Earnshaw memorial unveiled By Murray Green
Camrose honoured RCAF flying officer Ken Earnshaw with a memorial project at the Camrose and District Centennial Museum. The museum society, together with the idea and work of the Camrose and Area Men’s Shed organized the project, that was dedicated on July 11, led by emcee Deb Trout of the museum society. Earnshaw’s niece Margaret Danielson of Calgary spoke about Ken and grand niece Clorissa Danielson Hall of Red Deer sang at the event. “Both Ken and sister
Nora were school teachers that worked in the Bashaw district. At some point Ken decided to enlist in the air force. He went to Edmonton to the recruiting station. He was contacted to fly a special mission called the Upkeep Bomb. It was a top secret mission to fly over Germany. They practiced flying 50 feet above the ground, not knowing what, when or why they were doing it. They were never told. It wasn’t until the day of the mission that they were told to take out three large dams in Germany,” said Margaret. The planes left knowing some might not make it back. Two of his crew sur-

vived, while Ken did not. Bomb aimer, F/Sgt J.W. Fraser and rear gunner P/O A.F. Burcher DFM, both survived the crash, and were taken prisoners of war. “Although damaged by this loss, my family was very proud. This will keep his memory alive,” said Margaret. The monument at the museum grounds was located directly in front of the Likeness School, which was relocated from south of Ohaton to the museum in 1966 and was the start of Earnshaw’s education journey. Kenneth Earnshaw was born in Bridlington, Yorkshire, England, on June 23, 1918, the son of Joseph George Earnshaw and Janet Hannah Green. Earnshaw had participated in 30 combat operations as a navigator prior to joining #617 Squadron on April 29, 1943. During the early morning hours of May 17, 1943, Lancaster ED 925, while participating in the Dambusters raid on the Mohne Dam, was set on fire and crashed about three miles southwest of Soest, Germany. The highly successful raid on the Mohne Dam claimed Earnshaw’s life, he was 24 years old. He is interred at the Rheinberg War Cemetery in Germany.

Dear Tony... Dear Tony, last Thursday I read the not-apology your communications people crafted. You signed it, “Sincerely, Tony.” Under the hand-written “Tony,” was your name and title: Tony Staffieri, president and CEO, Rogers Communications. The not-apology appeared as a full page ad in daily newspapers–six days after Rogers Communications systems shut down for about 15 hours. After six days of silence, I was a little surprised. I didn’t know we were on a first-name basis, Tony. When I began reading your letter, I expected that, as CEO, you would apologize for the immense and costly outage Rogers Communications caused millions of Canadians. You didn’t. I’m not a Rogers customer so I assumed I would not be affected by the outage. Turns out Rogers is the telecom my bank uses. That meant I could not access any of my accounts or use my debit card, Tony. Many hours after the outage began, I was underwhelmed the first time I saw a Rogers spokesperson finally acknowledge the problem and said, “We don’t know what’s causing the problem.” I was even more underwhelmed later. I learned that, with over 11 million customers and 2.25 million retail subscribers, Rogers has no back-up system to kick in when there’s an outage. Wha-a-a-t? Officially the shutdown lasted about 15 hours. However, just because Rogers’ systems started functioning again doesn’t mean the banks and merchants and debit card holders could immediately restore services. I could not access bank accounts or use a debit card for two days. I was merely inconvenienced. But millions of businesses small and large could not process transactions. Who knows how much income they lost? Millions of individuals could not use their Rogers cell phones. With potentially lifeand-death risks, some people could not access Rogersbased 911 emergency call centres. The outage was a big wake-up call, Tony. I’d assumed that, like utility companies, telecoms had agreements to ensure that if one telecom is down, another one can cover off. It’s a relief to know the Canadian government is now forcing you to work with other telecoms to change that. Would have been even nicer if you’d thought of it yourself. Back to your not-apology letter, Tony. You said, “You have my personal commitment that Rogers will make every change and investment needed to help ensure that it will not happen again.” Frankly, your personal commitment does not make me feel confident. During the outage, Rogers did not communicate at all for many hours. When someone from Rogers finally did communicate, the person I saw stated that Rogers knew there was a problem but did not know the source of the problem. Later, “maintenance” was mentioned as a possible source of the problem. And then you personally waited six days to not apologize. This does not inspire confidence in the value of your personal commitment, Tony. I’m guessing you wish the outage had not happened at this time. Right now, you’re trying to convince Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to allow Rogers to purchase Shaw Communications. In March 2022, CRTC conditionally approved the sale. Conditions related to the sale being of benefit to Canadians. It’s easy to see what’s in it for you, Tony. Market share! More money! It’s not so easy to see what’s in it for Canadians. That includes people like me–not even Rogers customers–who didn’t until now know that we may be dependent on Rogers to be able to phone 911 or access banking information. Now that you’ve angered the Canadian government, it’s possible the Rogers-Shaw deal could be in jeopardy. In your letter, you said, “We can and will do better.” Uh huh. We’ll see. You know what else I’d like, Tony? I’d like an actual apology. One more thing. I’m now even more keenly aware of how dependent we all are on Internet and other systems that may be more fragile than we imagined. ***
I’d love to hear from you. If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send an email to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com. I’ll happily reply within one business day.
Camrose Fire Department heats up a block party By Murray Green
Camrose Fire Department firefighters Lieutenants Nic Sampson and Sean Johnston, and Firefighters Angelina Terpstra and Randy Degenstein added to the fun of the culde-sac block party of 61A
Street and 35 Avenue on July 9. Children could explore a fire truck and meet some of the local fire department members. The firefighters explained some of their gear and equipment,
and spent the afternoon mingling with 30 adults and 13 children. The children were super excited to share in the wonderment of sitting in the seats of a real fire truck and spraying each other with mini hoses.

• Camrose Rotarian and City Engineer Ted Gillespie, assisted by Todd Saunders, installed a new fountain on Mirror Lake. The fountain was purchased by the Camrose Rotary Club from Oak Creek Golf and Turf in Calgary, at a cost of $15,000. The previous fountain was purchased from the Boeing Manufacturing Company, also of Calgary, twenty-one years previously, for $12,000. Conducting the original installation were Rotary Club members Dr. Ken Rayment and Marvin LaBarge. • The Camrose and District Horticultural Society’s Rose City Rose Show attracted 88 rose and 37 lily entries in a variety of different classes. Anita Baier and Joan Tod were named Queen and Princess of the show, respectively, for having the best and second best rose entries. It was the second year in a row that Baier had been named Queen of the show. Joan Tod was named Grand Aggregate Champion for having the most points in a combination of categories. • Bruce Peterson of Ryley delivered the ten millionth bushel of grain to Legacy Junction. The facility which just opened a year and a half ago, has a 1.2 million bushel capacity. It has handled 275,000 tonnes since last August and is aiming for 375,000 tonnes by next year.
• Twenty-two Alberta farm families from Red Deer north will be guests of the Edmonton Exhibition Association on July 24. Among them will be: The Robert Woods Family, Camrose; The Gordon H. Spiller Family, Daysland; and The Algot S. Hultholm Family, Holden. Winners of the Exhibition Association’s Alberta Farm Family Awards are recognized as being representatives of the province’s thriving agricultural industry. Selection is made by Boards of Trade and Chambers of Commerce in designated areas, on the basis of contributions to agriculture and community life. • Something unique happened on 58th Street just south of the C.P.R. Instead of asking “Why don’t they do something?” they said “Why don’t we build a little park on the strip of city-owned land in front of our homes?” And they did just that! The neighbours involved in the unique project were: The Bruce Campbells, Ron Pooles, Zeb Brewers, Ernest Humbkes, Sim Hagers and Bernard Pedersens. • Visitors at the Camrose and District Museum continue to “pour in”. Every 500th visitor receives a souvenir gift. Pretty little Shelly Badry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Badry, was the 2500th visitor and received a gift from the museum society, represented by Mrs. J.L. Sparling.

Violent and serious crime has intensified since the Liberals took office in 2015. Driven by a failed, double-pronged approach of being soft-on-crime, while simultaneously stomping on the rights of law-abiding Canadians, the Liberals have managed to jeopardize the safety of Canadians more than ever before. In the past few weeks, reports of political interference in the senseless killing of 22 people by a deranged gunman have inundated headlines across the nation. The written notes of Nova Scotia RCMP Supt. Darren Campbell, which was released as part of the Mass Casualty Commission probe, shows that in the early stages of the investigation, RCMP Commissioner, Brenda Lucki, pressured the RCMP referencing promises she made to the minister and the Prime Minister. It is alarming to see once again just how low the Liberals will sink to push their agenda. Many of the firearms used by gangs to terrorize our communities and to conduct numerous types of illegal activity are smuggled from the United States or from other points of entry. Illegal gun trafficking is a major issue that is largely overlooked in the context of the Liberals’ public safety policy. Preventing criminals from attaining weapons before they can commit violence should be the objective. The circumstances surrounding Bill C-21 are further proof of the Liberals’ commitment to ignoring evidence on their political crusade to ban firearms. We want to see action on violent crime by all sides, but the Liberals and their public safety minister need to put egos and partisanship aside for the sake of Canadians. While this is clear, the Liberals continue to take firearms away from those who follow the law and are also amending the criminal code to reduce penalties for serious crimes; ironically, this includes crimes committed with firearms (in a Bill known as C-5). The Trudeau government is pushing law-abiding firearm owners into a corner while allowing violent recidivists to ravage communities, profit from the misery of others and victimize Canadians. My caucus colleagues and I have, and will continue to support, an evidence-based firearms policy. It’s time that Canada had a government that respects those who follow the rules, puts real criminals behind bars, targets repeat offenders, gangs, organized crime and those involved in the smuggling of illegal guns. I will continue to fight against the Trudeau government’s vilification and attacks on law-abiding firearms owners, and their hug-a-thug way of governance that prioritizes offenders over victims. Good folks who have lawfully acquired firearms and have PALs and RPALs are examples of good policy at work; while criminals who smuggle guns across the border for the purposes of illegal activity and commit serious crimes have made it loud and clear that they are not concerned with public safety. It is an honour to serve as the Member of Parliament for Battle River-Crowfoot, and to stand up for the folks here at home and law-abiding firearms owners across Canada. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this column, you are encouraged to write Damien at 4945-50th Street, Camrose, Alberta, T4V 1P9, call 780-608-4600, text 403-575-5625, or e-mail damien.kurek@parl.gc.ca. Cougars prepare for provincials By Murray Green
The Camrose Cougars U18 team had a rough weekend against the Edmonton Padres and St. Albert Cardinals, July 9 and 10. Camrose dropped a 14-2 game to the Cardinals after surrendering the lead in the opening inning. Nick Hilgersom, Jared Bendfeld, Cam Wolbeck, Jake Popowich and Chance Morbeck all had one hit to lead Camrose on offence. Carter Klapak took the loss for the Cougars. The lefty allowed three hits and seven runs over one inning. Camrose were shut out 10-0 by the same Cardinals. A single by Hilgersom in the third inning was the highlight, as the Cougars only produced three hits in the contest. Pitcher Dylan Soch took the loss for Camrose by going four and a third innings, allowing 10 hits and 10 runs, while striking out two. The Padres beat Camrose 10-1 on a strong first inning. Hilgersom and Max Logelin each collected one hit to lead Camrose at the dish. Jackson Goossen started the game allowing nine hits and five runs over five innings, striking out three. Justin Pederson and Justin Kushnerick entered the game as relief pitchers, throwing one inning each. In the first game, the Pa-

Wolbeck and Quinton Nogue each had RBls in the frame. Morbeck took the loss for Camrose by tossing two innings, allowing three hits and seven runs, while striking out two. The Cougars defeated the Parkland Twins 15-5 on July 7. Camrose scored on a single by Morbeck, a triple by Logelin and a groundout by Pederson in the first inning. Eric Elines had a home run in the second inning. Logelin, Griffin Van Petten, Wolbeck, Morbeck, Elines, and Hilgersom each collected multiple hits. Logelin led Camrose with three hits in four trips to the plate. Van Petten recorded two stolen bases, as the team
ran wild on the base paths with five thefts. Dylan Soch was credited with the victory for Camrose as the pitcher lasted three and two-thirds innings, allowing nine hits and five runs, while striking out two with no walks. Kushnerick threw one and one-third innings in relief out of the bullpen. In other games, Camrose lost 12-2 to Red Deer, won 7-3, 7-2 and 11-2 over the Neutral Hills Wranglers and lost 7-5 to Neutral Hills in a four-game set. The Camrose Cougars U15 lost to Saskatoon Giants, Moose Jaw Canucks and Regina Wolfpack during the Saskatoon tournament on July 8 to 10. The teams are now preparing for provincials, which will be held in later July.

camroselive.ca | 780-608-2922 Shumka emerges with seven acts By Murray Green The Ukrainian Shumka Dancers will be holding a workshop entitled Emerge in three days to prepare for a seven-part July 22, 7:30 p.m. show at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. “This project is one that we have been talking about for a number of years. We just got started and then COVID-19 came up so it was put on the back burner until now. In talking with Nick Beach, he suggested this would be the perfect artists in residency program. They give us access to their tech crew, all of their production equipment, the theatre for a few days and we can test out new works by our dancers,” said Darka Tarnawsky, executive director for Ukrainian Shumka Dancers and Shumka School of Dance. “At the end of the week,
we will have seven brand new pieces, most of which won’t have been choreographed before. This time they get to do the director, creating and dancing in the show,” she added. “It is a really unique opportunity to use all of the tools they need to maximize the creative, artistic and production team. We have use of the beautiful facility in Camrose to test out projections or shadows, different aspects that could enhance their dance,” said Darka. “They have access to the Shumka wardrobes, sets and props. It is a full array of resources available to them. This is kind of a workshop process with the bells and whistles that Shumka can provide them. At this point the show will be a one-off in Camrose. This will be a test to see how it goes. What may hap-
pen is that out of the seven pieces that are created, some might be perfect fits for other projects we are working on,” shared Darka. “The other thing is we can decide after the process that this was so successful that we may do every two years. We are not sure yet because this is new to us. We will see what emerges from it,” she added. “We are so appreciative of our relationship with Nick and the entire team at the Lougheed Centre. They have been very supportive of us with our Nutcracker show as an example and now this. We are in the middle of a cross-Canada tour and it is expensive, especially with a cast of 50 dancers. To do something like artists emerge, we really needed that partnership and the Lougheed Centre came to the table with it. We are grateful that they
take our work seriously and support it,” Darka explained. “The closeness to Edmonton and the theatre is perfect. We like to sessional plan and it is a great way to see who assumes the leadership roles,” she added. About 30 to 40 people will be making their home in Camrose for the week prior to the final show. “We are excited to be in Camrose and work together. We are housed in the Jubilee Auditorium, We don’t like to downsize, so the Lougheed Centre is good. It has the largest stage outside of the Jubilee. It is a really good space for us. They have so many things are beneficial for us. It is important for us to test out various sizes of productions in Camrose.”
Lunch Special Monday to Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Shumka likes to travel in a triangle of Edmonton, Camrose and Victoria. “We can’t travel a lot because our dancers also have other jobs,” she added. “We have never done anything like this in our 60 years.” Some Camrose dancers have been in Shumka productions in the past. “All proceeds from this performance goes to the Canada Ukraine Foundation to assist refugees moving to Canada,” said Nick Beach, general manager of the Lougheed Centre. Shumka is emerging with an artist opportunity–an investment in new works and choreographers for succession and artistic development of the organization and local arts community.

Youth junior golf camp grows The Junior Junior Golfers of Camrose held two three-day camps at the Camrose Golf Course from July 11 to 13. Instructors Bill Penny and Pat Bohnet led the youngsters in learning how to golf. “The junior camp program is for young golfers aged five to nine. I brought this program to Camrose when I came here. I have been doing this ever since, except for the COVID-19 years,” explained Bill. “We get anywhere from 30 to 60 young golfers out for this three-day camp. It is about teaching the basic fundamentals of golf grip, stance, body positioning, posture and getting the concept of target. We are trying to get them to stay still and swing through to a target. The main thing is to have fun, while golfing,” added Bill. “We have three hours of fun everyday and the camp has gone over very well. Walk-a-Mile returns to streets By Lori Larsen
The Camrose Women’s Shelter Society (CWSS) is excited to once again be offering Camrose and area citizens, specifically men, an opportunity to “walka-mile” in high heeled red shoes as part of the international Walk A Mile In Her Shoes event to raise awareness on the longstanding effects of violence on women and children and of gender-based violence. If it is true that history repeats itself, then it is for sure the case with former Camrose area resident Ray Williams, who recently paid a visit to the Camrose and District Centennial Museum to see if an artifact he had donated 64 years earlier was still part of the museum collection. Ray’s story was originally featured in a news article 64 years ago, and with the past being repeated, is once again the topic of headlines.
was special, and in fact thought it might be an indigenous artifact. He decided to donate the rock to the Camrose Historical Society. “The museum wasn’t open until 1967 but it eventually found its way into our collection,” said City of Camrose Museum coordinator Jayda Calon. “He was quite excited that we had it and tracked it down for him.” The rock will continue to take up a special place at the museum along with
Submitted Ray Williams hangs onto the rock he donated to the Camrose Historical Society in 1985 which was then passed onto Camrose and District Centennial Museum.
Ray grew up on a farm approximately three and a half miles north east of Camrose and in 1958 found a rock on the family farm while helping his father Martin Mereck. Even at the young age of 10, Ray thought this rock
other precious items that have been donated, researched, catalogued and displayed or secured by museum staff and volunteers. “These donations are vital to our collection as they each hold such unique stories like this one,” com-
mented Calon. “These stories are what hold the museum institution together, as they write the past and path to our present day understanding and discovery.” The museum is a place where the community’s past and the rich history of this area is carefully and thoughtfully preserved for the benefit of visitors today and in the future. The Museum is filled with beautifully displayed artifacts and items that signify important moments in history but also the lives of everyday people from the past. “With these artifacts we can fill in parts of Camrose’s past and become familiar with the local people who once possessed these items,” continued Calon. “With these graciously donated items we can build narratives that make connections to one another and create different histories. In the case of Rays’ rock, this is just another example of coming full circle to create a new piece of history.” The staff and volunteers at the museum welcome donations, but ask that all donations be arranged through staff so items can be carefully examined and determined if the Camrose museum is the right fit. A visit to the museum is well worth the time spent and a great way to spend time with family or friends gazing through the invisible looking glass into the past. The museum is located at 4522-53 Sreet, Camrose and summer hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. For more information on the museum, visit the City of Camrose website at www.camrose.ca/en/ living-here/camrose-anddistrict-museum.aspx or telephone 780-672-3298.

Gochko enjoys the Longhorn truck box By Murray Green
Dale Gochko owns a 1972 GMC Longhorn truck. “I like the extra long eight and a half foot box. I put the truck back together the way it was after going through it. The colour is the same as GMC had when it came out of the factory,” said Dale. “I tried to keep it original, the way it was intended to be,” explained Dale. Chevrolet and GMC are trucks that share many similarities when it comes to the drivetrain and the overall appearance. “I put new wood in the box. It is now oak wood and I stained it to match the same colour as the paint, as close as we could get. The truck still has the original seat, tilt power steering and power brakes. That is about all of the options that were on it.” The C/K was Chevrolet and GMC’s full-size pickup truck line from October 1959 until 2000 in the United States and Canada. The C indicated two-wheel drive and K indicated fourwheel drive. “It was hard to find some of the parts. I had to dig deep in a lot of corners. There a lot of these trucks still on the road. The hard part is finding the hub caps for the three-quarter ton, because over the years people put different wheels

and rims on and the hub caps were crushed,” shared Dale. The trim levels were rearranged on GMCs, with the Custom now being the lowest level (the Deluxe being dropped) and the
FUN FACTS
The 1972 models were very similar to the 1971 models, with the only change being the rear view mirror was glued to the windshield rather than bolted to top of the cab, and metal or vinyl-covered flat door panels were no longer available; all trim level door panels were molded plastic with integral armrests and wood grain inserts on Cheyenne and Sierra trim levels. Internal differences include a new door panel design and the addition of a strengthening screw on the inside of the door below the vent window division bar. Chevrolet and GMC still have their fair share of differences. Two-wheel-drive, long-box trucks are the easiest examples to find these days as they were produced in the greatest quantities. Four-wheel-drive pickups are considerably rarer, especially short-wheelbase half-tons. In the case of the Blazer, four-wheel drives are the norm and two-wheel-drive Blazers, introduced in 1970, are unusual. For restoration, it should also be noted that the door and window cranks were slightly longer due to the molded plastic door panels, and the vent windows were now secured with a single screw on the inside of the door, thus differentiating it from the 1971 model year.
Sierra and Sierra Grande becoming separate trim levels at the top of the lineup rather than option packages as before. “The truck is about 98 percent stock. It has a 350 engine with a 700R transmission, so I can get some speed out of it. I found this vehicle out in Duffield. It was in a quonset with the original camper on it. I took off the camper as soon as I got it home because it wasn’t going to be used anymore,” added Dale. In 1971, the front brakes on all light-duty trucks were switched from drum brakes to disc brakes, resulting in much less brake fade under heavy use. That continued into 1972. “I’m a truck guy, just like trucks. I like the way they handle and I was raised on trucks. I’m not comfortable in a car, I have to drive trucks. I also drive truck for a living too,” said Dale. “I love this body style, the lines of this truck. This is the last year of this style
before going with the square body. I drive it everywhere I go. I wanted this truck to drive and I’ve been to Saskatoon and across Alberta with it. I enjoy going down the road with it and people waving because they appre-
ciate the old trucks. I go to car shows, and people want to talk about the Longhorn because there are not too many left.” He took a few leaf springs out to give it a smoother ride.

Keep everyone safe, don’t drive impaired By Lori Larsen
The warmer weather is finally making an appearance, which for many adults means an opportunity to enjoy an alcoholic beverage. Perhaps a beer after mowing the lawn, a cocktail on the deck with friends or a glass of wine enjoyed on a local restaurant or lounge outdoor patio, all of which pose enjoyable options even more so when done responsibly. Camrose Police Service (CPS) joins other law enforcement agencies around the province in creating awareness on the laws and extreme dangers of impaired driving as part of the Alberta Transportation July Alberta Traffic Safety initiative. “Even though the focus for the Traffic Safety initiative for July is impaired driving awareness, Camrose Police Service makes it a priority all year round,” said CPS Constable Matt Rolfe. “Our goal is to ensure all of our roadways are safe for all users. Educating the public and preventing operators of motor vehicles from driving when their ability to do so is impaired, by alcohol or drug, is a big part of that.” Immediate Roadside Sanctions (IRS) program
On December 1, 2020 the Province of Alberta implemented the IRS program. According to the Province of Alberta website, drivers who are suspected of being impaired by alcohol, drugs or a physical or medical condition that affects their ability to safely operate a vehicle, are subject to a 24-hour driver’s licence suspension. The Immediate Roadside Sanctions (IRS) Program under the Traffic Safety Act, applies to drivers when law enforcement has reasonable grounds to believe that: • within two hours after ceasing to operate a motor vehicle, the driver had a blood alcohol concentration that was equal to or exceeds 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. • within two hours after ceasing to operate a motor vehicle, the driver had a blood drug concentration that is equal to or exceeds any blood drug concentration for the drug that is prescribed by regulation under the Criminal Code (Canada). • within two hours after ceasing to operate a motor vehicle, the driver had a blood alcohol concentration and a blood drug concentration that is equal to or exceeds the blood alcohol concentration and the blood drug
concentration for the drug that is prescribed by regulation under the Criminal Code (Canada) for instances where alcohol and that drug are combined. • knowing a demand had been made, the driver failed or refused, without a reasonable excuse, to comply with a demand made under the Criminal Code (Canada). For complete details on the IRS program or all Alberta impaired driving laws visit the Alberta website at www.alberta.ca/impaired-driving-laws.aspx. According to madd. ca website every hour in Canada, an average of 10 federal criminal charges and provincial short-term licence suspensions are laid for alcohol or drug-impaired driving. “We have been experiencing an increase in impaired charges,” noted Rolfe which he said could very well be attributed to the IRS program. “The IRS program is enabling us to get impaired drivers off of our roadways and make them safer for everyone.” BAC limit
Under Alberta’s Traffic Safety Act, the Government of Alberta imposes administrative sanctions for drivers with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) between .05 per cent (50 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood) and .079 per cent (or 79 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood), which is below the legal threshold associated with the Criminal Code of Canada. The following are some of the typical affects BAC, at various levels, have on a person and their driving behaviour. If your BAC is 0.02 per cent you may experience: some loss of judgment; relaxation; slight body warmth and altered mood. “Some of the predictable effects this level of BAC may have on your driving include a decline in your visual functions (rapid tracking of a moving target) and a decline in your ability to perform two tasks at the same time,” explained Rolfe. If your BAC is 0.05 per cent you may typically experience: exaggerated behaviour; loss of smallmuscle control (for example, focusing your eyes); impaired judgment; usually good feeling; lowered alertness and a release of inhibition. Rolfe explained that at this level the predictable effects on driving may include: reduced coordination; reduced ability to track moving objects; diffi-

Purple martins increasing numbers Henault reported that the highest number of purple martin pairs was in 2009 with 173 pairs (346 total). “In 2022 we had 133 pairs for a total of 266 purple martins in the city. This is up from 124 pairs in 2021. Our increasing trend in numbers indicates how our landlords’ efforts are making a real change.” For anyone interested in becoming a purple martin landlord, Henault said there are city purple martin houses that still need landlords. “Being a landlord is a once a week commitment and you get rewarding experiences like watching the purple martin nestlings grow up and being an important part of conserving a species. Camrose Greenspace and Wildlife Stewardship (CGWS) coordinator, Rhyleigh Henault is happy to report the purple martin population was up this year over last year. As part of her summer position as the CGWS coordinator, Henault is responsible for purple martin conservation including tracking the birds on their annual summer trek to Camrose for breeding and nesting. “In 2003, the Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society (CWSS) named Purple Martins (Progne subis) as their flagship species,” explained Henault. “As part of the swallow family, these birds are aerial insectivores that are undergoing a sharp decline in population.” Henault further explained that purple martins nest exclusively in human-provided housing, so tending their nests can have a huge impact on their success. “It also gives people a chance to closely interact with these charismatic birds and increase interest in them around the city.” In an effort to ensure the success for continued incline of purple martins, the CWSS has put up 26 houses on public greenspace, with many more put up privately. The houses are maintained and cared for by purple martin landlords who receive training from CWSS with the assistance of the CGWS coordinator. Aside from helping with landlord training and maintaining the purple

There are workshops about caring for and attracting purple martins, and keynote speakers who specialize in bird research. There are even children’s events and activities.” For more information about this event, visit the Purple Martin Festival Facebook page or from May to August contact the Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society at wildlifestewardship@camrose.ca or 780-672-0544.

the purple martin house program is progressing for the conservation of this species. “In 2003 we started with eight pairs of purple martins (16 martins in total); over the years the population has increased and decreased due to many different uncontrollable factors.”
Presentation on Camrose water sources By Lori Larsen
In an effort to increase awareness on the importance of maintaining and conserving our water resources, the Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society and the City of Camrose presents a session on Thursday, July 21 conducted by Battle River Watershed Alliance about Camrose’s water sources. The event will take place at the Stoney Creek Centre ( 5320-39 Avenue) beginning at 7 p.m. The presentation will provide information on where Camrose’s water
comes from and where it goes, as well as the role everyone plays in conserving our most valuable commodity. Refreshments will be provided and there will be prize draws for a chance to win gift cards from local businesses at the CWSS events. For more information on the summer events offered from now until August 4, email wildlifestewardship@camrose.ca.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Beautiful craftsman home
I put my grandma on speed dial. I call that Instagram. Whenever I am with my family and someone says, “Wow, you have a beautiful family!” I reply, “Well, we left the ugly ones at home.” I would call my fashion style: “clothes that still fit.” If you eat an entire cake without cutting it, you technically only had one piece. I keep a nude painting of myself in my living room. Laugh if you want, but it sure keeps company from dropping by. If Johnny has 29 pieces of bacon and he eats 23 pieces, what does Johnny have? Happiness, Johnny has happiness! Not to brag, but every time I’ve played hard to get, I’ve won. My son made the mistake of telling me I was being overdramatic, so I just changed the WiFi password. We’ll see who’s overdramatic in about five minutes. 90% of grocery shopping is waiting for somebody to get out of your way. Dear Food Truck owners, ride down the block like the Ice Cream trucks do. When I was young, I used to hope I’d wake up beautiful. Now I just hope I wake up! I think we just need to accept that the ’90s was our peak as species. Roses are red. I’m going to bed.

Son: “Dad, I’ve got a part in the school play, I play a man who’s been married 25 years.” Dad: “Maybe next time you’ll get a speaking part.” If loud noises are your thing, you should stop by after I’ve had some bean dip. Sometimes I wish I could be the load of laundry in my dryer so I could sit in a dark, quiet space and everyone would ignore me for at least a week. I hate when people accuse me of lolly gagging, when I’m clearly dilly dallying. Pros of being an adult: I can eat 28 cookies and no one can stop me. Cons of being an adult: I ate 28 cookies. No one stopped me, and now I feel awful. Being a Mom means never buying the right amount of produce. Either everyone suddenly loves grapes and a week’s worth is eaten in one day, or fruit flies are congregating around the bananas. I asked my boss if I could leave early today and he said, “Only if you make up the time.” I said, “Okay, it’s 35 past 50.” Wish we could crossbreed the mosquitoes and the lightning bugs. At least then we could see them coming. Why are there never any good side effects? Just once, I’d like to read a medication bottle and see, “May cause extreme sexiness.” Dirt tired: a condition that occurs after spending all day in the garden. A Mexican magician says he will disappear on the count of three. He says, “uno, dos…” poof. He disappeared without a tres. I have a Polish friend who’s a sound technician. Oh, and a Czech one too. Czech one too. Czech one too.
