Polei nails hole-in-one using a seven wood By Murray Green

Susan Polei only needed one stroke to sink her golf ball on Saturday, June 23. On hole eight she used a seven wood from 142 yards to record a hole-in-one. Susan's great shot came exactly one week after the Camrose Golf Course had its second hole-in-one of the season. Debbie Bruinsma from St. Albert shot her perfect hole at number 14 with approximately a 120 yard shot. She also used a seven wood on June 16.

When Paula Searle, Lucy Ernst, Nadine Jarrett and Kim Thain ventured to San Francisco to run the Nike Women’s Half Marathon last October, they never imagined they would end up behind bars - in Alcatraz nonetheless! But luckily they had The Camrose Booster with them so they could catch up on hometown news while passing the time. Our thanks to Lucy for sending us a picture with the home team paper in such an iconic location. For her efforts we are sending her a cheque for $10.00. Do you enjoy reading The Camrose Booster? Show us with a picture! Drop off, mail or email a photo of you reading your Booster while vacationing. Be sure your travel destination can be identified by a sign or landmark. Or, have someone take your photo while you’re enjoying the home team paper in an unlikely situation. Each week one entry submitted will be published in The Camrose Booster. A $10.00 cash prize will be paid to you if your entry is published. A $50.00 grand prize will be awarded each January for the best entry submitted in the previous calendar year. Residents present ideas for economic development By Dan Jensen

Camrosians had the chance to provide input on a new City of Camrose economic development plan at a community focus session June 27. "I was extremely pleased with the turnout," said City of Camrose economic development officer Ray Telford. "I would have been pleased with 20 but we ended up with 40. We had a lot of not for profit people who are involved in the social aspect of the community but we also had quite a few business people. To get people from both sectors working together was really good." As expected, the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta was identified as a Camrose strength. "One comment we heard at the meeting several times was that Augustana will help to increase the younger population and increase the number of families living here," said Telford. Other strengths that were identified were a varied housing market, strong volunteer core, quality of life, strong downtown leadership, and the presence of two rail services. "Having both CP and CN Rail here helps when we are looking to bring companies in to do business," said Telford. Weaknesses that were identified were a low employment rate (too difficult to attract employees to Camrose), the lack of an intra-city bus service, and

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Western Sky Management associates Trev Ruberry and Tim Keating check some of the ideas generated from the Camrose community economic development plan workshop held at the EnCana Arena on June 27. The associates will compile the information and present an action plan for the city to attract new businesses to the area.

the declining number of physicians. "We can't control the decision by Greyhound to remove bus service but we may be able to have discussions with entrepreneurs that may have ideas on how to get a good and profit-

able bus service running," said Telford. "As for doctors, that is a problem that is being faced now right across the province." Opportunities on which those attending felt Camrose could capitalize were the con-

tinued expansion of Augustana and event tourism. "It was felt that we could do more to attract tourists to the city," said Telford. Topics covered in the meeting's breakout sessions included communication between the

City and its residents, investments, business attraction and infrastructure. "We spent a lot of time talking about the vision for economic development in Camrose because economic development has changed quite a bit over the last 15 years," said Telford. "It's no longer all about smokestacks and manufacturing. It is also about social economics and making Camrose a great place to live and stay." The City of Camrose economic plan is being put together by Western Sky Management and Associates using input it receives from stakeholders as well as the City's current vision statement (to promote any economic initiative that will assist in the maintenance, expansion or creation of employment by sustaining existing businesses, or by encouraging new companies to locate in the city). The end product – expected to be presented to council for approval in September – will include a community-based action plan for economic development, a timeline for the implementation of projects, with milestone dates, a criteria for measuring the success of the plan. "It will provide a timeline for doing certain projects," said Telford. Council identified an economic development plan as one of the top priorities for Camrose in last year's strategic planning process.

St. Mary's Hospital dedicates new chapel By Dan Jensen

Covenant Health St. Mary's Hospital dedicated its new chapel in a formal mass June 25. "This chapel is extremely important to us as a faith-based organization," said St. Mary's executive director Cherylyn Antymniuk. "It is a quiet space to go to reflect, sit quietly or pray." The chapel has permanent seating for 45 and the capability of adding extra chars as needed. The doors will be left open 24 hours a day. "We have had one mass in there already and plan to have mass once a month," said Antymniuk. "We're also going to be holding regular services once we work out the logistics. It's going to be a facility for many faiths, not just Catholics." The chapel has been drawing very positive comments. "One of the surgeons e-mailed me and said it was an extremely welcoming place," said Antymniuk. "The staff members have been very impressed with the look and the layout." The chapel was designed by the architectural firm of Rockliff Pierzchajlo Architects based on plans first drawn in 2003 when it was determined that the multipurpose room was not sufficient to meet the needs. "The multi-purpose room was almost impossible to book because it was so busy with meetings," said Antymniuk. An official ground-breaking ceremony was held June 12, 2011. "We didn't expect it to be open until fall but everything came together quite nicely," said

Covenant Health St. Mary's Hospital executive director Cherylyn Antymniuk and chaplain Rev. Dean Shingoose in the new chapel.

Antymniuk. "The people from Fillmore Construction were extremely good to work with." The chapel was funded through the generous support of the Sisters of Providence of St. Vincent de Paul, Catholic Health of Alberta, estate bequests, numerous donors, volunteers and community supporters. The total amount raised from the community was approximately $350,000.

"The community has always been so supportive of St. Mary's, not only in providing funds but in volunteering time to sit with patients or deliver trays," said Antymniuk. "The community has always rallied for us and we are fortunate to have that." Furnishings were purchased from the St. Mary's Hospital Foundation budget. The chapel dedication mass was performed by Father Marc

Cramer. Sister Rita Gleason, from the Sisters of Providence, was the pianist, while Nicholas Sommer was the leader of song. Some of the notable attendees were Covenant Health board chair John Brennan, Covenant Health senior vice president, operations Linda Revell, Covenant Health vice president Sheli Murphy, Covenant Health vice president, mission, ethics and spirituality Gordon Self, and

St. Mary's Hospital Foundation chair John Howard. Covenant Health is committed to serving people of all faiths, cultures and circumstances through a holistic approach to care by healing the body, enriching the mind and nurturing the soul. The chapel honours the legacy of the Sisters of Providence of St. Vincent de Paul, who founded St. Mary's Hospital in 1924.

CELLULAR, PLEATED AND ROMAN SHADES

County cancels pelletizer project By Murray Green

Camrose County councillors have changed their minds. Although the county budgeted $150,000 for the purchase and installation of a pelletizer for the disposal of screenings at the County Seed Cleaning Plant, the decision was halted due to some concerns from agricultural fieldman and environmental services manager Paul King. Council authorized Paul's department to research the costs, feasibility, markets and

feed stocks for a pelletizer to be installed at the Camrose County Seed Cleaning Plant. "Demand for pellets is seasonal and temporary at best, feed stocks are 100 per cent weather and disease-factor related and may or may not occur in any given season, Paul reported to council. "One plant in Lougheed has actually shut down. They had installed a pelletizer for the disposal of ergot screenings and it has since ceased operation due to composition of the pellets and the

lack of lignin, resulting in dusting and the pellets not remaining solid. They found it wasn't viable and that they would have to add straw to it." Currently there are no pelletizers operating within the county or surrounding area strictly for the purpose of ergot screenings pelletizing. "We have been able to secure an alternative disposal source where the producer is burning the screenings in his farm heating system," concluded Paul.

Council approves allocation of MSI operating grants By Dan Jensen

City council approved the allocation of Municipal Sustainability Initiative operating grants totalling $26,700 to seven community organizations July 3. Camrose NeighborAid Center and Camrose and District Seniors' Information Society will each received $5,000, while the Family Violence Action Society and Camrose Women's Shelter Society will each receive $4,100.

About Time Productions Association will receive $3,600, Camrose and District Victim Services will receive $2,900 and Camrose Spirals Jump Rope Club will receive $2,000. The MSI operating grant committee reviewed 15 grant applications June 27 totalling $119,750. Information taken into consideration by the committee in making a decision to recommend the organization for fund-

ing included whether or not the organization receives other funding from the City, whether or not it has received an operating grant in the past two years, whether or not the project supports long term sustainability, whether or not it meets an identified local need, whether or not the funding request was for a one-time project, whether or not the project is sustainable in future years, the impact on city residents, and

local, provincial and federal affiliations. The committee used a judgment process to determine the amount of grant funds that should be allocated to each organization. Council also decided to review the overall approach to funding all non-profit organizations in relation to the City's annual budget process. "We receive requests for funding in the fall and distribute

this money as well," said councillor Max Lindstrand. "It would seem to make sense that we fold this into one process rather than have two different sets of applications." Councillor Daryl Shillington said the earlier the organizations have their funding approved the earlier they can finalize their budgets for the year. Members of the MSI operating grant committee were councillors Lindstrand, Blatz and Wood.

the long weekend. The team of 16 and 17-yearold girls claimed the provincial midget C fastball championship in Leduc, July 2, with a thrilling final at-bat win over a tough opponent from Sedgewick. "It was good to see the girls do so well," said Camrose Crossfire coach Kevin Petryshen. "It was a fitting cap to a great year." The Crossfire advanced to the tournament's deciding contest after going undefeated in the six-team round robin and then trouncing Drumheller 7-2 in six innings in the semifinal. "We only had about 15 minutes between the end of the game against Drumheller and the start of the final against Sedgewick, so the girls had to go and quickly get some food and liquid," said Petryshen. The Crossfire fell behind after a shaky middle inning but managed to storm back, and were ahead by two at the start of what turned out to be a fireworks filled seventh. "Sedgewick tied the game in their half of the inning but our first batter in the bottom of the seventh hit a walk-off home run to win it for us," said Petryshen. The Crossfire proved to be the class of the Central Alberta Fastball League during the regular season, defeating any team that crossed their path. The strongest challenge came from the squad from Lacombe. "Lacombe gave us a pretty good game just about every time we played them," said Petryshen. The Crossfire also attended two tournaments (not including the provincial tournament), one put on by the Red Deer Ladies' Fastball Association over the first weekend in June. "We had a couple of games there where we got beat pretty good by the ladies' teams," said Petryshen. "I think it opened the eyes of our players and showed them what they have to do in order to be successful." The Crossfire could be an even stronger team next year. "All the girls were in their first year at the midget level, which means they have another year of eligibility," said Petryshen. "If they decide to stay where they are and not move up to the midget b level for a chance to go to the western Canadians we would still field a very good team." Petryshen was impressed with the character and spirit shown by the members of the Crossfire during the course of the season. "They were always pulling for each other and there was always a bunch of them that would hang out after the game," he said. "I didn't have to name a single captain because in my eyes they were all captains." Petryshen began coaching girls' fastball in 2011 after about 12 to 13 years of coaching boys' baseball and a couple of years of coaching girls' baseball. His hope is that the members of the Crossfire will have learned something this season that will help them for the rest of their lives.

Holding tanks allowed to save upgrade costs By Murray Green

Some Camrose County ratepayers were spared a $30,000 bill. Councillors gave second and third reading to remove the wastewater disposal section of Land Use Bylaw 1142 on June 12. "Section 622 was incorporated into the Land Use Bylaw in 2008 because of ongoing concerns that landowners were circumventing the safety codes regulations in relation to private sewage by disconnecting an open discharge system, having the septic tank inspected as a holding tank, obtaining compliance under the safety codes regulations and then re-hooking the illegal open discharge system up," planning manager Anjah Howard told council.

In light of this growing problem the plumbing inspector recommended that holding tanks be eliminated on lots over one acre in size. Council supported the recommendation and included the suggestion in the Land Use Bylaw. However, that has since been overturned. "Concern has now surfaced that the limitation on holding tanks is too onerous. The only adjacent municipality that has similar limitations is Leduc County," explained Anjah. "They only allow a holding tank if the safety codes officer does not feel there is a reasonable alternative due to setbacks and soil conditions. The other adjacent municipalities do not have any limita-

tions on holding tanks in their planning documents." The old regulations said that no holding tank shall be permitted on a parcel of land larger than one acre in Camrose County unless a report done by a professional engineer indicates there are no other suitable options and the development officer agrees to the recommendation. "This brings us closer to what other municipalities in the area are doing and matches the requirements of the Alberta Private Sewage Disposal Regulation," added Anjah. Lacombe, Stettler and Beaver counties all wrote letters to say they had no objection to the change. The City of Camrose

administration also submitted a letter stating their views. Councillors voted unanimously to allow holding tanks due to the high cost of upgrading systems that are currently in good working order. "This comes down to affordability for people," said Amber Hill of Fossen Excavating. "People can't afford a $30,000 bill for a new sewage system. They like the idea of a holding tank and paying the costs to have trucks come in and clean the system. When I see $30,000, that is actually happening to some people. They are often looking at treatment tanks, dousing tanks, and the systems are so phenomenal and the costs are very large. It is unfair for me to tell these people that

you can't live in the country because you can't afford this set-up cost. When these systems fail, they contaminate the ground and people don't often know it. With a holding tank, it is sucked out and treated properly." Current systems may be working better than new systems. “Mine has been operating for 54 years without failure. It’s a pump out system,” ratepayer Don Steere said. “It’s been working flawlessly for 54 years, so why would I want to spend $30,000 like my neighbour did down the road? And the first thing that his did was fail.” An amendment was also made to the private sewage bylaw to allow holding tanks.

PEN POINTS by Berdie Fowler

Treat them well and visitors will return! On June 27, the citizens of Camrose were invited to a public meeting for the purpose of providing input into an economic development plan for the city of Camrose. Ray Telford, Camrose economic development officer, said he was pleased with the attendance of about forty persons who represented both not-for-profits and business sectors. It is very important to have both these segments of the community involved in economic planning because they represent the two essentials that attract people to live and work in a community: one is the opportunity for employment to support a family, and the other is a safe and attractive community with amenities that enhance their well-being – that is, a place in which they would like to live. Tourism is a major industry with the potential to boost the economy of even the smallest communities – in proportion to the effort that is put into attracting and providing service to visitors. It is necessary to understand that a tourist is any non-resident who comes to a community for any reason – for service of any kind: entertainment, education, to shop, to picnic in the park, take an Art Walk, sight-see, or attend special events like Big Valley Jamboree, high profile sports events, Bull Congress, trade show, dog show, conference, seminar, convention, health services, whatever. The special events may not make a profit but the economy of the community is boosted by the dollars visitors spend at retail shops, hotels, restaurants, gas stations, et cetera. These dollars circulate in the community about seven times as they pass through the hands of employees who spend the money on their families for food, shelter and various other needs and wants. Obviously the more visitors we attract, hold in our community longer and convince to return with friends, the more vibrant will be our community’s economic health. Each of us has the opportunity to play a part in achieving that goal. If we have friends or relatives visiting, we can entertain and/or detain them with a round of golf, or visit museums, or take the children to the swimming pool. Each of us can be a source of information about what to see and do in our community and area. Such hospitality is effective. I recall showing our Camrose to a sales representative from one of our Booster suppliers from Ontario; the unexpected result was having his son enroll at Augustana University. Similarly, a chance encounter with a young Chinese salesman in a Hong Kong furniture store resulted in four students from there enrolling at Augustana. It’s impossible to over-emphasize the importance of sincere, friendly, helpful and cheerful service to tourists – that is, any visitors to our community for any reason. Everyone who meets a visitor can be a tourist attraction – or not. If visitors are well served and happy, they will return and recommend this place to others; if not satisfied, they won’t. Tourism is only one arm of economic development but it is one in which everyone can and, hopefully will, play a significant and helpful role. Treat them well and visitors will return!

Ford raising funds for literacy By Dan Jensen

He had so much fun with it last year that he's going to do it again. Camrose resident Alan Ford will be cycling 100 km in support of family literacy programs in the Tour de l'Alberta July 22. The Tour de l'Alberta has been organized by the Edmonton Bicycle and Touring Club the last 25 years. "It is sort of a local version of the Tour de France because all the communities it goes through – Morinville, Alcomdale, Gibbons and Bon Accord have a French background," said Ford. The other connection is that it is held the same day that the Tour de France ends. Ford was pleased with how smoothly the Tour de l'Alberta went in 2011. "It is a very well organized event. The road was a little congested at times because of the number of cyclists but we started early enough in the morning that

we didn't have to fight with the vehicles." In Morinville, bikers received a lot of encouragement and high fives from people who were watching from the side of the road. "They were celebrating their community's 100th anniversary," said Ford. Money raised by Ford will first go through the Alberta Literacy, which will issue a charitable tax receipt, then be returned to the Camrose Family Literacy to assist with the purchase of reading materials for the Story Sacks and Read to Me programs. Read to Me Story Bags are distributed at the four-month Well Baby Clinic. Ford feels an investment in early childhood literacy is money well-spent. "The return you get from investing in literacy is well in excess of anything the financial markets can generate. The kids who are exposed to language

and get an understanding and appreciation of the spoken and written word at an early age require less in the way of remedial assistance and attention when they start school. They are started on a track that almost guarantees their success. Telling stories, hearing stories and reading stories is the basis of understanding our place in the world and is the foundation of all adult literacy skills." Ford raised just over $1,000 for Camrose Family Literacy in 2011, a total he would like to exceed this time around. Donations may be made by contacting Ford at 780-672-2383 or Camrose Family Literacy at 780-672-8754. Cheques may also be mailed to Camrose Family Literacy at 4707-56 Street, 2nd Floor, Camrose, T4V 2C4. Ford was a member of the Munsch a Bunch of Miles for Literacy crew, which successfully raised funds for and awareness of childhood literacy.

Camrose to celebrate its culture By Dan Jensen

Camrose is going to have another opportunity to celebrate its rich culture. Camrose Arts Society has been awarded $5,000 by the Government of Alberta to assist with event planning for the 2012 Alberta Culture Days celebration September 28 to 30. The arts society is one of 64 community organizations in 38 communities across the province that are sharing culture days funding totalling $375,000. "One of the criteria for the funding is that we partner with other organizations to put on events and programs that are free and family-friendly," said Camrose arts diriector Jane Cherry-Lemire. Camrose Arts Society received $5,000 for an Alberta Culture Days celebration in 2011. "The response we had to it last year was quite good," said Cherry-Lemire. "We're hoping that it is something we can continue on a yearly basis. There is definitely more room for community participation." The Society had applied to make Camrose an Alberta Culture Days Feature Celebration Site – a status that would have increased the funding for programming to $20,000. "Only five communities are chosen to be Feature Celebration Sites," said Cherry-Lemire. "We're hoping that we will get that designation sometime in the future." The Camrose celebration will get underway with Three's a Charm, an event featuring performances by The Wiremen, The Bloozhounds and Punch Drunk Cabaret. Camrose Adult Learning Council will be hosting writing workshops as it did last year, while local artist Audrey Pfannmuller will be offering free art workshops. A matinee performance is scheduled to be held on the Saturday, although the performer has yet to be confirmed. A Kaleidoscope of Arts featuring local performers will be held at the Bailey Theatre on the final day (Sunday). Camrose Camera Club will be bringing in a model for tasteful and artistic nude photographs. Cherry-Lemire has been having discussions with the Camrose Multicultural Society about being part of the celebration. ""Our hope," she said, "is that they will have multicultural displays and maybe put on a performance or two." While the Camrose Arts Society is happy with the support from the government, it knows more community support will be needed. Anyone who would like to be a sponsor is encouraged to contact Cherry-Lemire at 780-672-9949. "The $5,000 only goes so far," said Cherry-Lemire. The City of Camrose provided a $1,000 sponsorship in 2011. Alberta Culture Minister Heather Klimchuk expects the Alberta Culture Days celebration will help strengthen community spirit, showcase local talent and boost the impact and reach of existing cultural programming.

The community has graciously supported the Boys and Girls Club through the years and in return the club has provided a wide range of youth development programs. Boys and Girls Club of Wetaskiwin has been a part of the community for the last 23 years. Chop Suey on the Prairies After riding in the Wetaskiwin Pioneer Days Parade, and

before the MS Bikeathon Dinner in Camrose on June 9, I spent a very enjoyable afternoon in Millet at a Museum event honoring pioneer women, and also kicking off the arrival of "Chop Suey on the Prairies", a mobile exhibit telling the story of Chinese cafes on the prairies. I also really enjoyed the traditional Chinese Dance. Leaving Ministry of Justice and Solicitor General I had the pleasure of working with a talented group of people in my time as Minister of Justice and Solicitor General. On June 19, Mardell and I were invited to a dinner with my Executive Leadership Team (ELT) and other Justice and Ministry staff. My previous Deputy Minister, Ray Bodnarek, presented a statue of Lady Justice to me. Some of the other staff gave some accessories like a pink cowboy hat to wish me luck in my new appointment. National Aboriginal Day I had the opportunity to celebrate National Aboriginal Day at Jubilee Park in Wetaskiwin. National Aboriginal Day takes place annually on June 21 and was set up to celebrate the accomplishments and culture of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis. I watched and participated in some of the traditional ceremonies; it was quite an honour to be involved in such a capacity. Laurie Holte Retirement Unfortunately, we lost a very

important person in our Camrose Constituency office this last month. Laurie has been with the office for ten years. Her experience and unique skill set made her invaluable to the office. She will be missed not only as a hard working individual but also as a bright addition to the office. I know that one of the things Laurie wanted to do was golf more. She’s already gotten a hole-inone so retirement is going well for her! Investing in Albertans

On April 23, Albertans made a choice for change that will usher in a new era of prosperity and progress. This desire for change was heard by all of us on the campaign trail, and as part of your government, I will work hard to earn your trust and to exceed your expectations. With the commencement of the 28th Legislative Assembly, Premier Alison Redford introduced a strong mandate that is clear, focused and targetdriven. The first order of business was Bill 1: The Workers’ Compensation Amendment Act, which will guarantee workers’ compensation coverage for first responders suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder. Our first responders rush to our aid in times of trouble, and your government will be the first in Canada to do the same for them. As we move forward, one of the top priorities remains invest-

ing in families and communities through initiatives that give Albertans the tools they need to take charge of their health. We will design and implement a plan to extend the province’s network of continuing care centres. In addition, we will continue to expand family care clinics in consultation with local stakeholders and the dedicated professionals who staff the publicly-funded health care system. The government mandate also focuses on securing Alberta’s economic future by investing in public services and infrastructure and growing a competitive knowledge-based economy. We will leverage our invaluable human capital, strong industries and our world-leading resource stewardship to position Alberta as a pioneer on the national and international stage. In pursuit of our goal to strengthen Alberta’s national presence, your government will open a new office in Ottawa to help forge stronger relations within Canada’s capital and advocate for Alberta’s perspective on important federal and provincial matters. In partnership with the federal government, we will establish a competitive, transparent and scientifically credible environmental monitoring system to ensure we continue to enjoy the pristine beauty that characterizes our province.

Alberta’s strength is a result of its citizens’ perseverance and pride. Generations of Albertans like you have made Alberta what it is today. Your government recognizes this and will continue to work with you to build a strong policy framework suited for our time and place in the world; one in harmony with Albertan’s socially progressive values and fiscally conservative beliefs. Through these initiatives and goals we will preserve Albertans’ special identity as trustees of the western spirit; a proud, independent and selfreliant people tempered by compassion as wide and sweeping as the prairies we live on and the land we love. Province asks public to help create Social Policy Framework

Albertans are invited to share their ideas about how social policy can achieve better outcomes for Alberta’s children, families, individuals and communities. The Speak. Share. Thrive. public engagement provides Albertans opportunities at www. socialpolicy.alberta.ca and at community-led discussions to help create a social policy framework that will guide decisions about the relevance and effectiveness of social policies and programs for Albertans. CAMROSE & DAYSLAND

Artur “Art” Wilhelm Lehmann February 27, 1928 – June 30, 2012 Artur “Art” was born on February 27, 1928 in Oseln, Goldinger, Latvia. Art’s childhood years were spent there. The Lehmann family left Latvia in the fall of 1939 and went to Lindeneck, Warthengau, Poland. With his Uncle Ludwig’s help, Art applied for an immigration permit to come to Canada. It was granted and issued on December 6, 1950 in Edmonton, Alberta and he became a Canadian Citizen on November 19, 1957 in Wetaskiwin. Art, with his brother Walde and his sister Helen, on November 30, 1951, left for Bremerhaven, London, England on a steam ship. The “Beaverbrae” steam ship arrived in Saint John, New Brunswick on December 23, 1951. They took the train to Edmonton where they were picked up and taken to Westlock, Alberta. Art resided there until 1955. He later moved to Wetaskiwin, then to Camrose in 1960, where he lived the rest of his life. Art worked for Edmonton’s McGregor Telephone & Power Company from April 1952 to July 1957, he then went on to work at Calgary Power. Art received his “Power Electrician” certificate from the Department of Labor on May 21, 1968. Art spent 31 years working for Calgary Power which became TransAlta Utilities, and later Fortis, and it was an accomplishment for him to receive his 25-year pin from them. On March 12, 1961 in Wetaskiwin, Art married Lydia Gehlert. They started their family with Randy, Steven, Lynn, Allen, Gordon and one predeceased infant son Daniel. They were later blessed with four grandchildren Alexandra, Nicolas, Dylan and Shania. Art was at his happiest when taking part in his hobbies including hunting with his brothers, and later, his sons Steven and Allen. He enjoyed target shooting at the rifle range and reloading his own shells. He loved to polka and enjoyed listening to all dance music. Towards his final days, you would find him playing the record player and listening to the song All Your Truth and All Your Loving sung by Heintje in German. Art knew his time was getting close to the end by his comments to his wife Lydia and his children. He was always sitting in a different chair in his home as if to see it from all angles before his time was up. Sunday night, June 23, 2012, Art went into the hospital. Thursday evening, June 28, 2012, Art had a bad spell and at one point said “Got to go up!” but then struggled to sit up and said “I’m not ready!” On Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 5:25 p.m. with his wife Lydia holding his right hand and his daughter Lynn holding his left, his sister Helen and nephew Karl present in the hospital room, Art was ready and he left. Funeral Services were held on Friday, July 6, 2012 at 1:00 p.m., from Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. Jeff Nilsson officiating. Interment has taken place in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. If friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to Grace Lutheran Church or to a charity of your choice. To send condolences please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Mike Seniuk Mike Seniuk, beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away in the Louise Jensen Continuing Care Center on Sunday, July 1, 2012 at the age of 98 years. Mike was born on October 29, 1913 to Anton and Sophie Seniuk. He grew up in Camrose until the age of 12 when his parents bought a small farm and moved to Haight, Alberta. While living in Haight, he met the love of his life Jean Rabby. They were married on September 26, 1936. Mike was an energetic, hard-working and charismatic man. He was an ardent farmer and took many risks to make his farm one of the more successful operations in the Ryley-Holden area. Always a community-minded spirit, Mike worked on the Rural Electrification Association and the seed cleaning plant in Holden. He was also instrumental in establishing a Roman Catholic Church in Ryley. Not only did he canvass parishioners for funds to build the church, he also spent days helping renovate the building the group purchased for the church. Mike was a strong active member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a Grand Knight in the Holden branch, which operated under the Vegreville Council. When he retired to Camrose, he achieved his 4th Degree. Even after he retired, Mike did not lose his sense of community. He threw himself into volunteer work. He worked at Camrose Food Bank, picking up goods from suppliers as well as serving the people who required the use of the food bank. He also drove for Meals on Wheels, and called bingos at Bethany Care Centre. Left to cherish his memory are his loving children: daughters Eleanor (Ted) Brinker of Camrose, and Peggy (Arnold) Thiessen of Edmonton; one son Barry (Sandra) Seniuk of Edmonton; one foster son Clayton Hansen of Edmonton; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-greatgrandchildren; one brother Ed (Audrey) Seniuk of Drayton Valley; and one sister Doris (Orville) Stark of Sherwood Park. Mike was predeceased by his wife Jean; parents Anton and Sophie Seniuk; two brothers George and Nick Seniuk; two sisters Teresa (Tessie) Kolodychuk and Patricia (Pat) Gawreluck; and one foster son James Paniec. Prayer Services were held at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, July 5, 2012 at Burgar Memorial Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 6, 2012 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Camrose (5010-48A Avenue), with Father Larry Pedersen as celebrant. Interment has taken place in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. To send condolences please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Central Agencies Home of the Week

Country living with extra benefits

Lorne Broen By Dan Jensen

If you like animals and wide open spaces but still want to be close to all the action, this week's home will be a perfect fit. The 1,494 square foot bungalow is located on 50 acres of grain land approximately 15 minutes east of Camrose on Highway 13, just across the highway from the village of Bawlf. "The property is totally fenced and includes a 32- by 56-foot horse barn that has nine box stalls with auto waterers and unfinished wash rack," said Central Agencies realtor Lorne Broen. The property also features steel corrals and a 28 by 30-foot double garage with nine-foot ceilings. The house has a large twotiered front deck with wide staircase. "It's the perfect place to host barbecues or simply enjoy those

long summer evenings," said Broen. A cathedral style window that provides a view of the spacious back yard, a vaulted beam ceiling, and a fireplace are a few of the highlights of the main floor living area. The kitchen has an angled work island, beautiful wood cabinets and plenty of counter space, as well as a handy corner pantry. The adjacent dinette is well-suited for intimate meals or bigger family gatherings. The home has two bedrooms on the main floor. The master bedroom has its own en suite with jacuzzi tub, glass-enclosed shower, and a walk-in his and hers closet. Three verticallyshaped windows let you wake up with the morning sun. The four-piece main bathroom has a large counter and mirror.

A main-floor laundry can be found just inside the back entrance. The lower level is partially finished with two bedrooms, as well as a huge utility storage area. The future family area is open to a wide range of wonderful design possibilities. The home draws its water from a 200-foot well as well as the lake. Yearly taxes on the property are a steal of a deal at just $1,771. Chattels included with the home are four major appliances, the satellite dish and all window coverings. This home is attractively priced at $689,000. You may see it for yourself by attending an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. this Thursday, July 12, or by contacting Lorne Broen at: Central Agencies Inc., 4870-51 Street, Camrose, 780-672-4495 780-679-7797 cell

Bike tour raises awareness about watershed's importance The Battle River Watershed Alliance and the cycling “Streamers” have completed a five-day, 550 km bike tour for the health of our watershed and communities. On Sunday, June 17, nine cyclists left Battle Lake on a journey of watershed proportions. “We recognize that in order to have healthy people and healthy communities, we need a healthy environment. That’s why we planned this ride,” says Nathalie Stanley, Education and Outreach Coordinator at the Battle River Watershed Alliance (BRWA). “We are 70 per cent water. We can’t pretend water quality doesn’t affect us!” The number of cyclists varied by day, with 12 people taking part in at least one day of the tour. The longest day of the tour was the last day, covering 170 km from Edgerton to Battleford. "It was an unreal experience to be able to dip my wheels where the Battle River starts at Battle Lake and then dip my wheels where it meets the North Saskatchewan River. Along the way I got to meet and ride with new people, cross the river multiple times and see new areas of the watershed,” commented Shane Mascarin, Range Biologist at CFW Wainwright. “It was an eye-opening experience to how great our little watershed is and the people it holds." Along the way the BRWA held community events in Ponoka, Camrose, and Wainwright and visited classrooms in Ponoka and Hardisty to promote the message of how our health depends on our active lifestyles and clean environment.

A group shot of Battle River Streamers on first day at Battle Lake.

In a community effort to collectively travel 7,500 km (a kilometre for every kilometre of tributaries of the Battle River) local citizens and citizens from Vancouver to Quebec to Germany biked, walked, rollerbladed and even canoed to show support for the ride. “The support of our friends and community members was wonderful,” says Stanley. “We hope that the ride will inspire more people to get outside, be

active and appreciate the beauty of our watershed. Appreciation of its beauty and the many valuable functions it provides is an important starting point for its protection.” Alberta Health Services and the Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society helped put on the event. Sponsors were: ATCO Power, Encana, Flagstaff County, PAMZ, UFA, Red the Agency and the Green Gear bike shop. For more information on the

BRWA or the bike ride, visit the BRWA webpage at www.battleriverwatershed.ca/bike-tour or contact Nathalie at nathalie@ battleriverwatershed.ca or by phone at 780-672-0276. The Battle River Watershed Alliance is an inclusive, collaborative and consensus-based community partnership that is working to guide, support and deliver actions to sustain or improve the health of the Battle River watershed. The Alliance

seeks to achieve this through knowledgeable community participation and an adaptive approach. The Battle River Watershed Alliance represents government (municipal, provincial and federal), environmental organizations, industry, academia and private citizens in a collaborative initiative to plan for the sustainable management of land and water resources in the Battle River watershed.

The contributions of individuals, communities, business groups, and government, nonprofit and voluntary sectors will help build a framework that allows all Albertans the opportunity to participate fully in Alberta’s economy, communities and cultural life. The framework will also provide the foundation to achieve Premier Redford's commitment to eliminate child poverty and reduce overall poverty in Alberta. Albertans can take part in conversations about the social policy framework by writing in the wiki, responding to a blog, or taking the survey on www. socialpolicy.alberta.ca. The site also includes a discussion toolkit that helps individuals to hold a community discussion. The deadline to participate in Speak. Share. Thrive. is July 31. Province adjusts income exemption and thresholds for Alberta Seniors Benefit and adds Chiropractic Services

Low-income Alberta seniors will continue to have access to monthly income support through the Alberta Seniors Benefit (ASB) program. The Alberta government is raising the qualifying income thresholds under the program to ensure provincial seniors’ benefits are not negatively affected by increases to federal seniors’ benefits. Effective July 1, qualifying income increased $500 to $25,100 for a single senior and $800 for senior couples to $40,800. Seniors will be sent a letter in July advising them of their new eligibility for the 2012/13 benefit year. Applications for the ASB program are sent automatically to Albertans three months before they turn 65. In addition to applying for ASB, the application acts as gateway to enrollment for other seniors financial assistance programs such as Dental and Optical Assistance for Seniors, Education Property Tax Assistance for Seniors and Special Needs Assistance for Seniors.

There's a cute little attraction on Mirror Lake You may have noticed a fuzzy little addition to a pair of Trumpeter swans making their summer home on Mirror Lake. The City of Camrose is pleased to announce the arrival of a baby Trumpeter swan – or cygnet, that hatched on or about June 21. It is expected that the parents were sitting on the nest for approximately 32 to 37 days to incubate the eggs. “We have a ‘do not disturb’ philosophy with respect to swan management – we let nature take its course, so we don’t disturb

the nesting process to check. We’re always delighted to have a successful hatch,” says Parks Director, Chris Clarkson. He adds, “The cygnet will grow and change very quickly. Typically young swans can fly in three to four months and reach full maturity in about a year. The swan will turn from grey to white over the course of the first year.” While City residents have a great opportunity to watch the youngster grow, City staff request that you stay a safe distance, well

away from the new family. Swans are very protective of their young. Where can you take a good picture? To keep swans and people safe, feeding is not encouraged to assist picture-taking efforts. Feeding can be very harmful, even fatal, to the swans, particularly the young birds, as swans eat naturally occurring aquatic vegetation, not bread or popcorn! Feeding can also teach the young one some ‘bad habits’ like dependency on human food and lack of fear of humans or traffic, particularly along 48 Ave-

nue. Although our swans are captive, they are also wild and should be respected as wild animals. In 1962 the first swans made their way to Camrose – a pair of graceful Polish Mutes affectionately known as Hal and Faxi, which were donated by the City of Halifax – and made their home on Mirror Lake for many years. Five decades later, Camrose is still very wellknown for its beautiful landscapes, complemented by picturesque swans on local waters.

Council approves tender for roadway construction program By Dan Jensen

A Border Paving tender of $953,281.41 plus GST for the 2012 Roadway Construction program was accepted by Camrose City council June 25. The budget for the 2012 Roadway Construction Paving Program was estimated at $1,200,000. "We were very pleased with the tenders that came in," said City of Camrose infrastructure services director Mark Barrett. "The upward pressure on the prices seems to have levelled off."

Councillor Gerry Galenza said he was happy to see the work go to a local company. "They employ lots of local workers and are good corporate people." Council also gave first reading to an Augustana Area Redevelopment Plan that will create a long term vision for the neighbourhood north of the Augustana campus. Second and third readings are scheduled to be given July 23 after a public hearing. The Augustana Area Redevelopment Plan is consistent

with the City's planning policies, strategic priorities and Municipal Sustainability Plan. Council approved a recommendation to increase the City of Camrose sponsorship for the Canadian Bull Congress next January from $2,000 to $2,500. Councillor Gerry Galenza told council that the sponsorship is a chance for the City of Camrose to blow its own horn and perhaps attract future residents and investors. "There are 8,500 people who attend the congress every year, some of whom have deep

pockets and may want to live here." Councillor Max Lindstrand said it is time that council had a philosophical discussion about how it feels about sponsorships and how many events it is going to sponsor. "It seems to me that we are getting an increasing number of requests, and that our response to them has been knee-jerk." "An argument could be made that they should be paying their own way." A report by chief build-

ing inspector Doug Delmage showed that the City of Camrose issued building permits having a total value of $3,294,520 during the month of May, up from $3,113,000 in May of 2011. The total value of building permits after the first five months of this year was $13,146,101. The total value of building permits after the first five months of 2011 was $11,076,331. The number of single fixed dwelling units completed to the end of May was 31.

Signe Spokkeli Hills will be honoured at Founders Days By Janine Carroll with information from A Light Into the Past and the Feb. 26, 1980, issue of The Camrose Booster

Signe Spokkeli Hills will be honoured as a founder at this year's Camrose Founders Days celebration. Signe Spokkeli Hills was born January 20, 1886, on a farm near Moorhead, Minnesota, the only child of Norwegian settlers, John and Juri Spokkeli. The family moved to the Camrose area in 1895 when Signe was nine years old and settled on a homestead. As a child Signe fondly remembers the wild fruit that grew abundantly on the prairie and her positive pioneer neighbors, full of optimism and plans. She wandered the open prairie with her friend Grace Hills (who would someday become her sister-in-law). She was also expected, as any pioneer child to complete many chores around the house and farm. The village of Sparling (later to become Camrose) was nothing more than prairie land when the Spokkelis arrived in the area, owned by Ole Bakken. He had been told by a fortune teller that his land would be home to a city someday. The Spokkeli family was convinced to come to the Northwest Territories by Signe’s uncle Peter Skafse, who she described as a “roaming character”. When nineyear-old Signe arrived in Wetaskiwin with her mother, the town was little more than a few stores with a railway running through. She does recall the excitement that the train arrival had on the community, with people running out of their homes to watch. Her uncle picked them up in a lumber wagon pulled by horses to take them to their homestead. Before a school was built, settlers in the area of the hamlet of

At age 19, Signe's first teaching assignment was just north of Camrose at Lake Demay. She used wrapping paper in place of a blackboard.

Stoney Creek chipped in to hire Mr. Eurastus Taylor, a bachelor from Quebec, to teach neighborhood children lessons held in his “shack”. Because Signe lived too far away to walk, she boarded with family living closer. Their home had a sod roof and Signe recalled that when it rained the only dry place in that house was under the table with two of family boys sitting on top holding an umbrella. Once built, Signe attended the Stoney Creek schoolhouse, located about five miles south of what would later become downtown Camrose. As more people settled the area, this school was replaced by a larger building and

renamed New Salem School. Signe remembers noisy slate pencils and the large wood stove. She also remembered a hail storm that broke all the windows in the school. Church gatherings and schoolyard picnics were the main social events during the early years of settlement. Community dances were attended by families. She recalls younger children were put to sleep in nearby straw as the evenings got late. People made do with what they had. As a child Signe played with a block of wood wrapped in a small blanket, and was delighted when she was given her first doll, even though it was homemade, nam-

ing it “Lumpen.” She recalled that people often lived on a menu of tea, bread and boiled rabbit. Mail came on horseback and was left at the general store. People would sort through it to see if there was anything for them. Clothes were ordered from the Eaton’s catalogue and often produce was traded at the general store for goods. Or the produce was replaced with tokens because there was a shortage of coin in western Canada. During the years of 1902 and 1903 Signe boarded in Edmonton to attend high school. To get to her boarding residence, she travelled to Wetaskiwin by horse, to South Edmonton by train and

from there she would have to cross the North Saskatchewan River by ferry. After completing high school, she went to Regina to attend the Normal School, earning her interim teacher's certificate in three months. At age nineteen, Signe’s first teaching assignment was just north of Camrose at Lake Demay. She used wrapping paper in place of a blackboard. At that time not all children were able to attend school regularly as they were also needed to help on the farm. Signe recalls a boy who was so exhausted from his chores that he slept through entire lessons. She also taught at New Salem School and the Sifton rural school. In 1905 Signe was hired to teach at the first school in Camrose, held in a small wooden building on Main Street; she had 19 students. Signe’s teaching career came to an end in 1907 when she married Irving Hills. Irving Hills was also an acclaimed pioneer of the Camrose community. He owned the first drug store in Camrose, opening it in 1906 and operating it until his death in 1951. Together he and Signe had two children, Myrtle and John. When Signe moved to this area in 1895, the land where Camrose would develop was owned by Ole Bakken. It was wide open prairie with a few scattered homesteads and plenty of wild fruit. Signe died in August 1988 at the age of 102 years, a Camrose resident for those many years. By that time the population of Camrose exceeded 12,000 people – imagine the changes she saw. She is remembered and honored by the 2012 Founders Days Committee as the first Camrose School teacher, but is also one of our longest living pioneers.

The early days of municipal government in Camrose Excerpt from a story by Frank Perley Layton in a souvenir book published by Camrose Historical Society to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Camrose Municipal Organizations Municipal organization began in May, 1905, when citizens of Sparling hamlet made application to the government of the North West Territories at Regina (autonomy not having been granted to the Province of Alberta until the fall of 1905) for incorporation as a village. Application was granted and F.P. Layton was appointed returning officer for the election of a village overseer, this being the only executive office under The Village Act of that time. R.O. Declares Himself Elected Overseer Nomination for overseer was held in Lars Larson’s hall at 7:00 p.m. An hour was allowed to receive nominations. An amusing incident then occurred. The name of the returning officer was the only one placed in nomination for the position and so, after waiting the prescribed time, he declared himself elected by a very large majority. Modern Main Street The Village Act then permitted the overseer to borrow

The Camrose town office at Camrose and District Centennial Museum.

on the credit of the village a sum not exceeding $100.00 without a vote of the ratepayers. This amount was borrowed the very next morning from the Merchants Bank and public works began by plowing deep furrows on each side of Main Street to carry off the slough water from the townsite and into Stoney Creek. Name changed to Camrose By the time of the first elec-

tion of a Town Council, the Village of Sparling had four overseers in turn as follows: Frank P. Layton, Francois Adam, Duncan Sampson and Thomas Dahl. The name of Sparling became so frequently confused with that of Sperling in Manitoba and Stirling in Alberta that the name was changed to Camrose, and on January 16, 1907, the village was raised

to the dignity and status of a town. The First Town Council At the first town election, R. D. Fleming was returning officer. Thomas Dahl was elected mayor by acclamation. The following were elected to the first town council: Abraham Code, Real Estate Agent; George P. Smith, Merchant; R.B. Price, Merchant; Dennis Twomey, Hardware; Albert Foucar, Tinsmith; and Edward R. Hjelm, Butcher. During the summer, Messrs. Foucar and Hjelm resigned, and their places were filled by the election by acclamation of Frank L. Farley, Real Estate Agent, and Jabez Harris, Creamery Operator. Munificent Salaries At the first meeting of the town council, R.D. Fleming was appointed secretary-treasurer at a salary of ten dollars per month. Some of the first appointments made by the first town council were as follows: Dr. W.V. Lamb, Medical Officer of Health (salary $65 per year); Frank P. Layton, Auditor (salary $50 per year); George Keeble, Assessor (salary $25 per year); Charles E. Asp, Town Constable (salary

$50 per month); George E. Hallet, Night Watchman (salary $35 per month); Sidney Lambert, Bell Ringer (salary $5 per month); and Tom B. Olson, Pound Keeper. Town Fire Hall, Fire Brigade In March, 1907, a contract was let to Henry Nelson of Wetaskiwin for the erection of a town fire hall on Lots 1 and 2, Blk. 6. A contract was let to William Bonnyman for the underground water tanks for fire protection purposes. These were placed, one near the C.P.R. station, one at the fire hall and one on Government Road, one block east of Main Street. With the purchase of a Waterous gasoline fire engine in 1907, a volunteer fire brigade was formed with F.P. Layton, chief; Thomas C. Battram, engineer; Dr. W.V. Lamb, captain in charge of the ladder truck, and “Tiny” Barnwell, captain of the hose reel. In June, 1907, the Fair Grounds property was purchased from W.J. McNamara for $4,000. This purchase was financed by a bank loan secured by a note signed by several of the business men about town.

BRSD board holds final meeting of year Diane Hutchinson, Communications Officer, BRSD

Just as staff and students of local schools were looking forward to a summer break, the Board of Trustees of Battle River School Division held its final meeting of the 2011-2012 school year on June 28. Wind Power

The Board of Trustees voted in favour of a recommendation to pursue a project, along with other members of the Alberta Schools Commodity Purchasing Consortium, for purchasing wind power as a source of electricity. This shift to green energy would take place beginning in 2014. “It’s exciting to be looking into the prospect of green power,” said Board Chair Cheryl Smith. “School divisions are charged with preparing students for the future. What better way than to lead by example through researching and perhaps purchasing alternative sources of energy.” Satisfaction Surveys

Board members reviewed results from the most current satisfaction surveys, completed by students, parents and staff earlier this spring. According to Assistant Superintendent Rick Jarrett, student responses on the surveys reflect a significant level of satisfaction with their schools and their learning. Teachers also feel positive about their instructional practice. Parent responses were more positive this year than in previous years in 33 of the 36 survey categories although Mr. Jarrett acknowledged that, now that the survey is only conducted online, parent input has decreased and the school division will be challenged in the future to build up the number of parent responses. As the school division has faced significant changes in its staffing over the last few years, some categories of the survey indicated a dis-satisfaction by parents and teachers with their ability to influence division-wide decisions. New Administrative Procedure

The Board heard from Superintendent of Schools Dr.

Larry Payne about the newly created Administrative Procedure 569, which governs sales calls and demonstrations in schools. The Administrative Procedure limits outside organizations visiting schools for the purpose of selling or promoting merchandise, services, or ideologies to students. This new procedure will lead to various changes in practice, including eliminating distribution of bibles to students. Development of this procedure followed an extensive review of practices in other school divisions and around the country, as well as input from legal advisors. Enrollment Projections and Staffing

Student enrollment projections for the upcoming school year continue to be down in all areas of Battle River School Division, as a result of more students finishing high school than are starting grade one. Enrollments have declined steadily in the last 17 years, just as overall populations have decreased in many rural communities. With funding for school divisions based on student enrollment, each decrease in student numbers results in lower funding. As a result, BRSD will once again have fewer teachers and support staff in the coming school year. Through attrition and strategic, division-wide planning, BRSD will be reducing the total number of teaching staff, but will not be required to terminate the contract of any member of the permanent teaching staff. However, the hours and number of school support staff, such as educational assistants, librarians and administrative assistants, will be impacted.

Community Input

In the upcoming school year, the BRSD Board of Trustees will be hosting a number of input sessions on the topic of balancing the amount of school spaces available in BRSD with the number of students. The trustees are very interested in hearing the perspective of parents and community members on the possibilities for realigning BRSD in preparation for the future.

GMC Sierra Fuel efficient performer

Pete Pastuck McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet By Dan Jensen

The 2012 GMC Sierra at McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet delivers the kind of fuel economy and performance you wouldn't normally expect from a pickup. New technologies like active fuel management and variable valve timing allow Sierras to get the most out of a tank of gas. The 5.3 litre Flex Fuel V-8, for example, uses just 10.69 litres per 100 km while producing 315 horsepower and 335 lb.-ft of torque. "Active fuel management technology increases fuel economy approximately six per cent and potentially more in certain real-world driving situations," states a GM press release. "AFM temporarily deactivates four of the engine's cylinders under light road conditions and seamlessly reactivates them when full power is required. The transition takes less than 20 milliseconds and is virtually indiscernable." The 6.2 litre V-8 on Sierra Denali with six-speed automatic transmission is rated at 403 horsepower and 417 lb.-ft. of torque. An Autotrac electronic transfer case is standard on SLE and SLT with four-wheel-drive. Chassis and suspension Sierra's wide front and rear tracks enhance handling and vehicle stability for a more confident road feel. The stiffer frame reduces vibrations transmitted to the passenger cabin, while the strength and accuracy of the fully-boxed frame enable precise mounting and tuning of chassis and suspension components. Something for everyone Sierra trucks are available in three cab styles – regular, extended and crew cab – and three cargo box lengths – short, standard and long. A Denali-specific chrome grille, along with chrome trim and body-colour bumpers makes the truck instantly recognizable. Large grab-style door handles are designed for easy use with work globes and reinforce the notion that this is a truck first and foremost. An All Terrain package includes 18-inch chrome-

clad aluminum wheels and on/off road tires, Z71 suspension package, fog lamps, body-colour outside mirrors and door handles, "All Terrain" identification on the exterior, sill plates and floor mats, and Rancho front and rear shocks. Exterior colour choices include Onyx Black, Midnight Blue Metallic, Mocha Steel Metallic, Stealth Grey Metallic, Steel Grey Metallic, Carbon Black Metallic and White Diamond Clearcoat. Two interiors Sierra features two interiors to meet the diverse needs of customers. The Work Truck, SL and SLE trim levels feature the "pure pickup" interior, while Denali and SLT models feature the luxury inspired interior similar to GMC's full-size SUVs. Work Truck, SL and SLE trim levels feature larger controls. A large capacity double globe box is part of the instrument panel.

A stadium-style rear seat with a 60/40-split design and folding centre armrest is standard on crew cab models and available on extended cab models. It can be folded up with one hand, without using a release handle, to provide an uninterrupted load floor. Alternatively, either section of the split seat can be stowed independently, allowing room for both cargo and rearseat passenger. Rear access doors open 170 degrees for easy entry to the rear seat/storage area of extended cab models. Power-operated rear side windows lower completely into the 170-degree access doors, providing 100 per cent openness on SLE and SLT models. Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard on Denali and SLT and available on SLE and XFE; single-zone manual air conditioning is standard on Work Truck, SL, SLE and XFE. A Driver Information Centre is available on all models. Front bucket seats with 12-way power driver and passenger seat adjusters are standard on Denali. An available sunroof retracts above the roof on the extended cab and inside the roof on crew cab models. Safety features Sierra provides standard head curtain side air bags with rollover protection for all seating rows. The available rearview camera system (standard on Denali) is designed to provide the driver with a view of people or objects in the rearward path of the vehicle. The standard high-capacity brake system with four-channel ABS provides smooth, quiet operation, longer pad life, and more resistance to brake pulsation. OnStar uses GPS and cellular phone technology to automatically call for help in the event of a crash. OnStar subscribers also can use the service to be Good Samaritans by sending help to other motorists and to call for help in other non-crash emergencies.

Visual Brake Check: Battery Fluids Air Filter Coolant level and strength Lights, hoses, belts and more… Battle River Community Foundation director Wayne Throndson presents a cheque for $1,621 to City of Camrose parks director Chris Clarkson.

The Battle River Community Foundation has granted $1,621 to City of Camrose parks projects. The grant is funded by the Paul and Millicent Bethge Endowment Fund, which was created to support the many parks in the city of Camrose. Paul and Millicent Bethge were lifelong farmers who appreciated their rural roots. They moved to Camrose from Amisk in the late 1990s to retire from farming. In Camrose, Millicent was known for her activity in the church and her home baking. She loved to have people over for coffee and baked treats. Paul, a World War II veteran and dedicated farmer, loved his garden and growing flowers. Friends and neighbours marvelled at how beautiful Paul kept his yard, and he prided himself on his roses. With this background it only seems appropriate that the income from the Paul and Millicent Bethge Fund be used to support the parks and green spaces in Camrose. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects in east central Alberta which benefit local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Contributions to the Battle River Community Foundation are permanently invested in endowment funds, currently valued in excess of $6.5 million. The principal remains untouched and the income is made available by generous donors who make annual gifts to the Battle River Community Foundation.

PHOTO CLASSIFIED ADS

A picture is worth 1,000 words!

For Want Ad service, please phone 780-672-3142 before six on Friday Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Tackling drought and water quality issues Sarah Skinner, BRWA Watershed Planning Coordinator Your Land, Your Water, Your Voice What we heard from you about the place you live

As summer arrives, all of us here at the Battle River Watershed Alliance (BRWA) are reflecting on the amazing opportunity we had this past year to travel across east-central Alberta and talk with the wonderful people who live here. Through a series of workshops, you told us what you appreciate about this place, what you see as the critical challenges facing us, and your hopes for the future. Learn more about what we heard at these workshops in our "What We Heard" report, which is now available on our website! Visit us at www.battleriverwatershed.ca. Taking Care of our Land and Water Watershed management in ;east-central Alberta

In 2011, the BRWA released Our Battle: State of the Battle River and Sounding Creek Watersheds Report 2011. An online version of the report is available on our website. This report provides a snapshot of the current ecological, social and economic health of our watersheds; it also acts as a catalyst to start talking about what we want our watersheds to look like and what actions we need to take to get there. This year marks the beginning of the BRWA’s watershed management planning process, which is all about developing management recommendations that lead to tangible actions that support the ecological, social and economic sustainability of our watersheds. Visit our website to read the Terms of Reference that will guide this process. Here’s what we’ll be working on over the coming year: Working to Improve Water Quality

Coming up with collective solutions to water quality issues. Over the coming year, one of the key components of our watershed that we want to focus on is water quality. In particular, we want to get a handle on high nutrient levels in our rivers, streams, lakes and wetlands. This year we’ll be focusing our attention on nutrients and other pollutants coming from “nonpoint” sources; this includes pollution entering our water bodies and waterways through storm water runoff from our communities and surface water runoff from the countryside. We want to learn more about the good work that is already being done and work together to come up with solutions to improve water quality and nutrient management in our watersheds. We’ll be hosting a number of workshops in 2012/13 to talk with you about what collective actions are possible. The first round of workshops will take place in September. Stay tuned for more information about workshops near you! Planning For Extremes

Developing strategies to thrive in times of water shortage and drought In 2011, the BRWA began work on policy research related to issues of drought and water shortages in the Battle River and Sounding Creek watersheds. This coming year, work will continue with the development of policy recommendations and implementation guidelines for drought management in our watersheds. Over the next year, we will be hosting a number of workshops to have conversations with you about drought policy recommendations and implementation guidelines that you would like to see put in place. The first round of workshops will take place in August. Stay tuned for dates and times for a workshop near you!

Solar panels an interesting topic for discussion By Stacey Rempel, CWSS coordinator

At the Alternative Energy talk, presented by the Camrose Wildlife and Stewardship Society on June 26, Brian Nelson and Nathan Stanley both spoke about their experiences using solar power. Brian talked about how he retrofitted his house to tap into passive solar power. Passive solar power is the use of solar energy to heat your house without using panels or special equipment. What Brian did was basically build walls on the outside of his house into which he put a lot of insulation, a vapor barrier and then sealed them as much as he

could. By double insulating his house and sealing it as air tight as possible, the heat stays in his house in winter and the heat stays out of his house in summer. He also placed large windows on the south side of his house with a deck covering them so that in the summer they are shaded whereas in the winter the sun comes right in. About a third of the heat for his house comes from the sun, a third from supplemental heating (fireplace or high efficiency furnace) and a third from living in the house (people, lights, computer, etc.) Brian estimated that in the 29 years that he has had a passive solar power house he has saved about $65,000.

Nathan talked about how he and his family live completely off the power grid; they are still connected to gas, but all of their electricity is powered by solar panels. They built their house themselves and installed all the solar equipment themselves as well. The only stipulation Nathan’s family made when they were about to start building their new house was that they did not want to change their lifestyle (being able to do laundry, have a fridge, watch television, etc.). They have 12 solar panels, a battery array to store the power, two back-up fireplaces, and a backup generator that is connected to the gas line.
