County purchases new graders By Murray Green
Camrose County council purchased two new John Deere graders for next year. Public works manager Graham Backus recommended that the county purchase two 2013 John Deere 870GP graders from Brandt Tractor in Edmonton at the submitted tender price including radial tires, five-year full machine warranty with attachments. "The total price of $576,800 plus GST is to be paid under the 2013 budget," said Graham. "Both Finning (Caterpillar) and Strongco (Volvo) have a buy back program, but Brandt has a return program for trade-ins," explained Graham.

County council approves purchase of graders Continued from page 3
"We purchased John Deere graders in the past and have had minimal down time with the machines and that is reflected in our recommendation to purchase these graders. The operators prefer Caterpillars, but for the price difference it is pretty hard to justify." The county received tenders for the replacement of two graders from Finning Ltd., Brandt Tractor and Strongco. The dealers were asked to submit bids as per the spreadsheets provided by public works.

Co-op gas bars awash in pink

Wearing their pink shirts were Bryan Cross, Manny Mitchell and Cassie Fillinger. By Dan Jensen
The two Wildrose Co-op gas bars in Camrose are awash in pink. The gas bars are covering their walls with paperized pink ribbons that have been purchased by customers for $1 each in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. "As of right now (Oct. 18)
we have sold 2,106 of them here at the east end gas bar and a little more than 500 at the downtown gas bar," said east side gas bar assistant manager Leeann Samoisette. The goal is to sell between 4,000 and 5,000 before the end of the month. Samoisette is impressed with the generosity of the community in helping to fight a disease that
affects so many members of the community. "To be able to paper the walls with pink ribbons like this is unbelievable," she said. "It is remarkable to see how many there are." Staff at both gas bar locations are wearing pink shirts to draw attention to the fact that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Interiors on Main named Small Business of Year By Dan Jensen
Interiors on Main was named Small Business of the Year at the 28th annual Small Business Week Awards Banquet of the Camrose Chamber of Commerce Oct. 17. Interiors on Main is a full service retail store offering interior and cabinetry design, fine furniture, custom cabinetry, window coverings and draperies, custom tiling, area carpets, lamps, prints and other home decor. The staff consists of a team of interior designers, as well as a tiler, a cabinetry installer, and a fabricator of window fashions. The full-service business has been in Camrose for decades, starting under the name Draperies Plus, then becoming Draperies Plus Furnishings and Design about 12 years ago, before relocating and rebranding to become Interiors on Main in 2003. Over the years the staff has doubled, and the product lines have expanded. The business now produces its own Design Lines publication, which is distributed throughout central Alberta. Team members are continuously upgrading their skills and knowledge through workshops and training, and participating in certification programs offered by various product suppliers. "As their slogan says, Interiors on Main prides itself on offering the uncommon and exceptional in furnishings and design," said Small Business Week Awards Banquet mistress of ceremonies Diane Hutchinson. Interiors on Main owner Judy McLean said Camrose is a community with extraordinary people, extraordinary businesses and extraordinary services. "I am proud to be here and have a business in Camrose." McLean had words of praise for the Interiors on Main staff. "These are the people who serve you and are extremely talented, and I am so pleased to have them as my team," she said.
Accepting the Small Business of the Year award from ATB Financial's Dan Allen (right) were: (left to right) Interiors on Main lady tiler Patricia Fielding, installer Dan O'Riordan, fabricator Annabelle Heinz, owner Judy McLean, interior designer Kyla Duchscherer, and interior designer Kimberley Clennett.
"They make me smile when I go to work in the morning." Other nominees for the 2012 Small Business of the Year award were Identify Digital Media, the Lefse House, and Pioneer Machine and Crane. Identify Digital Media provides innovative website solutions, world class identity branding, and application development services to a growing clientele of businesses in Camrose and beyond. The company was started in 2007 by Derrick Schwabe, who, after establishing websites for local businesses and sports organizations, evolved his offering to include graphic design, mobile apps and hands-on marketing consulting. Recent campaigns have included the rebranding of Camrose Cable into Lynx and a new website for Camrose Cycle. Power Engineering Consulting Group recently surpassed $100,000 in online sales thanks to an Identify Digital Media developed and maintained website. The Lefse House produces Scandinavian baking products
which are sold retail from a local shop and wholesale through a number of Alberta grocery stores. Started by two local women in 1998 and purchased by Bernell Odegard in 2002, the Lefse House also features a small coffee shop and gift gallery featuring all things Scandinavian. The Lefse House has catered events for the Norwegian ambassador and is now the official supplier of lefse to the Norwegian consulate in Ottawa. The Lefse House has also been featured in trade and tourism magazines, bringing tours and other business to Camrose. "Bernell (Odegard) and Jane (Beck) make sure their staff receives good quality training in food safety, customer service and hospitality, and also emphasize promotion," said Hutchinson. "In addition, the local business is a supporter of a variety of local causes, and often caters at local special events." Pioneer Machine and Crane opened in 1988 with one rented bay, three employees and big plans for the future. Twenty-
four years later, the company has relocated to its current location, doubled the size of its main facility, and added several large outbuildings. The owners constantly strive to have the latest equipment and technology available for customers. Plus, they have gone from having one crane to three, all of which are kept busy throughout central Alberta. "Owners the Hare family have a long history in Camrose and are pleased to be generous supporters of a variety of community causes and activities," said Hutchinson. The Camrose Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year award is presented annually to an independently owned and operated business with 25 or less employees. Guidelines used by the small business week committee in the selection of a winner include significant business achievement within the last three years, sustained financial performance, involvement in business and/or professional associations and community activities, and demonstrated a
Rybalka named Ambassador of the Year By Dan Jensen
The 2012 Ambassador of the Year award was presented to Camrose Kodiaks' coach and general manager Boris Rybalka at the Camrose Chamber of Commerce Small Business Week celebration Oct. 17. Rybalka has been with the Camrose Kodiaks for 15 years, guiding his teams to a national championship, five provincial championships, and five western Canadian championships. He has been named Alberta Junior Hockey League coach of the year, and has won a gold medal at the Canada Winter Games. "Boris has certainly been invited to move to greener pastures, but he is proud to call Camrose home and is happy to tell other people where he is from," said Small Business Week banquet mistress of ceremonies Diane Hutchinson. Rybalka is involved with local events and charities, and gives his time to supporting whatever he can, in addition to mentoring and teaching life skills to the players he coaches. Rybalka expressed his gratitude to the late Elwyn Grattidge, who he said he was fortunate to know.
Chamber president Dawn Anderson presented the Ambassador of the Year award to Boris Rybalka.
"One thing he told me was that the grass is not always greener," he said. "He said I shouldn't leave Camrose until I have won two national titles. I guess there is a reason I just can't win that second." Rybalka said that Camrose has been a great community. "My wife and I could have gone to New York or to Europe.
We could have gone to many places, but Camrose is home." The other nominee for the Ambassador of the Year award was Glenda Rott. Affiliated with Coldwell Banker Realty, Rott was named the company's rookie of the year in 2010, and achieved the International President's Elite Award in 2011. She was part of the Hot Air Balloon Championships
held in Camrose in 2011, and portrayed Signe Spokelli during this year's Founders Days festival. She has been instrumental in bringing to Camrose a home program which teaches people how to buy a house and assists them financially. "The program demonstrates Glenda's goal of doing more than selling property, but also educating the community along the way," said Hutchinson. Glenda considers Camrose to be the very best place to live and work and, as a realtor, she tells people so at every opportunity – in person, by phone and on her website. The Camrose Ambassador of the Year award was established by the Camrose Chamber of Commerce to recognize those individuals who promote Camrose and Camrose County through awareness in associations, clubs, community groups and organizations, and who promote goodwill as advocates of Camrose. Previous Ambassador of the Year award recipients have included Kevin Gurr in 2011, Norm Mayer in 2010, Bob Prestage in 2009 and Ron Grue in 2008.

Letters to the Editor
CAFCL SCHOLARSHIP Cornerstone Christian Academy Grade 12 student Justin Sitler was the recipient this fall of a $300 Norris Bowan scholarship from Camrose Association for Community Living, which he used to pay for driver training education. The scholarship was started 20 years ago by Muriel Rieger, who decided at that time people with disabilities needed to have an opportunity to learn. Presenting the scholarship to Justin, who plans to attend Augustana next year and take open studies classes in drama and writing was CAFCL chief executive officer Esther McDonald.
PEN POINTS by Berdie Fowler
Send messages of love, not hate! For the last two weeks, the name and picture of Amanda Todd has appeared often in national television newscasts and daily newspapers. Her story has been discussed in the House of Commons, by columnists across the nation, and over cups of coffee everywhere, including our own community. Amanda was the 15-year-old girl of Coquitlam, B.C., who killed herself because she could no longer stand being the subject of cyber-bullying. The notes she posted revealed that she felt there was no one to whom she could turn for help and that suicide was the only escape. Perhaps that was a correct assumption as one news item stated that at least once she had been beaten in the presence of witnesses which included teachers and then left battered in a ditch to be found later by her father. Shocking Canadian bullying statistics are not new. A child is bullied every 20 seconds in Canada. According to the Canadian Institute of Health Research, Canada has the 9th highest rate of bullying in the 13-year-olds category on a scale of 35 countries. At least one in three adolescent students in Canada has reported being bullied. Statistics Canada tells us that any participation in bullying increases risk of suicidal ideas in youth. The rate of discrimination among heterosexual youth is only one-third of that among youth identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans-identified, queer or questioning (LGBTQ) or children being raised in families with same sex parents. While faceless statistical information does not motivate us to act, the publicized suicide of a single, identified, distressed, pathetically lonely and frightened youth may. Even when we know that children are killing themselves because they are being bullied, what should we do? What can we do? Melanie Barwick is a registered psychologist at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. She says, “As a scientist, I understand that the first line of defence in prevention and treatment is to understand the root causes of negative or unhealthy behaviour, poor mental health or illness. Only if you know the cause or contributing factors can you tackle the problem. But what do you do when the complexity of the problem suggests a variety of causes?” Barwick goes on to ask: “Is this only a bullying issue? Is this a sign of increasing violence in our younger generation. Is this evidence of poor moral development or sociopathy, perhaps?” She suggests that maybe youngsters are just as they have always been but that “social media tools have increased the spread and speed at which hateful behaviour is spun around the world.” It is an accepted fact that children tend to imitate the behaviour of adults and are influenced by the attitude of parents. It is therefore incumbent upon parents, teachers and all adults to be living examples of tolerance, understanding and respectful of differences of others and sensitive to their feelings. All adults, especially parents, also need to be aware of the inexperience and immature judgment of youth as well as their naturally impetuous behaviours and therefore be ever mindful of the need to keep in close touch by working and playing together and talking about compassion, equality, bullying and the risks associated with cyberspace communication. Bullying could be stopped and lives saved if everyone, youth and adults, sent messages of love and encouragement, not hate.

Confusion about magic show The Camrose Boys and Girls Club has offered valuable programs and services to children and youth in Camrose and district since 1989. As a charitable not-for-profit organization, we rely heavily on fund-raising and community contributions and are grateful for the support we have received. For the past seven years, Pro Theatre Entertainment, a company independent of the Camrose Boys and Girls Club, has offered a Magic Show in Camrose in support of the Camrose Boys and Girls Club. Pro Theatre Entertainment travels across the country selecting nonprofit agencies to benefit from their show. They raise funds through selling tickets and advertising (in their program) to local businesses and citizens. The tickets purchased are usually donated back and passed on to community family and youth serving organizations to be distributed at no cost to families and children (usually around 250) that may not otherwise be able to participate in this fun family event. The children and youth served through the Camrose Boys and Girls Club look forward to the Magic Show every year. A portion of the proceeds raised by Pro Theatre Entertainment is donated to the Camrose Boys and Girls Club to support our ongoing programming for children and youth. We would like to take this opportunity to address some confusion and concerns that have been brought to our attention regarding the Magic Show. The location of the Magic Show has been changed. Some of the tickets printed have the wrong location on them. The Magic Show will be held at the
Camrose Resort Casino in their Convention Centre on October 24th at 7:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door. Furthermore, we understand that due to technical difficulties experienced by Pro Theatre Entertainment, some of the arrangements made with individuals for ticket purchases have not been followed through on as agreed. The Camrose Boys and Girls Club would like to apologize for any confusion and or inconvenience that you may have experienced around these concerns and we thank you for your patience. Because the Camrose Boys and Girls Club does not have involvement in these operations, we ask that you contact Vern or Murray with Pro Theater Entertainment directly (705-478-6309) if you have questions or concerns. They will be happy to help you. We would like to thank the local businesses and individuals who have supported Camrose Boys and Girls Club through purchasing advertising or tickets for the Magic Show. We would also like to thank Pro Theatre Entertainment for its support of the Camrose Boys and Girls Club for the past seven years. Rees James, Camrose What does the future hold? If you imagine the future, what does it look like? Is the future you see dependent on oil? Some say that we've lived for millennia without it, surely we can live without again. In learning about the peak oil crisis, I have heard many people ask, "Does it mean we all need to be farmers?" I don't think so. Rather, I think it means that we begin taking back responsibility over our own lives and our own communities. What are the things that we are "response-able" for? Are we responsible for the clothes we wear? The food we eat? How important is it to be responsible for these things? Erich Fromm wrote of preWWII German society as a people free from belonging to a social order. He believed that it was because Germans were not accountable to each other that so many submitted to an authority. That next authority was the Nazi regime. Fromm's obser-
vation warns us that if we are not responsible for the wellbeing of our neighbour, our "freedom" from belonging to each other will overwhelm us and we will submit to the next authority. At what risk? Do you live in a free-frombelonging society? What is the authority to which we presently submit? What would your life look like if you took responsibility for your neighbour, perhaps a stranger? What if they did the same for you? Now, what does your future look like? The topic of Hydraulic Fracturing is an increasingly controversial subject. Why? Perhaps because it is both a water and a livelihood issue. Many Albertans work in the oil and gas industry; it is how they support their families. So, arguments against the industry are personal because one's livelihood – and the livelihood of one's children – seem at stake. Yet, there are also many Albertans who have been dehumanized by this same industry. Their stories are chilling – of burned skin, methane water, sickly animals, sickly children. Naturally, these Albertans want to see a change, if not a moratorium, on the process of fracking. Others sit somewhere in the middle, uncertain between which side is "right". Most haven't even heard about the process. The fracking issue pits livelihood against livelihood. It is no surprise that these "sides" are so alienated from each other. So where do we go from here? How do we speak to each other when one is so hurt and when another must risk "everything?" We create a space where all sides simply share a meal and their stories. Even in this issue, in this province, the commonalities between our stories far outweigh the differences. When we listen to our neighbour's story, we begin to be responsible for their well-being. And when we do this, we begin to have the future for which we all hope. On November 2 and 3, Augustana hosts this common space. Please join us and register at http://frackingab.wordpress.com "Will we get the future we plan for?" I don't know, will you? Carmelle Mohr Camrose
County revisits shelterbelt setbacks By Murray Green
Camrose County revisited the setback needed for planting shelterbelts within the road allowances and at intersections. Members of the municipal planning commission reviewed the shelterbelt setback requirements last summer. After the discussion, it was agreed that an amendment should be presented to council for discussion. The original setback was created in alignment with provincial high-
way policies and public works policies. Public works and agricultural services are concerned with the setback because it can cause snow drifting across the road in winter, it reduces sight lines for vehicles and wildlife on edges of roads and approaches, it reduces sight lines for vehicles at intersections, and the current bylaw is designed for 90 km/h (engineering 10 km/h higher than posted).
The current policy states that shelterbelts shall be planted no closer than 30 metres (100 feet) to a main road intersection, and no closer than three metres (10 feet) to an internal subdivision road. Council added that it shall be 10 metres from a regular road allowance, which is not close to an intersection. The amended bylaw was given first reading and a public hearing will be held at council.

Edith Viola Johnson
Julia Chytracek (nee Darlington) Norman Allan Berg January 9, 1930 – October 14, 2012 Norman was born in Mannville, AB on January 9, 1930. He was the youngest of seven children born to Gus and Bessie Berg. He went to Pathfinder School and completed high school in Myrnam. Norm left home when he was 19 to pursue a career in the oilfield. He worked 13 years for Regent Drilling where he “roughnecked and toolpushed” his way across western Canada. On July 15, 1952, Norman married Julia Ryan, “a local girl from just down the road”. Norman and Julia raised five children: Jim, Diane, Bryan, Lorne and Kevin. Norman and Julia gained great pleasure in watching the family grow, which now includes 11 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. In 1961, Norman purchased a half section of land northeast of Bawlf where he and the family began farming. To help pay the bills, Norman attended auctioneer school and began auctioneering in several auction marts in the area. He eventually started Berg’s Auction Service and continued auctioneering throughout his life. He greatly enjoyed the people he met at his sales and always had a story to coax out that last bid. Norman and Julia retired from farming in 1999 and moved to Camrose. He enjoyed travelling with Julia, visiting with family and friends and was continually organizing “just one more last auction sale”! Norman was strongly involved in the Bawlf community and was leader of the Bawlf 4-H club for 10 years. He coached numerous minor and senior hockey teams in the Camrose County Hockey League and also coached minor baseball teams. Norman was a founding director of the Ankerton Gas Co-op and the Bawlf Recreation Association. He was also active with the Bawlf Lions, the Bawlf Legion and the Bawlf Co-op. Norman passed away on Sunday, October 14, 2012 at the age of 82 years. He is survived by his loving wife Julia; one daughter Diane (Lewis) Noel; four sons Jim (Lois Jones), Bryan (Nancy), Lorne (Laura) and Kevin (Sonia); 11 grandchildren Sarah, Scott, Jordon, Gordon, Aundrea, Pamela, Allison, Eric, Colin, Olivia and Carson; one great-granddaughter Zoey; one brother Glen Berg; two sisters Laura (Bob) Woods and Hazel (Dick) Pilger. Norman was predeceased by his parents; one sister Grace Frost; and two brothers George and Howard. A time of fellowship and refreshments was held on Thursday, October 18, 2012 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. from Bawlf Community Hall. Memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to Camrose and District Hospice Society or to a charity of one’s choice. To send condolences please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Julia Chytracek nee Darlington of Camrose, formerly of Eckville, passed away on Monday, October 15, 2012 at the age of 28 years. Julia was born January 21, 1984 in Red Deer and was schooled in Eckville. She furthered her education at Augustana University College in Camrose where she majored in Phys. Ed. and minored in Drama. While at Augustana she was a resident assistant, played college volleyball and met the love of her life Jon, whom she married August 18, 2007. Shortly after marrying, Julia and Jon had the opportunity to travel to Korea to teach English. One of Julia’s greatest passions was to teach, and she was fulfilled doing this. In 2008, she was accepted at Concordia University College and received a Bachelor of Education degree in 2010. On April 4, 2011 they were blessed with a son, Noah Jonathan James. Becoming parents was another lifelong dream that they realized together. Julia’s life was always full of activities. She was a very big part of every community she lived in and represented them and her family with pride and joy. She was honoured to represent the Shorthorn Cattle Association and the family farm by becoming the Alberta Shorthorn Lassie for two years. It did not take long for Julia to leave a lasting impact on people with her intense warmth, love and giant smile. She is survived by her loving husband Jon, son Noah, her parents Bill and Brenda Darlington, sisters April (Deryk) Legault, Nicole, Melanie (Harland Lugt), her special niece Autumn Legault, father and mother in-law Mark and Brandi Chytracek, sister in-law Amanda (Brendin) Huculuck and brother-in-law David (Jessi Tomiyama). She is also survived by her maternal grandmother Alma Walker, Jon’s grandfather Frank and Nikki Schmitt and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. We will always remember her infectious smile that brightened a room and her absolute zest for life. Julia brought so much light, love, and joy to everyone she encountered, and will continue to do so through her memory. She was an angel sent from above. She will be forever missed, never forgotten and always loved. Funeral services were held on Monday, October 22, 2012 at 2:00 p.m., from Bethel Lutheran Church with Rev. Kristian Wold officiating. Cremation has taken place. In Julia’s memory, donations can be made to a trust account under Chytracek Family Trust at Servus Credit Union or CIBC. In loving memory of
Joseph Adams April 28, 1947 – October 15, 2009 If I listen really close In the silence of the night, I hear your voice comforting me And saying that you’re alright. But it’s often hard to understand Why certain things must be, And the reasons why they happen Are so often hard to see. But I find comfort in the knowledge That God is always there, To keep the one I loved so much Forever in His care. Forever loved and sadly missed, Alice and families

BRCF pays tribute to Alan and Valerie Fielding Alan and Valerie Fielding were recognized at the Battle River Community Foundation's ninth annual Community Builders' Dinner Oct. 19 for the work they have done in making Camrose a better place in which to live. "It is apparent from the capacity crowd gathered here this evening that Alan and Valerie are well-respected in this community for their contributions and achievements," said Battle River Community Foundation board chair Blain Fowler. "We are indeed fortunate that they chose to locate in Camrose and raise their family here. For over 40 years, the Fieldings have helped to make Camrose a much better place in which to live." Fowler said the Fieldings' outstanding record of community service has been delivered without any fanfare or seeking recognition of any kind. "They have served unselfishly because they thought it was the right thing to do." Alan and Valerie consider service to others to be an essential part of their lives. "My parents believed in helping others and making contributions to the community," said Alan. "They instilled that in me from an early age." The Fieldings have established a pair of endowment funds with the Battle River Community Foundation. Their own, the Alan and Valerie Fielding fund, directs proceeds to whatever causes
BRCF endowments growing The Battle River Community Foundation has accumulated endowments of more than $6.7 since its inception in 1995. "Even in these difficult times, giving to our Foundation still remains a high priority in the hearts and minds of the citizens of Camrose, and all those who reside in the Battle River Watershed," said Battle River Community Foundation board chair Blain Fowler. The amount of grants handed out by the Foundation to worthwhile projects in the communities the Battle River Community Foundation serves is more than $1.6 million. Battle River Community Foundation will be the beneficiary of Zetsen Master Builders' next charity construction project. The Camrose business will be teaming up with its regular building suppliers and construction trades to build a house in the city at more or less cost, then donating proceeds from the sale of that house. "Garry Zetsen and Kevin Lindholm of Zetsen Master Builders have always been strong dependable supporters of the Battle River Community Foundation," said Fowler. "They are true community builders in every sense."

require assistance on an annual basis, while the Les and Bobbie Fielding fund, established in honour of Alan's parents, assists music programs. Alan said he thinks about all the contributions, great and small, that have been made by people to make Camrose a better place. "It is about community, it is about making a better life for our
families. It is having time for our kids, of whom Valerie and I of course are immensely proud." Alan believes that the things that make a great community are the founding principles of our constitution – peace, order and good government – as well as respect and tolerance. "We live under a system of law, we don't live under a system
of violence or oppression or the law of the jungle. I think every day we should just remember how fortunate we are to be living in a community, a province, a country like ours." Alan said while he and Valerie have had the opportunity to do a good amount of travelling, they are always happy to get back home.
"We just feel that this is home and this is where we want to be. It is the people, the community, just the atmosphere of being here that makes it so special." The Fieldings have served on the boards of numerous community organizations. Alan is current president of Sahakarini, which undertakes international development projects, and has been a dedicated member of the board for such respected groups as the Battle River Community Foundation, the Battle River Credit Union, and The Bethany Group. He was involved in fundraising for a chapel at Augustana and has been a longtime member of the Rotary Club. Valerie has been involved in Sahakarini as well as the Camrose International Institute, the Camrose and District Music Festival, Kaleidoscope for Kids, and Neighbor Aid. Battle River Credit Union honoured the Fieldings at the dinner by handing over a cheque to the Battle River Community Foundation in the amount of $10,000 and by committing a pledge of an annual gift of $5,000 to the Valerie and Alan Fielding Fund. "These donations recognize your commitment and love for this area, and respective ability to make such a difference in your personal and your professional lives," said Battle River Credit Union director Ron Pilger, when making the presentation.

he has a strong commitment to social justice, backed up by a nuanced grasp of international development issues." – Gail Stolee.
"His (Alan's) method of running a meeting should be, in my opinion, more widely adopted. No fluff – just a definite let's get it done attitude. He comes to every business meeting immensely prepared. He leads but allows all of us to express opinion. Alan makes everyone feel valued." – Ron Pilger, member of the Battle River Credit Union board of directors.
"They are community makers, rather than community breakers or community takers. Retirement has not slowed down either he or Valerie in their service to the community." – Judge Harry Gaede.
"Alan, it is in part your commitment and ability that has helped the Battle River Credit Union to such success. You helped set the culture, tone and vision of the organization. Your skill has helped us to become a corporate citizen of significance in terms of employment, and giving back to each community we serve." – Ron Pilger. "Having friends is now being recognized as a necessity for a healthy life. You two have always struck me as exceptionally healthy. You have many friends." – Gail Stolee. "You are welcoming, accepting, interested, interesting and always ready to engage warmly and graciously with others wherever you may be. We are all your friends but you have nurtured a circle of friendship that goes around the world, including the people you have met or helped, whether in Europe or through
"As their circumstances improved so did their largess. I know they give generously of both time and money to the university, their church, and many charitable organizations, including this one, and to helping persons in need." – Judge Harry Gaede.

your development work with Sahakarini and the Camrose International Institute in Ghana, India, Guatemala, Brazil and elsewhere." – Gail Stolee. "If you are a friend of the Fieldings that friendship can often turn into working on a common cause. I seem to recall our first contact with Sahakarini being in Alan's company. He said it was a Christmas gathering and it was, but 14 Christmases later, many of them spent in nearly full-time commitment, he is still there and so are we. In fact, for almost 30 years, Alan has worked and provided leadership to Sahakarini because he is not only a distinguished lawyer,
"Their children carry on the legacy of giving and community building that suffuses the history of this wonderful family." – Judge Harry Gaede. "The V in Valerie should stand for Joie de vivre, this love of life, this joy in life." – Dittmar Mundel. "The reason that Valerie didn't retire until a few years ago is that every time she was asked, 'could you just maybe teach this course or could you maybe just do this one more time,' Valerie would always say yes." – Dittmar Mundel. "One of the most important things in supporting the arts is simply being there. So when we look around at who is present or at the public lectures over at
Augustana, Alan and Valerie and some of the rest of you at the front table are almost always there." – Dittmar Mundel. "Alan believes deeply in altruism and passing that on to another generation. So very often I have found Alan inviting students, for example, to Sahakarini dinners or other dinners, giving them free tickets so they can experience what it is like to actually get involved in overseas issues. It is amazing what has happened to some of the students as a result of that." – Dittmar Mundel. "One of my father's favourite adopted sayings was rather than 'give until it hurts,' 'give until it feels good.' This guided my parents' thinking when it came to philanthropy and community." – Arianne Fielding, daughter. "Asking for money is not something that my father was particularly comfortable with. He was known to buy a book of raffle tickets himself rather than peddle them to his friends and neighbours. My mother, however, had no qualms with chasing up unsuspecting local businesses and individuals to donate to the Camrose Music Festival or Neighbor Aid or the Camrose International Institute, or whatever cause she was fund-raising for. Much like her driving, this was apparently the 'European Way,' which appears to translate as being more direct than most of us inhibited Camrosians, and it worked!" – Arianne Fielding, daughter.

Dodge Ram Heavy Duties All the power you need By Dan Jensen
The new Dodge Ram heavy duty trucks at Camrose Chrysler know the meaning of hard work. Laramie Limited 2500 models come standard with a 5.7 litre HEMI VVT V-8, which delivers 383 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 400 lb.-ft of torque. Laramie Limited 3500 models come standard with a 6.7 litre Cummins Turbo Diesel that produces 350 horsepower and 800 lb.-ft. of torque. "It is the most durable and reliable engine in its class," said Camrose Chrysler sales manager Denis Mercier. The Cummins Turbo is backed by a choice of a standard, class-exclusive G56 six-speed manual transmission, or an available six-speed automatic. The six-speed manual has an ultra-low first gear ratio, which makes it ideal for heavy hauling requirements, while the sixspeed automatic offers ease of driveability and towing. The 5.7 litre V-8 is matched to a new heavy-duty six-speed automatic transmission and offers Electric Range Select, which provides a unique shift schedule that minimizes gear hunting while towing heavy loads, and provides automatic downshifting capability when decelerating. Transfer cases available with the Ram heavy duties include the NV271, a manual unit, and the NV273, which offers electric shift-on-the-fly. Look as good as they perform The Ram Laramie Limited heavy duties look as good as they perform, thanks to 17-inch polished aluminum wheels, chrome bodyside mouldings, and chrome or body-coloured front and rear bumpers with bright white and bright silver or black and mineral grey metallic paint. Wheelbases stretch from 149 inches on the crew cab to 160.5 inches on the mega cab. To accommodate cooling requirements of the 6.7 litre Cummins, the grille opening is larger than the lightduty grille. The larger grille incorporates a taller hood that includes louvres on each side. Access to the front winch and tow hooks led to the unique bumper design. The ingenious RamBox cargo management system consists of two large dry, lockable, illuminated and drainable side-bed bins, an adjustable cargo bed divider/extender, cargo rails and moveable tie-down cleats. Assets available from Mopar, like the fishingand hunting-friendly RamBox holster, only sweeten the ride. The tailgate is sculpted for air flow, incorporating a spoiler in the upper part of the sheet metal. The tailgate includes a lift-assist feature that makes raising and lowering a one-hand operation. Standard bed-rail protection is included with the Laramie Limited cargo boxes.
Towing ability Ram Laramie Limited heavy duties have what it takes to get the job done, with an exceptional 10,319 kg maximum towing capability, as well as standard available assets like the Class IV hitch receiver, tow/haul mode, fifth wheel hitches from Mopar and ParkView rear back-up camera. "The impressive torque, combined with the five-year, 100,000 km powertrain warranty and Cummins' proven reputation for reliability are a direct response to the high expectations of customers," said Mercier. The backbone of the 2012 Ram heavy duties is a hydro-formed, fully boxed frame with advanced torsional rigidity and stiffness. A coil-spring suspension setup is used in the front of the vehicle, while the multi-level spring design is maintained in the rear for heavy-duty capability. Front and rear shocks and springs are tuned for optimum ride quality and capability. Standard exhaust brakes (on diesel models) reduce brake fade, prolong brake life and provide confidence and
safety when hauling heavy loads on downhill grades. Large front (360 mm) and rear (358 mm) brakes with integrated anti-lock brake system increase brake life and braking stability. Trailer brake control information on the Laramie Limited is conveniently displayed in the electronic vehicle information centre, which is standard on all models. Other tow-friendly John Wigston features include trailer-tow Camrose Chrysler mirrors with integrated turn signals, memory function and puddle lamps. Comfortable interior The Ram Laramie Limited pampers the driver and occupants with Natura Plus full-leather seating, piano black components and creature comforts like dual-zone temperature controls, heated steering wheel, and electronics that take their cues from high-end audio and communications systems. From headroom to armrest to footwell, it is a ride with a comfort level that only Ram duty can deliver. Six-ring instrumentation keeps track of vehicle functions, while many controls are arrayed in the centre stack, for easy access to buttons and knobs. The Ram mega cab has the most interior volume of any truck in its class, giving you more than enough space to securely haul large boxes. When the more-than-average rear leg room isn't needed, mega capability comes into work or play. These rear seats fold flat, letting you transport large items with zero hassles getting it all in or out. Class-exclusive in-floor storage bins (on crew cabs) are perfect for out-of-sight storage when you need it. They are waterproof and drainable for keeping things cool.
You can see the 2012 Dodge Ram Heavy Duties at Camrose Chrysler, on Highway 13 East. Phone 780-672-2476 or toll free 1-800-563-4202 and ask for a member of the friendly sales team.

By Murray Green The Camrose Composite High School senior girls' volleyball team doesn't want to be known as just the hosts for the 3A provincials. The Trojans want to earn the right to be at the championships. With a low member team, CCHS is learning fast and gaining valuable experience with each set. "We have good basic skills and are a well-rounded team. We have good players and we don't have weak spots, as far as players," said Jennifer Laskosky, a Grade 12 player on the squad. "Our coach (her dad Bryan) has been telling us all year that we need more grit. We need to have that desire to always want to win. If we become a team that believes we can't lose, we will be tough to beat when provincials come. The Trojans are 4-3 in regular season play. "We look at Sylvan Lake as the team to beat because they are well-rounded too. Lacombe is pretty good, but I think Sylvan Lake is a little better," said Jennifer. "It is a good thing to know that we are going to provincials because we can focus on that. We know that our team has to work harder to prove we got to provincials based on our skills, rather than just hosting it." Hosting provincials is a big commitment for the team. "This is a great opportunity to be in provincials. We are going to have to work harder and give a little more than we are used to in order to compete at a higher level," Jennifer said, who wants to do well in her last year at CCHS. "It's important for me because volleyball is a big part of my life and this is the last season. The team has six Grade 12 players and two Grade 11 players. "Since we have such a small group, it is easier to stay together and bond. It gives us more time to spend in practices on improving our skills and also more one-on-one time with the coaches. All players receive more playing time and that gives everyone more experience," added Jennifer. "We went to Stettler with only seven players, so those who don't play as much received valuable playing experience. When you play more, you learn the area that you need to improve on." CCHS has placed second twice, third and fourth in tournaments. "We came in second at the SAIT and Spruce Grove tournaments. We host our own tournament on the first weekend in November," said Jennifer. "It will be good to play in front of a big home crowd and get used to that for provincials. Having a crowd behind you makes you want to play better. It can make you nervous, but it's good to experience that in the tournament to prepare for provincials."

Kodiaks fall short of stealing Accepting New Patients Appointments Available two points from top Bandits November (780)672-3033
By Murray Green The Brooks Bandits scored five goals in the opening period and outshot the Camrose Kodiaks 20-4 in the most lopsided 20 minutes of hockey local fans have witnessed at the EnCana Arena in a long time, Oct. 14. But, after the smoke cleared in the dressing room between periods, the Kodiaks came out fired up and scored four straight goals to end the game 5-4 in Brooks' favour. "Our preparation is the biggest thing we have to work on. We have a lot of good young players on the team this year, so we have the talent to win," said defenceman Josh Smith. "We came out hard in the second and third periods and showed we can play with them. If we had been prepared at the start, we would have had a different result." Tanner MacMaster led the charge with two goals while Jonathan Lashyn and Brett Njaa chipped in with a goal and an assist each. Camrose even outshot Brooks 13-6 in the final period as they tried to tie the game. "It's October, and it is a good thing that we learn to play a full game now, rather than in the playoffs," Josh said. "We have the drive to win and to keep getting better. It showed a lot of character that we were able to come back. It not only showed the fans we can play, but it brought the whole team closer together. We felt that rush of coming back and it felt good." Brooks outshot the Kodiaks 42-27 in the game. Matt Gib-
ney started the game in net for Camrose, stopping six of nine shots. Devin McDonald turned away 31 of 33 shots to hold his team in the game. "We are going to focus on the positive things out of the Brooks game and not dwell on the negatives," added Smith. "My first year in the WHL we had a pretty young team too. It is a matter of playing the young guys to get them more experience and giving them confidence. They are going to make mistakes, but if you are too hard on them they are going to crack. We have to keep their confidence up, stay positive and focused." Scoring a few more goals has helped the Kodiaks. "We are working on creating more offence. I think if we come out hard in the first it will show that we want to win," said Josh. "Our practices are going really well and we are cycling the puck better. We are taking more shots instead of always passing." The defenceman is enjoying his stay in Camrose. "When I came here last year I was scoring goals and was having fun. This year, I'm building on that and having fun playing with the young guys. There is not a lot of difference between the WHL and this league, maybe a couple of players depth wise. The atmosphere is certainly better here." MacMaster scored twice in the second period for the Kodiaks as they doused the Drumheller Dragons 3-2 on Oct. 13. In the first, the teams
exchanged goals with Kieran O'Neil notching the Camrose tally. The Dragons added a goal in the last frame, but the Kodiaks snuffed out the late spark from Drumheller. Matt made 25 out of 27 saves in the Camrose net. The Kodiaks had the edge, 28-27, in shots on goal. Camrose heads off on a four- game road series before playing at home on Nov. 2 when the Olds Grizzlys return to the EnCana Arena. The Kodiaks also take on the Calgary Canucks on Nov. 3 in a home contest. Both games start at 7:30 p.m.

Camrose goaltender Devin McDonald, above, kept the game between the Kodiaks and the Bandits close with numerous saves. Brooks built up a 5-0 lead before the Kodiaks fought back to make it a 5-4 game.

With great anticipation, the Sweet Lowdown band will be bringing its popular country bluegrass style of music to the Rose City Roots Music Society concert series. The band will play on the Scalliwags Pub and Rum Bar stage on Saturday, Oct. 27 beginning at 8 p.m. Fresh from a recent tour of the United States, Sweet Lowdown is excited to be touring in Alberta again. The trio, based in Victoria, BC, of Amanda Blied on guitar, Shanti Bremer on banjo and Miriam Sonstenes on fiddle formed a band four years ago to create music inspired by their love of old time, folk, blues, bluegrass and other forms of roots music. "We play traditional music with a bluegrass style and we enjoy writing our own music," said Amanda. "We are rooted in those traditions, but we are not bound by them either." Amanda said the three musicians met in the music community on the island. "We began in 2008, when Shanti and I started performing together as an old time duo," she said. "It is a vibrant music community and we met through music parties and jams." Two years later they added fiddler Miriam into the group. The addition of a fiddle completed the old time trio sound, and a third voice added another layer to the group's vocals. The band earned the M Award for Favourite Roots/World Music Group by Vancouver Island’s Monday Magazine. This led to a recording session. "In January 2011, we traveled by train to Toronto to record our debut album. It was quite an experience to go by train and see the country," said Amanda. "This past May, we recorded another album. However, I don't know if it will be ready to be released by the time we hit Camrose. It is in production right now. We will be playing music from both albums and share the new music with Camrose fans." The Sweet Lowdown’s style combines all three musicians' strong background on instruments playing with excellent singing and quality song writing. Amanda has travelled across Canada and throughout the southern states, tracing the roots of music about which she is passionate. This is evident in the old time feel she brings to her guitar playing. "We are happy that people have really been following our kind of music," added Amanda. "Old time and bluegrass fans already like it. We are finding that we are reeling in others who are listening to it and are now enjoying it as well. They are discovering our genre, which is a blend of several, and we feel that we can offer something for everyone." Continued on page 23

The Sweet Lowdown describes its music as roots and they will fit in with the local series in Camrose. "It means a catch-all phrase in my mind for a lot of traditional music." "We love playing in those small intimate venues like Scalliwags. We learned to play music in those house or natural settings," said Amanda. "It makes us feel right at home. It's comfortable and we can really connect with our audience."

Camrose Police Services walk for Special Olympics athletes By Murray Green
Police forces throughout Canada will be walking or running to help raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics. Here in our area, the Camrose Police Service will join Special Olympic athletes in walking from the station to, Walmart on Thursday, Oct. 25 beginning at 10 a.m. "It is the 25th anniversary of the working relationship between Special Olympics and the Law Enforcement Torch Relay," said Stacy Wolbeck, fundraising coordinator of Special Olympics Camrose. "It isn't called the torch relay as such now," added Cst. Matthew Wilton. "However, it does signify police agencies assisting their local Special Olympics in raising funds. It started as a torch run and has expanded to multiple fundraising activities throughout the year using police officers as volunteers in whatever possible way. We are using this event to re-establish our relationship with Special Olympics." Police members will be walking to make the connection with the anniversary of the relay. "We will have vehicles with lights, leading the walk along 48 Avenue as we head over to Walmart. Dozens of athletes and volunteers will join us. Once we are there, we will be selling shoe laces with the proceeds going to Special Olympics, as well as collecting personal donations," explained Cst. Wilton. "We will be at Walmart until about 4 p.m."
The police members will also be helping at the Special Olympics barbecue on Saturday, Nov. 3, during the Canadian Tire grand opening celebrations. "Canadian Tire has graciously allowed us to have a barbecue and to be part of the celebration. The proceeds from the barbecue will go to the Special Olympic programs," said Cst. Wilton. "We have nothing concrete yet, but we will have some other activities planned as we re-establish our relationship with athletes so they can continue to participate in the sports or activities they do." Special Olympics Camrose currently has two softball teams, a bowling group and a swimming program in place for athletes. "We provide sports participation for athletes and have operated since 1980," explained Stacy. "This next year is a special time for us because the Alberta Special Olympic Games will be hosting a spring event and will host winter sports in Red Deer and Edmonton. "We are looking into sending almost all of our athletes. Some athletes haven't been involved in a big event like this in a long time because of a lack of funds, coaches and volunteers." Special Olympics Camrose has a group of dedicated coaches who are working hard with the athletes to prepare them for higher competition. "We would like to raise $30,000 to be in a position to send everyone who wants to go," added Stacy. "That is double
our operating costs, but there is a lot of action for Special Olympic events this coming year and we want to be part of it. We have 40 athletes in bowling, 10 in swimming and about 22 in softball. We have about 65 athletes who potentially could go to the Games. That is a major fund-raising project over and above our regular costs of renting facilities. We are very excited for this partnership to help us. In order to get an athlete to the Summer Games, we are starting an adopt an athlete program where someone can sponsor an athlete for $125. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

By Murray Green This year's Augustana Vikings has already experienced the highs and lows of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference season. The Vikings celebrated last year’s championship banner raising in the EnCana Arena with a 7-2 victory over the Portage Voyageurs. However, when the teams switched locations, Portage emerged with two points in a 5-4 match on Oct. 13. "We were pretty amped up for the opening game. The banner was raised and it brought back memories from last year," said forward Kenny Bradley. "Now we have to leave that in the past and focus on this year. We had a good first game." After an even opening period where both squads notched two goals, Portage went to work by adding a pair of tallies in the second. Augustana fought back in the third by scoring two of the three goals, but it wasn't enough to garner any points. "In the second game we worked hard, but not smart. We didn't back check hard enough and didn't pick up the man," said Kenny. "We shouldn't lose a game when we score four goals. We need to keep the goals against to two or under every game." Adam Johnson was the star of the game with a goal and an assist for the Vikings. Brendan Lamb chipped in with two assists on offence. "We dominated the play for most of the game and the play was in their end," added Kenny. "We took some bad penalties and they received some lucky bounces. Our defensive zone coverage was poor. We were thinking all offence and no one was providing the defensive back checking and it cost us." Augustana fired 37 shots at the Voyageurs' net, but Portage netminder Kirby Halcrow was stellar in making 33 saves. Vikings' goalie Joel Danyluk made 13 of 17 saves and Paul Kolida turned away nine of 10 shots. "We had a couple of breakaways that we could have finished on, but he made some pretty good saves too," said Kenny. "He is a big goalie and we didn't make him move from side to side as much as we should have. We made him look big by shooting right at him." The Vikings host the SAIT Trojans on Oct. 27, and the NAIT Ooks on Nov. 1 starting at 7:30 p.m. Volleyball Augustana's regular season in volleyball begins on Oct. 26 when the Keyano Huskies visit the Rose City. The women's match begins at 6 p.m. and the men follow at 8 p.m. The same two colleges battle again the next day with start times of 1 and 3 p.m. at Augustana.

Bergen met Spartan fitness challenge By Murray Green Michael Bergen of Camrose wanted a new challenge and he certainly received it in the Spartan Fitness Challenge in Calgary. The 18-year-old entered the Spartan event on Aug. 18 to face a tough fitness task of more than just running. "They have three events called the sprint, beast and super beast and the events are all different lengths," explained Michael. "The sprint is five kilometres through hills, with obstacles set up in the way. You have to carry sand bags up and down hills, pull up tires and run through a mud hole." Michael trained for the event for three months at Adrenaline Gym to prepare for the Spartan challenge. "I mostly had cardio and strength training the first two months. In the last month, I had more specific training for obstacles, but I didn't know what those obstacles would be ahead of time," said Michael. The local athlete finished in 169 place out of 3,696 competitors. It took him just over 35 minutes to complete the course. "I thought that finish was alright, considering it was my first Spartan race," Michael said. "I plan on entering more than one next year. I entered with my sister Crystal, who was the one that encouraged me to enter the event. Her boy friend and his friends also competed." Michael has entered runs before, but felt he wanted to test his endurance in another way. "I was looking for something a little more fun than just running. It is more difficult too. You can be running and then you have to climb a wall. It is fun when you have a different scenery or task to perform. I wanted a test that was more than just endurance." If Michael had to change his training plans, he would add more endurance. "I found myself getting tired half way through the race. I need to pace myself better because I wasn't expecting as many hills. Towards the end there were more obstacles, so you can't tire yourself out on the hills," he added. "Right now, I am doing more strength training and four months before the first event I will focus mainly on endurance. I hope to shave a few minutes off my time in the next event." Michael also runs in the river valley to prepare him for the hills in the event. "Spartan races are held in each state in the United States, about six in Canada and it is popular around the world. It would be good to enter events and travel at the same time." He plans to enter one in Europe next year.

Good times have never seemed so good for this Neil Diamond impersonator. Joey Purpura's vocal impersonation of the famous singer will be reachin' out and touchin' you as he brings his show to the Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion on Saturday, Nov. 10. "I had no idea how beloved Diamond is. And I had no idea how powerful his music was – and still is – to people," Joey said. Seeing Diamond fans light up and seeing audience members smile or cry when they hear his ballads. Joey said this is a satisfying part of his job. "Response is so good that I always get invited back wherever I perform," he said. It began when he went to a karaoke night. "I was introduced to karaoke about 12 years ago by a friend. I took to it immediately, especially since I could now work on vocal impersonations." To purchase tickets for the show, drop in at the office at 570348 Avenue or call 780-672-3325.

About Time Productions presents Christmas by the Fire Submitted by Charlene Brown
“Wrapping Christmas presents” was the status of a friend on Facebook just the other day! I thought to myself ‘are you crazy, it’s the middle of October and I haven’t even got caught up from school starting’? Then I realized that my friend was a genius. What a better way to bring warmth and fun into one’s day than to think about the joy of Christmas and giving to others. Really there are two focal points in most people’s year; sum-
mer holidays and Christmas! And when one thinks about Christmas it’s hard to not start humming your favourite holiday tune. Derric Johnson, in his book, The Wonder of Christmas states “If the words tell us how to believe, then the music tells us how to feel.” So it is never too early to start thinking about Christmas and I would like to offer this wonderful opportunity, provided by About Time Productions, for you to consider. On December 16 at 7:00
p.m., come to the Bailey Theatre and enjoy “Christmas by the Fire, songs and stories with a jazzy twist.” The evening will include familiar holiday tunes and maybe some new gems, all infused with a little jazz and big band flavor. To complement the music we will weave through some holiday message via the wonderful story telling of Cathie Johnson. Christmas by the Fire features a great collaboration of local musicians, both professional and
student. Featured vocalists are Charlene Brown, Carolyn Olson and members of Blue Thistle Deanna Didriksen, Michelle Kennedy Hawkins and Tova Olson. Our talented instrumentalists include Lucas Brown, John McCune, Curtis Mokry, Brad Mokry, Lael Olson, Julia Wiewel and our band leader and pianist Tova Olson. Tickets for this event go on sale October 25 and will be available at the Bailey Theatre box office. Contact the box office by
phone at 780-672-5510 or online at baileytheatre.com. Ticket prices include a dessert from a wonderful selection provided by Malorie’s Cakes and Catering. Beverages will be available for sale before the concert and during intermission. Seating is available at tables on the main floor, or in theatre arrangement for the balcony. This is a great Christmas party or gift option so we encourage you to buy early and not miss out.

By Murray Green
After entering several marathons, Lance Bredeson decided to enter the Ironman Canada competition in Penticton, B.C., in the summer. He placed in the top five per cent of the athletes who finished the event. "I enjoy endurance sports and a friend of mine entered the ironman in 2010 so, ever since then, I have wanted to do it. I decided it was time for another challenge," said Lance, who has participated in the New York Marathon. "My wife had a baby three weeks before the ironman, so it was a commitment from our family." Lance started competing in triathlon this year in Vancouver. "It was great running along the beaches, but Penticton is entirely different," said Lance. "It is a huge community event. When you bike out of town, it seems like there are about seven people deep along most of the way. People are incredibly loud and it gives you a feel like the Tour de France. There is a band playing on top of the hill, lots of people along the road cheering and I think it is really important to that community. It's a fun atmosphere and a wonderful experience." The former New Norway resident, now a lawyer in Vancouver, started training for the ironman on January 2. "I followed the program right up to the race day on Aug. 26," explained Lance. "I've run in marathons since 2010 and trained with running since 2008. Training for a marathon is not the same time commitment as preparing for an ironman competition." Growing up, Lance played a lot of hockey and ball. "Endurance sports was the furthest thing from my mind at that time," joked Lance. "I was a little pudgy kid that had trouble running the length of the lane way." After high school Lance drifted away from the sports and towards running. "I started running in college and really enjoyed it. I kept going with it and one day I entered a marathon," added Lance. "It led to a few more and when a friend entered an ironman, it intrigued me to try it too. It was something interesting on which to focus. I grew up on the farm and, by being a lawyer, it was a case of getting out of the office and going back to the outdoors." Lance still enjoys the scenery that is similar to how he remembered it as a youth on the farm. "Being outdoors is great and running is a good way to release stress that builds up when you are in an office setting. Running around Stanley Park is a great way to spend a noon hour." In a field of about 2,500 ath-
letes, Lance placed 116th over all. "I was very happy with my finish considering some of those athletes are at the elite level. I also finished in the top 10 per cent in my age class in 24th place. I missed qualifying for the World Ironman event in Hawaii by about half an hour, but I'm okay with that. I qualified, through the half triathlon in Vancouver, to be on a Canadian team for the International Triathlon Union Long Distance World Championships in Belfort, France, on June 1. It will serve as a holiday for the family as well. Training is such a time commitment, that you can't do it without your spouse's support. By turning it into a holiday is a reward for my wife's support. It is a team effort between the two of us." In 2012, Lance entered an Olympic distance triathlon, a half ironman and the Ironman Canada event. His focus now is on training for the June event. "This is a great opportunity to wear the maple leaf and represent Canada. My hope is to be competitive in the race against others in my age group (35 to 39)," Lance said. "I like biking the most, but it is also the hardest. No matter where you are, going for a bike ride is fun, good exercise and you enjoy the countryside." Biking is the toughest part of a triathlon. "You have to jump on the bike after swimming and you also need to save something for running afterwards," explained Lance. "Cycling is the most difficult and a good triathlete will spend a lot time on the bike. A good or bad result for me will largely depend on how I do on the bike." Cycling usually takes up to 50 per cent of the training for a triathlon. "I train between 12 and 21 hours a week and half of that time is on the bike," Lance said. "To spend that much time at it, you have to enjoy it. I can't paint a picture or write a poem, so this is the best way for me to express myself." Lance doesn't have a set goal for the event in France, other than trying to beat his best time. "I have never been to the course and it isn't online yet, so I'm not sure. I just want to do my best. The bike course has a mountain in it and I'm not a great climber. I like flat ground or rolling hills. It's going to depend on how steep and tough the course is going to be. I just want to be competitive in the end." The team will be going a week before the event to view the course and to experience parts of it. "The good thing about being in Vancouver, is that we have cycling courses and mountains around us. It is a good training ground to prepare for the world championship."

Canadian Tire named franchise business of the year in Camrose By Dan Jensen
Canadian Tire was named franchise business of the year at the Camrose Chamber of Commerce Small Business Week awards banquet Oct. 17. The Camrose Canadian Tire store was purchased by Dave Jewell in 2003, nineteen years after it opened in 1984. There has been significant growth and expansion in recent years with the addition of a garden centre and extensive additions to product lines. The store has achieved Gold Level customer service status for ten straight years. "Canadian Tire is known as a strong supporter of community causes and events," said Small Business Week banquet mistress of ceremonies Diane Hutchinson. The current excitement for Canadian Tire is an imminent relocation to the former Zellers site, a move that will see its retail floor space go from 15,000 to 40,000 square feet. Jewell expressed his appreciation to Camrose and area shoppers, who he invited to come and see the new store when it opens November 1. "We have made the investment," he said. "I have been screaming for this store for the last five years." Jewell also expressed his appreciation to members of a dedicated staff who accompanied him to the stage for the award presentation. "My name is on the door but
these are the people who make it tick. These are the guys who are going to make it work." The other nominee for the franchise business of the year was Curves. Owned by Esther Eckert, Curves provides a complete 30-minute workout and weight management program designed especially for women. It has numerous locations throughout western Canada, and has been open in Camrose for ten years. "Curves prides itself on strengthening women, both in their health and fitness, but also by assisting them to feel good about themselves," said Hutchinson. Curves provides training so that all staff are skilled coaches and are able to enhance their knowledge of all aspects of the business. The business also supports a number of causes in the local community. The Camrose Chamber of Commerce Franchise Business of the Year Award is presented annually in recognition of significant business achievements, current memberships in various organizations, and the company's involvement in the general community. Past award recipients are Tim Horton's (2011), Canadian Tire (2010), Hauser Home Hardware Building Centre (2009) and Boston Pizza (2008).
Here is part of the team that was recognized at the Chamber of Commerce annual awards night.

Fall for Fashion! creating THE conditions FOR THE best PROFESSIONAL practice. “In my school, over the past two years, we have implemented several new initiatives. While change and growth are both good things in themselves, this is too much turmoil in too short a time. Because so much of my attention is captured by mandating initiatives, I have less attention to give to my students.” – BRSD Teacher

Hospice society holds first AGM Submitted
How often do you have a chance to attend a first annual general meeting? A relatively new organization – the Hospice Society of Camrose and District – is holding its first AGM on Monday, October 29, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at Rosehaven (4612 53 Street) in Camrose. You are invited! Besides the customary reports, elections, and other such business, there will be a presentation by Dr. Eric Wasylenko, a palliative care physician and ethicist from Okotoks. In his talk, entitled “Hospice Palliative Care – Caring with our Community,” Dr. Wasylenko will address hospice palliative care, rural hospice service provision, and the gift of community service in end-of-life care. There will be time for questions, answers, and discussion – all before the refreshment enriched break, which will precede the formal business of the meeting. For the first 10 years of his career, Dr. Wasylenko was a general practitioner, but then he undertook training in palliative care and helped create the integrated palliative care program in the Calgary Region. He initially served as palliative home care physician consultant as well as a consultant at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre Pain & Symptom Clinic. In the early 2000s he was

a member of the founding board of the Foothills Country Hospice Society and then led the volunteer community team that fundraised for, designed, and opened the Foothills Country Hospice. He served as its initial medical director. Dr. Wasylenko has served as medical director of the Clinical Ethics Service in Calgary and then as provincial medical director with Alberta Health Services for a number of years. He recently completed his Master's in Bioethics at the University of Toronto. He teaches and consults extensively, and has served in leadership roles with a number of health care organizations. He currently sits on the Ethics Advisory Committee of the Chief Public Health Officer of Canada. The Society’s mission is to provide, in a home-like and peaceful setting, compassionate care of the dying as well as support for their loved ones. The Society is in perpetual fund-raising and community-education mode; it is still seeking a facility (home) that can be modified to provide appropriate office and hospice space. More information about the Hospice Society, as well as details of the AGM, may be found at the Society’s website: http://www. camrosehospice.org/.
