DeMerchant receives Queen's medal By Murray Green

Bawlf resident John DeMerchant was honoured to receive his Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. He is the district commander for the local region of the Royal Canadian Legion. "It really means a lot to me because it shows that other people around me are recognizing all of the work I have done," said John. "I've always tried to be involved in the community. It ranks up there with carrying the Olympic torch. It is such an honour and it makes me feel humble." The New Brunswick born veteran joined the armed forces in the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) in 1970. "I left in 1979, but a short time later went back in," explained John, who was a master corporal. "I was posted to Germany, Victoria, several tours to Cypress and then I retired in Calgary. I went to the Museum of Regiments in Calgary when they were building it and worked there for several years before I retired." John served as a gunner in an armed defence crew; he was in the assault pioneers, a rifleman, a store man, infantry trades and an assistant curator at the museum handling the artifacts of one of the most detailed museums in the country. "The museum has the largest collection of Canadian war artifacts outside of the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. It covers the air force, army and navy," said John. "I moved to Bawlf, from Calgary, about 12 years ago and transferred my membership," said John. "I've been a member since 1969. I served in the military for a number of years and was a member for all those years, except when I was stationed in Germany." John received the news he had cancer and was off work for a year and decided to move to Bawlf. "We rented our house out

and took the trailer to Bawlf. When we couldn't find a place right away, we lived in the trailer and ended up staying. People are friendly here. I also started a recycling business in Camrose, a door to door service." While at the Bawlf Legion, John started a Family Day tradition of hosting an event. "We have fun games for the children and we offer wagon rides. The idea was to have a community event for everyone." John also helps with disaster services in Bawlf and belongs to the Lions Club. "I like to volunteer for different things around Bawlf. Pretty much anything people need help with, I volunteer for," said John. "I was the president of the Bawlf branch of the Royal Canadian Legion for nine years, from 2001–10. We don't have a building, but we still meet. We met at the Camrose branch for a few years and now we moved to breakfast meetings." John added "I am very proud of the Legion and the Legion

has been very supportive of the veterans. I thought it was moving away from some of the old traditions and I just wanted to help maintain the standards the Legion has set. We are moving into the newer future that we should be and I had some goals that I thought would help in the district commander position. I would like to see each branch work closer with the veterans and the communities. Your own community should come first and then help neighbouring branches." John said he wants branches to be involved with the poster and essay contests and maintain a strong Remembrance Day celebration because it is the most important event for the Legion. He also cited that the cenotaph at each branch should be kept up and should be included in services again. "We need more people involved with the Legion. We can't have the same two people do all of the work; everyone has to help. Legions need to work together."

City council looks at changes to public hearing process By Dan Jensen

The public hearing process will look a little bit different in 2013. City of Camrose administration is preparing for City council's consideration of a number of amendments to a council procedures bylaw to ensure that the information that is being provided and subsequent discussions at future hearings comply with the Municipal Government Act. The proposed amendments are being welcomed by council both as a way of streamlining the hearings and keeping them from going on too long. A hearing on a land matter last fall lasted three hours. "I appreciate you (City administration) bringing this forward," said Mayor Marshall Chalmers at council's first committee of the whole meeting of the new year Jan. 7. "I agree that the process we were going through seemed to be just a little awkward." Speaking limits

The amended council procedures bylaw will incorporate concerns and suggestions that were expressed by council in regard to who is allowed to speak at the meetings and for how long. Councillor Galenza said one of the problems he perceives is that people are allowed to speak more than once on a subject. "Previously way back in the archives we used to start by limiting these people to five or ten minute presentations and they were not allowed to come back into the discussion again unless there were questions from council," said Galenza. "When we are having public hearings lasting three hours I

am not sure we are accomplishing that much." Mayor Chalmers said it has been his understanding to date that the chair is required to let people speak until they have had their say. Corporate and Protective Services general manager Kim Isaac told council the current procedures bylaw does not speak to how long a person is allowed to speak at a hearing. She said if what is being presented is not new information council should have the right to limit the comments. Councillor John Howard said it would be useful at the end of a public hearing to ask if anyone has anything new to add. "In the three-hour public hearing we were hearing the same thing over and over and over again. It got to the point where I wasn't really hearing much about what was being said because there wasn't anything new to listen to. I agree with councillor Galenza. I think sometimes they have gotton prolonged ad nausem. It is a tough one but I do think when eight people want to say the same thing one person can say it and the other seven can say amen. That is what we do in church." City manager Damian Herle said the intention of the procedures bylaw is that only members of council should be allowed to give the closing remarks. "What is clear is that people that are entitled to be heard are heard by council, but within the scope of that, the rest of the rules and regulations are really subject to council approval through the council procedures bylaw." BRSD votes to consider school closures The Battle River School Division board of trustees has voted in favour of undertaking a 15-week process to gather information, consult the public and review the positive and negative aspects of keeping both Lougheed School and Rosalind School operating beyond June 30 of this year. A decision on whether or not to close the two schools will be made by the board on Thursday, April 25. The discussion process was recommended to the board by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Larry Payne Jan. 10 as a result of both schools’ low enrollment and the tough financial realities facing the Division. Both Lougheed and Rosalind are Grades 1 to 9 schools. On September 30, which is the official “student count” date upon which Alberta Education bases funding, Lougheed School had 47 students and Rosalind School had 45 students. Battle River has experienced significant declines in student numbers over the last few years, as more students have been graduating from BRSD high schools than are starting

Grade 1. The division expects to lose about 150 more students in the coming year. School funding is based on enrollment, so every decline in the number of students also means a decline in dollars. In addition, as was pointed out by Dr. Payne when making his recommendation, the school division is facing the loss of an additional $3.8 million from its budget as a result of a change in one government funding formula. Plus, costs are rising and the province is expressing its own concerns about how well it will be able to fund programs and services such as school divisions for the coming year. “I know with certainty that every aspect of BRSD will have fewer resources next year,” stated Dr. Payne. “My concern is that the smaller the school the greater the impact of losing resources because small sites have much less ability to absorb these challenges in their budgets. As a teacher and educational leader, in all good conscience, I believe that better educational opportunities can be provided within BRSD

for these students. When I look ahead, I believe strongly that the existing structures will not be adequate and Battle River will be able to meet the needs of these students better by moving them to other locations.” Over the next 15 weeks the superintendent and senior administrators will gather information, consult with parents and community members, and search for viable options and alternatives to school closure. Public meetings will be held at Rosalind School Feb. 27 and at Lougheed School Feb. 28. All information will be presented to the Board of Trustees for their consideration. According to board chair Doug Bowie, there are many aspects for the board members to take into account when making this important decision. “We’re open to hearing input and suggestions from parents and community members. This is an in-depth process and we definitely do not have a predetermined point of view on what the outcome will be.” If the board votes to close the schools, their doors will be

locked at the end of June. If the board votes to retain these sites, the doors will remain open for the foreseeable future. BRSD trustees have also voted to close Strome School, which has been empty since October, after parents of the majority of school’s 51 students in Grades 1 to 9 transferred their children to other sites because of concerns over the quality of education being received. The remaining six were re-directed by the Superintendent of Schools. BRSD requested and was granted permission from the Minister of Education to close the school without going through the usual public consultation process. The Honourable Jeff Johnson, Minister of Education, will be visiting Battle River School Division at the end of January as part of his tour around the province. The Minister made a pledge to "stop by" every school division. Calendar Survey results More than 1300 people expressed their opinion when BRSD asked for input into the

2013-14 school calendar. Two proposed calendars were presented – one which saw students head back to class prior to Labour Day and one which saw classes commence after the holiday weekend. In both of the scenarios, staff return to school in late August, for professional development and classroom preparation. Based on more than 1100 votes in favour of having students return after the long weekend, the 2013-14 school year will start Tuesday, Sept. 3. Lockdown Procedures Battle River School Division has developed an administrative procedure to guide schools in dealing with a lockdown situation, should such an event ever be required. All schools conduct lockdown drills, just as they have fire drills. The new procedure simply outlines how that process works at both the school and the School Division level. In addition, BRSD schools are reviewing their safety protocols and practices, and considering what additional safety measures might be put in place.

Alzheimer Society launches national campaign By Dan Jensen

The Alzheimer Society is launching a new nation-wide campaign this month called See Me, not my disease. Let's talk about dementia. "Our goal is to address myths about Alzheimer disease and shift attitudes to make it easier to talk about dementia," said Janice Fogarty, manager, community relations, Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories. A recent poll by Alzheimer's Disease International showed that 40 per cent of people with dementia had been avoided or treated differently after diagnosis. One in four respondents cited stigma as a reason to conceal their diagnosis.

.

Dementia is a progressive degenerative brain disorder that affects 747,000 Canadians. While it can affect people as young as 40 years of age, the risk doubles every five years after 65. In many cases, stereotypes and misinformation prevent people from getting the help they need and stop others from taking the disease seriously. "Dementia really challenges the values we hold as a society and what it means to be human," says Mary Schulz, director of education at the Alzheimer Society of Canada. "We need to stop avoiding this disease and rethink how we interact with people with dementia. Only by understanding the disease and talking more

openly about it can we face our own fears and support individuals and families living with dementia." A diagnosis of dementia doesn't immediately render a person incapable of working or carrying on with his or her daily life. "Many people with this disease tell us they want to continue contributing to their community and remain engaged for as long as possible," said Schulz. "In fact, growing evidence shows that involving people with dementia in meaningful activities that speak to their strengths helps to slow the progression of the disease and will improve their wellbeing. Inclusion benefits all of us." Canadians can help reduce

the stigma of dementia by correcting any wrong information they hear about the disease with the proper facts and by refusing to make it the subject of trivializing jokes. "We don't tolerate racial jokes yet dementia-related jokes are common," says the Alzheimer Society. Like everyone else, people with dementia need to be treated with respect and dignity. "A person's ability to do things we take for granted will change as the disease progresses," says the Alzheimer Society. "But no matter what stage of the disease, she's still the person she always was, with unique abilities and needs. Appreciate who she

is. Don't talk around her or avoid her at family and society gatherings. People with dementia don't want to lose their friends nor do they want to stop doing activities they enjoy. Be supportive. Stay in touch and connected. Social activity helps slow the progression of the disease and lets people with dementia know you care." The Alzheimer Society is part of the leading nationwide health organization for people affected by Alzheimer disease and related dementia in Canada. The Society in Alberta supports innovative research, provides enhanced care and support to people with the disease, their families and their caregivers, and is a prominent voice with government.

PEN POINTS by Berdie Fowler

Thoughts on merit pay for teachers How does one measure the performance of teachers? By student test scores? By academic credentials? By hours devoted to extra curricular activity involving students? By extra attention to special needs students? By student potential to learn? By how students perceive them to be as teachers? The answer lies somewhere in all of the above but is still elusive. This topic was sparked by the recent proposal of Alberta’s education minister, Jeff Johnson, to have a discussion about merit pay for teachers as a reward for teachers who go “above and beyond,” and as an incentive to encourage all teachers to do likewise. As it is now, teachers are paid according to a grid system based on academic education and years of experience to a cap of 10 or 11 years. It is easy to measure the performance of workers in a widget factory where all workers are in the same environment, have the identical equipment, the same materials with which to work, everything the same. One can simply compare the quality of the finished widgets and the number produced within an equal period of time, to determine which workers have earned bonuses. It is vastly more difficult to measure the performance of teachers because they do not all teach within the same environment. Communities are different with some being more affluent and others with disadvantaged children living in poverty; some schools are old and rundown while others are newer and better equipped; some classes have a greater proportion of immigrant students who are still in the process of learning the English language and becoming comfortable with a new culture; classes vary with the number of special needs students – often on both ends of the academic achievement scale; students come from different home environments – those who are from dysfunctional families, who perhaps witness violence, understandably have difficulty concentrating in class; and not every child has the same potential for learning. Those are some of the reasons it is difficult to measure the performance of a teacher. Merit pay for teachers has been discussed in Alberta before but never implemented. Alberta teachers have opposed the idea because of the difficulty in measuring performance. They say it hurts morale and doesn’t work. Merit pay has been tried in the United States, in spite of opposition by teachers. To date, a Glazerman study in Chicago found there was no noticeable difference in student test scores for teachers who received merit pay. The concept of merit pay for better performance is good; it seems fair and justified. The problem is measuring performance. When I look back on my own schooling, I think the greatest influence on my education was that of my immigrant parents who stressed the value of education (because they had had limited opportunity themselves). Secondly, it was those teachers with whom I felt comfortable, and to whom I could go with a problem. But that is not a basis for determining the proficiency of a teacher. For example, the teacher that almost caused me to give up and drop out of high school happened to be another student’s favourite teacher. It happens all the time. Education of students is the joint responsibility of parents, teachers and government. When each segment is diligent in fulfilling its obligation in the process, and engaged in cooperative effort to improve the system, more students will graduate with better scores. Merit pay for “above and beyond” service is a worthy and absolutely fair concept – but yet to be determined is how to fairly measure elusive and intangible merit.

FILLING A HOT TUB FOR THE FOOD BANK

Generous Camrose and area residents filled a hot tub at R&D Hot Tubs three-quarters of the way full of food for Camrose and District Food Bank during the month of December. R&D Hot Tubs was very pleased with the number of items donated, as well as the $200 in donations that allowed for the purchase of additional baby food and breakfast cereals. This is the second year R&D Hot Tubs has run a fill a hot tub event during December, the first coming in 2011 when items were collected for the Camrose Kinette Club's Silent Santa program. Presenting the food and a cheque to Camrose NeighborAid program director Jo-Anne Tweed (centre) were R&D Hot Tub owners Russ and Doneal Greipl.

Report on the Legislature Doug Griffiths, MLA, Battle River - Wainwright

ERCB seeking feedback on regulatory approach for unconventional development The Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) is accepting feedback on the regulation of future unconventional resource development. Regulating Unconventional Oil and Gas in Alberta - a Discussion Paper outlines a new approach to oil and gas regulation that encourages early and meaningful stakeholder engagement, minimizes surface impacts, protects water, and maximizes resource recovery. The technology used to develop unconventional resources is not new in Alberta; however, the scale of the

developments has the potential to be much larger than Albertans may have experienced in the past. To address the associated challenges with large-scale developments, the ERCB has suggested a new regulatory approach that includes moving from well-bywell regulation to regulation focused on development within a defined area. This playfocused regulation would be performance-based to achieve specific outcomes in public safety, water protection, air quality, waste management, surface impacts, resource conservation, and orderly development. Approximately 171,000 wells in Alberta have been stimulated using hydraulic fracturing since the technology was first introduced in the

1950s. Since 2008, approximately 5,000 horizontal wells have been drilled in Alberta using multi-stage hydraulic fracturing to enhance oil and gas recovery. Albertans are encouraged to participate in the review of the discussion paper, to provide input on and help shape the new regulatory approach. Feedback will be accepted until March 31, 2013. Visit www. ercb.ca for more information. As the MLA for Battle River - Wainwright, I am always available to assist constituents. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the ERCB or any other matter, I can be reached in my constituency office at 780-842-6177. Shore to share his stories in Roots concert series By Murray Green

One of Canada's best storytellers, J.R. Shore, is eager to share his experiences and stories with Camrose music fans. He doesn't view himself as a songwriter, but as someone who loves to tell a good story. "You're absolutely right. I'm keen on sharing my stories with others. Most of them are historical in nature, but there are a couple that hit closer to home and are about my grandfather," said J.R. "Many of the songs are just great stories that most people don't know. The songs are about stories that exist under the headlines that we hear every day." He will be playing at the Scalliwags Pub and Rum Bar at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, during the Rose City Roots Music Society concert series. "I really like the story of Addie Polk because we can all relate to her," explained J.R. "She is this 90-year-old woman, who was one of the victims of the housing crisis in the States. She is a widow, who doesn't have much of an income, and one day the police came to evict her from her home because it had been foreclosed." Addie thought she didn't have a choice, or say in the matter. "She thought about going out with a bang and killing herself. She didn't end up succeeding, fortunately. Her story rose to prominence and reached Congress. Both sides of the aisle (government) wanted to do as little as

possible for her. I poke at them without being preachy about it." The timing is right for J.R.'s appearance in the Rose City. He will be releasing his third CD State Theatre on Jan. 15, so local fans will be one of the first audiences to hear his double length production. State Theatre is a long awaited double album, featuring 12 original songs and eight handpicked covers. The album release will coincide with a string of tour dates in Alberta, celebrating the release. J.R. is playing with the same musicians who recorded the CD, including Mike Barer, Garth Kennedy, Brian Horwitz and Marc Jenkins. "The reason behind the double CD is that I wanted to release my collection of songs, as well as do some covers that satisfy my requirements for a grant," said J.R. "My grant money was for recording folk cover songs and since they were so close to my style of music, it was a no brainer to include them in the same release. I may have painted a pretty broad stroke of what is called folk music." His cover series includes The Band's W.S. Walcott Medicine Show that fits right in with his other project. "I also play in the band Front Porch Roots Revue in the tribute to The Band. I grew up listening to their music, so its exciting to join them." J.R. selected eight songs that had some influence on his career. "Once we were done playing and recording the songs, I was happy

Alberta musician J.R. Shore introduces himself to Camrose.

to have shared them by performing them in a different way." The CD reflects J.R.'s storyteller, social commentator and performer skills. His songs provide a glimpse into years gone by, as well as contemporary characters with melody and lyrics that have audiences hanging on every line. State Theatre's artwork is a mirror image of the old Bailey Theatre. "I came across this abandoned theatre in a ghost town in western Texas and I just had to take a picture of it," J.R. said, as he proceeded to tell another story. "It was once a great place for the community and art, and now it is a home for pigeons. I thought about the great music that must have been played there at one time." The Bailey Theatre was also a home for pigeons before

it was saved by historians. "I came back to Alberta where we have great theatres, the Bailey is among them," added J.R. "It is so refreshing to play at those historical buildings. The history of the buildings have stories to tell and I like to share those stories." A multi-instrumentalist and vocalist from Alberta, J.R. began his musical career in the early '90s with the Grateful Dead inspired Hiway 2. Original projects, Sgt. Singalong and the Military and Panama Red followed, with Shore developing greater and greater depth in his writing and performing. In 2004, J.R. and his wife relocated to Nashville. He seized the opportunity to see first-hand, what it takes to write and play with some of the best in the business. After two years in Nashville, playing such venues as The

Bluebird Cafe, Mercy Lounge and The Basement, Shore was ready to return back to his home turf, Calgary, and make a name for himself. Upon his return to the Canadian prairies, J.R. turned the Alberta songwriting scene on its head, winning three Calgary Folk Fest Songwriting Competitions, and placing as runner-up on two other occasions. Months after his first win, he released his debut album, An Impeccable Shine. On the heels of his critically successful 2008 debut album, his sophomore record, Talkin’ on a Bus, was released in July, 2010. Produced by Edmonton’s Barry Allen, it was one of the most highly anticipated albums to come out of Alberta, reaching the top of the CKUA charts for eight weeks during the summer. The album made numerous top albums of 2010 lists. His third album, featuring 20 songs was released today. The original songs include the awardwinning “Poundmaker” and the cover songs dip into the songbooks of some of J.R.’s greatest influences, including fellow Canadians Robbie Robertson and The Band, and Neil Young. J.R. returns to Camrose with the Front Porch Roots Revue, performing the "Up On Cripple Creek" tribute to The Band at the Bailey Theatre on Friday, Jan. 25. After a run of successful dates in 2012, the ensemble has been reunited for an encore performance.

City appoints peace officer Former Camrose Bylaw Enforcement Officer Tracey Struz was sworn in as a Community Police Officer by Inspector Lee Foreman of the Camrose Police Service Jan. 2. Discussion on the change has been ongoing for some time in an effort to create a more efficient and effective service to the public. Most other municipalities in the province have moved to this structure, mainly due to limited enforcement capability for Bylaw Enforcement Officers. City manager Damian Herle said the change from Bylaw Enforcement Officer to Community Peace Officer status will create efficiencies in service

Ecumenical Prayer Service at St. Francis Xavier Church Jan. 20 Local congregations, representing numerous Christian denominations, will come together for an Ecumenical Celebration of the Word of God on Sunday, Jan. 20. The service, which will be held as part of the area’s observance of the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, will take place at St. Francis Xavier Church, 5010-48A Avenue, Camrose, beginning at 7 p.m. Joe McMorrow, Pastoral Associate at St. Francis Parish, will deliver the message. Special music will be provided by the choir, SETH. Pastors of member congregations have been invited to participate. Begun in 1908, the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is celebrated each year in cities and towns across the country and around the world. The theme for the 2013 observance is “What Does God Require of Us?” (cf. Micah 6:6-8) The theme and text for each year’s observance of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity are chosen and prepared by representatives of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and representatives of the World Council of Churches. The Camrose service is sponsored by The Camrose and District Ministerial Association. The public is cordially invited.

Herle also addressed the question of who is allowed to present at public hearings by noting the Municipal Government Act requires council to hear any person, group of persons or person representing them who claim to be affected by the proposed bylaw. "There has to be a connection between the person speaking and the effect the bylaw that is being discussed would have on them," said Herle. Right information

Councillor Greg Wood said one of the things he struggles with is what happens after the public hearing is over. He suggested if there is a contentious issue that is being discussed, it may be wise for council to take a breather before giving the bylaw third and final reading so that it can make the best decision based on all the information that is presented. "There are going to be examples where we have imperfect information. The process we have is imperfect right now because we have groups showing up that haven't had the proper dialogue when they are in opposition. The only way to stop us forcing a decision that maybe isn't in the best interest is to put a mandatory breather in there saying that third reading will happen at the next meeting." Councillor Wood suggested as well that it might also be useful to require participants who are for or opposed to a certain bylaw to participate in an open house so that before they show up for a public hearing with council they are better prepared and know what they want to say. Councillor Gerry Galenza said he doesn't want council to get placed into the role at open houses that it isn't prepared to take on. "What I am concerned about is that they (the developer) is allowed to have an open house and certainly councillors are allowed to come and listen to the people. I just don't want to get into a situation where we are the mediator at the open house and we have got one group and another group and well, we have to make a decision, let's mediate this and send it back and forth." All the rules of the public hearing will be presented to participants in bullet form before the proceedings are scheduled to get underway.

Edmonton songwriter Peter North was so fed up with no National Hockey League games this season, he wrote a song about it. "Hockey Talk Blues," a remake of a Hank Williams classic "Honky Tonk Blues" was penned by Peter to show his frustrations with the NHL. The league has since agreed to start later this month. "I took Hank Williams' song and rewrote it using words that described the frustration hockey fans were feeling at the time," explained Peter. "The guys laughed about it and then said they wanted to play it. Three guys from the Front Porch band recorded it and it has received plenty of air play on CBC." The Front Porch Roots Revue Band will soon be familiar with Camrose music fans. Band member J.R. Shore is performing at Scalliwags in the Rose City Roots Music Society concert series at 8 p.m. on Jan. 19. Front Porch will be performing a tribute to The Band at the Bailey Theatre on Jan. 25, beginning at 8 p.m. Peter is a music promoter who works with Alberta and Western Canadian artists. "We received free studio time to record it, so we had to do it,"

added Peter. "We got Tim Hus, who is a Stompin' Tom Connors kind of a guy, to sing a verse for us. It's pretty tongue in cheek and comedic, but people really enjoy it." Tim has played at the Big Valley Jamboree in the past and

has a local following as well, which added to the number of air plays it received. "It has spread throughout Canada. It's fun and has been great for the Front Porch Band as it performs the tribute songs," said Peter.

The gloves are off and the battle has begun. Travel Alberta and Big Valley Jamboree have created a contest for small Alberta communities to rally the troops in order to bring country music to their neighbourhoods. The Small Town Saturday Night event encourages rural Alberta to showcase local tourism. For the second straight year, Travel Alberta has partnered with Camrose's Big Valley Jamboree to celebrate Alberta's rural stories by offering music fans a chance to win a day-long country music celebration on April 27 in the Small Town Saturday Night competition. The prize includes a concert headlined by Canadian country music artist Chad Brownlee and a songwriters' circle hosted by Alberta's Clayton Bellamy featuring Alee, Bobby Wills and Tenille. BVJ's master of ceremonies Danny Hooper will emcee the event. The winning community can also use the event as a fundraiser to support a local charity or municipal initiative of its choice. Last year, the Town of Legal raised $93,000 for the Friends of Legal School Society to build a new playground for the community. "Our rural towns are filled with the spirit of hospitality and cooperation – welcoming places where neighbours help each other get the job done. We're asking communities to come together once again to show off their talent and creativity for the chance to host the 2013 Small Town Satur-

day Night celebration," said Christine Cusanelli, minister of Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation, in her address to welcome back the event. "After the tremendous response from across Alberta last year, I'm excited to see how communities pull out all the stops to share their hometown pride with the rest of our province." Here are some tips on how to enter the contest. Choose a venue within your community where the event will be hosted. Round up a group of passionate people in your neighbourhood, who would be excited to put together a two-minute video showcasing what makes your community a great place to visit. Hint: think Travel Alberta style. Upload your video to YouTube and submit your official entry form. Then invite your friends, neighbors and the entire community to vote for your video online. Each

vote counts, so get everyone involved. The deadline for entries is on Thursday, Feb. 28. A panel of judges will view the eligible entries and select the top 10 submissions, based on their depiction of community spirit and involvement, passion for local tourism experiences and events, local characters and creativity. The top 10 finalists will be announced on March 5 and this will be followed by a public vote for the grand-prize winner. This portion of the contest ends on March 25. The winning community will be announced on March 28. More than 200 communities in Alberta qualify for the contest, which is open to communities of 20,000 people or fewer. Pedersens mark end of an era in Camrose By Dan Jensen

One of the oldest and most well-known downtown Camrose businesses has changed hands. Paul and Carol Davies Pedersen marked the end of an era Jan. 7 when they presented the keys of their business, Pedersen's Florists, to Jennifer Davis and Stephen Shields. Pedersen's Florists is an offshoot of Pedersen's Market Greenhouse, which was started by Paul's parents, Bernard and Edith Pedersen, in 1936. "My parents ran the greenhouse next to the golf course for about 20 years before getting into the business of designing in the 1950s," said Paul. The floral business moved downtown to where LaScala Jewelers is now in 1979 and to its current location in 1982. "I haven't counted how many designs we have done but I know that I have worked on bridal bouquets for the daughters of the women I designed bouquets for back in the 1970s," said Carol, who is a Canadian accredited master florist. "It's even longer for Paul, who has worked with three generations." Paul started designing floral arrangements when he was 14 years of age. "I was watching my parents work on a wreath one night and decided I wanted to do that myself, so I picked up a frame and started putting the moss into it," said Paul. "After that my dad came over and started showing me how to do it right." Paul has always found great enjoyment in working with flowers. "It was never something that my parents forced me to do. It was something I wanted to do," he said. Paul designed his first casket spray when his parents were off on a trip to Denmark. "I got up at four in the morning to do the spray and it took me four hours to complete," he said. "It was so sturdy that the director of the funeral home at the time said they could have dropped it from a five-storey building and it would have still held together." Paul also remembers mak-

the floral business in the 1970s Paul worked at Stelco (now Evraz Camrose Works) for 15 years as a payroll officer. "I had a great working relationship there," said Paul. "I was able to work there and still help my parents when things got really busy around Christmas and Mother's Day. " Paul and Carol have been highly involved in floral organizations like FTD and Flowers Canada, whether attending conventions or participating in design competitions. They have also been active members of several organizations, helping their community in whatever way they can. Carol has served on the Camrose Kinette Club and Augustana scholarship committee and is currently president of the Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak, while Paul, who is also a Rotarian, has served two terms as president of the Camrose Chamber of Commerce and as a member of the Camrose Volunteer Fire Department. As a member of the City Center Camrose board from 1996 until this past December, Paul was chair of the beautification committee, which is responsible for maintaining all the downtown planters. "I have been caring for the plants in the planters since they

were installed 25 years ago," said Paul. Along with delivering flowers to the hospital and homes, Pedersen's Florists has seven plant maintenance contracts. "I put the original plants in the new St. Mary's Hospital when it was built and the Smith Clinic when it was built," said Paul. "I put about 140 plants into the Smith Clinic." Paul and Carol have always enjoyed working with the customers and know that the relationships that they have built over the years has been a major reason for the success they have enjoyed. They have served Danish pastries at an open house every December as

a way of thanking customers for their support and have provided carnations to every woman who receives a mammogram at St. Mary's Hospital. "Helping the customers get what they need and being with them throughout all of life's major occasions has been extremely gratifying," said Carol. Paul and Carol made the decision to put their business on the market this past spring after the run-up to Mother's Day that saw them put in 15-hour work days. "We started to recognize that we were getting older and that we should start to change our lives a bit," said Paul. "We thought we might have to wait quite a while before the business sold like some of our friends had to do but we were pleasantly surprised when a buyer came along as quickly as they did." Paul and Carol have been helping Jennifer and Stephen learn the ropes of the business, and have offered to stay on to help for the next three months. "I have already taken them to see the supplier and shown them how to pick out the freshest product, and will help them to pick out poinsettias before next Christmas," said Paul. "I will do anything I can to help them because I don't want to see a year from now that the business is up for sale again." The Pedersens are delighted that a young couple wants to take over their business and keep the tradition going. "We wish them every success in the future," said Carol. "The fact they have decided to keep the same name means a lot to us." Paul and Carol are looking forward to pursuing interests like gardening, sewing and photography that they haven't had much time for as business owners. "We will probably take a few short trips around Alberta but it is quite unlikely that we will be going to Arizona in the winter," said Carol. "That's simply not our style." City Center Camrose will be presenting a memento to Paul and Carol for their service to City Center Camrose in the near future.

Bull Congress at CRE this weekend By Dan Jensen

It doesn't have the same high profile as the annual Running of the Bulls in Spain but there is no discounting the importance of the annual Canadian Bull Congress. "It is a must attend event on my calendar," said Steve Kushnerik, a purebred Simmental breeder from the Round Hill area and the chair of the Canadian Bull Congress committee. "I am always looking for bulls for my own stock and the Bull Congress is a way for me to see what is out there." The Canadian Bull Congress (this year scheduled for Jan. 18 and 19) is one of the most popular events on the Canadian Regional Exhibition calendar, drawing breeders from across Alberta and parts of Saskatchewan. In terms of prestige it ranks right up there with the FarmFair and Agribition. "We have an average attendance of around 7,500 and if we aren't sold out we are very close to it," said Kushnerik. "About 12 different breeds of cattle are represented along with more than 250 livestock exhibitors and product and service related businesses." Continued learning The Canadian Bull Congress stresses continued learning in the beef industry through the school education program which will be held on Jan. 17, prior to the official start of the Congress. Past CBCs have given students the opportunity to paint a cow, learn how tagging works and visit a model cow displayed by the Camrose Veterinary Clinic in conjunction with the University of Alberta. "The school-aged children learn the value of farm life and what it takes to raise an animal safely," said Kushnerik. The popular 4-H program starting at 9:00 a.m., Jan. 19, will provide information on judging animals and animal welfare. "We always have a good turnout of 4-H kids," said Kushnerik. "We have sessions designed for 4-H members with little or no judging experience, 4-H members with some judging

Bruce Butler with a prize bull at the 2012 Canadian Bull Congress.

experience, and 4-H members who are experienced judges." In a bit of a change from previous years, 4-H heifers will be shown in the main barn with the purebreds. "We decided to just change it up this year and see how it pans out," said Kushnerik. Shows Canadian Bull Congress will give breeders a chance to match their cattle up against those from other operations in a pen of three purebred heifer show, a single purebred heifer show, Rancher's Choice single bull show, senior bull show and pen of three bull show. A herd bull walk and 4-H heifer project show will get underway at 1:00 p.m., Jan. 18. "The competitions are good for breeders because it allows them to show what they have to

offer," said Kushnerik. "If potential buyers see something they like at a pen of three heifer show, for example, they will want to hunt up the person who is showing that animal at the congress or try to attend that exhibitor's private sale. "A lot of people go to the farms to look at herds after the Bull Congress is over." One of the most popular events at the Bull Congress is the Bull-Nanza, which gives ticket buyers a chance to win a bull valued at more than $7,000. "We usually sell out of tickets for that fairly early so we advise people who want to be part of it to get theirs early," said Kushnerik. International visitors The Canadian Bull Congress will once again welcome

five visitors from the United Kingdom, including Gerry Smyth, who manages a pedigree Angus farm in Ireland, and Freda Kinnarney, who is involved in organizing Ireland's largest agriculture show in Tullamore. Kinnarney feels the congress is a good way to establish links between producers. "The Tullamore show and the Canadian Bull Congress have enjoyed great relationships," she said. "We had people from Camrose and area come over to Ireland to judge cattle at our shows." The Canadian Bull Congress continues to market internationally and market new opportunities for Alberta and Canadian producers. "It's amazing to know that over the pond producers know about the Congress and have

ties to some of our exhibitors," said the official congress brochure. "We will continue to strengthen our commitment to this Canadian/Alberta cattle industry by promoting the world's best beef wherever and whenever possible." A special guest at the Congress in the morning of Jan. 18 will be federal agriculture minister Gerry Ritz, who will explain what Canada is doing to establish cattle markets in China. Banquet The Steak Challenge and Taste of Alberta Beef Banquet, starting at 6:00 p.m., Jan. 18, will be followed by a live auction for the STARS Air Ambulance program. Items to be sold include a steak barbecue for 50, a limited edition painting, pencil sketch print, credenza with a herd of Angus painted on the table top, Charolais tanned cow hide, and a helicopter ride for two with hotel accommodations. Banquet entertainment will feature Don Bryan. "We're looking at another banquet sell out," said Kushnerik. "As of today we had less than 100 tickets still available." John Chomiak, of Chomiak Charolais, believes the Canadian Bull Congress is a fantastic event in an outstanding venue, in a super cattle country location. "We are in the purebred Charolais breeding business, catering primarily to the commercial cow people," said Chomiak. "The Congress, in addition to attracting the local cattle people, attracts attention on the national and international scale. This exposure is vital to our business and besides, this event is compacted into approximately three days, which makes it so much more desirable to participate in. We are always anxious to be involved, as this event has expanded our marketing network. This has been, and we believe in the continuing years, will continue to have a positive influence in marketing our quality bulls which we raise. We do everything possible to ensure that we do not miss such an outstanding event."

Government inviting local input for Budget 2013 Kevin Sorenson, M.P., Crowfoot

Happy New Year to everyone and may 2013 be a prosperous one for you and your family. The good news so far this year is that Canada’s largest trading partner, the United States, has avoided the so-called ‘fiscal-cliff’ of tax increases and program spending cuts. This is an early hopeful economic sign for all of us in 2013. In our province and our Crowfoot riding, we have strong and informed political views. Canadians know of our political reputation and our historically formidable policy positions. We tend to be more fiscally conservative – we want to pay as we go – and avoid deficit financing when possible. We know what needs to be done and we are

always willing to do our share of the heavy lifting. Recently, we are known for the wealth of much needed energy resources in our oil-sands. Years ago, Albertans shuddered to think of the amount of hard work it would be if the world ever came calling for these energy reserves. The world is calling on us to sell them our oil and natural gas. While we have traditionally needed only one customer – the United States – today, the offers from other prospective customers are very attractive. I will add that many economists say that agriculture is and will increasingly be the next great wealth generator for jurisdictions that can serve this strong market. As we know, agriculture is Alberta’s second strongest industry! This sketch of the kind of

strong economic leadership that our province is providing Canada in our generation – and for the foreseeable future, is my lead-up to asking you to make your voices heard in advance of the federal government’s upcoming budget. As your Member of Parliament, I have always had the benefit of my constituents sharing with me – in generous and sometimes certain terms – what we want the Government of Canada doing with our hardearned tax dollars. I am inviting all of my constituents to provide our local input for the upcoming Federal Budget in 2013 to the federal Finance Department website’s online pre-budget consultation at www.fin.gc.ca. Our Conservative government is focused on the economy. Budget 2012 is helping

to grow Canada’s economy and create jobs. Nearly 900,000 net new jobs have been created in Canada since July 2009 (90% full-time and 75% private sector) and Canada has the best economic growth record among all G-7 countries. Canadians across the country are sending in their views on the best ways to strengthen Canada’s economy with progrowth ideas as part of the next federal budget. In the Conservative National Caucus in Ottawa, as your MP for Crowfoot, I have been very outspoken calling for our return to a balanced budget. I hope my constituents ‘back me up’ and participate in the prebudget consultation. I invite you to provide your responses to the following questions:

Are there measures we can take to strengthen our economy in the face of global economic threats? Are there any cost-neutral or low-cost measures to further solidify our economic recovery and position Canada to prosper over the long-term? In what areas should we look for more efficient and effective spending? How can the Government further encourage private sector growth and leadership in the economy? If you have any questions or concerns regarding this or previous columns you may write me at 4945-50th Street, Camrose, Alberta, T4V 1P9, call 780-6084600, toll-free 1-800-665-4358, fax 780-608-4603 or e-mail Kevin.Sorenson.C1@parl.gc.ca.

Kodiaks' winning streak snapped By Murray Green

The Camrose Kodiaks' seven game winning streak was snapped like a dry twig by the previously tame Lloydminster Bobcats on Jan. 4. The Bobcats mauled the Kodiaks 5-1 when they scored four straight tallies in the later part of the contest. Lloydminster recently underwent a shake-up, especially off the ice during the holiday break, which turned the cats into wild animals. Unfortunately, it was at the Kodiaks' expense. The Bobcats parted ways with coach Ryan Parent, who led them to the northern division basement. He was also the director of hockey operations. Former Camrose Kodiaks' coach Garry VanHereweghe is the new general manager for the remainder of the season. Kyle Tapp is now the interim coach. Lloydminster opened the

scoring with the only goal of the first period. Camrose tied the match early in the second when Nolan Marshall connected on a Luc Vandale feed. The Bobcats regained the lead with about three minutes left in the period. A power play goal just 41 seconds in the third set the Kodiaks on their heels. Goalie Matt Gibney stopped 21 of 26 shots in the Camrose net. The Kodiaks were not without chances as they outshot the Bobcats 30-26. The Kodiaks put up a fight the next night, but it was the Calgary Mustangs who rode away with two points in a 3-2 contest, Jan. 5. After a scoreless first period, the Kodiaks hit the scoreboard when Marshall set up Vandale in the middle frame. Calgary answered back on a power play opportunity and then went ahead for good with just two seconds left

on the clock in the second. The Mustangs added to the lead in the third before Nelson Gadoury replied for the Kodiaks. Camrose fired 42 shots at the Mustangs, but goalie Ravi Dattani was equal to the task. He was named the star of the game for shutting down the Kodiaks. Devin McDonald turned away 22 of the 25 shots he faced for the Kodiaks. The Kodiaks will be playing the next six games away from the EnCana Arena. They take on the Drumheller Dragons on Jan. 18, the Spruce Grove Saints on Jan. 19, the Calgary Mustangs on Jan. 22, the Canmore Eagles on Jan. 25, the Okotoks Oilers on Jan. 26 and the Calgary Canucks on Jan. 30 to close the month. Camrose finally plays at home on Feb. 1 and 2 when the Eagles return for two games, beginning at 7:30 p.m. each night.

Men's Augustana basketball team focuses on strong second semester By Murray Green

The Augustana Vikings men's basketball squad faced a bit of a roller coaster ride in the first half. It went from being a nationally ranked team to a 5-4 club. "It didn't go as well as we would have liked it to go, but it is still the best start we have had since I've been here," said veteran Shayn Bruney. "It set us up for a good second half. We are going in with an attitude that we are the team to beat." The Vikings started off red hot and then cooled when they lost a couple of games they should have won. "We felt confident going into the season. When we were ranked high it gave everyone a little more confidence," said Shayn. "We are more familiar with being the underdogs and filling that role is easier for us. Anytime we won in the past it was classed as an upset. A few losses have given us the opportunity to get hungry again and opponents will underestimate us again, like they usually do." Shayn believes the Vikings are still the team to beat. "We are the stronger team in the north. Only one team from the north is above us right now and that is Concordia (with a 6-3 record). We feel we can win all of the rest of the games. It's my last year, and I want to win the ACAC championships and go to nationals."

The road to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference playoffs started during the holiday break. "Most of the players trained hard during the break to prepare for the second half. I worked with a personal trainer and built up some extra strength and the other guys worked out as well. We are in shape for the second half," said Shayn, who has 118 points in nine games this season. "I stayed in Edmonton because they have an open gym for training and playing. The steps we needed to take have already been taken. We are ready to go." The Vikings are currently running a high school camp and tournament, as well as playing some exhibition games. "We have had camps before and it is rewarding to see these guys improve," explained Shayn. "They have taken the things we have worked on and are better players. I remember seeing number 15 on Camrose (CCHS Trojan Jordan Nickel) when he was 5'7" and now he is huge, taller than I am. Teaching in the clinic has given me the opportunity to see the players develop. It's fun. I stress the fact that we are student athletes. School is so important and it comes first. As much as basketball is important to me, school is still above it. I want to pass that message on to the high school students. It takes many hours of library work and

studying to be successful in your classes. I want them to be prepared for that." Taking basketball, or any sport, away from a student is the worst thing that can happen to an athlete. "It would be just devastating if I lost basketball. I study hard in order to play the sport I love," said Shayn. "I just want these students to understand how important school really is. Basketball is a high second." The players at the high school camp are talented. "I play with them a little. I tell them they are good enough to play for any college team. But, if they want to play for Augustana, they need to work on this and that," added Shayn. "It takes a full summer of training to make the jump from high school to the university level. It gives them a unique prospective on where we see ourselves and where they have to get to." The camp also helps the Augustana players with conditioning and getting back into game situations. "Playing NAIT is good because it gives us some meaningful competition," said Shayn. "I encourage everyone to come and watch our games. The crowds we have here are the reason I came here in the first place. Our fans are the best. I wish we had a camp like this where college athletes talked to us when I was in high school."

Augustana hockey team pulls within one point of NAIT By Murray Green

The Augustana Vikings hockey team scored four straight goals to emerge victorious 5-3 against the Grant MacEwan Griffins on Jan. 9. Craig Cornelsen garnered a hat trick to lead the Vikings over the mystical ice creatures. All three tallies came on the power play as Augustana went four for seven with the extra man advantage. The hat trick gives Cornelsen 16 goals on the season. Defenceman Tanner Korchinski and captain Dan Hope netted single markers for the Vikings. The match was squared off at 2-2 after the first period and Augustana took the lead in the second for a 3-2 score after 40 minutes. Goalie Paul Kolida started in the net for the Vikings, but left after stopping two of four shots he faced. Joel Danyluk came in to turn away 15 of 16 shots. Augustana fired 31 shots at the Grant MacEwan net. The Vikings host the SAIT Trojans on Jan. 18 and the NAIT Ooks on Jan. 23 in the EnCana Arena, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Camrose. Basketball

Miquelon Lake Park celebrates snow day with winter activities

Fun day

Murray Green, Camrose Booster

Cross-country ski instructor Graeme Thain heads a train of jackrabbit skiers near the Stoney Creek Centre. The young skiers were learning to ski to prepare for the Camrose Ski Club's annual Ole Uffda Ski Loppet on Jan. 20. Following the jackrabbits' race at 10:40 a.m., the loppet will begin for adults.

By Murray Green Alberta will be celebrating a snow day on Jan. 20. Parks across the province will be open for winter activities for the entire family. Miquelon Lake Provincial Park, north of Camrose, will have a variety of family activities including snowshoeing, ice skating, snow broomball, a winter scavenger hunt and a snow carving competition. The action takes place from 1 to 4 p.m. Free hot chocolate will be served around a campfire. In Camrose, the annual Ole Uffda Loppet will be held on Jan. 20 at the Stoney Creek Centre. Ski package information is available between 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Action begins with Ole’s Fun Loopski for all children at 10:40 a.m. The 5 km, 15 km and 30 km race starts at 11 a.m. The 1.3 km and 3 km events start at 11:01 a.m. Race fees include a hot lunch from a local restaurant. You can also experience skiing at central Alberta's provincial parks. Grooming and track setting are underway for cross-country skiing at Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area, near Edmonton. There are 65 kilometres

City council has given first reading to a bylaw to redistrict the land for the proposed new City Hall from the current designation of Institutional to Direct Control. The new designation would allow council to control the development permit process and conditions (setbacks and architectural controls) placed on the development. The need to redistrict came as a surprise to Councillor John

Howard, who expressed shock that council wasn't told in all its meetings with the architect that the law would have to be changed to make the new development work. He said the City will need to be prepared to get an earful at the forthcoming open house from developers who have had their requests to go to Direct Control turned down. City manager Damian Herle told council plans for the new City Hall do not meet the requirements of downtown's overlay plan.

"We can't build downtown and meet the neighbouring guidelines." Council is guided by the Municipal Development Plan with regard to the use and development of land with any particular Direct Control district as designated under the land use bylaw. Second and third reading of the redistricting bylaw is scheduled to be given following a public hearing on Feb. 4.

BRCF presents grant to Camrose Association for Community Living The Battle River Community Foundation (BRCF) has granted $1000 to the Camrose Association For Community Living (CAFCL). This grant is made possible by the Battle River Community Foundation’s Community Fund which was created to support charitable projects in the Battle River area. This grant will be used for Sibshops. Sibshops: an important and innovative initiative provides an opportunity for brothers and sisters, ‘siblings’ of children with health and developmental concerns to make friends in a fun, uplifting atmosphere. Siblings participate in activities with other siblings facilitated by a social worker; which provides a natural peer support setting for the group participants. Sibshops provide a common place of understanding and support of both the enrichment and challenges involved with having a brother or sister with a health or developmental concern. CAFCL is a vital, community focused organization dedicated to assisting people with disabilities, people with acquired brain injury and families at risk. They provide individualized and responsive support to the people in their service to develop skills and build quality of life. Their belief is that each person should be an accepted and participating

community member and CAFCL wants to help make that vision a reality. CAFCL, founded in 1962, has a long history of success in the community, currently with 110 employees and serving over 300 individuals. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects and organizations in East Central Alberta, such as CAFCL, which benefit local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Contributions to the Battle River Community Foundation are permanently invested in endowment funds,

currently valued in excess of $6.8 million. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created these endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects in the Battle River area. Some funding is also made available annually by generous donors who make flow-through gifts to the Battle River Community Foundation.

ing to meet the C-3 designation and that the residential property at 44 Grand Park Crescent, which is currently used for parking contrary to a council decision on Nov. 18, 2002, will not be used to fulfill the C-3 requirement. The Rathnavalus also expressed concerns about the volume of traffic and the restoration and maintenance of the safety and beauty of the area. "The work already being done by the city in this regard is to be acknowledged. In spite of these efforts, satisfactory solutions have not been found. The residential lot at the end of Grand Park Crescent is being used for parking. The desired reduction of the volume and speed of traffic has not been achieved." In a public hearing presentation to council prior to final reading of the bylaw, Margaret Rathnavalu said the residents of Grand Park Crescent consider their area to be unique and want assurances that the City will protect it. She stated it is not the responsibility of residents to provide parking.

"I don't know if there is enough parking for the businesses that are there. It would give us comfort to know that there is sufficient parking on the shopping centre site." James Anderson, from 109 Grandview Crescent, expressed concerns about the volume of traffic in the neighbourhood, which he said has become heavier in recent years. He added that many of the residents bought into the area to be close to the walking trails, and that council should be careful not to distract from one of the city's prize jewels. Boston Pizza owner Kevin Gurr said members of his staff use the property at 44 Grand View Crescent for parking. Kevin Pratt, owner of Grand Park Liquor Mart, said there is more congestion on the street as a result of the nearby apartment building than there is as a result of the Grand Park Plaza. Council was encouraged to hear that residents of the area were willing to work with the City to push along any needed improvements.

A bylaw to redistrict the Grand Park Plaza shopping centre from C-4 Neighbourhood Commercial District to C-3 Highway Commercial District was given second and third readings by City council Jan. 7. Acting director of planning and development Shelley Munro told council the bylaw was a housekeeping item to bring the property into compliance with the current land use bylaw. She said the property was originally districted as C-3 but somehow has shown up on maps as C-4. "To be transparent we want the paper trail to show that we have corrected this, so in the future someone who pulls out the map will be able to see how it went from C-4 to C-3. "The current usage will stay the same." City advertisement of the proposed zoning change brought a letter from Larry and Margaret Rathnavalu, from 28 Grand Park Crescent, who wished to be assured that the property being redistricted has sufficient park-

Chev Traverse New gathering space

By Dan Jensen

The 2013 Chevrolet Traverse crossover-utility vehicle at McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC offers families a new gathering space with greater style, refinement and safety. "The new Traverse is a family vehicle without compromise," said McClellan Wheaton dealer principal Will McClellan. "It is more capable than many sportutility vehicles, with as much room as a minivan, and better functionality than both. The Traverse is clever, capable and confident – and there when you need it most." New design

The 2013 Chevrolet Traverse has a new, athletic exterior design, complemented by a more expressive front end that introduces a new face for Chevrolet crossover vehicles. The front has a new shape supported by a powerdome hood, a three-bar upper and two-bar lower grille design, new lamps, chrome accents around the grille and fog lamps, and sculpted front corners similar to the Malibu sedan. The new design captures the overall character of Chevy's new car lineup, for a consistent family resemblance. "We have injected a stronger presence into the Traverse exterior by focusing on the details," said Phillip Zak, GM director of exterior design. "The small but important changes give it a more vibrant personality that more closely reflects the lifestyles of the families who rely on the

Traverse to get them through their busy lives." At the rear, redesigned lamps and the licence plate pocket are positioned in the new liftgate for a sportier look. New family gathering space

Space is the hallmark of the Traverse interior. With its classleading spaciousness, comfortable and flexible seating for up to eight adults, and more cargo-carrying capacity than any other vehicle in its segment, the 2013 Chevy Traverse builds on these established attributes by offering an interior environment with new features and refined appointments. Upgraded materials include soft-touch surfaces on the instrument panel and front door uppers, contrasting stitching, chrome and silver accents, and available blue ambient light that flows through the cabin. A new centre stack showcases a colour touch radio with the available Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system. MyLink allows customers to seamlessly integrate their smartphones for hands-free calling through the audio system and Bluetooth streaming of popular internet radio favourites Pandora and Stitcher. The centre stack also has large and illuminated climate controls that are easier to use and have a more upscale feel. The front seats feature articulating head restraints that can be adjusted up or down and fore and aft for greater comfort. The

eight-way power passenger seat includes leather trim. New wood trim treatments are standard on LT and LTZ. Parent test

The Traverse passes the parent test with three rows of seating standard on all models, flexible seating configurations, class-leading people and cargo-carrying capacity, and family-friendly entertainment and other features. Traverse's second-row seat comes with a pair of captain's chairs or a three-passenger bench. Each incorporates Traverse's child-friendly, second-row SmartSlide feature that enables unobstructed access to the third row bench seat with one hand. The third-row seat can comfortably accommodate three adult passengers. Traverse's 691 litres of cargo room behind its third row is larger than many full-size utility vehicles. Traverse also has easy-to-operate safety belts, up to 12 cup holders, and an available rear-seat entertainment system. Car-like ride

Traverse has a long 3,019 mm wheelbase with a wide 1,721 mm front track and 1,712 mm rear track – a combination that enables smooth, stable ride and handling characteristics. Efficiency in the Traverse comes from a technically advanced 3.6 litre V-6 with fuelsaving direct injection technology and continuously variable valve timing. It is mated with a six-speed automatic transmission with improved shift feel that

results in more confident acceleration when the driver needs additional power to enter the highway or pass another motorist. The engine is SAE-certified at 288 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque with dual exhaust. Its direct injection fuel delivery helps produce power similar to many V-8 engines. The transmission controls have been revised to produce quicker and more consistent shifts. Along with additional transmission hardware changes, the Traverse is expected to continue to deliver among the best fuel economy ratings of any eightpassenger (FWD) utility vehicle. Ride and handling improvements have been made through the use of rebound springs in the front struts that increase roll control. New shock valving has been employed for low-velocity control to deliver a smoother ride at lower speeds. The available intelligent allwheel-drive (AWD) system provides increased traction on slippery roads by actively managing the torque distribution between the front and rear axles, based on factors such as wheel speed, throttle and surface conditions. There is no driver intervention; the system automatically decides how much torque to apply and delivers it to the wheels that have the best traction. Safety

The Traverse is among the safest vehicles on the road today, previously earning top honours

Graeme Davidson McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC and recognition from leading third-party organizations and in government crash testing. For 2013 it enhances its safety reputation with the industry's first front centre air bag. It is engineered to provide additional restraint to drivers and front passengers in far-side impact crashes, where the affected occupant is on the opposite, non-struck side of the vehicle. When a severe impact occurs, the air bag deploys in milliseconds from the inboard side of the driver's seat and inflates between the driver and front passenger, providing added protection for both front occupants. See the 2013 Chevrolet Traverse at McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC at 385048 Avenue, Camrose. Phone 780672-2355 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

The pains and gains of migration Editor's note: Many residents of our community, our province and our country have moved here from other places. Some have moved numerous times and each move has been an emotional experience which might have included eager anticipation, reluctance and fear, and/or weariness at the thought of again having to leave old friends and make new ones. Juan Arciniegas, a Gr ade 11 student at Our Lady of Mount Pleasant School, has experienced many moves. In his story below he has written of his migrating experiences and how he turned the pain of moving into positive thoughts of gain. It is h oped that his story, which appears below, will help other migrants adjust to change. Hopefully, it will also help those who never move to have empathy for those who do and be helpful in the transition. CHANGE By Juan Arciniegas, Grade 11 Student, Our Lady of Mount Pleasant School I have undergone many changes in my life and have had to adapt to various situations. It all began at the age of four when I migrated from South America. The first stop of my journey was in Salt Lake City, Utah. I observed the people and absorbed the new language; it was all new for me. I lived there for four years; I made friends and moved to a bigger house. All of a sudden I found out we were moving up north, to the great big

country of Canada, to Toronto, Ontario. Adapting to a new environment is easy for a child: new house, new neighbourhood, new people, new school. I was enjoying the idea of being able to see new places. It was intriguing to me. I lived there for two years. I barely had time to appreciate the new friends I made, leaving Toronto for Calgary. I was scared to go to a new place; this time I wasn't so excited about moving; I remember crying over this new move. I had to repeat the process yet again: new school, new home, new area, new friends. At this point I had had enough; I hoped we would never have to move again. I would ask my parents, "Can we stay here forever?" I was at an age where I was more aware of my surroundings. I began to realize who I was, to see where I fit in, to whom I can relate, where I'm most comfortable. I started junior high in Calgary. I loved it and never missed a single day of school, always was excited to see my friends. I was living in a bubble; my school was right across the street; I lived close to all the stores and restaurants to which I could just walk. I became attached. When I received the news that we were moving yet again, I couldn't believe it, having to do the same thing again: leave all my friends, my lifestyle to which I had become accustomed. I was extremely reluctant to move again and felt sad and confused. But I didn't have much of a

choice; sometimes life doesn't go as planned. I lived there for two years and here I am, in Camrose. Moving here was the most difficult move I had to make. Initially I was taciturn, nervous and reminiscing on my old life. I almost closed my mind to making any friends and kept to myself a lot. I experienced what people are most afraid of: feeling alone. After a couple of years I realized I must come out of my hiding, reinvent myself, change my wardrobe, my hair and, most importantly, my mentality. I decided to embrace the change, and take advantage of the opportunity of being able to experience different societies and used it to shape my world view, and grew from that. I've lived here for four years and, hopefully, won't be moving again soon. But who knows where the wind will take me? Change is different for everyone and can be seen as a negative thing, which shouldn't be the case; you need to grow from it, whether the change is as simple as moving houses. Take the opportunity by the reins, and be in control of your life. Before you think about how difficult a change may be, reflect on how much others have had to endure. You can even help people who are going through a change, by welcoming them, encouraging them, and showing them that there is good in new experiences. Change can be intimidating but the benefits are grand and can help improve your life and point of view.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, b ut don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so y ou want to include all the important basics. Don’t use str ange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the w ord, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses , but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a pr ice also ser ves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential b uyers. Be sure to state the hours y ou can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with an y questions or prob lems you may have regarding adv ertising. Our professionally trained sales staff kno w the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to y ou. That’s why we’re here, to help y ou get the results you deserve.

Your unique (and anonymous) version of the 12 Days of Christmas was entertaining, inspiring, useful and delicious. I especially enjoyed the little booklet entitled, ‘Pondering’. After reading it, and pondering, I was sure that I had you pegged. Then you changed the handwriting on the card. That was clever. Did you enlist an elf to help with this deception? Ferintosh water safe

Alberta Environment has completed its review of the high turbidity water problem in Ferintosh. It was determined that the Village of Ferintosh did not do anything to cause this problem and followed all protocols in dealing with the problem. The turbidity resulted from deposited sediment in the line between Bashaw and Ferintosh, being drawn into our distribution system. The line, being constructed between Ferintosh and New Norway was being filled at the same time as the reservoir was drawing water in. Robbie Burns celebration Jan. 25 By Dan Jensen

Now that Christmas and New Year's is over, it's time for a celebration of a different sort. The Camrose Adult Learning Council will be paying tribute to Scotland's great poet, Robbie Burns, with music, laughter, humour, song and dance at the Norsemen Inn Friday, Jan. 25. "We're going to have a full program, including a special traditional Scottish dinner including Haggis," said Camrose Adult Learning Council's Adult Read and Write coordinator Arlene Simmons. The evening will also provide the opportunity to sample types of Scotch. The Robbie Burns celebration is the second in as many years for the Camrose Adult Learning Council. "We did this last year as well but we barely broke even," said Simmons. "We are hoping for better results this time." Robbie Burns was the oldest of seven children born to a struggling farmer and his wife. After his mother introduced him to Scottish folk songs, legends and proverbs, he began writing touching poems and songs. Some of his most famous songs include Auld Lang Syne (the song people sing at New Years), Ye Banks and Breaes of Bonnie Doon and My Love's Like a Red, Red Rose. His first book of poems was published in 1788. Funds raised from the celebration will be used by the Camrose Adult Learning Council to pay for extra tutoring, books for the CALC Family Literacy Program, and extra expenses that are decided on an individual basis, including temporary child care and temporary cab fare. The Camrose Adult Read and Write Program, in addition to providing volunteer tutoring, has an advanced program with paid tutors for those who need immediate help with upgrading their skills. "We have a lot of people who come to us who are on social services or employment insurance who need to upgrade their language skills before they can do their general equivalence diploma tests or apprenticeship program," said Simmons. "They need assistance and they need it immediately. The people we hire are usually retired teachers who can go in and provide help almost right away." The Family Literacy Program provides free books that are handed out to new parents and are delivered each Christmas along with gifts and food hampers. It also has people who teach literacy skills in individual homes through something called Building Blocks. "When our people go into the homes they take books and leave them so that there are reading resources in the home," said Simmons. Continued on page 33

Snowfalls keep graders busy over holidays By Murray Green

Camrose County public works manager Graham Backus reported that plowing and winging snow into the ditches occupied the first week of December with the second snow storm of the season. "Cleanup took until midweek. We incurred another dump just prior to the holiday break at Christmas and all machines worked up to and after Christmas Day," said Graham. "The crews did a stellar job of clearing roads and still were able to take part in the holiday celebrations." Council encouraged Graham to pass on thanks to the grader operators for their hard work around the holidays. Graham reported that the gravel hauling program has been going well. "We have gravelled about 80 miles so far. We hope to cover a lot of miles over the winter," Graham informed councillors on Jan. 8. Graham also updated council on the Ohaton transmission line and water connections. "All connections are complete. A question arose regarding this project and public works has inquired with Alberta Environment. The question being, now that we have connected into this line, it is no longer classified a transmission line, but it could be a distribution line. The operational requirements are quite different between the two," added Graham. Currently public works is operating it as a distribution line. "This is a worst case scenario, so we are covered off if Alberta Environment deems it a distribution system. Alberta Environment has endorsed us operating it as a distribution system until they come to a determination on its classification," Graham said. Graham indicated that his grader crew will be busy this summer with shoulder pulling, as per requests from many county ratepayers.

Child care and cab fare is provided by the Camrose Adult Learning Council on a temporary basis until other forms of assistance can be accessed. "Some of the people who are just starting with us need to figure out a way to get to the training that is offered and we help with that," said Simmons. Tickets for the Robbie Burns celebration may be purchased online at www.robbieburnsnight.weebly.com, or in person at Camrose Adult Learning Council, 4707-56 Street, Business IQ Training at 5044-52 Street, or Candler Art Gallery at 5002-50 Street.
