Short Section through auditorium The project brief required an extension to this grade II listed building, in order to include a cafe and auditorium to transform this pump house into a visitors centre which promotes canoeing as an Olympic sport. The views below show the entrance lobby fitted with a new roof and skylight and modern light fittings juxtaposed against the existing brick walls. The edge of the auditorium is chamfered as shown in the section above. This is because the underside of the raking seats and staircase in an auditorium is arguably wasted space. This “space is then utilised to shelter the cafe below.

Junior School Redevelopment Project
On an attachment at Guy Hollaway Architects, I was asked to produce a hand made, crisp, high-quality physical model suitable for a competition entry for a brand new public primary school in Highgate, North London. The heart of the design was a complex, timber clad, oval form which housed the auditorium for the students. The proposed design blended in with the contours of the surrounding landscape made up with smooth curvilinear forms which welcomed the public into the building,as well as, providing sheltered play areas for the children. The design included an existing historical building known as “Ingleholme which made a sharp contrast between the old and the new. The following page explains the design in greater detail.

Outline Landscape Principles
To the front of the building there is a sloping pedestrianised access at a 1:20 fall leading up to the main entrance of the school. Located in this area are a number of benches and a covered parent waiting area. A low level secure wall divides the playground and the parent waiting areas. This would be manned by a member of staff at drop-off and collection. The main entrance faces North-East looking toward Bishopwood Road and the Mill building. We are not proposing any alternations to Bishopwood Road as this is outside of the site boundary. Ingleholme will remain the most dominant building being the highest and on the corner of Bishopwood Road and Hamstead Lane. Servicing, staff parking and bin stores are accessed from Hamstead Lane which ramps down to a turning head. Mature trees along the boundary to Hamstead Lane are retained. The plan shown is a roof plan which indicates sloping roofs with a central maintenance walkway accessed from the stair located next to the library. We have also identified and space for a possible extension should the school wish to extend future proofing the design.

The landscape is an external classroom where children will learn to explore. The external playground has been divided into a series of spaces for play. Directly in front of the curving façade of classrooms we are proposing a synthetic grass playground. This is accessed from each of the classrooms via a timber decked area. There are also three other designated areas of play; equipt playground, nature garden and the existing synthetic surface which we are proposing to be fenced for ball sports. Situated within the nature garden we are suggesting the inclusion of a ‘tree hut’. This could act as an external classroom providing the opportunity to learn about nature and our environment.

KEY IDENTIFICATION MAP
This map shows the analysis work done on Croydon High Street. It was found that the high street can be divided into three main zones in accordance to the functions of the spcaes which give off directly onto the high street. These functions include; Community, offices, retail, Restaurant, cafe and bar, Residential and Vacant spaces. From this information the high strreet was divided into three main zones, namely; Firstly the village (zone 3), Secondly the restaurant quater (Zone 1) and thirdly the link or “transformation” zone between the village and restaurant quater (Zone 2). Therefore the changes and refurbishment proposed emphasises on these three themes as can be seen in the before and after drawings proposed for this competition.

Existing Lighting to be reduced in scale to reflect to concept of creating the village feeling.
Some key / Specific building facades that require restoration above the shop front to be assess individually. in this instance the existing sign ‘ye market’ has been restored thus adding to the proposed village character / atmosphere.
3. The Village
Existing signage, to be removed from the building facades thus creating and more simplified and coherent signage strategy by means of a regularised shop front sign.
Existing corbeling between shops to be restored. this creates the coherent architectural language between shops. Existing area for signage could be used for a shop advertising, with a image of activity added to the glazing, thus indicating vibrancy to the street scene.
Coherent Architectural Feature
Zone 2 Vacant shops that are structurally stable could be made into ‘POP UP’ restaurants or food exhibition spaces until a permanent tenant has been found.
Dog tie up. Small interventions added creating a more village and social atmosphere, this could be created more artistically by the local community to add personality and individualism to a standardised item.
Shop entrance door has been recessed, to match neighboring building facades, this also creates a sense of individualized space, where signage / menus could be added.

Zone 3
Key Map Showing three main zones of Croydon High Street
Proposed building facade to be restored
The highlighted shop was the original central piece of architecture in the terrace hence the sign ‘ye market’ The shop facade looks to have been a 1970-80s addition and not within keeping to the village atmosphere and style we are aiming to recreate, therefore in our opinion this building becomes an ideal opportunity to reinstate some period design features.

Existing banners and or signage, to be removed from the building facades thus creating and more simplified and coherent signage/street strategy by means of a regularised size and location to shop front signs.
Re v italise
Existing shop fronts have been declutered and architecturally aligned, creating a more coherent signature/ language.
Shop awnings could be added to create a coherent architectural language between restaurants. Each shop could adopt its own colour of awnings creating visual separation however the size and style should be consistent.
Shop entrance door has been recessed, to create some much needed private external space. The image above is of another restaurant in the main highstreet that has already adopted the same idea. This private zone also creates a sense of individualized space, where signage / menus could be added. By adding bi folding external doors you can create the blend between inside and outside dinning experience.
Consistent Theme
Signage Band
Exploration required to asses if existing stone cobles are hidden under tarmac. By re introducing these could add some historical charm and character to the street.
Existing period features and shop devides need to be refurbished and enhanced.
Existing Site Photograph
Proposed building facade to be restored
Small moveable herb planters could be introduced to help reinforce the private defensible space / zone. The herbs invoke the senses associated with restaurants as well as adding some much needed greenery to building facades. The planters could pivot back in towards the building protecting the facade and the building recess from incident by means of forming a buffer zone.
Should a shop require shutters then we should design a timber recess that allows for this to be added subsiquently hidden.
If possible or required timber doors could be added to minimise the view into workshop, thus reducing any possible visual clutter.

Cobtree Competition, Maidstone, Kent We won this compettion, and it was the first project I was assigned on during my work attachment at Guy Hollaway Architects. I went on site visits and spent a lot of time in the park watching the movement of people as well as the type of clientel which came to the cabin. The client had a tight budget and wanted to retain the original kiosk, and add a new extention while making the whole building look brand new. The original roof of the kiosk was retained and reclad in timber shingles and the flat sedum roof shelters the new extention. The choice of materials blends in with its context in the park.

The Human Body Finding beauty within There has been a reversal of roles, where art and architecture, or the artefact gains a soul and feeling, and the human body on the other hand is discovered from a new light as a design, and a masterpiece. This project has been a journey of discovery of the human body, which started of relating more closely to the human body used as a scale in architecture, but which eventually branched out to the discovery of true beauty and getting in touch with feelings of the sublime. Additionally the artefact will prove that art, architecture, poetry and design all share a similar trait, which involves the artist giving up a little of him or herself to their creation, with the hope that their sweat and tears are felt as a feeling of peace or shock or overall satisfaction, on the other side, from the viewers point of view. Viewing the body as an efficient system which is linked harmoniously by a microscopic network of connections and housing specific zoning of functions expressed as organs, this exploration will aim to prove that the human body is arguably perfect from a design perspective. The project will seek to define true beauty found in the human body, this relates to its proportions, internal organs and vague complexities, as well as where humans feel real beauty.
