There is one CLA board of director position available for a term of 2016 to 2018. Joe Cooper of Great Village, Nova Scotia has allowed his name to stand for the board. Joe and his family operate Balamore Farms, the largest Limousin operation in Atlantic Canada. He is a progressive and active member of the Maritime Limousin Association, strong supporter of 4-H and youth involvement in the Limousin breed, and has a thorough understanding of all aspects of the cattle industry.

The election of the Directors shall be staggered such that three (3) Directors are elected from among the Active Members of the Association each year for a term of three (3) years.

JUNIOR COMMITTEE REPORT – Eric Boon Complete report was included in the AGM booklet on page 29 for members to review. • Thanked Wayne Lawrence and his committee for organizing this junior show • Last year the CJLA National Conference was in Saskatoon, SK • Awarded 5 juniors with $250 scholarships last year • New CJLA Executive Curtis Bielecki (President), Cheyenne Porter (Vice-President), Nicole Bielecki (Secretary/Reporter), Carolyn Darling (Treasurer) • Plan to have a face-to-face meeting on the Sunday following CLA Board Meeting in Calgary in early December • Will limit scholarships to two (2) $500 scholarships and (2) $250 scholarships going forward. Venture Livestock donated $500 towards CJLA scholarships. • Junior Conference will be in Alberta next year • Lynn & Tyra Combest will be donating a heifer (through their November herd dispersal) to the CJLA • Australia/Canadian Youth Exchange – Tessa Verbeek gave brief overview of the program Moved by Eric Boon to adopt the Junior Committee report as presented. Seconded by Mark Porter CARRIED NATIONAL SHOW & SALE COMMITTEE – Terry Hepper Complete report was included in the AGM booklet on pages 30 for members to review. • National Show was held at Canadian Western Agribition, Regina, SK • Participants from five provinces brought cattle, resulting in over 140 head, which was the largest breed show they have had in years • Judged by long-time Limousin breeder Gary Anderson • Show was broadcast over the internet • Last year was the first year the National Show awarded extra points • Sale was held by Bohrson Marketing and was one of the highest averaging sales among the breeds • This year National Show & Sale is being held at the Royal Winter Fair, Toronto, ON MOVED by Terry Hepper, to adopt the National Show & Sale Committee report as presented. GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT – Tessa Verbeek Complete General Manager’s report was included in the AGM booklet on page 38 for members to review. CLA Website (page 39) • New website was launched in the spring with many of the same features as the previous website but a refreshed and current appearance • Reminder to submit events to be listed on the website, submit calves for sale for free and submit breeding cattle or frozen genetics ads for a $50 one-time fee • Encourage membership input into additions or changes they would like to see made to the website
International Visitors/ILC 2016 (page 37) • Many international visitors came to tour Limousin herds, highlighted the Australian visitors that have come recently • ILC 2016 will be held in Ireland in August 2016, registration is now open Canadian Beef Breeds Council (page 36) • Canadian Beef Breeds Council (CBBC) provided a report for the AGM booklet and CLA continues to work with CBBC and the other breed associations • CLA will continue to receive funding for market development endeavours from CBBC Social Media/Sponsorship (page 35) • Overview of CLA’s social media and the benefit it holds for CLA members • CLA continuing to sponsor the Livestock Markets Association of Canada Auctioneer Championship and TBar Invitational Golf Tournament. This year CLA will also be sponsoring the Livestock Gentec Field Day (August) and Annual Conference (October) as a speaker at the conference has done work with the British Limousin Cattle Society Advertising (page 34) • CLA continues to publish an ad in the Canadian Cattlemen Magazine on a co-op basis with operations wishing to be involved • Provincial associations are welcome to utilize our ads to suit their own needs Limousin Voice (page 33) • The CLA has decided to eliminate the summer issue of the Limousin Voice magazine, bringing it to three issues per year with slightly changed deadlines and rates. NEW BUSINESS • Bryce Allen presented a topic for discussion in regards to the Canadian Limousin Association and Ontario Limousin Association (and other provinces) amalgamating their fee structures. Four main problems were presented: 1) Finances are at an all-time low and membership fees for the OLA are going to need to be increased 2) Centralization of the OLA Executive needs to happen 3) Many individuals are members of the CLA and not a member of their provincial association or vise-versa 4) Need to enhance the Limousin breed at the local level via the Provincial Association. Is there a way to amalgamate our free structures to enhance both the Provincial and National Associations via a compulsory membership levy on each registered animal or an increase in the CLA membership to include a Provincial levy? This would achieve an only one time membership payment from the members. • Second point for discussion – can the CLA apply for NOT FOR PROFIT status so that the Provincial Associations could be included? OLA juniors cannot legally sell tickets. • Discussed that rules vary depending on the province in regards to selling tickets • Mark Porter & other Alberta members suggested cutting down costs and the number of meetings/meeting time, increasing enjoyable events, encouraging youth involvement • Mike Geddes – need to keep CLA budget in mind • Dan Darling – suggested that in order to be a CLA member you need to be first a member of the provincial association • No further discussion PRESENTATIONS Anne-Brunet Burgess – Brian Lee thanked Anne for her years of work for the Canadian Limousin Association. A presentation of a purse was made to Anne at the Alberta Limousin Association field day. Tessa Verbeek – Terry Hepper presented Tessa Verbeek with a print as a welcome to the Canadian Limousin Association and to congratulate her on her recent marriage to Colin Verbeek. Brian & Holli Lee – Terry Hepper presented Brian and Holli Lee with a thank you gift for their years of dedication to the board and the breed. 2016 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The 2016 AGM will take place in Alberta with the Canadian Junior Limousin Conference. I would like to thank everyone for taking the time to come out and attend the Annual General Meeting and the Canadian Junior Limousin events. This year it is being held in conjunction with the Alberta Limousin Association Field Day, allowing Limousin breeders to be treated to extra events. A big thank you to all the volunteers and organizers that have made the time in Lloydminster very enjoyable. Over the past year the cattle industry has gone from record prices to a somewhat reduced price for all classes of feeder cattle. During this time prices for Limousin influenced cattle have remained strong. The first year has been a busy time for Tessa Verbeek, our General Manager. She has proven herself a very capable and strong supporter of our breed. During the past year, Tessa was invited to attend NALF’s AGM in Denver, where she met with the people involved with Limousin in the USA. This co-operation has quickly proven the breed is gaining more recognition and new ground.

Tessa has also been involved with the moving of our DNA lab to Delta this year and as many breeders know, it wasn’t a perfect transition, but she has the majority of problems solved. During the past winter The Canadian Beef Breeds Council, provided funding for Genomic testing of animals. This has cut the cost in half for any Genomic tests and it would be a good opportunity to take advantage of, before the funding is removed. Another project Tessa completed, was the finish of our national tag program, as it was launched into Quebec last spring. We now have pink tags in every region in Canada, this is great news and our breed is being consulted by others seeking advice. Our office staff continue to work at great lengths to keep all the breeder’s paperwork and requests up to date. DigitalBeef might not seem a perfect system to lots of people, but it has many advantages a person can use to improve record keeping. Laura Ecklund was hired to assist in the office and has also agreed to be the CJLA Co-ordinator. I thank all the office staff for their support and keeping the day to day business running smooth.

During the past few days many people were able to see first hand the strength of our breed. A strong junior show and meeting, the farm tours and the interaction of all people during supper and the presentation afterward. None of this could have been done without the strong and dedicated boards of the CLA, the ALA and the CJLA. This is what makes these events a must to attend and a big thanks to all who took the time to experience this year’s event.

Canadian Junior Limousin Asscoiation Report
The Canadian Junior Limousin Association (CJLA) has had a tremendously exciting year! New initiatives, awards and travel opportunities have all lead to renewed interest and excitement amongst the CJLA membership. There are currently 111 CJLA members across Canada. The goals of the CJLA include attaining new members, encouraging and exciting current members in hopes of retaining them as long term Limousin breeders and supporters, and preparing our CJLA members to be successful cattlemen and women. The CJLA Board of Directors had an excellent meeting in Calgary, AB at the CLA office on December 12, 2015. The juniors went out for supper and bowling the evening before and then got down to business with a very productive meeting that included talks of ordering Limousin apparel to sell, proposed updates to the CJLA Impact Show Rules, and decisions by the juniors as to how they would like to see the scholarships and travel awards carried out. The CJLA awards two $500 scholarships and two $250 scholarships to CJLA members annually. It was decided at the August 2015 meeting that recipients may only receive a CJLA monetary scholarship once. The 2015 CJLA scholarship recipients were: Connor Rodger, Carolyn Darling, Ashley McConnell and Haleigh Weppler.

The CLA and CJLA announced the new Australian/ Canadian Limousin Youth Exchange this year! In an effort to both attract new junior members to the Limousin breed and support and encourage our current junior membership the CLA has worked out an agreement with an Australian school and Limousin breeders to assist young Limousin enthusiasts in travelling to each other’s country to gain new experiences, knowledge and connections. Each year, Australia will send young Limousin enthusiasts to Canada for the month of November to stay with host families and take in the major shows occurring during that month. In turn, Canada will send two CJLA members age 16-21 to Australia for their choice of either February/March (during the Sydney Royal Show, Sydney, New South Wales) or August (during the Ekka Royal Queensland Show, Brisbane, Queensland). A host family or multiple host families will be arranged for the juniors to stay with during their time in Australia. The successful applicants will be awarded $1,000 CAD each from the CJLA to assist with travel expenses.

A number of excellent applications were submitted and the lucky recipients of the 2016 Australian/Canadian Limousin Youth Exchange are Brandon Hertz and Braeden Weppler! The pair will be heading to Australia for the month of August and a fantastic itinerary has been planned for them by their Australian hosts. The 2017 award trip application deadline is October 31, 2016 and the successful applicants will be chosen and notified by November 15, 2016.

The CJLA is very excited to also be sending one junior delegate on an all expenses paid trip to the Canadian Beef Industry Conference August 9-11, 2016 in Calgary, Alberta! Highlights include keynote speaker, Arlene Dickinson from Dragon’s Den, Young Cattlemen’s Council AGM, many fantastic speakers and networking with people involved in all aspects of the cattle industry! To apply CJLA members were asked to answer the questions “Where do you see the Limousin breed in 10 years?” and “How will you be involved in the breed at that time?” in 800-1000 words. Carolyn Darling of Castleton, ON was selected as the winning applicant!
Canadian Junior Limousin Asscoiation Report Continued
One of the highlights of the year for the CJLA was the Combest CJLA donation heifer! Combest Limousin donated a heifer to the CJLA that was sold in their herd dispersal sale November 16th, 2015. Funds from the sale of this heifer went towards the CJLA scholarships and Australian/Canadian Limousin Youth Exchange. The CJLA donation heifer (Lot 59) brought $8,000 and was purchased by B Bar Cattle, Eden Meadows Farm, Hollee Limousin, Venture Livestock, Richmond Ranch, Anchor B Limousin, Hillview Farms, Pinnacle View Limousin, Jones Cattle Co., Jaymarandy Livestock, Payne Livestock, J. Yorga Farms, Andrew Ranches, Greenwood Limousin, Carpenter Cattle Co., and Bee Zee Acres. These operations will share in the care of this heifer and all proceeds from the sale of progeny from the “CJLA Donation Heifer” will go into the CJLA account. Thank you very much to all of those operations and to Lynn and Tyra Combest for donating this female to the CJLA! Thank you also to CJLA adult adviser Eric Boon who had the vision to put this all together! The CJLA would also like to thank Venture Livestock who made a generous contribution of $500 to the CJLA scholarship funds in 2015. Finally, the T Bar Invitational Golf Tournament remains a dedicated supporter of the CJLA, raising thousands of dollars each year for the CJLA. Thank you for your continued support of our juniors! In June of 2016 it was decided that the CJLA would be better to be overseen by CLA staff. Eric Boon stepped down as Adult Advisor of the CJLA and Laura Ecklund took over as the new CJLA Coordinator. Her duties will include overseeing the CJLA board of directors and their meetings, administering the scholarships and travel awards, and providing some assistance and guidance to the organizers of the CJLA Impact Show.

2016 has been a year of measured growth for the Canadian Limousin Association Commercial Cattle Committee. In its first year of operation there have been over 13,500 Limousin branded CCIA tags purchased. This is a result of Limousin cattlemen seeing the benefit of branding their product. As individual animal tracking becomes more common place throughout the feeding industry, the value of Prior to the CLA Cattlemen’s Evening in Stratford, ON the CLA board members toured Limousin animals on feed at the Limousin genetics with our Chaffe Farms. exceptional feed bunk conversion to lean meat yield is becoming more highly sought after. Feed yards that once had a sprinkling of Limousin feeders have expanded their orders to bring in more Limousin cattle to increase their margins. The investment that our tag program supporters have put forth is being rewarded at the marketplace by having more bidders on their cattle. 2015 saw the committee have it’s inaugural Cattlemen’s Evening in Stratford, Ontario in August. The supper and speaker event was held in conjunction with the CJLA Impact Show and CLA Annual General Meeting. The group of 65 Limousin enthusiasts that attended heard a presentation from Robert Bielak, Preseident of St. Helens Packers in Toronto. The chief officer of Canada’s largest privately owned packer told the group that the Limousin cattle that his company harvests are among the highest returning carcasses in his facility and are a good fit for his business. The group also had the opportunity to have a discussion with Dan Darling, then Vice President of the Canadian Cattlemen Association. Due to technical difficulties his media presentation was not available, but Dan was able to update the group on trade and industry issues. Now that Dan has moved to the President’s chair of CCA we are very fortunate to have a fellow breeder and Limousin supporter at the center of Canadian cattle policy and lobby efforts. We extend an open invitation for his input into any of our future Cattlemen’s Evening events. Looking forward the committee is looking at opportunities to expand the success story of our breeds unique place in the industry. As carcass weights have risen and overall cutability declines there has never been a better time where high converting, exceptional yielding cattle are more in demand by the industry. The 2015 National Limousin Show was held at The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, ON on November 7, 2015.There was an excellent turnout of cattle that were showcased both on display in the barn and on show day. There were 27 different Limousin breeders.The show was judged by Jill and Ryley Mader from Carstairs, Alberta.They were given the difficult task of sorting through 127 head of purebred Limousin cattle and ultimately slapping a champion female and champion bull. The Grand Champion Female was Ivy’s Bianca HTZ17b exhibited by Revolution Cattle Co. and the Reserve Grand Champion Female was Pinch Hill Big Booty 403B exhibited by Pinch Hill Limousin. The Grand Champion Bull was RCL Wind Chill 8B exhibited by William Pilgrim and the Reserve Grand Champion Bull was Koyle Black Hawk 23B exhibited by Koyle Farms. All participants were given gifts from the Ontario Limousin Association and Norwich Packers. I would like to thank them and all of the volunteers that made this event such a success.
National Show & Sale Committee Report
The spectators were treated to a wonderful display of Limousin cattle and we thank them too for the constant support they show us of our breed. Friendship and celebration was held at a pizza party in the barn after the show. I wish continued success to the the National Show Committee organizers for the 2016 show in Brandon, Manitoba.

The CLA Award of Distinction is the most deserved award that the Limousin breed has to present, and this year it is given to a breeder who has represented the breed for many years and has been a great ambassador for our breed. Combest Limousin was started as a family operated farm and has continued with the Limousin cattle for 45 years. As we draw to the end of the Combest program we would like to thank Lynn and Tyra for all the support and involvement that has happened over this time. Combest Limousin is listed on the CLA membership as #2413 this is an indication of his early and continued commitment to the breed. Lynn showed and raised many champion and high sellers during his 45-year career. Not many here today remember showing against the Imminence cow and how she has an impact on the Combest herd. Lynn has been a very strong supporter of the Limo breed. He has been on the CLA board and served on the ALA board as well. It seems his auctioneering skills are required in many fundraising events every year in many provinces. The generosity continues with the heifer the Combest’s are donating to the CJLA.

Breed Improvement
Breed improvement can take on many forms and this year the Canadian Limousin Association’s main project for breed improvement has been the move to Delta Genomics as the official laboratory of the CLA which now allows CLA members to do low-density (GGP-LD, 26,000 SNP) and high-density (GPP-HD, 50,000 SNP) genotyping on their animals which are necessary to develop Molecular Breeding Values (MBVs) and contribute to genomically enhanced Expected Progeny Differences (gEPDs). For a limited time, genotyping can be done at a 50% discount thanks to Agriculture & Agri-Marketing Canada funding secured by the Canadian Beef Breeds Council. gEPDs are very similar to traditional EPDs and are used in the same manner. The primary difference is that gEPDs are much more accurate early in an animal’s life than traditional EPDs. This gives breeders the opportunity to make better breeding and selection decisions when an animal is young as opposed to when it already has many offspring, which may also be breeding at this time. In order to generate gEPDs, two things are needed: 1. The traditional EPDs. Proper measurements of the traditional EPDs leads to increased accuracy, which contributes significantly to the accuracy of the prediction equations used to generate gEPDs for a breed. 2. Low or High Density SNP genotypes. The SNP genotypes are transformed into Molecular Breeding Values (MBVs). MBVs are then blended with the traditional EPDs to create gEPDs. In the Canadian Limousin Association’s DigitalBeef system, gEPDs are highlighted yellow. SNP testing in cattle can be broadly classified into three categories based on the number of SNPs that are assayed: basic parentage, low density, and high density SNP genotyping. 1. Basic SNP Parentage (95-120 SNPs) • The Basic SNP Parentage assay is a very good tool for parentage verification and has approximately the same accuracy as a microsatellite parentage test. • This assay does not collect enough information to be used for the generation of MBVs or gEPDs. 2. Low Density SNP Genotyping (GGP-LD; 26,000 SNPs) • The GGP-LD assay is an excellent tool for conducting SNP parentage verification and is highly accurate. • The main advantage of the GGP-LD assay is that this information can be applied to the prediction equations for a specific breed to generate gEPDs at the lowest cost to the breeder.

3. High Density SNP Genotyping (GGP-HD also called the Bovine 50K; 50,000 SNPs) • The Bovine 50K assay is also an excellent tool for conducting SNP parentage verification and is highly accurate. • Bovine 50K genotyping is used on highly prolific animals (i.e., AI sires, ET dams, and prolific herd sires) that contribute a great deal of genetic material to the entire herd through their many offspring. The Bovine 50K genotypes are used to develop the prediction equations for a specific breed’s gEPD calculation. Furthermore, by including animals from their herd, the prediction equations become that much more accurate for the breeder since their animals are contributing to the development of the calculations. • The Bovine 50K genotypes can also be applied to existing prediction equations to generate gEPDs on these animals.
The Canadian Limousin Association focused our 2015 advertising and promotion endeavours on the following to maximize exposure for the breed and add value for our membership: - Canadian Cattlemen Magazine: A card ad is in every issue and a double page spread is in five issues with space for CLA members to list their operation for $400 (limited spots available). - Canadian Cattlemen Bull Buyer’s Guide (distributed to over 103,000 people): a one page advertisement is in both the mid-January and late February issues with space for CLA members to list their operation for $100 per issue (limited spots available). - “The Exhibitor” Magazine at Farmfair International
Advertising & Promotion
- Auction Market Tag Posters: Posters informing cattle buyers of the meaning of the pink Limousin tags and advertising the value of buying Limousin calves were sent to provincial associations to be posted in auction markets across Canada. - Provincial Limousin Association Advertising: The CLA supports many provincial Limousin associations through advertising in their material such as the ALA calendar, Manitoba Beef Producers Cattle Country Newspaper (co-op ad with MLA), OLA dayplanner, etc. Contact the CLA for more information on how we will support your provincial advertising and promotion efforts. - CLA Website, Facebook & Twitter: Information on website such as upcoming events, blog posts, etc. updated regularly. Daily posts on Facebook and/or Twitter to promote/showcase Limousin, advertise upcoming member and industry events, share information relevant to Limousin breeders and cattle industry, promote and encourage junior participation, etc. - In person attendance at events: CLA General Manager Tessa Verbeek was directed by the CLA board of directors to attend individual bull sales that are within driving distance once every other year. A rotation of bull sales were attended this spring, and a different rotation will be attended next year. Tessa Verbeek also attended numerous shows such as Olds Fall Classic, the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, Farmfair International, and Canadian Western Agribition to promote the Limousin breed. Attendance at industry conferences and events is also an important aspect of keeping our breed in the forefront. Limousin promotional material was at the CBBC booth at events such as the Alberta Beef Industry Conference and Calgary Stampede Cattle Trail. The CLA has also provided numerous industry events and shows with CLA promotional items to include in registration packages, hand out as prizes, etc. - Sponsorship: In 2015 the CLA sponsored the T Bar Invitational Golf Tournament, Livestock Markets Association of Canada (LMAC) Convention/Auctioneer Competition, Livestock Gentec Field Day and Livestock Gentec Annual Conference. Corporate international memberships were taken out at Farmfair International and Canadian Western Agribition, allowing Canadian Limousin to be promoted to international visitors at these shows. The CLA is striving to maximize positive exposure of the Limousin breed by utilizing a variety of marketing avenues and endeavouring to do so in the most cost effective way. We must ensure our presence is there alongside other major Canadian beef breeds in the appropriate publications and at key events while finding ways to set ourselves apart.

The Limousin Voice Magazine has been through some very positive changes in 2015. It was decided by the CLA board of directors in early 2015 to eliminate the summer issue of the Limousin Voice magazine due to lack of advertising and events to promote during the summer months making the issue unnecessary. The need to get our magazine in the hands of more commercial bull buyers was also identified and it was decided that the three remaining issues (Fall, Christmas and Bull issues) would be distributed to the CLA’s commercial bull buyer list bringing the circulation of each issue to 2,200 people!
Limousin Voice Magazine
The changes have been met with very positive response from CLA members with a significant increase in advertising in all issues. CLA General Manager Tessa Verbeek coordinates and writes the majority of the content and articles in the Limousin Voice, in addition to having articles written by Piper Whelan and other contributors. We strive to include a variety of content in the magazine to suite a wide audience. We hope everyone can find valuable and interesting information in the Limousin Voice, therefore every issue features the CLA Office Update, provincial association news, veterinary, nutrition, genetics, and current industry outlook articles, the CLA President’s report, CJLA news, social news, an article about an up and coming Limousin breeder, an article about a commercial operation that has chosen to use Limousin in their herd, and often additional articles on topics of interest, show and sale results, etc. Your suggestions for content and individuals or operations to interview for articles are always welcome! The CLA board of directors and staff continue to work with the good folks at Today’s Publishing to increase advertising, broaden and improve the content and articles, and do our best to make the Limousin Voice a publication that both Limousin breeders and commercial cattlemen eagerly await to receive in the mail and read from cover to cover!
International Travel & Visitors
Lauren Amor & Kate Loudon stayed with Canadian Limousin host families during November 2015 as part of the Australian/Canadian Limousin Youth Exchange.
In addition to our domestic activities and promotion, the Canadian Limousin Association is also involved in international promotion through travel to international events and welcoming international guests to tour Canadian Limousin operations. Annual attendance by the CLA General Manager at the National Western Stock Show/NALF Board Meeting and AGM, Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) Annual Convention and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) Annual Convention allows the Canadian Limousin Association to maintain key industry contacts in the USA including relations with our registry service provider, DigitalBeef, our genetic consultant, Dr. Bob Weaber, our counterparts at the North American Limousin Association (NALF), and the International Genetic Solutions (IGS) partners with which we collaborate to do our multi breed genetic evaluation. A number of meetings with these individuals and groups take place during these events. The speakers at these conventions are also highly informative and a great deal of information is brought back and shared with CLA members through the monthly newsletter and AGM presentation. Agri-marketing funding provided by CBBC funds a large portion of international travel by the CLA. There has been a number of international visitors inquiring with the Canadian Limousin Association. We have assisted many individuals and groups in finding operations to tours, encouraging application to the Farmfair International or Canadian Western Agribition Inbound Buyer Programs, and in the case of the Australian/Canadian Limousin Youth Exchange, the CLA has coordinated host families and planned an itinerary for these young international guests. We always welcome and look forward to international interest in Canadian genetics.

2015 has certainly been a year of growth and change at the Canadian Limousin Association. I am tremendously pleased to inform you that Limousin cattle registration increased by 606 head in 2015 which is actually the largest annual increase in the past 15 years with the year 2008 seeing a similar increase in total head registered that year. While Whole Herd Enrolment numbers have been declining for a number of years 2015 also saw a stabilization in WHE numbers. Since 2012 WHE numbers have typically declined from 169 to 402 head per year, however in 2015 there was only a 16 head decline, which is an early indication of expanding Limousin herds and increased retention of females despite some recent herd dispersals. This is all fantastic news for our breed which we are all working, in our own way, to promote, support and improve! In addition to increased registrations we have also seen an influx in submission of performance data on animals which is excellent! Diligent reporting of performance data on the entire Canadian Limousin population is essential for continual improvement of our breed. The combination of backlogged registry work from DigitalBeef issues, and increased registrations and submission of performance data, as well as Dallas Wise’s annual two month leave for calving at her own place lead the CLA to seek out a third person to work part time in the CLA office. Laura Ecklund was hired in February to join the CLA team and we could not be more pleased with this addition to the CLA staff. Having two part time and one full time staff has been commonplace off and on in the past at the CLA. The CLA board of directors feels that having competent, pleasant, and committed staff that have the best interests of the breed at heart are key to our Association’s success. A three person staff has also allowed at least one staff member to always be readily available to members when they need assistance. It is understandable that members may have concerns with the CLA budget in relation to employing two part time and one full time staff, however this has been accomplished within the same budget that was in place in previous years for two staff members. In regards to the budget, the CLA did run an operational deficit in 2015 however this was somewhat attributed to some large and costly undertakings that took place including the new CLA website, the Limousin branded RFID program which was extended across Canada, including Quebec in 2015, and overlap of staff that were employed by the CLA in 2015. As some of the CLA’s service providers are based in the USA the poor exchange rate has also affected the CLA’s budget negatively. The 2016 budget is set for a profit and thus far we are on track or ahead in most areas of the budget. When setting a budget for each individual area of CLA income and spending it is always a fine line between keeping the budget in check and continuing to provide our members with improved advertising and promotion, excellent office support, continual genetic improvement, supporting our breed and industry through sponsorship, and ensuring that the Limousin breed is visible at relevant industry events. We are continuing to find ways to most effectively utilize our funds, streamline our operations, and analyze what spending truly benefits the breed and our members, what is necessary to remain relevant in the industry, and what spending can be cut back or eliminated. It is also essential that we keep in mind that the CLA is a non-profit organization meaning our main goal is not to make a profit, our main goal is to provide registry services and promotional assistance to our members. It is necessary that we have income in order to be able to do all of the things we do, so we cannot continually run deficit budgets, however so long as we have sufficient funds to operate the Association appropriately and we are utilizing those funds in such a manner that supports and benefits the Association and it’s membership, we are remaining committed to our mission of the CLA, “To be the #1 terminal breed of choice and a provider of superior genetics that allows our members to be profitable leaders in the beef industry.”

A membership survey was circulated to all CLA members via e-mail, social media and the CLA website in the spring of 2016. 91 responses were made to the survey and the survey results have been shared with the CLA board of directors and staff. The survey results will be reviewed in detail at the CLA board of directors meeting on July 30, 2016 and individual concerns or comments that were made will be published anonymously in future CLA newsletters and responded to. We feel this is the best way of recognizing our member’s comments and sharing our responses with all CLA members as others may share the same comments or concerns. We thank those of you who took the time to participate in sharing your opinions and suggestions and ultimately assisting the CLA board of directors in shaping the future of the CLA. Please know that the CLA membership survey is not the only way to have your voice heard by the CLA. If ever you should have a comment or concern we would encourage you to share your thoughts with a CLA director or CLA General Manager, Tessa Verbeek. Often times your concerns may just be a misunderstanding that needs clarification, or perhaps we need to make a change at the CLA. You have the opportunity to vote on the CLA board of directors who represent your interests as Limousin breeders, or you may run for the CLA board of directors yourself if you so choose. Please remember that the CLA board of directors is in place to give direction to the CLA and they are always open to having those discussions with you and working together to find solutions. DigitalBeef has been a main focus in 2015. Many of you are likely aware that things got off to a rocky start with a poor combination of a new program that had not been fully “de-bugged” before being opened up to the membership, a lack of extensive staff training on the system, and unfortunately also a lack of member training on how to fully utilize the new registry system. This all lead to system errors, delays in turnaround time for work sent into the office, and utlimately a bad start to things. Although the CLA board and staff understand that a major change such as this is often hard to get used to there were legitimate reasons why DigitalBeef was chosen to replace the previous registry system. DigitalBeef has many tremendously powerful features which we understand can also make it more confusing to use but in the long run will be better for the Limousin breed and allow the CLA to be progressive. DigitalBeef can better deal with information pertaining to DNA and genetics, allows members to see more and generate extensive reports, the customer service provided by DigitalBeef is excellent, and this all comes at a cost savings to the CLA in comparison to our previous system. As a year has now passed since we first got started with DigitalBeef I can confidently say that we are in a much better place with DigitalBeef and although we continue to tweak and find small issues with the system, by and large things have improved tenfold. Dallas, Laura and myself have worked tirelessly to tackle the backlog of work and we were able to get back to a much more reasonable turnaround time for our members. Written instructions on how to use DigitalBeef have always been available online, however I have also taken it upon myself to put together instructional videos for members. Please know that your calls are always welcome at the CLA office if you ever need DigitalBeef assistance. Thank you to everyone who has had an open mind about endeavouring to learn this new system, we are always here to assist you!

The move to Delta Genomics was also a big decision for the CLA this year and one that came about very suddenly when CBBC was able to secure funding on short notice on behalf of all Canadian beef breeds to do a one time bulk transfer of samples from GenServe to Delta Genomics at no cost to the associations. There were numerous reasons for the switch. Prior to the move to Delta Genomics the CLA was not doing large scale genotyping on our population, now we are, and while funding lasts genotyping can be done at a 50% discount. All testing can now be done at one laboratory (parentage, genotyping, horned/polled, coat colour, Protoporhyria) which means you only need to send one sample to one lab. The electronic exchange system between CLA and Delta Genomics pulls all horned/polled and coat colour results into the CLA system so there is no need for members to pay $5 per result to have CLA staff manually enter results. Delta Genomics can get molecular breeding values (MBVs) on animals which are necessary to calculate genomically enhanced EPDs (gEPDs). Delta Genomics can also do Protoporphyria testing on-demand instead of four times per year and at less than half the price. Having all major breeds at one lab simplifies any across breed testing that must be conducted for parentage verification (sample transfer between labs previously was $10) and finally, all DNA testing costs are the same or less at Delta Genomics.

I would like to sincerely thank Dallas Wise for her hard work and assistance through the past year. She is always a friendly voice our members can count on for assistance and I am truly grateful for her dedication to our Association and membership. I would also like to say a big thank you to Laura Ecklund who was hired in February to assist with the increasing workload in the office and has proven to be highly capable and motivated to see the Canadian Limousin Association and our membership succeed and grow for the future. She has also keenly taken on the role of CJLA Coordinator which will take up a small portion of her time, particularly prior to and during the CJLA Impact Show. Her passion for the breed and past experience as a junior Limousin member herself are truly important in ensuring our junior association sees growth and enhanced excitement! The Executive and directors of the CLA board of directors have been tremendous to work with and I look forward to continuing to collaborate with these fine Limousin breeders to raise the profile of the Limousin breed in Canada. Whether a CLA member, director, or staff members we all have the best interests of the Limousin breed in mind and when we all work together to accomplish the same goal we can affect positive results. I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenges and triumphs of my first year as the General Manager of the Canadian Limousin Association. Canadian Beef Breeds Council Report
Our mandate is to ensure representation for the Canadian purebred beef cattle sector both domestically and internationally. The Canadian Beef Breeds Council will continue to engage and work with industry groups, government agencies and other valued partners in an effort to increase the profitability of the industry. It was great to see strong bull sales again this spring, however purebred breeders may want to closely watch the feeder/fed cattle market which is significantly lower than a year ago. If prices for feeder/fed cattle remain at the current price level, there will most likely be a correction in the bull market in 2017. There was some indication of this at some sales this spring, where it was reported that a higher number of bulls being passed than in previous years. As a supplier of bulls, it will be more important than ever to offer an exceptional product and a level of service that sets your operation apart from your fellow breeders. - A focus on the connecting the industry... A continuation of our efforts surrounding the National Beef Strategic Plan has been the development of the Canadian Beef Industry Conference, which will be held in Calgary from August 9-12, 2016. This conference will consolidate a number events and sessions that were previously held independently of each other as industry groups have identified value in working together. The CBBC is proud to be a partner in the event and encourage purebred breeders to attend. It will be a great opportunity to network with commercial cattle producers, feedlot owners, packers, retailers and more. - A focus on growing our markets... International markets are essential to long term profitability in the purebred sector and as such the CBBC will continue to develop new opportunities and maintain current markets. Earlier in 2016, we had the distinct pleasure of hosting the Honorable Lawrence MacAulay, the Canadian Minister of Agriculture, and formally announced $2.588 million through the AgriMarketing program for the promotion of Canadian beef cattle genetics around the world. This funding will be utilized over 3 years in a combined effort from breed associations, livestock export companies and livestock exhibitions. This operational plan will focus our efforts in key markets where there is the greatest opportunity to market our world leading genetics. - A focus on continual genetic improvement… One of the components of the National Beef Strategic Plan is continual genetic improvement of the national beef herd. The industry has looked to the purebred sector to deliver results as any true genetic change will start with its seedstock. The CBBC received funding from Agriculture Agri-Food Canada under the CAAP program for $1.0 million dollars that will be used to encourage producers to adopt genomic technology. Breed Associations have developed specialized programs that suit the needs of their breeders with most offering a reduced cost for genomic testing (eg: Zoetis 50K).

- A focus on the local markets… The importance of the domestic cattle market is often overlooked. The majority of purebred genetics are sold within Canada to purebred and commercial cow/ calf producers. The purebred industry needs to not only ensure that our pedigree and performance data is accurate, but that we incorporate world leading scientific information into our evaluation systems. This is a significant part of our image or ‘brand’ and is why the majority of bulls used in commercial operations are registered purebreds. The CBBC will work to ensure that we have a strong domestic market through collaborative efforts with government agencies, breed associations and other stakeholders in the beef cattle industry. - A focus on collaboration… A consistent theme through our activities is collaboration. We believe that the purebred industry and its breeders are best represented through strategic alliances. We have recently entered into an agreement with AgriClear that will provide an additional option for purebred breeders to buy or sell cattle. This platform is digitally based and offers the same level of transactional security and efficiency offered to commercial buyers and sellers. Regards,

Wow! Another year come and gone, I can’t believe I am already reporting on the past year. Limousin is in a perfect position in this ever evolving market and we certainly have some of the most sought after terminal traits in the industry. BC is very proud to offer some of those elite genetics and had a great year representing them to our province.
British Columbia Limousin Breeders Annual Report
In early April, the Peace Country Limousin Breeders held their 26th Annual Bull Sale in Dawson Creek, BC. It is the only all Limousin bull sale in British Columbia and bulls averaged very well! They would like to thank their volume buyers Stan Skeels and Double T Cattle for purchasing 3 bulls each! Limousin was once again well represented at some of BC’s premier agriculture exhibitions. North Peace Fall Fair, Dawson Creek Exhibition, Nechako Valley Exhibition, Bulkley Valley Exhibition, and Interior Provincial Exhibitions all saw Limousin entries in 2015. Some of our provincial 4-H shows also had Limousin animals receiving champion banners.

BC Limousin breeders consigned one female to the 5th Annual Pacific Invitational All Breeds Female sale. The sale was held in Williams Lake, BC on September 26, 2015. She was consigned by Pinnacle View Limousin, and purchased by Darling Farms. Pinnacle View Limousin will once again hold their Open House and BC Limousin Field Day on September 10, 2016. There will be several cattle displays, lunch, tours, and guest speakers. Everyone is welcome to attend! That’s all I have to report from this side of the Rockies. What’s new with the ALA? How about those Hoodies & T-shirts! We decided to give some clothing a try this year as promotional items and what a successful promotion. Hoodies & T-shirts were ordered with our ALA logo and sold at the fall shows. If you still don’t have yours order one today. They make great gifts. Our ALA booth saw some much needed new life and thank you The ALA booth was the place to be at the Medicine Hat Pen Show this year! to Carla de Jager for taking the reins and overseeing the booth and promoting our Limousin breed. She made popcorn at Farmfair International and no one went by the booth without an invitation to stop and enjoy the popcorn. It was well presented and received - thanks to all who helped her out. ALA farm signs are available for members to order, a very inexpensive way to advertise the Limousin breed and your farm. New 4-H awards were ordered and this year 4-Hers received a standout blue show comb. As we continue to support our youth through the 4-H program we also look forward to your photos for our website. Website updates are still in the works, watch for the new image coming shortly, including the exciting new map app. Thank you to all who took the time to attend the fall and spring shows and sales. It is great to see so many exhibitors and large numbers of cattle. The Prime Limousin Club once again sponsored pizza in the barn following the Farmfair International show and it was a great relaxing event for exhibitors and visitors. With the National Junior Show and CLA meetings being held in Alberta this year the ALA AGM, field day, and calendar auction were all moved to co-inside with these events. Our current board of directors are as follows: Jackie Payne - President, Carla de Jager - Treasurer, Barb Miller - Secretary, Mark Porter - Past President, Directors - Steve Lingley, Colin Verbeek, Tiffany Richmond and Jim Symens. The ALA board will be searching for some new directors and we would like to thank outgoing board members Jackie Payne, Mark Porter and Barb Miller for the time spent volunteering over the past 6 years. A very well attended 2015 ALA Field Day was held in southeast Alberta on June 20, 2015. One of the stops on the tour was Bow Valley Genetics near Brooks, AB.

Enthusiasm is at an all time high… Participation is at an all time high… There is excitement in the Limousin industry in Saskatchewan! The SLA Annual Meeting took place in July during the Prince Albert Exhibition Summer Fair. During the Fair there is a Beef Show where Limousin made a strong appearance in all jackpot shows and were highly competitive in the all breeds show.

Canadian Western Agribition is the major event the SLA plans for every year. • SLA Commerical Producer of the Year Award was presented to the Hansen family who operate Springhill Land and Cattle Company, a 3rd generation ranch at Rockglen, SK. The Manitoba Limousin Association continues to be busy since the last CLA AGM twelve months ago. Last fall heavy Limousin calves sold extremely well with many steers achieving $2,000.00 return for producers. Record returns brought much needed enthusiasm to the beef industry. The Manitoba Livestock Expo was held in Brandon in early November. Despite not having enough numbers for a point show a very competitive show was held with exhibitors from and Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Congratulations to Eden Meadows Farm on their Grand Champion Bull and Female. The Manitoba Advantage Sale was held at Triple R Limousin, MacGregor, MB on December 4, 2015. Thirty four lots sold for an average of $3,466.00. High seller was Lot 4, Cam Poll Billboard, selling to Triple R Limousin for $6,300.00. Our Manitoba Limousin Association AGM was held in January in conjunction with other beef breeds from Manitoba in Brandon. Maplehurst Farms of Westbourne, MB was awarded ‘Manitoba Ambassador of the Year’. The new board is: President, Bill Campbell; Treasurer, Sherry Daniel and Directors, Jay-Dean Smyth, Mark Angus, Kyle Wright, Travis Hunter, Darby Cochrane, Leonard Gertz, Art Rodgers, Bob Davey, Scott Stewart and Tim Davey. MJLA President is Kaitlyn Davey. The Manitoba Junior Limousin Association was active in the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair Junior Show. Congratulations to these junior exhibitors that continue to bring Limousin heifers and steers to this prestigious fair. The Manitoba Beef Performance Annual Bull Sale was held April 2, 2016. The eleven Limousin bulls averaged $4,636.00 which was $650.00 higher than the next highest breed. The high selling Limousin and high selling bull of the entire test sold for $8,200.00. Congratulations to Amaglen Limousin of Darlingford, MB for their high seller. Congratulations to all of the Limousin consignors on a great sale. Our provincial Limousin show was held in Lundar, MB on June 10, 2016 with a good turnout of cattle with 5 exhibitors participating. Congratulations to Jaymarandy Limousin on their Grand Champion Bull - JL Bonnet’s Thug 402B and NYK Cattle Company on their Grand Champion Female Cam Poll Xpressive - WGC 12X. Many 4-H clubs have held/will hold their achievements and inter-club achievements throughout the summer and the Limousin influence will be notice at many of these events. Best of luck to all 4-H members that chose Limousin steers and heifers to exhibit. I would like to personally invite you to Brandon, MB on October 28-29, 2016 for the National Limousin Show & Sale. The Keystone Centre is one of the finest livestock facilities in North America with accommodations on site. No need to drive or find parking! The Ontario Limousin Association has had many successful events over the past year. The OLA has promoted the Limousin breed in Ontario at many fairs, and at our Provincial Show at the Markham Fair in October, and the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto in November. Our Junior Association was kept very busy hosting the National Junior Limousin Impact Show last August in Stratford, Ontario, with a good show and activities represented by many juniors from across the country. Our juniors also ensure that every 4-H member that is showing a Limousin influenced animal receives a breed award which helps promote our breed in 4-H. The Promotions and Fundraising Committee continued with our advertisement in the Ontario Beef magazine using some promotional material supplied by the CLA and also some local pictures. The committee also continued with the day planner and with much help from the whole Board had a very successful day planner. This is the main source of revenue for the board to pay for running this association and as well as other promotional projects. We get many positive comments about this professional publication and plan on continuing it in the future. The last two years we had the Ontario Limousin display at the Beef Farmers of Ontario Annual meeting and the Board decided to go again as there seem to be some interest from many of the delegates attending the 2 day meeting in February. We have had one year of the new website up and running. We feel it is an important tool to have for our membership, as well as people looking for information about the Limousin breed here in Ontario.

Definitely the highlight of 2015 for the Maritime Limousin Association was the Junior Limousin Show hosted at Balamore Farm on September 12th & 13th. Twenty-nine juniors showed animals from 5 different herds under judge Martin Bohrson, from Hanley, Saskatchewan.

The Grand Champion Male ribbon went to Othberg’s Chad, a Richmond Yak son shown by Gabrielle Cleveland, while Balamore Cracker Jack, a ROMN Yippi Ki Yeh son shown by Sydney Patton won the Reserve. The Grand Champion Female award went to a CFIX Wild Card daughter owned and exhibited by William Copper of East Coast Limousin, RPY Paynes Blossom and Reserve Female spot went to a Richmond Wyatt daughter owned by Balamore Farm and shown that day by Alex Smith. The overall aggregate prize, a belt buckle, went to William Cooper of East Coast Limousin, with a score of 92.1, while Megan Wynn won the reserve aggregate score with an 82.4. Along with the awards handed out to the juniors, a special presentation was made to Manfred Zillig and Lois Brown, owners of Lindencrest Farms - for close to 40 years they have been providing a variety of livestock to 4-Hers. We were pleased to acknowledge their commitment to 4-Hers whom would not have had the opportunity to participate in livestock projects without their support.

We also held our annual meeting at the show, and were pleased to have our new General Manager for the CLA, Tessa Verbeek present. She encouraged us to promote the new Limousin ear tags, and spoke to the new system for registering and entering performance data. Tessa also encouraged us to consider putting a name forth as a director to represent the Quebec/Atlantic Region. We had three Limousin shows during the fall of 2015 in Atlantic Canada. The Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition, the Hants County Exhibition Scotiabank Heritage Beef Show and the Beef Expo in Sussex New Brunswick. We hope to have full strings at these shows again this year. In the spring of 2016 we had two great bull sales. The 4th Annual Balamore Farm “Thickness Sells” Bull Sale in Truro posted an impressive average on their Limousin bulls of $7,038. The high selling lot was Balamore Big Papi 406B sired by TMF Westwood 505W and sold for $10,250 to River Mac Farms, owned by Blair MacDonald. The second sale was the Maritime Beef Testing Society Annual Breeding Stock Sale. The Limousin bulls averaged $3,792 while a small group of females went for an average of $2,413. The high selling Limousin bull in this group was Othbergs Clark sired by Richmond Yak that sold for $4,750 to Carol Milberry. The high selling open Limousin female was Othberg’s Miracle also sired by Richmond Yak that sold for $2,700 to Trevor and Vanessa Hudson. Upcoming this fall we are pleased that Balamore Farms has once again volunteered to host the Junior show. Entry forms are in the mail and the dates are September 10th and 11th, 2016. The judge for the weekend will be Eric Boon of B Bar Cattle.
