CAMS has paid tribute to all officials that have volunteered their time this year, as part of the recent FIA Volunteers Weekend celebrations. This weekend was created to highlight and thank the unsung heroes of motor sport around the world and CAMS CEO Eugene Arocca expressed his gratitude towards those in Australia who willingly gave up their time. “The FIA Volunteers Weekend is an opportunity to shine a light on all the officials who contribute to our sport and give up so much of their time to ensure

UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS MOTIVATION FOR CHIEF STEWARD With more than thirty years’ experience and memories at almost every circuit in Australia, there are few officials that would have more stories to tell than Glenn Pincott. In 2017, Pincott was awarded with the Castrol State Motor Sport Official of the Year for New South Wales award, an honour he will never forget. “At first I was stunned, I could not believe that in my 30 years of officiating, I actually won something,” Pincott said. “The thanks from my peers is what motivates me most, not so much obtaining these awards. “With this said, I do appreciate the recognition and I will remember winning this award for the rest of my officiating years.” The 61-year-old began his career in the mid-1980s when a good friend, the Chief Scrutineer at Bathurst and Amaroo, invited him to get involved with motor sport. Pincott took up the invitation and officiated his first event at the second ever 12 hour race meeting at Bathurst, before building his repertoire and eventually landing the role of Technical Commissioner for Production Cars in Australia. 6

Photo: Dave Oliver

“Four years later, I was approached by the panel to take over and I gladly accepted without any hesitation.” The Chief Steward has never looked back after accepting the role and as with most aspects of life, it is the people that he deals with that have the biggest impact on him in his current role.

“Having dedicated officials is the most important factor in producing all the successful events we put on.” The role, which allowed him to attend nearly every circuit in Australia, paved the way for him to become an event assessor and Chief Scrutineer at Supercars events around the country. “My career change to Chief Scrutineer, after many years of service, allowed me to develop an understanding of the rules and how to prosecute competitors,” Pincott added. “During this period, several stewards told me that I would make a good steward with my management and technical background, so I succumbed and joined the stewards’ ranks.

“The biggest difficulties are always the personalities, however the joy is the overcoming of the challenges when they arise,” Pincott said. “Despite this, having dedicated officials is the most important factor in producing all the successful events we put on. “I would hate to think what it would be like without them.” It’s an attitude like this that makes all the officials, including those under Pincott, the key reason that passion will never cease to exist in motor sport. Pincott is a pure example of how getting involved in something you love, working hard in it and reaping the rewards creates unforgettable moments.

PRESSURE OFF FOR VOLUNTEER STARTER Officials keep motor sport ticking, but arguably none are more nerve-wracking than the role of Flag Starter. While some may not be able to handle the pressures that come with the job, Winton Supercars Flag Starter Matt Cornford thrives on the pressure, especially when the cameras are on.

NO REGRETS FOR 67 YEAR OFFICIAL

Cornford started officiating through the Victorian Flag Marshallaing Team (VFT) five years ago, working his way through the flagging ranks, eventually being offered the role of Sector Marshal at Sandown and Flag Starter at Winton. “When I first started, I felt really nervous just to make sure everything was done the way it supposed to be,” Cornford said.

When a young Colin Marston went to his first ever race at Fisherman’s Bend in 1952, motor sport was very different to what we know today.

“However, once I did do the first one, the pressure was off and then I just enjoyed it from there."

Colin moved his way up the ranks through his passion for cars, smart thinking and hard work, despite working during the week and competing on Saturdays.

While Conford has worked hard to get to the position of where he’s at now, his story of getting into the industry is simple.

Starting off as a scrutineer, Colin joined an off road panel, which he accepted due to the opportunity to travel around Australia, before being offered a newly created position, Eligibility Officer, where his hard work was rewarded with, the CAMS Service award.

“It was a just a matter of me looking for something to do in my forties with the kids getting a bit older,” Cornford added. “Since that first test day at Sandown, I have never looked back.”

Now, 67 years later and the longest serving scrutineer in Australia, Colin can sit back and reminisce about the impact he has made to his beloved sport. “In my time as a scrutineer or my time of being involved in this sport, I have had many wonderful memories,” Colin said. “I greatly appreciate whoever it was that offered me the opportunity to be a scrutineer for CAMS.” CAMS is extremely fortunate and forever grateful to have been able to rely on the passionate and loyal service of people like Colin.

RICCIARDO’S RACERS GRADUATE EXCELS IN RACING DEBUT Former Ricciardo’s Racers graduate Callum Potter has made his race meeting debut taking part in the Hyundai Excels category at the second round of the CAMS Victorian State Circuit Racing Championships.

“The jump from karting to cars is a massive step and running programs like Riccardo Racers at Sandown with such quality instructors to show them the proper driving techniques is so good.

The 14-year-old, who finished 27th overall in a 53 car field, showed promise all weekend finishing 28th and 26th in the first two races before saving his best result until last claiming 25th spot in the final race.

“The braking limit exercise especially Callum did years ago made an instant impact on his driving technique and he continues to push the late braking limits today.”

Callum’s father, Euan Potter was ecstatic with the result, crediting Ricciardo’s Racers as a major contributor to his son’s performance. “What really helped Callum was the Riccardo Racers junior programs he did from beginner to advanced classes,” Euan said.

DEFIANT RICCIARDO MASTERS MONACO CAMS ambassador Daniel Ricciardo has had his best month in the 2018 Formula 1 season with the highlight being the Monaco Grand Prix during the end of the month. The Australian was in fine form on the Monte Carlo streets setting multiple lap records in qualifying and practice, and lead the race from start to finish despite battling engine issues. Ricciardo classified the win the most satisfying of his career. “Give it two days, probably and I look back on the weekend as a whole, I think it was definitely my best weekend and the most satisfying,” he said.

12

Earlier in May, the 28-yearold was unable to find his groove to battle hard at the Barcelona Grand Prix, finishing fifth after qualifying six and setting the fastest lap of the race. With the Formula 1’s next round in Canada on 11 June, Ricciardo sits in third position on the Drivers Championship on 72 points, trailing just Lewis Hamilton (110) and SebastianVettel (96).

RENTSCH TAKES OUT THRILLING

ST GEORGE 399 Eight-time Australian Off Road Champions Shannon and Ian Rentsch have pulled off a comefrom-behind win at round one of the BFGoodrich CAMS Australian Off Road Championship (AORC) in St George, Queensland.

A tight battle between Rentsch and young gun Toby Whateley on the final day ensured that spectators at the event were set for a nail biting finish, with the veteran eventually crossing the finish line first three minutes ahead of Whatley. While Rentsch and his pro buggy managed to pull off a sensational finish at his St George debut, it was Whatley and his Loveday 4×4 Park Can-Am Maverick that won the hearts of the field. A brilliant first day from Whateley saw the South Australian grab an outright lead by one minute with the tight, twisty St George course favouring the SXS Turbos - seven of the top ten outright positions were claimed by this class. 14

“Second place to an eight-time champion is not a bad thing I suppose.” Whilst Rentsch finished the day in fourth, as he was allocated time back after stopping to help Anthony Jones and Trent Challenger when their Peugeot 207 Extreme 4WD caught fire, alongside Josh Howells and Tait Svenson. Rentsch the started the next day on a mission overtaking Whateley on the first lap wasted no time reeling back the gap, and when he eventually did cross the finish line in first position with a lead of just seconds, all eyes were on the youngster. Unfortunately for Whatley, a reserve fuel pump issue prevented him getting the pace he required to catch Rentsch, limping to the finish line to finish a well-earned second place.

“One of our pumps gave way and we had a bit of a flat tyre, it wasn’t completely flat so that’s a good thing I suppose,” Whatley said. “I was shaking, nervous the whole way around knowing that Shannon was coming and then when I got that flat tyre knowing that we had to make time it was gut wrenching.” “But we got second place and second place to an eight-time champion is not a bad thing I suppose.” For the winner, who now sits on top of the standings, while the victory was difficult, it was definitely entertaining to be part of. “It was a testing weekend, the conditions were pretty tough in the dust and a pretty challenging weekend. But it’s a good start to the championship for us,” Rentsch said. “We got off to a pretty bad start yesterday in some dust with some lapped cars and lost a lot of time.

“Today we made up a bit of time in the first section and in the last section we caught up to Toby and got by him and we had a few clean laps. I really enjoyed the last three.” A consistent drive from Lovett and Guenthen saw them finishing third outright replacing Carr and Wynsham who tragically broke a tailshaft only five kilometres into the second day. Neville Taylor and Ryan Taylor were behind the wheel of the only other Pro-Buggy in the top 10, with the Tatum AK47 finishing fourth overall. Another Can-Am pilot in Luke Shadbolt and co-driver Allen Henson rounded out the top five after starting the day outside the 10 in what was an impressive showing by the SXS Turbo class claiming seven of the top ten outright positions. Carr wasn’t the only one to retire on day two with Chris Mingay tearing the front suspension after colliding with a tree, Matt Hanson succumbing to drive line issues, despite a strong

start which saw him in fourth at one point and John Howells breaking a steering rack off the start line. The retirements followed the heartbreak suffered on day one that saw 2017 champion Matt Martin, Cameron Sherwood fail to finish. Geoff Pickering and Dylan Watson added yet another trophy to the cabinet with a superb win in Production 4WD, while St George debutants Lukas Yates Jim Bardsley took out Extreme 4wd honours. Last year’s Pro Lite champions Chris Browning and Chris Clarke finished ninth overall, also taking out the class after leader Alan Dixon had a rollover at the renewed Baker’s Dozen.

THE WHO’S WHO OF OFF ROAD AT

F I N K E The 2018 Tatts Finke Desert Race will see 135 car crews take on the famous red dust and 'whoops' in the iconic out-and-back race from Alice Springs to Finke on 8-11 June. Competing in round two of the BFGoodrich CAMS Australian Off Road Championship (AORC), the cars will join 632 bike riders, all hoping to conquer the 452 kilometres of racing over two days. Last year’s Tatts Finke Desert race winners SR Racing’s Shannon and Ian Rentsch will be front and centre to defend their ‘King of the Desert’ title. Fresh off a win at the St George 399, the eight-time Australian Champion will be out to grab the AORC lead from Loveday 4x4 Park’s Toby Whateley, with just two points in it. Whateley, who made history at round one of the BFGoodrich CAMS AORC by becoming the first to take an outright section win in a SXS Turbo, will be part of a huge SXS Turbo field – 44 Polaris’ and Can-Ams will take on the Finke Desert, with another 18

of the 1200cc SXS Sports making the journey. The car field is littered with a who’s who of Australian off road with Hayden Bentley, Greg Gartner, David Fellows and Mark Burrows just to name a few. 2016 Australian Off Road Champion Jack Rhodes will be hoping to improve on last year’s podium third place finish as will last year’s runnerup Beau Robinson, again in the Geiser Bros Trophy Truck.

The 2017 Prolite Class Champion, Chris Browning took out last round, followed closely by Alan Dixon and Ally Howells – Tait Svenson was on the money early only to experience mechanical issues late in the final section.

The Tatts Finke Desert Race will take on the first 226 kilometre leg from Alice Spring to Finke on the Sunday morning, with leg two, returning to Alice Springs, kicking off on Monday morning.

Five-time bike 'King of the Desert' Toby Price will attempt the ‘Iron Man’ Finke Double at the 2018 Tatts Finke Desert Race aiming to make history by winning both car and motorcycle categories. The Prolite class will be one to watch following a tight contest at the St George 399. 2017 Australian Off Road Champion Matt Martin will be out to grab points after a horror start to his title defence retiring in section one at St George.

THE PRICE IS RIGHT FOR DUAL CAMPAIGN Toby Price is preparing for one of his biggest challenges - taking on the Tatts Finke Desert Race in both car and motorcycle. It won’t be the first time Price has attempted the difficult feat. Back in 2016, Price won the motorcycle category, but was runner-up in his first attempt in the car category. “Since I attempted the double in 2016 and we didn’t claim the win in the truck category, I’ve been extremely keen to try again and was gutted when I was injured last year and couldn’t do the bike,” Price said. “We’ve had a couple of months to prepare the truck and the bike and I’m feeling good.” In order to conquer Finke on both two-wheels and four, Price will first run in Extreme 2WD on the first day of the event from Alice Springs to Finke. He'll then fly back to the start line in time for the

Price has been preparing his Red Bull Trophy Truck out of Tekno Performance’s state of the art headquarters in Yatala, Queensland for the past several months. “I can’t wait to get out and do our first test with the truck, this is going to be extremely challenging but rewarding if we can get it done.”

PHILLIP ISLAND PERFECT FOR SHANNONS THIRD ROUND

28

As the third edition of the Shannons Nationals in 2018 fast approaches, a visit to Phillip Island promises plenty of excitement. The Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge Australia will be celebrating its 10th anniversary as leader Cooper Murray headlines the 23 strong field hoping to replicate his efforts at Sandown in May. The Radical Australia Cup will hold its fourth round for the season as part of the Nationals and Kim Burke currently leads the tournament with two round wins so far. With one race on both Saturday and Sunday, Chris Medland, Sue Hughes and Peter Clare will all be returning to the field after missing last round. The CAMS PAYCE Australian Formula 4 Championship will also be making its first appearance on the 2018 Shannons Nationals calendar with 11 entrants taking part in the event.

Cameron Shields leads the competition after a solid first round win at Symmons Plains ahead of Ryan Suhle and teammate Aaron Love. The final race of the weekend will be the CAMS Australian GT Championship with the famous Victorian circuit hosting the second endurance round for the year. The CAMS Australian GT Trophy Series will have three races across the weekend while 45 entrants will tackle the final race of the weekend, the CAMS Australian GT Endurance championship. The Shannons Nationals at Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit will take place on 1 -3 June, with live coverage of Sunday’s session available on thenationals.com.au. Tickets are available for purchase at the gate. CA M S S P EED READ

DRAMATIC NATIONALS

PROVIDES SECOND ROUND ENTERTAINMENT

Photo: Dan Thompson

The second round of the Shannons Nationals has come to a close with Sandown Raceway playing host to five categories featuring a host of last lap deciders, heartbreaking retirements and fairy-tale finishes. Spirits were dampened on the Friday after bleak weather caused chaos all day, but improvements on Saturday and sunshine on Sunday saw drivers put on a show for all those who attended. The Porsche GT3 Michelin Cup provided the weekend’s most dramatic narrative as Cooper Murray bounced back from a disappointing 12th in the first race to put on two sensational drives in the second and third race to win the round outright and move to the top of the overall standings.

30

“Winning feels a lot different and feelings can’t describe it,” Murray said, “After race one, I didn’t think I would be able to come away with the round win, my focus was just to fight my way back through the field. “I had a bit of doubt, especially after race one, but my objective after race one was just to get points for the championship and hopefully get on the podium for the round. “I would like to thank all my team, without them I wouldn’t be able to achieve this success.” Another nail-biting finish took place in the CAMS Australian GT Championship as 2017 Champion Geoff Emery turned in two race victories to overcome a stubborn Fraser Ross and win his first round of the season.

“We have been have solid all weekend so it’s really good to get that pressure off our back with the win,” Emery said. “There was a lot of pressure throughout the weekend, Fraser had some green tyres on his car and he was making some really good ground, but my car was just solid all the way through. “The car is quick and I am really looking forward to Phillip Island.” The weekend’s action continued in the Radical Australia Cup, as overall leader Kim Burke continued his brilliant start in the season, edging out Simon Haggarty by just two points after the pair traded wins Burke’s second place in the second race, handing him the overall win.

“I had a really fun weekend and it was just awesome. It feels really good,” Burke said. “Everyone drove really well. Times were really close and competitive. “I had lots of doubt to be honest. I was a bit nervous going into the weekend but after Sunday’s race, it was all fine in the end. “We will probably have a look at the car ahead of Phillip Island and see if we can make the car a little bit better otherwise there isn’t much I can do except for turn up and take as many points as I can.” A clean sweep in the Australian Prototype Series (APS) presented by Hot Wheels by Jason Makris saw him fight off all challenges from teammate John Paul Drake early in the second race to secure the CA M S .COM.AU

outright round victory and remove the top of the APS Standings. “It was great to get the victory today to seal the round. The track conditions were far better than Saturday’s twist when dry became wet and the whole group on slicks,” Makris said. “Drake brought on a great fight and eventually overtook me on lap five. I was determined to get back the lead and applied enough pressure for him to make a mistake and when he did, I eventually held enough pace for the remainder of the race to get the win. “Sunday’s longer race was a great opportunity to uitlise the Italian made Enduro CN for the first time and it was a great machine.”

The final race of the weekend saw a solo Beric Lynton claim the victory in the four-race opening round of the Australian Production Car Series, backing up his three previous wins across the weekend. “To come to Sandown and get four wins for four starts and is a great start for the boys that have built the car.,” Lynton said. “I think four wins and the other guys having a few dramas gives a little bit of a points lead but every weekend is tough. “I didn’t invite Tim Leahey (co-driver) because I wanted to be selfish and drive the car alone this weekend.”

HENRY ON SONG IN SECOND SXS SHOWDOWN Stephen Henry has overcome difficult conditions to claim the second round of the 2018 DEWALT SXS Australian Championship in Ballarat. In his first outright win in the championship to date, Henry could do no wrong during the SXS Grand Final as his CanAm Maverick X3 completed the holeshot and the joker lane perfectly to secure the win. It was a breakout result for Henry, who is gradually gaining confidence after a solid start to the season. “After our third in Adelaide and first in Ballarat, the season is going really good so far,” Henry said. “It feels pretty good to get the monkey off the back to gain confidence is a good thing. CA M S .COM.AU

“We’re looking forward to the next events. We will keep things just like they are and if we can get good starts then we can run into a good pace, we should be good.” Behind the wheel of the #51 CMS Racing CanAm, Brett Comiskey continued his good SXS form to claim silver in the Grand Final, while round one winner Simon Evans rounded out the podium in third. Making up for a poor first round, Tim Liston dominated the SXS Sport class with a clean sweep of all heat rounds, before progressing through the final to claim the class win and fourth overall. Young Veterans’ Stephen Gregory finished in second place for the class,

while Tom Evans locked in third place, despite a spectacular role in the final. Evan’s Polaris RZR teammate Cody Crocker took out the honours for the fastest lap of the weekend with a time 1:41.484, before tragically retiring in the final due to a broken tie rod thanks to contact with another SXS. The DEWALT SXS Australian Championship continues at the popular Albury-Wodonga Motorcross Club in Albury for round three on 21 July.

Q&A WITH JACQUELINE DEVEREAUX After recently heading to Singapore as part of an officials exchange, Jacqueline Devereaux discussed her invaluable learning experiences throughout her time there. Speed Read: What did you think about the WAMS Officials Exchange Program with Singapore? Jacqueline Devereaux: I would recommend the program to anyone wishing to broaden their overall skills and knowledge as an official. This program gives you the opportunity to move between disciplines, see what other roles are about and how they all contribute to bringing the event together. The program is also great for anyone travelling or officiating overseas for the first time as you are really well looked after. You have the opportunity to meet so many great people and so many officials who are willing to share their knowledge. SR: What was the best take away from the exchange?

become well rounded in my roles as an official, which has allowed me to return to Australia and seek out new experiences and continue to develop my skills. SR: Would you like to add anything else? JD: Since my Singapore exchange, I have been granted numerous opportunities, which include senior roles such as Sector Marshal and Safety Car Communicator. I completed the Silver License training course and have since become a qualified Event Assessor. In this role alongside other officials, we have developed our assessment methodology to conduct numerous Bronze event assessments. I have developed a network and travel to lots of events across Australia. Last year I tried something new and went to Darwin for the first time to be an official at the CrownBet Triple Crown Supercars and this year I'm going to the USA F1 Grand Prix.

DOMINANT MONASH PREPARE FOR WORLD STAGE After taking the 2017 Formula SAE Australasia series by storm, the Monash Motorsport team will travel to Austria, England and Germany to take part in the European Formula SAE/Formula Student series. The worldwide initiative allows university students to build a race car from scratch, starting from the design of the car all the way through to the manufacturing process to bring the car to life. “The Formula SAE program’s purpose was to allow engineers to get out of the classroom and to get out of the computer lab and actually 3 6

learn how things work and how to put things together,” Monash Motorsport Academic advisor Dr Scott Worldey said. Despite the program being originally tailored for engineers, it has since expanded to include students from science, law, commerce and business backgrounds and student appointed Vincent Chu heads all of this as CEO. “Our team’s probably one of the larger ones in the world. We’ve got just over 100 students involved from 8 faculties across the 10 university campuses,” Chu explained.

While Monash Motorsport will go to Europe in 2018 with the two cars, an autonomous driverless vehicle deigned to drive around the track and perceive the CA M S .COM.AU

CAMS HISTORY

SIR JACK BRABHAM Knighthood is a far cry from a small mechanic workshop in the suburbs of Sydney, but Sir Jack Brabham is no run-of-the-mill engineer.

He is the only man to have won the World Championship in for Drivers in a car of his own and the only Australian racing driver to have received a knighthood. Christened John Arthur, Jack was born on 2 April 1926 in Hurstville, Sydney. He became an RAAF flight mechanic at 18 then left the service in 1946 with the rank of Leading Aircraftsman to open a garage and machine shop in Penshurst, Sydney. Jack began his motor sport career driving a Speedway Midget in 1948. It was here where he developed the famous ‘Brabham crouch’ which so amused the English motor racing press. Jack unsettled the establishment by winning the Australian Hillclimb Championship in 1951 at Rob Roy. He met Ron Tauranac, a hill climb competitor, and began a friendship that would become one of the most effective partnerships in motor racing. Determined to try his luck in Europe, Jack joined the Cooper Car Company where he won the Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championships in 1959 and 1960.

This was the first world title to a rearengined car. Jack however, saw opportunities for himself. He and Ron Tauranac established a company to build customer cars to Ron’s designs. In 1966, Jack took his third World Drivers’ Championship in his Barbham BT3, as well as his first Manufactures’ crown as the owner of the company bearing his name, an achievement unique to this day. In 1967, New Zealander Dennis Hulme joined the team, winning the Drivers’ Championship and netting Brabhams their second constructors’ tittle. Jack reluctantly retired at age 44, largely due to family pressures, after the 1970 Formula 1 season when he finished fifth in the World Drivers’ Championship.

As well as his knighthood, bestowed by the Queen in 1978, Sir Jack was awarded the OBE in 1966, voted Australian of the Year in 1966, CAMS Membership honour in 1971 , Australian Sports Medal in 2000, Centenary Medal in 2001, Officer in the Order of Australia (AO, 2008) and was named as National Living Treasure in 2012. He was inducted into the all of fame of Sport Australia, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and International Motor sports. CAMS instituted the Sir Jack Brabham Award in 2006 in recognition of his remarkable achievements. The above edited excerpt was taken from the popular CAMS History Book.
