Council ratifies Police Association memorandum By Dan Jensen

Camrose Police officers are going to be receiving a healthy raise in 2012. A memorandum of agreement between the City of Camrose and the Camrose Police Association that provides a four per cent increase in remuneration for officers effective Jan. 1 and another one per cent increase December 31 was ratified by Camrose City council Jan. 23. The agreement also includes a four per cent increase retroactive to Jan. 1, 2011, and a threeand-one-half per cent increase effective Jan. 1, 2013. The total increase for officers over three years (2011-2013 ) is 13.5 per cent. "It is a good increase but it is what it is and we have to

move on," said City councillor Ray McIsaac. "I support ratification as opposed to going to mediation, which would be costly." Mayor Marshall Chalmers said the ratification states to the members of the Camrose Police Association that they are being treated fairly. "It is a substantial jump over three years but at the end of the day it is not anywhere close to being on the high side." "The actual dollars are in the middle of the pack." Statistics presented to council by City manager Damian Herle showed that the rates paid to police officers in Camrose are very comparable to what is being paid to officers in Lethbridge,

Medicine Hat, Lacombe, and Taber. The numbers also showed that Camrose officers have received a 23.40 per cent increase over the past five years, compared to 23.50 per cent for officers in Taber, 23.40 per cent for officers in Medicine Hat, 23 per cent for officers in Lethbridge and 22.03 per cent for officers in Lacombe. Over the last ten years, officers in Camrose have received pay increases of 42.63 per cent. The 2012 rate for a first class constable (someone with five years of experience who has met all the requirements of the service) is $85,393. A fifth class constable receives 65 per cent of the pay of a first class constable, while a staff sergeant makes 132 per cent of a first class constable.

Herle told council that differential in pay for officers from larger centres and those from smaller centres has become narrower in recent years. He added there have been some larger wage increases negotiated with not just police associations but also other areas of emergency services. "Their wage increases have been considerably higher than many other occupations. Examples of the above include the City of Lethbridge Police Association receiving a 9.25 per cent wage increase in 2010 and the City of Medicine Hat Police Association receiving a 7.40 per cent wage increase in 2009 and a 6.0 per cent wage increase in 2010. These types of wage increases

can have a ripple effect across the province." Camrose Police Chief Darrell Kambeitz, who participated in the negotiation process solely as an observer, said the negotiations between the police association and the City of Camrose were extremely professional. "Each side made compromises. The remuneration is adequate and fair in the policing universe." The Camrose Police Association currently consists of 27 officers, inclusive of the ranks of constables, sergeants and staff sergeant. Provincial legislation prohibits police officers from being unionized, however the Police Officers' Collective Bargaining Act allows them to form an association with collective bargaining rights.

Firefighters bring smiles to faces of children at Stollery By Dan Jensen

A trip to the Stollery Children's Hospital in Edmonton before Christmas proved to be an emotional and eye-opening experience for 12 members of the Camrose Fire Department Association. "I was impressed with the great quality of care the kids who are there receive," said Al Dunning, who was able to visit with one of his special needs students from Tofield School. "Once you have been there you really appreciate more what you have." Dale Stinson, who had his daughter spend some time at the Stollery a few years ago with a bladder problem, was impressed with the friendliness and the professionalism of the nurses and other workers they met. "We've all gone into hospitals where the staff don't show much interest in you. At the Stollery it is 100 per cent about the children and they do whatever they need to do to make sure they make them comfortable and get the job done." The visitors were able to present the children with 115 fire/rescue bears, which they purchased with the assistance of

several local businesses, including Crystal Glass Canada, Maximum Mechanical, D.S. Excava-

tion, J. Heating and Sheet Metal, Wildrose Co-op Camrose, Charderry Trucking, Timberline Roof-

ing, C.W. Drywall and Bodyfit Camrose. "It was great to be able to put

a smile on the faces of the kids," said Stinson. "It was a way to get them away from the rigmarole that they go through every day." Although the visit started in the "beach" – the Stollery's main playroom – it also included several of the wards. "When we told the nurses that we were from the Camrose Fire Association and wanted to present the bears to all the kids who were there, they escorted us to the intensive care and neo natal units and a few other places," said Dunning. "It brought a bit of a tear to the eye to see some of the things that the kids were having to go through." The trip to the Stollery Children's Hospital was proposed to the Camrose Fire Department Association by George Parnall, who has two children who have been there for surgery. "It was amazing to find out how many others were treated with such amazing care," said Parnall. "The idea was very well received by both the firefighters and the Stollery Hospital. We are thankful that we could bring smiles to the kids receiving treatment."

Time to step up wheat and barley marketing efforts By Murray Green

The Canadian Wheat Board in its present form will exist until only August 1. Western Canadian grain producers will have to find new ways to receive the most funds for their products. Local farmers attended a Government of Alberta session on Capturing Wheat and Barley Market Opportunities on Jan. 18 to learn what changes are on the horizon and how to adjust their marketing strategies to take advantage of the change. "Canada is part of a global wheat market. Wheat and barley prices in Western Canada will continue to be determined by world market fundamentals in an open market," said Ted Nibourg, a business management specialist at the Ag-Info Centre in Stettler. The one-day seminar focused on encouraging producers to be more proactive

in determining pricing and deliveries for themselves. "Contractual arrangements will increase in importance as farmers market their wheat and barley," said Neil Blue, formerly of Hardisty. "Farmers will need to fully understand the terms, conditions and requirements of any contract that is signed." Blue, a market specialist for Alberta Agriculture from 1994 to 2008, said "Grain quality will be reflected in price premiums and discounts from base grades. These premiums and discounts will vary throughout the year and can play a large part in determining the final price of grain that is sold." It's all in the delivery. "I'm really excited about grain terminal partnerships. There will be minimal changes in grain delivery. The grain companies are here to do business. The grain industry companies and the new wheat board are buying

grain according to various prices and market opportunities," said Bill Chapman. "The Canadian Grain Commission, established by the Canada Grain Act, is still in place and maintains the authority to regulate grain handling and set standards for grades of grain in Canada." Bill has 27 years of experience with Alberta Agriculture. "You can't stand still. Get to know the people at the grain elevators, and sit down to make plans for delivery. The days are gone where they call you up and tell you when to deliver it," added Bill. "Take control and plan ahead. There are great opportunities going forward." Moving products from the prairies to the sea ports has always been key for producers. "The marketplace will determine how producer cars will fit into the overall grain handling system in the future," said Peter Kuperis, who is an expert

in domestic and international trade policies. "The grain handling and transportation system is expected to function in the same way it does for canola and non-board grains. Monitoring to ensure that the handling system and the market function properly is an important part of ensuring a smooth transition to open wheat and barley market. Using containers may be a good option for pulse producers." Peter said transportation is the key, but didn't know how the short line railways will exactly fit in. "Everyone has a right to a producer car. How that happens, I'm not sure. Finding producer car loading sites is a problem if you don't have access. If you can make the cars fit into the system, it can work. I'd like to see short line railways continue to be an option." The main players in the research and development

system will not be changing. "Funding will continue with a change in the levy structure to ensure the important work of the Western Grains Research Foundation, Canadian International Grains Institute and the Canadian Malting and Brewing Technical Centre continues," added Bill. Alberta Agriculture risk management specialist Bruce Viney summed up the session. "Knowing individual crop costs, break even price levels and return sensitivities can give producers the knowledge and confidence to act on their marketing and risk management plans." Ultimately, with more market variability, producers will need to implement risk management strategies to manage both their upside opportunities and downside risks to build a more competitive and sustainable operation.

Jump Start program helps enable kids to participate in activities By Dan Jensen

Fifty-four youth were able to participate in sporting, gymnastic and arts-related activities last year thanks to the Canadian Tire Jump Start program. "We were able to help them with registration costs, equipment and other costs," said Canadian Tire dealer and Camrose Jump Start committee member Dave Jewell. Canadian Tire Jump Start is dedicated to removing barriers, so children can participate in organized sport and recreation. "We see it as equipping kids for life, because participation in organized sport and recreation increases a child’s chance for success in life," said Jewell. "They discover and participate. They gain self-confidence. They develop self-esteem. They learn leadership skills. Their lives become richer." Since its formation three years ago, the Camrose Jump Start committee (Jewell, Jim Cook from Camrose Community Services, and Rees James from the Boys and Girls Club), has been able to assist over 200 youth. "The funds used to be distributed from the Edmonton office but we felt that it would be better if a committee of local people did it because they would be more familiar with the community's needs," said Jewell. Funds raised locally are sent to the Jump Start head office in Toronto, where they are double matched and then returned to the local Jump Start committee, which determines how the money is to be used. "It's a good deal for anyone who wants to do a car wash or anything else as a fundraiser," said Jewell. "You raise $1,000 and you are able to turn that amount into $3,000." The Camrose Swans and Roses Lions Club recently donated $500, which, by the time it is matched, will end up being $1,500. "We felt it made more sense to do it this way," said Swans and Roses Lions Club member Bettyann Sitler. "We're planning to do this again before the end of our year in June." In addition to helping individuals, Jump Start funds can be used to assist organizations that offer youth programming, as long as they are a registered charity. "We want to make sure that the funds are not just for sports but any youth activity," said Jewell. Canadian Tire Corporation and its vendors fund all the general and administrative expenses of the Canadian Tire Jump Start program. In addition, Canadian Tire Corporation and Sport Canada help fund Canadian Tire Jump Start program delivery expenses.

Teachers, community to engage in war of words By Dan Jensen

Battle River School Division teachers, support staff and administrators are about to engage in a war of words. The ATA Local will be hosting its first annual Letters for Literacy Scrabble tournament at the Camrose Farmers' Market, Saturday, Feb. 25. "We're hoping to have representation from 30 schools across the division," explained ATA Battle River Local 32 president and tournament organizer Jeff Myck. "We're going to be setting up about 15 to 20 tables." Schools and the head office will be asked to sponsor their representative(s) to a minimum of $50. Schools are being asked

to email the name of the sponsored teacher or support staff member to jmyck@brsd.ab.ca by Friday, Feb. 17. "We're going to be doing the tournament in a draw format and will be giving prizes for the top five spots," said Myck. The Scrabble tournament will also be open to members of the general public, who will be able to play for a small contribution. "If there are people in the mall who want to play as well, they are welcome," said Myck. "We'll be giving gift certificates to the top five players," said Myck. Money raised from the Scrabble tournament will be split fifty-fifty between Reading

University, a program offered in Camrose and Tofield each summer by the Battle River Community Foundation in partnership with Battle River School Division, as well as ABC Life Literacy Canada. "Literacy is an important issue and one of the pillars of the Battle River School Division," said Myck. Reading University is a summer literacy program designed to help young readers get the basics they need in order to succeed at school and beyond. The program was open by special invitation to children who need extra time and support to increase their basic literacy skills. "One of the goals of the

Battle River School Division is to have all students reading at their programmed level by the end of Grade 3, thus the Grades 2 and 3 students," said Reading University principal and Battle River School Division assistant superintendent Ray Bosh. "Reading University very much strengthens this goal." The Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta provides space and meals for the students, while the Camrose Adult Learning Council and the Camrose Adult Read and Write Program offer advice to parents on how to help their children to continue to read at home. ABC Life Literacy Canada

is a non-profit organization that inspires Canadians to increase their literacy skills. ABC Life Literacy Canada envisions a Canada where everyone has the skills they need to live a fully engaged life. Along with raising funds for worthy causes, the tournament will be a way for Battle River School Division teachers and school support staff to increase awareness of what they do. "It's going to get us out there and show the communities that we are not just stuck in the classrooms, that we also are involved in the community," said Myck. "We believe that interaction between teachers and the community is very important."

Boston Pizza Cup in Camrose Feb. 8-12 will have local flavour By Murray Green

Camrose curling fans will have a few options for which team to cheer at the Boston Pizza Cup. Kevin Martin, Jamie King and Tom Appelman all have ties to Camrose. The cup is presented to the winning foursome at the men's curling provincials held at the Edgeworth Centre from Feb. 8 to 12. Tom Appelman rink will be one of the local favourites because Adam Enright of the Camrose area is throwing third rocks for his foursome. "I'm really excited to play in that facility (EnCana Arena)," said Adam, who grew up in the Rose City Curling Club. "It's nice and close, which makes it easy for family and friends to come and watch. I'm looking forward to that." The favourites at the provincials will be Martin's rink and Kevin Koe's team. "I don't think there will be any extra pressure on us. Martin and Koe are the teams to beat and the rest of the teams have nothing to lose," explained Adam. "In that sense, we don't have any added pressure. We think that we can beat them, that's why we play the games. We will have to, definitely, be sharp because they don't make very many mistakes. They never have bad games, so we have to limit our mistakes to have a chance to beat them." The Appelman rink hasn't faced either of the favourites this season. "It seems odd, but we haven't played them because of the way things worked out," said Adam. "We have played a lot of good teams to prepare for provincials and we have played both of the teams in the past. I don't think it is an advantage or a disadvantage. Both teams are so sharp and they play their game and that doesn't change a lot. They want to force you to play along with them. They put rocks in play and force you to make your shots." Both of the top teams like to crowd the house. "They are going to be throwing the guards, playing the come-arounds and they are not going to keep it wide open," said Adam. "They definitely can play that big weight shot, but they are going to be junking it up and you better be putting

Adam Enright is one of the members of the Appelman rink that will be competing this week for a spot in the Brier.

your rocks into position. Otherwise, it could be a short game." The Edmonton and surrounding region has some of the best curlers in the world. "Alberta is such a tough province and it really forces you to improve your game. You are playing the top teams on a consistent basis and it forces you to improve, but at the same time it is so difficult to make it to the Brier (nationals). In that respect, it can be frustrating, but it is always an advantage to play the best teams in order for you to improve." The Appelman team had Tom's brother Ted substitute for the playdowns because the regular second, Brandon Klassne suffered a knee injury and is out for the rest of the season. The lead is Nathan Connolly. Adam explained his team's situation in more detail. "Last year I curled with the two brothers. This year, Ted received an offer to play with (Randy) Ferbey, so he did that. I played with Tom, Brandon and Nathan. Between our city playdowns and northerns, Brandon tore some ligaments in his knee. He was on crutches for northerns, so we talked with NACA (Northern Alberta Curling Association) about our options for subs. Ted was available after the Ferbey rink lost in the city playdowns. It is always tough to have a new player going into the most important games of the year, But, we were fortunate because we have all played with Ted in the past. It is unfortunate we lost Brandon, but Ted fits right in with us." The Appelman rink is

expected to be ranked in the middle of the pack. "That doesn't matter to us at all. We just don't want to play one of the top two teams right away. We want to get our rhythm before meeting them," said Adam. " The ice at the Boston Pizza Cup will be second to none in Alberta. "As long as we are positive to the broom, there will be a lot of shots made. We will be focusing on that in practices, because you don't want soft shots that can sail away on you. We want positive releases and normally we are pretty quick to pick up on little changes. When the ice is so good, like it has been for the past three or four years, you are never out of a game. Good shots will be made and that is great for the fans." Adam has been in three junior provincials and this will be his fifth men's provincials. "I've had some good luck in northerns and I have been on some good teams." The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win and he thinks a team to watch for will be Jamie King's rink. "They have had a really good year and have clicked right from the start. The Brock Virtue team is young and makes a lot of shots as well." All of the teams are excited to play in Camrose. "I think the crowds will be big and the building will be good to play in. I know it is a lot of work for the committee, but I hope we (Camrose) will be able to host the provincials more often." Martin's team was the first to qualify because they are the defending champions. He is from Lougheed, but has a lot of family in Camrose. Kevin Koe, Brock Virtue and King also prequalified. King lived in Camrose when he was learning to curl. Kurt Balderston and Greg Hill will represent the Peace District. Rob Schlender, Appelman and Kevin Park represent the northern part of the province. Dean Ross, Matt Blandford and Lloyd Hill qualified from the south. Tickets for daily and per draw events are on sale online at www.2012bostonpizzacup.com or they may be purchased at the Camrose Kodiaks' office from noon to 4 p.m. They do accept messages.

Strilchuk meets a Hero Camrose Primary Care Network executive director Stacey Strilchuk (right) met with Hero of the Year Robin Lim. Submitted by Colleen Lindholm, Camrose Primary Care Network

Sometimes timing is everything! Prior to Stacey Strilchuk, executive director, Camrose Primary Care Network (PCN) leaving for Indonesia with her husband for the holiday season, it was announced that Robin Lim had been awarded the 2011 CNN Hero of the Year Award. Robin Lim, affectionately known as Ibu Robin (Mother Robin), is an American woman who has helped thousands of poor Indonesian women have a healthy pregnancy and birth. Through her Bumi Sehat health clinics, Ibu Robin offers free prenatal care, birthing services and medical aid in Indonesia, where many families cannot afford care. Founded in 1995, Bumi Sehat is a non-profit, village-based organization that runs two by-donation community health centres in Bali and Aceh, Indonesia. While on vacation, Strilchuk had the opportunity to visit the original Bumi Sehat clinic located in the village of Nyuh Kuning, outside of Ubud, Bali. Through a variety of weekly clinics, ongoing birth services and 24-hour a day emergency health services, the Bali clinic provides approximately 9,000 consultations and more than 550 births per year. Strilchuk was given a tour of the community health centre that has two birthing rooms, a postpartum recovery area, and three general health treatment areas. She also had the opportunity to meet with a number of health care providers practicing in the clinic as well as Ibu Robin herself. “I was aware Ibu Robin had been nominated for the prestigious award and was so excited to hear she had won,” said Strilchuk. “Obviously her passion for prenatal care and focus on healthy births had a major impact on me, especially in the context of the work we do in the Camrose PCN Maternal Newborn Clinic.” Bumi Sehat is currently raising funds to build a larger facility to allow for more patients to be seen. The Strilchuks were able to bring a few items from Canada in support of the clinic’s wish list and were also in attendance at a benefit concert held on New Year’s Eve in the village of Nyuh Kuning, headlined by Michael Franti with all proceeds going toward the new clinic. “It was very special for me to spend time with Robin and have her share her thoughts on safe and gentle birthing practices. She truly cares for each and every Balinese family. I am very appreciative and grateful for the opportunity I was given,” said Strilchuk. For more information you can visit the Bumi Sehat web site at www.bumisehatbali.org.

Letters to the Editor YOUNG MEMBER A ceremony held at Heisler Nov. 12 saw a degree team initiate twelve members into the Elks Lodge, District 8. One of the youngest to be initiated was 16-year-old Matthew Caskey, of Camrose, who joined Camrose Elks Lodge 70 along with Brad Desaulners. PEN POINTS by Berdie Fowler

Inspired by VIPs This week, February 5-11, is White Cane Week in Canada. The first week in February has been observed as such since 1946 and the practice has a number of positive outcomes. It causes us to pause and try to imagine what it is like to live with little or no vision. Doing this gives us at least a glimpse of the restrictive reality of visual impairment and motivates us to do whatever is possible to make life better for persons who cannot see. When I do this, I always am inspired by the seemingly impossible achievements of blind persons and their unfailing effort and determination to succeed and be of service. Today, as I again tried to imagine life without sight, I noticed on my book shelf The Story of My Life by Helen Keller. I had read it and been enthralled by the extremely high aspirations of this blind and deaf girl and her courage, tenacity and determination to graduate from college in spite of the immeasurable difficulties, frustrations and sometimes even rage, that were hazards and barriers to reaching her goal. That she overcame seemed like a miracle; it therefore was appropriate that the movie depicting Miss Keller’s captivating story was called The Miracle Worker. Helen Keller was born in 1880 and died in 1968. At the age of 19 months she was stricken with an illness that left her both deaf and blind. We, who are blessed with the senses of sight and hearing, cannot possibly imagine the dark and silent world in which she might have lived had it not been for her own aspirations, ambition and effort, plus a devoted and exceptionally talented teacher, and funding for inquisitive minds to do innovative research and develop new technology. Technology critical to Miss Keller’s education was Alexander Graham Bell’s invention that enabled deaf persons to hear and to speak, and also the invention of braille typewriters in several languages. Essential as they were, they were just inert products of ideas, experiment and pieces of metal and other stuff that became useful only when combined with the faith, dedication and unbelievable patience of a miraculous teacher named Anne Sullivan. In the end, Miss Keller exceeded her wildest dreams; her once prison-like life, devoid of sight and hearing, was transformed into a mind full of wondrous knowledge which she used for the benefit of others. Her greatest giving-back contribution may have been to provide hope for all who have disabilities. With gratitude, she once wrote that her deafness and blindness had actually opened doors of privilege for her. In addition, her success helps the rest of us realize the tremendous value of funding research, developing assistive technology, and giving to organizations such as the reputable Canadian Institute for the Blind (CNIB) which increases public awareness of all aspects of blindness and assists blind persons to access the ever-increasing number of aids to their daily living. In conclusion, I remind readers that our local VIP (Visually Impaired Persons) Club will be hosting the Ron McVee Memorial Walk on Sunday, June 3, 2012. Those who cannot walk may listen to music, socialize and attend the free barbecue. All monies raised will stay in Alberta to support CNIB programs, and supply pamphlets, white canes and more. Local VIP contacts are president Randy Simmet, 780.672.1408, and secretary Joyce McVee, 780.672.7420. It is my hope that these few words will make each of us more aware and appreciative of the valuable contributions VIPs make in their homes and through involvement in community affairs – in spite of barriers that only they experience and which sighted persons can only imagine. Kudos to VIPs!

Letters are welcomed but please limit them to 500 words or less and sign with first name, initial, surname, address and phone number; only name of writer and city or town will be printed. Letters to third parties are not accepted. The Camrose Booster may edit for length, clarity, legality, personal abuse, good taste, public interest and availability of space. The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. EMS heroes

We would like to let everyone know what real heroes we have in our EMS personnel. They are absolutely wonderful, caring people with great expertise. If it were not for their quick meticulous actions, our outcome for Frank may have been quite different. Thank you so much to Pete and Saryn for your care and professionalism. You are very special people indeed. Also, thank you so much to the staff at the Fowler Centre for your quick actions and picking me up as well. You were so very kind. Thanks to all again.' Trudy and Frank Laverty, Camrose Shaping values

Camrose is an excellent example of a good community. This city seems to work in unity to provide opportunity for everyone. In my opinion, to grow a community, we must grow everyone's dreams and provide opportunities for each other. To ensure a bright future for Camrose, I believe our community needs to invest in its kids. Companies, like About Time Productions, offer life skills that everyone needs, especially kids. About Time Productions offers welcoming acting and dancing classes to a variety of ages. The experiences I, Sarah Haugen, have been offered within this not for profit theatre company have instilled a love for performing, gained friends, developed skills and enhanced my personality. In my opinion these are experiences every child should have the right to take part in, to become a performer or simply to gain the confidence it takes to present to their class. Opportunities are essential for growth. I began as a 'munchkin' performing in The Wizard of Oz, put on by About Time. Three more of About Time's main productions: How to Eat Like a Child, Annie Jr., and 30 Reasons Not to Be in a Play, as well as several workshops, have provided the opportunities I need. Before I turn fifteen I will have gotten to: be part of a large production, tap dance, perform as part of an improv troupe, direct a oneact play, and a whole lot more, thanks to About Time. About Time's courses are vast and provide unique opportunities that every child would enjoy and benefit from. The workshop teachers,

volunteers, technicians, artistic director (Cathie Johnson) and others too numerous to name make About Time Productions fun, affordable and a place to learn. I feel privileged as a Camrose resident to have been blessed with a company that values what they do and cares about the kids they share their gifts and talents with. Respect, equality and teamwork, a few of About Time Productions' values, are the same ones our community needs to hold. Camrosians, let's continue to shape a community full of values and a place where dreams can be fulfilled. Sarah Haugen, Camrose Cat traps

Located west of Ferintosh, permanent residents Irene Froese, with little dog Brandon by her side, and the assistance of neighbor Matt Picco, have now trapped 10 feral (wild and roaming) cats in their neighborhood. We haven't given up yet! We had become very concerned as cats had multiplied over the years and contaminating our property. Something had to be done! Irene did some research in Camrose and has been working with Monica Rusnak, of (BRAPS) Battle River Animal Protection Society. They are a non-profit organization operated by volunteers and funded by public donations. Monica provided us with the traps and relocated and found homes for some of the cats. Thank you to BRAPS for your support and time. Unfortunately, there is no cat bylaw within the County of Camrose as we had contacted them for help and were told they could not help us. Irene has owned her property since 1982 (30 years) followed her dream, left Calgary, had a home built and moved to Little Beaver Lake in 2007. Someone had left cats behind in the area and over the past five years they have become a major issue. We watched our neighborhood grow, but got bombarded with all these cats. Some part-time owners that do not live here have complained as the cats keep the mice down, but we do not need 50 cats running loose. Monica explained the trap and release program where they offer the cats once neutered can be returned to the property owner for a small fee. If there are any concerns about this issue contract BRAPS. Monica stressed "We have to get these cats off the street." Matt and neighbor Jerome talked about how the cats have contaminated their yards, ruined trees and bushes, and invaded bird nests killing their young. They contaminated Jerome's pet neutered cat's house in his yard forcing his pet cat out in the cold. Irene had cats digging underneath her home to seek shelter and prepare for another litter of kittens. She lost sleep constantly with Brandon barking at 2 a.m. with cats in her yard. He is quite a watch dog. This had gotten totally out of control.

Matt is backing Irene all the way with the progress and (quote) "his prayers were answered" when she showed up at his door with the traps in early January. We have young families living out here and these cats caused us all a lot of grief. Neighbors Matt and Jerome are very grateful that we have gotten this matter under control. Irene has thoughts of adopting one of cats, once neutered. It could be a good companion for their dog Brandon. Irene struggled over the years, is a cancer survivor, artist and employee with the City of Camrose. You can call her "Trapper Lady" as she is pleased to assist her neighbors in time of need. It's been exciting, a real challenge and a learning experience. We are not cat free yet, but still working on it. At least we can now enjoy the clean environment once again at our beautiful location, called home, at Little Beaver Lake. Irene Froese, Ferintosh Will Alberta election end PC rule?

I do realize that in 1971, I was only three years old. I do understand that I was in no position to vote and I had no understanding of politics. I do believe in the saying that "History does repeat itself." I do realize that according to the latest polls, the PC government is at a comfortable 53%. They are according to the latest polls heading to another majority. It does not matter to most Albertans that this government is breaking rules left and right. They are accepting illegal donations from places who are not allowed to give to any political party. I am sure most Albertans think all politicians are corrupt and that whatever they do would not shock them. I know that this seems to be another election that should not be surprising to anyone. However, I still cannot help myself by asking, "Is it possible for this election to be a repeat of the Alberta election of 1971?" For those who do not know anything about this election, this was the start of the PC rule which has lasted for 40 years. The PC party was lead by Peter Lougheed who in that election broke the 36 years that the Social Credit had ruled. The PC party won 49 out of 75 seats. The Social Credit really did not lose too much support over all. They lost every seat in Edmonton and only kept five seats in Calgary. The PCs received 46% of the popular vote. The Social Credit had just lost their very popular leader Mr. Manning. Mr. Manning, the election before received another majority government. They now had a new leader. The Social Credit had a large number of MLAs retiring and they did not seek re election. They had some members cross the floor. Continued on page 11

Heart and Stroke campaign begins By Dan Jensen

Camrosians are being asked to be generous this month when Heart and Stroke campaign canvassers shows up on their doorsteps. "We have over 1,300 canvassers who will be knocking on doors throughout central Alberta hoping to raise approximately $113,000 said Heart and Stoke Foundation fund development coordinator Karen Jackman. The total amount raised in central Alberta in 2011 was just over $100,000. "The amount we raise every year varies according to the economy but generally, it has been going up," said Jackman. Money donated in the campaign will be used to support the Heart and Stroke Foundation's life-giving research, as well as health promotion and education programs. "We feel that we can help more Canadians by investing in research and education that leads towards the prevention of heart disease and stroke, as well as better treatments for the disease," said Jackman. Those who are not home when a canvasser shows up may make a donation by calling 1-888-HSF-INFO, or by printing and mailing a donation form that can be found on-line at http://www.heartandstroke. ab.ca One of the campaign's corporate supporters is TD Canada Trust, which will be selling $2

paper hearts on which customers can write a message. "The hearts will be placed on the walls of the branch for everyone to see," said Jackman. The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada is a volunteerdriven organization "Volunteers guide the longterm planning and direction of the Foundation through their membership on our board of directors," states the Heart and Stroke Foundation website. "They help raise funds by participating in the door to door campaign during Heart Month and other events. They deliver our health promotion programs, including CPR courses and others. They are our most valued resource." Statistics show that heart disease and stroke are two of Canada's leading causes of death, claiming more than 75,000 lives each year. Heart disease is a group of conditions affecting the structure and functions of the heart and has many root causes. Coronary artery disease, for example, develops when a combination of fatty materials, calcium and scar tissue (called plaque) builds up in the arteries that supply blood to your heart (coronary arteries). The plaque buildup narrows the arteries and prevents the heart from getting enough blood. A stroke is a sudden loss of brain function. It is caused by the interruption of flow of blood to the brain (ischemic stroke) or the rupture of blood vessels in the

brain (hemorrhagic stroke). The interruption of blood flow or the rupture of blood vessels causes brain cells (neurons) in the affected area to die. The effects of a stroke depend on where the brain was injured, as well as how much damage occurred. A stroke can impact any number of areas including your ability to move, see, remember, speak, reason and read and write. Heart disease and stroke will take one in three Canadians before their time. Heart-shaped pizzas

Boston Pizza will once again be donating one dollar from the sale of each heart-shaped pizza on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, to the Boston Pizza Foundation in support of its many charities, including the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, Kids Help Phone, and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. "Boston Pizza's annual Valentine's Day fundraiser is a huge success," said Mark Pacinda, president of Boston Pizza International Inc. "In fact, we sell more pizzas on Valentine's Day than any other day of the year. We'd like to thank our guests for the incredible outpour of support they provide each year and for their generous donations to the Boston Pizza Foundation. We couldn't do it without them." Boston Pizza guests can also purchase red paper hearts for a $1 donation and write a Valentine's message to someone special.

Letters to the Editor Continued from page 8

To me personally, this seems to be a similar situation as what happened in 1971. I only would like to ask if the 2012 Alberta election could possibly be another repeat of the 1971 election? Could it be possible that the 40-year reign of the PC party come to an end? I do realize that I was only three years old when this election happened, but I cannot help myself by asking if this election could be a huge surprise for everybody! This could be a year of change if the people of Alberta desire it to be. I sure do hope that the voters of this province will vote in the right government. If they do, 2012 can be the best year ever. If not, then this year will only be just another election under their belt. If this happens, the voter will be telling them that they could do whatever they want, legal or illegally and they will always get in. I sure hope that the voters will send the right message. Time will tell what the answer to my question will be. History does repeat itself. Will this year be the one that will be a repeat of 1971? Who knows? We will all have to wait and see. Augustana professor researching gestures By Dan Jensen

That toddler of yours may not be able to speak but that doesn't mean he or she isn't trying to communicate. Research being done by Augustana psychology professor Paula Marentette is showing that pre-linguistic children (those between six and 12 months of age) are more proficient than many think when it comes to using gestures and signs to express to their parents what they feel or want. "I have found that babies are very good at picking up the signs that their parents teach them for certain things," said Marentette, who spoke on the topic at Augustana's Rocky

Road Ice Cream Fantasy this past Sunday. She's also found that babies who are not taught gestures or hand signals will by nine months of age start to point. "They will look at their mom or look at their dad and point, and be very insistent until they get what they want. That in turn helps them set up a situation where the child can make a connection with the words the adults use." In trying to determine how children learn gestures, Marentette and her coresearcher, Dr. Elena Nicolados, associate professor at the University of Alberta, turned

to a theory called ontogenetic ritualization, which suggests that chimpanzees develop with their mother a ritual and eventually, over time, learn what that ritual means. "We wondered if the theory describes children who aren't talking yet and found there were some big differences," said Marentette. "With humans the parents treat their children as if they are communicating, something that is not the case with chimpanzee mothers. And because the parents assume their children are communicating it looks like human children move into communication and use

their gestures to request something or just be social." Referring to unrecognized objects with either iconic gestures – those that are related to the actions the objects do – or arbitrary gestures, Marentette found that preschoolers learned the iconic gestures as labels for the unfamiliar objects much more quickly. She wants to know more about how children might expect gestures to describe the actions of objects rather than be used in a symbolic way. Marentette findings on the way children use gestures to pick out objects and count have been published in jour-

nals, while her comparisons between chimpanzee and human babies will be coming out in a book this spring. The information she has collected, is vital, she feels in coming to a greater understanding of how children develop. "If we have a child who isn't pointing at nine, 12 or 15 months, isn't ever looking at mom and demanding something, that could be a sign that we should start to be paying a little closer attention. I think really understanding how typical children develop can be used to understand children whose development is not going as smoothly as we would like."

Felines are up for adoption through BRAPS By Murray Green

The Battle River Animal Protection Society (BRAPS) has 33 cats waiting find a new home. Some of the animals can be seen at Global Pet Foods on Saturday, February 11. "We have two pet adoption days at Global Pet Foods, last Saturday and again this Saturday, Feb. 11, from 1 to 4 p.m. We will have both cats and kittens, as well as males and females available to be adopted. Right now, we don't have any dogs available," said Laura Houseman, BRAPS president. "We will also have information on the other cats we have in our system." BRAPS attempts to find the right match for every cat and potential owner. "We plan on bringing six or seven to the store, but we will have information on all of the other cats, so we can find the right fit for adoption. We arrange visits to our foster homes, so the family can meet the cat and we can determine if it fits into their family." With no animal shelter in the city, BRAPS has set up a system of foster parents to take care of the animals until a new home can be found. "Cats can be in foster homes from two weeks to eight months, depending on what kind of a cat people are looking for," explained Laura. "There is no cost to the foster home. We provide the food and the litter. The volunteer foster homes provide patience and the

loving care some of the animals need. Patience is required because some of the cats come from abused or neglected situations. They need a lot of love and care to learn to trust people again."

While the felines are in a foster home, BRAPS evaluates the cats to determine what social situation would be the best for them. "We decide whether they need a quiet home, or if they are good

with children and if they are able to be in a home with dogs," said Laura. "That evaluation helps us find the best permanent home for the pet and the family." She said that unfortunately,

Credit Union has another year of solid growth By Dan Jensen

Battle River Credit Union had another year of solid growth in 2011. "Income before ProfitShare allocation and income taxes exceeded $11 million, the second highest in our history," explained president Alan Fielding in Growing Forward, BRCU's annual report to members. The amount allocated directly to BRCU common share accounts on Dec. 1, 2011, was $6,936,000. "Over 25 per cent of interest paid by our members and interest earned by members on their deposits was either rebated to or paid to our members as bonus interest by way of ProfitShare," said Fielding. BRCU's consistent plan has been to be prudent and efficient, while at the same time providing a high level of service and financial products. All deposits are 100 per cent guaranteed by the province of Alberta, regardless of the amount. "You can rest assured that

BRCU CEO Steve Friend and president Alan Fielding.

your money is safe with us," said Fielding. BRCU's assets at the end of October, 2011, totalled $533,763,000, up from $501,670,000 at the end of October, 2010. The total amount of member deposits at the end of October, 2011, was $458,754,000. Member loans at the end of October, 2011 totalled $414,483,000, up from $399,340,000 at the end of Octo-

ber, 2010, and $380,994,000 at the end of October, 2009. During the 2011 fiscal year the Battle River Credit Union approved 2,326 loan applications totalling $197,790,248.58. By comparison, BRCU approved 2,408 applications totalling $198,183,594.07 in the 2009 fiscal year. The fact it is owned locally by membership allows BRCU to be flexible and responsive to the needs of a sophisticated, demanding and ever-changing market-

place. A new website offers members complete online banking functionality, including transaction history, bill payments and transfers, while MemberDirect Mobile Services for Smart Phones technology allows members to perform all banking functions on their smart phones. "It's an exciting time to be a member of the Battle River Credit Union," said CEO Steve Friend. Battle River Credit Union has evolved over the last 61 years from one branch in Camrose with assets of $178 million, serving 21 members, to 11 branches serving the Battle River region with almost 17,000 members. "Sixty-one years of continued growth and success is a tremendous accomplishment," said Friend. "It is a testament to the continued support and loyalty of our members. It is also a testament to the leadership of our board of directors and management team, and to the abilities of our committed staff members."

Camrose Regional Exhibition receives more funding By Dan Jensen

The Camrose Regional Exhibition will receive an additional $142,850 in base funding in 2012 from Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. "We've been working with the government to have our funding needs addressed and we are very pleased with the response we have received," said Camrose Regional Exhibition general manager Wynn McLean last week. The funding comes with the stipulation that 10 per cent be used for agricultural youth leadership development or initiatives

such as scholarships, training or youth development. The funding will also enhance farm safety programming. "Currently, the average age of Alberta's producers is 51, something that needs to be changed," said Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Evan Berger. "This additional funding will help support local programs that encourage our youth to become involved in our agriculture industry." Camrose Regional Exhibition is the only one of the seven regional agricultural societies (Grande Prai-

rie, Lloydminster, Red Deer, Olds, Medicine Hat and Lethbridge are the others) in the province that offers training and development. "This additional funding for youth programs fits nicely with our mandate and will allow us to do even more than what we are able to do at this time," explained McLean. "Jennifer Filip, our training and special projects manager, is looking forward to working on developing quality training opportunities for farm youth. "It's an opportunity to do a lot of good things."

Alberta's 284 local agricultural societies who are in good standing will receive $2,500 each to be used for activity-based agricultural youth leadership development activities or farm safety programming. In 2010 each primary ag society received a one-time grant of $2,500 from the Alberta government to use for farm safety events and activities in their community. Projects ranged from ad campaigns to safety plans/initiatives incorporating farm safety and 4-H programs and trade show booths.

each feline comes with a sad story. "We rescue a lot of cats. Sometimes we receive a call saying there is a stray cat under our porch. Other times people leave town, but cats are left behind. When it is cold out, we receive calls that the animals are cold and it looks like they are starving. In the summer people don't think about a stray cat but, in the winter, we receive a lot of calls because they don't have food," said Laura. "Some are in dire straits. We are currently going through some feral (born in the wild) cats from Little Beaver Lake and determining which ones can be rehabilitated for adoption." BRAPS will be offering a pet first aid course on Feb. 28, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Camrose Composite High School commons area. "The course will be put on by one of the local veterinarians. People will receive a first aid kit, a manual and the presentation on what to do in case of an emergency," said Laura. "The course teaches people to determine if it is an emergency. Do they call the vet right away or wait until office hours? This course helps people make that call. The course also has good information on preventive care." To register for the course, contact BRAPS at 780-678-5713 or after Feb. 14 call Global Pet Foods at 780-608-2024.

Kid Fit aims for active children By Murray Green

The Camrose Healthy Lifestyle Coalition and the School CHAMP (Children’s Health and Mentorship Program) are partnering to collect clothing for needy children so they can have an active lifestyle. "We will be holding an athletic clothing drive called Kid Fit to gather items," said Jane Cherry-Lemire, chair of the Camrose Healthy Lifestyle Coalition. "The collection of clothes will take place from Feb. 13 to 27." People are asked to drop off athletic clothing and shoes so children can participate in active programs. "All children have the right to get fit, but some don’t have the right clothing to participate properly," added Jane. "We are collecting new or gently used items to distribute so that they can join in. We need running shoes (sizes 3 - 8), clothing (ages 8 - 12), T-shirts, shorts, socks and sweatpants. Cash, gift cards and donations will also be gratefully accepted." Drop-off sites are Chester Ronning School, Sparling School, Jack Stuart School, Sifton School, the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre, the Fitness Centre (Edgeworth), Primary Care Network, Sears or at the Public Health office. For more information phone Christie at 780-6726808 or Jane at 780-6729949.

Camrose Regional Trade Show at CRE nearing another sell-out By Dan Jensen

Businesses and organizations need to move fast if they wish to have a presence at the Camrose Regional Trade Show at the CRE Feb. 17, 18 and 19. "The number of booth spaces we have left are very limited," said CRE trade show committee chair Dwayne Roth last week. "I don't think we will have any trouble reaching a sell-out for the third straight year." The Camrose Regional Trade Show attracts exhibitors from all over the province, as well as some parts of Saskatchewan.

"It has been building in popularity, not only with the exhibitors but with the general public," said Roth. A lot of the trade show's most effective advertising comes from exhibitors who have participated in years before. "If they have an enjoyable experience they will tell others," said Roth. Of the 63 exhibitors that had booked spaces for the trade show as of Jan. 29, several are new. "It is always good to have new ones to keep things interesting," said Roth.

The trade show has always been a good way for businesses to tell the public what they are all about. "With several thousand people passing through the doors they get great exposure and are able to showcase their products to new customers," said Roth. A trade show attraction that will be back by popular demand will be the popular Thistle Hill Petting Zoo, which this year will be sponsored by Pro Concept Coatings. "The trade show has lots of stuff for moms and dads, but it is always good to have

something like the petting zoo to keep the younger ones entertained," said Roth. A part of the show that will be noticeably absent is the entertainment stage. "We've done the stage the last couple of years but were unable to get it set up the way we wanted it this time around," said Roth. The trade show will be open from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children 12 and under who are accompanied by an adult. A draw for a door prize

will be conducted at the end of the day for everyone who pays the admission fees. "Members of the trade show committee go around to the different exhibitors to collect items for a basket of items that is valued somewhere between $400 and $500," said Roth. "It is a way of saying thank you to those who attend and the exhibitors for putting out everything they have to offer." Proceeds from admission will be used by the Camrose Regional Exhibition for normal site maintenance and improvement.

Sahakarini, Augustana to show Blue Gold February 14 Do you think that access to water is an essential human right across the world? Do you have the impression that we have abundant water and will never run out? If that is what you think, you must see Blue Gold. Based on the groundbreaking book by former UN advisor on water, Maude Barlow and Tony Clarke, Blue Gold sheds light on the world’s rapidly approaching water crisis and suggests that future wars will be fought, not over oil, but over water. It also shows how aggressively corporations are turning water into a commodity that they control and sell. In some areas in the US even catching your own rain water has already become illegal. But not all is doom and gloom. This international award-winning film follows various examples of people fighting back: from grade school protests to large-scale uprisings for the right to water, for their right to survive. The film will be shown on the Augustana Campus in the Classroom Building on the main floor in C101 at 7 p.m. on February 14th. It is free for all! Augustana’s Earthwise club will be co-hosting with delicious home-made cookies, and the Battle River Watershed Alliance will offer information on our local water reality.

2012 Ford Focus Great fuel economy combines with class-leading technology By Dan Jensen

You'll be making fewer trips to the gas station with the 2012 Ford Focus from Lamb Ford Sales Camrose. The new Ford Focus uses just 5.88 litres of fuel per 100 km on the highway and just 8.4 litres of fuel while getting around in the city. "Our customers tell us that fuel economy is one of the top reason for purchasing a Focus," said Lamb Ford Sales sales manager Brett Read. "The all-new Focus meets that demand with great fuel economy, class-leading technologies and features, exceptional standards of craftsmanship and driving dynamics typically reserved for larger, more expensive vehicles." Advanced powertrain The 2.0 litre gasoline direct-injection DOHC fourcylinder engine with high-pressure direct injection and twin independent variable camshaft timing, works with the latest dry-clutch six-speed Ford PowerShift automatic transmission, which by itself can help to reduce fuel consumption by up to nine per cent compared to a traditional four-speed automatic. Direct injection delivers the precise amount of gasoline right into the combustion chamber. "The engine is one of the most powerful, fuel efficient and refined engines in its class, and one of the most advanced non-turbocharged fourcylinder powerplants Ford has ever produced," said Read. Horsepower is rated at 160 and torque at 146 lb.-ft., up from 140 and 136 respectively in the 2011 Focus. Attention to detail Focus engineers used computer modeling to reduce friction and reduce overall weight. The valvetrain received a fine surface treatment to present the smoothest surface possible, piston skirts were treated with a special low-friction coating, and the oil pump and its drive ratio were sixed for the engine's exact capacity requirements. Accessory drive fiction was also reduced through a series of actions. Electric power-assisted steering eliminates the drag of an engine-driven power steering pump, while the use of so-called stretchy belt technology removes friction in the form of a belt tensioner on the air-conditioning compressor drive system. Additionally, an overriding alternator decoupler – essentially a special pulley that reduces certain types of vibrations – allows the alternator and water pump drive belt to operate at a much lower tension than is typically used, further reducing frictional losses. To keep overall powertrain weight as low as possible, the block cylinder head and oil pan – traditionally the heaviest engine components – are aluminum castings. To increase rigidity, these elements are ribbed for additional strength and durability.

Great looks With its striking front end sleek profile, dramatic rising beltline and athletic stance, the new Focus clearly telegraphs the rewarding experience that awaits customers when they take to the road. This dynamic quality is reinforced by the distinctive design of the interior. The new Focus has an extremely modern cockpitstyle interior, with the stylish centre console wrapped around the driver and providing oustanding access to the vehicle's major controls and display panels. A key element of the interior is the quality of craftsmanship. The cabin's bold and contemporary graphics, the sculpted shape of the soft-touch instrument panel and the choice of superior trim materials all help to give occupants the feeling that they are travelling in a premium-class car. "Each component in the vehicle that the customer will touch, see, hear or even smell has been subjected to rigorous analysis to ensure it will exceed an owner's expectations," explained Read. "Particular attention has been given to the quality of the interior trim materials and the colour matching, gaps, flushness and tolerances where one part meets another." Ford has developed a global DNA standard that

defines the exact attributes a part should have to meet the quality requirements of the brand. Examples include the sound the door makes Jan Nowakowski when it is closing, requiring special attention to the door structure and latch mechanism, and the design of a steering wheel, right down to the thickness of padding and side of stitching on the rim. The most significant interior innovation is the available SYNC with MyFord, which includes a sophisticated voice control system for vehicle functions, connected Bluetooth devices, MP3 players and a wide variety of external media. Focus interior space rivals much larger vehicles. Strength and safety The Focus platform provides an incredibly strong and stiff structure which not only benefits vehicle dynamics but also provides the basis for enhanced crash performance. High strength steels are used extensively in the next-generation Focus body shell. These advanced materials help the structure meet the most stringent crash legislation across world markets, while minimizing the vehicle's weight.

Planning is the key to your financial security throughout your retirement RBC Royal Bank The events of the past year or so have left many Canadians feeling vulnerable — especially those who are close to retiring or are newly retired. Uncertainty over your investments may be raising worries about whether you’ll have enough money for the lifestyle you’ve envisioned. And looking for advice in the financial media can be confusing. In times of uncertainty, it’s important not to let your emotions influence your financial decisions. If you’re concerned about how your savings will support the retirement you desire, the best strategy is to take a close look at the fundamental elements that make up a successful retirement plan. Essentially, there are three key steps: estimating your expenses; estimating your income; and finding a way to bridge any gap between the two. How much money will you need? The starting point for determining how much income you’ll need in retirement is knowing how much you spend now — something few people know with any accuracy. To find out, it’s necessary to track your monthly spending. This doesn’t require a complicated, time-consuming budget exercise, however. It’s possible to get an accurate estimate by monitoring your expenditure over a relatively short period, using a simple strategy. These steps will make it easier to collect all your spending records in one place. They work best if you track your spending as a household:

Use one bank account for all your transactions and bill payments, including automatic bill payments. Make sure all your debit transactions come from the same bank account. Use only one credit card. Not all of your expenses will carry through to your retirement. For example, if you know you will have paid off your mortgage, you can remove it from your list of retirement expenses. Of those expenses that will continue, total your expenditures at the end of each month for three months. Then, divide your spending into three categories: Needs: These include essential items such as food, housing expenses, utilities and taxes. Wants: These are extras such as restaurant meals or golf memberships. Dreams: These are luxury items such as a vacation property. Calculating what you spend now will help you estimate what you’ll be spending in retirement. By dividing the expenses into categories, you’ll also know which items are priorities and which are less important. The amount you spend on each category will help you assess whether your retirement income will support a basic lifestyle — the must-haves — or a more comfortable one. You may already know how much retirement income you can expect. If not, the information below will help you to estimate the amount. Where will your money come from? Your sources of income will change when you retire. Instead

of employment earnings, you’ll be drawing income from a number of different sources, some of it guaranteed and some of it variable. Guaranteed income Company pensions and government benefits such as Canada Pension Plan (CPP) or Quebec Pension Plan (QPP) and Old Age Security (OAS) are secure sources of income, not affected by market movements or fluctuating interest rates. CPP/ QPP and OAS are also indexed to inflation. Income from these sources is taxed at your marginal rate, just like employment income and, in the case of OAS, is subject to a “clawback” when your income from other sources surpasses a certain level. Cash reserves Cash and cash-like investments, such as Treasury bills or money market funds, can provide steady income. These investments are not volatile, and can provide a “rainy day fund” you can draw on for unexpected expenses, or use when markets go down and you want to avoid selling your equity assets at lower values. Keeping a large enough cash reserve on hand to help weather a couple of years of market downturns can be a great retirement strategy. Investment assets Your investment income is likely to include a mix of interest, dividends and capital gains generated by the stocks, bonds and mutual funds you hold in your registered and non-registered portfolios. These can be significantly affected by market fluctuations, and may dwindle

as you draw down your capital during retirement. Alternative income Other possible sources of income include working after retirement or tapping into the equity in your home, either by downsizing or taking out a loan or line of credit secured on the value of your home. If you own rental or recreational real estate, any income generated by that property will fall into this category as well. The order in which you draw on this income is important, as it will be taxed differently depending on its source. You have little control over company pension and government benefits, but with the other categories you can choose what to take and when. In most cases, it’s advisable to draw on your non-registered assets before taking money from your registered Retirement Savings Plan (RSP) or registered Retirement Income Fund (RIF). The reason is that RSP and RIF withdrawals will be fully taxable, and if left within the plan, could qualify for rollover into a spousal plan after your death. On the other hand, withdrawals from your non-registered investments may trigger capital gains or reduce your capacity to earn tax-preferred dividends. You should also take into account new opportunities to split eligible pension income, such as RIF payments, with your spouse, and how the timing of RSP or RIF withdrawals may affect your OAS clawback, or your marginal tax rate in the year of death. Bridging the gap If you find that your expected income isn’t sufficient to

support the retirement lifestyle you’ve planned, you need an action plan to correct the shortfall. You might consider these strategies: Accelerate your savings The last few years before retirement provide a unique opportunity to maximize your savings, since you are more likely to have a high-paying job and fewer expenses than in earlier years. Now is the time to maximize your RSP contributions, including making up any carryforward room. Continue to work Many Canadians are choosing to move gradually into retirement by working part-time or on a consulting basis for a few years. Pay down debt Carrying a low debt load is especially important when you are entering retirement and may have less income to make monthly payments. Tackle the debt on which you are paying the highest interest rate first — for example, credit card balances. If you don’t have the money to pay a lump sum, increasing your monthly payments can make a significant difference. Alternatively, consider consolidating your debt into one lower-cost loan. This strategy can allow you to pay down more of the principal each month. Explore alternatives In many cases, going through this retirement incomeplanning process is a valuable reality check. If the retirement you envisioned is out of reach, you may want to adjust your plans to include more modest, yet equally rewarding, pursuits.

Locked-in retirement plans

LAST WEEK’S BOOSTER!

TD Canada Trust

All locked-in RSPs originate from Registered Pension Plans (RPP). RPPs are plans where funds are set aside by an employer, an employee, or both to provide a pension when the employee retires. Under pension laws, after a period of time (usually between two and five years after joining the plan), all money in the plan becomes fully vested in the employee. This means that the employee has an unconditional entitlement to the money as and when any age or service requirements are met. If you were a member of a Registered Pension Plan (RPP), your employment was terminated, and your plan was fully vested, the proceeds of that RPP would be considered 'locked-in'. These locked-in funds can only be transferred into certain 'Locked-in Plans' which include the following Locked-in RSPs and Locked-in Retirement Income Options: Retirement Savings Plans; Locked-in Retirement Account (LIRA); Locked-in Retirement Savings Plan (LRSP); Retirement Income Options; Life Income Fund (LIF); Locked-in Retirement Income Fund (LRIF); Prescribed Retirement Income Fund (PRIF).

Local curling fans will have a chance to visit with the team at the Western Financial Group, prior to the provincials. "We are excited to host the curlers in our office. They will be available for signing autographs, talking with curling fans and we have some great prizes available, such as jerseys," said branch manager Karen McFadyen. "We will be hosting a meet and greet and have some draws. It's a good

opportunity to meet the team that could be the new champions." The team was the winner of the Canadian Team Ranking System to pre-qualify for the men’s curling provincials held in the EnCana Arena on Feb. 8 to 12. The Koe foursome is expected to give Kevin Martin a run for the title. Kevin Koe's rink qualified based on Canadian points. It is based on points accumulated from September to December. The better the opposition, the more points you can acquire. Koe’s 2010 world championship team added

Pat Simmons, who skipped Saskatchewan in four consecutive briers (2005-08) to be a contender this season. Throwing second in Camrose will be Carter Rycroft and the lead will be Nolan Thiessen. Koe's team is the TSN Skins Game Champion this year. In 2010, it was the world men's champion, the Tim Hortons Brier champion and the Alberta men's winner. The curling team will be at the Western Financial Group on Feb. 8 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. The business is located at 5422-48 Avenue in Camrose. WFG is one of Team Koe's sponsors.

Kodiaks adapting to playoff-style hockey By Murray Green

The Camrose Kodiaks continue to play low scoring games as the playoffs approach. Camrose edged the Calgary Mustangs 2-1 in overtime in a fast-paced possible playoff preview on Saturday, January 28, at the Edgeworth Centre. Nelson Gadoury gave the Kodiaks the win with an overtime goal. The Kodiaks dominated the overtime frame with three scoring chances. Ty Clay garnered the other marker for Camrose. Goalie Matt Gibney made 24 of 25 saves for the win. Forward Adam deChamplain has missed some of the playoff atmosphere games with a wrist injury. "A couple of months ago I thought I just jammed my wrist. I had some x-rays and it didn't show that something was wrong, so I started playing again," explained Adam. "It seemed like it was never healing, so I went back to the doctor and he said I broke my wrist. Now I have to go back and see what time line I have to play again." He has sat out since the Jan. 15 game against Brooks. "I try and stay in shape with the exercises I can do. Hopefully, I can be back in a couple of weeks (for the playoffs)," said Adam. The time off has given him a better view of what is happening on the ice. "Right now we are tight and out-thinking the game. Everyone is trying to do too much out there. I think our leaders and veteran players will turn it around starting this week. The win against the Mustangs was huge for us, so I hope we can build off of that and finish in second place." The top two teams receive a first round bye and Camrose is currently tied for second with Okotoks. "We need to set the tone early and come out hard in

each game, with grit and determination. Everyone needs to be accountable and play like we did in the first couple of periods." The Camrose Kodiaks dropped a 4-2 decision to the Olds Grizzlys the day before. Craig Bokenfohr and Landon Kadatz replied for the Kodiaks. The game was even for the first two periods until Olds pulled away in the third with two unanswered tallies. Camrose outshot the Grizzlys 41-36. Goalie Brayden Hopfe made 32 of 35 saves and Olds scored an empty net goal when Camrose pressed late in the game. Adam is a crowd favourite for some local Kodiaks' fans. "My mom (Janet Galenza) grew up in Camrose and I have my grandpa and grandma to visit along with my uncle Barry and aunt Cheryl (Clarkson), so I have lots of family to visit, and support me. It feels like home and it's nice to have them at the games," said Adam. "It is nice to have parents who played in sports because they help me to focus and with workouts." After his season was finished last year, he watched and practiced with the Kodiaks to prepare himself for the step up to the junior ranks. Unfortunately, his stay may be for only one season. Adam, 17, has agreed to join the Portland Winterhawks next season. "We are excited for Adam as he has committed to Portland of the Western Hockey League. He is going to an organization with history and pride and a coaching staff that is second to none. The entire Kodiaks organization would like to wish Adam and his family the best," said coach and general manager Boris Rybalka. Former Augustana Vikings coach Mike Johnston is

the coach and general manager of the Winterhawks. Adam was the team’s 10th round pick in the 2009 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft. He has eight goals and six assists for 14 points in 38 games. Last season in 34 games with the Sherwood Park Kings of the Alberta Midget Hockey League, deChamplain had nine goals and 14 assists for 23 points. “Adam is a solid two-way forward who will add depth and experience to our group next year. Playing with Camrose, one of the elite teams in the AJHL, has really accelerated his devel-

opment," said coach Mike Johnston. The Kodiaks hit the road for five games because of the men's curling provincials, the Boston Pizza Cup, from Feb. 8 to 12. The Kodiaks finish the regular season with three straight home games. They face Lloydminster on Feb. 16, the Calgary Mustangs on Feb. 17 and the Olds Grizzlys on Feb. 19. Kodiaks help out with minor hockey teams

Pro Sports Photography Kodiaks forward Cody Pongracz helping the Atom 1 Dynamite Camrose Minor Hockey team.

Members of the Camrose Kodiaks have been involved in a special community initiative called Hockey Days In Camrose! A collection of Kodiaks players dedicated two Sundays in January to minor hockey in Camrose. Kodiaks players helped Novice and Atom hockey teams with their various practices and games throughout the day, on both Sunday, January 22, and Sunday, January 29. Whether it was tying skates, filling water bottles, opening the gate on the bench, coaching and changing the lines, or running practices, the Kodiaks players gave back to grassroots hockey in Camrose in a classy way. “Hockey Days In Camrose is a special way for the Kodiaks organization to really show our dedication to minor hockey players, coaches, and families,” stated Kodiaks marketing manager Ray McIsaac. “All of our Kodiaks players were once minor hockey players themselves, and all have fond memories of heading to the rink on weekends for games or practices. The Kodiaks organization is extremely proud to support minor hockey in Camrose and in the surrounding area.” The Camrose Kodiaks orga-

nization dedicated the month of January to minor hockey. To display this dedication, the Kodiaks had a special minor hockey weekend on January 14 and 15 where all minor hockey kids were allowed complimentary access to a pair of Kodiaks games on that weekend. Furthermore, Kodiaks players spent the past couple of Sundays executing the aforementioned Hockey Days In Camrose. The Kodiaks will continue to have involvement in minor hockey in the month of February as well. Most notably, the Kodiaks are proud to support the 11th Annual Fountain Tire Camrose Kodiaks Skills Clinic. The clinic takes place on Family Day, Monday, February 20, and it targets the Initiation, Novice, and Atom age groups. Registration for this clinic is available by going to either of the Fountain Tire locations in Camrose, at 4720-36 Street (east end location) or at 4901-48 Avenue (downtown location). For Want Ad service, please phone 780-672-3142 before six on Friday Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Second Thought By Shauna Wilton Professor, Political Studies Augustana Faculty, University of Alberta Moving forward ... with women

The annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) ended on January 29. The WEF is an independent international organization “committed to improving the state of the world by engaging business, political, academic and other leaders of society to shape global, regional and industry agendas” (weforum.org). The event – dominated by corporate leaders, researchers and politicians (mostly men) – is generally seen as supporting capitalism and looking to education, innovation and creativity to solve the current crises in the global economic system. Considering the focus and make-up of the organization, it might be a surprise to some to know that the WEF is an advocate for women’s equality and of a government-supported redesign of the workplace that will enable women to fulfill their potential in today’s economy. In fact, the 2011 Global Gender Gap Report states that the empowerment and education of girls and women is necessary for future economic and social health. They claim that “countries and companies will thrive if women are educated and engaged as fundamental pillars of the economy … Governments play an important role in creating the right policy framework for improving women’s education and economic participation.” In other words, society – including government – must create the infrastructure to enable women to fulfill their multiple roles as mothers, caregivers, employees, professionals, entrepreneurs and so forth and enable men to play a larger role within their families. This seems almost inconsistent for an economic organization that supports capitalism and the ‘free economy’ to be arguing for increased social programs and supports for women. What happened to individualism, self-reliance and hard work? Well, the truth is that investing in women and girls brings tremendous returns. Sheryl WuDunn, activist and author of Half the Sky, argues that ensuring that women and girls who are educated and are employable or employ

themselves, shifts them from a vicious cycle of poverty and subjugation into a virtuous cycle of self-improvement and meaningful employment that allows them to contribute to society. In fact, investing in women’s education in developing countries provides one of the best returns for the money because women put the rewards of their labour right back into their community. This is perhaps an obvious problem in parts of the world where girls aren’t even sent to school, but is it a problem in Canada? Women today make up the majority of undergraduate university students in Canada, but their numbers drop significantly in graduate school and within the sciences and professions such as engineering. Approximately 70% of women who are employed work in teaching, clerical, sales, service, nursing and related fields, while only slightly over a third of doctors, lawyers, and professors in Canada are female. In addition, women tend to earn less than men for the same work (about 75 cents on the dollar) and child poverty in Canada is directly related to women’s poverty, particularly among single mothers. The lack of available quality, affordable child care; short lowpaying maternity leaves; a lack of flexibility within workplaces to accommodate women’s roles as caregivers (both as mothers and as children of ailing parents); and the generally conflicting interests of family and work (both of which would like all of one’s attention), create a less than ideal environment in Canada for women’s participation in the economy. The reality is that we want women to continue to have families and care for them –to be “good mothers” – but we also need to realize the potential that women have to contribute to the economy and society as a whole. In order to do this, we need to create a system in which it is possible for women, and men, to balance the demands of work and family and achieve both personal and professional success. In doing so, all of us will win.

Family Literacy Day celebrated

Gail de Vos told traditional and contemporary legends and myths. Submitted by Lynne Hartwick, Camrose Family Literacy

Important literacy skills such as basic reading, writing and numeracy are a challenge to approximately 30 per cent of the general population both provincially and nationally. Research has confirmed that parents are their children’s first and most important teachers. Long before children go to school, it is parents who lay the base for learning that will take place later. Family Literacy programs help to educate and assist parents to provide the enriching everyday activities that lead to a strong foundation of literacy skills. On Friday evening, several enthusiastic local families gathered at the Camrose Public Library to celebrate families and all of the ways that they learn together. The evening began with award-winning storyteller Gail de Vos as she captured imaginations in the retelling of traditional and contemporary legends and myths. Following was a storytelling workshop for interested parents and games and activities for the whole family. Ending the evening was a social time for families and sponsors to join in camaraderie and reflection. The event was sponsored by the Camrose Public Library and Camrose Family Literacy.

QuitCore program returns to help individuals quit smoking By Murray Green

Alberta Health Services is offering a free workshop series in Camrose so residents can receive the tools and skills they need to quit smoking, and find extra support to ensure they quit for good. The workshop is led by trained professionals. The QuitCore program teaches tobacco users how to develop a plan to quit that will work for them, while providing strategies to deal with recovery symptoms, manage stress and prevent relapse. The program is a series of six weekly

sessions and it connects individuals with others trying to quit. The QuitCore program will be offered from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, from Feb. 22 to March 28, at the Camrose Public Library, 4710-50 Avenue. To register phone the Camrose Addiction Office at 780-672-1181 or toll free at 1-866-710-QUIT (7848). Alberta Health Services continues to increase support for Albertans to quit using tobacco as a key strategy in a five-year health action plan. The plan was developed by the Government of Alberta

and Alberta Health Services and is supported by stable five-year funding from the province. Breaking up is hard

This year the Canadian Council for Tobacco Control sought to highlight the complex relationship that Canadians who smoke have with their cigarettes. Most of us have experienced a relationship that we knew was not good for us, but found it difficult to walk away. This is particularly true for the millions of Canadians who smoke – their "pal" is slowing killing them.

Further, their addiction to and use of tobacco may also be doing the same thing to their loved ones. Tobacco remains the leading preventable cause of disease and death in Canada, killing 37,000 Canadians annually. Direct health care costs from tobacco exceed $4.4 billion per year, and total economic costs are greater than $17 billion per year. For every premature death caused by tobacco, there are at least 20 people living with a tobacco-related illness.

Research continues to show that comprehensive tobacco control programmes change smoking behaviour at the population level and alter social environmental factors that influence smoking. Such local, provincial and national tobacco control programmes are in peril without the renewal of a well-funded Federal Tobacco Control Strategy. The health crisis caused by tobacco products demands the continuation of a strong nation-wide response to prevent and reduce tobacco use and exposure.

Edmonton's chamber choir performs at Augustana By Murray Green

One of only four chamber choirs in this nation, Edmonton's Pro Coro Canada will be performing a rare concert in Camrose at the Faith and Life Chapel at the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15. "The phrase chamber choir comes from the meaning of a group small enough that it should be able to play in someone's living room or in a chamber," said Dr. Russ Mann, executive director for Pro Coro Canada. "Some of the castles had chamber rooms, similar to our living rooms, that would have choirs sing in them. Our choir will sing with anywhere from 16 to 32 voices. In Camrose, we anticipate 25 voices." The concert, entitled Heart Meditations, features a new composition by Canadian composer and saxophonist David Mott, who will be in attendance at the concert. David taught graduate composition at Yale University, and is currently a professor at York University in Toronto, where he teaches composition at undergraduate and graduate levels. His love of music and beauty is ever present and weaves its way into his contemporary classical compositions. Heart Meditations, David's most recent composition, will premiere in Edmonton on Sunday, February 12, at the McDougall United Church. "We have had a long time relationship with Augustana and are good friends with Ardelle Ries. We have wanted to, and have been encouraged to, reach out into non-major urban centres other than Edmonton and Calgary," explained Russ. "We know Camrose is a wonderful choral community. It is really marvelous. So, we thought this would be a very good site (Augustana) to bring in a new Canadian composition and share it with the

Camrose audience. That was a big part of it." Partial proceeds from this concert will support The Augustana Choir international study and performance tour. "The other part was that the Augustana alumni are travelling to Hungary this May and we wanted to have the opportunity to revenueshare with them. It becomes a fundraiser for that choir as well," added Russ. Pro Coro Canada has connections to Camrose and the surrounding district. "David Ault, from the Stettler area, is an Augustana choir alumnus and is singing with Pro Coro Canada. He is also on the board. David will be singing with us and will also be travelling with the alumni to Hungry, so that is a nice connection," said Russ. "In addition, we have had quite a number of singers from Camrose and Augustana. Joy Berg is one of our wonderful sopranos and Nathan sang with us before going on to an international career. Ardelle Ries and Joy-Anne Murphy both sang with us, and there are others as well. This concert is a way of saying thank you to this community for producing such wonderful singers that do end up in our choir." Russ is excited about Heart Meditations. "It is brand new Canadian work by David Mott. He is an interesting individual. He is a baritone saxophone player, a martial arts expert, a Buddhist monk and a university instructor," said Russ. "He has written this piece and he took it to the CBC. They told him if Pro Coro Canada sings it, we (CBC) will record it." The music was recorded in Edmonton. "Once those arrangements were completed, our executive director asked why don't we have Erik Westberg as our conductor, and it happened," said Russ.

"He is very good at bringing new music to the stage." The guest conductor for this concert is Sweden’s Erik Westberg. Erik is an internationally recognized and much sought after choral conductor. He has won many awards including Choral Conductor of the Year by the Federation of Swedish Choral Associations. Erik was the founder of the project Choral Singing for Peace and Justice which involved 8,000 choristers from 56 countries. This project was broadcast to an international television audience to celebrate the millennium. "To have a man of that stature come from Sweden to visit Alberta and work with us and spend some time in Camrose to work with the Augustana choir and students is a wonderful accomplishment," said Russ. "The plan is to bring him out on Monday, so he has about three days with the students and in the community." While in Camrose, Erik and David will present lectures for Augustana music students, and Erik will lead choral workshops with The Augustana Choir, the choirs at the Camrose Composite High School, and with the Camrose Camerata. Sponsors for this presentation include 790 CFCW, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Canada Council for the Arts and The Fairmont Hotel Macdonald. Tickets for the concert are available at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus Bookstore, Candler Art Gallery , from Augustana Choir members and at the door. Additional information can be obtained through Pro Coro Canada's e-mail thechoir@ procoro.ab.ca, Valerie Bailey, Department of Fine Arts, University of Alberta, Augustana Campus vabailey@ualberta.ca or phone 780-679-1532.

In loving memory of

Caroline Elvina Hilde

Lucille Siwak

Caroline Hilde passed away peacefully and gracefully to be forever with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at the age of 94 years on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at Heritage Square Residental Care Home in Vernon, BC. She is survived by her four children Marlene (Otto) Streberg, James (Mariann) Johnson, Karen (Leonard) Schlaut and Kathy (Ron) Strand; three stepchildren Kathleen (Karl) Janzen, Ken (Julie) Hilde and Sharon (Ed) Davis; her sister Doreen Likness; her brother Donald Anderson; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her first husband Clifford Johnson in 1963; and her second husband Andrew Hilde in 2003; her brothers Roy, Wilfred, Wallace, Arnt and Edwin; her sisters Mildred, Olga, Connie and Evelyn; and stepson Raynor. Caroline was born on December 10, 1917 on a farm near Armena, AB, one of 12 children born to John Alfred Anderson and Andrea Serene Anderson (nee Moe). At the age of eight, she moved to a farm near Donalda, Alberta. She attended a one-room country school. While still in Grade 9, she left school to work for local farm families, doing chores and helping with housework. Caroline married a neighborhood farm boy, Clifford Johnson, in 1939, and they began farming north of Donalda. It was there they raised their four children. Clifford loved hunting and fishing, so Mom was used to cooking wild meat. Mom’s farm life was typical of the early years. She helped with chores, did housework, cooked large meals for threshing crews as needed to support Clifford on the farm. At an early age, she learned to sew and spent many hours creating special memories quilting with her daughters. In 1967, Caroline married Andrew Hilde and moved to Vernon where Andy lived and worked as a steam engineer at Dellview Hospital. Caroline and Andy enjoyed many of the same things – cross-country skiing, golfing and camping. Music was also a big part of their lives. Mom learned to play on an old pump organ and later took piano lessons. Andy played the Hawaiian guitar and violin. Music became a part of the family visits. Precious are the memories they have left for us. Church and her hope and trust in her Savior were central to Caroline’s life. She was a member of Living Word Lutheran Church for many years, faithfully attending every church event when possible and helping where she could, mostly by playing the piano at church and for senior care home services. A Graveside Service was held on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. from Bethany Donalda Lutheran Cemetery with Rev. Karl Janzen officiating. Memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the charity of one’s choice. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Mrs. Lucille Siwak of Camrose passed away on Saturday, January 29, 2012 at the age of 81 years. Lucille Christina Siwak, daughter of James and Lydia Carlson, was born in Westlock Hospital on March 6, 1930, the oldest of seven children. Her family farmed in the Clyde area for eight years before moving to Sexsmith, and later to Hastings Lake, and then settling in Camrose in 1943. Finishing high school in Camrose, she moved to Edmonton to pursue her nursing career at the Misericordia Hospital and graduated as an RN. It was here that she met the love of her life, Walter John (Si) Siwak. They were married on October 18, 1951 and began their married life in Saskatoon as Doctor and nurse. After one year, they returned to Camrose where Si became a partner of the Smith Clinic. They had four children, three in Camrose, and the youngest born in Montreal, where Si obtained his surgery degree. They returned to Camrose in 1962. Lucille was actively involved in volunteer work. For many years, she did patients’ hair at St. Mary’s Hospital, and delivered library books to nursing homes. All who knew Lucille recognized her zest for life, her forward thinking, eternal optimism, and sense of humour. She was a lifetime member of Camrose Curling Club, the president and treasurer of Alberta Ladies’ Golf Association, (and active golfer), a longstanding member of the United Church choir, and a founding member of the Probus Club. Her precious ladies’ bridge club has had the same members in it for over 50 years. In later years, she took up Tai Chi, sang with the Golden Tones, joined the 50-Plus gang, and became a Red Hatter, at which point she was never home! She was a voracious reader, loved her needlework, and crocheted blankets for all eight of her great-grandchildren. She also loved to travel, and was the first to jump at any trips or cruises. Lucille will be lovingly remembered by her three children Beverly (Bruce) Heroux, Linda Siwak, and Kenton Siwak; three grandchildren Tina (Ed) Henry, Paul (Melanie) Heroux, and Tanya (Wade) Lee; eight great grandchildren Austin, Morgan, Hailey, Kira, Bronson, Caleb, Gavyn and Eve; sister Shirley Keyser; brother Glen Carlson; sister-in-law Marlene Carlson; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Lucille was predeceased by her husband, daughter, parents, two brothers and two sisters. Funeral Services were held on Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 1:00 p.m., from Camrose United Church with Alan Richards and Mary Ann Pastuck officiating. Interment followed in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. If friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to The A.L.S. Martin Jordan

August 30, 1927 – February 8, 2008 Forever in our hearts in a very special place. No words we speak can ever say, How much we miss you every day Sadly missed, never forgotten, always loved. Love your wife, Ruth and family

who passed away on February 8, 2002 Ten years will pass on this day, And my heart to you would like to say, How much I love and miss you, In the home that is lonesome today. I remember the day that I met you, And the day that God made you mine, I remember the day that He took you away, And I will to the end of time. Your memory is my keepsake, With which I’ll never part, God has you in His keeping, I have you forever in my heart. Love Josie and family

Jayson Nuera, of Camrose, took the home team paper to the National Mall in Washington, D.C. One of the highlights was a chance to see the Lincoln Memorial - a tribute completed in 1922 to honor the 16th President of the United States. The site has been the location for many famous speeches, including Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech delivered on August 28, 1963. Our thanks go out to Jayson for taking the Booster to such a historical site! Your cheque for $10 is in the mail. Do you enjoy reading The Camrose Booster? Show us with a picture! Drop off, mail or email a photo of you reading your Booster while vacationing. Be sure your travel destination can be identified by a sign or landmark. Or, have someone take your photo while you’re enjoying the home team paper in an unlikely situation. Each week one entry submitted will be published in The Camrose Booster. A $10.00 cash prize will be paid to you if your entry is published. A $50.00 grand prize will be awarded for the best picture of the 2012 calendar year. Be sure to take the home team paper with you wherever you travel next for a chance to win! 4925-48 Street, Camrose Phone 780-672-3142 Email: ads@camrosebooster.com
