Days could be numbered for Camrose ski jump By Dan Jensen
A proposal by City councillor Max Lindstrand to structure a committee that would look at alternatives to the demolition of the Camrose Ski Jump failed to gain much in the way of support at a Committee of the Whole council meeting Aug. 10. Councillor Agnes Hoveland said she cannot support refurbishing the ski jump given the other priorities that need to be addressed. “We are faced with Camrose having one of the highest poverty rates in Alberta. We have no transportation, we need low cost housing. We need a new water treatment plant. I find it really hard at this point. I cherish history as much as anyone else but I really can’t support keeping the ski jump at this point.” Camrose Community Services general manager Ryan Poole told councillors that the City would be looking at big costs if it wanted to work with Ski Canada and other nordic sport organizations to re-establish ski jumping as a sport. “To do it here would basically mean almost starting from scratch,” he said. “The existing hill and landing do not meet standards so we would almost have to build the entire system from the creek bottom right up to the actual scaffold or jump itself.” Councillor Hoveland said it is unfortunate that the ski jump has not been
used and that there hasn’t been a group come forward with a plan to refurbish it. “We have not had that. Now we are faced with extreme costs in refurbishing and to what purpose? We have no plan.” Councillor Max Lindstrand suggested it would premature for the City to remove the ski jump without knowing what kind of assistance the City would be able to receive from national or provincial sport bodies for the creation of new facilities. “We have quite a number of snow sports and perhaps if there are sufficient funds available we could restore this ski jump to a competitive level. Perhaps Augustana would be interested in getting involved in nordic combined once again. Is it a pie in the sky idea or is it something that might be viable? We have no idea what the cost would be to accomplish that.” Councillor Lindstrand also questioned whether the ski jump would be a ready made sculpture such as the pysanka at Vegreville, the mallard duck at Andrew and the sausage at Mundare. “Are we by just knocking this down missing out on an opportunity to have a structure that ends up being symbolic of Camrose?” Councillor Bill Sears expressed his support for a committee that would gather ideas from those who are passionate about the ski
jump and present alternatives other than those having to do with removal. “I think we are a little premature here,” he said. “We need more discussion on this. I really like the idea of a public committee to
“I think the old one has to come down. If nordic skiing has adequate funds that we could put a new one up that is feasible I don’t have a problem with that.” – Mayor Mayer bring some further discussion forward. I am not sure what the timeline for the ski jump actually is but I really do think we need time for more discussion.” Councillor Wayne Throndson said the impression he has received over the last several weeks is that the majority of Camrose residents want the ski jump taken down. “I cherish my Norwegian heritage as much as anybody but that ski jump to me is not the ski jump I remember as a child. As I said before, if this was the old wooden ski jump that was here when I was a toddler I would be more sympathetic to keeping it. That is not the one.” Councillor Throndson said he would be in favour
of forming a committee to gather input on how to properly memorialize the city’s ski jumping heritage but only after the ski jump comes down. “I do like the ideas that have come forward in terms of doing something at the ski hut with a structure and proper plaques memorializing the Servolds and the Norwegians that fell off that thing.” Councillor David Ofrim suggested that there hasn’t been enough time to look at all the ski jump options. “It has only been very recently that we have publicly known about this,” he said. “I don’t think there has been enough time to react to it properly. The suggestion of a committee makes a lot of sense to me, rather than pull the plug right now. I would go for a committee, a kind of stay of execution.” Councillor Greg Wood said if council is going to delay a decision the City has to take steps to secure the ski jump a little better than it is now. “If you check the police report from last Tuesday I am sure you will find that one of our finest scaled the ski hill to coax three individuals off the top of the ski jump, so it is not secure.” Poole said the individuals were able to gain access to the ski jump by a hinge on the fence. “They were able to gain a foothold on the hinge and get up and on and over. As of last Friday we ordered to
have that basically welded over and covered up. Having said that, I have seen people get up water towers that were completely Fort Knoxed.” Councillor Hoveland said her biggest concern with the ski jump is public safety. “That has to be addressed immediately at whatever cost. We cannot stand to be liable for something that happens, and the more it is out in the public the more the kids will say ok, lets go see if we can climb it. It has now become a topic and that scares me.” Mayor Norm Mayer noted that a refurbishment of the ski jump is not going to work if there is any hope of using it for future events. “If we are going to have a ski jump we have to start from scratch. This one is beyond repair; it has been condemmed, is probably the right word, by nordic skiing, who are now involved because somebody obviously has phoned and (told them to) write a letter in support of this thing. I think the old one has to come down. If nordic skiing has adequate funds that we could put a new one up that is feasible I don’t have a problem with that. The other problem that was addressed before with the ski jump was that the creek at the bottom is too close. You don’t have the right distances to jump from and land safely and not wind up in the creek.” Continued on page 5

Mayor Mayer said the City should acknowledge the ski jumpers who have put Camrose on the map by placing a monument at the top of the hill or, more practically, in the existing ski lodge. “Put all the memorabilia, put all the stuff that we can find in there to recognize the people who have achieved in the various situations. That is then available to the people who come to Camrose. They are not going to be able to access the top of the hill unless we spend major dollars, and I think we have a lot of pressing municipal concerns that we have to deal with also.” Mayor Mayer said while the City has liability insurance, he doesn’t want to be the one telling some famly that their daughter or son has fallen off the ski jump and has been killed, or is now a parapalegic. “I don’t want that on my watch. I think it has to be come down. I don’t think it is refurbishable. We could build it like Fort Knox but somebody will figure a way to get up there, and all we are doing by leaving it there is hanging ourselves out to dry on liability because we know it is a problem. If it can’t be reusable, and those are the words that we have, then I don’t think there is any option but to get it down as quickly as we can.” Mayer said if Camrose is going to have a ski jump it should be a proper ski jump. “Let’s find out what can be done through the nordic ski people and find out if there is any possibility of having something on that hill that would work, and if so, do they have funding that they can do it with because financially, the City of Camrose has some fairly heavy obligations that I think we have to live with.” Poole told council the Camrose Ski Club will be requesting support in future budget years with renovations and upgrades to the ski lodge, as well as trail projects. “They said if it was a matter of putting funds towards projects that enhance the ski club, which grew from 150 to 400 members over the past three years, or the ski jump, they would rather put their money there (projects),” he said.
CAMROSE MOOSE HELP SCOUTS
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Members of the Camrose 6th Scouts received funds from the Camrose Moose to send scouts and leaders to a Pacific Jamboree in B.C. in July. Receiving $1,050 were Braydon Bouilion, Cailyn Lalonde, Dinessa Johnson, Aiden Schultz and leader Dianna Lindberg from Moose club treasurer Tom Niven. The Moose donated the funds, while the scouts help with monthly breakfasts at the lodge. Breakfasts are held every third Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with the next dates Sept. 20 and Oct. 18.

Break and Enters solved by police On August 9 at approximately 9:20 a.m. the Camrose Police Service received a 911 call from a resident who stated that there was a break and enter in progress at her residence. The woman had observed two males inside her home stealing property. Upon arrival it was determined that the suspects fled on foot after crashing a car through the garage doors thereby disabling it. An extensive search of the area failed to locate the individuals, however some evidence was located and an ongoing investigation continued. In the early morning hours of August 10, a male known to police was located and questioned. He was immediately noted to be wearing a watch stolen from the residential break and enter reported on August 9. The male was arrested and the property was recovered. He later confessed to being inside the residence and committing the offence. On August 10 a second male was arrested on outstanding warrants for failing to appear in court in Edmonton. Further investigation revealed that this subject was the second individual involved in the crime. The male later confessed to being inside the residence during the break and enter. He also admitted to a second break and enter as well as stealing various items from around Camrose. A 31-year-old Camrose man was charged with Break and Enter and Theft of a Firearm, Break and Enter and Commit Theft, Break Out of a Place After Committing an Offence, Disguised with Intent, Possession of Stolen Property over $5,000, and Possession of Stolen Property under $5,000 (three counts). A 26-year-old Camrose man was charged with Break and Enter and Theft of a Firearm, Break and Enter and Commit Theft, Breach of Release Conditions (f ive counts), Breach of a Peace Bond (three counts), Possess a Firearm Contrary to F irea r m P roh ibition, and Possession of Stolen Property under $5,000. It should be noted that when the 26-year-old male was arrested he was on release for previous charges of home break and enters. He had been released on a $500 cash recognizance from the previous offences which occurred in Camrose.

Camrose Police on the lookout for armed robber In September of 2014, the Camrose Police Service charged a 42-year-old male with armed robbery. It is alleged that the Wetaskiwin man and an accomplice robbed a jewelry store in Camrose, while armed with a handgun. The male was held in custody until May 26, 2015, where he was committed to stand trial, however, he was released on bail with several conditions by which to abide. The bail conditions allowed Howse to attend a treatment program and he was to return to the Edmonton Remand Centre upon completion of this program. On August 6, police confirmed that he did not return to the Edmonton Remand Centre and a warrant was issued for his arrest. Further charges have been laid for Breaching the Conditions of his Recognizance. Police are actively looking for the male and encourage the public to call if his whereabouts are known. He is aboriginal, 5’ 11” and 265 lbs. He has a large skull tattoo with four bone fingers on the right side of his neck and a teardrop tattoo near his left eye. He has a history of violent crimes and extreme caution should be exercised.

There’s no question as to what Battle RiverCrowfoot MP Kevin Sorenson sees as the number one issue in the current federal election campaign. “All the constituents I have talked to want to know what is going on with the economy,” said Sorenson. “Our oil and gas sector is down and we know there are jobs that have been cut back.” Sorenson believes the Conservative Party, under Prime Minister Stephen Harper, has a solid plan for what it will take to get the country back on solid ground. “We have a strong long term economic action plan that has kept taxes low and had job creation as a major plank and that continues. You compare that with the opposition parties which are running with a high tax platform. I think that is fair because that is exactly what they are talking about. We (Conservatives) have lowered the GST, and brought in tax savings, whether it be for small businesses or individuals.” Sorenson thinks the longer election campaign is fair to all the parties involved. “I could be trucking around the constituency right now (if the election hadn’t been called yet) and having the taxpayers pay my way but that is not right,” he said. “I think it is better that the political parties pay for those costs themselves. Doing it this way will result in fewer costs for the taxpayers.” Sorenson said he is always working hard to earn the support of people in his riding. “In a way, I have been campaigning for the last 15 years. You have to do that continuously.” Sorenson plans to set up campaign offices in Camrose and other places throughout Battle River-Crowfoot. “I don’t have anything on my schedule yet as far as debates go, but those will come as we get closer to the election,” he said. “The other parties, with the exception of the Green Party, don’t know yet who their candidates are going to be and they need to be given time. I am looking forward to debating the issues with whoever they put forward.”

Chris Zamora is a woman of vision, courage and determination. She is involved in the ownership of three Global Pet Food stores: Camrose, Wetaskiwin and Sylvan Lake. She has seen firsthand the value of feeding her dog and cat quality food and treats. This desire led her to Global Pet Foods – a leading Canadian company which sources and sells private label, natural and holistic foods that are priced right. These foods must contain all natural ingredients and have no artificial preservatives. Global Pet Foods strives to buy the majority of product direct from Canadian manufacturers – product that is competitively priced with supermarket labels and is healthier! While Chris sells premium pet foods and an impressive assortment of pet treats and supplements, toys and accessories, a lot of her customers drop by her store on 48 Ave. in Camrose for pet advice or just to talk about their animals (which are very much welcome inside). As one passionate about animals, she can easily relate to problems others may be having. Chris is a huge supporter of rescue groups; Battle River Animal Protection Society, Through YOUR Pets Eyes & Serenity Pet Rescue, a member of the Chamber of Commerce in Camrose and Wetaskiwn, and loves spending time outdoors with her husband, Paul, a firefighter. Heather Dillon, by formal education and ten-plus years of experience, is a social worker. However, her true calling has always been something which better allowed her to express her creativity, her imagination and desire to bring smiles to customers. Her purchase of Fine Framing & Such earlier this year, from her great friend Effie Longhe has, in her own words, “been an amazing and wonderful experience, already!”” Her hobbies of pottery and crafting meant Heather had spent many hours in Effie’s downtown Camrose shop visiting, learning and admiring Effie’s remarkable dedication to perfection and unique ideas for framing. She loved overhearing how excited customers were when they picked up their framed keepsakes, photographs and crafts. Ultimately her mentor decided to retire (for the second time in her busy life) and Heather did her “complete career 360” by buying the business! Heather has put her own touch on the store with a major renovation, adding retail lines, and a renaming to ROADSIDE GARAGE Art Gallery & Framing. Effie is staying on (temporarily), teaching her all aspects of the business, and remains a close friend and advisor. Heather can’t wait to get to work every day. The reward: the thrill she gets from pleasing people! 4941 49th Street Camrose, AB, T4V 1N3 780-672-5848

These are those words: “That trip was amazing!” Glenda has a passion to experience the world and in her quest to ensure her travel clients get maximum value and a multitude of positive memories from their vacation choices, she is well on her way to seeing much of it. In recent months and years she has invested deeply in terms of time and money to set foot on Regent’s new line of luxury ocean cruises; she has toured Disney properties with Disney executives. She has explored Iceland. She has expanded her travel knowledge across the dinner table talking with countless representatives of the world’s best travel and tour companies. And she has educational trips scheduled for Toronto, Italy and Spain. By knowing countries, tour operators, airlines and specific properties, only then is Glenda truly comfortable that her clients will get travel value that meets or exceeds their expectations. A couple of years ago Bridget and her son Mike decided they would like to open a business in Camrose, but they weren’t sure what kind of business to start up. Then within a few days of each other they each received olive oil/balsamic vinegar gift packs. They had found their business idea. In June of last year Vinesation Olive Oil and Vinegar Tasting Room opened with help from family and friends. It features over 40 flavors of extra virgin olive oils and balsamic vinegars, rubs and accessories. “The flavored olive oils are created either by fusing the oil at time of crushing with another flavor, such as blood orange, or it’s infused with something like garlic after it has been pressed,” says Bridget. The quality of the oil sold at Vinesation is rigorously tested continually. It is never older than 24 months, the point at which its health benefits start to deteriorate. Oils found in standard grocery stores can’t make the same claim. The feedback from customers has been outstanding and the business continues to grow as more and more are discovering the wonderful ways oils and vinegars can enrich the taste of food while providing very healthy benefits. If you’re ready to expand your culinary experience, visit Vinesation today.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson Into the marketplace
Back in the late 1980s, I took part in a Tai Chi class – sort of a moving meditation practice that is well known in many parts of Asia. One of my friends who spent years in China talked about seeing hundreds of people in parks, early every morning, all doing Tai Chi in unison. It sounded immensely powerful to be in unison with others doing the same centuries-old moves. As an introduction to us chatty and fidgety beginners, the Tai Chi instructor began with this statement. “Anyone can wear a saffron robe and go to the top of a mountain and meditate, and be grounded and centered and wise. What the world needs now is for us to come down from the mountain top and go into the marketplace and be grounded and centered and wise.” The world has changed since my Tai Chi instructor’s comment. I think it would be fair to say that in 2015, we need even more to be capable of going into whatever is happening in our world and being grounded and centered and wise. Our human species has created a perfect storm of crises and chaos. For the first time in the history of the species, we are capable of destroying ourselves, if not by warfare, then by polluting earth so it can no longer sustain us. This isn’t about saving the earth. The earth will be fine. On several previous occasions the earth has experienced cataclysmic events in which 95 per cent of species became extinct. The earth doesn’t need us or any species in order to survive and flourish. We, on the other hand, do need earth. Our species may have the technology to turn around our violence and pollution, but we don’t yet appear to have the level of maturity that would allow us to make the collective worldwide decisions that turning it around will require. So what does this have to do with the Tai Chi instructor? Through many different traditions, many of us have learned practices that help bring peace into conflict, calm in the midst of stress, that help us see a higher vision and be capable of thinking and acting beyond our immediate emotions and desires. Many of us have the capacity to think and act for the good of the whole and for the long term. None of us (at least nobody I know) is good at that all the time. But I’m feeling a greater sense of urgency to be better at applying those practices to more and more aspects of my life and our collective lives. We need to continue our contemplative practices – in fact, such practices are even more essential as part of our self-care and part of being able to access higher wisdom. We also need to get more and more adept at taking that kind of energy, wisdom and skill into whatever is our “marketplace.” I do not know how to stop the insanity of continuing to pollute the earth, fouling our own nest until it cannot sustain us. I’m not even sure I know how to bring my own personal carbon footprint down to zero. I do know that dickering over regulations while the land and water and air are killing off species is probably not going make enough difference fast enough to save us. Until we each feel some personal responsibility, and until we can operate out of love, appreciation and respect for the earth rather than perceiving the earth simply as “a natural resource for us to exploit,” the turnaround is going to be difficult. Until we see ourselves as part of and in relationship with a larger whole, rather than dominators of all that we see, the turnaround is unlikely. Okay, that’s my rant for the week. If nothing else, it’s motivating me to be more diligent and intentional about bringing peace, love and wisdom in my little corner of “the marketplace.” Height of irony: I may already have blown it with this column! If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send an e-mail to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com

What makes a community unique? What are the defining characteristics and features that set Camrose apart from other communities? Camrose was settled by many people, including Sca ndinavia ns, whose influence and legacies are still in evidence even today. Among them are The Lefse House, a popular eatery featuring authentic Scandinavian fare; the Scandinavian art form rosemaling panels featured prominently on planters on Main Street; several Lutheran churches; Augustana Faculty offering Norwegian studies; the replica Ole Bakken sod-roofed house at the Camrose and District Museum; the more than 100-year-old Camrose Ski Club; and of course the iconic ski jump. The ski jump overlooking the valley reflects and honours our winter athletes, and the grim determination and fortitude of those hardy Scandinavian pioneers. There are so many personal stories and memo-
ries of the ski jump, from students who attended what used to be Camrose Lutheran College, and other skiers in the community. The ski jumpers would draw huge crowds that lined the sides of the jump, and the valley was filled with spectators wrapped in blankets sitting in horse-drawn wagons. Today, even though it is not used, the ski jump is a comforting presence when walking, running, biking and skiing on the trails. In North America’s haste to destroy anything that is old, don’t we risk losing our heritage and history that has helped define who we are? Why would the City of Camrose even consider destroying this precious icon? Instead the city needs to preserve the ski jump to celebrate our rich Scandinavian heritage. Instead of hasty decisions made without proper due diligence, a committee needs to be struck to present a proposal on how best to preserve the ski jump. Let’s be visionaries and not regret that we neglected this most precious symbol of Camrose. Janice DePaoli, just an ordinary taxpaying Camrosian Camrose ski jump
What’s the driving force for a quick decision on the fate of the ski jump? The negative faction has been the most vocal: where are the positive, progressive thinking majority? Speak up! We know the histori-

cal, tourism value of the ski jump is there. Unfortunately, council has opted for a quick decision (Sept. 8); for what reason we can only imagine. The ski scaffold has been in its present state for twenty-five years with little or no maintenance, forgotten or ignored. The thought of making it usable for other than what it was constructed has only recently surfaced. Surely there is enough merit in considering the possibilities to extend the time for a decision to be made. We need to pursue all avenues, historical societies, tourism departments, government grants, etc. Money is squandered on projects with much less significance than our “icon.” We extend an invitation to discuss the merits of saving the ski jump. BATTLE RIVER SCHOOL DIVISION #31 SCHOOL OPENING INFORMATION 2015-16 SCHOOL YEAR
Our Mission The Battle River School Division, in partnership with parents and the community, will ensure that each student acquires the necessary knowledge, skills, and core values to be a caring, productive member of our democratic society.
SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE
SCHOOL YEAR CALENDAR
On behalf of the teachers, administrators, and support staff, I would like to welcome each and every student to Battle River School Division for the 2015-2016 school year. This year staff will continue to strive to achieve our vision: Every Student, Every Day, A Success by providing a holistic educational experience focused on the academic, character and relationship development of each student. As a school division, we will emphasize the following priorities for the coming year: 1. Literacy 2. Numeracy 3. 21st century learning 4. Welcoming and Caring school environments We believe this is an exciting time for education in Alberta. Battle River School Division is entering its 20th year of providing educational service to students and we anticipate that the year will bring many rewards and successes for each student in BRSD. Rita Marler, Superintendent of Schools
PROFESSIONAL LEARNING DAY
Schools will be closed on August 27, 2015 to permit all staff to participate in learning opportunities that will better prepare them to serve students. Division Office will remain open.
NEW REGISTRATIONS
Students new to Battle River School Division #31 should register at the school they will be attending and provide a birth certificate when registering.
BUSING SERVICE
The first day of busing for all students will be Tuesday, September 1, 2015.
Students residing in Beaver County, Camrose County and Flagstaff County Students new to these areas should register for bus service by calling the Transportation Department at 780-672-6131 extension #5244, or 1-800-262-4869 extension #5244, well in advance of school opening so that efficient routes can be planned. Students who were transported to a Division-operated school by bus during the last school year will be included in our plans for the 2015-2016 school year. Any questions regarding attendance areas and/or eligibility for busing should be directed to the transportation department.
Students residing in the City of Camrose Ward Transportation will be provided for students within the City of Camrose on the following basis: • Eligible students (those who live further than 2.4 kilometers from their designated school), will be served first at no cost. Reminder: bus passes must be picked up at division office; students will be expected to produce their bus passes upon entering the bus. • Non-eligible students (those who live closer than 2.4 kilometers from their designated school) will be served next, on a first-come, first-served basis, for an annual fee of $395.00 per student in grades 1-12, or $355.50 per ECS student. Registration for busing of non-eligible students will be confirmed upon receipt of the applicable fee. Reminder: students will be expected to produce their bus passes upon entering the bus. • Bus Passes are sold as a year pass, no half-passes or winter passes will be sold. • We now accept cash, cheque, Visa, Mastercard and Debit. Battle River School Division #31 will be accepting registrations for busing in the City of Camrose from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. during the week of August 17-21, 2015 at the following address: 5402-48A Avenue, Camrose. Any questions regarding attendance areas and/or eligibility for busing should be directed to the transportation department.
Due to longer instructional days, most “Feeder Schools” have additional ‘feeder days’ on which students will not be in attendance. Holden, Ryley, Allan Johnstone and Cornerstone Christian School are operating with a four-day week. Principals at “Feeder Schools” and at the four-day week schools will likely distribute a slightly modified school year calendar.

Council approves funds for Alberta Culture Days By Dan Jensen
City council has granted $2,000 from the Camrose Community Events account to the Camrose Arts Society to assist with this fall’s Alberta Culture Days celebration. Camrose Arts Society has been organizing Alberta Culture Days events since 2009 with support from Alberta Culture, the City of Camrose and a number of community partners. “Alberta Culture Days provides an opportunity for citizens of all ages and socio-economic backgrounds to come together to enjoy a variety of arts and cultural presentations for free,” said Camrose Arts Society president Theo Thirsk in an April 30 letter to Mayor Norm Mayer and members of council. “We believe it is beneficial for our citizens and local artists.” The celebration will get underway at the Bailey Theatre on Friday, Sept. 25 with a performance by Dungarees, a band nominated for an Edmonton Music Award. Saturday highlights will include a Street Performers’ Festival on Main Street, which will be closed to traffic (similar to Jaywalkers’ Jamboree), a cultural scavenger hunt, free art classes at the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre, activities at Camrose Public Library and a special performance at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. “We felt we would just concentrate on two days and make the Street Performers’ Festival the main focus,” said City of Camrose arts director Jane Cherry-Lemire in a presentation to Committee of the Whole Council May 19. “It will focus on arts and culture and fit very well with the Camrose slogan The Stage is Set.” The City of Camrose has traditionally received $5,000 a year from Alberta Culture as an Alberta Culture Days host community. Five Alberta communities receive $20,000 in government funding as feature communities, while several others receive $1,000. “Each year we apply as a feature community, but have only been successful in becoming a host community,” said Thirsk. “Although it would be amazing to gain the feature community designation, there are no guarantees. We need to put our best feet forward and show what Camrose has to offer. Everything we offer becomes part of the overall calendar that shows what each community is doing across Alberta.” The City of Camrose Community Events account has a balance of $33,000. The cost of holding this year’s Alberta Culture Days is approximately $10,000.

Camrose Sea Serpent sets new provincial record By Dan Jensen
Ten-year-old Camrose Sea Serpent Grayce Flemming didn’t just break the provincial record in the girls’ nine and ten 200 metre free competition at the Regional Swim Meet at Wainwright Aug. 7 to 9, she destroyed it. Flemming posted a time of 2:31:27, more than three seconds faster than the previous record of 2:34:73. Flemming knew going into the race the record was within her reach. “I was going to try (to break it) and if I did I did and if I didn’t I didn’t,” she said. “I tried to pace myself off the girl who was swimming beside me in lane three because I knew she was pretty fast.” Camrose Sea Serpents coach Shane Gau couldn’t say enough about Flemming’s strong performance. “It is pretty amazing,” he said. “She has only been in the swim club for three years and for someone to break a record within his or her first three years doesn’t happen very often. She has been going up against swimmers who have six or seven years of swim experience.” The girl who had the
record previously has set other records all the way through her age groupings. “The girl she took the record from is a tremendous swimmer,”” said Gau, “so to beat her record by more than three seconds is a pretty big accomplishment.” Gau said Flemming is one of the Camrose Sea Serpents’ hardest working swimmers. “She is extremely dedicated and doesn’t miss any practices,” he said. “She doesn’t take any sets off and that is what it takes to become a champion. She definitely has a passion for the sport. You can definitely see it in her face. She can hardly wait to get into the pool and she is one of the last ones to leave.” Gau also had praise for Flemming’s parents for their commitment in getting Grayce and her sister, Shaye (who won gold at regionals in the girls’ nine and ten 100 metre medlay relay and girls’ 10 and under 100 metre relay, as well as a bronze in the girls’ nine and ten 25 metre fly), to the pool for practices and to competitions. “They drive them in from out of town (near Rosalind) every day and
are extremely dedicated,” he said. “I am glad that both their daughters are doing extremely well in the swim club.” Flemming was the top seeded swimmer in the 200 metre free in the nine and ten age group going into the Alberta Summer Swim Association’s provincial competition in Edmonton this past weekend, holding a ten second lead over the next closest swimmer. “My goal is to beat my record again,” she said before hitting the pool again for one of her final tuneups. “I know I am going to have to push hard.” Gau feels that Flemming has all the attributes that are needed to have even more success. “She is a strong girl for her age, is extremely fit and has the good genetics,” he said. “She aborbs everything the coaches say and has a very nice freestyle stroke.” Flemming will be disappointed when the the Sea Serpents’ season comes to an end. “It is what I do all summer long and it is my joy,” she said. “My goal is to keep improving and to be able to keep up with the older swimmers.”
Grayce Flemming bites down on the gold medal she won after setting a new provincial record at regionals.
Sea Serpents place first at regionals in Wainwright By Dan Jensen The Camrose Sea Serpents dominated the pool at the Regional Swim Meet at Wainwright Aug. 7 to 9. The summer swimming club won 78 gold medals, 61 silver medals and 64 bronze medals to finish on top of the overall standings with 846 points, 251 points more than the second place club and 267 points more than the team in third. “I teared up a little bit afterwards,” said Camrose Sea Serpents coach Shane Gau. “We have never won a regional competition before and it is not something that just happens.” The Camrose Sea Sepents club has strength at every age group. “In order to win a regional competition you need to have points coming from every single age group, from both boys and girls,” said Gau. “Our master club swimmers (18 and over) have been winning competitions across the province all summer long and is going into provincials with a good shot to win that category.” The Camrose Sea Serpents have a solid coaching staff that help the swimmers get the most from their abilities. “I have been with the club the longest, but we also have some great assistant coaches that have helped to

get us to where we are,” said Gau. “We take a total team approach and have some of our older swimmers that are now assistant coaches or mentors to the younger ones.” Forty-eight swimmers qualified for the provincials in Edmonton, Aug. 14 to 16. The region of which the Camrose Sea Serpents are a part has 11 clubs, including Edmonton Huma, Edmonton Derrick, Vermilion, Lloydminster, Edmonton Masters,

With such close family ties, the two did not have much privacy during their courting. However, Pearl had a key to the store where they retreated during a severe winter storm on February 14, 1943. Edwin proposed to Pearl at the store on Valentine’s Day and that is how their love story began. Ed and Pearl were married on October 24, 1943 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church following the Sunday morning service. Pearl’s dad Andrew requested that the wedding take place on a Sunday so that he did not have to stop harvesting. Pearl’s family always treated Sunday as a day of rest and spent it together as a family. Ed and Pearl moved to Armena where they began farming and, soon after, started their family. They were blessed with four children: Karen (1944), Dale (1946), Dell (1951) and Brian (1953). Ed and Pearl cherished time spent with family and friends. They enjoyed day trips to Miquelon Lake, tenting holidays to visit relatives, and Sunday visits with neighbors and friends. Time spent together as a family was a priority. In 1965, after Karen and Dale were out on their own, Ed and Pearl, along with Dell and Brian, moved to Stettler, AB. They enjoyed 15 years in Stettler while Ed worked for Gulf Oil. They cherished the friendships they made in Stettler, their church family and friends. Ed and Pearl were avid campers, loved the outdoors and took every opportunity to travel. One of their most memorable adventures was to Norway and Sweden in 1979 to research each of their family histories. In 1980, Ed and Pearl moved to Camrose until Ed retired in 1985. Together with friends and family, they spent their golden years of retirement travelling to Hawaii, Alaska and throughout the United States, but were most happy when spending weekends camping at The Ponderosa (the Petersen farm near Armena) with Ed’s brother Evert and his wife Ruth. Together, they entertained friends and family every chance they got. Pearl’s family, faith and friendships were most important to her. She was a gracious hostess, an effortless cook and loved to bake. Family dinners were a highlight for both her and her family. Prior to Pearl’s passing, she resided at Sunrise Village in Camrose, AB for nearly three years. Ed and Pearl’s enduring love story was clear when Pearl said, “I love you” to Ed, and then peacefully passed away on August 6, 2015 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose, AB. Pearl was a wonderful mother, an active grandmother, and loyal friend who loved unconditionally. She was blessed to have celebrated 71 years of marriage with Ed by her side. Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband Edwin Grue; daughter Karen Hansen; sons Dale Grue (Donna), Dell Grue (Jo) and Brian Grue (Pat); seven grandchildren Lori Hansen (Brad), Cathy Mowat (Wade), Jennifer Trydal (Chris), Michael Grue (Raquel), Waylon Grue, Kyra Grue and Liam Grue; and six great-grandchildren Wyatt Mowat, Mason Trydal, Amy Mowat, Nevaya Grue, Adelina Trydal and Ayden Grue. Pearl is also survived by her sisters-in-law Ruth Grue and Madelaine Williams; brother-in-law Marvin Grue; and numerous nephews, nieces and friends. Pearl was predeceased by her parents Andrew and Amy Williams; and her brothers Lloyd and Clayton. We Will Always Remember You…. A Funeral Service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 from Messiah Lutheran Church with Rev. David Eriksson officiating. Interment has taken place in the Scandia Lutheran Cemetery. If friends and family so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute, Messiah Lutheran Church in Camrose, AB, The Gideons International in Canada or a charity of your choice. Festival celebrates aquatic life
Where is a penny when you need one?
Am I the only one that misses the penny? Those beautiful copper coins, that like so many other people, I stockpiled in jars to convince myself of my growing wealth. I would spend a nickel to get four pennies back, because I could not save a nickel as easily as four pennies. I never walked past a penny on the ground without bending to pick it up. (It wasn’t so much that I needed the money, but I read in Reader’s Digest once that a fat man would not bend over for less than a quarter!) The penny was there to convince me of my good health and my fine physique. (Keep reading after you stop laughing.) A pocket full of pennies that required suspenders to hold my pants up, allowed me to believe that I had lots of money. It jingled and jangled as I walked, and sounded like real money. (Actually, the copper was worth more than the face value of the coins themselves.) That noise allowed me to think that I was prosperous. When the jars collecting the pennies were filled, I gathered my family and had a coin rolling party. For any coins more than a penny, the parties would have been few and far between. Pennies allowed that our family bonding over coin rolling parties could occur with much greater frequency. Where is a penny when you need one? That lowly copper coin was a valuable part of my life. The penny provided for me a savings plan that I could easily adhere to on a daily basis. That savings plan allowed me to watch my savings grow in the various jars suited to my purpose. The penny provided the physical exercise that allowed me to stay convinced of good health in spite of other evidence to the contrary. I still stoop for other coins, but based on the infrequency of finding those higher value coins, my exercise program has suffered greatly. Fifty pennies made more of a jingle than two quarters. I miss the illusion of my prosperity. Both the sound in my pocket and the jars filling up gave me a certain sense of wellbeing. Did you ever hear of a cell phone rolling party? No. Family bonding over rolling pennies into those impossible wrappers after neatly stacking them into piles of fifty was a real bonding time. Nickels, dimes, quarters, loonies and toonies would work as well – but not nearly as often. So then, it is the doing away with the penny that has cost me my savings plan, it has cost me my health and exercise plan, it has shattered my sense of well-being, and it has interfered with my family bonding times. I blame the government for eliminating the “common cents” that were so important to who I am and who I am becoming. On the other hand, maybe if I (if we) applied some “common sense” in our daily lives, our savings, our health, our well-being and our families would all stand to benefit.

The event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 22 at Miquelon Lake Provincial Park. By Laurel Nadon
Connecting people with their land and water while fostering an attitude of conservation will be the focus of the day when the Battle River Watershed Alliance hosts its upcoming sixth annual watershed festival. The event, planned for Saturday, Aug. 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will be held at Miquelon Lake Provincial Park and will bring together both fun and educational activities. The festival fits the alliance’s mandate of helping people to recognize the watershed where they live and appreciate it, said Nathalie Olson, education and outreach coordinator for the watershed alliance. “To have a healthy watershed, we need everyone to work together. Everyone has a role to play to ensure clean and abundant water, healthy soils, plant and animal biodiversity, and resilient communities, so we hope by offering these events, people can experience and enjoy their watershed and realize their own potential for being a steward,” Olson said. She noted that over time, the more appreciation people have for their watershed, the more they will take personal steps to protect it. “Especially for young people, the more that they have a hands-on experience, the more that they’ll remember,” Olson said. “For adults, we spend so much time in our heads, when we get to have hands-on experiences, we can integrate what we’ve learned into our memories.” Activities will include crafts and games for children such as making rainsticks, mobiles, painting rocks and building birdhouses. At the floating dock, members of
the Alberta Lake Management Society will collect water samples and bugs. “Kids and adults will be able to have a hands-on experience getting into that lake area,” Olson said. The water will be tested for pH levels, dissolved oxygen, temperature and clarity using AWQA kits (Alberta Water Quality Awareness). Brad Peter, program manager with the Alberta Lake Management Society, said that typically they do an activity with aquatic invertebrates during an outreach program. They will use zoo plankton nets and teach about what insects they find, why they’re important, and what creatures they will turn into. “We’re always trying to stress that activities we do on the land have the potential to impact our water,” Peter said. “It’s really cool to get out in the community and engage people and see them become more interested in their lakes.” He said they hope to broaden people’s understanding of what’s in the lake, as well as create discussion on how to determine the health of our lakes and streams. The event will also include free hot dogs and other food, as well as homemade pies by the Dinner Deva, using Elaine Hook’s winning pie recipe from the watershed alliance’s pie baking contest held in July. Olson will lead outdoor yoga, and students from the University of Alberta, Augustana campus will lead activities at the research station which was built this year. The festival is held in a different location each year so that different community members can come together for the event. “We like to work with
people from across the watershed from different organizations, sectors and walks of life,” Olson said. “This is a way we can meet people we don’t often get to meet.” She noted that there are many existing activities and infrastructure at Miquelon Lake Provincial Park that can be utilized, such as the picnic shelter and information centre. The festival goes hand in hand with the park’s mandate to protect and preserve ecosystems, said Isabella Hodson, visitor services supervisor at Miquelon Lake Provincial Park. “It’s a wonderful mutual opportunity to further our goals and to invite the public to enjoy some of our special places in Alberta that are for all of us. We lead busy lives and a lot of us are indoors for the majority (of our time).” She added that there are many studies showing we have nature-deficit disorder, a term coined by Richard Louv. “To be out in nature, doing activities that connect you with nature, whether it’s pond-dipping or colouring a nature scene, we think about these landscapes that are around us,” Hodson said, adding that they hope to send festival participants home with a conservation message mirroring the Alberta Parks’ goals of discover, value, protect and enjoy. The Battle River Watershed covers 30,000 square kilometers and includes Battle Lake and Pigeon Lake, extending south to Lacombe, Bashaw and Stettler and north through Hay Lakes, Viking and Wainwright. More information on the festival is available at www.battleriverwatershed. ca

Prairie Fun Days
If you need hail damage repair to your vehicle, we’re here for you. Wow! Now thats a body shop.
By Dan Jensen
There will be no shortage of things to see, or places to go during Prairie Fun Days Aug. 22 and 23. “We will be the same size as last year, but we are going to have a few new things that should add interest,” explained Prairie Fun Days coordinator Janine Carroll. Prairie Fun Days is a self-guided driving excursion that made its debut five years ago as a way for people to explore all that Camrose County has to offer. “The people who have been a part of it have found it to be a tremendous experience,” said Carroll. “They find it is a great way to see the historic sites that are normally closed or that, because of costs, cannot stay open all the time.” Prairie Fun Days attractions include bed and breakfasts, market gardens, former schools, museums, historic churches and airports. The Railway Museum at Meeting Creek holds train rides and provides entertainment (second day), while Alberta’s Littlest Airport has a fly-in and free corn roast. “Experience friendly, down-home hospitality, special events and scrumptious goodies all weekend,” said Carroll. “View some extraordinary country churches, each architecturally and historically unique. Take a tour of the St. Thomas Church burial grounds. Built in 1883, this historic site pre-dates most county communities. Peek into the past, hear about Father Beillevaire and early Metis settlement of Duhamel. Visit several one-room schoolhouses, a railway station and elevator, fire hall (where the infamous Robert Raymond Cook was jailed), and help celebrate the 100th birthday of the Bashaw Majestic Theatre. Visit Ferintosh Manor and the Rosebush Lodge bed and breakfasts. Located on opposite sides of the county, they are each lovingly restored from pioneer homes and provide extraordinary accommodation.” Fridhem Baptist Church will be welcoming visitors to an old fashioned country church ecumenical service at 11 a.m. on Sunday. A highlight of the 2015 event included rides on the People Mover at Hay Lakes’ Telegraph Park. “It gave people a behind-the-scenes look at the park, including the solar powered scouting cabin,” said Carroll. Maps of the Prairie Fun Days route are available at both Camrose museums, the Camrose Visitor Information Centre, and many local businesses. They are also available on the Prairie Fun Days website, prairiefundays.com, or on Facebook. All aboard Those who wish to leave the driving to someone else can book a ride on the Prairie Cruiseline. “It is great value for the tourism dollar,” said Carroll. “A one-day adventure is only $25, while a two-day adventure is just $45. This includes lunch each day, snacks, wine tasting, beer tasting, a comfortable seat on a deluxe coach, and site entry fees (where applicable).” The 2015 bus is about 80 per cent sold out. Spots may be reserved by calling 780-608-6243.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Let’s go cycling Deanna Trzeciakowski, Kinesiologist, H.BSc Brought to you by the Camrose Healthy Lifestyle Coalition
Earlier this year, Active Kids Canada released its annual report card ranking on their capacity to meet the physical activity recommendations imposed by Canada’s Physical Activity Guidelines. Physical activity is a critical component to a healthy lifestyle – it helps children develop their motor skills, independence, muscular strength and confidence. It also helps in disease prevention, weight management, bone mineral density improvement (which could help in further preventing diseases such as osteoporosis and osteopenia from showing their ugly faces down the road) and overall mental health. Shockingly, Canadian children were given a D minus for both sedentary behaviour and overall physical activity. We need to do something about this! Jubilee Park, Stoney Creek Park and Mirror Lake have a combined 11 km of paved multiuse trails that are perfect for escaping the busy city life. Cycling in particular has a lot of perks: it’s environmentally friendly, a great family activity, a great workout for all of your leg muscles, and most of all – it’s fun! At the beginning of June, the Camrose Healthy Lifestyle Coalition installed three new bike racks as an effort to remove barriers to physical activity. These racks are located at the Stoney Creek Centre, the Chuck McLean Centre and the Gateway Centre. We will also be having a fourth rack installed at Jubilee Park once the construction finishes. Cycling helps to work all of the muscles of the legs – your quadriceps (thighs), hamstrings (back of the leg), glutes (buttock muscles) and gastrocs (calves) – without a high impact on the knees. Furthermore, riding a bike requires balance and coordination, making it an excellent opportunity to work on core strength. Finally, any cross country skiers or runners in the crowd? Cycling is a great cross-training method to minimize the impact put on your knees and ankles while running, but still work the same muscle groups you would in either sport! Why not go for a bike ride as a family? If you are taking your little one out for a ride, please: educate them on the rules of the road, and encourage them to look both ways before crossing the street; ensure that they are wearing a properly fitting helmet (fitting snug on the head with the rim of the helmet resting just above the eyebrows, and no more than a finger width being able to fit in between the strap and your child’s chin); ensure that the bike fits the child properly (feet touching the ground, knees not touching the handlebars when the child is pedaling), and the handlebars are not too far forward (the child should not have to reach far for them). Is your child struggling to ride a two wheel bike? If your child is between Grades 2 and 8 and is unable to ride a two-wheel bike, Alberta Health Service’s You Can Ride Two program might be a great fit! As it is in high demand, it is recommended that you phone in to register your child early, as space is limited. To register or to learn more about the program, you can contact Erin Branton at 780-608-8637. If you are introducing your child to cycling: ensure that you teach your child how to ride in an area without traffic or obstacles; hold onto the back of their seat instead of their handlebars. Pack a lunch and soak up the sun on a day cycling trip. Try and find more of Camrose’s hidden trails that you might not have found while walking because they were too far. Pedal away the lazy days and make the most of the remainder of the summer. Let’s go cycling!

UNIDIRECTIONAL FLUSHING PROGRAM
Why the City of Camrose is implementing the Unidirectional Flushing (UDF) Program: 1. To maintain and improve the City’s water quality. 2. To improve water flow and pressure in the water distribution system. 3. To reduce bacterial growth, restore disinfectant residual, and improve water color. 4. Unidirectional Flushing uses 40% less water than traditional flushing programs due to increased water velocity. 5. In addition to scouring the water pipes, the UDF Program also gives the City the opportunity to check, exercise, and maintain all water valves and hydrants. The UDF program began July 9, 2015, starting with Zone A and will continue for 2-3 months. Water service should not be disrupted during the flushing process. There may be a slight drop in pressure or a presence of discoloration in the water from the minerals and sediments being flushed from the pipes. If discoloration is noticed, please turn the tap off for 15 minutes and flush from your bathtub tap until the water is clear. If there are any questions or concerns in regards to the Unidirectional Flushing Program please feel free to contact Emma Knapik at the City of Camrose Engineering Department at 780-672-4428. For additional information please visit the City of Camrose website at www.camrose.ca.

Great selection of new homes
Matthew Mayer
By Murray Green Some of the best views of the valley can be seen from the new Zetsen Master Builders homes in the beautiful Creekview subdivision. Various quality built homes with many options in the attractive southern area of the city are appealing for families who want to have a community atmosphere near fantastic playgrounds and the impressive walking trail system. A variety of floor plans in many stages of construction offer bright kitchens with stunning counter tops, centre islands and plenty of cabinets. Some of the homes are available immediately, while others are under construction. Two of the beautiful homes have impressive walkouts. Choose from spacious living rooms with fireplaces, vaulted ceilings and open floor plans. Dining areas are often built with extended family in mind for special occasions. Large comfortable master bedrooms are
normal with these family-minded homes. The extra closet room and larger ensuites make living easy. Secondary good sized bedrooms, beautiful bathrooms and laundry rooms are also very appealing. Most basements are left open for the new owners to finish in a style that meets their family needs. Large front attached double garages are standard on most homes to accommodate your vehicles. Garden doors lead to the back yard that usually has an attractive deck. Each new home includes a one year contractors' warranty and new home warranty. Call today to choose your layout and price that fits your budget. Be sure to view several beautiful family homes in Creekview.
