HELLO

Welcome to Curating Cambridge: our city, our stories, our stuff. Read on, have a browse, explore and enjoy - you’ll find tiny performances in people’s homes, groundbreaking exhibitions, trails that will take you on journeys of discovery, silly shows that will split your sides, great big outdoor fun for families and lots more besides. The University of Cambridge Museums are presenting this five week programme of exhibitions, events and activity with the Festival of Ideas and other partners and organisations across the City. It’s about celebrating everything that makes Cambridge what it is – the people, the places, the tales and the triumphs. To help you browse and take your pick, we’ve divided the great range of events into themes: Exhibitions; Performance; Talks and Tours; Hands-on; and Families. Alongside an explanation of the event you’ll also find some other details: recommended age group; free or chargeable; if you can Drop-in during the set times; and whether you are required to book, with booking details. We have also included all events in a diary listing so you can see what’s on at a glance, day by day. For further information about venues, including access and normal opening times, please go to page 50. Curating Cambridge launches as part of the Festival of Ideas (20 October – 2 November), the Festival that unleashes the research and inspiration behind the arts, humanities and social sciences within the University. We’ve worked closely with the Festival team to develop a programme that is exciting, intriguing

and varied, and you’ll see that many events appear in both programmes. Check out the full Festival of Ideas programme at www.festivalofideas.cam.ac.uk

Why now? We are supported using public funding from Arts Council England and Cambridge City Council and are approaching the end of our three year funded programme. We’ve been busy developing projects, carrying out research, finding new ways to share our collections, getting to know our visitors and programming activities to bring our museums to life. Along the way we’ve worked with old friends, we’ve made new friends and now we’d like to make even more. Curating Cambridge has been developed in celebration of this, bringing together the brilliant work of cultural partners and community organisations across the city. Join us on a journey of exploration into the culture, community, passion, diversity, vision and individuality that is Cambridge.

Exhibitions Silent Partners Artist & Mannequin from Function to Fetish 14 October 2014 - 25 January 2015 Normal opening hours For centuries, the mannequin, or lay figure, was little more than a studio tool, a piece of equipment as necessary as easel, pigments and brushes. This major new loan exhibition reveals the multiple purposes it serves – from fixing perspective and painting reflections, to being a support for drapery and costume – and shows how it gradually moved centre stage to become the subject of the painting, photograph or film, eventually becoming a work of art in its own right. There will be paintings and drawings by Cézanne, Poussin, Millais, and Degas as well as photographs by and of Surrealist artists such as Man Ray and Salvador Dali; works by Jake and Dinos Chapman show that, even today, artists continue to be drawn to the creative potential unleashed by our artificial Others. Inside Out: Dr Auzoux’s papiermâché models of natural bodies 20 October 2014 23 January 2015 In 19th century France corpses were scarce and medical students needed them for their studies. Using a secret papiermâché mixture, Louis Auzoux came up with a solution, producing robust dissectible human models, later branching out into insects, horses’ teeth, flowers and fungi. Alongside the Fitzwilliam Museum’s exhibition, ‘Silent Partners: Artist and Mannequin from Function to Fetish’, the Whipple is re-displaying its collection of these spectacular models. Past, Present, Somewhere: films and projects by Nina Pope & Karen Guthrie

Buddha’s Word: The Life of Books in Tibet and Beyond

13 September - 23 November 2014 Normal opening hours A rare opportunity to enjoy the collected films and projects by artist duo Karen Guthrie and Nina Pope. Their participatory projects range from interactive online worlds to - in summer 2014 - a vast communitybuilt ‘model village’ made from cob (an ancient earth building technique), a commission for the University of Cambridge’s North West Cambridge Development. This exhibition follows the artists from their early video installations and websites to later large-scale sculptural work and feature-length films, screened daily in a specially constructed gallery cinema.

28 May 2014 17 January 2015 Normal opening hours Buddha’s Word is the first exhibition of Tibetan material in Cambridge. It displays some of the world’s oldest Sanskrit and Buddhist manuscripts and specimens of skilfully illuminated wooden covers.

Screening times: Jaywick Escapes (48 mins, Cert.15): 12pm Bata-ville: We Are Not Afraid of the Future (93 mins): 1pm Living with the Tudors (83 mins): 3pm Bata-ville: We are not afraid of the future The artists’ first film follows a group of UK visitors on a unique coach trip across Europe to the origins of the Bata shoe empire in Zlin in the Czech Republic. Jaywick Escapes The artists’ third documentary feature film. Once the favourite holiday destination for London’s Eastenders, seaside Jaywick is now ‘officially’ the poorest place in the UK, suffering from unremittingly high levels of crime, unemployment, dependency and family breakdown. Shot over a year, this sensitive film follows a handful of recent Jaywick arrivals as memories from their past holidays start to collide with the present. Contrasting with exquisitely shot footage of Jaywick’s extraordinarily characterful town-scape, are gritty observational scenes of the lives lived behind the closed doors of each seaside shack.

Micro Men: A Cambridge Story... 22 October 23 November 2014 Normal opening hours

Living with the Tudors After 4 years of participation as costumed historical re-enactors, Karen Guthrie and Nina Pope were given unprecedented access to the UK’s oldest and largest historical re-enactment at Kentwell Hall in rural Suffolk. Shot over an idyllic English summer from both behind the scenes and in front, this refined portraiture echoes the film’s persistent affectionate analysis of its central characters as we discover what these secretive enthusiasts are escaping from - and to. This German expressionist science fiction film, set in a futuristic urban dystopia, follows wealthy Freder’s attempts to span the gulf separating him from Maria and her city of underground workers. Calibrated in their movement by oppressive machines, the workers are incited to riot by a Machinenmensch. Sculptor Walter SchulzeMittendorff took a whole-body plaster cast of actress Brigitte Helm, for this deceptive robot which was constructed in ‘plastic wood’ to simulate its iconic metal effect. Introduced by Trish Sheil (Cambridgeshire Film Consortium) the film will be preceded by a short film montage of writing and images from workshops for adults and young people, inspired by the ‘Silent Partners’ exhibition. History would not normally have taken note of worker David Parr except for the amazing legacy he left in his small terrace house… discover this hidden gem in a series of tours. From the 1870’s – 1920’s he worked for the firm F R Leach. During this time the Leach firm collaborated with many of the famous architects and decorators of the day such as William Morris and George Bodley, working together on buildings not only in Cambridge but througout Britain. During David Parr’s spare time he decorated the interior of his home using the craftsmanship and decoration that was normally only seen on the interiors of the churches and high status homes that he adorned during his working hours. After his death the house was lived in by his granddaughter, Mrs Palmer, who married, raised a family and did her best to preserve her Grandfather’s vision for his house, layering her life on top of his but rarely destroying it, only covering it up. The David Parr House Charity has been set up to conserve the house and open it up to the wider public. We are at the very beginning of the project and this is a unique opportunity to see the house in its raw state and help us to think about how best to ‘curate’ the space for the future. 15 November 2014 2.00pm - 4.00pm Play Cambridge Now or Never! is a live art event that will disrupt, challenge and prompt people of all ages to play and re-imagine how urban public spaces are performed. We believe that unless we engage with the world around us today - opportunities will be gone tomorrow! Idit Elia Nathan and Helen Stratford are two artists who share an engagement with public spaces and how people interact within them. They proclaim that unless we reclaim the cities and landscapes around us in playful and performative ways they will become highly regulated spaces, that we will no longer be able to enjoy and call our own. Part walk, part conversation, part game, Play Cambridge Now or Never! will be a mobile-walking-meeting designed to solicit play, re-thinking and imagine new possibilities for the city of Cambridge.

The Campsite at Curating Cambridge 25 October 2014 (Saturday) -10.30pm - 4.30pm 26 October 2014 (Sunday) - 11.00am - 4.00pm A two-day extravaganza where museums step out of their normal homes and into a pop-up venue with a difference... Join us for fun, discovery and surprises. It’s the first weekend of half term and The Campsite has pitched up in Cambridge to celebrate in style. Join us at Christ’s Pieces (the Green between the Grafton Centre and Downing Street bus station) and find a pop-up collection of performances and activities created by artists in collaboration with each of the University’s museums and the Botanic Garden. You might hop inside a vintage campervan to hear a story, you might help to map the earth reduced down to the size of a tiny tent, perhaps you’ll squeeze into a 1980s caravan with six others and discover a mini live music concert, or you may just relax, enjoy a cup of tea and play some camping games. The Campsite is a pop-up venue: a collection of vintage campervans, caravans and tents, all of which become tiny venues for theatre, music, poetry, film and art installations. University of Cambridge Museums is pleased to support this Campsite project through public funding from Arts Council England. Suitable for all ages, Free, Drop-in Christ’s Pieces Green CB1 1JW

about us

Cambridge is home to amazing collections from around the world, many of

which are looked after by the eight University of Cambridge Museums and the Botanic Garden. Through objects, plants, artworks, specimens and samples we tell stories on a local and global scale, from the arts, the sciences and human nature.

Questioning Curating For museums curating is to select, to organise and to care for things, but it is also to tell a story or to ask a question, to pause for reflection or to enjoy a link to those who came before us. But what does it mean to you? Programming a season of theatre performances? Displaying sea shells collected from holidays on a window sill? Developing a blockbuster art exhibition? Planting a riot of colourful flowers in the garden? Commissioning art for public spaces? It’s certainly something that divides opinion, that inspires passion, and that gets people talking. We’ve joined in the conversation in The Art & Science of

Curation, a project exploring the definition of curation and the role of the curator. We’re asking people from within and outside museums and cultural organisations to share their thoughts. Read what they have to say and keep an eye out for special events at www.art-science-curation.org.uk

Children, young people, and getting out and about Throughout the year, the museums work with schools, youth groups, and community organisations to inspire people of all ages. From films made by secondary school Museum Ambassadors, to costumes created for Arbury Carnival, our collections excite imagination and curiosity. Visit www.cam.ac.uk/museums to find out more about what we do.
