Sawchyn ready to help young mothers again By Murray Green

Despite hot temperatures, retired Camrose ultra sound technician Jim Sawchyn wants to go back to El Salvador next summer. He joined the Flying Doctors of Canada and was given an ultra sound machine that was left in El Salvador. "There was a team of eight doctors, five professionals, three dentists and 18 university students. In all, we were a crew of about 48 people and we had six clinics in six days," explained Jim, who was gone for 10 days in July. "We saw about 1,500 patients and it was very busy. It was also an amazing experience." Jim has already circled July 8 on his calendar for next year. "The need is very big, so I'm going again. I was very happy to be a part of the team and they want me to come back," said Jim. "I want to thank all of the people who supported me in Camrose, because the support was overwhelming. I was able to cover all of my expenses and I have a couple of bucks left for my next trip." His skills are in high demand and travelling may be in the works sooner than he had

first planned. "The Flying Doctors are going to Haiti in February and they have asked me to go along with them," added Jim. "It will be the same type of clinics, but there will be no students because they will be in classes at that time of the year. It is bound to be a shorter stay." The group will consist of doctors, nurses, lab techs and x-ray techs. "In El Salvador, we had a bus assigned to us for the whole duration of our trip. We started with a 7 a.m. wake-up call at the motel, had breakfast and then onto the bus. All of the equipment was loaded on the back of the bus and we went to the site," said Jim as he explained a typical day. "We unloaded the bus and set up. Sometimes we were under a tree and other times we were at a school and we adjusted accordingly. We were joined by doctors, assistants from El Salvador and interpreters. This was a preplanned clinic, so the patients were given information sheets and only 260 patients could see us each day. They all lined up according to who they were going to see and it was well organized."

Jim went on to say they packed up by 6 p.m. and then had supper. "Then we cooled off with a shower and relaxed to prepare for the next day. We took one full day off to go to the volcano and another to go to the ocean." The group was 150 kilometres inland from the capital of San Salvador towards the middle of the country. "Izalco was the name of the county area. The population is unbelievable. Even along the highways, the population is about 800 people per square mile. When I go back, we will be in the same general area, but we will be in different villages." Jim said the population is high and the water quality is poor. "Doctors had to consider if they were going to use the bathrooms, or not. The conditions in the village areas are very bad," explained Jim. "But, they are the happiest people I have every seen. They don't live like we do here. Everything they own can fit into a box." He pointed out that everyone there sold something. They would line up along the highway and sell whatever they could. Everything from fruit to

Jim said a few patients would show up without information sheets and they would be squeezed in when possible. "By the time we set up, we started work at 9:30 a.m. and worked until noon. The meal was provided by the village for lunch and sometimes we ate around the chickens and other animals. I will say the meals were interesting. One time, I was so busy that I ate my lunch with a patient still on the table." Jim reported that it was very hot. "The day started at about 25°C and by the time we were done, it was around 40°C. You perspired continuously. At about 5 p.m. we were done and everything was hauled back onto the bus. That is where the university students came in. They packed everything up for us. Most of them were in pre-medicine, so they were helpful to the doctors during the day as well. In fact, some of the dental students were helping pull teeth. It was hands-on experience." Most of the students were from Alberta. "The founder of this group went to the University of Lethbridge, so he likes to have students from Alberta."

handicrafts. "They make their money any way they could. A bottle of water that costs $1.25 here was 40 cents there. The food was cheaper but the wages are less. In a grocery store similar to Sobey's, they sold meats, but it was a poor seller because not very many people could afford to buy it," said Jim. The ultra sound technician received help from local people, university students and interpreters. "We had armed guards at the clinic, but we didn't see any conflicts. The children were happy to have a stick to play with. Some of the people brought soccer balls and skipping ropes and the children were all over them." Jim said it was a worthwhile experience. "One time I went to a lady's house. They just wanted medical help and to be your friend. I'm so appreciative of this community that helped me experience what it is like to help others in need. I really want to do this again." Jim had to supply the gel and other supplies that were needed to operate the machine because the villages didn't have any of the items.

Bailey Theatre Society needs miracle By Dan Jensen

The Bailey Theatre Society is looking for a miracle. Bailey Theatre Society vice president Bill Walker told Camrose city council last week that the Society may have to close the theatre's doors this December if its current financial situation does not improve. Walker said the Bailey Theatre Society bank balance, which stood at $158,977 at the start of August is slowly being eroded by debt repayments and interest on the long-term debt of $600,000. "We are losing $23,000 a month. "We need a banker right now to help us over the hump until our fund-raising can get going." The Bailey Theatre Society has developed a marketing plan and promotional kit that can be handed out to potential supporters, and is currently searching for a full-time fund-raising professional. "The fund-raising is getting very serious attention," said interim fund-raiser Verina Staven. "There are a lot of currents under the water." Walker said if the Bailey Theatre Society ever committed a sin it is the failure to have a fundraiser in place from the start. "The delay is costing us tons. "Every $25,000 gives us a month of life." While the Bailey Theatre Society has had 80 per cent occupancy, the revenue that has been generated from the events has not been as high as had been hoped. "It takes a while for people to create a routine where they are looking for something in the arts to attend," said Bailey Theatre Society president Judy McLean. "It is a little frustrating that there are not more people coming out because we would be making more money if there were." Councillor Daryl Shillington said City council needs to sit down and talk about what it can do to help the Bailey Theatre Society with its operating deficit, which could

The historic Bailey Theatre in downtown Camrose.

reach as high as $250,000 for 2012-13. "This is a crown jewel of the community and with the performing arts centre will make a great tandem punch." "I see the value in it for a lot of reasons." Deputy mayor Gerry Galenza noted that the City contributions to the Bailey Theatre came with the stipulation that no operational funding would be attached. He added that the City of Camrose even received a letter from former Bailey Theatre Society chair Dan Olofson in 2010 stating that the Society fully intends to operate the theatre without relying on the City for operational funds. Councillor Max Lindstrand said he would have been surprised if the Bailey Theatre hadn't come back to council with a request for operating funds.

"I don't see these kinds of facilities operating in the black. They need some assistance. That might not be a popular thing with other council members, but to me it is realistic to think that a facility like this is going to need support. There is still going to be a blow at the end of the day and I am certainly prepared to look at that." Councillor John Howard wished the Society luck with its efforts to obtain funding for the provincial government with reducing its bank loan, but noted that it is going to have a hard time with receiving money from any level of government for operating. "That is the hardest money of all to get and fund-raising is the key." Howard also encouraged the Bailey Theatre Society to get started with the fund-raising as soon as it can. "One report says that almost

$1.2 million has been raised already for the performing arts centre, so there is come competition out there." Councillor Wood encouraged the Bailey Theatre Society to approach the Performing Arts Centre board of governors to look at ways that both theatres can share costs. "The operation of both venues in good cooperation is vital," said Wood. The Bailey Theatre was restored at a total cost of more than $8 million, with funding from the City of Camrose, the federal and provincial governments, and several communityminded donors. The theatre's bistro operation has been discontinued, except as an extension of theatre events and luncheons, and has been the site of many shows, including the Nordlys Film Festival. "The Bailey is unique and

speaks well of downtown," said McLean. The Bailey Theatre Society has a three-year contract with About Time Productions, and is actively seeking shows that will contribute to the cultural, musical and theatrical tastes of the community. Rose City Roots has already staged two successful shows at the theatre, and has three shows scheduled for this fall. In addition, the Churchmice Players will be performing in the theatre for the first time this December. Stephen Fearing, a Canadian singer, song writer and multiple Juno Award winner described the 100-year-old Bailey as being "ripe with the kind of atmosphere one can only get in an old venue, where musicians, actors and showboats of all shapes and sizes have been treading the boards for over 100 years." The Bailey has grown on Walker, who was originally a proponent of bulldozing it to the ground. "In 2004 I addressed council making a plea for the new performing arts centre," said Walker. "One of the lines I used in my statement was that council should bite the bullet and bulldoze the Bailey. I have now eaten some crow. I am a real convert to the Bailey now because it has everything a performer could want." Augustana dean Dr. Allen Berger, in a letter to Camrose mayor Marshall Chalmers said the Bailey Theatre and CPAC form a complimentary package. "They are very different venues, each with its own strengths. In combination, they offer the possibility of coordinated scheduling. In combination they will create an arts corridor in Camrose with anchors on both the north and south ends of 50 Street. This will richly benefit the many businesses in between. In addition, the Bailey and CPAC will be able to share technical and planning expertise, creating savings for both. Without the Bailey, I am convinced CPAC will become a weaker, not a stronger enterprise."

Philanthropist donates $4.9 million to University of Alberta Calgary philanthropist David Bissett has donated $4.9 million to the University of Alberta to establish the Alberta Land Institute and support research into land use and land use policies, in recognition of the need for more informed decisions in the face of continuous growth in Alberta. “I came to Alberta 30 years ago and since then I’ve seen first hand the changes in the province’s landscape,” said Bissett at the launch of the Institute. “What we need is research and evidence that demonstrates to land users and policy makers how to balance all the competing interests for Alberta’s land base. With its strong research capacity, the University of Alberta is well positioned to provide tan-

gible solutions to address these challenges.” “We are so grateful for this gift,” said University President Indira Samarasekera. “It will allow the Institute to grow into an internationally-recognized leader in the research and development of practical policy options for land use.” “As Alberta’s population grows, our land-use decisions need to consider what is healthy for the economy, the environment and society to ensure Albertans continue to enjoy an excellent quality of life," said Diana McQueen, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Resource Development. "Research from the Alberta Land Institute will help inform the responsible and longterm planning in our province

that ensures vibrant and healthy communities for families to live in." Thanks to this donation, the Institute has already undertaken some significant baseline research, and has been able to establish immediate research priorities for further exploration and the identification of solutions to Alberta’s key land use challenges according to Executive Director, Andre Tremblay. Those priorities include:

• Agriculture - Supporting economic and social viability of agriculture while increasing environmental performance on the land base, including a focus on irrigation. • Municipal Development Supporting more efficient plan-

ning of commercial, industrial and residential infrastructure. • Governance & Regulation - Identifying potential enhancements to the governance and regulatory framework required to increase land stewardship within Alberta and Canada. The Institute will also support a research program on property rights issues arising in Alberta based on current landuse regulations – a topic of considerable discussion in recent months – and host an International Land Use Symposium in Edmonton with land use experts from around the world in late 2013. “I’ve given time, money, energy and land to many land-use groups in the past, now it’s time

for the gift of information at the highest levels of decision-making for all stakeholders,” said Bissett. “The Alberta Land Institute will provide the information in an unbiased way and prompt serious discussions about the kind of province we want to live in, and what tools, policies and strategies we need to get us there.” The Institute will continue to investigate relevant land-use issues that are complex and often controversial. In time, the Institute will also work to fill in research gaps around land use in the areas of energy, recreation, transportation and utilities, and forestry. The Alberta Land Institute will be housed at the University of Alberta’s north campus in Edmonton.

Communication key in succession plans By Dan Jensen

ATB Securities financial advisors Scott Fleischhacker and Hugh Cameron stressed the importance of farmers and business owners developing a succession plan at the September 5 meeting of the Camrose Chamber of Commerce. "You need to start talking to the key people in your business or your family, if you are in a family business or farm," said Fleischhacker. "How do you transfer the ownership of your business and how do you maximize that dollar value at the end of the day?" Fleischhacker said he and Cameron have seen too many family squabbles and bankruptcy claims as a result of there not being a strong succession plan. "You need to sit down and talk about your goals, whether it be financial or keeping the family at peace, and you need to identify who your key people are." Fleischhacker said one big part of succession planning is being able to minimize the amount that is paid in taxes. "Everyone paying tax is a good thing and there is nothing wrong with a tax, but don't pay more than you have to. There are a lot of strategies that can be put in place before you sell (your farm or business) because after you sell there is no stopping or reducing the amount you pay." Fleischhaker advised anyone who is selling a business or farm to consider hiring a business evaluator or broker, even if it means paying a fee. He noted that an evaluator can open the market for the business or farm to all of Alberta rather than just Camrose, and come up with a true and fair sales price. "In some cases it will be val-

ued higher than what you think and in some cases it will be valued lower." Cameron suggested that one of the reasons that people don't do succession planning is that it means giving up control and stepping away from something they have done for a long time. He said there are certain things – like life insurance policies – that can make the transfer of a farm or business fair and equitable – but the people who are involved (in the transfer) need to lay their cards on the table and talk about what needs to happen. "If the business or succession plan is in place, that business is probably going to be transferred in a very good state and all things will be taken care of." Cameron said those who choose to pass the business or farm on to someone other than family (a partner or employee, for example) need to consider whether the potential buyer wants to tie up his or her equity and assume risk. If they are considering a thought of selling to a competitor who is looking to grow and gain market share, he said they need to be aware how the sensitive information that is being shared might come into place if the deal does not finally go through. "There can be some apprehension on the part of the business that is potentially selling to share all that information." Cameron said while banks are usually happy to finance many parts of a business, they have problems with putting a dollar figure on goodwill. "You might have to look at other ways of dealing with that, like going to an alternative lender, or providing the financing yourself. It is a good thing to have the bank involved when you

are thinking about those things down the road." Cameron said it is wise to put key things into a succession plan that will ensure the new owner of the business has an easier time of retaining employees. "If you have been in business for a long time and you have employees who think of you more as friends and family than as someone who works for you, it is going to be a difficult day for them when you decide to leave. That may be when a competitor swoops in and takes that person away from the business, which hurts the value (of the business) and the person who is actually willing to pay for that business. It might be a situation where you say this is what you are planning to do and asking if they (employee) would be interested in a small ownership percentage with the investor." Cameron said in the event of death it is a good idea to have a life insurance plan that will allow the surviving spouse to purchase the shares in the business that the deceased had owned. "The business evaluator is going to give you an idea of how much insurance you would need to cover an eventuality like that." Cameron said the Edmonton Oilers showed successful succession planning when they were winning their Stanley Cup championships. "The teams were different but each one had a plan in place to get them to the Stanley Cup. That is really what we are talking about with a succession plan. A succession plan is building out a plan that focuses on some key areas that allow you to get to your Stanley Cup, to realize the value and unlock the value in that business you worked so hard to create."

Open Door celebrates opening of Keystone Centre By Dan Jensen

The Camrose Open Door Association celebrated the official opening of Keystone Centre at the former Gardner College site Sept. 6. Keystone Centre will provide both emergency housing and transitional shelter to youth who find themselves at risk. "We have had a belief for quite a long time that young people at risk not only need counselling and support but they also need housing," said Camrose Open Door Association board chair Dr. Warren Phillips at the opening. "It has been a long time goal to provide the opportunity for youth to have housing and to provide the kind of stability they need in their lives." The Open Door Association had originally intended to convert the second floor of the Gateway Centre, its primary site, to bedrooms and temporary suites. "We found due to the unique way the building was constructed the cost of doing that was prohibitive," said Dr. Phillips. "All the members of the board and staff were really frustrated and disappointed when we found this door closed and the opportunity didn't exist, but one of the things that people in the Open Door believe is that when one door closes another opens." It wasn't long after receiving the news that the Open Door made contact with the people at Gardner College and found there was an opportunity to make use of the Gardner dorms. "That was successful and allowed us to provide eight beds a night for youth that find themselves at risk," said Dr. Phillips. The partnership went a step further when Gardner decided to sell its buildings. "The natural purchaser of the building was the Open Door Association and we made that purchase just over a year ago," said Dr. Phillips. Camrose Open Door Association executive director Randal Nickel noted the former Gardner College dorm building – renamed Maurer Hall in recognition of the contributions of Dwight and Bonnie Maurer – has seen the most changes since the Association took possession of the buildings in November, 2011. "We have been able to do significant renovations by upgrading the building to provide eight emergency housing beds and four self apartments, self-contained one-bedroom apartments on the lower level, and from my understanding that is a key addition to the supports that are available in Camrose. We have often struggled as an organization providing that next stage for the youth that come to us in crisis. Where do they go after that? I think, unfortunately, what happens is that they cycle back through crisis again. These rooms are brighter and provide a great space for someone to feel at home." The former Gardner College administration building (the main building) has been given paint and flooring upgrades to create an office environment on both floors. "We welcomed the Camrose Adult Learning Council as the first tenant in this building on the upper level this past January," said Nickel. "We are very

The opening of the Keystone Centre was a bittersweet moment for Bonnie Maurer, who was one of the driving forces behind the creation of the Camrose Open Door Association.

excited to work with them and look at ways we can partner in providing support to our clients." Renovations to the main and dorm building were completed with the support of volunteers and donated materials from local organizations, businesses and individuals. Nickel said The Camrose Open Door Association wants to honour, at Keystone Centre, the tradition of Gardner College. "This facility will continue to make a difference to the lives of Camrose residents for many years to come. The one thing that hasn't changed is the tradition of this site providing growth and training opportunities for youth and young adults in our community." The Camrose Open Door received a grant of $345,000 from the federal government to assist with renovations as well as to contract a researcher to assess the needs of local youth who are homeless or at risk of being homeless, develop housing strategies to address those needs.

"I was one who was initially dismayed when I heard Gardner was going to be closing," said Crowfoot Member of Parliament Kevin Sorenson, who attended the celebration to make the grant announcement. "A lot of us recognized that Gardner fulfilled a very important mission and ministry here in Camrose and across western Canada, and we wondered how something good could come out of it closing. Certainly we are here today recognizing that something good has happened. The Open Door folks here provide vital support to people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. You enable them to integrate into society and give them hope for a better life." Sorenson noted that homelessness is a very complex issue, varying from region to region, that requires the cooperation of stakeholders in various levels of government. "As part of the homelessness partnership strategy we support community local priorities. We are helping them find solutions that will work for them in their

locality. The results of this cooperation and commitment are tangible." Sorenson said it is organizations like the Camrose Open Door Association and other volunteer groups that make Camrose a great place to live. "It is an honour to make an announcement like this that is not only good for the Camrose Open Door Association but is good for everyone in need of this type of service." Wetaskiwin-Camrose MLA Verlyn Olson, in a letter read by Dr. Phillips, congratulated the Camrose Open Door Association on what it has done with the Keystone Centre. "Gardner has a long-standing tradition of offering supports and opportunities for growth and learning to young adults. I am very pleased that the Open Door will carry this legacy forward so that Albertans of today and future generations can continue to benefit from this important facility. The Keystone Centre stands as one of the many channels the Open Door utilizes to strengthen our community. The array of services and resources you offer in a stable, comfortable and secure environment help to realize our collective vision for a better Alberta." City councillor Greg Wood stated the new Keystone Centre will be a great addition to the Open Door Association's ongoing work to meet the needs of youth and young adults in the community. "It is exciting to see this facility, Gardner College, with its strong roots in faith and education, will live on to provide and continue to enrich lives of youth in the community." Wood commended the Camrose Open Door Association and its board for the foresight it has shown with the Keystone Centre and the Gateway Centre, as well as for their continued efforts to partner with other agencies in the community that provide services. "It helps to share space and costs. Without those efforts everybody would struggle that much more." The opening of the Keystone

Centre was bittersweet for Bonnie Maurer, one of the driving forces behind the creation of the Camrose Open Door Association. "It's hard to see realization of the dreams of one (Open Door Association) and the collapse of the dreams of another (Gardner College, which was started by the Church of God to provide education and leadership opportunities for young people)," said Maurer. "There are students who have come out of Gardner who have done their practicums at the Open Door." Maurer said she is proud of the work the Camrose Open Door has done in its brief existence. "We have realized lots of successes with the very limited resources we have had in the past to really create stable environments. We have watched as kids have grown up. After this many years we can look back in the community and we can see them working in health services, in education, at the mills, in the restaurants, in the super stores and wherever. It is gratifying to see that people have been able to be raised up and built up with the confidence that they can move on and success in those things that are taken for granted by all of us." Maurer said she chose the name Keystone for the reason that it defines something on which associated things depend. "It is the basis for principle and the foundations, but for me it also has a spiritual connection because I believe my God is key to everything in life." Over the past two years the Camrose Open Door Association has provided over 2,000 nights of housing to over sixty youth and young adults. "Homelessness is largely hidden in our community," said Dr. Phillips. "When I first arrived I saw Camrose as a prosperous middle class community immune to situations like that and I was shocked to find that on any given night we provide housing to at least five young people and often eight and more. It really is a serious problem and it is through the efforts of a multitude of organizations that we are able to make a dent in that."

Camrose and Rural Areas

Social knowledge and competence Submitted

The provincial Early Childhood Development (ECD) Mapping Initiative included assessments of the readiness of young children currently entering kindergarten in five categories including social knowledge and competence. According to the results, 22.45% of Camrose and Area kindergarten children are experiencing difficulty or great difficulty in the Social Knowledge and Competence category. Social Knowledge and Competence generally refers to respect for adult authority, ability to control own behaviour, ability to play and get along with others, as well as their curiosity and eagerness to explore. By practicing these skills prior to a child’s entry into kindergarten, families may avoid some common challenges. For many children, until they begin kindergarten the only authority figures to whom they may be truly accountable to are Mom and Dad (or other caregivers). Once they begin kindergarten, this changes; there may be multiple people enforcing rules and consequences. By teaching your child how to respect the authority of any adult (within

reason) you will be preparing them for an easier transition to a classroom community. There are many negative consequences for children who are unable to control their own behaviour in a kindergarten setting. Children who continually express anger and frustration by hitting or yelling may have a difficult time making their needs understood. They may also socially isolate themselves. Understanding how to control their behaviour plays a key role in making friends. Parents often talk about the child rather than identifying specific behaviours. When experiencing behaviours (both wanted and unwanted) focus on talking about the behaviour. By identifying the specific behaviour children will become more aware of their behaviours and be better able to identify them on their own. Group and independent work time is increased as children progress through kindergarten and they need to be able to work on their own without constant redirection. As well, in kindergarten children will be expected to share materials, toys and attention. Building cooperative play skills in your child prior

to entering kindergarten will help him or her build positive relationships with classmates. One of the most common problems that arise as the new school year begins is separation anxiety. Stepping into a new environment while leaving caregivers behind can place an enormous amount of stress on a child. This anxiety is less prominent in children who have a keen sense of curiosity. Fostering a child’s curiosity and willingness to explore new environments can be done by arranging play dates and outings wherein you are supervising but not constantly focusing on your toddler's needs and wants. The Camrose Family Resource Centre offers many programs and opportunities for young children to engage in play activities that are similar to what will be found in kindergarten. Participating in activities and programs that challenge children to build social competency skills will set them on the right path towards being successful in kindergarten. For a list and schedule of all programs offered please visit the website at www.camrosefrc.com or call 780-672-0141.

PEN POINTS by Berdie Fowler

Intergenerational learning Sunday, Sept. 9, was National Grandparents Day and Monday, Sept. 10, was Family Literacy Day. I don’t know if it was intentional that these two days be so close together but it is certainly appropriate. It is appropriate because of the two-way exchanges that can and do occur between grandparents and grandchildren. Grandparents can be of immeasurable help in developing the literacy skills of grandchildren while older grandchildren can assist grandparents (and great-grandparents, too) in developing the skills to use computers and an everincreasing variety of other technically advanced devices. National Grandparents Day was designated with the objective of honouring grandparents and giving them the opportunity to show love to their grandchildren; it was also to help children become aware of the information and guidance older people can offer. I saw an example of that last week when I overheard a grandmother arrange to have regular reading sessions with one of her grandchildren who seemed to be equally excited with the plan. There are many grandmothers and grandfathers, and some great-grandparents, too, who do the same. Grandparents do it because they know the inestimable value of education; they know that lack of it usually results in poverty, associated illness and unfulfilled expectations. They are also aware that students who are not reading at grade level by grades two or three are most likely to continue to drop further and further behind and are least likely to finish high school or go on to further training. Studies show that literacy learning begins in the home long before children start school. Reading and telling stories to toddlers as young as 18 months stimulates brain development. So does singing, playing games and doing all kinds of other activities together that require reading, calculating and even learning to listen. Research also shows that shorter and more frequent reading together events are more effective than longer sessions; as little as 15 minutes a day makes a big difference. As grandchildren grow older so, too, do grandparents and great-grandparents who also become less mobile. It is then that the tutorial roles can often be reversed with grandchildren helping their elders keep in touch with the changing world. Together they might do internet research on family ancestry and compile a family history and/or play games and share other activities that keep the older brains active and stimulated. Statistics Canada tells us that there are approximately six million grandparents in Canada, each with an average of five grandchildren. When that many persons from three or four generations spend time together and exchange information, a lot of learning occurs and the two-way benefits for all are great. A number of studies conclude that early intervention in developing literacy skills in children returns benefits valued at over $7 for every $1 invested. Research by the National Center for Family Literacy found that families who attended family literacy programs “reduced participants’ full dependence on public assistance from 67% to 11%.” Praise to those who seriously and deliberately engage in two-way intergenerational learning experiences! The results are making a better world.

CARDINALS VICTORIOUS The Camrose Cardinals Special Olympics softball team played four games in St. Paul on August 25 and 26 to wrap up the season. The athletes had a lot of fun and had the opportunity to play the game they love. They reacquainted with old friends and made some new ones. Thirteen teams, some as far away as Calgary and Regina, attended the 26th annual Conrad Jean Slo-Pitch Tournament. Camrose won two games and came home with 14 happy and proud athletes.

He is a recording artist and has a passion for the people of Japan and empathy for the tragedy they experienced as a result of the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami in eastern Japan. Immediately following the disaster, Makoto set out to help those affected. He did this using his talents as a professional entertainer. He went to the region most devastated, many of his fellow Japanese had lost family members, homes, businesses and indeed their lives would never ever be the same again. Makoto set out to encourage the people and performed many concerts to instill hope and support in the wake of the great tragedy. Makoto travelled across Japan most of last year, conducting gratis concerts filled with love and compassion for his people. Roots society has a full season planned with a variety of music By Murray Green

Get your roots on. It's time for another season of great music with the Rose City Roots Music Society. "We have a pretty diverse line-up this year. There is something for everyone," said Geraint Osborne of the society. "We have roots, folk, rock, electronic, African beat, reggae and country, so we feel there is music for everyone to enjoy." Rose City Roots Music Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the arts and culture by bringing exciting live-music to downtown Camrose, which started in 2006. "We have a soft spot for Alberta and Canadian acts, but we also want to bring in a good variety to provide a culture component," Geraint said. "We are looking for acts that are on the cusp of greatness. The Sheep Dogs are a perfect example of that." Since 2006, Rose City Roots has showcased more than 50 artists from across Canada, playing a range of “roots” music, including folk, alternative folk, roots rock, roots blues and roots country. Performers have played in a variety of venues, most recently in Scalliwags Pub and Rum Bar and the newly renovated Bailey Theatre, situated in historic downtown. "We like the cosy atmosphere of Scalliwags, but we are having three shows at the Bailey to allow more people to hear some special performances. Matt Anderson is coming and we are really excited to have him. He has an energetic show and he has been on CBC.

The Oysterband is coming back. We had them at Scalliwags before and this time they will be at the Bailey. They were sold out well in advance and people were coming from as far away as California to hear them in a smaller venue. We needed a larger venue this time. The other act to play at the Bailey will be Alpha Yaya Diallo West African Summit and it will be a Sunday evening treat to hear the Afro-beat." Rose City Roots has also collaborated with local community organizations, such as Augustana Campus, the Augustana Students’ Association, the Augustana Bike Share, the Open Door, Untapped Alberta and the Camrose Food Bank. Visit web site www.rosecityroots.ca/ for more information. "We don't bring in a lot of country acts because we have the Big Valley Jamboree. However, we couldn't pass up having Jimmy Rankin," added Geraint. "When he performed at Big Valley Jamaboree he was part of the Rankin Family Band. He has gone on with a successful solo career as well and we are looking forward to hearing him." The Roots Society has to perform a balancing act of their own in booking bands. "Our intimate shows at Scalliwags are still our bread and butter. But, sometimes we need the Bailey for bigger draws and sometimes you come across a band that you want to bring to Camrose, that doesn't want to play in a pub atmosphere for whatever reason. We don't plan this many shows for the Bailey and this many for Scalliwags.

It often depends who is coming through the area and how popular they are at the time." The board members make suggestions of who they would like to see and then some of them go and listen to the bands. "We are starting to get a lot attention from booking agents. If they are on tour through the area, often they want a stop between Edmonton and Calgary during the week. The artists really enjoy the smaller venue. It is good to have a variety of music to attract different people to the shows. We also get requests from the crowd, such as Little Miss Higgins and the Good Lovelies." Lisa Alain, Bill Anderson, Brent Fordham, Cindy McKay, Jeremy Mouat, Geraint Osborne, and Lynda Ross were joined by two new board members this year in Nathalie Stanley and Karen Busch. "We really appreciate our sponsors for helping us bring in these fine shows," said Geraint. The staff at Music Centre Canada help with sound, posters are made by Nathalie Bernard and the web is designed by Kelly Bell. The Roots Society will have three shows in September. Rich Hope and his Evil Doers brought back his rock and blues flavour to Scalliwags on Saturday, Sept. 8. Martyn Joseph will supply an acoustic folk brand of music to the same venue on Tuesday, Sept. 18. Matt Anderson, one of the most accomplished blues performers in Canada, will have the first Bailey Theatre show of the season on Thursday, Sept. 27.

Government of Canada helping youth find jobs Kevin Sorenson, Member of Parliament for Crowfoot, is pleased with the Conservative government’s newest approach to help young Canadians find jobs in high demand sectors of the economy. “This initiative will help address labour shortages by equipping youth with skills and experience, and creating opportunities for them to start careers in high-demand fields," said Sorenson. "We have a need for exactly this kind of program for the youth in our riding." Sorenson encouraged all local organizations, including businesses, not-for-profit organizations, educational institutions, and provincial, territorial and municipal governments, and others, to apply for funding under this $50 million two-year investment. "Human Resources and Skills Development Minister Diane Finley has used the most recent labour market data with supporting information from discussions with employers during round tables on skills shortages to design this new component of the federal Youth Employment Strategy," he said. "It is designed specifically to increase job prospects for young Canadians. Examples of high-demand occupations include: the skilled trades (e.g. welder, heavy duty equipment technician); tourism (hospitality administration and management); and health sciences (e.g. laboratory technician, research assistant). Applications and guidelines for both the Career Focus and Skills Link Calls for Proposals are available online at www.servicecanada.gc.ca. Applications must be received by mail or e-mail before October 19, 2012. Sorenson said the Conservative government is serious about jobs and economic growth. “We are looking at every angle and addressing existing and future skills shortages is critical to ensuring Canada’s continued economic growth and long-term prosperity. This is Budget 2012 in action: better equipping our young people and connecting them with jobs that are in high demand and helping them develop the skills and gain the experience they need. As a bonus, these projects will help employers fill labour shortages while providing youth with the allimportant, on-the-job experience they need to transition into a career. I hope we can take advantage of this opportunity locally. Again, I encourage everyone needing workers to visit the website and see if they can apply."

Frank Waldon Penner was born on October 16, 1927 to Aron M. and Maria (Goossen) Penner at Ste. Anne, Manitoba. He slipped away peacefully on August 30, 2012 at Maplewood Manor, Steinbach, MB, nearly reaching his 85th birthday. Waldon was baptized in Greenland, MB on December 20, 1942 by Minister Ervin Harms. The faith was precious to him and he embraced it to the end. On September 23, 1951, he married Mildred Wohlgemuth, sharing 60 loving years. God blessed their home with two sons and five daughters. Ordained to the gospel ministry in 1969, Dad loved God’s church and people, serving to the best of his ability. Dad grew up on the family farm enjoying nature and the outdoors. This was reflected in all his years of farming. Our family enjoyed many outings and picnics. Mom and Dad lived in Greenland, MB, Cartwright, MB and Edberg, Alberta, spending their retirement years in the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia. We, as a family, appreciate the loving care Dad received at Maplewood Manor, Steinbach, MB during his last six months. Dad was punctual and a man of his word. Bible reading and family worship were very important. He was a lover of song, encouraging us to sing. We appreciate the values Dad taught us. Surviving Dad is our Mom, his beloved wife Mildred; their children Ethelyn and Charles Friesen of Eden, MB; James and Phyllis Penner of New Norway, Alberta; Darlene and Ken Isaac of Vanderhoof, British Columbia; Elaine Friesen of Aylesford, Nova Scotia; Dwane Friesen of Creston, British Columbia; Kelly and Twila Penner of Aylesford, Nova Scotia; Shirley and Milferd Unruh of Dewberry, Alberta; Audrey and Abram Penner of Green Valley, Ontario; 31 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren; as well as his brother Abe and Carrie Penner of Cartwright, MB; sisters Nellie Toews of Steinbach, MB and Evelyn Fricke of Grafton, North Dakota; and sisters-in-law Agnes Penner of Steinbach, MB and Pauline Penner of Blumenort, MB. Joseph “Joe” Dawson Cramer Joseph Dawson Cramer of Camrose, Alberta passed away peacefully on the first day of September, 2012 at the age of 81 years with family at his side. Joe was born on February 18, 1931 to Anabel and Cromwell Cramer of Kingston, Ontario. As a young adolescent, it was apparent; Joe was a motivated, confident entrepreneur, beaming with honesty, integrity and humor. Joe married Margaret Spencely and became the proud father of four sons; Joey, Jim, Jeffrey and John. Eager to provide a better life for his family, he decided to move west to Alberta in the early 1950s. Windows of opportunity opened for Joe as he pursued careers with Imperial Oil and Muttart Builders. Before long, his sales ability stood out as he became a notable high performing salesman. As his hard work ethics were earning him a reputation in the industry, he was offered a position with Engineered Homes in Calgary as a construction manager and, in a very short time, advanced to senior vice president. It was time for Joe to follow a dream to start his construction company! He did so first in Fort McMurray, Alberta in the booming early 1970s. It was at this time in his life, Joe met Paula and her two sons, Gene and Sean Willms. Joe and Paula married in 1978 and settled in Innisfail, Alberta, providing a new home for their sons. In May 1978, Joe continued on in the construction business along with his son Jim. In 1983, the family moved to Red Deer where Joe and Jim went on to build a number of funeral homes in central and southern Alberta. In 1988, the Norsemen Inn in Camrose presented itself; Joe was offered an opportunity he could not refuse. Although he had no formal education or experience in the hospitality industry, there was a sense of excitement; the project intention would be to completely renovate and sell! Joe continued to build funeral homes across Canada bringing on Stalcorp as an additional partner. Life was fulfilling, full of love, rewards and unlimited prospects. While continuing to make their home in Red Deer and commuting to Camrose, the Norsemen Inn project was thriving! Joe soon realized the hotel business really was a lot of fun; business and personal relationships were developing; it was logical to move and, in 1996, Camrose became home. Eventually the hotel would be managed and subsequently owned by Joe and Paula’s son, Sean, all under Joe’s guidance. It was important to Joe that the staff, customers and friends he made through the Norsemen Inn would continue to be nurtured and well taken care of under Sean’s leadership; this gave Joe a very calm sense of pride, satisfaction and joy. It also gave Joe and Paula the opportunity to spend winters in the California sunshine, which he loved! Joe had a strong faith, being active in the United Church for the past 35 years, and was a longtime member of the Camrose Masonic Lodge. It was through the church he met Reverend Brian Hunter; this would become a lasting friendship full of respect for each other and an understanding of the word of the Lord. Joe’s composed nature was built on a relationship of believing that right here, right now, is exactly where we are supposed to be. When Joe’s health was challenged, he still felt he had been blessed with so many opportunities in every component of his life and the biggest blessing was Paula, his six sons and their families. For the past 15 years, Joe and Paula enjoyed six months each year in Palm Desert and six months in Camrose. In 2008, Joe’s health was challenged by a stroke; however, this did not slow him down; the winters away continued and the participation in the Norsemen Inn and every event relative to a celebration with the family was pivotal in Joe’s lifestyle. Joe’s health weakened over the past few weeks requiring hospitalization – an opportunity for family and friends to say “good-bye” prior to his passing. Joe was predeceased by his parents Anabel and Cromwell Cramer; two sons Joey and Jeffrey; sisters Della, Dorothy and Bernice; and his mother-in-law Shirley Taylor. Joe is survived by his wife and best friend, Paula; sons Jim Cramer (Willa), John Cramer (Lynn), Gene Willms (Lisa) and Sean Willms (Paige); and his grandchildren Perry (Colleen), Duncan, Haley, Brandon, DJ, Curtis, Jaeger, Layne, Jacob, Autumn and Zachary. Joe is also survived by his sister Marie Henwood of Elginburg, Ontario, Gil Taylor of Camrose, his nieces and nephews, as well as the many hearts he has touched in friendship throughout his journey. Rest in peace, Joe! A celebration of Joe’s life was held on Sunday, September 9, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. from Messiah Lutheran Church (4810-50 Street, Camrose, AB) with Rev. Brian Hunter officiating. Interment followed in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. If friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to Battle River Community Foundation. CAMROSE & DAYSLAND

John Laurence “Ladd” Parsons Dr. John Laurence “Ladd” Parsons was born in Rocky Mountain House on March 12, 1920, the second son of Albert and Helena Parsons. He grew up and went to school in Rocky and worked for his father in the timber business for awhile. Ladd joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in WWII. Ladd was posted in various places in Canada before he was sent overseas to England. While on leave in 1942, he returned to marry Marjorie (Madge) Mellors. In the next few years, they lost an infant daughter as well as an infant son. After the War, Ladd mustered out of the Air Force and returned to school. He went to Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. While there, he worked as a janitor at the college and Madge worked as a cashier in the school cafeteria. Ladd graduated in June 1947 and they returned to Alberta where he entered practice with Dr. Lou Heard in Edmonton. In 1950, Ladd purchased a practice in Camrose, Alberta from Dr. Johnson and they remained in Camrose from then on. In 1948, they had a son Gregory Albert Parsons and in 1952, another son Graham Laurence Parsons. Madge was lost in a motor vehicle accident on March 13, 1977 and Ladd was badly injured. He recovered and went back to practicing with his son Greg Parsons until his retirement. Ladd and Helen Sturdy were married on August 15, 1981. After Ladd retired from practice, he went to work for Dr. Derrill Herman at Professional Health Products. Ladd loved horses and camping in the woods – especially in the Rocky Mountain House area. He and Helen had a membership in Wilderness Village at Crimson Lake near Rocky Mountain House where they spent many wonderful and happy days. Dr. Ladd, as he was affectionately known, was kind and helpful to everyone he met. He loved his family, community, friends and the practice of chiropractic. He was very involved in the community through the Rotary Club, Lions, Royal Canadian Legion, Minor Sports, and Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron 644. He was very proud of the Air Cadets as he was the Civil Chairman. Ladd, along with several others – Blaine Fowler, Steve Shuman and Dennis Twomey – brought Squadron 644 to be awarded the number one squadron in Canada. Dr. Ladd passed away in St. Mary’s Hospital on September 4, 2012 at 92 years of age. A Funeral Service was held on 1:00 p.m. on Saturday September 8, 2012 from Burgar Memorial Chapel with Rev. Brian Hunter officiating. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 57, or to the charity of one’s choice. Try senior floor curling By Helen Grant

Now that our men have the curling rocks all oiled and polished, the floor curling club is set to start the new fall season. If the summer turnouts are any indication, we should have a great group. During the summer, the club held two in-house tournaments and also a fun day where all men's teams played against allwomen teams. There were lots of laughs and, of course, the women let the men win. As well as attracting a few new members in the summer, our club had some out of town visitors. Some came from as far away as Mexico, who were guests of club members Antonia and Dan Padillo of Hay Lakes. They joined us in playing a game they had never before seen, nor heard of and seemed to enjoy themselves. Floor curling takes place at the Mirror Lake Centre on Mondays and Tuesdays beginning at 1:30 p.m. If you are looking for fun and friendly competition come join us.

In September of 2011, a choir program was offered at Camrose Church of God to children ranging in age from seven through twelve. Our team sought to provide a faith-based program with Biblical content, open to all children in the community. The program has since been developed with the objective of supporting discipleship and spiritually transformational experiences using the fine arts as the teaching medium. For this fall, the program has been extended to encompass the interests and needs of children ages six through thirteen. Musical skills, visual arts experiences and even science investigations are components that reinforce the current themes presented by Seismic’s leaders. Vocal and physical warm-ups are directed at the beginning of each session, and activities with a game-like structure are very popular with the children. Biblical themes are introduced utilizing a variety of storytelling tools, and exploring scripture is regularly incorporated. The staff includes Carolyn Hartman, Nola Hutchinson and Donnalyn Froese. Carolyn, a retired teacher, has a background in Drama and English. She is the former founder and director of Lookinglass Players, Sparling Spirit and the Jack Stuart Drama Club. Nola has a background in music and education and enjoys singing in a choir and being onstage with a local drama group, Churchmice Players. Donnalyn, accompanist of the troupe, is also the Sunday School Coordinator at the Camrose Church of God and loves to play piano and organ. Each session begins with a visually artistic experience and “ice breaker” period. Next, children are invited to participate in vocal and physical warm-ups, often in the form of games and other fun-filled activities. The Biblical theme is introduced in the form of a story or parable from the Scriptures . SEIMIC!'s weekly theme is reinforced through puppetry, flannelboard, role play, creative movement, craft, or any number of alternative experiences. Finally, the musical or creative dramatics theme is introduced. Concepts such as rhythm, pitch, harmony, tone, melody, reading music, pantomime, speech arts, and improvisational theatre are taught. The final part of the session involves utilizing performing arts skills to “make a joyful noise.” SEISMIC!’s musical and theatrical repertoire includes choruses, worship songs, action material, theme/seasonal pieces, and Bible stories. All sessions are free of charge and take place at the Camrose Church of God, 4722 55 Street Camrose. Seismic will begin its activities on October 3, 2012, and will continue to meet each Wednesday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. For more information or to preregister, please phone the church at 780672-3461.

Tillicum creates future structure plan By Murray Green

Camrose County passed the last area structure plan of the hamlets within its boundaries on Aug. 28. Council requested that each hamlet complete an area structure plan to prepare for future growth. The plan was created based on the feedback of the community through a steering committee, two public meetings and surveys. The draft was presented informally to council on June 20 in a workshop. Since then, a few administrative changes and comments from the public have been incorporated, but the overall intent of the bylaw wasn't changed. "The revisions to the plan were mailed out to area residents and we received one letter of objection from the residents of Paradise Resort," said county planning manager Anjah Howard. "The majority of landowners within the study area are satisfied with the Tillicum area structure plan and the process used to develop it." Ross W. Sharp and Associates, in partnership with Durrance Projects was awarded the contract to produce an area structure plan for the defined area of Paradise Resort, Lakeview and Tillicum Beach and the immediate surrounding area in October of 2011. "The entire area has about 800 acres. It includes future development, a gravel area and Tillicum beach," said Ross, during his presentation. "Remember, this is for a 25 to 30 year span." The Tillicum Area Structure Plan is the last in a series of six hamlet area structure plans that were budgeted for by the county. "One of the initial tasks was to mail a direct invitation to every resident of the area inviting them to participate on the steering committee that would guide the production of the plan," added Ross. "A group of five longtime residents of the area accepted the challenge of sitting on the committee and the initial meetings started in November last year. Four residents who stuck with the project from the beginning included Cal Omoth, Lee Johns, Pat Hagen and Katherine Gagnon." The county planning and development department provided the consulting team with a library of reference materials dealing with the Driedmeat Lake, Tillicum Beach, Paradise Resort and the surrounding area. Access was also granted to the county’s web site, which included air photography, topographic mapping and other electronic data. The committee approved the terms of reference for the project and more importantly provided insight into the challenges and opportunities that they saw as long term residents of the area. The first key milestone of the project was a three hour vision session held in February. "The focus of this session was to garner input from those in attendance respecting the challenges and opportunities within the asp area with reference to the topic areas of servicing (water, sanitary, storm, roads), development opportunities, recreation and environment. Ques-

Residents at Tillicum Beach and Paradise Resort want the area to be left as natural as possible to keep it full of wildlife, birds and fish.

tionnaires were circulated and placed on the county’s web site to gather further input from those who could not attend the session," stated Ross. "The response was excellent. The in depth knowledge of the area by those participating provided the consulting team with important input that reshaped the terms of reference and guided the writing of the initial draft plan." An overview, objectives and recommendations were drafted for each of the land use categories within the area structure plan.

Camrose County wants a plan for the future of Tillicum.

The open house, which was well advertised by the county, took place on April 21 with more than 30 people in attendance. Many of the residents had received their own copy of the draft prior to the open house. Questionnaires were circulated and placed on the county’s web site. "I give kudos to the county for going the extra mile to ensure everyone was aware of the open house," said Ross. The responses to the questionnaires that were received were excellent and very positive. Over 85 per cent of the responses were supportive of the recommendations within the initial draft area structure plan, which was especially true for those who had participated in the vision session. "The most significant concerns and questions were raised

by the residents of Paradise Resort. A lot of them missed the open house so the committee met on June 7 to review a number of amendments to the draft based on the input received from questionnaires and letters to the county," Ross said. Items added or changed included background on the Beesley farm and the grazing lease, and the county’s purchase of the lands for gravel extraction purposes. The draft was amended to include the Beesley spring area as Environmental Reserve and added a recommendation regarding the livestock grazing lease. It incorporated the idea of adding security measures (surveillance, restricted access at night) to the design of a marina. Recommendation was made that the proposed shoreline trail not be built along the Paradise Resort shoreline, but moved to the north within a green zone between the back of proposed lots and the gravel extraction area. An amended recommendation that the north and south ends of the lake be treated as a sanctuary for waterfowl by restricting access to these locations was added. "I emphasize that the residential development opportunities being recommended cover a time frame of at least 25 years," said Ross. "It showed that the overriding advantage of expanding the hamlet boundaries is to facilitate long term infrastructure improvements by gaining access to provincial and or federal infrastructure grants. It is important to have some growth." The plan recommends reducing the number of proposed lots on the county owned vacant lot south of Paradise Drive from eight to four, allowing for a 30 meter wide buffer on either side of the proposed lots. "We really bolstered the buffer zone. We recommend that the county should undertake a hydro geological study to determine the impact of the gravel extraction on the existing aquifer and lake water," added Ross. "The long term use of the reclaimed gravel extraction area could perhaps accommodate a park and golf course." Council received a letter from residents of Paradise Resort

dated August 19. Several residents also attended the council meeting to voice their displeasure of the long-range proposals. "Our interpretation of the recommendations (a 1980 study) was that future resort or country residential development along the shoreline of Driedmeat Lake was discouraged for the lake with the exception of Tillicum Beach. Paradise Resort was also not considered for expansion because of the gravel extraction being proposed," said several lot owners in the Paradise Resort area. "The draft plan is a long term plan and at some point in the future the gravel extraction area will be reclaimed, perhaps for a golf course. The potential of both shore front and lots backing onto a future golf course poses a strong real estate valuation argument." Landowners at the council meeting also requested that a May 4 letter that was used in the plan, to be read into the records. The letter stated the importance of the lake for waterfowl, a shortage of well water, a concern for the shoreline if walkways are constructed, the extraction of gravel, an increase of traffic, disruption of wildlife, concerns over promoting the area as a recreation site, residential expansion,

"I would like to know the motivation behind the expansion of the Tillicum area." developing vacant lots that are intended to be green spaces and soil erosion. "I would like to know the motivation behind the expansion of the Tillicum area," said Mike Jones, a resident of Paradise Resort. "The county has a population of about 7,000 people and declining. You want to bring in 3,000 people into this area and grow the population on our backs. I would be surprised if you had an answer of where these people will be coming from." Mike explained that the Paradise Resort area doesn't want to become part of the future hamlet of Tillicum. "You say you want to turn the gravel pit area into a golf course. How long before the gravel pit encroaches the area by our

homes? There are environmental issues with having a golf course so close to the water. There is fertilizer run off; pesticides; have you consulted with the City of Camrose because it is the city's water supply; increased water use, which we already stated is a problem; and interruption of birds and wildlife. Suddenly, we are being fast tracked and we are Phase 1." A resident pointed out that the lake is hazardous and it is not for swimming. Only the centre of the lake is free of weeds, but the water contains green-blue algae. "The plan was circulated to the City of Camrose and we met with their engineers," said Ross. "I regret now using that 3,000 (population) figure because it takes in the whole area and I doubt that it will reach 3,000 in 30 years. If you take 3.1 people in each household times the number of available lots and that is how I come up with that number. It represents the maximum number for the overall land base." Since Tillicum is in Reeve Don Gregorwich's area, he turned the meeting over to Deputy Reeve Vern Peterson. "This plan is part of the area structure for the entire county. I'm confidant that everyone has had the opportunity to have input. All of the input has been incorporated in the plan. This is a guideline for the future," said councillor Don. "We know that there are residents who have septic systems that are pathetic and contribute to the water problem. This is a recommended strategy and truly, we have to think about the entire community. When we have development, we will seek more information and local input at that time." Councillor Brian Austrom said the council has been open and transparent and will continue to do so. "This conceptual plan is worth considering," added councillor Brian. A motion to have Paradise Resort not listed as Phase 1 was turned down because any phase could be deemed as the first phase at the time of development, or if it is developed. This didn't sit well with several residents. However, second and third readings of the Tillicum area structure plan bylaw were passed.

Kodiaks win three of four exhibitions By Murray Green

Although winning exhibition games doesn't count in the standings, the Camrose Kodiaks have started the year with a 3-1 record in Alberta Junior Hockey League pre-season play. The Kodiaks scored four goals in the third period to defeat the Fort McMurray Oil Barons 6-4 on Sept. 1. Camrose took advantage of the Oil Barons' penalties by netting three power play tallies. Nolan Marshall scored twice and Taylor Allen, Ryan Huolt, Luc

Vandale and Ty Clay provided single markers to pace the scoring attack. Goalie Matt Gibney stopped 27 of 31 shots fired his way by Fort McMurray, while Camrose recorded 32 shots on goal. Okotoks handed Camrose its only loss, 4-2, on Aug. 31. A bad second period, where the Kodiaks were outscored 3-1, was the difference in the game. It was the only period the Kodiaks were outscored in the preseason. Brett Njaa and Huolt scored for the Kodiaks while

netminder Devin McDonald stopped 46 of 50 shots to keep the game close. The Kodiaks needed overtime to edge the Brooks Bandits 4-3 on Aug. 30. Tanner McMaster garnered the winning tally in the extra frame after he tied the game late in the third period. After a scoreless first period, the clubs each netted two goals in the second. Vandale and Dallas Bergstrom notched the goals for Camrose. Gibney turned away 38 of 41 shots in the Kodiaks' net.

Camrose started on a positive note by defeating the Okotoks Oilers 3-1 in the EnCana Arena, Aug. 27. After a game in Lloydminster on Sept. 12, the Camrose Kodiaks return home for a match against the Bonnyville Pontiacs on Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m. and face the Whitecourt Wolverines on Sunday, Sept. 16, at 2 p.m. Camrose will also take on the Oilers on Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the EnCana Arena.

Full house for Registration Night

Marian Williams, from Stoney Creek Natural Foods, in front of the Stoney Creek Natural Foods display at the Community Registration Night at the Camrose Community Centre September 5. More than 1,000 Camrose and area residents passed through the doors to visit one or more of the 66 clubs and organizations which had set up displays. A common comment was that "I can't believe there is so much to do in Camrose." A Camrose clubs and organizations directory may be found at Camrose FCSS.ca. Camrose and District Craft Centre member Lois Larson conducted a spinning display during Community Registration Night.

Toyota Tundra Built for any job

Geoffrey Skakun Toyota City By Dan Jensen

With two powerful engines, three cab styles and three bed lengths, the new Toyota Tundra at Toyota City, Wetaskiwin, is well suited to whatever job you throw its way. “It’s everything you could want in a pick-up and more,” said Toyota City owner/dealer principal Geoffrey Skakun. Tundra’s i-Force 5.7 litre V8 engine delivers 381 horsepower and 401 lb.-ft. of torque. Fuel consumption on 4x2 models is rated at 15.8 litres per 100 km city, and 11.0 litres per 100 km highway. Efficiency is boosted by a Dual VVT-1 (independently controlled on the intake and exhaust valves), a low-friction cam assembly, and transmission and power steering coolers that reduce heat build-up under heavy loads. The 310 horsepower i-Force 4.6 litre V8 delivers peak torque of 327 lb.-ft. at just 3,400 rpm. Uphill and downhill shift logic help control power for maximum efficiency on steep grades. Fuel efficiency is rated at 15.0 litres per 100 km city and 10.4 litres per 100 km highway. Tundra’s six-speed automatic delivers a wide overall gear range. That translates into a brisk acceleration at low- and mid-range rpm. And first gear’s ratio is extremely low, making the truck ideal for serious towing. The transmission is equipped with an automatic transmission fluid warmer for cold-start performance. Tundra 4x2 regular cabs with standard and long beds can handle payloads of 685 to 855 kg and have a towing capacity ranging from 4,395 to 4,715 kg. The towing capacity for Tundra double cabs with standard or long beds ranges from 3,580 to 4,535 kg, while the payload capacity ranges from 564 to 655 kg. The towing and payload capacity for the short bed CrewMax are 4,080 and 585 to 620 kg. respectively. Double cab and CrewMax Tundras are equipped with a two-piece drive shaft that uses steel in the front half and aluminum in the rear to cut unsprung weight and reduce rotational mass for enhanced acceleration. On 4x4 models, the drive shaft uses large-diameter splines that allow the shaft length to

adapt to articulation of the suspension and increase the drive shaft’s ability to handle high torque loads. Tundra’s tailgate opens and closes easily. Two fingers will do the job, thanks to a gas-charged damping strut that helps make sure it won’t slam if you drop it. A flexible deck rail system helps keep loads from shifting. The trapezoidal rear section of Tundra’s Triple Tech frame allows the rear leaf springs to be positioned toe-out, where the front is mounted farther out than the rear. The result: the trapezoidal rear frame section and the toe-out rear leaf springs combined deliver superior lateral stability when cornering, and especially while towing heavy loads. Tundra regular cab interiors are equipped with a host of practical features to help take the edge off a rough day. The headsets can be adjusted to let you keep your hard hat where it belongs – on your head. Behind the front seat is a large flat storage tray that can hold toolboxes and a small air compressor. The double cab is big where it should be. There’s ample room to stretch out and relax so your crew isn’t cramped in the back. The rear doors open wide and are forward hinged with an impressive 80-degree opening so people and cargo can be easily loaded. CrewMax is a rugged truck that doubles as a comfortable mobile office with plenty of leg and headroom for you and your crew. CrewMax is available in two models: the SR5 and Limited. The Platinum

Alzheimer Society says put on the coffee This September, if someone you care about is living with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia, show your support by taking part in a Coffee Break event in your community. Coffee Break is the largest annual fund-raising campaign of the Alzheimer Society that raises money locally for hands-on programs and services offered by Alzheimer Societies in over 150 communities across Canada. Anyone can take part in this do-it-yourself fundraiser by making a donation in exchange for a cup of coffee. It can be as simple as hosting a coffee party at home, in the office or a public venue, or as elaborate as organizing a coffee-thon using social media. This year’s target goal is $1.5 million dollars. “Increased funding for services is essential to meet the needs of the growing numbers of Canadians with dementia,” says Naguib Gouda, CEO, Alzheimer Society of Canada. “Having access to services like counselling, day programs and respite care can make all the difference in the way families live with this devastating disease.” Dementia is a significant health issue in Canada; the World Health Organization called it a “ticking time bomb” in its recent report, Dementia: A Public Health Priority. Dementia affects over 500,000 Canadians today and will rise to 1.1 million by 2038. Although the causes are

unknown, older Canadians are at an increased risk. After 65, the risk for dementia doubles every five years, and according to the 2011 Canada Census, 22.8 per cent of the Canadian population will be 65 and older by 2031. “It’s no different in Red Deer,” says Bill Gaudette, CEO, Alzheimer Society Alberta & Northwest Territories. “The dementia crisis is now and it’s in our communities. We still don’t have a cure for the disease, but day programs, caregiver support groups, respite and other services help families to live well and independently longer. Our programs are increasingly vital. We need funds to keep them active.” Dementia’s steadily increasing numbers will also have a tremendous impact on caregivers who already spend 231 million hours per year caring for someone with dementia. That number is expected to jump to 756 million hours per year by 2038. Family caregivers also experience higher levels of stress and other healthrelated conditions. Coffee Break kicks off September 20, but participants can host events throughout the month and until the end of October. To register and start planning your Coffee Break event, visit www. alzheimercoffeebreak.ca. About Alzheimer’s disease

Alzheimer’s disease is the leading form of dementia. It is a fatal progressive disease of the brain that robs memory

and steals the ability to reason, communicate and perform daily tasks. Changes in the brain can begin to appear decades before diagnosis and progression can last between seven and 10 years. Eventually, the person affected will require 24-hour care and supervision. Age is the single biggest risk factor but the disease can strike as early as 40. About Coffee Break®

Now in its 17th year, Coffee Break is the Alzheimer Society’s largest community-based fundraiser that has raised over $14 million for local Alzheimer Society programs and services. This year’s event is generously supported by Bulk Barn, Mother Parkers Tea and Coffee Inc. and Kent Building Supplies. About the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories

The Alzheimer Society is part of the leading nationwide health organization for people affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia in Canada. The Society in Alberta supports innovative research, provides enhanced care and support to people with the disease, their families and their caregivers and is a prominent voice with government. Today in Alberta approximately 40,000 people have dementia, with 17 per cent of these having been diagnosed under the age of 65. This gives Alberta the highest prevalence of early onset in Canada

Do you know of an outstanding volunteer? By Dan Jensen

Know an outstanding volunteer who deserves a bit of recognition? The Government of Alberta is accepting nominations until Sept. 25 for the 2012 Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards. Nomination forms may be found at http://culture. alberta.ca/voluntarysector/ stars/default.aspx. The Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards recognize extraordinary Albertans whose volunteer efforts have contributed to the well-being of their community and fellow community members. Six

awards, two in each category of youth, adult and senior, are presented annually on or around International Volunteer Day, Dec. 5. "The Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards Program is an integral part of government's commitment to Alberta's volunteer sector," states the Alberta Culture website. "Seeking ways to pay tribute to volunteers is part of the Government of Alberta's way of acknowledging and thanking our volunteers whose generous efforts contribute to the vibrant quality of life Albertans so enjoy."

Stars of Alberta nominees must exemplify the spirit of community service, demonstrate exemplary initiative, leadership and creativity in his or her service to others, serve as a role model for other volunteers and inspire them to engage in volunteer service, and improve the overall quality of life of fellow Albertans and community as a whole. Stars of Alberta 2011 recipients were Jamil Jivraj, a youth leader in the Edmonton community and a role model for his peers; Stephen McPhee, of Airdrie, a 10-year-old boy

with a humbled spirit and an incredible passion to make sure all children in need have a bed to sleep in, a home with grass to run on, and lots of toys; Daryl Boanr, of Edmonton, or "LT" as he is lovingly referred to by the youth, a cornerstone of the Da Bom Squad program; Lynda Jonson, who has touched the lives of many citizens in Hinton; Gareth Jones,a remarkable man who works tirelessly to improve community life in St. Albert; and Clem Kuelker, a pillar of the community of Didsbury as well as the surrounding area for many years.

The 2012 season at the Camrose Railway Station has been extremely successful! We welcomed guests from across Alberta and the western provinces, eastern Canada, Normal Wells and Yellowknife; as well as Singapore, England, Australia, Germany, Costa Rica, Norway, Northern Ireland and South Africa. US visitors included families from Wyoming, California, Oregon, Kentucky, Georgia, Arizona and Texas. We welcomed several tour buses to our site and provided children’s school programs almost every day during the month of April, May and June as well as summer programs for local day camps. We had four wedding services, several family events and a couple of product parties booked. We were very fortunate to have great weather for all our major celebrations and festivals and considered each one successful! Our Founders Day Firebox Family Festival was extremely well attended and enjoyed. Volunteers, staff and board members would like to send Camrosians a big thank you for coming to visit the site and for bringing out-of-town visitors. The Station had a shift in priorities this year and we are very pleased with the results. In our Station Tea Room we discontinued serving Saturday meals and instead offered a menu of homemade traditional prairie desserts. Weekdays we had self serve cookies and beverages available. This freed summer staff and volunteers to concentrate on greeting visitors and interpreting the Station museum and Garden Park. We felt a better connection to those who came and received great response. The Camrose Railway Station is very appreciative of the many partnerships enjoyed with members of the community and organizations. We would like to recognize our local newspapers and media for the comprehensive coverage given to our summer events. We are thankful for the annual resources given by the City of Camrose, both financially and help with grass cutting. Staff and volunteers are happy to welcome off-season visitors; please call 780-6723099 for information. We have excellent facilities for meetings and family events, to book please call the same number. The gardens have been particularly spectacular this growing season and we didn’t get hail this year! Flowers in the garden are just turning from summer to autumn blooms. On warm days the butterflies are plentiful, don’t miss the wildflower garden. Grounds are open; please come visit and enjoy the tranquility of our stunning fall gardens.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Stroke prevention program is a model for all hospitals By Murray Green

Covenant Health St. Mary's Hospital Camrose is a role model for the rest of the hospitals in the province. The heart and stroke department received exemplary reviews as having a stroke care system that even the highest ranking professionals in Edmonton can learn from. Dr. Blair O’Neill, senior medical director of CV Health and Stroke for Alberta Health Services and is the president of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society and his team of professionals toured the St. Mary's facility on Sept. 6. Dr. O’Neill marvelled at the system used by St. Mary's and indicated that all hospitals could learn from Cheryl King and her staff at the local hospital. “What has been so unique is that St. Mary’s has really embraced all of the new projects that have come forward. You only have to treat about four patients with heart failure to avoid unnecessary mortality, or unnecessary hospitalization, so St. Mary's is one of the first to embrace the concept and have a very successful model,” said Dr. O'Neill. "At the same time, other parts of the province tried this and failed. It was an immediate success here right from the get-go." Dr. O'Neill said, "If you don't treat aggressively, the risk factor (for having a stroke) is about 10 per cent and most of that is front loaded in the first few weeks. If you aggressively treat the risk factors, you can reduce that number to about two per cent. That is an 80 per cent reduction," he explained. "St. Mary's has adopted that. The other thing is that St. Mary's has been really a leader, better than the big cities, at the primary stroke centre where patients come in and they are taken to a CT scanner." Dr. O’Neill and his team made a special trip to learn about the cardiovascular and stroke initiatives that the dedicated stroke team at St. Mary’s has implemented with so much success since they launched the stroke program in 2007. He pointed out that smaller hospitals are better at taking care of the problems right away. "I want to learn what is going on here, so that I can take that as a best practice to similar centres around the province where we haven't been as successful before.” "The spirit of let's get this done and looked after for the patients and their families

(makes a huge difference)," Dr. O'Neill said. He went on to say that the fact that all of the doctors, facilities and pharmacists are available close by all help to the success. "They all form a team to focus on the patient and the family. St. Mary's has mastered it with philosophy and dedication of staff and it's simply amazing just to listen to the success of the program that Cheryl took us through. It's incredible to hear about the things they are doing. It shows the benefits of combining cardiovascular and stroke into one unit for St. Mary’s." Cheryl King, the stroke team clinical lead at St. Mary’s led a visit from the Stroke Strategic Clinical Network to share the key to the success of their patientsaving stroke program innovations during the presentation of the programs for Dr. O’Neill and his team, followed by a mock acute telestroke in the emergency department. Prevention of strokes has soared with the addition of the atrial fibrillation program and it comes down to having great staff members. “Our three nurses have more than 20 years of dedication to St. Mary’s Hospital, to the community, to the patients, to the mission of Covenant Health and we truly believe that,” said Cheryl. “When I worked on the floor I didn't think too much about it. But, since working at the clinic I have seen how prevention can really help the patient. I really do believe in the mission and in engagement in my facility and the people that I serve. That's why our success in our clinic is because of our heart being in it for every single one of our patients; we want our programs to succeed. We care.” St. Mary’s Hospital is a primary stroke centre with a stroke prevention clinic, a heart function clinic, inpatient stroke services, a heart failure optimization program and an atrial fibrillation detection program. Since becoming a stroke centre in 2007, St. Mary's has treated 315 patients suffering from cerebrovascular accidents or strokes and 384 transient ischemic attacks, or mini-stroke suffering patients. “If we are going to make this program successful we have to make it easy for the family physician. Everything has to be easy to make it work,” Cheryl said. Continued on page 38

AHS raises awareness of suicide prevention By Heather Kipling AHS Communications Albertans can play a role in preventing suicide by knowing and recognizing the warning signs, the Senior Medical Director of Addiction and Mental Health for Alberta Health Services (AHS) says. “Being aware of warning signs is such an important step,” says Dr. Michael Trew. “Some people believe talking to someone who may be suicidal puts the idea in their head. In actuality, being ready to openly discuss suicide lets the person know you care and want to help.” Monday, Sept. 10, was World Suicide Prevention Day. Some suicide warning signs include: Talking about suicide. Making statements about hopelessness, helplessness or worthlessness. Showing a loss of interest in pleasurable activities. Personality changes. Becoming cheerful after a period of depression, which may mean an individual has already made the decision to escape his or her problems through suicide. Alberta has the fourth highest suicide rate among Canadian provinces with more than 400 deaths reported each year. Men between the ages of 25 and 55 account for more than half of all Alberta suicides and Aboriginal youth are up to five times more likely to die of suicide as compared to the general population. “Although some groups are at a higher risk for suicide, no one is immune,” says Dr. Trew. “It doesn’t matter how young or old, how much money you make or what ethnic background you come from, everyone is affected by suicide.” In recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day, a student and staff barbecue was held at the Camrose Composite High School on Sept. 10, hosted in partnership by Alberta Health Services (AHS), the Regional Suicide Prevention Council of East Central Alberta, the Children’s Health and Mentorship Project and Camrose Composite High School. The Camrose Open Door, local police services, and Child and Family Services staff were also in attendance. “In addition to the lunch, students were invited to write welcoming and positive messages in chalk on the sidewalk leading up to the school,” says Sandra Loades, Addiction and Mental Health promotion facilitator in Camrose. “The positive thoughts and messages will help promote a sense of belonging and community for students.” Students were also provided with a suicide prevention resource card when they arrived. If you or someone you know is having suicidal thoughts, please call Health Link Alberta at 1-866-408-LINK (5465), or the Mental Health Helpline at 1-877-303-2642, which are available 24 hours a day

Dr. O’Neill said, “I think that showing a shining example to the rest and saying they can do it, why can’t we? Lessons learned are important because maybe they (past failures) didn’t keep it simple enough so that they didn’t get by in their areas. These are the lessons we take elsewhere,” said Dr. O'Neill. “This is clearly the most successful site of its size. Teamwork has made this happen and we have to figure how we are going to do that elsewhere.” The proactive stroke treatment, prevention and education

programs are attracting the attention from all other stroke programs. The atrial fibrillation detection program has screened over 2,000 patients for atrial fibrillation in the Camrose emergency room alone, since launching on July 10. Atrial fibrillation is an irregular heart rhythm that can lead to stroke. About 60 were sent for more tests. Covenant Health is Canada's largest Catholic health care organization with over 14,000 physicians, employees and volunteers serving in 12 communities across Alberta.

Terry Fox Run Sept. 16 By Dan Jensen

Pledge sheets are available now for the 26th annual Terry Fox Run in Camrose. “We have the forms available at the Augustana bookstore, the fitness centre at Edgeworth Centre and at various businesses downtown,” said Terry Fox Run co-chair Cathy Davis. Forms are also available for download at www.terryfox.org. The Terry Fox Run will get underway from the Bill Fowler Centre starting at 11 a.m. September 16. Registration is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. “We will have three km and 10 km trails marked out,” said Davis. “People will be allowed to run, walk, rollerblade, bike or use their wheelchairs.” The Camrose Church of God will be serving breakfast prior to the beginning of the run. "They serve the breakfast every year as part of their community involvement day," explained Davis. "We're always pleased to have them involved." The Camrose Terry Fox Run has always enjoyed great participation. “Part of that is due to the fact the run is non-competitive and part is due to the fact that Camrose has such a great system of paved trails,” said Davis. Terry Fox Run organizers are hoping the turnout for this year's event will be the highest ever. “We know the more participants we have the greater the fund-raising total will be,” said Davis. Terry Fox Runs in Camrose have raised a total of $95,675.83 for the Terry Fox Foundation. Eighty-four cents of every dollar raised goes to cancer research. Receipts will be issued by the Terry Fox Foundation to anyone who pledges $20 or more.

Keeping Terry’s memory alive

The Terry Fox Foundation strives to keep alive the heroic efforts and integrity that Terry embodied, while recognizing the duality of its mandate. Along with raising money for research, it continues to share the story of Terry Fox. People from around the world are taught about Terry Fox in the hope that their lives might be enriched by his example. Terry Fox was 18 years old when he was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer). At that time, a common treatment for this type of cancer was amputation, and Terry had his right leg removed six inches above his knee. Determined to do something to prevent others from having to go through what he did, Terry decided to run across the country to raise money, and awareness for cancer research. He called his journey The Marathon of Hope. With fierce determination, Terry started his fund-raising journey on April 12, 1980, in St. John’s, Newfoundland. He ran 42 km every day for 143 days before the spread of his own cancer forced him to stop in Thunder Bay, Ontario. He died of cancer in June, 1981, at the age of 22.
