LYNTON AND LEAHEY LEAD NATIONALS SUNSHINE PARTY

Photo: Nathan Wong

The sun was shining for the Shannons Nationals’ fourth round at Queensland Raceway with spectators enjoying a weekend full of entertainment across five categories. The headline act for the weekend was the Jaccuzi Spas Australian Production Car Series and their annual Fight in the Night.

4

The X3 Series Queensland came right down to the wire as Brock Giblin returned to winning ways after a disappointing second round earlier in the year. Dominating the first race, the 2017 winner finished the next two with podiums. His runner-up placing in the final race enough to secure the outright round.

Beric Lynton and Tim Leahey were victorious in the spectacular event held under darkness, before sealing the round victory with their fourth place on Sunday.

"This win makes me feel like I am back, I want to be confident because if you’re not, you can’t drive and I think that is why I wanted to win the round, not just one race,” Giblin said.

“We both feel a bit flat that we finished fourth today, we wanted to finished higher but that is because we are competitive, but it’s awesome to have two consecutive rounds wins,” Lynton said.

In the National Sports Sedan Series, Steve Tamasi managed to win his first round for the year, despite facing mechanical problems and pressure from second placed Peter Crompton all weekend.

“We got the first place trophy and we got the majority points which is the main the thing,” Leahey added.

"It’s an amazing feeling to win the my first round in four years especially since we had seven mechanical issues like gear box and exhaust failures throughout the weekend,” Tamasi said.

“It has taken me more than 12 months to get this round win and it’s outstanding. I am over the moon, I am really happy.” - David Barram, Australian Prototype Series

It was a clean sweep in the Australian Prototype Series presented by Hot Wheels for David Barram, with the round winner starting off his weekend with pole and backing it up with three race wins.

“Our Saturday performance wasn’t too flash but we came out here today nice and strong, got a good start by getting in the lead and maintained it throughout the day.”

“It has taken me more than 12 months to get this round win and it’s outstanding. I am over the moon, I am really happy,” Barram said.

Highlights from Queensland Raceway will be televised on SBS with Production Cars on 12 August at 1pm, and Porsche GT3, Sports Sedan and Prototype Series to be screened on 26 August at 1pm on Speedweek.

"I would like to thank my crew, my wife, Garry my engine builder and all the people who helped me get here. Starting off the Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge weekend with fifth in the first race, Simon Fallon was able to recover for Sunday’s sessions and claim victory in the final two races.

The fifth round of the Shannons Nationals takes place on 2 – 3 September at Winton Motor Raceway in Victoria.

"I really didn’t think winning the round would be possible,” Fallon said.

TAS TURNS IT ON

AWESOME LAUNCESTON HOSTS SUCCESSFUL SUBARU RALLY TASMANIA Thousands of rally fans soaked up a thrilling fourth round of the 2018 CAMS Australian Rally Championship (ARC) at last weekend's Subaru Rally Tasmania. Tankformers' Eli Evans and Ben Searcy posted the fastest time on 14 of Subaru Rally Tasmania’s 17 special stages to seal a third straight win in the championship. Dramas on the first stage of heat two proved troublesome for Evans and Searcy and saw the win in doubt for a short time. The Tankformers crew were issued with an infringement notice from the Clerk of Course for receiving assistance on a special stage relegating them from first to third outright. Evans and Searcy exercised their right to a stewards hearing post the event, and with the infringement withdrawn, the pair were reinstated as winners. 6

In a super-tight battle, Subaru do Motorsport’s Molly Taylor and Malcolm Read claimed second with Innate Motorsport and Events’ Adrian Coppin and Toni Feaver in third. Both crews finished the round on equal points, however Taylor prevailed with a faster total event time. “It was getting a bit close with Adrian so we definitely pushed a bit more but we were trying to be a bit sensible too, we didn’t want to go and try and be a hero and make a mistake,” Taylor said. Coppin also enjoyed the battle with Taylor, and the event. “We got to the last stage and I think there was just on three seconds separating us so we had a little push and so did she. I think there was 0.2 of a second in it so it was awesome,” Coppin said.

“Having a rally here in the centre of Launceston has been awesome… they’ve been so welcoming, the crowd that turned out to the super special stage was amazing, I haven’t seen anything like that at an ARC for years. Despite having a two minute 10 second penalty added to their time for late check-in at a control, Steve Glenney and Andy Sarandis stormed through the stages to claim heat two by more than two minutes and finish fourth overall. “I think today we actually found the sweet spot with our new set up,” Glenney said.

Marcus and Scott Walkem enjoyed a successful return to national competition claiming fifth overall, while Lewis Bates and Dale Moscatt had a strong Sunday to pick up sixth. In ARC2 it was Tasmanians one and two, with Steve Glenney first and Mark Butcher second – Adam Kaplan was third in the Nissan 370Z. Kaplan and co-driver Aleshia Penney also took out the round in the ARC 2WD class. The CAMS ARC next travels to South Australia for the Adelaide Hills Rally on 21-23 September.

“The car worked well, we had some good times and we were able to keep up with the front runners so it was great.”

TARGA READY TO TAKE REEF ON

Anticipation continues to build for the Targa Great Barrier Reef, as more than 215 competitors will take part in the inaugural North Queensland event. It will be the first time in it’s history that the CAMS Australian Targa Championship heads to Queensland, the 18 stage event will be based in Cairns before heading through a number of key locations such as Gillies and Kuranda Ranges, Lake Morris Road and Lake Eacham. With such a busy route scheduled for the event, local residents will be able to admire $20 million dollars worth of exotic and classic cars during each day’s lunchbreak, which will be held in the towns of Atherton, Malanda and Ravenshoe. However the best chance for locals to experience the full Targa field will be the Targa Fest taking place on The Esplanade in Cairns on 1 September from 4pm until 9pm,

16

Acting as the third and penultimate round of the CAMS Australian Targa Championship, all eyes will be on Targa Tasmania champions Jason and John White in their 2016 Dodger Viper ACR Extreme after a brilliant Targa Tasmania win earlier on in the year. Australian Rally Legend Ross Dunkerton and veteran co-driver Alan Stean have also confirmed their entry with the duo behind the wheel of a 2006 Subaru WRX STI spec C. Some other familiar names attending the coastal event is GT Championship regulars Craig Dean and Tony Quinn, with the latter to team up with CAMS Australian Rally Championship co-driver Kate Catford. The inaugural Targa Great Barrier Reef, which will see more than 900 competitive kilometres tackled, takes place on Friday, 31 August to Sunday, 2 September.

ACCOUNTANT BY WEEK, OFFICIAL BY WEEKEND Melissa Johnson’s first event as a CAMS official was Rally Tasmania in Hobart 13 years ago working as small time official helping with results. More than a decade and many events later, Johnson has found herself working again on the event that has returned to her homeland, only this time she is a senior official delegating tasks. Having the rally back in Tasmania after a big break is significant for locals like Melissa with a lot of volunteers doing whatever they can to be part of the grand return.

Beginning her life by her dad’s side displaying the family’s XB V8 around Hobart, her love for cars never waned despite losing touch with the industry once she got older. The opportunity to properly get involved came in an unusual way when one of Johnson’s general mangers at her accounting firm invited her to volunteer after discussing his own love for the sport. “I went to volunteer my first event at the Rally Tasmania in Geeston with Ian Wheeler who was my boss,” Johnson added

“The fact the rally is back after 13 years is really important, which is why I have taken a week of annual leave from work,” Johnson said.

“You don’t always expect a chartered accountant to be involved heavily in motor sport but here we both are and just went from there.

“Having it in our own back yard inspires all the Tasmanian competitors to come up to that level and get involved with it.

“After Geeston, volunteering in Targa Tasmania and other Tasmanian events, I did some time in navigating before heading back to officiating where I met my now husband.”

“It’s an amazing experience to be an official for a National event in your hometown as well.” It’s been quite a journey for the 2017 Castrol Tasmanian Official of the Year who spends her day as a chartered accountant and her weekends in motor sport. 20

Meeting husband Troy Johnson was just one of the many lifelong relationships Johnson built in the industry, as well as more responsibility and ownership within officiating,

Photo: Scott Gelston

TV personality Grant Denyer, one that remains at the top of her list was the 2017 Tasmania Castrol Official of the Year award. “It was amazing to win because I went in thinking someone else will win,” Johnson said. “But then my name got read out and I was blown away. I didn’t have a speech prepared because I really was not expecting it at all. “I just like to help as much as I can, and for me just being involved is a highlight.” With all the time she spends in motor sport and her desire to help no matter the size of the event, it’s no wonder Melissa was awarded the prestigious accolade.

Daniel Prior has made a triumphant return to the 2018 Top End Drift Association Invitational State of Origin winning the popular Northern Territory event in early July. Prior lead the South Australian charge as fellow South Australians Jake Jones and Dale Campaign, who also was making his long awaited return to the event, rounded out the podium. With 22 competitors taking part in the State of Origin, Northern Territory drivers had the largest representation with 15, while six South Australians and one Queenslander were also on the list. Justin Gill was the highest ranked Territorian securing fourth overall, while fellow statesman Grant Frencham claimed the Big Entry competition posting an impressive time of 197km/h into turn one.

Some brilliant performances from B-Grade class driver Paul Seidel throughout the night earned the Northern Territory local the opportunity to compete in the A-grade class with a Wild Card entry and he did not disappoint. Seidel managed to knock out local top contender Patrick Barlee who finished second at last year’s event before going up against Gill in a entertaining battle that was eventually awarded the best on the night. It was a successful event for the Top End Drift Association as 300 spectators attended the event, and with the club looking to develop and expand the event into Asian markets, it continues to grow from strength to strength.

HALL TOO STRONG IN KYNETON OPENER

Photos: Shirley Caldwell

Brad Hall has convincingly won the first round of the Kyneton Car Club’s Autocross series claiming the fastest overall time of 3 minutes and 56 seconds.

Kilpatrick’s time of four minutes looked to have sealed second spot before Houston’s final run of the day saw him finish just 0.13 of a second ahead of Kilpatrick.

Stephanie Houston was the fastest female of the day claiming 16th outright as well as winning her own class, while Clare Franzo finished 27th outright.

The Subaru WRX driver dominated the 33-competitor field winning all but one of the eight runs, with fellow WRX pilot Andrew Kilpatrick the only other driver to win a run.

Andrew and Tom Every finished fourth and sixth respectively, while Alan Airey split the brothers to finish fifth outright and win his class, the biggest of the event with seven competitors.

The next round of the Kyneton Car Club Autocross series will take place on Saturday 19 August and will also act as the sixth round for the Vic Club Autocross Series.

With Hall unstoppable, the battle for second place was the most entertaining with Kilpatrick losing out to Subaru RS Liberty driver Marcus Houston in dramatic fashion.

The CanAm Maverick X3 driver looked more like a veteran of SXS as he settled in straight away, setting the quickest lap of the weekend and progressing through the heats and semi finals with ease. I wanted to put some pressure on and I am pumped to come away with the win.” Despite losing out to Price, Simon Evans managed to secure second place with his Polaris RZR Turbo and build a buffer at the top of the overall championship standings, while Nihori edged out Henry to round out the podium. FEMALE OFFICIALS EXCHANGE PROGRAM LAUNCHES FOR A THIRD SEASON

Women of Australian Motor Sport

a CAMS initiative

The Virgin Australia Supercars Championship (VASC), Women of Australian Motor Sport (WAMS) and Women in Motor Sport New Zealand (WiMNZ) have once again joined forces to launch a third year of the successful VASC Trans-Tasman Female Officials Exchange program. The Trans-Tasman program is an extension of the highly successful WAMS Officials Exchange Program which is now in its sixth year of sending female officials to work between signature Australian motor sport events and the Singapore Grand Prix. Capitalising on the strong relationship between Australian and New Zealand motor sport communities, the VASC Trans-Tasman Female Officials Exchange Program will again recognise the valued contribution made by many women in officiating, and is committed to supporting and promoting the inclusion and development of female officials between the two countries. This year’s program is open to an expanded group of female officials, and will provide an opportunity for an Australian official to work at the 2018 ITM Auckland SuperSprint in November, along with a New Zealand official to work at the 2018 Vodafone Gold Coast 600 in October. In 2017, Rebecca Armstrong from Victoria was the second Australian recipient of the program to travel to NZ to officiate. “I met some of the most amazing people and it was an experience that I am proud to have received," Armstrong said. "I am certainly one of the luckiest women around and hope that I can inspire or encourage others to try and

chase the opportunity. It will certainly be one that I will keep with me and look back on fondly for the rest of my life.” Across the Tasman, New Zealand resident Shelley McSaveney was awarded the chance to work as an official at the iconic Bathurst 1000 in 2017. McSaveney was so inspired by the exchange, she has since travelled to be an official at the Adelaide 500 and Crownbet Darwin Triple Crown and will be officiating at the Coates Hire Ipswich SuperSprint in 2018. “WAMS is grateful to the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship for their ongoing support of the Trans-Tasman Officials Exchange, and we’re looking forward to working with our New Zealand counterparts to continue this wonderful program,” Dr Karyn Lun, Vice-chair of the WAMS Committee and WAMS Officials Working Group representative said. “We are particularly excited to expand the selection criteria in 2018 to include all general officials, and give more deserving ladies the opportunity to apply.”

For Australian officials, the selection criteria is as follows: • be a CAMS accredited official and Australian resident • be 18 years of age or older • be available to travel to New Zealand from 1-5 November 2018 • hold a current passport with at least 6 months’ validity from November 2018 • provide details of your recent state, national and International level officiating experience • provide contact details of two Senior CAMS officials who support your application and can be contacted for references • tell us in 300 words what makes you a good representative for WAMS, CAMS and Australia at the 2018 ITM Auckland SuperSprint and how you will use this experience in your future motor sport officiating endeavours

With matters regarding event management, conduct, safety and welfare managed by the council, the Panel is actively involved in setting the State Officials Training Calendar.

Multiple CAMS Service Awards and CAMS Service Star Awards recipients are part of the council, which is appointed on a merits/needs basis ensuring that each officiating and sporting discipline has representation.

The 2018 QSOP consists of the following members (all appointed positions):

NSW CLUBS TO BENEFIT FROM LIFE SAVING TECHNOLOGY 40

• Andrew Hickson - Off Road • Bradley Tubb (Chair) - Stewards

• David Evans - Speed Events • Dave Wood (State Training Coordinator) - Scrutiny • Errol Bailey - Rally • John Courtenay - Fire & Rescue • Mary Caplet - Auto Test • Paul Overell (Deputy Chair) - Circuit (Event Command) • Susie Brook - Circuit (Communications)

CAMS is encouraging all NSW car clubs to apply for the latest round of grants for defibrillators for their clubs.

In determining priority for allocation of defibrillator package, the Office of Sport will consider:

More than 7000 people will experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the NSW community this year alone. Early CPR and access to a defibrillator are the most important determinants of survival of these individuals.

• Profile of participants and spectators of club and facility i.e. type and size, calendar of events, season dates, game schedule etc.

The NSW government has now opened the second round of the Local Sport Defibrillator program. This program aims to improve access to defibrillators to the community, especially in and around sporting precincts and events. Applications are open until 14 September 2018 and grants will be based on a number of factors.

To apply for the grant and to find out more information, simply click here.

• Facilities that provide the highest community access to the AED, including where the device will be installed, how it will be secured, strategies to maximise community awareness around AED availability and ease of use outside your clubs normal hours of operation. • Meet a demonstrated need in the community club or participants, stats of known medical conditions or previous incidents etc. • Address barriers faced by the club to access emergency services and clubs without an existing AED. • Capacity of organisation to apply systems and processes to successfully undertake the ongoing use, management and maintenance of AED.

LEGEND LOWNDES CALLS TIME

Supercars legend Craig Lowndes has announced he will retire from full time racing at the end of the 2018 Virgin Australia Supercars season. Despite Lowndes’ current contract with Triple Eight Race Engineering expiring in 2019, a mutual decision was made between him and his Triple Eight Managing Director Roland Dane for Lowndes to retire ahead of time. The veteran’s rise in form during the 2018 Supercars season silenced any temporary doubt on his future, but a change of heart to retire on a high lead him to the surprising decision. “I’ve always said there are two key factors keeping me racing and those are my motivation to keep getting up and doing what I love and my competitiveness, and for me, nothing has changed,” Lowndes said.

“I feel extremely lucky to have been able to keep doing what I love at a competitive level for such a long time. “I have to thank my family and friends, the whole team at Triple Eight and KRE, Supercars, my personal and team sponsors and of course the fans for supporting me throughout.” Lowndes leaves the sport with a strong legacy as a driver, with 652 race starts in Supercars, 106 victories, six Bathurst crowns, three Championships and five Sandown 500 wins, all part of an impressive 21-season record. While he will retire from full-time racing, the 43-year-old will still remain with Triple Eight Race Engineering in an ambassador capacity as well as codriver for endurance events.

“But at the same time I want to make sure I finish my last full-time season with some strong results.

CAMS HISTORY

CRAIG LOWNDES Three-time Supercars champion and six times Bathurst 1000 winner, Craig Lowndes became the natural successor to Peter Brock – fitting because Brock was his idol.

Craig equalled Brock’s record of 212 starts in the Australian Touring Car/v8 Supercars Championship, and topped Mark Skaife’s record of 90 round wins. Lowndes started his car racing in Formula Ford after racing in karts from the age of nine. His father Frank was a long-term engineer for Brock as well as a dedicated and respected senior CAMS official. The Van Diemen Rf85 Formula Ford Frank Lowndes bought for Craig to start his circuit racing was six years past its prime, but Craig and his father massaged the little car to the point where Craig was able to head fields. Soon, he caught the attention of the Holden Racing Team and he was co-driving with Brad Jones in the 1994 Sandown 500 where they beat Peter Brock and Thomas Mezara, with Lowndes replacing Mezara in the HDT the following year. The team’s faith in him was justified when Craig won the Australian Touring car Championship, the Sandown Tickford 500 and Bathust AMP 1000. Craig was the youngest winner of the Bathurst Enduro.

Craig took his place with HRT partnered by Skaife for the 1998 ATCC, which Craig won, despite a spectacular rollover at Calder. In 2000 Lowndes created national controversy when he switched from Holden to Ford. Initially it was not successful move, but in 2004, he signed with the Brisbane –based Better Electrical outfit, which was the genesis of the Roland Dane-led Triple Eight Race engineering and soon help mould the team into a consistent winning force. In the 2006 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, Craig shared the winning Falcon BA with rising star Jamie Whincup.

Team 888 left Ford and signed a three-year deal with Holden. A one-two finished for Whincup and Lowndes in the first race of the championship that year was matched by similar dominance later that year when Lowndes took the win. In 2012, Craig would take the opening race of the Clipsal 500 in the streets of Adelaide by a record margin of 20.5 seconds and then go onto to eclipse Skaife’s 90-race win total at Perth 350. Craig has been awarded the Barry Sheene Medal three times, while receiving the Peter Brock Medal and Order of Australia Medal in 2012.
