9.0 ENERGY
The mining industry’s usage of energy demonstrates its significant forward and backward linkages in the local economy.
9.1 Electric Power
In 2019, the mining industry in Ghana consumed 1,647,796,288 KWh of electric power and paid a total amount equivalent to about USD 316.350 million to VRA, GRIDCO and ECG, while in 2018, 1,334,482,124 KWh was used by the industry. The latter translates into a nominal value of USD 246.999 million. The expenditure on electric power translates into 6.9 per cent of the producing member companies’ mineral receipts in 2019 as compared to 6.4 per cent in 2018.
9.2 Diesel
In 2019, the mining industry consumed 335,970,347 litres of diesel compared to the 334,997,438 litres it used in 2018. Correspondingly, the companies paid an amount of USD 342.052 million in 2019 and USD 320.599 million in 2018 for diesel consumption. This favourably translates into 7.5 per cent share of the producing member companies’ mineral receipts in 2019 as compared to 8.3 per cent in 2018.
