Dear Friends...Shalom! It is a great privilege for me to join you today as a friend of Israel to honour the work and great accomplishments in the spirit of the Biblical directive, “Let us now praise the famous!” It is more than fitting that we honour the ongoing excellence and humanitarian contributions of Shalom Village to the quality of life for our elders in the Jewish Canadian community. Today, we honour those whose vision and commitment helped build Shalom Village and to those staff and volunteers past and present for their strong example of voluntary service. Jewish Canadians have been strengthened in their religious and cultural identity handed down to them by an unbroken line which originates in the land of Israel. You have truly honoured you mothers’ and fathers’ as well as their memories by setting an outstanding example for all Canadians through your kindness, your compassion and your care with dignity. The efforts of staff and volunteers are a profound gift to our province and our community has been blessed by your contributions. Mazel tov,

Ms. Lorraine Cohen Jewish National Fund of Canada, Hamilton Hamilton, Ontario Canada Dear Lorraine, It is with great pride that we send you greetings on the occasion of the 2008 Hamilton Negev Dinner. This year is a very special year as it marks both the 60th Anniversary of the State of Israel as well as the 40th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem. Throughout the history of the Jewish National Fund, the Jewish community of Hamilton has always been a true partner in developing the State of Israel for the Jewish people and the betterment of the quality of life of its inhabitants. On behalf of the board of Directors of Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael, we would like to extend our thanks and appreciation for your devoted support. We are proud to honour such a distinguished institution as the Shalom Village and to pay tribute to it for its role. It is especially heartening to see that the proceeds of the Hamilton Negev Dinner will be directed toward the Kiriat Eliezer Promenade. This project is a very worthy project that will serve the residents of Haifa and in particular the residents of the Kiriat Eliezer neighborhood. The facelift that the promenade is going to receive a warm welcome by the elderly residents of Kiriat Eliezer that have used the rundown facility until now. May the Jewish National Fund of Hamilton continue its contribution and commitment to Israel. Yishar Koach! Sincerely Yours,

Spiritual Leader: Rabbi Daniel Green Rabbi Emeritus: Rabbi Morton Green President: Mr. Stanley Katz Executive Director: Mr. Aaron Shiffman
1 Iyar, 5768 June 4, 2008 There are many prayers that ascend to Heaven. Yet, Abraham’s special request seems to baffle the mind. According to Jewish tradition, Abraham beseeches G-d not only to merit length of days but to fully experience the process of aging. In a society that celebrates youth, this appeal seems to be foreign and counterintuitive. What reasonable man would cast aside the vigor of youth for the challenges of old age? Perhaps, Abraham understood that the process of aging provides us with the perspective to appreciate life in a deeper and more profound way. Life rushes us by, but all too often we rush life by. To be able to take a moment of pause and view life through the prism of experience is truly a blessing. The Torah instructs us to grant honour to the elderly. This is not only a simple courtesy but it is recognition of the vast reservoir of knowledge that one gains through a lifetime of challenges and accomplishments. In this vein, Shalom Village stands as a hollowed treasure house of wisdom and beauty within our community. How fortunate are we to be blessed with a community leader such as Pat Morden. Pat is truly a “gem” who is regarded by her industry as one of the top executives in the field. Her unprecedented professionalism is matched only by her heart of gold and spirit of love. As we celebrate with JNF the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel, we salute Pat Morden for all her great accomplishments on behalf of our community. With warm wishes,
Rabbi Daniel Green Adas Israel Congregation

UJA FEDERATION AND JEWISH NATIONAL FUND “STANDING SHOULDER TO SHOULDER IN BUILDING THE PEOPLE AND LAND OF ISRAEL!”
Ms. Lorraine Cohen, President Jewish National Fund 908 – 105 Main St, West Hamilton, On. L8N 1G8
Dear Lorraine, On behalf of the UJA Federation of Hamilton Board of directors, its beneficiary agencies and the organized Jewish community, it is my great pleasure to extend our congratulations to you and our JNF family on the selection of Shalom Village as Honorees of the 2008 JNF Negev Dinner. Much like the effort to rebuild the land of Israel, the effort to build Shalom Village into the world renowned facility it has become has been an intense labor of love, engaging the passions of entire Jewish community. From this perspective, there is no more obvious Hamilton partnership than this. This wonderful initiative has opened the doors for all kinds of new and creative thinking about how our local institutions can come together in shared initiatives that strengthen our community in Hamilton and also strengthen our efforts on behalf of Israel. Tonight, we join hands with Shalom Village, with JNF and the entire Jewish community in our shared and unshakeable commitment to the building of our community and the people and land of Israel. Together, we can never fail.

A tribute to the founding and sustaining leadership of Shalom Village
“You must be the change you want to see in the world.” Mahatma Gandhi
These leaders had a vision of Shalom Village – a home where our community could fulfill the commandment to honour our mothers and our fathers. These extraordinary leaders reached beyond what was known, creating and sustaining a truly unique and wonderful home. The leadership of these individuals who made this vision a vibrant reality is being celebrated as Shalom Village accepts, with pride, recognition as JNF Negev Dinner honouree in Hamilton. In honouring Shalom Village we are honouring the leadership and dedication of these visionary people and of the many who worked with them to make Shalom Village a reality.

THE PROJECTS
Shalom Village halom Village is a dream that became a reality through the dedication of our community. The dream was to make it possible for our parents, spouses – people we loved who needed extra support – to remain vibrant members of our families and community. It was to be a place to call home, a change of address – closer to care, but not farther from their lives.
S
Since its inception in the late seventies, Shalom Village has grown to find new and more meaningful ways to make life possible in the face of often overwhelming health challenges. Today, home to over 200 people, and home away from home to many more, Shalom Village is a recognized leader and innovator in providing services to older adults. These services include long term care, assisted living apartments, a day program for adults, convalescent care and a fitness centre for people over the age of 70. All of our services reflect our mission to honour our Fathers and our Mothers, by providing them the opportunity to get on with their lives, receiving health and social services, convalescent and palliative care all within the context of Jewish values and Kashruth.

A PROFILE
Thanks to the generosity of donors, the innovative practices of our excellent staff and our commitment to education and research through The Ruth Sherman Centre, Shalom Village has helped define what is possible now and in the future. Our affiliation with McMaster University increases our ability to influence the future through the many students who spend time learning and contributing to Shalom Village. The Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA) model developed at Shalom Village has been adopted by organizations across the province as an effective tool for managing difficult behaviours associated with dementia. Other initiatives, such as the Sexuality Guidelines developed at Shalom Village have had an international impact. Created from a dream that aspired to make the ongoing celebration of life possible in a home for seniors, Shalom Village continues to make possibilities possible for those who are part of our community today and those who will need us in the future. Your donations of time and money will allow this to continue – through the Possibilities Fund. What is possible? Novelist Elmore Leonard advises aspiring writers never to open a book with weather. It is an unnecessary distraction from what is really important – the people and their stories. Mr. Leonard tells us that readers don’t want to be dragged through a maze of adjectives - let the characters speak for themselves. We agree … so to show what we are making possible here are our stories… RUTH’S CHALLENGES Ruth is a loving mother with a distinguished career whose advanced frontal-lobe dementia has presented challenges to her entire family. She requires total assistance for all activities of daily living and sometimes exhibits aggressive behaviour. She experiences severe pain due to osteoporosis and is at high risk for falls. The team who works with Ruth employ the Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA) model developed at Shalom Village to manage her care. “Since my Mother Ruth moved to Shalom Village in the summer of 2007, I have been profoundly touched by the extraordinary dignity, respect and thoughtfulness of all those involved in her care,” said her daughter Anne. “Ruth dedicated her professional career to being an advocate for the needs of children in hospital, who with their families, looked to the staff to help them when they were most vulnerable. Now at a critical and vulnerable stage in her own life, the staff of Shalom have reached out to Ruth with a level of care I know she would applaud.” JIM’S APARTMENT Jim thought he was happy living in his own home. He came to Shalom Village to recover from a stroke, fully expecting to return to his apartment. As he regained his strength he realized just how much life at Shalom had to offer and decided stay.
Jim’s days are full since his move home to Shalom. He participates in a variety of activities and works out in The Club several times a week. A skilled artist, his passion to create has been reignited and he has presented two well-received art shows at Shalom Village. “I’ve never regretted moving here for a minute” he says now. “I am so much more active than when I lived alone.” AARON “Shalom Village is near and dear to my heart,” says Aaron, who has been a volunteer, a family member, a staff member and a resident at various times. “When my wife lived here it felt like home. After she died I just kept coming back.” Aaron has meant a lot to Shalom Village as well, guiding our observance of Jewish dietary laws and leading by example.. He is highly regarded by staff and residents who often seek his advice and value his friendship. JOSIE When Josie returned home after suffering a stroke she and her husband were unable to cope and she was readmitted to hospital. When she arrived at Shalom Village the Goldies2Home team found that she thrived in their specialized rehab program designed to help people regain the skills they need for independent living. Her passion to succeed in spite of a language barrier and health challenges was inspiring. I have my life back! Josie made many meaningful connections at Goldie’s. She taught the group to make gnocchi with home-made tomato sauce and she enjoyed walking down to the Corner Store to look at gifts for her grandchildren. During one of her daily walks, Josie turned to her companion and said “I feel like I have my life back!” Through collaboration with the CCAC, we were able to fast-track Josie’s admission to Goldie’s Place regular program based on her risk for readmission to hospital. Today Josie attends Goldie’s Place 3 days a week and enjoys every minute of it. With the support of the Goldie’s team Josie has been able to stay out of hospital and she and her husband remain in their home. ED AND HEATHER It had been a long time since Ed and Heather walked down the street together. This simple pleasure had been denied to them ever since health problems made it impossible for Ed to walk on his own. Now, with the help of a Neurogym Bungee Walker and the support of the mobility team at The Club Fitness Centre, Ed is able to stand and walk with no fear of falling. The Shalom Village Ladies’ Auxiliary raised funds at their Annual

SHALOM VILLAGE Tea to help purchase two pieces of Neurogym equipment, designed to help people regain lost mobility. The equipment includes the “bungee walker” and a “sit to stand” machine that helps people stand from a sitting position with the assistance of counterweights. The weight is gradually reduced as the person gains strength. Heather beamed as she walked with Ed along Shalom Village’s York Street. “I’ll have him up and washing dishes tonight!” she exclaimed with a smile. MARTHA AT THE SEDER When she was growing up the Passover Seder was a special time for Martha and her family. It was a communal sharing of the Passover story as they made their way through the many courses of the special Passover meal. After she married and had children of her own she continued the tradition. It was a deeply spiritual ritual that helped them connect with each other and the traditions of their ancestors. Now that she calls Shalom Village home the Seder is still fundamental to Martha’s observance of Passover. Martha’s son joins her and her extended Shalom Village family at the Seder table as they once again recite their parts and tell the Passover story in their own unique way. AMEDEO IN THE GARDEN Amedeo is a man of the soil. Coming from a culture that prizes the gifts provided by Mother Nature, he has always valued the time he spends in the garden, nurturing seedlings and coaxing the bounty from the earth. It was more than a pastime or a hobby – it was a way for him to provide food for his family. In a small vegetable patch behind Shalom Village, staff help Amedeo tend the lettuce, tomatoes and herbs that go into the salads at Bubbi Bessie’s Café. They also help him care for the flowers in the Gussie Sobel garden and grow tomatoes in pots on the balcony of his dining room on the second floor. For Amedeo, gardening is a “deeper experience” that has meaning to him. The possibilities fund provides the staff and resources to help him continue to live life on his own terms JACK’S BIG SMILE Jack is people person who is known for his big smile. After retiring from the insurance business he wanted to keep busy in a meaningful way. He loves volunteering at Shalom Village because he goes home feeling like he has made a difference. “It is so rewarding to know that my friends look forward to my visits,” he says. Jack has high praise for the staff he works with at Shalom Village. “They are like Angels,” he says.
HARRY’S WOOD SHOP Harry is a retired cabinetmaker. Ever since he moved home to Shalom Village, he dreamed of a place where people could share his joy of working with wood. Thanks to Harry’s founding donation Shalom Village has made this dream come true. Your support has made it possible for us to bring in a carpenter to run woodworking programs and now many residents, both men and women, have learned new skills and created projects that demonstrate the possibilities. AL AND RUBY Al and Ruby are stalwarts of the Jewish community and have been long time supporters of Shalom Village. More recently Shalom Village has gained new meaning to them as Al’s health problems have presented new challenges. In the past couple of years Al has joined the exercise program at The Club Fitness Centre, stayed at Shalom Village for respite care and participated in the day program at Goldie’s Place. “I don’t know what we would have done if Shalom Village hadn’t been there for us,” said Ruby. “I now understand why our support has meant so much over the years.” DYING AT HOME AT SHALOM The end of life can be a difficult time for any family. Shalom Village has a specially trained team that makes comfort, dignity and spiritual support possible in time of need. “We focus on the person, not the disease,” said team leader Cathy McDowell. “It is a seamless transition that is tailored to each family’s situation.” “When Mother was dying” said one family member, “the staff was very thoughtful. They did their best to manage her pain and made sure there was always someone to hold her hand. When the room got crowded they invited visitors down to Bubbi Bessie’s for a cup of coffee and they provided a quiet room for us to rest.” Many of the staff and volunteers on the team have received advanced training in end of life care. They are the same people who already know the resident and their family. They provide comfort and support in the familiar surroundings of the resident’s own room. STORIES The stories of Shalom Village reflect the original dream – a home in our community for people to maintain and grow a deep connection to their families, their lives and their community. Honouring our Fathers and our Mothers is G-D’s commandment to us all. At Shalom Village it is also our mission and our commitment both now and for the future.

THE JNF:
Still Meeting Israel’s needs AFTER
107 YEARS
T
he Jewish National Fund – Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael – was founded in 1901 to purchase land for the return of the Jewish people to its historic homeland. In the 107 years since its creation, the organization has worked tirelessly to restore the land, to enhance and foster environmental quality and to nurture Zionist values. In the 60 years since Israel achieved Statehood in 1948, JNF’s achievements have included planting more than 240 million trees, reclaiming more than 300,000 acres of land for agriculture, housing and industry, creating over 1,100 rural villages, building more than 4,000 miles of roads through mountainous and desert terrain and establishing some 450 regional parks throughout the country.

Largely as a result of the afforestation programme, Israel was the only country in the world to have more trees at the end of the 20th century than it did at the beginning. The trees enrich and conserve the soil against wind and water erosion, something which is of paramount importance in a semi-arid country such as Israel. Israel is also acknowledged as a world leader in water conservation and recycling. Two thirds of Israel’s land is desert and rain falls only for about 50 days a year, between November and March. JNF has partnered with Israel’s universities and agricultural organizations to create Research and Development facilities in the Galilee and the Negev. It has also constructed over 200 water reservoirs and dams all over the country with a total of more than 125 million cubic metres – about eight percent of Israel’s annual water consumption. JNF has always been ready to share its knowledge with others, both within Israel and beyond, especially in matters relating to the conservation of resources. Israeli representatives attended the 2007 Bali Conference on Climate change. The country is a founding and active member of the International Arid Lands Consortium, whose other members include Egypt, Jordan and a number of American universities. Most recently, Israel has become a member of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development
(OECD)’s Development Centre, a first step towards full membership of the parent organization. It appears likely that this development is due in no small part to JNF’s past and present work in numerous Third World countries and to it’s skill in developing a predator to control the gall wasps which have wreaked havoc in eucalyptus groves in Israel, the Mediterranean Basin, Africa and the Far East. For the past two years, members of JNF-Australia have worked on World Clean-Up Day in Israel, especially in the Negev region. In addition, the support of JNF-America enabled JNFKKL in Israel to make eco-pioneering a part of World CleanUp Day 2007, through the use of garbage bags manufactured from biodegradable plastic which are people and environmentally friendly. Closer to home, several JNF projects have applications for Canada. Southern Alberta has arid conditions which are similar to those in Israel and the Alberta government has had to restrict water usage for farmers in these areas. The province is currently investing up to $1 million in JNF research in Israel in order to gain expertise in dry land agriculture which can then be implemented at home - the treatment and use of recycled water, effective use of reservoirs and methods of crop growing which require less use of irrigated water.

Page 31
JNF: Meeting Israel’s Needs Today and Tomorrow The government of Manitoba, too, is investing $1 million in a three-year research programme with JNF. Israeli expertise is at work with the First Nations in Manitoba, especially the Misipawistik Cree community. A delegation led by Chief Ovide Mercredi visited Israel in 2007, returning home with knowledge about cultivating hot-house crops which will enable them to earn an independent living. They also learned about raising fish in the desert, developing agriculture in arid areas, organic farming and cooperation on water usage. All these measures, which are fully backed by the Manitoba government, will help to bring to an end the cycle of unemployment which has plagued them for many years, as well as improving their nutrition and dietary conditions. Manitoba Minister Christine Melnick, Canada’s only Minister of Water Stewardship, has turned to JNF-KKL for its expertise in water management. In partnership with KKL, she will be hosting an international water symposium in August 2008 in Winnipeg, to address issues of shared concern to Manitoba and Israel. As well, she has set up a $250,000 scholarship fund allowing post-graduate students from Manitoba to pursue their water-related studies in Israel. After seeing the work being carried out at Lake Hula during a private visit to Israel last year, the Minister commented that “KKL-JNF has a vitally important role to play in
looking after the environment, especially because of the practical use it makes of its research and investments”. While so much of JNF-KKL’s energy at home and abroad is devoted to these and other conservation issues, it’s humanitarian initiatives never cease. In the summer of 2006, for instance, the Nes Harim Field Centre played host to families from northern Israel, who came to take a break from the katyusha rocket attacks on their region. Similarly, in the summer of 2007, two busloads of families from Sderot were able to escape temporarily from the qassam missile onslaught and spend four days at the Centre. The Senior’s Citizen’s Park Promenade project, which will benefit from the funds raised at Hamilton’s 2008 Negev Dinner will, like all other such JNFfunded areas, provide relaxation and enjoyment for all Israelis – Jews, Arabs, Bedouin, Christian and Druze - and visitors alike. It is yet another example of the way in which Jews and non-Jews around the world continue to partner with the people of Israel in their common quest for harmony, beauty, the highest quality of life and ultimately, ‘shalom’ – peace. Thank you for helping JNF-KKL continue to turn vision into reality.

K
iryat Eliezer is located in the southern part of Haifa. It is home to many seniors from the former Soviet Union, a number of whom are holocaust survivors. They are pensioners living on meager incomes. Most live in small flats without air-conditioning and the gardens around their apartment buildings are poorly maintained and have no facilities. The park is their ‘meeting place’. It provides them with an opportunity to meet and chat, play chess and escape their small, confined quarters. There is an existing promenade in poor condition and it has no ‘equipment’ for elderly people. Despite its condition, the promenade is quite popular among the local seniors because it offers shade on the hot summer days and an opportunity to be outdoors. With the funds raised from this Negev Dinner, JNF will upgrade the promenade and properly landscape and equip the park with age-appropriate facilities including park benches, picnic tables, etc. Honouring our mothers and fathers, whether they are in Hamilton or in Haifa is most appropriate. Providing the seniors of Kiryat Eliezer with a modern, beautifully landscaped and well-equipped park promenade will enable them to enjoy a better quality of life in their twilight years.

THE PROJECTS
A Possibilities LEADER
W
hat’s in our wheelbarrows? Possibilities! The flower-filled wheelbarrows found at Shalom Village help us bring the garden to people when people can’t come to the garden. These “portable gardens” symbolize the possibilities that your donations realize – hiring and retaining innovative, forward-thinking staff, purchasing equipment and supplies, inspiring and building the team of staff and volunteers to make it happen year after year. Possibilities are the seasoning in the soup of life. They are all the things, large and small, that make every day worth living. They are the moments that bring a smile to your face, a laugh to your heart or a tear to your eye. It is the catch in your throat when something beautiful penetrates your shell and touches your soul. It is the exhilaration you feel when you are dancing and the music seems to speak directly to you. It is the pride you feel when you have created something special and it is the connection you make with others when you share your stories. It is the way you felt on that first date and it is the way you feel when you tell your friends about the achievements of your children. It is all that and more. Your support of Shalom Village will allow us to continue to bring possibilities to our Fathers and our Mothers, now and into the future.

The Jewish National Fund of Hamilton would like to express its gratitude to those friends who provided services and worked to make this evening such a success … • Lorne Gaffe and Hamilton Store Fixtures - year in, year out Lorne and his staff help us inventory and ship our dishes for our Negev Dinners in Hamilton and Windsor and other special occasions • Violet Byl at Effort Trust – for arranging the facilities for our 2 telethons and making sure that our volunteers were able to enter the premises • Israel Vukmir – a very special person who VOLUNTEERS day after day and month after month without reservation or stipulations – totally committed to JNF and the State of Israel • Mark Draak and Wide Eyed Communications – for once again demonstrating their creativity in developing our Tribute Book • Irene Gaudet, Chef Alan and Executive Sous Chef Fritz Zwahlen– and the Hamilton Convention Centre for delivering delicious food and providing excellent service • Jennifer Howe – at Perfect Sphere Productions for producing wonderfully creative videos and taking much of the pressure off when dealing with staging such a significant event • Telav Communications – for the AV support • David Katz & Michael Mastroianni – for making sure we have our dishes where we need them and when we need them • Rabbi Mordechai Silberberg – some Rabbis practice their Judaism from the pulpit. Rabbi Silberberg lives his Judaism in everything he does … compassionate and understanding and a distinct pleasure • Karen & Warren Waxman – for having provided our beautiful tablecloths for this evening’s dinner • Jason Elmaleh and Commerce Press – for printing the tribute book in a timely and cost effective manner • Lawrence Yanover – for managing the photography during the reception and dinner professionally and efficiently • Anna McCusker – when it comes to décor and a touch of class, we turn to Anna and are never disappointed … and our dedicated volunteers whose names appear elsewhere in this book. It is comforting to know that so many care about our community and Israel. This whole event would not be possible without the support of the dedicated and committed staff from Shalom Village, too numerous to mention individually. You truly DO CARE!
We need to also acknowledge two very special women in our JNF office: Sonia Jacob, our Administrative Coordinator, whose attention-to-detail is remarkable, who manages to keep her cool and handles all challenges, and Roberta Katz, our Office Assistant who is always pleasant, cooperative and accommodating. Kol Hakavod and Todah Rabah!!
