Canada Soccer Match Program (2015-11-13)

CANADA SOCCER On behalf of Canada Soccer, I am pleased to welcome fans from across the country to BC Place, Vancouver, BC, for the opening match in CONCACAF Round 4 of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ Qualifiers against Honduras, one of our fiercest rivals dating back to the early 1980s. As we have joined the group of 12 CONCACAF nations competing to advance to the hexagonal round, there is plenty for which our Canadian soccer community should be excited. If the hiring of Benito Floro in 2013 was an indication of our commitment to the future success of our Men’s National Team on the international stage, the team’s recent performances - Canada having posted a record of five wins, five draws and two losses in 12 international matches so far this year - can only set the stage for the all-important journey ahead. There is a role for all of us to play as we establish Canada as a leading soccer nation. As such, I would like to thank our fans that have responded to the invitation and decided to join us on the Road to Russia. We would also call upon our entire soccer community to proudly and loudly demonstrate their support and continue to represent #CanadaRED from sea to sea to sea. Together, we are #CanadaRED. Victor Montagliani President, Canada Soccer

RUSSIA 2018 The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ is the biggest single-sport event in the world. From 209 member associations from around the world, 32 finalists will qualify for the 32-day event that is played in 11 cities from 14 June to 15 July 2018. More than 840 international matches are expected to be played in 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ Qualifiers from 2015 to 2017. The matches are played through six confederations, with CONCACAF representing nations in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. From 35 CONCACAF nations, three or four nations will reach the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ finals. After three rounds, 23 CONCACAF nations have already been eliminated, leaving 12 nations fighting for the 3.5 spots to Russia 2018. In CONCACAF Round 4, these 12 nations are split into three groups of four nations, with each group’s round-robin table scheduled to eliminate two teams by September 2016. The last six nations will compete in a 2016-17 round-robin phase (commonly referred as the “Hex”) from which the top-three nations will qualify for 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ finals. CONCACAF’s fourth-best nation, meanwhile, will face Asia’s fifth-best nation in an intercontinental playoff for one last chance to reach the Russia 2018 finals. From the CONCACAF semi finals in 2012, nine nations have returned to the region’s final 12 spots in 2015-16, while Antigua & Barbuda, Cuba and Guyana have all been eliminated. This time around, Haiti, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago have reached the CONCACAF semi finals for 2015-16. As for Canada, they reached the CONCACAF semi finals after winning their twomatch, total goals series in Round 2 against Dominica (6-0 aggregate) and in Round 3 against Belize (4-1 aggregate). Canada now faces El Salvador, Honduras, and Mexico in Group A of the CONCACAF semi finals. Each nation plays six matches over three international windows (home and away each time): 13 & 17 November; 25 & 29 March; and 2 & 6 September. Canada need all the #CanadaRED support they can get to push them through to CONCACAF’s final hexagonal round of six nations. Fans can learn more about Canada’s journey via www.canadasoccer.com while also following #canMNT on Facebook (canadasoccer), Twitter (@CanadaSoccerEN) and Instagram (@canadasoccer).
