John Lanyon started as a competitor. He holds the dubious distinction of having raced in just one AGP and one Armstrong 500 – and failed to finish either. In 1962, John had become president of PIARC, just as the circuit closed – its surface pummelled to pieces by the third Armstrong 500 and the club didn’t have the funds to fix it, nor could heavy road-paving machinery reach the site. It took three years of unsuccessful and sometimes politically bitter negotiation, but in 1982 PIARC walked away from Phillip Island and John resigned as president after 21 years. Both PIARC and Phillip Island survived the second closure. With substantial private investment, it re-opened in 1989 to host the World Motorcycle Grand Prix and in 1991 PIARC came back to assist the new circuit owners to run race cars.

Coffs Coast Rally Team’s Nathan Quinn remains in striking distance in the championship hunt, sitting in third only 46 points off the lead. Bates will debut his new but untested Toyota Yaris AP4 in SA and all eyes will be watching to see if he can keep his championship lead. The CAMS ARC has had it all in 2017 — the three-way fight between Bates, Quinn and Eli Evans at the Eureka Rally in Victoria and the see-sawing battle between Bates and Taylor at the Forest Rally in Western Australia as the pair traded stage wins in heat one has had everyone on the edge of their seats. Mechanical failures unfortunately played a part, with Bates and McCarthy forced to limp to the finish in
in heat two has all but cost them a chance of winning the 2017 championship. Three stage wins in its debut in Canberra tells us that the Mini, with Evans at the wheel, will be a contender for the rest of this year and into 2018. Solid performances by the likes of Brad Markovic and Toni Feaver, Tony Sullens and Kaylie Newell and Andrew and Kirra Penny sees them still in touch with the top four. The Australian 2WD Classic Rally Challenge continues to be a favourite with the spectators. They love the unmistakable sounds of classic rally cars roaring through the forests. Trevor Stilling has streaked away to a huge lead in the championship in his Datsun Stanza and will prove to be difficult to beat from here.
