Life Is Good For
Growing up Dallas Smith had a real passion for music however he was reluctant to pursue his dream because he was a shy guy. He faced his fear and with his friends they started a band and played cover songs. Dallas was born and raised in Langley BC and lists his influences as Zeppelin, Alice in Chains, The Beatles, Reba and the Judds. He signed his first record deal as the lead singer of the rock band “Default”. They recorded and released four albums and have sold more than a million albums. Their biggest single was “Wasting My Time”. A few artists from the rock genre attempted a career in country music like Brett Michaels from Poison but for most success evaded them in the country music field. It has been a different story for Dallas Smith. Remember his influences were The Beatles, Reba and The Judds. With Reba and The Judds as influencers it was an easier transition for Dallas to move from the rock world into country and he was met with open arms. Listen to Dallas’s songs and the way he delivers them and one can see country music is his home. He sings with passion and his lyric’s are ones that listeners can associate with. It was in May 2012 that Dallas released his solo debut album Jumped Right In a project that netted a GOLD single, 5 CCMA Award nominations and a JUNO Award nomination for Country Album of the Year. He followed with the infectious Platinum-selling single “Tippin’ Point” and dominated the Canadian Country charts with songs like "Lifted" and multiweek #1 hit "Wastin' Gas."
Dallas is the only Canadian male country artist to spend multiple weeks at the top of the Country Airplay Chart in the Nielsen BDS era for single “Wastin’ Gas.” Piling on the accolades, Smith is the 2015 JUNO Award winner for Country Album of the Year (LIFTED), and the CCMA Award winner for Album of the Year (LIFTED). Rolling Stone Country praised, “Dallas dialed up the amplified noise” during his set at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas, marking him as “one of the weekend’s most familiar faces.” The seasoned performer has also been on The Huffington Post’s radar as one of 15 Country Artists To Watch, highlighting his ability to draw crowds of more than 25,000 fans. Here is some interesting facts on Dallas •
#1 Mediabase most played Canadian on country radio in Canada for 2014 and 2015
•
#1 BDS most played Canadian on country radio in Canada for 2015
•
#1 Canadian country artist on the BDS Top 50 All Format Artists chart for 2015
•
3 singles in the BDS Top 25 Canadian Country Songs chart for 2015 (Wastin’Gas, Lifted and Cheap Seats)
•
2 singles in the Mediabase ‘2015 Country Chart’ (Top 50 overall, includes international) (Wastin’ Gas and Lifted)
•
Only Canadian Country Artist to have all of his charted songs peak in the top ten (current total is 12 songs)
I have spent a virtual weekend with Dallas. I have spent time watching his video’s and listening to his new album “Side Effects”. Produced by studio ace and long-time collaborator Joey Moi (Florida Georgia Line, Chris Lane), “SIDE EFFECTS” features 12 tracks, penned by some of country music’s most popular songwriters including The Cadillac Three’s Jaren Johnston who has written #1 songs for the likes of Tim McGraw and Keith Urban. The album showcases Smith’s incredible range and confirms this is an artist who knows which lane he wants to be in – pushing forward and soaring ahead. Earlier this year, Smith released the infectious single “One Little Kiss” which soared to #1 on the iTunes digital country singles chart upon its April 22nd release and reached Top 5 at Canadian country radio. The new single (and Smith’s first ballad), “Autograph” delivers unparalleled vocals from one of the best voices in Canadian country music – appealing to audiences far beyond the boundaries with sonic layers and a stadium sized voice that flourishes on the edge of global superstar. His new single “Autograph” was the Top DMDS Download/all formats and #1 Mediabase Top Add – all formats. Dallas tells us “Autograph” was originally intended for the last album, “Lifted” but Keith Urban had dibs on the song. He was so happy when Keith didn’t record it and it became available for him to release. He’s hoping to share a chuckle with Keith when he plays the song on the Urban tour dates. This is one of my favourites from the album and I can see why it was chosen as a single. I am sure this single will quickly find its way to the top of the charts. Dallas currently has the #1 selling record in the country (all genres) on iTunes. SIDE EFFECTS Track listing 1. Only One You 2. Side Effects 3. Sky Stays This Blue 4. Tab With My Name On It 5. Autograph 6. 50/50 7. Kids With Cars 8. Hoods And Tailgates 9. One Little Kiss 10. I’m Already Gone 11. Sleepin’ Around 12. Twelve Pack Soundtrack
Dallas is nominated for four CCMA Awards this week including the coveted Fan Choice Award, Male Vocalist of the Year, Single of the Year for “Cheap Seats” and Interactive Artist or Group of the Year. Dallas will not be at Country Music Week this year due to his touring schedule with Keith Urban. Dallas will join Keith Urban as his “invited” special guest and direct support on the Canadian run of the “ripCORD World Tour 2016” kicking off September 10th in his hometown of Vancouver, BC. The tour also includes the first ever Country show to take place at the all-new Rogers Place in Edmonton, AB on September 16th.

Add to that the platinum records as a producer, the widely acclaimed Murphy’s Laws of Songwriting articles used as part of curriculum at colleges, universities and by songwriter organizations, his success as the publisher and co-owner of the extremely successful Pic-a-lic Group of Companies, and you see a pattern of achievement based on more than just luck. The Country Music Week Songwriting Workshop will hone in on Murphy’s ability to dig into the nuts and bolts of song structure, while lending his perspective to the mysterious connection between songwriter, song and audience. It has been a must-attend event for years now with an average attendance of over 150 delegates each year. These workshops have been described as speed dating without the kissing!!! They provide endless of amounts information in a very close and intimate setting, but with no exchangeable commitment. It’s made up of 11 work stations. Each station contains a speaker(s) with a specific topic. The delegates are informed of the stations and topics prior to starting. They have 15 mins. to ask questions, gather business cards and listen to the panelists. After 15 mins. the panelists move to the next station, and start over. The aim is to provide the very best business and artistic information in a simple, comfortable setting. It’s all about building relationships, making connections and moving forward. Let’s face it, those who attend a seminar like this are “self-financed”, “self-managed” and are looking for a way to get to the NEXT LEVEL. The roundtables provide that forum. As the CCMA mission statement says we need to educate, elevate so that may celebrate our new found Canadian talent. Personally, for me it’s about GIVING BACK. THE CANADIAN COUNTRY MUSIC ASSOCIATION CELEBRATES 40 YEARS!
Sometimes it is a good thing to look back at some of the history of your industry. Many of today’s top artists were probably not even born when the association first started. I remember talking with Vince Gill once and he was telling me the story about having dinner in a Nashville restaurant with a friend when a guy walked up to his table and said he always admired Vince and his music. He asked for an autograph and Vince asked him what he does. The guy said I’m a singer and I just came to town. Vince looked at him and said how old are you? The guy said 45 and asked for any advice. Vince’s advice was don’t do it for fame and money do it because you love it. The guy thanked him and walked away. Vince looked at his friend and said that guy has no idea but this is a Young Man’s Town. From that chance meeting Vince wrote a song called Young Man’s Town. Those words are so true our industry is based on youth. The Canadian Academy of Country Music Entertainment was established in 1975, renamed the Academy of Country Music Entertainment (ACME) in 1976 and changed their name to The Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) in 1986. RPM initiated the Big Country Awards in 1975 They were discontinued when ACME/CCMA established its own awards in 1982. In 1982 the first winners were Fan Choice (I believe it was Entertainer of the Year back then) Family Brown, Male Artist was Terry Carisse, Female Artist was Carol Baker and Group was The Family Brown. Cool To Look At The History About Canadian Country Music Country music was introduced to Canadian audiences by US radio. Early shows on WBAP, Fort Worth (beginning in 1923), WLS, Chicago (‘WLS Barn Dance’ 1924), and WSM, Nashville (‘Grand Ole Opry’ 1925), as well as on the later (1933) and influential WWVA, Wheeling, WV, were heard in many parts of Canada. Country music soon was broadcast on Canadian radio, beginning with George Wade and His Cornhuskers on CFRB, Toronto, in 1928, and Don Messer on CFBO, Saint John, NB, in 1929. I would never have guessed that CFRB in Toronto aired a country show. Mainstream country music flourished during the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s in the hands of established performers and of such newer artists as Carroll Baker, Mike Graham, Bootleg, Marie Bottrell, Tommy Hunter, Canadian Zephyr, Glory-Anne Carriere, Terry Carisse, Errol Ranville the C-Weed Band, Eddie Eastman, the Family Brown, Gary Fjellgaard, George Fox, Gilles Godard, Dallas Harms, the Midnite Rodeo Band, Anne Murray, Chris Nielson, Anita Perras, Ronnie Prophet, Donna Ramsey and Lee Roy, R. Harlan Smith, South Mountain, David Thompson, and Laura Vinson.
Several singers and bands in the 1980s, among them Blue Rodeo, Ray Condo and the Hard Rock Goners, the Cowboy Junkies, the Dots, Grevious Angels, Junior Gone Wild, Rang Tango, the Razorbacks, and most notably k.d. lang, brought new elements to traditional country styles, or country influences to rock and pop, and introduced the music to a wider audience. Lang also participated in country music’s neo-traditionalist movement of the 1980s, as did the Great Western Orchestra. The Toronto station CFGM, the first (1968) to program country music exclusively, produced the syndicated ‘Opry North’. Established in 1976 in emulation of Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry, it continued until CFGM curtailed its country music policy in 1990. Today country music is the top radio format of any genre of music drawing a younger demographic while maintaining the core country music fan. 40 Years is a big deal! Congratulations to everyone who works in our industry. Now let’s look at this year’s nominees and our picks or should I say guesses of who will win.
THE 2016 CCMA AWARD NOMINEES What we will do in this area of the magazine is take our best guess at who think the winners may be. We spotlight them in yellow. Spotlight on Fan Choice Award Nominees
I first met Dean when he was signed with Broken Bow Records. A good guy who has come a long way since then. Dean has built a solid fan base across Canada with over 71,000 FB likes and 49,500 followers on Twitter. His tours always do well and continues to have hit after hit. Dean is well deserving of this award.
Brett has had a record year with performances with Garth Brooks, a new baby and a great year with hit records and sold out tours including his special homecoming concert. Brett let’s his fans in on his career and all aspects of his life from singing at the breakfast table to his daughter or traveling and showing off his dog. This is why Brett has over 42,000 FB likes and over 46.000 Twitter followers. I am sure if he wins it will be because his fans are “Cool With That”.
Johnny Reid is the real deal and a great guy. He is a great interview and over the years has shown why he is a fan favourite. His live show is high energy and he has a sound all his own with a voice that stands out. His music and vocal delivery are full of soul that makes him stand out in the format. He has built a strong fan base with his Tartan Army, has 155,092 FB likes and over 30,000 Twitter followers.
Dallas Smith comes to us from the rock world where he was part of the very successful Default. His transition into the country format has come easy for Dallas showing that his roots and heart are in country and his music has been accepted by radio and fans alike. Again Dallas has a sound that makes him stand out and he has built a strong country following with over 62,000 FB likes and over 57.000 Twitter followers.
I spent a lot of years living and working in Montreal. One thing I always noticed was that there are big stars in Quebec that the rest of Canada may not of heard of before. This is the case with Yoan however he won a CCMA Award last year for Top Selling Canadian Album. The winner of Season 2 of the reality television series La Voix in 2014 which is the Quebec version of The Voice. Yoan has over 84,000 likes on FB and close to 9,000 Twitter followers. Quebec fans are unlike any other fans. They are active and will do anything to see their favourite star succeed. We at Canada Country Aircheck have been asked many times who is Yoan. Now you have a bit of insight. All of the above artists are deserving of winning this category however it all comes down to how many of their fans go in and vote. Sunday will tell us who wins in this category.
THE RISING STAR AWARD This is an important award with any artists showing them that their peers think they are on the right track with their careers. They are the major stars of tomorrow. We thought we would spotlight them here.
Cold Creek County come by their name naturally. Cold Creek, after all, runs through the rolling hills, apple orchards and villages in central Ontario near locations the band members call home. Nestled in the rural in-betweens of Peterborough and Belleville, Ontario,Brandon Scott (lead vocals/acoustic guitar) calls Brighton, population 4,800, home. Drummer Doug Oliver is from nearby Hastings and its 1,200 population. Josh Lester (guitar/vocals) and Justin Lester (bass/vocals), the sons of bluegrass master Emory Lester, hail from the outskirts of Frankford, population 2,500. Lead guitarist Trevor MacLeod, the relative city slicker in the group, is originally from Stratford, Ontario, population 30,000. Band members literally cross Cold Creek to get to each other’s homes. “I’m a small town guy and I love it,” says Oliver. “Because I’ve been here so much and my community has been so supportive, everyone is loving and small towns have that I’ve-got-your-back vibe no matter what.” They have four singles out in the past year “Our Town”, Til The Wheels Come Off”, “Beer Weather” and their new single “Still That Way”. Their first single “Our Town” reached into the top 10 and “Til The Wheels Come Off” and Beer Weather” both charted in the top 20.
Alee released her debut album, This Road Goes Everywhere, on July 18, 2013. Her 2013 single "Don't Say You Love Me" reached the top 25 on the Billboard Canada Country chart. Alee brings her fresh up tempo style and sound to listeners across the world, redefining country music -- and with a strong musical background, she has the goods to back it up. A singer-songwriter-musician-entertainer regarded for her musicianship, the strength of her original songs, and charismatic performance, Alee has the versatility of a veteran performer with the ability to take her songs from full band down to a simple acoustic performance, varying each show from the preceding one, in an essence described by her audiences as engaging, passionate and authentic. Her ability to entertain is reflected with performances and accolades which span festivals including Big Valley Jamboree, Carlton Trail Jamboree, Westerner Days, Capital Ex, Canadian Finals Rodeo, among shows on Edmonton's Winspear stage and The Jubilee Auditorium as well as performing for charity/gala events and other western Canadian venues, while growing recognition to the East and south to Nashville.
Restless spirit and fearless determination, coupled with a ferocious belief in loyalty and a hint of a hopeless romantic, are all qualities that manifest in David James (MDM Recordings Inc. / Universal Music Canada) and can be found haunting his lyrics. David lives by the motto “nothing worth having comes easy and opportunity looks a lot like hard work,” and work hard he does. With an upcoming performance at Boots and Hearts, a new EP, and two 2016 Canadian Country Music Association® (CCMA®) Award nominations in the Rising Star and Recording Package of the Year (for album Songs About A Girl) categories, David has been busy mapping out his 2016 musical trajectory. His debut 6 song EP Songs About A Girl (release date: March 11, 2016) was produced in collaboration with music industry’s esteemed Darren Savard (Dallas Smith) and Carly Savard (One More Girl). Three years in the making, every note has been meticulously crafted to evoke the deepest and complex emotions amidst the listeners. Says James about the album, “These songs carry aspects of the human experience we all share – love, passion, perseverance, and really laying it all on the line for those you care about.”
River Town Saints is a Canadian country music group from Ottawa, Ontario composed of Chris Labelle, Chris McComb, Jeremy Bortot, Jordan Potvin and Daniel DiGiacomo. Labelle, McComb and Bortot formed the trio Labelle in 2013, later adding Potvin and DiGiacomo and changing their name to River Town Saints. The group began playing shows around their hometown in 2014. They signed to Open Road Recordings in July 2015 and released their debut single, "A Little Bit Goes a Long Way", in November of that same year. The song debuted on the Billboard Canada Country chart in January 2016. A music video, filmed in Ottawa, premiered on CMT the following month. Since early 2015, the band has opened for Tim Hicks, Eli Young Band, Kenny Chesney, Brad Paisley, and Tim McGraw.
n the few short years they have been together, The Washboard Union have defied classification and have become one of the most exciting and talked about new bands on the Canadian Country music scene. They won Roots Artists of the Year by the British Columbia Country Music Association, have signed on with the country music power house team at Sakamoto Entertainment and inked a recording deal Warner Music Canada/Slaight Music. The Washboard Union are a sextet out of Vancouver, British Columbia that are led by principle members Aaron Grain, Chris Duncombe and David Roberts. The three share a very similar unconscious soundtrack and unbridled love for the art of songwriting and storytelling. The three have been friends seemingly forever and the music they make has set them apart as one of the most unique talents in country music today. Duncombe & Grain eventually packed up and left their hometown of Kelowna, BC. and ventured to Vancouver where they moved in to a magnificently beautiful 1920’s Tudor style mansion. By coincidence Roberts was himself renting in the same mansion and would occasionally join the brothers for impromptu single malt fueled jam sessions. It was here the all three began writing and singing together. These early session would be the kernels of what would blossom and eventually give rise to The Washboard Union.Living there at that time Roberts would reminisce “was like living in a garden gone to seed.” Grain provided guitar and vocals and Duncombe added his own voice and a banjo. Roberts, a singer and multi-instrumentalist with harmonica, guitar, mandolin and of course, the washboard in his arsenal, became the team’s secret weapon. The Washboard Union is an authentic blend of where country and bluegrass have come and where they are headed next. It is for that reason that the band has gathered so many fans along the way.Serving notice that they are not about to confirm to convention, the band’s independently released self-titled debut album was produced by noted rock producers GGGarth Richardson (Nickleback, Biffy Ckyro, Hedley) and Canadian Music Hall of famer Bob Ezrin (Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd) – on the track “Half Cree” – whom the band are proud to call a friend and mentor. That record led to the band’s BC Country Music Association nomination.
Again all are deserving in this category and we believe win or not they are all Rising Stars that will be a major force in country music over the next year and beyond. Congratulations to all the Rising Star Nominees!

“We are loving what Old Dominion is putting out these days and we’ve wanted to do our spin on one of their songs for a while,” tenor Rob Lundquist told Sweety High. “‘Snapback’ is one of those tunes that just gets stuck in your head, so we thought we’d take a stab at arranging it. We’re diggin’ it and hoping our fans (aka Home Fries) enjoy it too!” Directed by Reilly Zamber, McKenzie Zamber, and Jimmy Bates of FifGen Films, “Snapback” was shot in the days following Home Free’s appearance at Oregon Jamboree in Albany, OR this summer.
