CHAMPIONNAT 1962-1972 CHAMPIONSHIP

The competition sometimes switched format, but most often played towards a national final between two teams. In 1962, only three teams were involved (with Winnipeg receiving a bye into the final); in 1963, there was no competition. Newfoundland Labrador joined in 1967, New Brunswick joined in 1969, Northwest Territories in 1971, and Prince Edward Island joined in 1972. In 1966 and 1970, the club competition was replaced by an Inter-Provincial tournament of select teams. In all years, the national champion was awarded the Challenge Trophy.

CHAMPIONNAT 1973 - 1984 CHAMPIONSHIP

The competition switched from playdowns to a Final Round concept in one host city. There were six teams in 1973, then four teams in ensuing years from 1974 to 1984. The host qualified automatically while the other teams qualified via regional playdowns. The national winner was presented the Challenge Trophy. From 1977 to 1982, the tournament was sponsored by Labatt’s; in 1983 and 1984, the tournament was sponsored by Molson Breweries.
