Chamber appreciates support By Dan Jensen

The Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce is grateful for the support it has received from volunteers and sponsors in tackling the many tasks associated with Jaywalkers’ Jamboree. “We are so impressed with the number of indi-

viduals and businesses who have stepped up to the stage to support Jaywalkers’ Jamboree, whether it is with running the train, finalizing stage details, or assisting with waste removal,” said Chamber and District Chamber of Commerce Jaywalkers’ Jamboree committee chair

Colleen Labelle. “There is no way Jaywalkers’ Jamboree would happen without them.” Anyone interested in helping out in any capacity is encouraged to contact the Chamber office at 780-6724217.

Jaywalkers’ Jamboree offers the chance to test your skill and luck.

Jaywalkers’ Jamboree has always had an incredible economic impact on the Camrose business community. The first Jaywalkers’ Jamboree was held on June 20 and 21, 1958. “It was an instant hit,” said the late Bill Fowler, founder of The Camrose Booster and member of the planning committee that had been charged by then Chamber president Dr. Hamp Smith with either revitalizing the annual fall festival or shutting it down doing something else. “We offered two free rides for each child, with additional rides at five cents each, and had booths at which you could buy anything from lemonade to steers and hogs.” Happy with the increased exposure they were receiving, businesses offered sales and specials to “gladden the hearts of thrifty shoppers.” The F.W. Woolworth stand did “land-office business” according to its manager, Don Beebe, and the trading was so brisk on Friday afternoon that the Canadian Bank of Commerce ran out of $1 bills. The second Jaywalkers’ Jamboree was held June 19 and 20, 1959, and, despite the heavy rain on Saturday morning that forced some of the outdoor attractions inside, the event was rated a success. Radio station CFCW broadcast from a mobile unit spotted in front of Champion’s Bakery. The third Jaywalkers’ Jamboree was billed in a June 21 Booster ad as being more fun than a far eastern bazaar, as well as a unique experience in shopping pleasure. “There is more participation in every respect than ever before,” said Fowler in his weekly column, Bits, Binds and Baloney. “The event will be more colourful and interesting than ever.” The 1963 Jamboree included wild animal displays from Al Oeming’s Game Farm, a giant Lions auction sale, square dancing, lucky draws, games of chance, home baking and bargains galore. A new feature at the 1966 Jamboree was a Jamboree jackpot. Sixty thousand jackpot coupons were printed and sold to visitors at 25 for $1.00. The idea was for jaywalkers to choose the prize they most preferred, and deposit as many chances as they wished in that particular merchant’s draw barrel. Jaywalkers celebrated the 100th anniversary of Canadian confederation in 1967 by dressing in centennial costume. The grand jackpot offered by the Camrose Chamber of Commerce was 200 silver dollars. Mayors Vincent Dantzer, of Edmonton, and Dr. F.M. Smith, of Camrose, were two of the participants in what was billed as the Alberta Bundle Pitching Championship in 1968. Mayor Dantzer went on to defeat Mayor Smith in the opening round, despite disqualification rumours, and competed in the final Saturday afternoon against the eventual winner, Lieutenant Governor J. Grant MacEwan. Canoe races were held on Mirror Lake Saturday morning as part of the June 4 and 5, 1971, Jaywalkers’ Jamboree. The winning entry was rewarded with a trophy donated by Sid’s Sport Shop, plus the right to donate entry fees to a charity of choice. CFCW sponsored a world championship kobasa-eating contest at the 1973 Jamboree. Free rides in the Kobasa Chuckwagon were provided for children under the age of 12.

Reading University was one of the favourite projects of the late Joe Cramer who, in addition to being owner of the Norsemen Inn, was one of the most generous philanthropists Camrose has ever known. “He was very impressed with the work that the Reading University program did in giving children in Grades 2 and 3 the chance to catch up on their reading skills,” said Paula Cramer. “He loved attending the Reading University program graduation where the dean would put on his robe and present diplomas to the excited graduates. I would like the Reading University program to be a part of his legacy.” Cramer and JPC Enterprises was a supporter of the Reading University Program from virtually day one in 2009 when the idea was pitched to him and current mayor Norm Mayer by Battle River Community Foundation board chair Blain Fowler. “The Battle River School Division had already agreed to contribute $60,000 or 50 per cent towards the first year of the program if the BRCF paid the remaining 50 per cent,” said Fowler. “We were still $30,000 short after a $30,000 gift from an anonymous donor so I arranged a meeting with Joe and Norm and laid out the program’s details. When I asked them to backstop it they agreed and said they would each underwrite one third of any shortfall. There was no hesitation whatsoever.” Reading University Reading University is a four-week summer program at the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta

Paula Cramer presents a cheque for $20,000 to Battle River Community Foundation board chair Blain Fowler to establish a new endowment fund with BRCF in support of the Reading University program. (and in Flagstaff County) that is intended to improve the literacy skills of children in Grades 2 and 3 who are not yet reading at grade level. Students participate in different themes each week (animal week, drama week, dinosaur week) that are supported by activities which range from reading books and creating skits to using recipes to prepare treats and visits to popular attractions. During visits to the zoo, for example, students are given the task of researching different animals or reading the map so they can direct others to where they need to go. In the Augustana kitchen they read cookbooks to make treats that are shared with other students. “There is a certain amount of what you might call formal teaching, but a lot of the teaching is done in kind of a fun way and in such a way that they (students) don’t necessarily know they are being taught,” said Fowler. Reading University provides personalized attention with a student to teacher ratio of five to one and small class sizes.

Joe Cramer

“The teachers we have in the program are not the ones who are there for the pay cheque, but are the ones that are really interested in helping the students,” said Fowler. The program removes every obstacle or possible objection to participation. Students are picked up by bus from their doorsteps each morning, fed breakfast, lunch and snacks, and are dropped off in front of their home at the end of the day. They also receive t-shirts and backpacks, as well as books they can use

to practice their newfound reading skills. “Many of us have newspapers and magazines in their homes,” said Fowler. “A lot of time the only reading material they see is The Camrose Booster.” Battle River School Division teachers have told BRCF they can see a distinct difference in students who have attended Reading University. “ They mention increased ability, but also increased engagement and enthusiasm for both reading and for school in general,” said Fowler. “In the case of some students, teachers also mention increased levels of confidence.” The beginning Reading University is roughly based on a reading program that was started in Richmond, Indiana by Vic Jose, a man Fowler met at an International Free Papers of America (IFPA) conference. “He shared with me an Australian study which showed that Grade 3 seems to be the pivotal year for reading and literacy,” said Fowler. “He pointed out that from Grades 1 to 3 that

children are shown how to do things and learn how to read, but after that they read to learn, and that if they do not have good reading skills by Grade 3 they start falling behind others their own age.” Intrigued, Fowler did his own research and in 2009 presented the idea of Reading University to the directors of the BRCF. “We were experiencing a crop failure that year (with earnings on investments) and it was thought this was an area in which BRCF could provide community leadership,” said Fowler. “The board agreed and with its support the BRSD was approached to partner with us. The bottom line is that the BRSD decided to go for it and we agreed to split the cost 50-50.” Fowler is grateful that the Cramers and the Norsmen Inn have seen the value of supporting the reading program. “They have always been people you can count on and have been strong supporters of the community,” he said. “Whenever we have needed any kind of support they have been there.”

Start your jaywalking with a good breakfast By Dan Jensen

Camrose Chrysler will be hosting a pair of pancake breakfasts to help you get a good start on your jaywalking. “Camrose Chrysler is a great Jaywalkers’ Jamboree supporter,” said Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce Jaywalkers’ Jamboree committee chair Colleen Labelle. “Their staff are organized and competent in the way they prepare the food and serve everyone who comes through the line, rain or shine.” Friday’s breakfast will be held on 50 Avenue (next to the Professional Centre) from 7 to 9 a.m. Saturday’s breakfast will be held at the same location from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Coffee and juice will be provided by Starbucks. The pancake breakfast is one of the true bargains at Jaywalkers’ Jamboree. “It is a good way to kick off everything and get fueled up for the whole day ahead,” said Labelle. All proceeds from the breakfast are used to support Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce activities that are held throughout the year. The objective of the Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce is to provide a better understanding of the private enterprise system through networking services to members. The Chamber also promotes tourism, business and commerce, and the improvement of the quality of life in the community, recognizes excellence, and acts as a voice for business to local, provincial and national governments.

Trespassers causing damage to fields This story first appeared in the Country Booster edition, but due to public interest in Camrose, we are sharing it with our city readers. By Murray Green

Camrose County Protective Services officers receive increasingly numerous calls of trespassing and damage to property every year. Mud bogging, quads and moto-cross vehicles cause severe damage to land every year. “It is very frustrating as law enforcement officers that we are not able to catch these perpetrators more often. It has been my experience that the trespassing vehicles law enforcement are able to charge are often the ones that actually get stuck in the fields they are trespassing and mud bogging in,” said Sgt. Mike Kuzio, protective services manager. “If anyone ever observes this illegal activity occurring, they should do their best to get a licence plate number. Once law enforcement has this information there are many possibilities officers now have regarding laying charges, or seeking restitution for property damage.” If the trespassers are found committing the offence they receive a summons with the specified penalty of $287. “However, if there is extensive damage to a property there are other avenues law enforcement officers can take to seek restitution,” added Sgt. Kuzio. Mud bogging on private land is not only trespassing, but it is vandalism. It is very expensive for a landowner to repair the damage mud bogging and ruts cause. Any person who, without the permission of the owner or occupier of land, enters on land when entry is prohibited, or does not leave land

Ruts like the ones left in this field add extra work for landowners as they prepare for seeding season in the county.

immediately after he or she is directed to do so by the owner or occupier of the land or a person authorized by the owner or occupier, is guilty of an offence. A person who is guilty of an offence, whether or not any damage is caused by the contravention, is liable for a first offence, to a fine not exceeding $2,000 and for a second or subsequent offence in relation to the same land, to a fine not exceeding $5,000. “Law enforcement can compel an accused to court for first or second time offences to stand before the courts and the judge can lay a fine as high as $2,000 for a first time offence, or $5,000 for a second time offence if the offence occur on the same property. Understanding past complaints regarding trespassers tearing up field,

many times it will be at the discretion of the land owner to determine if they would like restitution,” explained Kuzio. “However, compelling an accused to court for a first offence for trespassing is not common practice. A person charged with a second or subsequent offence with respect to the same land is required to appear before a justice without the alternative of making a voluntary payment (automatic court appearance). “Another option if the perpetrators were caught in the act, we would be able to lay a criminal code charge of Mischief to Property,” said Sgt. Kuzio. “After this charge is laid the landowner can then advise law enforcement the cost of the damage and officers would then create a

Mud bogging holes leave damage to fields and can spread diseases such as clubroot if vehicles venture across fields.

Restitution Request, which will be given to the crown prosecutor, who would then bring that information in front of a judge for his/her discretion.” Besides rut and crop damage there are a few other levels of damage that most people don’t realize. Ruts compact the soil and when ruts are left the water will not drain away properly and plant roots cannot penetrate the rut thereby cutting yields for producers. Many farmers no longer work the land prior to seeding because it conserves moisture, and costs a lot for tillage. But, you cannot direct seed a field that is rutted because the field is too rough to travel across with a drill, a sprayer, or other equipment. Most ruts are deeper than the depth of seeding, so no seed is

planted in every rut. Every time a drill tire hits a rut the seed depth across the entire drill changes. All of these factors add costs to farmers and yields are reduced. Clubroot is a very serious canola disease in Camrose County. It can seriously hurt yields and in severe cases a farmer may have to wait years between canola crops. Clubroot is a soil borne disease and is easily transmitted between fields on tires, vehicles and on soil, or mud that sticks on vehicles. “Biosecurity for crop and oilseed producers is a very important part of their management plans,” said Mark Millang, County agricultural services manger. “Many off roaders are unaware of the risks soil borne pathogens like clubroot cause landowners. Plant pests including diseases, insects, nematodes, bacteria, fungi, viruses and weeds can be easily spread through the movement of soil and plant material.” If you drive across a field that has the disease, you will transmit that disease to every other field you drive across until all the mud, soil and disease spores are cleaned off the vehicle. Ruts that are left by driving on back country roads destroys the road. The ruts you leave cannot be fixed with a grader pass. And you hurt the landowners who need to roads to access fields and bins. Rural crime watch programs can assist with seeking trespassing. Landowners need the public’s help to stop the damage caused every spring. Mud bogging is vandalism and theft. Report crimes to Camrose County at 780672-4449.

Deep holes left on gravel roads are not easily fixed by just grading. The roads often remain in poor condition until they can be rebuilt.

When it comes to booking a booth for Jaywalkers’ Jamboree there is good news and bad news. The good news is that there are still plenty of spaces available for 2016. The bad is that there aren’t many left for 2015. “We only have a few left,” said Camrose and District Jaywalkers’ Jamboree committee chair Colleen Labelle. Basic booth sizes are available in 10 by 10 foot and the larger 10 by 20 foot sizes. People can get the size of booth that they want, depending on how much they want to put on display. The Camrose Chamber of Commerce booth will be back at its usual location at 50 Street and 50 Avenue. It is the place to get any information you need about events and where they are happening. While many of the previous exhibitors are going to be back, there will be the usual sprinkling of new ones. “It’s exciting to see some of the new businesses that have moved to Camrose in the last year or two catching the Jaywalkers’ Jamboree spirit,” said Labelle. More and more people from other communities are wanting to be part of Jaywalkers’ Jamboree, which has gained a solid reputation right across the province.”

Jaywalkers’ Jamboree will have a 60s theme By Dan Jensen

The 58th annual Jaywalkers’ Jamboree on June 5 and 6 will have a 1960s theme. “The 1950s theme that we had was so well received that we decided to move up a decade and celebrate the sixties,” explained Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce Jaywalkers’ Jamboree committee chair Colleen Labelle. “It’s going to be a celebration of peace, love and flower power.” The Chamber will be offering prizes for best costumes in the under eight, nine to 17 and 18 and over age categories. Judging will be done by Luke Norrie, from the Canadian Brewhouse, on Saturday afternoon. “The time will be announced but for now people need to be sure to register,” said Labelle. The Chamber will also be offering a free spot in the 2016 Jaywalkers’ Jamboree to the business that is judged to be “best dressed” in the 1960s theme. Ideas for 1960s costumes include tie-dye t-shirts, bell bottom pants, chains with the words peace and love. “You can get a pretty good idea of what to do by watching some of the clips from Woodstock,” said Labelle. Let yourself go New experiences to enjoy at this year’s Jaywalkers’ Jamboree include virtual reality hang gliding and pilot experiences courtesy of the Camrose Rotary Air Cadets, a mechanical bull, rock climbing wall and a bungee trampoline. “The trampoline is safe, easy and an experience you will never forget,” said Labelle. The Brick will be setting up a two-day outdoor farmers’ market. Entertainment Friday performers on the City Center stage (in front of Doerksen Tae Kwon-Do) are Hal Strudwick, Mr. Banjo & Company, the Bill Mattinson and Herb Krekoski Band, the Norton Metcalfe Band, Go Sun Go, The Olson Brothers, The Burn Ins and The Ride (a 1960s band). Friday performers on the Nordic Mechanical Services stage (50 Avenue and 50 Street) are Stephen Olson, Fraid Notz, the Bashaw School Band, Music Masters, Charlie Killam School, Charly Doll, Brian Dumont, Rev K, CCHS Jazz Band, Chorazz, Camrose and Area Junior Children’s Choir and Vivo Cantando, and the Ukrainian Veselka Dancers. Saturday performers on the City Center stage are Hal Strudwick, Rev K and the Freedom Eagles, Black Gold Community Band, BPM Trio, Go Sun Go, Thoughts Left Unsaid, and the Mokry Blues Project. Saturday performers on the Nordic Mechanical Services stage are Stephen Olson, Kim Neufeld, Camrose Spirals, Camrose Academy of Dance, Fox Tae Kwon-Do, Ballet Camrose, About Time Productions (from the musical “13”), Prairie Cats, and The Ghostriders.

City to plant $20,000 worth of trees By Sara Walkey

The Camrose Wildlife and Stewardship Society was one of 159 successful applicants for CN grants of $25,000. The objective of CN EcoConnexions’ From the Ground Up program is to promote community sustainability through the greening of municipal and community properties across Canada. CN and its partners, Tree Canada and Communities in Bloom, help Canadian municipalities and community groups establish tree planting and green space enhancement initiatives in a sustainable, environmentally responsible manner. The goal of the grant money is for reforesting portions of our greenspace system to enhance these areas for wildlife and use by recreationists. A portion of the proposed planting areas are designated dog off-leash parks, and as such, are in need of significant upgrades to enhance the experience for the park users. Always working in cooperation with the City of Camrose, the Camrose Wildlife and Stewardship Society has, as part of its mandate, raised awareness of the importance of the natural landscape in an urban environment at a local level. Through the Camrose Wildlife and Stewardship Society, community programs, tree plantings and environmental research have all contributed to the overall quality of life in the Camrose community. The plan was to organize planting days over a one month period (mid March to mid June) at various locations in the Stoney Creek Valley. This will allow various groups and individuals to participate in tree planting sessions where they will learn how to plant seedlings and potted stock to reforest areas in need of enhancement and beautification. This will maintain the quality of our greenspace areas in the centre of our community. The City of Camrose will provide ongoing maintenance and monitoring of the trees, as well as provide all the equipment to dig holes if required, procure the trees, and provide supplies to volunteers. We invite you to join us on June 13 at 11 a.m. to celebrate the beginning of this initiative where we plant the first tree. Attendees will include Camrose City Council, local media, volunteers and stakeholders. With sunny weather we will meet at the parking lot by the trestle on 50 Street, or with raining conditions we will meet at the Stoney Creek Lodge (5320-39 Avenue).

Train will be running By Dan Jensen

The Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce is looking for volunteers to assist with the operation of its train, the Mirror Lake Express, during Jaywalkers’ Jamboree. The train will run on the Mirror Lake trail from 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday. Rides are $2.50, with children two and under free. The Mirror Lake Express has been a regular fixture at a number of parades and special events throughout central Alberta, including the Edmonton K-Days. An estimated 100 people donate their time to the train during the course of the summer, including Visitor Information Centre staff, who ride ahead on bikes when the train is on the Mirror Lake trail system to let people know it is coming. The Mirror Lake Express was a labour of love for the late Jeppa Danielson. It is powered by a 20 h.p. Honda engine and features a fire-box which helps produce the smoke and steam which puffs lazily from the stack as the train chugs along. There is also a swivelling spot light in a beautiful oak box mount, a brass bell, a hand-carved face-plate and, of course, the antique train whistle powered by an air compressor hidden back in the caboose. The train made its first official appearance at the 2003 Big Valley Jamboree Parade.

CARDS establishes new community service By Bob Jonson

Each year Alberta suffers over 20 drowning deaths. On May Long Weekend in 2012 tragedy struck close to home with the drowning deaths of two local youths in Coal Lake 20 km from Camrose. As a result of the recovery efforts Camrose Fire Department Captain Greg Jonson met Ken Holliday, the owner of Northwest SCUBA in Edmonton and a fast friendship was formed. Ken explained how rural Alberta does not have a volunteer SCUBA rescue and recovery team. Captain Jonson brought the idea of creating a SCUBA team back to the fire hall and recruited seven more interested members who began training courses with their own money in the fall of 2012. Since then CARDS (Central Alberta Rescue Diving Society) was formed and has completed eight specialty diving

The CARDS team prepares to do a training dive in Jasper.

certifications, completing dives in Edmonton, Jasper, Narrow Lake, Athabasca and the Blatz pit in the county east of Camrose. The goal is to become certified as Public Safety Divers with another specialty in Evidence

Recovery and Preservation. While recreational diving can be dangerous and difficult, Public Safety diving is even more so. The risks associated include entanglement, frigid temperatures and often very

limited visibility. Captain Jonson sees this as an extension of the work the Camrose Fire Department trains for all the time. Firefighters train to enter burning structures and rescue people from crashed cars. The difference here

is rescuing and recovering people from waterways, wherever in central Alberta they may be called. However more specialized training and equipment is needed. The members of CARDS have each spent thousands of dollars on their own, and are seeking public donations to continue their training and creating Alberta’s first rural volunteer SCUBA rescue and recovery team. CARDS would like to thank Bill and Denise Simons, Enerplus, Central Agencies and other local businesses for their ongoing assistance and support. CARDS would also like to thank the Camrose Firefighter’s Association for their support. The group is a not-forprofit society and will be setting up an educational booth and dunk tank at Jaywalker’s Jamboree this year. Please stop by and say hi to the guys and learn more about CARDS, SCUBA and water safety.

The JAYWALKERS’ JAMBOREE SUPER BOOSTER, June 2, 2015 – Page 28

A member of the 3068 South Alberta Light Horse Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps explores Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse.

Cadets were given the opportunity to sail on board an ‘Orca’ class training vessel.

Cadets explore Victoria and CFB Esquimault Submitted

Cadets from 3068 South Alberta Light Horse Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps in Camrose were invited to participate in a trip to Victoria and CFB Esquimault by the 56 Nootka Royal Canadian Sea Cadets in Holden. The week-long trip took place over spring break during March and April of this year. Thirty-four youth from both units took part in the trip. The Cadets were housed at CFB Esquimault and were very well received by the base. They were given a tour of CFB Esquimault and taught of its rich naval history dating back to the 19th century. As well, Cadets toured the Dive School, the Ordinance Disposal Unit, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, the Damage Control Centre, the Esquimault Naval Museum, and were given the opportunity to sail on board an ‘Orca’ class training vessel. Away from the base the Cadets were able to visit Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse, The Royal BC Museum, and MacAuley Point. They went on a day hike at Aylard Farm, East Sooke Regional Park, courtesy of Captain Brad

Cadets pose for a group photo in Victoria before embarking on a whale watching expedition.

McRobert, the former RSM of 3068, and had a whale watching excursion. The Cadets were able to learn about the rich coastal history of Vancouver Island from both a naval (military) perspective, but also from that of Canada’s First Nations People and the early European settlers of

Canada’s west coast. For many youth it was a memory that will last years, as the sights and experiences were ones that are unique for Army Cadets, and even for Sea Cadets coming from the prairies. The Cadets themselves provided various feedback on the trip. From

whale watching, to hiking through the forests at Aylard Farm and being able to get up close with the Pacific Ocean and the aquatic wildlife within, there were too many highlights too chose. For Cadets interested in the navy or the military life in general, the opportunity to take

part in the sail, view the damage control center, the ordinance disposal or the Dive School brought fascinating information for future career plans. The trip was made possible through fundraising by both Cadet units. The Cadets and staff of both units would like to thank everyone who supported them in their fundraising for this trip, as well as Capt McRobert, the personnel at CFB Esquimault, and Bi-West Translines in Camrose for providing the charter to, from and around Victoria. The Royal Canadian Army Cadets and Royal Canadian Sea Cadets are community organizations open to youth 12 to 18 years of age. There are no enrolment or membership fees, and uniforms are provided “on loan” to members. Those interested in the Army Cadet program in Camrose can contact Captain Alex Boos at 780-672-3194. Those interested in joining the Sea Cadet program in Holden can Contact Sub Lieutenant Don Young at 780-688-3901. For more information on the Cadet program, visit www. cadets.ca.

Healthy Lifestyle Coalition adds bike racks to community The Camrose Healthy Lifestyle Coalition conducted a community wide survey on active transportation in 2014 and the results came in loud and clear: more people would bike if there were more bike racks! In an effort to reduce barriers to active transportation, the coalition obtained grant funding and purchased four additional bike racks. The City of Camrose has partnered to provide the installation and maintenance on these. The new

bike rack locations are: Stoney Creek Centre, Chuck MacLean Arts Centre, the Gateway Centre and Jubilee Park (to be installed upon completion of construction). “Our coalition has been looking at ways to enhance active transportation and we are very excited to respond to the needs of the community by having additional bike racks throughout the city,” said Lucy Ernst, co-chair of the Camrose Healthy Lifestyle Coalition. “We hope that by creating more supportive

environments around biking, we will see more people biking as a result.” Results from the 2014 Camrose Bike Survey also indicated that community members would like to see more bike racks downtown, along Main Street. The Camrose Healthy Lifestyle Coalition was pleased to learn that the City of Camrose already places six seasonal bike racks along Main Street each year. The Camrose Healthy Lifestyle Coalition would like

the public to know that bike racks in Camrose come in various shapes and sizes. “It was mentioned numerous times in our bike survey that certain locations in Camrose could benefit from having a bike rack when interestingly, these locations already had them,” said Ernst. “They just did not look like the traditional type of bike rack.” In an effort to educate citizens on the many bike rack shapes, sizes and locations available in Camrose,

the Camrose Healthy Lifestyle Coalition would like to introduce the community to “Goldie”, an old bike that was rescued (with permission) from the landfill and painted gold. Goldie will be rotated throughout various bike rack locations this spring and summer. The coalition encourages community members to get on their bikes and find Goldie! Snap a selfie with Goldie and post it on the Camrose Healthy Lifestyle Coalition’s Facebook page.

Travel Alberta? The crisis of public transport in Battle River By Jane Ross When Irene needed cataract surgery, she had no way of getting from her home in Provost, to her appointment in Saskatoon. Without a car, she was dependent on a friend-ofa-friend to drive her to the nearby town of Macklin in the middle of the night, so she could catch the bus to cross the border. Irene’s story is just one of many about rural Alberta residents coping with the serious lack of pubic regional transportation. Until recently, rural Alberta communities were well connected by bus and train, enabling residents, who couldn’t or didn’t drive, to get from one community to another. As rural transportation options dwindled over the years, the final blow came in 2011 when Greyhound cut its essential passenger service to Battle River region, and then in 2012 to over another dozen small towns across the province. Nowadays, if you don’t live along the major northsouth transportation corridor that connects the cities of Edmonton, Calgary and Lethbridge, you’re simply out of luck. In an attempt to ameliorate this situation, the Battle River Bus pilot project was developed as an affordable regional model for rural transportation in the Battle River region having a combined population of some 150,000 people. The Association for Life-Wide Living (ALL) of Alberta launched the concept for regional bus service as part of its multiphase regional transportation plan, which was drafted in 2012. With the support of the Alberta Rural Development Network, Camrose County and the local Thrift Store support, the weekly bus service was launched in May 2013, connecting five different rural communities – including Bashaw, Edberg, Ferintosh, New Norway and Duhamel. At the end of 2014, however, the pilot project funding provided by Camrose County came to an end. For the time being, Bashaw Bus Society is maintaining the weekly trip between Bashaw and

Camrose on its own. Over the course of the yearlong pilot project, ridership slowly increased, but not quickly enough. Ridership numbers would have presumably been higher had there been the resources to fund the public outreach work necessary to inform residents of the available service. It is clear at this point that in order to cover the ongoing operational costs for this regional service, there needs to be commitment from other levels of government to develop

and implement a viable, affordable regional transportation model. So what’s next for the Battle River Bus? While ALL is working actively to make rural transportation a priority, they are also pursuing provincial and national granting opportunities, including tapping into the Federal Gas Tax Fund. In terms of long-term sustainability, however, ALL is committed to moving beyond grant dependency toward developing the capacity to design and

apply a business model appropriate to the transportation needs of people in the Battle River Country. Although a regional public transportation network in rural Alberta would serve all age groups, it would strongly benefit seniors like Irene – who don’t drive. While the concept of “aging in place” informs a growing number of policies within urban areas, “aging in rural places” is nearly impossible due to a lack of access to essential health-

38 YEARS

care services. Although this situation might not be entirely avoidable, publicly available transportation could at least help aging rural residents to live at home for longer. Looking ahead, we need to rethink our traditional approaches to transportation planning and embrace a regional model that will serve rural citizens over their entire lifespan. ALL 2020 Regional transportation proposed plan for Battle River Region.

Preserving the purple martin Great things happen when a community unites to achieve a common goal. In the case of the Camrose Wildlife and Stewardship Society (CWSS), a volunteer-based environmental group, that achievement is the preservation of the purple martin, a highly-friendly and beautiful species of swallow. “Researchers are in the process of determining why this species is in such large decline,” says Glen Hevenegaard, chair of CWSS. “The purple martin eats insects while flying, which leads to speculation of the wide range of causes, including climate change and pesticides used on their primary food source. We’re working with researchers to develop conservation programs.” Part of this work is CWSS’s sixth annual Camrose Purple Martin Festival, which will be held on June 21 at the Stoney Creek Centre. With support from Alberta Conservation Association and Ross Agri, the day-long event includes keynote speakers, children’s activities and field trips, all in the spirit of wildlife conservation. “We currently have 150 pairs of purple martins in our human-provided homes, a population that has grown 20-fold since 2002,” said Hevenegaard. “Developing engagement is a long term process. IOt requires commitment and passion, and we’re pleased to encourage our community to be part of the solution.” CWSS’s environmental commitment extends yearround with a wide range of community programming and initiatives. In 2002, alongside the City of Camrose, the group developed the Camrose Wildlife and Greenspace Stewardship Project, a series of environmental activities that promote the enhanced management of greenspace and wildlife in the Camrose area. The project, which has transformed how the City approaches its planning, was recently recognized as an Emerald Awards finalist in the Community Group or Not-for-Profit category. “It’s affirming to know that an agency like the Emerald Awards sees our work as worthwhile,” said Hvenegaard. “It’s a real pat on the back. We hope it brings more awareness to the cause.” The Emerald Awards, presented by the Alberta Emerald Foundation, celebrate and recognize environmental stewardship in the province. Recipients of the 24th annual Emerald Awards will be announced June 4 at the Citadel Theatre, in Edmonton.

Labelle excited about Jaywalkers By Dan Jensen

Colleen Labelle finds it hard to not get excited about Jaywalkers’ Jamboree. “I love the energy that I get from being involved and helping committed people make plans for something that has so much history and tradition,” said the chair of the Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce Jaywalkers’ Jamboree committee. “It’s a lot of work in getting all the

stars to line up but we have great support from (Chamber) executive director Sharon Anderson. “We know that everything we do is helping to better the Camrose business community.” Labelle feels Jaywalkers’ Jamboree is a unique in the province in the way it appeals to all parts of the community. “I have attended events like the Calgary Stampede

and Edmonton K-Days but I have never seen a festival where so many people and businesses are involved in planning and being part of the day-to-day events,” she said. “I looked out today and saw that the downtown businesses are already starting to get ready with their decorations.” Labelle has always been impressed with the way

businesses in Camrose support each other. “It’s rare to come into a community of this size that has both a big Walmart and a thriving downtown business community,” she said. “That is something I believe that Camrose can be very proud of.” Other members of the Camrose and District Jaywalkers’ Jamboree committee are Chuck Erman, Jenni Routhier and Trevor Vinet.

By Murray Green

The full line-up of performers for the Big Valley Jamboree saloon from July 30 to Aug. 2 has been set. Great music is not just limited to the main stage. The weekend begins with the Thursday Kick-off Party featuring The Orchard, The Dead South, Mark Chesnutt, Dallas Smith and Kory Wlos, a true rural Albertan with a strong musical background. Friday’s saloon line-up includes Mickey Pye, the Australian cowboy. Joining him will be a returning group of fan favourites, The Boom Chucka Boys, who are bringing back their unique party-rock brand of country, along with Dan Davidson (of the well-known indie band Tupelo Honey), who will be showcasing his highly anticipated country solo project. Saturday will feature another couple of BVJ veterans including J.J. Voss and Aaron Pritchett. Joining them will be a BVJ first-timer, Cory Marquardt. Sunday night’s stage will be graced by Leah Daniels, an up-and-coming country queen with catchy, pop stylings. Charlie Major and Craig Moritz are returning favourites. for summer building! Brenda Knull will have to readjust when she comes back home from Kamifurano Brenda Knull, BRSD teacher

In a few months from now when I’m back in Camrose I might do some things others may find peculiar. I might try to enter the right side of a vehicle in order to drive it. Here, the steering wheel is on the right, and people drive in the left lane. This is one of the many habits that I’ve developed as a result of living in Kamifurano for the last two years. When entering someone’s house I will most likely take off my shoes, place them together facing toward the door, and then look for slippers to wear. When I go to the toilet (what is referred to as the washroom in Camrose) I will look for toilet slippers to wear as I use the facilities. When people go to

the toilet they change into special slippers that are only worn in that room. It is thought unsanitary to track toilet footwear throughout the rest of a building. It’s commonplace to wear slippers or inside shoes inside buildings. For example, everyone is a school changes footwear upon entering and exiting the building. When talking to others I will probably bow. Bowing is very common in Japan and it’s an important thing to do. Bowing is a sign of respect and it’s used as a way to communicate nonverbally. The degree of your bow should differ depending on whom you’re talking to. I’ve often seen my co-workers bowing as they talk on the telephone. I’ve seen many

It’s also customary to bow and back out of a room as you exit it. When I’m out in Camrose and am thirsty I will most likely look for a vending machine so that I can purchase a drink. In Japan, vending machines seem to be everywhere and they contain a variety of products. I’ve heard about ones that sell umbrellas, electronics, and ramen noodles. The most surprising item that I ever saw was a potato. It was uncooked and looked like it just came out of the garden. Vending machines usually contain both hot and cold beverages. There is often a choice of a few different soups such as corn and consommé. When I’m at my home in Camrose at 20:00 (Japan uses the 24 hour clock) I will be expecting to hear the nightly news. In Kamifurano there is news and community event information that airs each night. I made a habit of listening to the broadcast on the radio in

my house. I could understand very little of what I heard but I was told that there were announcements about citizen deaths as well as details about special things happening in town. There were even a few times that I heard my name on the news. This alarmed me since I didn’t know why I was being mentioned. Turns out they were just telling people about a Halloween party that parents could register their children for if they wished to attend. When I hear songs such as “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” I might think that my laundry or my rice is ready. Many of the appliances in my house in Kamifurano play a song when they start and finish. Hearing these songs made me happy and I never quite got over the fact that they had the ability to do that. The novelty did wear off a bit when I remembered that the appliance’s work had ended and it was my turn to complete part of a task. When I’m asked to sign my name I might not reach for a pen; I might look for my name stamp

that I used in Kamifurano. In Japan, everyone has a name stamp called Hanko or Han. The stamp is used anytime you are required to provide your signature. You simply press the end of your stamp on an inkpad and then add your name to a paper. My stamp actually says Brenda Null not Brenda Knull. This is because when people saw the spelling of my last name they followed the usual rule of the ‘k’ being silent when an ‘n’ comes after it. There are many things about Japanese culture that I’ve integrated into my daily life. I’ve become accustomed to the way things are here. I imagine that coming back to Camrose will be a little like I when first moved to Kamifurano. I’m sure that many cultural habits were evident when I moved to Camrose’s sister city. It’s amazing to me how one can adapt to a new culture when being open to it and immersed in it. I’m sure it won’t take me too long to get back into the swing of things in Camrose but I will always remember my Kamifurano life.
