compositions and shows a quantum leap in maturity and confidence for Joe. His combination of sweet, sad lyrics and haunting vocals come from a deep well that shows a y oung man’s heart and an old man’s soul. Protest songs, love songs, songs with questions and songs with answers created a collection that has the listener wanting more. Seeing and listening to him live is the answer. Joe's live performances are mesmerizing and

the audience connects to his soft, honest and heart-felt delivery. Praise for Goodbye Cinderella has come from many directions. The recording was quickly picked up for distribution in Europe with a commitment for Joe to embark on his first European tour in the spring of 2012, and more recently, Joe was nominated in the Best New/Emerging Artist category at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. Joe has been performing non-stop over the past few years building a g rowing fan base. He

has been sharing stages with established artists that include Todd Snider, Colin Linden, Sam Baker, Gurf Morlix, Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women, Mathew Barber, Oh Susanna and the legendary Peter Asher. Joe is a p revious winner of the CBC R adio Galaxy Rising Star Award. The former Edmontonian's music information can be found at www.joenolansongs.com, but catching his show would be a better idea to get energized for 2012.

Primary Care Network offers one-day bereavement workshop Submitted by Colleen Lindholm, Camrose Primary Care Network

We all face loss, eventually. And often we, along with our friends, co-workers, and family members, are not sure what supports are available. Following the highly successful workshop ran in November, The Camrose Primary Care Network (PCN) is offering its second one-day Bereavement and Grief workshop on Saturday, January 14, which will explain the differences between bereavement, grief and mourning. This workshop is f or people

who are coping with grief and loss, as well as for people interested in becoming “grief helpers” – co-workers, family members or even physicians and health care professionals supporting people going through a loss. Participants will learn: the difference between bereavement, grief and mourning; stages of grief; common symptoms of grief; coping with grief; and how to access appropriate community resources. “No one is ex empt from the heartache of losing a l oved one ... so let's learn together how we

can help each other," says facilitator and Registered Nurse with a Certificate in Grief Support, Colette Howery. “Walking alongside another person in the grief journey is i n itself a l earning experience. "There are no set rules or steps or instructions to fix those who mourn. Life changes with each loss experienced. Learn how to create a sa fe place for people to work through their new reality—without judgment or shame. There is n o cure, no drug, no power to get things back t o the

way it was before the loss event. But there is h ope,” adds Certified Grief Trainer Donna Lynn Erickson who also facilitates the workshop. “PCN physicians and staff are really pleased with the success of the first workshop. They recognize there is an opportunity in the community to continue a program for individuals facing loss in their lives," said Stacey Strilchuk, Camrose PCN executive director. “We are fortunate to have Colette and Donna Lynne to partner with for this workshop,

and are so pleased to be able to collaborate with them in a way that is meaningful and relevant to people facing bereavement and grief.” This free workshop, being held at the Edgeworth Centre Community Room #3, will run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and includes lunch. To receive more information or to register, visit www.camrosepcn.com or contact the Camrose PCN at 780-6084927. Space is l imited so c all today.

PHOTO CLASSIFIED ADS

A picture is worth 1,000 words!

For Want Ad service, please phone 780-672-3142 before six on Friday Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

BRCF presents grant to Women's Shelter Society

Battle River Community Foundation director David Ofrim presents a cheque for $4,000 to Camrose Women's Shelter Society executive director Loretta Johnson. The grant was made possible through the generosity of Deanne Morrow and Tony Hladun, and will be used to help children who are in the care of the Shelter receive the school supplies they need to continue their education. By Dan Jensen

The Battle River Community Foundation has granted $4,000 to the Camrose Women's Shelter Society. The grant will support the learning experiences of children when they are at the Shelter. "It will allow us to purchase the supplies, resources and materials that are needed for the development of a learning activity centre for pre-school children," said Camrose Women's Shelter executive director Loretta Johnson. Johnson noted that the Camrose Women's Shelter cared for 252 children between April 1, 2010 and March 31, 2011. The concept of a women's shelter was put forward in 1981 by Camrose and District Support Services and the Camrose Business and Professional Women's Club. Construction began in 1983 after several years of research, planning and fundraising by some very dedicated individuals, and the doors were opened in 1985. Since then, several programs have evolved. The Crisis Intervention Worker program provides 24-hour support to the women and children in the Shelter, as well as to the people who phone the crisis line. The Outreach program has three parts: outreach, follow-up and prevention-education. All programs are free of charge and offer nonjudgmental support. The Childcare program is family-focused and individualized, with the goal of enhancing and maintaining spiritual, physical, emotional and social well-being. The Volunteer program is a f undamental part of the Camrose Women's Shelter. It is designed to be flexible in order to meet areas of interest and schedules. The School program offered at the Shelter is o perated by the Battle River School Division. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects in east central Alberta which benefit local communities and have positive impacts on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds is kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Some grant funding is also made available by generous donors who make annual gifts to the Foundation. Since it was founded in 1995 the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $1,400,000 to support important local initiatives and organizations such as the Camrose Women's Shelter.
